Attracting a heap of first time visitors to town, the four course degustation dinners with Fervor food delighted guests. Hasn’t town just been a wonderful buzz of activity these last few weeks?! If you’ve been lucky enough to spend some time downtown you will have seen caravans and campers galore, both staying overnight in the Caravan Park and lined up down the main drag at smoko. People walking the main street, admiring the gardens and snapping photos of El Toro standing proud outside the Town Hall. The hunt for coffee and food always seems to be on, so we hope our hospitality business have taken advantage and made a killing!

We contributed to the visitor servicing efforts by helping out at the Old Railway Station on weekend mornings over the last few weeks. It’s always nice to have the chance to chat to visitors to our town and it’s been a great opportunity to understand what travellers are keen to get out and see!

The October calendar is looking mildly chockers—it’s definitely a good month to rip that last page off the back of your Banksia Bulletin and whack it on the fridge! We’ve got three very exciting, first time events this month: Wild Woman Workshop with Kristy Barr (yes, the hailing from Quairading Kristy Barr!) from Sacred Strength on Thursday 8th October—check that out on page 15.  Farm Safety Arvo at the Community Building on Thursday 15th October. Tickets essential, and you can buy them online! Visit farm-safetyarvo.eventbrite.com.au—we really hope all farming enterprises will take advantage of this opportunity to brush up on your skills and knowledge. Safety first!  AND, Evening on the Green on Saturday 17th October down at the oval. We have a wildly simple aim with this event: to bring the community together and just chill right on out. Pack an esky and a camp chair, and come enjoy some live music!

Loose Stitches Spring has sprung, the blowies are here and the everlastings, orchids and other wildflowers have put on a fantastic show this year.

We have a busy month or so ahead as we are ‘On the Road again’. Loosies is going to the Boddington Arts Council ‘Fields of the Quilts’ on Sunday 27th September and then we are off to WAQA (WA Quilters Association) QuiltWest Weekend on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th October. It is pretty exciting to be able to be out and about again although there are strict social distancing rules. We are very privileged and proud to be ‘on the road’ to these events as it is invitation only.

Greetings to all residents and readers of the Quairading “Banksia Bulletin” for this October Edition of Quairading Cop’s Corner.

Firstly may I say from both myself and Sgt Lindsay Collett, Officer in Charge, that we are very pleased and grateful for the continued support and assistance whilst the State and Federal Governments continue to try to control this COVID-19 Pandemic.

There have only been a few issues arising that have required our attention over the past few months and we hope we have been able to serve the community to the best of our abilities.

The combined efforts made by the Youth Council’s of Quairading and Cunderdin were able to pull off a fantastic day of Laser Tag at the O’Connor Park in Cunderdin last month. It was an excellent day and proudly supported by officers from the Quairading, Cunderdin and Kellerberrin Police in attendance, along with members of the St John Ambulance (Cunderdin). Thank you to all that attended and assisted.

Quairading Police have had to deal with more damage complaints, from our Shire where there has been damage caused to the barriers fencing near the playground at the Community Building / Town Oval. This area is for the use of the children, but we suspect that it is those same children who attend and damage the area. May we please ask that if your children are the ones responsible, speak with them and remind them that they are only causing trouble for themselves if caught by Police and charged.

Sadly we have to report on a stealing matter, where a person or persons have attended the Quairading Cemetery over the weekend and removed several items from a new gravesite. The family are devastated, as you can imagine, and are only wishing to have the 3 items, described as a small windmill, a snowball angel and a fairy, returned. There will be no questions asked if those items appear back in place.

RAINMAKERS X FERVOR SUCCESS Our passion for Quairading rarely wavers, but it was beautifully set on fire last weekend as we hosted 140 dinner guests over two magnificent nights with Fervor.

Thank you so much to everyone who made the weekend so special. Yoda & the Fervor family for yet another delivery of incredible textures and tastes, Ivanjohn for the perfect live soundtrack each night, the Stacey family for allowing us access to their property—and every single person who travelled from near and far to attend each evening. The crowd was a wonderful mix of ages and cultures and we’re so happy we were able to bring them to Quairading and show them a good time!

A huge thank you to our volunteer crew for hours of organisation over the last couple of months and all the extra hands that helped out during the week and over the weekend with set up, pack down, bus driving, waitstaffing, bar tending, firewood collecting and so much more. It is no mean feat to pull off an event of this style and Quairading is truly lucky to have so many willing helpers.

Thank you also to Shire of Quairading for in kind hire of the Town Hall kitchen, tables and community bus, Quairading CRC for in kind hire of chairs, Quairading Ag Show for in kind hire of fire drums and fridge eskies and other local businesses and organisations for making other gear available for hire.

The next Rainmakers event will be very Christmassy, family-friendly and held this December—keep an eye out!

St John WA - Benefit Fund Update After many years, the now very familiar St John Benefit Fund renewal notices have received an update. The new St John Benefit Fund membership card will now be a red card, similar in size to a credit card, that should easily fit into your purse or wallet. When paid, the membership will be valid until the date listed on the card.

Even though these new cards and membership renewals are now processed in Perth and sent from Perth, everything else remains the same as always.

Your Benefit Fund subscription remains in Quairading for the benefit of the Quairading community. Memberships may continue to be paid by bank transfer, mail or in person at the post office.

The Anglican Church held a street stall Saturday September 5, 2020. It was extremely well supported and we’d like to thank all of the people who made donations, bought raffle tickets, donated their time to sell raffle tickets during the week, those who donated goods, and baked. Thank you to everyone who worked on the day.

There was an amazing amount of goodies delivered and on offer for sale. Thank you to Bev Thomson for the beautiful quilt she made and donated as one of the raffle prizes.

Thank you to the Coop staff who had the street stall table ready and waiting for us, assisted us during the week and stored our treasures at the end of each day.

Don’t trust atoms...

They make up everything!

Surprise and delight were shared by young and old at the Quairading CRC’s second Astronomy Night held last week on Thursday 17th September 2020. There were so many that braved the cold to be part of the event and we thank you for doing so (just wish the mosquitos stayed home!). Richard Tonello of AstroEd kicked off the event with a witty astronomy/dad joke fuelled presentation. There was a lot of maths talk thrown around numbers on a scale that are almost beyond comprehension - but despite this, he somehow seemed to keep the 70 odd guests engaged for a good 30 minutes!

With a plethora of interesting and worthy stories, local Noongar Elder Winnie McHenry shared with us the story of the Seven Sisters and her connections to it – being one of seven sisters herself! Huge thank you to Winnie for sharing, we’re thrilled to have been able to provide the opportunity for this group of 70+ locals and visiting Caravanners to hear these special stories.

Once the sun had well and truly set, the cold had well and truly set in and the stars shone bright thanks to no over powering moon in the sky – it was time to hit the telescopes! We saw clusters of stars shrouded in mysterious green looking fog, the incredible upside Yonga (kangaroo) which took up half the sky and THE RINGS OF SATURN! We’re already really excited to facilitate even more astronomy, night sky, story sharing and astro-photography workshops in the future, and of course Astro Rick is mad keen to come back to wonderful Quairading again!

QDHS Faction Athletics Carnival Friday 4th September dawned a beautiful day for our Faction Athletics Carnival. We had a strong turnout by our students and the day was enjoyed by all. A big thank you to all who helped out with the day including the Shire of Quairading who helped out with the oval preparation, Nigel and his band of helpers who marked and set up the oval, the P&C organised the lunch and morning tea, Darryl and Wendy at Quairading Smash Repairs who again, sponsored the ever popular Dash For Cash, Timing Gates WA who donated their time and equipment and our wonderful parents and family members who held a stopwatch or recorded for events.

STEM—Ocean Theme Day On Thursday 10th September our whole school participated in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) day, where the children were placed in mixed groups across the school and participated in some innovative activities where they had to use their 21st Century skills to solve ocean themed problems.

In the K-2 rooms we had an oil spill and polluted waters where the children were challenged to clean up the water using a variety of different methods. They soon found out that some spills are irreversible.

They also experimented with the density of water using an egg and salty water, they now know why we float so well in the ocean!

In the upper grades we had a plethora of activities from building aquariums in Minecraft, making preventable shark shields, looking at sand erosion on beaches and ‘to float or not to float’ - neutral buoyancy.

At the end of the day each group presented a showcase item to parents showing what we’d learnt. It was just amazing, the children not only expanded their wealth of knowledge and vocabulary but also used creativity and many different problem solving skills.

Eugene Stone M- 0429 645 121 P- 9645 121 National Servicemen’s memorial Plaque Dedication & Unveiling Address by Mia Davies MLA Distinguished guests, especially the Servicemen we are here to honour today, thank you for the invitation to join you this morning to commemorate those who served in the navy, army and air force as part of the two National Service Schemes (1951-59 and 1964-72).

It is a privilege to address you and assist in the unveiling of the plaque to act as a permanent reminder for the community and visitors that Quairading families made a contribution to the call to build our national defence. The Australia of 1951 was a different time, a time when many of our community leaders, our local government; state, federal, MP’s, business men even a local doctor, had some experience of serving in the theatre of war.

The National collective feared the threat and growth of communism and there was widespread concern that Australia was vulnerable when it came to its defence capabilities.

Compulsory service was considered the solution. Those we honour today made a contribution when Australia had need of youth, commitment and willingness to give National Service. This service undoubtedly changed the course of your life - it is the very least we can do to pause as a community and give thanks.

To remember those who in the course of active duty, paid the ultimate sacrifice.

To pay our respects to those 20 year old boys who answered the call-whether they served in the theatre of war or not.

They forged a determination to serve their country and stand on the shoulders of all those citizens who put on the uniform- and that includes the contribution by our National Servicemen.

It is my honour to officially unveil this commemorative plaque dedicated to Australia’s National Servicemen who served between 1951- 1972, and to recognise the men and their families from the Quairading district who answered the call when Australia needed them.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm Well at this time of the year I feel like I should put a sign out the front that says “Free Weeds You Pick”! Trouble is I don’t think I’d have any takers everyone has enough of their own. Even though we have not had very much rain gardens are looking wonderful at the moment. And although the crops are turning there is still time to fill those heads and the tanks if early October brings some rain.

Plant of the Month – Ulmus parvifolia, is commonly known as the Chinese Elm, it is a very hardy and drought tolerant tree that is well suited to our conditions. It is a small to medium deciduous tree growing to 10–18 m tall with a slender trunk and crown. The leathery, lustrous green single-toothed leaves are small, 2–5 cm long by 1–3 cm broad and often retained as late as April. The flowers are small and inconspicuous. The trunk has a handsome, flaking bark of mottled grays with tans and reds, giving rise to its other common name, the lacebark elm. The Chinese elm can be grown from root cuttings and from seed. In wetter climates the tree can be weedy, however, there is no such problem here. At Eaglewood Farm we have several growing from root cuttings taken from our original seed grown trees. Because these were grown from seed we have a lime green leafed one and a dark green leafed one. I really love these trees because they are so reliable and with no water at all look beautifully green and lush during summer.

It’s time to…

Sow – If you haven’t already put your summer vegetable seeds in it’s not too late! By sowing seeds rather than buying seedlings you have an almost infinite variety of each plant type to choose from, as well as being able to sow heirloom vegetables which can be more interesting than the usual seeds commercially available. The two seed companies I buy from are Eden Seed Co and Diggers but there are West Australian seed companies too. Some crops of course can only be grown by seed these are beans and root crops such as carrots, beetroot, parsnips, swedes, turnips and radishes.

In the vegetable garden there are still broccoli heads forming, fennel bulbs, cabbages, lettuce, English spinach, celery, kale, rhubarb and of course many many herbs.

Things to do – this is a good time to check and renew garden paths where necessary; move orchid pots into dappled shade, check to see if they need repotting and fertilize with an orchid specific mix; thin crops of peaches and nectarines which tend to overbear so that the remaining fruit has a better chance of reaching a good size; add lots of compost to the vegetable beds; give your lawn a bit of love – if water is running off when you water, fork the lawn down to a depth of twenty centimeters, then fertilize with an organic pelletized chicken mix or a lawn specific compost which is very fine then apply a wetting agent like Eco wet and water in well, Plant – by mid October all summer vegetable this will set your lawn up for summer; spring seedlings can be planted – tomatoes, capsicums, flowering roses like Banksia roses should be eggplants, cucumbers, zucchinis, melons and pruned after they have finished flowering, pumpkins and all beans except for broad beans repeat flowering roses should be at their peak which you should be harvesting by then and during October so apart from dead heading and Snake beans which go in towards the end of watering deeply all that is left to do is enjoy October. The 5th Busy thingy we did was after being at the Vintage Club, it was back to the CRC to be educated on how to take the best Portrait pics. We learnt about all these little tricks of not just how to adjust your camera for Portrait pics & also learnt how to position the sitter you are photographing correctly. One simple trick we learnt was how to shine a light on a persons face like you see in those model shoots.

If the person’s face is photographed with broad light shining on them they appear fatter. If the sitter is

Dangin Cricket Club Written by Vincent Hadlow

(g = games played; r = runs; c = catches; w = wickets; @ = averages)

The Quairading Cricket Ass. began in 1952.

The DCC played in an unprecedented 11 Grand Finals in a row from 1955 until 1965.

They won six of them including a hat-trick of flags in 1960-61-62. Indeed, a remarkable achievement. Then the QCA moved all games to Quairading where the four teams (while the new turf sports oval with 6 turf pitches was being constructed) played at the Convent and High School grounds on malthoid wickets.

The emotional move from the famous old Dangin ground must have been too much as the side struggled for several years, not reaching the GF again until the 1973-74 season. But then, from years 1979-83, the lads won 5 glorious flags “on the trot”.

Another lad who made his mark at Dangin was the ex-WAFL/VFL /SANFL footballer Max George. Max was a tearaway schoolboy fast bowler who played from 1966-68. He played 20 games for 136 r @ 9, HS 29 and took 5 c.

His genuine pace bowling netted him 38 wickets at the excellent average of 7 and his best effort was 6/6. His father Don also played and tallied 15 games for 130 runs.

Vincent Hadlow played his first game as a nippy little 10-year-old in 1965 and played until 1987. The stalwart played 265 games, netting 1750 r @ 9. (Every innings a century nipped in the bud!). His HS was 56 and he took 92 catches. He also took 250 w, BB 6/50. His brother, future premiership (1979) In the interim many players joined up while captain Greg, played from 1967-79. He played the “red and white caps” attempted to 142 g, made 1278 r @ 11, took 36 c and took establish themselves as a force once more.

54 w, BB 4/9. Two other Hadlows, Stuart and Brian Smith began playing as a schoolboy in Haydn, made their debuts in 1970 and 1973 1964 and played until 1969. He played 67 respectively. Local publican, Frank Maddaford, joined the team in 1971 and played until 1973. Always impeccably attired he played 33 times for a PAGE 48

modest 40 runs and took 4 c and 7 wickets.

Frank was run out while batting one day and it was never actually clarified whether he was run out going for the third run (which his partner was doing) or that he was in fact still attempting his first. He was a great character to have on the team! Peter Cross (72-74, 25g, 104 r @5, 11 c and 7 w, BB 4/23) was another terrific team man who gave plenty of “oomph” to the DCC, especially in the field.

The Anderson boys, Les and George, also turned up in 1971. Both played until 1987.

Choppers played 90 g for 328 r, took 19 c (many of them at short leg), 25 w and his BB was 2/7. Geo was a fine swing bowler and played 228 games, made 1137 r @ 7, took 74 c (he would’ve taken one more if it hadn’t bounced off the top of his head and gone over the boundary line for six!), took 231 w @ 20 and his BB was an outstanding 8/5!! Another redheaded opening bowler started out in 1973. Bimbo White played 135 games for Dangin until 1981. He made 1699 r @ 14 as a stubborn top order batsman, took 28 catches and swung his way to 200 wickets @ 12. BB 8/50.

Derek and Cliff Collard (jnr) started at Dangin as schoolboys in 1979. Derek played 24 g, made 295 r @ 17, HS 50, took 8 c, 21 w with a BB of 4/13 and Cliff played 20 games for 203 r @ 12, HS 65, took 8 c, 15 w and a BB of 4/22.

Derek went on to play State Schoolboys cricket (and footy) for WA and both lads had outstanding WAFL careers. And they were premiership players for Dangin!!

Bob, Craig and Glenn Hall started giving Dangin some outstanding service from 1981 until 1983. Father Bob played 31 games for 59 runs and took 9 c. I’ve never met anyone so determined to do his utmost for the team.

And it rubbed off on his sons Craig 26 g, 177 r @17, 11 c (one of them an absolute “ripsnorter” in one of our premierships), and 8 w. and Glenn (40 g, 153 r, 14 c and 14w).

Two of Dangin’s finest ever players started playing at this time. Roger Strickland (197986. 39 g, 631 r @ 24.2, HS 72, 15 c and 41 w @ 19. BB 6/25) and Tony Beatty (1980-83. 43 g, 1611 r @ 64.4, 11 c, 90w @ 11. BB 6/18) produced some outstanding individual efforts during their tenures at our club. Two instances in particular spring to mind. Tony’s 248 runs (in 2 innings) in the 1982 premiership finals’ series (HS 138) was a magnificent contribution and Roger’s flag winning 6/40 v.

Quairading in the 1983 Grand Final has gone down in Dangin “folklore”. Dangin could only muster 135 in their “dig”. With the powerful Quairading side at 1 for 63, and seemingly “cruising”, all seemed lost. Skipper Chook threw the ball to Roger and -- as they say in the classics -- the rest is history!

Darren Atkinson (79-87. 36g, 375 r@17, HS 65, 19c, 48 w@20, BB 5/43) was a fine young premiership player for the club as was Lyn “Lou” Hoskins (78-81. 52g, 231 r, 24c). Gary Green (85-87. 36g. 286 r, HS 31, 7c, 50w, BB 528), publican Gary Payne (84-86. 25g. 170 r, 3c, 22w, BB 3/30) and Tim Woods (81-87. 34 g, 253 r, 5 c plus 18c/1 st as WK) all put in top efforts for the club. When deciding on some places to photograph, I went out to Frasers’ farm to check out old vintage rustic items on their scrap heap that may be interesting. I had been thinking maybe we could have a best photo competition of a picture taken during this weekend. When strolling through Frasers’ scrap heap, I sighted an old wool scales frame and thought it would make an interesting frame to mount a winning photograph, and double as a trophy.

On the Friday night of the photography weekend we all met at the Quairading Community Building and I unveiled this surprise trophy to all the persons attending. I told them the best photo taken on the weekend would be mounted on this trophy and their name would be put on the trophy and the trophy would stay in Quairading and be put on display somewhere.

A professional photographer who was invited to help organise this weekend told me the shape of the trophy was “portrait” and suggested I tell the people to take some portrait photos (not just landscape). I then suggested, “how about we make the competition the best portrait of a person award, taken during the weekend?”. And that was the inception of THE RUSSELL STACEY TROPHY FOR BEST PORTRAIT. Some handy hints: Take your photograph in portrait orientation. Focus on the eyes. Consider if people will look at your photo longer than another. Evoke emotion to make people discuss your photo. The background is just as important as the person in the photo. Search on the internet for ideas of portrait photography and ideas.

LADIES GOLF 2020 Well the COVID season has come to an end and let’s hope we can have a full season next year. We have finished the year with a flurry of 3 open days, Charity Day and our club championships.

The ladies have had a fun season with good numbers most weeks around 12- 15 enjoying our beautiful course. As things have panned out this year I don’t think we can single out any one member of our club to thank, everyone has gone over and above to maintain the course, clubhouse and running of the competitions - this is what makes us the envy of many clubs around. So thank you committee and club members one and all, you have excelled in making a trying year such a success.

Championships looked a little different for the ladies this year but I think we still saw our two best golfers going head to head for the trophy and a big congratulations goes to Sharon Richards for lifting the championship cup aloft again, you truly deserve this honour. Sharon has played some scintillating golf this season and we are so lucky to call her our Champion. Shauna Stone came in runner up for 2020 and also deserves this title, she is really finding her groove on the golf course so watch this space. Well done ladies.

The start of September saw some lady members head to the big smoke for Country Week. Firstly Lisa and Kelli honourably represented our club in the Jubilee Foursomes, always a tough day but we are so glad you could fit this into your busy schedules. On the Wednesday Robyn and Barb did Quairading proud by being the sand green runners up in the Canadian Foursomes, you are amazing girls always tough for us to play on these beautiful courses with generally very slick greens and you both mastered it. Thursday and Friday were individual days where Kelli, Anne and Shauna carried the flag for us, well done ladies always a fun few days in the city.

Last Wednesday saw us host the annual Charity Day which was a huge success with 56 ladies in the playing field and another 32 visitors enjoying lunch and games at the clubhouse. We had 1/3 of the field travelling from Perth and another 1/3 travelling from surrounding clubs, there was a fantastic vibe around the club on what is a very special day raising money for the Hospital Auxiliary and RFDS. A big thanks to everyone for helping us raise over $3000 for a couple of fantastic causes.

When writing this report we are preparing for our last official Wednesday golf day of 2020 when we will be playing for Sharon Richards and Chris Gimbel’s trophies in the club pairs which is sure to be a fun day. After play we will host some of our treasured past members and complete the season with annual presentations and afternoon tea.

MENS GOLF 2020 Written by Rohan Hadlow

The golf season got off to a late start with the covid shut down effecting the early part of our season. At times during those months we even wondered whether there would be a golf season at all.

Then when restrictions began lifting a few meetings were had with the hierarchy and with a quick overhaul of the fixtures we got up and running around mid June.

We were able to fit most competition days in which was great and playoff rounds as well, so no golf was really lost at all.

We even managed to hold our open day the Dolin cup. This was just as a stand alone event with no 4bbb which we thought was best under the circumstances. With 49 (which was great) in the field the cup was won by local lad Brendon Simpson—well done old timer. Special thanks to Trevor Bond who helped with the draw and ran the computer on the day and also to sponsor Quairading Earthmoving, and to Nutrient Ag for jumping on board as well.

We also had all our mid week days with the Agri day and AIM day which were both well supported.

Our biggest day of the year as usual was the Scotty J day. This is a special day for the club and its patrons and big thanks to Plumber, Anne and the family for all the work they do for and on that day.

We had a championship playoffs in mid September with Stu Wilson taking on Keith Johnson again in the major and Scott Richards and Greg Logan in the nett. I had the pleasure of caddying for Stu for the day and what an awesome display of match play it was between the two. They both had their good and bad holes and could of gone either way. At the end of 35 holes it was jackie who much to his delight prevailed to clutch his first club championship. Plumber who was going for title number 22 I might add was gracious in defeat and I am sure we will see this two fight again in years to come. In the nett, Scott was too good for lugs winning 6/5 On the mens Saturday we have had over 30 men attend at different stages of the year so Thank you to all who played this year I am sure there were a few good scores out there! Also to all the businesses and people who sponsored our events throughout the season we couldn't have one without you.

I just have a few people I would like to thank for their help throughout the year. Firstly Shauna and the committee for all the work they do to make our club tick. Crackers for all the help on the men's side of things much appreciated. Di and Janine for their help throughout the year and on our big days, Sharon for helping with the weekly write ups. To jackie our outgoing captain for leading me in the right direction in the running of the days and Trev Bond with his help on computer side of things. Big thanks to plumber and his ground crew with all the work they do around our course to make it look the way it does it really is amazing what they do and I wouldn't want to know hours they spend up there each year.

And lastly a special little mention to Mel for going along with me being captain she has been a awesome support throughout the season as well.

Uniting Church Coraling Street As we follow the Gospel readings for this year we turn from the coming of the Holy Spirit to what is expected by the followers of Jesus. In the story of walking on water we don’t really expect people to walk on water so “what does it mean”? I think it means that to follow Jesus we must keep our eyes fixed on Him, if not then we sink, we can be assured that when we do He will hold us up.

The story of the Canaanite women pleading for Jesus to heal her daughter shows that all people are welcome to follow Him when they have faith. As she was outside the box, the next story was a discussion on who Jesus was and while some people focused on the Prophets, it was Peters confession as the Messiah that won praise and gave him some kind of authority. Then Jesus discusses with the disciples different situations pointing out that some of His followers would not do all the right things but when they believed in Him they are forgiven and that could happen at any stage of life so ‘How do we fit in these ways of following Jesus?
