Fake tradies known as ‘bitumen bandits’ on the prowl for WA victims

• Travelling conmen approach WA consumers and businesses uninvited

• Reports so far received from Perth, Goldfields and Great Southern areas

• These fake tradies do a dodgy job, take the money and run

WA home and business owners are being warned to avoid dealing with a band of fake travelling tradies known as ‘bitumen bandits’ offering to re-surface driveways and car parks, but the standard of their work is extremely poor.

Four reports have so far been received concerning the group of men who are believed to be UK nationals, charging customers between $5,000 and $20,000.

They have travelled from Perth to the Goldfields and are now thought to be in the Esperance/ Great Southern area. In Perth, businesses in Cannington and Darlington were targeted.

The fake tradies are breaking consumer laws by approaching potential customers uninvited and failing to observe the required ten business day cooling off period.

Commissioner for Consumer Protection Trish Blake says the opening of borders post-COVID-19 has also now opened up opportunities for these travelling conmen to rip off consumers and businesses.

“These reports of fake tradies on the move are the first we have received in a number of years since borders closed during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ms Blake said.

“But now that borders are opened, the fake tradies are back in business and targeting home and business owners with their high pressure sales tactics and carrying out dodgy work at highlyinflated prices.

“Sometimes they tell potential customers that they have just finished a job nearby and have some bitumen left-over, so can offer them a good deal.

“Usually the materials being used are sub-standard and the surface is so thin it can’t support the weight of a vehicle. They will then take their victim’s money and quickly move on, making it difficult for their victims or authorities to catch up with them.

“Consumers looking to get bitumen work done should resist any approaches and sales pitches from these people. Instead, get multiple quotes from reputable tradespeople.

“These terrible tradies break door to door, or unsolicited consumer agreement laws, which give consumers the right to a ten business day cooling off period if they are approached uninvited. It is illegal to take money or carry out any work during this time.

“We urge home and business owners to be on alert and, if approached, send them on their way and contact Consumer Protection immediately to report their whereabouts.”

To report travelling fake tradies, call Consumer Protection on 1300 30 40 54 or email consumer@dmirs.wa.gov.au. Information such as descriptions of the offenders, vehicle registration numbers or business names used are useful.

Our photo competition subject for March was a PERSON AND A DRINK. This was a opportunity to practise our Portrait Photography, you just had to have the sitter holding or drinking a drink. Portrait Photography has always been a powerful medium for capturing & recording the essence of a person's personality and character. If you take a pic of your family or friends & include their favourite drink in the composure, you will have captured a portrait pic for your family memory album. These pics will also tell a story, that will evoke a memory in years to come. For this subject, my first thoughts were to replicate a image of a famous movie character holding a drink in their hand. I would replicate a pic like you see on the advertisement posters for movies & it would be a lot of fun getting your model to dress up like a movie star. The plan was that persons viewing your portrait pic, would comment, Hey! that’s a pic just like that film poster, just like, GATSBY with a Prohibition Whiskey, 007 with a Vesper Martini, MARILYN with bubbles of Dom Perignon or a classic black and white pic like BOGART with a French 75 in a Casablanca Gin Joint. With these ideas on board you can envisage some compelling pics to take for this subject of people you know personally. With so many different drinks & matching attire for your model to be dressed in, plus all the different angles you can take a portrait pic there was an infinity of photo ideas. When taking photos for a PERSON & A DRINK, this subject made us draw on everything we had been taught and also taught our self about Portrait Photography, add a drink and get the background behind the person correct to get a award winning pic. Pics in the competition ranged from sitters donning on makeup & a glitzy red dress pretending to be aristocratic, sipping a colourful cocktail in a fancy glass, to a simplistic pic by Jessica of Mr March Pinup, Nathan, in a true blue Aussie blue singlet sucking on a can of Jacks & pics by Cara of Scott drinking iced coffee & another pic of her kids drinking milk. We learnt doing these pics, that to get the face of the sitter and the drink focused at the same time, many pics had to be taken to get it right, which added to learning something more about Portrait Photography. I would like everybody next time you see someone drinking a drink, snap a candid pic, something akin to grandparents sipping their ritual morning cuppa tea or kids guzzling a milk shake and snap a pic for your memories album. Your pic will capture a great memory of a PERSON & THEIR FAVOURITE DRINK.

April competition the subject was LIQUID SPLASH, we had endless possibilities for capturing dynamic striking images. We had a lot of fun adjusting our camera settings, as we where doing high speed photography, that we all still learning to do. This subject was a combination of creative + high speed photography. A lot of the pics where a result of doing experiments of getting some type of liquid to do a splashy thingy. We then took pics of our experiments, we had to adjust things we where photographing until we finally got the perfect pic. Taking a pic of something like milk splashing into a glass, it was somewhat amusing that after taking many pics, the pic you liked the most was completely different than what you set out to achieve, however you convinced yourself that you had created a stunning image that captured the ultimate liquid splash pic just like a professional. It was really pleasing to see at the meeting that the standard of pics was of a very high standard. Some of the splash pics where taken in the ocean, with items added like surfers on surf boards, sitters getting splashed by waves & water splashing out of sitters flicking their hair. Back on land we had liquid splash pics by dropping a rock in a puddle of water, a glass of spilt milk splash, water being splashed out of a glass & water coming out of a hose. When we viewed the pics at our meeting, it was really difficult to choose which pic to vote for because we had many great pics. This lead onto making the voting at the meeting really interesting because we had to think hard about how to critique artwork. If your kids what something to do because they are bored, tell them to grab someone and go take some LIQUID SPLASH photos, it will keep them entertained, which is what our members discovered when we did this subject, it was so much fun. Google some ideas to photograph & techniques, your kids can do photography & create images that are both visually striking and technically impressive.

Anybody can join the Quairading Photo Club. We meet at 7pm once a month on the 2nd Tuesday at the Quairading CRC

Warrior Wellbeing Article

Stress is usually associated with not being in control of a situation or an environment leading us to feel uncomfortable in body and/or mind. It is a part of life and it affects everyone at one time or another. Stress is normal, a certain amount of stress energizes people consequently improving performance and efficiency.

When stress levels get too high, problems can develop and start to take their toll on our mental health, physical health and social/spiritual wellbeing, sometimes with dire consequences. At RMHI we refer to situational distress to explain those times in our lives that create extreme stress which can start from situations that are unresolved in our lives. If we are always saying things like I haven’t got enough time, I must get this done before…, I’ll never finish in time, I can’t get anything done; we might be in danger of moving from stressed to being distressed

It is important to remember that what might be stressful for some may not be stressful for others. We all deal with things differently and have different capacities to cope.

How do you currently cope with stress? Are your coping strategies healthy or unhealthy, helpful or unproductive? Many people cope with stress in ways that compound the problem. Below are unhealthy strategies that may temporarily reduce stress but will cause more damage in the long run:

• Sleeping too much;

• Filling up every minute of the day to avoid facing problems;

• Withdrawing from friends, family and activities;

• Taking out your stress on others (lashing out, anger outbursts, physical violence);

• Drinking too much; Procrastinating;

• Overeating or undereating;

• Over analysing;

• Smoking;

• Using pills/drugs to relax;

• Zoning out for hours in front of the television or the computer.

Here are some tips that may help deal with stressful situations:

• Avoid the stressor. Learn to say no, limit time with those who stress you out (if possible), control your environment i.e. turn the news off if it makes you anxious, give the bookwork to the bookkeeper.

• Alter the stressor. Communicate your concerns i.e. Talk to a Mate®, ask for a behaviour change but be willing to also compromise, be more assertive, manage your time better.

• Adapt to the stressor. If you can’t change the stressor, change yourself, look at the stressful situation more positively, will it matter in the long run? If the answer is no refocus elsewhere, set reasonable standards not perfectionism, look at all the good things in your life if feeling stressed out.

• Accept the stressor. Some stressors are unavoidable, in such cases accept things as they are. This can be difficult but easier than railing against an unchangeable situation.

Finding and creating ways to relax when you are stressed out will also help i.e. exercise, get a massage, listen to music to calm down and/or before it all gets too much Talk to a Mate®!! Most importantly if you feel you are not coping, despite your efforts to do so, we recommend a visit to your GP before you reach a crisis point.

Plough Monday

Catholic Church (St Francis Xavier)

Uniting Church

Having gone through Lent and learnt about the suffering of Jesus, we now come to a period of joy, Jesus has risen. I heard of a survey recently where over 50% of Christians said they didn’t believe in the resurrection, I wondered how could this be when it is part of our faith. The disciples found it hard to believe and the Gospel readings this month are stories of Jesus appearing to them in secret situations in order to prove that He had in fact Rison and once they accepted that their life’s changed. In the readings from Acts and the Epistles we see them calling for people to believe, to repent and follow Jesus. So what do we believe surely it is our great hope for a better life to come.
