I think I had a combined total of eight hours sleep for the month of September—anyone else in that boat? Odds on October being any more restful? Probably pretty slim, but I actually do not care because while things in thriving little Quairading have been pretty not stop—they’ve been pretty dang fun. The last month has seen sports premierships, sports wind ups, long nights of play rehearsals, events galore, planning galore—everything but sleeping galore. Our Alzheimer’s Awareness Day at the Quairading CRC was super successful with almost 30 locals (and even some visitors) packing into our Meeting Room to watch the documentary Alive Inside. We were also treated to a surprise presentation by Noleen Philippe (from the Pub!) a former community educator with Alzheimer’s WA. Thank you for sharing your expertise Noleen! Selling Curtain Raisers Mamma Mia tickets has kept as surprisingly busy at the CRC with two of the four performances pretty close to selling out! If you’re dragging your feet and haven’t been in to buy your tickets yet, pick them up and get to it! I hope you’re taking advantage of this fine weather and using it to get out into the bush for a look at the spectacular display of wildflowers on show. If you’re not lucky enough to own your own patch of bush, the Quairading Nature Reserve is a seriously underrated treat— only 5km from town. Stick to the clearly marked tracks and you’ll be sure to stay out of trouble and see all the goods on offer. If you can’t find me come November, chances are I’m in a comatosed state of sleep somewhere. Do not disturb— someone else can put the Banksia Bulletin together, right? ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. On Friday 20th and Saturday 21st September, Quairading Rainmakers Inc hosted the incredible team from Fervor for two magical dinners attended by up to 60 people each night. Folk travelled from near and far, with over half coming from outside of the Quairading district and one very keen bean flying in from over east! Fervor ran a top quality service, dishing up 5 canapes, 4 seated courses and petit fours all from the most well stocked kitchen truck you’ve ever seen. The team spent a few hours in the kitchen at the town hall each morning, then all afternoon cooking onsite at our pop up restaurant—in a paddock, 20km from town. We’re overwhelmingly grateful to Yoda, Steph, Bree, Rohan and Dario from the Fervor team for taking a chance on us and coming to Quairading. The success of this absolutely incredible event was only made possible thanks to the generous local support of so many individuals, families, businesses and organisations. Thank you all so much for your willing supply of goods and services, both paid and donated. We’d like to give a shout out to the following long list of legends: To Greg & Jo Hayes for allowing us to scope out potential dinner locations on their property for months on end in the lead up to the dinners, for never refusing to lend an extra hand, for providing advice, eskies, tea towels, tubs, the best generator we’ve ever seen, aeroguard, one hundred other things and just being the most accommodating hosts we could ever ask for. Windows Estate, from Margaret River, a small, family owned vineyard in the south west were incredibly supportive of our event with Fervor and provided all the wine for both evenings at an incredible price. Next time you’re in the neighbourhood, drop in for a drop! Also a big thanks to Quairading Agri Services for helping us arrange delivery of a pallet of wine to Quairading! Likewise we received great support from Funk Cider who provided us with the best cider in WA for the evening. A business created by two farm raised brothers from Toodyay, their Swan Valley venue provides an excellent pitstop between Perth and Quairading! Thank you to Mitch & Sophie Davies for coordinating the pick up of said Funk and the beautiful chairs hired from Perth. Thanks also to Quairading Club & Quairading Pub for fulfilling all our boozey orders outside of the wine and cider. Special thanks to the Club for logistics and storage PAGE 28
support! Thanks to Capi for a great deal on fancy little soft drinks and mineral waters. Thank you to the powerhouses that are Tarns Fraser and Ros Fraser for transporting portaloos from town to the dinner site and all the many cartons of drinks. Thanks to Cam Fraser, Sarah Caporn and Tarns Fraser for being excellent bus drivers, transporting many locals and visitors alike to and from town. Thanks massively to the Quairading P&C and to Colin & Donna Hayes for providing buses to transport said diners. Thank you to the Quairading Book Post for supporting a local mail drop of invitations and to the Quairading CRC for the printing of those invitations. Thank you to the Shire of Quairading for the in-kind provision of tables, portaloos and the hall kitchen through the Community Grants Program. This support ensured our event was not only a fantastic experience, but financially feasible. Thank you to Quairading Ag Society for allowing us to borrow fire drums and drum tables and to Quairading Football Club for the hire of their beautiful festoon lights. Thank you Marie Walker for snapping away at both nights and providing us with stuning photos to use as a reminder of the beautiful experience of each night—and perhaps use in promoting future events!? Also big thanks to Hannah Carlton for capturing incredible long exposure shots of the Milky Way dancing above our dinner. Thank you Janine Anderson & Wendy Bubb of Flavour Town Catering for providing sustenance to our bar workers each night and for lending a very steady hand to the Fervor team in plating up processes on the Friday night. Thank you Quairading BP for having ice readily available and to Quairading Co-op for filling all of our extra planned and last minutes needs. Thank you Toapin Rise Farm for supply of local extra virgin olive oil, Goodfield Quality Meats (Cunderdin) for the supply of the freshest local lamb possible and the Walkers and Hayes’ for sourcing farm fresh yabbies. Lastly, our Rainmakers Inc volunteers, the biggest superstars we know. Thank you Jen Green, Linden Johnston, Graydon Bond, Cam Fraser and Shaun Simpson to keep the bar servicing running at each

event and to Tamara Spark, Taryn White, Sarah Caporn, Kate Walker, Tarns Fraser and Ros Fraser for providing incredibly professional wait staffing each night. Alex Stacey and Mitch Davies for collecting and carting the very essential firewood Also to all of the above plus Shae Johnston and Kelly Seitz for providing fairy lights, eskies, drinks tubs, candles, knee rugs, full sets of glassware and more from their home collections! Some feedback from our very happy diners: “Thank you so much for organising such an amazing night and for your family for having us on their property. Was truly a magical evening and we can’t wait for the next one!” Michela, Perth. “A couple of great dinners in Quairading this weekend! Thanks to the Quairading Rainmakers Inc for hosting us and the whole community for making us feel so welcome” Fervor, Busselton. “Epic night. It exceeded by expectations by at least ten times!” Scott, Quairading. “What a fabulous way to spend a frosty evening rugged up in the countryside with the locals of Quairading. Serendipity, surprises and an eclectic crowd brought together by curiosity and the opportunity to connect and be fed decadent, locally sources morsels whipped up before our very eyes by Yoda and the Fervor team” Aneta, Como. “It was such an amazing night—the food, people and atmosphere. Dining under the stars in a paddock was freezing, but it was an experience I’ll never forget. Quairading, you’ve left a lasting impression on me and I would love to come back” Lynda, Perth. “Well done on a fantastic weekend!” Hannah, Quairading. Our main purpose in organising and delivering this event was to provide a unique experience which showcased the beauty of our region, and promoted Quairading by attracting new visitors. Through the success of good ticket sales, we’ve also raised some money which will go towards future local projects and events by Quairading Rainmakers Inc. We can’t wait to do it all again! QDHS YEAR 7-10 ENGLISH 2019 This term in English, the year 9/10’s studied the works of William Shakespeare, focusing on the play Macbeth. This culminated with a 20-minute production of an adapted modern version of Macbeth, played at Assembly. Macbeth was played by Adam Cosgrove, with Brock Macdonald taking centre stage with an evil, yet humorous version of Lady Macbeth.
During Bookweek, the year 9/10 class helped the year 1/2 class write their “Reading is my super power” jingle for Bookweek to the song “Shotgun” by George Ezra. They also wrote their own jingle for the Bookweek Assembly to the song “Old Town” by Lil Nas and Billy Ray Cyrus.
The year 7/8’s have been looking at Film conventions and Australian Indigenous Heroes, they had to make a short Documentary about their chosen Australian Indigenous Hero. Their only restriction was that it wasn’t allowed to be a sports star! Students commented on how much they learnt about people they never knew existed, by studying the life and contributions of people like Geoffrey Gurrumul, Eddie Mabo, David Unaipon, Mick Dodson, Faith Thomas and Neville Bonner.
Currently the year 9/10’s are studying Poetic Forms and are creating a Poem from the perspective of someone moving to Australia for the first time. The year 7/8’s are looking at visual conventions used in posters and are creating an Infographic about English, to present to the year 5/6 class.
We have started incorporating a word wall in the classroom this term and have both an English word wall and a Deadly word wall. The purpose of the wall is to try and increase our complex vocabulary and learn some Ballardong Noongar language. PAGE 33

BIG BUS DAY OUT Written by Tamara Spark As residents of this wonderful community we can become complacent or are even somewhat oblivious of the amazing sights and amenities we have. Visit Quairading WA is a tourism promotion campaign that has been created and is run by the Quairading CRC with the purpose of tourist promotion, and the Big Bus Day Out was planned and delivered with that same purpose. 25- mainly local-tourists boarded the community bus nice and early outside the Quairading Club on the first day of the month and the official first day of spring. The planned itinerary included stops at Toapin Weir, Toapin Rise Farm for a olive oil tasting and olive grove tour and Kokerbin rock, with Kwolyin campsite to be our picnic lunch stop. Despite it being the first day of Spring we could not have picked a colder or wetter day, luckily we had an adaptable crew that were not perturbed by some slight modifications to the itinerary and even came up with the novel idea to lunch at our very own caravan park. Here we were able to enjoy the pristine amenities that are generally only experienced by real tourists. I could confidently say that Toapin Rise Farm was a fan favourite, it was the third time for me personally attending one of their tastings and I still haven’t had enough! That’s not to take away from the stunning natural wonders that are Kokerbin and the rock and wildflowers at Toapin Weir. If you are a weir virgin yourself, and we did have someone lose their weir virginity on the day, I suggest you lose yours too… and soon! That way we can all be better advocates for our piece of paradise that is Quairading. PAGE 35

Q-TOWN DOES IT AGAIN! An thank you from local superstar, Indiana Squiers Nothing ever surprises me about my home town of Quairading, people all the time say ‘Where do you live?’ and I reply ‘Quairading!’. Their response ‘what - Qwwweradaine?’ or something to that effect. I am sure you’ve all heard it a thousand times. This always makes me giggle but I always have the same response to all of them, ‘You must come and visit my hometown and come stay with me on the farm, it is the best.’ And I’m not lying when I say the best. Just recently I have been lucky enough to be selected in the State 15’s and Under Netball side. There was a long process involved including the start when 250 girls tried out. As you could imagine I never thought I would have made it all the way through but somehow, I made it and I got that email!! You can imagine the smile on my face and my Mum and Dad’s! My destination was Brisbane, knowing this I thought how I am I going to support myself and thinking of poor Mum and Dad of the cost to get me there. So, I wrote to my town of Quairading! This is where I know Q-town is full of great supportive people! I cannot thank the kind people and businesses enough that supported me to get there by either donating money or just buying a raffle ticket! FURTHER SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTRES Wednesday, 25 September 2019
 
McGowan Government supporting security and sustainability for Community Resource Centres (CRCs) in regional WA Individual CRCs offered two-year contract extension
The McGowan Government is supporting Community Resource Centres (CRCs) to maximise service delivery and provide valuable community hubs in rural and regional areas around the State. The State Government has offered a two-year contract extension for all 89 CRCs currently funded on a contract basis, and continued grant funding for 13 CRCs which operate on ongoing grants. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) will work with the CRC network on a future tender process that will provide longer-term contracts for individual CRCs. This work will commence mid-2020. DPIRD will also continue to identify opportunities for CRC to support delivery of government services in regional and rural communities. CRCs are not-for-profit organisations contracted to provide access to government and community services and information, and undertake community, business and economic development activities. The McGowan Government has secured long-term funding for the CRC program. Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan: "CRCs are owned and operated by their local communities, and our government recognises the valuable services they provide, particularly in small regional communities. "I have written to CRCs today offering an extension to their current contract from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2022. "We remain completely committed to funding the CRC program, and will continue to work with the CRC network to identify how we can support CRCs to better deliver services in their local communities. "The aim is to work towards a longer contract for five years to allow for security and sustainability for these organisations." PAGE 38

QUAIRADING SUB CENTRE Engaging with our community! Quairading sub centre recently continued their sustained community engagement campaign, “Caring for our kids”, an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) to Quairading District High School. This is part of an extended push to equip and educate our community so that they are able to confidently assist in saving lives. School Principal, Pauline Wray is keen for her school community to be a part of the initiative and staff at the school will be given the opportunity to undertake Advanced Resuscitation Training. The St John Ambulance volunteers of Quairading sub centre also donated a First Aid Manual for each school building and a First Aid kit for each staff member. This ongoing program will also encourage the use of the First Responder App and AED training, as well as a First Aid Focus program for all students. Community Paramedic Drew Richardson commented that “within any community a shared sense of responsibility and early intervention – even before an ambulance can be deployed, is the key to greater success when dealing with critically ill patients.” His comments are supported by latest research and trends world-wide in pre-hospital care and reflect the direction that St John Ambulance has been working towards as a modern service. Chairperson Janet Hall, (also a teacher) and VSO John Hards helped make the presentation and made arrangements for the defibrillator to be registered with the First Responder programme. This means that if a “000” call in the immediate vicinity requires a defibrillator; the operator can direct the member of public to the location where it is kept and provide direction in its application and use.
BECKY COWCILL SHIRE COUNCIL CANDIDATE I shifted to Quairading in 1983 when I married Allen Cowcill and after working for his uncle for several years we joined the family farming enterprise, we now live on the original family farm in the Wamenusking area. We have four children and several grandchildren. Whilst the children were growing up and attending QDHS I was active in the P&C, Canteen and School Council, including being Chairperson for several years. I have been involved in many community associations including volunteer ambulance officer, volunteer community car driver, tennis and golf clubs and have held various committee positions within these, and am current vice president of the Wamenusking Sports Club. I also enjoyed working at the Quairading Tyre and Battery Supplies for over ten years. As a farmer/contractor and also having worked in a local town business I believe I have a unique viewpoint of how both primary producers and trading businesses operate. If elected I anticipate the challenge of being an active councillor and would look to securing our Shire’s future with strong economic planning and well considered strategies in this ever changing political climate. WA’S FIRST TRAVELLING DEMENTIA BUS Hitting the Road for Dementia Awareness Month Leading not-for-profit community-based organisation, Community Vision is leading the way in dementia awareness as WA’s first travelling community dementia bus gets out and about during Dementia Awareness Month (September). Dementia Awareness Month aims to develop a dementia-friendly nation, and ultimately create communities where people with dementia are supported. The first bus visit will take place on Sunday 8th September with a day visit to the Badjaling Aboriginal Community, 10kms east of Quairading and it will serve two purposes. It will provide an opportunity for Community Vision to learn more about the local community, the people and the land they live on. It will also provide an opportunity for the dementia bus to educate locals on the disease, the support that’s available and how to cope with the disease when it affects loved ones and those within the community. Community Vision also recently secured a tender with Badjaling Aboriginal Community to provide disability support services as part of the Governments Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) program. ILC is all about inclusion – creating connections between people with disability and the communities they live in. Unlike the rest of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), ILC doesn’t provide funding to individuals, but rather grants to organisations to deliver projects in the community that benefit all Australians with disability, their carers and families.
Community Vision’s travelling dementia bus has been made possible by the generosity of West Australians – supporting a bold fundraising campaign called A Roast to Remember. The fundraising campaign encourages people to get friends, family and neighbours together for a special roast dinner and raise funds or simply go online and donate. It will also see the launch of a Celebrity Recipe Booklet later in the year. Whilst visiting the Badjaling Aboriginal Community they will host their version of a roast dinner with a traditional barbeque. All funds raised to date are what has made the travelling bus a reality, and further funds raised will be used to service and man the bus and continue its journey, with the aim of visiting a minimum of two locations each week covering metro, regional and rural WA. Community Vision CEO Michelle Jenkins says, “As more people are affected by dementia the need for awareness greatens. We hope that our awareness building, respite and education via and the bus, will help the whole community to understand what a person with dementia experiences and prepare them better with how to cope.”
The travelling bus will also be visiting relevant community events throughout Dementia Awareness Month to provide the opportunity for the wider community, who don’t have immediate access to local services to get the education, respite and advice they need when it comes to dealing with those living with dementia. It will also offer access to new technology and innovations such as Virtual Reality (VR) for those living with the disease. The inside of the bus is fully air conditioned and fitted with sensory materials to help reduce frustration, stress and anxiety. There is also tea and coffee facilities and a pull-out awning on the exterior of the bus. Manned by two staff, the bus will also allow carers and loved ones of those living with dementia to get some respite as well as seek advice Above are some photos from the Badjaling visit that occurred between the writing of this media release and the Banksia and learn new therapy techniques or methods of Bulletin publishing date. dealing with a loved one with dementia.

GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm We are experiencing the usual variations in temperatures which come with spring. And although September was disappointing as far as rain was concerned at least we didn’t have to bear too many hot days. All the plants are happy and blooming, many of the roses are out and our gardens are a pleasure to behold; all be it with some persistent weeds which thrive under these temperate conditions. It’s always at this time of the year that I think, why didn’t I spray the garden beds with pre emergent. I always do the paths and some of the paved areas around the house but I never get around to all the beds. Next year will be different! Looking ahead to October, a little more rain would be a blessing and hopefully the hot days that are bound to come will be separated by cool ones. Plant of the Month – Lavender is my choice for plant of the month. This is not only because I’m looking out on a most beautiful Lavender covered in blooms but also because it is a very hardy and undemanding plant in our gardens. There are many varieties available and all originated in Europe around the Mediterranean region. The English varieties were introduced by the Romans but it is the French and Italian Lavenders which are best suited to our area. Their foliage tends to be a lighter shade of grey and therefore more able to reflect the intense sun light of our summers. One English variety called Hidcote does quite well here but prefers some shade. There are also many new hybrids which have been introduced and have more colour variations than the traditional lavender colour; there pinks, almost whites and combinations of those. There is also a new range which should soon be available in W.A. which has a double flower in a deep purple shade. Lavender is definitely the plant for the busy gardener, for the large garden which has many spots to fill or for the garden where water is in short supply but beauty is still important. At the end of spring, the Lavender flowers fade in colour but they stay upright on the plant so it never looks untidy. This is the time to take out the hedger and give the plant a good hair cut, however, it is important never to cut into old growth which has no leaves as it may not shoot again from these branches, making the annual hair cut important in keeping the whole plant in good shape. Lavenders require very little in the way of fertiliser but applying a little organic fertiliser during its growing season would be beneficial and lead to more flowers next season. Of course I should also have mentioned that Lavender is a medicinal herb and as such has been used for centuries for its antiseptic, anti-viral and anti-fungal qualities. The lavender essential oil has been used for making perfume in France since the seventeenth century. Sachets of dried Lavender flowers and leaves placed with cleaned winter woolies help to ward off moths. It’s time to… Plant – all summer vegetables can be planted during October; for our area (if you can provide 50% shade once December starts) these include: tomatoes, capsicums, cucumbers, eggplants, early beans, corn, pumpkins, zucchini, watermelon, rock melon, honey dew melons and
Cos lettuce. Sow – second crops of any of the above vegetables so that you can extend your harvest and also late October is a good time to sow Eucalyptus seeds for the following year. Harvest – at Eaglewood Farm we will be picking and eating and freezing broad beans and peas almost every day and will continue until the second or third week of October depending on the weather. There are still some winter root vegetables in the garden and there are fennel bulbs and lettuce for salads. The artichokes are still producing and the leeks and spring onions are delicious. In the orchard the citrus are looking wonderful with their bright orange globes dripping off each branch reminding me it’s marmalade making time. Things to do – weeding still needs to be done so that fewer seeds are set for next year; Banksia roses and other spring blooming shrubs need to be pruned when flowering has finished, this include native plants such as bottlebrushes; repeat flowering roses need to be deadheaded to encourage more flowers; this is a good time to start new hedges and topiaries; October is also time to feed everything in the garden whether it’s flowerbeds, vegetables, lawns, shrubs or trees; this is also a good time to mulch, it will keep the root area cool and help conserve moisture for feeder roots and beneficial fungi to survive during summer. The last word – We come from the earth, we return to the earth and in between we garden.

ALIENS IN THE OUTBACK & MOVIES IN THE WHEATBELT
Fractured Visions Films is a Quairading based film company that some of you may be aware have been working on a few different film projects, including most recently a psychological sci-fi horror thriller feature film called High Strangeness which is currently in it’s final stages of production. We wanted to share with the community what has been happening to keep you all updated, as our aim with our film company is to put back into the community by discovering talent, eventually creating employment and promoting tourism, and bringing other film companies to the area to discover the unique and wonderful landscapes and surroundings we have to offer in the central wheat-belt. A couple of years ago we created a trailer for a film called The Unhallowed which we have received a cinema distribution deal for. In today’s climate of movies going straight to Netlfix and other VOD services, getting a cinema distribution deal is a big thing. Whilst we waited for funding/investment to come through to make the full feature, we took it upon ourselves to start work on another film completely funded by ourselves. Recent talks with our distribution company have said we should receive the funding for The Unhallowed off the back of High Strangeness. Welcome to the world of movies - It is a complicated world of making trailers before movies, making movies to get funds before making other movies. But it is completely rewarding, especially when you see all your hard work come to life before you on the screen. High Strangeness is an alien abduction film, starring quite a few local actors, including Britt Hadlow - who plays the main character Abigail White, it also stars Amity Russell-Scheffler as Cathy, Nyssa RussellScheffler, Simone Chalker, Brock MacDonald and quite a few other familiar faces. Plus Perth actors and legendary Australian Film Maker Philippe Mora also stars in the film. The film is set on location at Hadlow’s farm, and we were fortunate to be able to capture the spectacular landscape of the farm thanks to drone work by our Cinematographer Simon Akkerman, who is one of Australia’s leading cinematographer’s and has worked with Nicole Kidman and also on Master and Commander with Russell Crowe. Simon is also our cinematographer for The Unhallowed. The High Strangeness work print is 98% complete, we have around 3 more weeks of filming left, before actors have to do a bit of ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement, in which the actor re-records their dialogue and dubs over their lines for improvement in audio quality. The work print is then sent to America to be approved by LA Producer, then final edit is done and the Screener is sent to distribution company to be released on DVD, Blu-ray and released to VOD with high possibility of Netflix. Hopefully we will have a small theatre run in Perth and Melbourne as well. We will have the first screening in Quairading before going public, so the community can see it first. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us so far in the making of this film, everyone who asks me how things are going with the film. The IGA for allowing us to film in there. We truly appreciate the support and encouragement. We also just recently signed a contract to make a series of documentaries for an organisation, which is keeping us extremely busy. Fractured Visions Films is always looking for community members who are keen to unleash their talents in front of the screen or behind. So don’t be shy, you can always approach us if you are interested in film. PAGE 47

LI’L LOUIE RENEWED!
The Quairading Vintage Club recently sought sponsors to contribute to the renewal and upkeep of Li’l Louie. As the photos show, a number of generous businesses around Quairading came forward with sponsorship and for this the Vintage Club is very grateful. The club would also like to acknowledge and thank Daryl Bubb, Quairading Smash Repairs, for donating his time in repainting the trailers. Local sign writer, Todd Johnson, organised the artwork and printing of the new stickers, which all look great. Thanks Todd. Mitchell Davies helped out with the aluminium welding repairs - a task beyond our members. Thanks Mitchell. There is still space on the trailers for more stickers. Enquiries can be made at the Vintage Club. Please support our local businesses where you can. Peter Smith President, Quairading Vintage Club SOME BONUS HISTORY VIA VISIT QUAIRADING WA LIL LOUIE was built in 1989, with design and coordination by Chris Laycock and authorisation from Ford Trucks in the USA to be built as a Ford LTL 9000. Chris took apporx. 400 hours to build the plug for the cab out of wood which was then made into moulds. All the painting and assembly was carried out at Farmpower, a local machinery dealership, by Chris along with some Farmpower staff and local townspeople. The estimated cost of time and materials for this fantastic project was $250 000. Our thanks to the Laycock family for getting in touch and providing this information and more. 30 years on Lil Louie is still going strong! You'll find Lil Louie at our 99th Ag Show on Saturday 12th October providing delight for kids, young and old as they ride around the showgrounds. PAGE 49

Noongar Cultural Corner A monthly article produced in collaboration with local Noongar representatives and Noongar cultural organisations.
CHARLIE COLBUNG EXHIBITION Mr Charlie Colbung recently held an exhibition displaying Art work at the Community Resource Centre . It was good to see keen attendance to the exhibition. Displayed are just some of the works on offer. There were also works on display by local artist Mrs Beryl Dick. The art was very reasonably price considering the immense talent on display. Great to see lots of sold tickets on art work .Well done to all involved.
BADJALING LAUNCH Community vision recently came to Badjaling to launch their brand new Dementia support van. Community Vision supports people with disabilities and other disabilities through out the community. The new van will be touring Western Australia providing assistance to the community. It was terrific to see the great work carried out by community vision. If you would like to contribute or have input into this monthly article please contact Danny 0427 450 127 PAGE 51

ABORIGINAL CROSS-CULTURAL AWARENESS DAY
WA Sandalwood Plantations (WASP), market leaders in the growing and management of commercial Australian Sandalwood, conducted their Aboriginal cross-cultural awareness day in Quairading on the 7th of August 2019. Led by group CEO Keith Drage, employees of the company from both the Head Office and Regional HQ converged for the day accompanied by personnel from support company Tree Farm Contractors (TFC). This historic event happened on the backdrop of one of WASP’s affiliate companies, wood processor and oil distiller Dutjahn Sandalwood Oils (DSO), winning the United Nations Equator Prize. Located in Kalgoorlie, DSO is jointly owned and operated by the founders WASP in a 50/50 partnership with the Dutjahn Custodians and is the only Australian organisation to have won the coveted United Nations award. As a manager of over 13,000 of plantations in the WA Wheatbelt and neighbour of the Badjaling Aboriginal Community, WASP considers that cross cultural awareness training is an essential component of its sustainable plantations business. The day began with a morning training session at the Quairading CRC boardroom facilitated by Noongar and Badjaling community elders Murray and Lorna Yarran. Participants were educated on the history of Aboriginal people and provided with knowledge on how to engage with indigenous groups in a culturally acceptable manner. Murray explained the depth and diversity of Aboriginal culture in the southwest and elsewhere in Australia and highlighted some similarities and differences with other world PAGE 52
cultures. Murray demystified many aspects of Aboriginal history and made all participants feel at ease with his punchline “It is what it is, it’s not about judgement”. The facilitators concluded the morning session with a brief history of the Badjaling community, as a precursor to the visit which the participants were going to make shortly thereafter. Located about 10 km east of Quairading, the Badjaling Aboriginal Community is a regionally important centre of cultural heritage for the Noongar people. Murray led the group on a familiarisation tour through the Badjaling reserve, which houses significant monuments like the old hospital site, school site, water well and a placard engraves with names of the founding families (see picture below). In addition, the reserve also has a plethora of flora and fauna including the rare and endangered Matchstick Banksia (Banksia cuneata). The Noongar people traditionally sourced a wide variety of foods and natural medicines from the native vegetation, and hence they always endeavour to conserve it. The community members have also planted thousands of trees at the reserve. After the field walk, the participants were treated to some Aboriginal cuisine which included a delicious kangaroo stew. Keith Drage gave closing remarks on behalf of the WASP team. In addition to expressing his gratitude to the hosts, Keith presented Murray with a set of clapping sticks made from plantation timbers as a token of appreciation from the company and symbol of ongoing collaboration.

WARRIOR WELLBEING THE BLOKE WHISPERER … (Talking to Blokes About Health And Wellbeing) Getting blokes to talk openly and frankly about health issues can sometimes be a struggle, especially if they feel like they can’t show vulnerability, or they don’t want to worry others with their problems. Whilst I’m the first to admit that talking about fishing and footy is great, we need to be open to broadening the range of topics that we are happy to cover in general conversation. The importance of this is bought into sharp focus when you see that blokes are on the wrong side of the ledger in terms of all the preventable cancers, cardiovascular disease, suicide rates, workplace accidents/deaths and motor vehicle trauma. There’s some serious stuff we need to talk about, but currently, many of us aren’t! Sometimes when trying to address this, the old adage about getting in touch with our feminine side gets wheeled out, but it’s important that we realise that men and women are hard-wired differently. We communicate differently, show our emotions differently, take risks and like to win, however if a bloke feels in a safe place he will talk. The following are some useful tips when chatting to blokes:
Shoulder to Shoulder Talk: Blokes tend to feel much more comfortable talking side by side. A shared task or sport is often a great starting point. A few explanations have been offered as to why this is our favoured stance: Blokes can find direct eye contact challenging; They place less emphasis on reading someone’s face and tend to take others by their word. Steer Away from the Language of Failure: Blokes can be quite sensitive to turns of phrase like “suffering from” or “needing help”. This to them may suggest that in some way they are failing
themselves or their family. Therefore rephrasing “seeking help” to “taking control” may help your cause. Don’t Make it a Big Conversation: If you are concerned for a bloke in your life, it can be tempting to prepare yourself for one big chat. This can feel like an ambush and be counterproductive. Instead, mention health and wellbeing in passing, even if initially it is framed around someone else. Once the topic is introduced, let it run its course. It may take a couple of conversations to explore or explain your concerns and get him talking comfortably. Persist: If it’s worrying you, it’s probably worrying him. A bloke’s initial reluctance to engage may just reflect a nervousness around the subject matter. A second or third approach won’t go astray. After that it’s probably time to give him some space with the option to take up the offer when it suits him. Mr Fix It: Guys tend to be task oriented and prefer that approach when talking about and tackling problems. They want to have a clear purpose, therefore a general discussion around feelings just doesn’t cut it! Conversations that are goal oriented and have a clear direction are the most effective.
Of course, every bloke is different, but if we start to play to our strengths rather than highlighting our weaknesses, inevitably the lines of communication will become stronger. If we can achieve this then the health and wellbeing outcomes for men can only improve.

QUAIRADING TENNIS CLUB And we’re back!! Just like that Spring is upon us and this brings us lily white legs and dusty racquets. Our season is officially opening on Sunday 13th October, yes the day after show day and the last day of school holidays, but before then, we’re going to have a bit of a clean up as we are very proud to be hosting 2 Central Districts Zone Squad days before we take to the courts. This Busy Bee will be held on Friday 4th October at 5pm. After a bit of a tidy up, we will then all head to the Quairading Club for tea. Everyone is welcome. We would love the extra help and new faces around. As per last year I am seeking interest in Junior Coaching on Fridays before cricket and if the interest is there, cardio tennis with a mix of adult coaching for us folk looking at getting a tad fitter before Summer hits. I’m thinking that if you speak to anyone that participated last year in either the coaching or cardio, you’ll get pretty positive feedback that it’s well worth the dollars. The course I’m hoping will run for 6 weeks but I’m yet to confirm this with the coach. Please nominate your interest to Kelli Brown—0429 457 039 or kellyall@westnet.com.au by 7th October. Cost depends on numbers. Hopefully this tennis coaching gets off the ground and is a great lead up to our annual junior doubles and mixed doubles day which will be held in the middle of November.
