This is the THREE HUNDRETH edition of our humble Banksia Bulletin, I think that calls for some champagne—and a little flick through the history books. From what I can gather by scouring through the archive files, the very first edition was initiated by the invaluably proactive Quairading Farmer’s Coop and published on site in May 1991; and much like a new born child, it was without a name for a little while. A “name the paper” competition was run and by edition 4, baby paper was titled Banksia Bulletin. Those early days had up to twelve people working on each edition (led by Jo Hayes, Belinda Toovey and Robyn Hinkley) cutting, arranging, gluing, copying, collating, stapling and delivering. Lots of the notices were hand written (or hand drawn!) and advertised goings on from all over town, just like it does today. While the look and production method may have changed over the years the point and the passion have not and it’s a pure privilege to compile every month (sure it can be painstaking at times, but a privilege none the less!). This month at the Quairading CRC: heaps of fun things to get involved in, as always. We’re hosting a Spring High Tea on Thursday 15th for WA Seniors Week 2018 (not to be confused with the Shire’s Seniors Christmas Luncheon, however we can take your names for both!). Plus we have two BeConnected webinars (more info on what that means on page 12). We’re also running a Christmas Card Exchange, see all the details on page 25 and get involved! Quick congrats to Tracey Patton on an expertly organised and very fun fundraising event held a couple of weeks back. Events are a massive undertaking and volunteering that time is an incredibly generous gesture; all for a very worthy cause of course! Check out the words from her on page 41 to see the grand total raised for Beyond Blue. Happy month-before-Christmas! QUAIRADING RAINMAKERS INC We have been busy, busy, busy since we last provided you with an update a few months ago. EL TORO Thank you to everyone who dropped in and visited the bull and artist, Jordan Sprigg on show day. We loved hearing your feedback and are absolutely thrilled with the response since. We are proud to announce to date our community has pledged $31,750! This is a huge achievement and we are totally overwhelmed with the town’s support and generosity.
Jordan has been kind enough to lend us El Toro for a little. Stay tuned to see the bull installed proudly in front of the town hall in the coming weeks. MURAL Along with Quairading Tourist & Tidy Towns we are working on securing grant funding to paint a large scale, bright mural on the Co-Op wall (overlooking the grassed area next to the pub). The feedback from grant funders so far has been we need to provide a clear picture of what we would paint! So, if you have any interesting ideas we would love to hear from you. CHRISTMAS CARDS We have created a series of Wheatbelt themed Christmas cards. They are the most amazing quality and we think the images are absolutely adorable (the bobtails sunbaking on the road might be our favourite). You can purchase the set of six cards and envelopes for $15 at the Quairading CRC, Quairading Book Post & Quairading Co-Op. The proceeds will go to Quairading Rainmakers Inc and all the exciting community development projects we are currently working on.
We have smashed our goal of raising $30,000 locally which means we can move onto securing the next source of our planned project funding- convincing the Shire they should invest! Want to help us with this step? We would love for any community member, group or business to write us a letter of support, whether they have pledged money or not. The Shire need to know the community as a whole believe installing El Toro in the main street will help our town capture tourist trade. GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk October proved just how variable spring weather can be. We had our first over 30 degree day followed by what could have quite easily been a cold winter’s day. Our gardens cope very well with the one off spikes in temperature. So in preparing for summer keep in mind that watering in the morning is best and watering the morning before a heat wave is forecast is also a good idea. If the hot weather is going to last more than three days in a row then you may need to water again especially if it’s a plant’s first summer. However, it is also useful to keep an eye on your plants because it’s not just heat that causes expiration, wind is also a factor, trees like avocados for example, struggle to pull up enough water for their leaves and so can look a little worse for wear in summer.
It’s time to ……
Plant of the Month Pimelea ferruginea, the pink rice flower, is a very forgiving plant. It tolerates most soil types, will flower in full sun or part shade, will cope with our cold winters and our baking hot summers and still put on a beautiful display of pink flowers against glossy green leaves from mid spring and into early summer. It has a natural rounded shape which can be maintained with a light trimming after flowering has finished. Slow release fertiliser applied at the end of winter will help the plant to flower and grow into the next year. Pimelea is low growing shrub and will fit in well into any garden style.
Sow – Nothing
Plant – Passionfruit can be planted now, they are gross feeders and some like to place a whole liver at the bottom of the planting hole, however, it’s best not to do this if you have a dog. If you haven’t already done so now is a great time to plant summer seedlings like tomatoes, capsicums, eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelons and rockmelons. If you’ve never tried growing Honey Dew melons I’d recommend you try; they are tougher than Rockmelons and much sweeter. Summer flowering perennials, Scaevola, Gaura and Osteopermum, to name but three can be planted now; although they must have extra care during the coming summer.
Harvest – Loquats are late this year and should be ready to harvest during November; broad beans are also later this year we have only started harvesting recently. Peas, snow peas and sugar snap peas are coming to an end soon. Sweet peas are starting to fade so don’t forget to pick some for a small vase before the hot weather knocks them off. Things to do – Continue feeding the flowering plants in the garden they are working hard to produce their flowers and so need a little extra love. Dead head roses after their first big flush and if you planted pots of colour for Christmas flowering pinching out their tops and apply liquid fertiliser regularly to ensure you have masses of flowers come the end of December. Marigolds are still flowering their heads off, so early November is a good time to make some Calendula Ointment for the scrapes and scratches that always happen in the garden. Become a member today! What could my last child possibly use from the Quairading Toy Library, when she has two previous childrens’ worth of toys at home?! Well I am surprised to say: A LOT. I had previously been a member and my commitment to be a member had fallen by the way side until I had to pick up some toys for the Kids Tent for the Quairading Ag Show. My 18 month old was enthralled, and so began the regular drop off and pick up of new Toy Library toys. Secretly my older children love a new toy too. You know how your kids play so well with other kids toys… well let me tell you, you can have that same affinity with a toy, in your very own home, as you can take a new toy home every second week. I can safely say that I will be a regular member of the Toy Library once again. Membership is very cheap at only $40 for an entire year. This will gain you access to thousands of dollars’ worth of toys, all stored at the Quairading CRC. The Shire of Quairading is putting out an expression of interest for people that want to volunteer to help with the girls grassroots netball team. Last year there was no interest in the event despite grant funding for new uniforms and the opportunity for the entire event to be funded including bus hire, lunch, registration and sporting equipment. We are hoping that this year the parties that helped facilitate in previous years or new persons present themselves to have this event once again go forward for our champion netballers.

FARMERS ACROSS BORDERS: HAY FROM WA We are a not-for-profit community organisation born in 2014 in Esperance, Western Australia. This year we are working in conjunction with 'Lions Need for Feed' an organisation that has great knowledge & relationship with regional areas in the Eastern States.

Farmers Across Borders’ main goal is to help farmers in the eastern states who have been affected by the droughts. The main way we can assist our farming neighbours, is by providing animal feed (hay) and moral support during this drought time. On Australia Day 2019, 50 road trains will make the trip. This time in conjunction with Lions, Need for Feed. All hay is set to be donated by generous West Aussie farmers, all eager to help their eastern state neighbours – still struggling in drought.

QTTTC Best Garden Display Winner The winner of the Tidy Towns ‘Best Garden Display’ was won by Mr Norman Marnham, who had Elizabeth’s roses looking beautiful! They were out in full bloom with a mixture of colour further back. Norm’s garden was very neat and tidy, well done Norm. There were many gardens around town worth looking at, Mick Grage, the newest garden in town, is very interesting; quite arty and picturesque. The Youth Centre is worth a drive by. The Retirement village and the Shire roses and gardens are all beautiful, which makes our town overall very attractive. RECIPE: LOADED BAKED SWEET POTATO Eating no meat one day a week is not only about subtracting from your diet, but adding to it (and you can support our livestock producing farmers the other 6 days of the week). Eating more whole grains, beans, lentils and vegetables on your meatless day offers many health benefits. Whole-grain, unprocessed carbohydrates — such as whole-wheat bread, whole-grain pasta, brown rice, oats, buckwheat, quinoa and millet — can help prevent heart disease, certain cancers and diabetes. Experimenting with a new grain choice on your next meatless day can provide fibre for normal bowel function, along with a variety of vitamins and minerals that contribute to the nutrient density of your diet. Adding beans or lentils to your meat-free meal maintains an adequate protein intake. Providing about 16 grams of protein per cup cooked, beans and lentils also are a great source of fibre, folate, iron and potassium. These nutrient-rich foods are good sources of manganese, magnesium, copper, and thiamine. INGREDIENTS 2 large sweet potatoes Butter/Ghee or oil Fillings 1 x Punnet Cherry tomatoes Fresh herbs of your choice (chives, parsley etc) 1 x Avocado 1 x Small tin of black beans 1 x Small tin of corn 1/2 x Red onion (chopped finely) Maple syrup (optional) 1 x cup cooked quinoa 200ml x Sour cream 1 x cup Baby spinach Ground coriander, cumin , salt and pepper. TOOLS Slow cooker/crock pot (optional) Alfoil METHOD Step 1: Wash potatoes (don’t dry) and prick them a few times with a fork. Step 2: Place on individual piece of alfoil and sprinkle with salt, pepper a little butter/ghee or oil and seal. Step 3: Either place them in a slow cooker on low for approx 8 hours (give or take depending on the size of the potatoes. Or you can do them quicker in the oven on high (180-200o) for approximately 1-1.5hrs. Step 4: While the potatoes are baking, mix sour cream with cumin and coriander (or what ever herbs and spices you prefer) and chop up, or drain, all of your desired fillings. Step 5: Remove potatoes from oven or crock pot and carefully open parcels. Cut and fill and if you like, cover with cheese and place under a grill. Or skip this step and crumble some fetta on top instead. You can easily make this a meat eating friendly dish by adding cooked mince or tuna. You can swap up the spices and toppings to create different versions; Mexican, Moroccan, Indian etc. or taking inspiration from the Q Pub a hangover potato with anything you have left over. PAGE 34

Loose Stitches Thanks to the Quairading CRC and the WA Association for Mental Health, Loose Stitches were lucky to be able to secure funding during Mental Awareness Week to host a workshop, facilitated by Jemima Flendt from Tied With a Ribbon. We had 8 ladies attend and they were treated to a Trunk Show of Jemima’s quilts and small projects and patterns and we were the very first people to have a sneak peek at her new book before she takes it to the Houston Quilt Market (Texas USA) to be launched (excuse the pun !!!!) Loosies is a place where women and men (always welcome) can come and have a chat, sew, share tips and always have a good belly laugh. Please note that we will be closed on Fri 23 Nov as we are off to Quilt Market in Melbourne!!

Noongar Cultural Corner A monthly article produced in collaboration with local Noongar representatives and Noongar cultural organisations.
Balladong Heritage Trail 2018 I had the privilege of attending the Balladong Heritage Trail on 22nd of September. The trail was headed by Mr David Collard. It started in Guildford and ended in a visit to Wave Rock, Hyden. It was a great opportunity to learn about the significance of Mt Stirling ,the legend of mulkas cave in Hyden and to see the spiritual connection to country. The group of around 30 camped two nights at the Quairading Caravan Park and I got to hear the many yarns around the camp fire. The food was terrific and the company was jovial. I hope this event can be an annual occurrence, it was well organised and executed. All in all a great addition to the community and a terrific opportuning to immerse oneself in Noongar culture. QDHS SIP Project Manager Report 19th October 2018 The staff at Quairading District High School have worked tirelessly over the past three months to collaboratively develop a School Improvement Plan that addresses the actions for improvements stated in the school review. Each of the three committees have drawn on their strengths and passions to form plans that are robust, sustainable and have momentum. The QSpirit Committee have developed a detailed plan to improve the image and reputation of the school. They will focus on strengthening partnerships with community subgroups and will be asking community members to provide feedback and suggestions in this area in the near future. The QSpirit committee have also blueprinted the steps the school is to take to ensure successful staff collaboration and authentic staff engagement. With the development of the QDHS Communication Policy and Procedures Framework, channels and modes of communication have been mapped out to ensure effective and timely exchanges between all key stakeholders. The Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework Committee attended the Quairading Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Committee Meeting held at the CRC on the 19th of September. Becoming a member of the RAP Committee was one of the immediate steps recommended in the school review. Attending this meeting gave the committee an insight into the aspirations of the local community and a step towards developing a partnership with this committee to improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal students. The ACSF Committee have also developed a plan to embed the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework that focuses on the strategies to move towards being a more culturally responsive school. Last week, the ACSF members met with Alison Ramm (Regional Executive Director, Wheatbelt Education Region), Paulina Motlop (Director Aboriginal Education Teaching and Learning) and Kevin O’Keefe (Principal Advisor, Aboriginal Education) to receive input and feedback on the ACSF Committee’s planning to date. This consultation proved to be very effective, and the school will be engaging Paulina and Kevin to run a professional learning session for all staff in week five of this term. The FutureQ committee’s plan details the processes required to ensure effective deployment of resources to suit our school context. This plan also includes strategies to ensure all decisions are made with strategic intent and school planning reflects current systemic and school student performance data. The FutureQ committee will conduct an audit to ensure all events throughout the year are timely, educational and align with school priorities. Finally, I would like to commend all staff who have significantly contributed time and effort to develop our School Improvement Plan. The school staff at Quairading are united in their commitment to continually improve the quality of teaching and learning along with improving the image and reputation of our school. QDHS AT THE QUAIRADING AG SHOW! During the last week of term three the students at Quairading District High School worked hard and tirelessly to enter show competitions and displays. In Art, with Miss Wilson, the students worked on entries for the “Trashion Parade”, where they designed pieces of clothing out of items that would usually be put in the trash. Selected students would then model them in the parade at the show. All the students played their part amazingly! The week consisted of many other art activities in both the Art room and classrooms. Every student showed great pride, grace, quality and respect when completing and displaying their works of art and thoroughly enjoyed the show! Here are three expert opinions from the Year 1 Class; On the holidays I went to the Quairading Show. I got three first prizes and a third prize. I went on the climbing wall. I got three Show Bags, one was totally girls and two lolly Show Bags. I also watched the Quick Shears, it was exciting. By: Emma, Year One On the holidays I went to the Quairading Show. I played the Duck Game and won a prize. It was a Princess. I ate some Popcorn. I was driving the Bumper cars and bumping into people and had lots of fun. I put the ball in the clown’s mouth. I bought a chocolate Show bag. By: La’Shar, Year One On the holidays I went to the Quairading Show. I went on the climbing wall and played Laser tag and I went on the Teacups. I saw Conway, Chloe, Emma and Nate. I also went on the Space ship, then I went back home. By: Klaniquah, Year One
Walking into the Agricultural Hall, it was wonderful to see all the fantastic work that the students had produced to be judged and also for display. There were first, second and third cards placed on many different pieces of work, including photography, cooking, craft and much more. The school’s Rooster won Champion in the Poultry Section. Some students paraded in the Trashion Parade and looked very creative. Looking around the show grounds you could see lots of students playing Laser tag, having a ride on Lil’ Louie, carrying lots of Show Bags and generally having a great time at the 98th annual Quairading Agricultural Show. Quairading District High School would like to thank everyone who made the 98th annual Quairading Agricultural Show possible. The students who went and participated enjoyed every moment and loved showing off their talents. Thank you to all the staff who also set up displays and made the students work possible. A special mention to Rebecca Wilson, Kelsie Squiers, Jane Johnston, Penny Johnston, Carolyn Davies and Abby Kerr for setting up and packing away the student displays. It was hard work but a proud day for all!

NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS 2018 From Quairading District High School NAIDOC Week is held in Australia each year to celebrate the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Quairading District High School joined the wider Quairading community in celebrating NAIDOC Week during Week 9 of Term 3 (10-13 September). We enjoyed a vibrant and lively school atmosphere from Monday to Thursday, with students, staff and community members participating in a week long agenda of activities and experiences. We joined the town in the annual Walk of Unity, before concluding the celebrations with an assembly dedicated to the 2019 theme: ‘Because of Her, We Can’.
On Monday, students revealed their artistic side while engaging in Aboriginal dot painting. The primary students designed their own bucket hat, while the older students worked on their posters for the art competition. PAGE 44
The hats were on show on Tuesday, when the whole school took part in a variety of traditional Indigenous games. Staff remained at a designated station, while each class rotated in twenty-minute intervals to ensure they had the chance to try every game. It was certainly a day of fun competition and it was great to see everybody having a go.
On Wednesday, students, staff and community members worked hard over stoves, ovens and coals to make sure we all had a delicious and filling lunch. The primary students made damper, the 5/6s made roo stew and the home economics students put together roo dogs. Mr Colbung sourced some kangaroo tails and cooked them over a firepit. All classes loved their visit to the fire and the opportunity to taste some wellcooked roo.

Garry Taylor presented our Art Competition winners – Kody Anderson and Shelby Faltyn with their prizes of beautiful competition boomerangs, donated by the Shire RAP Committee.
Our painted hats were visible again on Thursday, as we walked together as a whole school to the War Memorial. We listened to Marilyn Reidy and Raelene Taylor speak before taking part in Quairading’s Walk of Unity. Back at school, we held a short assembly to listen to our students speak about the NAIDOC theme, ‘Because of Her, We Can’. We heard pieces about inspiring Aboriginal women—mothers, aunties, sisters, sportspeople, poets and more. After lunch, our students attended talks from Ms Kellie Hansen and Mr Robert Hansen who spoke to us about their journey and in particular, firefighting from Robert! We had a whole school and community game on the oval organised by Daniel Marzocchi – Community Youth Coordinator.
The whole week was a positive celebration of Aboriginal cultures, histories and achievements. Quairading District High School acknowledges the need for and aspires to a culturally responsive school environment.

Quairading Memorial Swimming Pool makes a splash into waterwise program The Quairading Memorial Swimming Pool was endorsed as a Waterwise Aquatic Centre at the recent Leisure Institute of WA Aquatics (LIWA) State Conference. Since the Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program began in 2008 it has helped save around 858 million litres of water – in aquatic centre terms, that’s around 381 Olympic swimming pools of water. Water Corporation Goldfields and Agricultural Regional Manager, Sharon Broad, congratulated the Shire of Quairading run aquatic centre for doing its bit to use water wisely. “The Quairading Memorial Swimming Pool carried out extensive reviews of how it uses water and developed a management plan to achieve lasting water savings,” Mrs Broad said. “It made significant changes and ongoing commitments to using water wisely. It is fitted with water efficient toilets, taps and showers and regularly monitors its water use to keep an eye out for leaks. “Aquatic centres are an important part of our community, and the advice and support they receive through this program ensures every drop of water is used wisely.” Shire of Quairading CEO, Graeme Fardon, said the program formed part of Council’s stated commitment to sustainability, including the efficient use of water resources. “We look forward to working with LIWA and the Water Corporation to demonstrate this commitment. The Shire will continue on its journey of continuous improvement with its water use,” Mr Fardon said. The Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program is a joint initiative of Water Corporation and the Leisure Institute of WA Aquatics, with 38 Centres endorsed across the State. Quairading Memorial Swimming Pool brings the total number of Waterwise Aquatic Centres in the Goldfields and Agricultural Region to six – with the Goldfields Oasis (Kalgoorlie), Merredin District Olympic Pool, Mukinbudin Pioneer Memorial Aquatic Centre, Northam Swimming Pool and Wundowie Swimming Pool previously recognised through the program. PHOTO CLUB NEWS Written by Russell Stacey OCTOBER PHOTO COMP RESULTS Subjects: stairs or steps Gold: Janet Hall Silver: Alan Carter Bronze: Lyn Whyte Last month’s subject of steps and stairs was another interesting subject for our photo club. It was also interesting for the people who check out our display board, we get lots of feedback. Members got to show off their pics of steps and stairs from all over the world. Janet had pics entered that were shot in Canada. David had pics taken on a ship somewhere between Quairading and New York (not on Lake Mears). Lyn had pics taken in Ireland and France. Verna had pics from the Harvey Hotel and a shop at Waroona. LJ thought hard about taking a pic of a stairway to heaven (but not entered). I entered a blue painted step pic taken in Santorini (but it didn’t win so was a waste of paint). Pedro was flat out shearing sheep & driving the ambulance and again missed this month. Gene Stone who after winning first prize at the Quairading Ag Show, decided to give the other members a chance of winning a prize and did not enter a pic last month. Summary of the photography at the Quairading Ag Show.When working at Dad’s Bar on show night lots of people spoke about the 253 photos entered. Photos entered by locals were down a bit than last year, but with entries from new people Lori Foster (Ravenswood), Paul Fisher (Perth), Verna (Collie) Carine Newby (Beverley), Ron Black’s granddaughter, melly jelly (from France ) plus a couple of other people & Kati the berlin barmaid from 4 years ago who returned to Quairading recently and sent pics when she got home all the way from Germany. This made the numbers similar to the 2017 show With 8 pics entered by people from overseas we can now claim this competition to be of world standard and to win any prize in the photo section now has pretentious bragging rights. You asked for a bigger and better show this year; so how good is that!
One of the better pics entered in the show was our own member Gene Stone who I pestered to enter a pic he had taken of some old rusty drums and i got into the finals and won a first prize! Geney was seen at Dad’s Bar celebrating long into the night with a big smile on his face. I won best overall 6 x 4 print at the show and also won my own portrait trophy for the 2nd time. This was won by way of peoples choice voting and was a photo of Basil Winmar taken at Badjaling. The photo of Basil scored 18 out of the total of 50 votes. 2nd was the pic of Jessica Stacey with 10 votes. 3rd was the pic of Winnie McHenry with 9 votes. Our presidents daughter in law Marie Hall again won the major prize and got awarded the best overall photograph for the 2nd time and gets her name on the trophy back to back. Her winning photo of the beach, waves and sky was like last year taken on her mobile phone. The cameras in mobile phones are now actually pretty good with 12 megapixel camera in them. This supports what the photo club keeps promoting, that you don’t have to have a expensive camera to take a winning pic. You can get the job done with a mobile phone. So you can come along to our photo club and start off with pics taken on your mobile phone. If you want a low cost hobby, start taking pics sooner rather than later for next years show. Taking the pics is the easy stuff done, sorting lots of pics is what takes time. If you come to photo club at this stage of the year you can join free of charge till next year. QUAIRADING AQUATIC CLUB 2018/2019 Season Opener Thursday 1st November-Registration & light training at the pool 2018/2019 season fees-$110-need to paid prior to session (except new junior dolphins) PLEASE NOTE CHANGES TO THE WAY WE NEED TO REGISTER Current members will need to complete their registration & pay their fees via the portal link emailed to them from Swimming WA prior to registration day. For new members, Carol Dall will be at the pool with her laptop to walk you through the process. Please bring a means of paying for your membership online. Junior dolphins will kick off at 3.20 with a ‘have a go’ session The Junior dolphins program is targeted at kids from Pre-Primary to Year 3 who are very keen swimmers but not strong enough yet to swim a full lap. Junior dolphins will run on a Monday afternoon from 3:20 – 3:40pm (coaching) and Thursday afternoon (one-two lap races). During coaching children will be taught how to swim strokes (not swimming lessons). Each child will have to have an adult with them in the water at all times-this is not negotiable. During the initial ‘have a go’ session, it will be at the coaches discretion to decide whether the junior dolphins program will be a good fit for your child based on their skills and ability to follow instructions at a reasonable rate, thus allowing the coaching to progress in efficient manner. If the program is deemed suitable for your child, registration needs to be completed immediately after the first session.

QUAIRADING FOOTBALL CLUB The Sports Winter Ball which was held on Saturday 15 th Sept was a fantastic night and congrats to the COWS (Committee of Winter Sports – thanks Tom!!!) for the Hall décor it was wonderful. The night was full of celebrations, especially the Quairading Ladies Hockey Club with a back to back premiership. The Belles celebrated their season and award their players. The Bulls award winners are listed below.

The Club had their AGM on Thursday 11th October and are already planning for season 2019. The committee for 2019 season is: President - Lyall Brown Secretary - Robyn Richards Treasurer - Kelli Anne Brown Committee – Terry Andrews, Rohan Hadlow, Greg Hayes, Craig Anderson and Shaun Simpson Haydyn Richards retired after 3 years on the Committee, thanks Haydyn for your valuable input and time over the last 3 years. Lastly on a very sad note we lost one of our valued players recently, Mitch Delle Coste, our deepest sympathy go to the Delle Coste, Dawson and Haythornthwaite family’s.
