As per usual, and rightly so, I’ve left jotting down my ramblings from the editor until the last second and now I’m battling against the clock to get it finished. And by clock I obviously mean 7:30pm on Wednesday when another dramatic instalment of The Honey Badgelor is due to begin.

We’re geared for a big start to October with Quairading Ag Show preparations reaching peak very soon, and staying peaked for a little while. From what I hear, from very credible sources such as myself, is that the Quairading Ag Society have a shed load of fun planned for the 2018 show. There’s oodles of information for you to ingest on pages 15 through 25 of this Banksia Bulletin.

The weekend following the show is the big Beyond Blue Fundraiser at the Pub. Tracey has put in an epic effort to organise this generous event—hit her up for a ticket and get down to it (info on page 28).

We’ve also got a really great amount of locally written articles in this edition (you guys are the best!). From gardening to community spirit, to funky fermentation—there’s some light reading material for everyone. And if there’s not, then why not try your hand at writing some content for the best local paper in town yourself?! They say writing can be very cathartic. Or in my case, a real adrenalin rush when you know Osher G is about to grace the TV set and your not-really-real reality-televisionobsessed soul is about to miss it.

Because you love reading (and I know you do because you’re still reading this) have a gander at the feedback from our most recent Business After Hours on page 41. I’m so stoked to see so many of our community members passionate about making our top notch town the best it can be. Let this quick note be your motivation and permission to not just talk about these great ideas, but to go out and just do them! While you’re at it, follow @quairading_thrive on Instagram for your daily dose of economic positive Quairading news and thought provoking content!

TERM 4 TENNIS COACHING The Quairading Tennis Club is hoping to run an 8-week coaching course in term 4 on a Friday afternoon. QUAIRADING YOUTH CENTRE October Update The permaculture garden is coming along well we are hoping to have some vegetables planted by the end of October. A big thanks Steve from DIGGING DOCKER for keeping us in mind; he found a bio filter pump for our aquaponics section. We are looking for some manure to kick start the garden. If anyone has a trailer load they can supply to get it going that would be much appreciated; we will come and collect it.

We had 30 kids attend the Youth Centre on one of our days; a great game of cricket with that many participants.

We had a camp out this month. The temperatures were cold but we had a camp fire and the kids played pool till 11pm and giggled ‘til early hours of the morning!

EPIC VALUE FOR THE KIDS! The Quairading Ag Show has always been a great day out for the kids, but this year you’re going to get insane bang for your buck.

The Kids Tent is back once again and better than ever, with FREE activities for the little ones. Two face painters will be on hand to turn you into a lion, a pretty butterfly or anything in between. Plus colouring and craft activities and the infamous pile of sand! There will also be performances by “Sparkles” (Children’s Entertainer) at 11am and 2pm.

Tony Scutters and his team will have their great set up of all your favourite side show arcade games AND two bouncey castles to jump out all of that excess energy. Our friends from Quairading PCYC Air Rifles will be manning the bouncey castles on the day.

The (free) Activity Trail is a great way to get the kids to see the sights of the whole show, and learn a thing or two along the way. Get an Activity Trail Passport from the gate or the Info Booth and follow the map to visit all ten sites and collect a stamp from each. There’ll be questions to answer and activities to complete at each site—it’s sure to be a ripper!

Fill in your passport and drop it in the box in the Ag Shed and you’ll go in the draw to win a tablet! Thank you to the Quairading CRC for organising this year’s trail.

Airborn Amusements will be on site with an Inflatble Climbing Wall which is FREE to climb all day long! It can take four people at once, hello climbing race.

GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk Well September was a pleasant month, a little sunshine and a little rain, although probably not as much as we gardeners would have liked.

October usually brings the first over thirty degree days, however, there is still no need to water established trees and shrubs just yet, however, the under eaves baskets, pots and newly planted plants may need a little moisture once the temperatures creep up. We are very lucky in our part of the world especially at this time of the year, the fields, the bushland and even the roadsides are brimming with healthy crops and native flowers. If you have the opportunity to invite city friends to visit our lovely area, now is a great time to show it off at its best.

Plant of the Month Boronia crenulata, pink passion is sometimes called ‘the boronia for beginners’ which gives the reader the idea that it is not as difficult to grow nor as fussy as other boronias may be. It forms a small shrub up to 75cm high and the same width; it has pendulous branches covered in small pink flowers from August right through till the end of November. It is happy to grow in full sun or part shade and it is not fussy about soil type as long as it doesn’t get water logged for too long. It is drought hardy when established and a light frost doesn’t bother it.

After flowering it should get a light trim to keep it in shape. This is another Western Australian native that fits in well in a garden of exotics.

Sow – Nothing to sow this month Harvest – Red mulberries and loquats are the earliest fruits of spring, they’re not available in shops so it’s great to have your own. The last of the globe artichokes can be harvested when still small and pickled. Some flowers can be left on these plants as the make a dramatic statement in the garden.

Chores – Feed and water young plants and It’s time to …… seedlings deeply so that their roots are encouraged to grow deep and are more resilient Plant – lf you haven’t already put in the summer when the real summer hits them; feed and dead veggies put them in now. Native flowering shrubs head roses and check for aphids; make a manure and trees can be planted during this month as tea to feed native plants, mow lawns regularly long as you are able to keep them well watered and not too short because a hot day can burn a during the coming summer. Hello Quairadingites,

We have been a community for 111 years and we have survived droughts, earthquakes, This feature article is not going to be on how fires and flood events, the sad times and I survived ‘Dry July’ (or any other month) or happy happenings. We have been able to how I went a whole year not buying clothes (I build our community by promoting it as a wish I had the will power to do that) and I safe and happy environment for people of all highly commend anyone who does BUT I do ages to live. Shopping and supporting local business is vitally important to the survival of our community and town. These businesses whether they be the Co-op, one of our Ag merchants or garden shop, support many of our sporting or service clubs that you may be involved in. So by them supporting you, shouldn’t you support them?

What is “sense of community” you ask? Back in the day I would have gone to the Funk and Wagnell dictionary and looked up the meaning, but today I just asked Mr Google and this is what popped up McMillan & Chavis (1986) define sense of community as "a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members' needs will be met through their commitment to be together". I think that sums Quairading up nicely.

It is the old saying “if you don’t use it, you will lose it”.

So back to Mr Google’s definition of sense of community, by belonging to a community, you care what is happening in the community and you are committed to keeping the community together.

FERMENTING FOR HEALTH Written by Tamara Spark

Never one to shy away from a novel health craze (yes I was a short lived devotee of bikram and aerial yoga and once had a bench, fridge and pantry full of varying degrees of decomposed foods), I was thrilled at the chance to participate in a fermenting for health workshop here in Quairading.

For those not in the know fermentation “is a metabolic process that consumes sugar in the absence of oxygen.

The products are organic acids, gases, or alcohol. It occurs in yeast and bacteria, and also in oxygen-starved muscle cells, as in the case of lactic acid fermentation. The science of fermentation is known as zymology”(En.wikipedia.org, 2018). The process of fermentation allows for preservation of food, increased flavour and is a great source of natural good bacteria to help balance out your internal gut microbiome. The sugars are burned up during the fermentation process and this makes it easier for your body to breakdown and access the nutrients available. The culinary histories of nearly all tribes and societies contain at least one beloved fermented dish and let’s not forget the indelible contribution this body of science has made to the intoxicating benefits of alcohol.

The workshop was led by Janet Robertson who lives locally and runs her own health focussed business, Nourishabley, based in Beverley. The task for the day was for all 15 ladies present to make our own batches of Sauerkraut while absorbing Janet’s knowledge of all things ‘Bifidobacterium’ and ‘Lactobacillus’. She brought along with her a plethora of vibrant and bubbling jars of zinging tomatoes, tangy lemons, beet kvass, kimchi, homemade seed crackers and sour kefir cow’s milk and coconut milk.

The event was run as a women’s health week initiative and all present received a little Jean Hailes goodie bag as well as a take home list of recipes and info from Janet, their jars of sauerkraut and also some kefir grains. We hope that the knowledge and takeaways from the day help to propel people along on their food for health journeys.

My take away from the day was that fermentation can be a little time consuming but if you prioritise your health then you’ll make time for it. A few present for the enjoyable morning decided they would prioritise this new found knowledge and partaking of fermented foods immediately and joined the croppy tour that afternoon.

SAUERKRAUT & VARIATIONS A recipe from the Fermenting for Health Workshop courtesy of Janet from Nourishabley.

The name sauerkraut roughly translates from German to English as ‘sour herb’. The dish, however, is far tastier then its namesake and its appearance lend. It’s also über economical and has a shelf life of at least 6 months. There is no need for a price comparison this week as you will see the total ingredients list couldn’t come to much more than a fiver and the Co-op has everything you’ll need (you can even grab it at 5:30am on a weekday if you are so inclined). The fermentation process is accelerated by warmth and therefore the process is generally much faster in warmer weather. A simple taste test every few days will help you determine the optimum time to move the sauerkraut to the fridge and halt the process, 1-2 weeks is generally long enough. If you like it tangy and zingy then allow it to ferment longer. A longer ferment = maximum probiotics.

INGREDIENTS  1 Cabbage (red, green, Chinese or any and all)  1-2 tablespoons of Himalayan rock salt*  1 large carrot TOOLS  Sharp Knife or mandoline slicer  Jars with lids (cleaned with hot water only)  Plastic/glass/ceramic bowl  Tamper and weights#  Food grade gloves METHOD Step 1: Chop/slice the entire cabbage, core included, into fine strips (shredded).

Step 2: Sprinkle the salt over the cabbage, bung on your gloves and massage it in for 5-10 minutes until the cabbage wilts and starts releasing its moisture.

Step 3: Leave aside covered for approximately 3 hours.

Step 4: Return and add the carrot, massage again for a couple of minutes. There should be lots of brine now.

Step 5: Compress the mixture into your jars using your tamper. Make sure that the mixture is completely covered by a layer of brine at the top.

Step 6: Cover the jar with a breathable piece of muslin or coffee filter and a lacky band and allow to culture at room temperature out of direct sunlight but not in a dark cupboard. Somewhere out of the way on a kitchen bench is perfect. Once the desired level of ferment is reached seal and move to cold storage. Placing the jar on a towel or in another bowl will capture any bubbling over brine.

Step 7: Top your hotdogs, pizzas, pork chops, make a Rueben sandwich, add to mashed potatoes, or get your Polish on and make a potato and kraut pierogi! Almost anything cruciferous, or not for that matter, can be turned into Kraut and you can intensify the flavours by adding herbs and spices or Korean it up into Kimchi with the addition of soy, chilli and fish sauce. *Himalayan sea salt contains over 84 minerals and trace elements, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron, so it does more than just make your food taste better. # A tool used to pack the cabbage mixture into your jars, you can use a wooden spoon, your fist, a pestel or what ever works. So that oxidization and mould do not result on your ferment you need to keep the cabbage mixture covered by the brine always.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS: A walk down the main street

On Wednesday 12 September 2018 the Wheatbelt Business Network, together with the Quairading Community Resource Centre jointly hosted a Business After Hours which incorporated a main street walk. There was an excellent turnout of 34 people. The main street walk commenced at the Quairading Co-op and the group walked down the main street towards the town hall stopping at various businesses for an update and discussion. Then the group turned around and walked up towards the Quairading Pub and received an update on the proposed nature playground. The positivity by everyone was excellent and there were many comments towards businesses about how they had made small and large improvements to shop fronts. Delicious catering was provided by new local business, Flavour Town Catering.

BALLET UPDATE

From Harrison Woodcock & co I do get the feeling we have a busy life! I am trying to recall all that we have done in dance since I last wrote! Harrison did very well in the Annual Ballet Exams, which were held on 23rd July in Toodyay, receiving 96% for his Grade Five exam. The following week he also took part in the State Medal Test and received a Special Mention.

Over the following two days we were in Perth for him to receive Specialised Coaching and to take part in a Masterclass with the Australian Ballet School during their visit to Western Australia. It is always lovely for him to be a part of these classes, and to be able to meet up with friends from the year before who are also invited to attend.

In the same week Harrison took part in an audition with WA Ballet for their production of Dracula. It was very exciting to see over 60 boys there, having a go. We were thrilled when we found out that he was successful! It has been fabulous for him to be back being part of the WA Ballet. The Performances will be over by the time you read this, but he has had a great time, and we are so grateful to all the people that asked and took an interest, and some even bravely trekked down to watch at His Majesty’s. It was such a powerful performance, and so many of the WA Ballet Company remembered Harrison and were so pleased to see him again.

Child Guest Artists 2018 We had the wonderful opportunity of meeting Alex McKinnon, a male ballet dancer with the Hanover Staatsoper in Germany, whose parents Anne Maree Hayes and Cr Brett McGuinness happen to live here in the Quairading Shire! Whilst he was in WA during July and August, he very generously made time to meet with Harrison and myself and shared his journey from being a child that was introduced to dance and following that path to the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne at 14 years of age, and on to a career in dance in Europe.

He was very humble and spoke openly of his experiences, offering Harrison any support he could give. Alex had brought with him a poster from Germany from their latest production, ‘Moving Lights’ that his fellow Dance Company members had signed with messages of encouragement for Harrison. It was such a

Harrison had taken part in Hip Hop classes with Miss Jade throught the year, but also performed as part of the Toodyay Ballet School Competition Team. He performed his Classical Solo, his Lyrical solo, and also in a lovely Lyrical trio. It is such a positive thing, to dance in your own town.

Book Week 2018!

Saturday 18th August – Friday 24th August.

Each year, the Children’s Book Council of Australia brings both children and books together by celebrating Book Week. During this time, schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children celebrate children’s literature.

Book Week often sees people dress up as their favourite book character, create eye-catching book displays and read a variety of literature. Each year, there is a theme for Book Week, with the theme for 2018 being ‘Find Your Treasure!’

From Monday 20th August to Friday 24th August, the staff and students at Quairading District High School celebrated Book Week 2018. Over the week, a variety of whole-school activities were organized for both the staff and students of Quairading District High School. These activities included; each class making their very own eye-catching door display, Mrs. Pauline Wray (Quairading District High School Principal) reading a story to each class, each student making a paper bag book review based on a book they may be reading or have read previously, the year five and year six students hosting the Book Week assembly with a wonderful item and arguably one of the most popular events on the

school calendar, the Book Week dressup parade.

On Monday, students began to brainstorm ideas for their classroom door displays. This saw students review a variety of texts, express their creativity and work together to produce a masterpiece. Tuesday and Wednesday saw the students of Quairading District High School continue to create their classroom door displays and begin their paper bag book reviews. This required students to choose one of their favourite books, recreate the front cover of the chosen story on the front of the paper bag, provide a summary of the story on the back of the paper bag and place five significant items relating to the story inside the paper bag. Mrs. Wray also visited each classroom to read a book to the students.

On Thursday, students finished off their classroom door displays and paper bag book reviews, before preparing their Book Week costumes, ready for the Book Week parade. Friday saw the year five and six students perform a very entertaining assembly item before hosting the Book Week assembly for 2018. Students from pre-primary to year ten participated in the Book Week

parade; showing off their magnificent costumes with a ‘best dressed’ prize was awarded to one student from each year level.

The staff of Quairading District High School continued the spirit of Book Week by also participating in the parade. This saw Mr. Tom Curtin take home the ‘best dressed’ prize, dressing up as Dora the Explorer.

To conclude the events of Book Week 2018, Mrs. Pamela Canova and Gwen Hards chose the winners of the classroom door displays. All staff and students put an enormous amount of effort into their door displays. This left Mrs. Canova and Mrs. Hards with a very challenging job. Despite all of the classroom doors being prize-worthy, the 2018 Book Week door display winners were both the year one and year two/ three classroom doors.

Book Week 2018 saw students create unique displays, participate in a variety of literacy-based activities and further connect with children’s literature. It was an exciting week that brought joy to both the staff and students of Quairading District High School. We look forward to Book Week 2019!

1st: Verna Blackburne 2nd: Russell Stacey 3rd: Verna Blackburne Last month our subject was a framed pic. The idea was not to enter a photo that was actually framed but to take a photo that was what is called framed photography.

The idea was to make a item in your photo framed by something else. Verna won by taking a photo that was a lamb framed by a house door. Russell was second with a tree that was framed either side by the “Y” of a york gum tree. Verna came third with a photo of a dog framed by a ute mirror.

It’s show time!

We have been busy sorting our photos to display in the Quairading Ag Show. I have been pestering people to enter in the photography section at the show. So make sure you budget a bit of your time to check out all the great photos on show day by all the other non photo club members as well as us professionals.

What about you showing off your own photos even if you’re not a photo club dude. Your photos have to be dropped off at the Quairading CRC prior to the show day for judging. Go to the Quairading CRC and ask for a show schedule, don’t forget the kiddys section.

At the show this year in the photography section which everybody can enter, all the portrait photos will be put together and there will be a People’s Choice voting box to decide the best portrait at the show for 2018. If you win, your photo and name will be put on our photo club trophy and displayed at “photo club corner” where all our photos are displayed in the Quairading Co-op window.

2019 Calendar We having been very busy getting our calendar ready for next year and it will be on sale in late November or December.

WARRIOR WELLBEING “Yoga—is it exercise?”

Yoga is best described as a traditional exercise and can have a positive influence on our physical, mental and social/spiritual wellbeing.

Yoga has been around for centuries in some form and in more recent times has undergone its own transformation by becoming a more mainstream exercise practice in western culture.

Research into Yoga shows there are many benefits and it helps people manage their stress, anxiety, depression and all the challenges that life may throw our way.

However, I want to briefly look at and outline the physical benefits of Yoga as an exercise. When we do any sort of movement (we do have to just get moving) the benefits are often overlooked by us blokes.

Yoga as exercise can be described as structured physical movements that get the body moving through a series of stretches. Some of these stretches include but are not limited to:  lumbar spinal stretches;  hip stretches;  hamstrings stretches;  core body work, including our pelvic floor;



balance routines/ stretches.

Yoga can be complimentary to whatever we choose as our main exercise routine, whether that be our regular sport, leisure like walking, running and/or swimming.

Yoga can also be a complete exercise regime on its own.

When we read the research around Yoga, it also has a multitude of benefits to aid in rehabilitation from major accidents and/or surgery.

Quite often the exercises we see elite athletes performing before and after their games (in particular football) are in fact Yoga based exercises.

Yoga has been summarized as preventative health around our body awareness, something as blokes we may lack an appreciation for. A lot of research and common literature tells us that there are many benefits to Yoga, particularly for men. The practise of Yoga can:  cause a reduction in cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, blood sugar levels, cholesterol and improves the levels of antioxidants in the blood;









improve male sexual function – Yoga appears to be an effective method of improving all domains of sexual function in men; improve incontinence – Yoga may lessen the side effects in men undergoing prostate cancer treatment. There is a body of work around the benefits in exercise for improving our pelvic floor and incontinence with or without prostate surgery; improve male reproductive health – Yoga has been identified as having a positive impact on male reproductive health and fertility; maintain and increase strength, tone and flexibility.

We all need to exercise more, and Yoga is another tool for us blokes to utilize, especially when we add in the advantages that is has for our man bits. Give it a go, you may enjoy it as well as gain some improvements to your overall wellbeing.

RURAL DANCE SCHOOLS WA: Quairading The end of year concert was held on Sunday 2nd of September, in front a wonderful crowd of family and friends. There were the fabulous small people who treated the audience to a great dose of sweetness, with ‘Beautiful Doll’, and a breezy ‘Summer Holiday’. The Jazz Group performed some snappy little moves to ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and grooved to ‘Footloose’. The Acro performers flipped and cartwheeled to ‘You Never Had A Friend Like Me’ (from Aladdin) and our beautiful ballet girls danced to ‘Somewhere Out There’. The tappers danced a fabulous number called ‘Little Devil’, and the Hip Hoppers jumped to ‘Yeah x 3’ by Chris Brown. Truly a great end to their dance year, it is always lovely to watch the children dress up and have fun on stage and showcase their skills. They just get better every year!

QUAIRADING BADMINTON CLUB We may be but little, but we be fierce!

An apt description of the badminton club this year! We managed to tick the boxes (eventually) on lodging our new constitution, host an amazing open day and have games running every week of the season. We have got a great blend of experienced players and newbies attending each week and it is amazing to see the improvements from our newbies towards the end of the season.

Encouragement for those that might like to play but are reluctant to take the plunge!

Our open day held way back in June was a great success and we had many players travel in from Beverley, Dowerin & York. The baddy ladies put on an amazing spread of foods and prizes for our guests and we even managed a home town winner this year. Congratulations to Carol Dall for her win in the A grade competition. Many thanks to RSM Bird Cameron and the Quairading Club who both sponsor the awards for this day.

QUAIRADING BOWLING CLUB Let the season begin!

The QBC has entered into the 2018-19 bowling season looking to bring some more success to our wonderful little club. The Red boys in First division will be all out to try and prevent losing their 11th GF in the last 14 years. It’s beginning to be a bit of a pain in the butt. The fact is we’re good enough to get there. It’s time to win. The Green and White teams will battle it out in second division and, with the inclusion of some new blood, they will also be pushing for the big one.

Our ladies are moving from the East Avon to the Avon League where they will be pitting themselves against teams from Beverley to Bolgart to Dowerin and all places in between. We wish them luck in their new venture. I’m sure they’ll acquit themselves well.

Salaams and salutations to Colin Hayes on being selected in the WA Over 60’s State side to play in South Australia in the coming weeks. Although we have seen a couple of local players reach Country All-Star status, Chook is our club’s first player to reach full state representation and it is magnificent effort on his behalf and a terrific honour for our club. Well done and the very best of luck Old Timer!

While on firsts. Chris Gimbel is our first lady to reach state honours when she was selected in the WA country All-star side last season. Well done to you as well Christine.

Sunday sees the opening of the season with the Solahart Mixed 3’s starting at 1pm. It promises to be a grand day so if you want, rattle a team together and get your names to Mick or Pam. And hurry!

There has been a bit of drama of late with one of the light towers plummeting onto the greens causing damage which will require major repairs to our bowling surface. Our shire has things in hand and as soon as we get the all clear from whoever we will be able to get our rinks back in working order.

Thank the bowling gods that Melons wasn’t up the pole changing the globes (as is his wont) or we might be changing Melons!

Last Wednesday the men held the annual Primaries Day or, as it has become known, Percy’s Day in memory of the late Gary Haythornthwaite. Thanks to our generous sponsors Primaries, CRT Quairading, North Quairading Contractors and Rod and Sarah Again, the best of luck to our men and Haythornthwaite. A wonderful turnout of 12 women as we head into this season. teams (48 blokes) from Perth and surrounding districts battled it out with the winners being the boys from DalkeithNedlands.
