COLOUR ME HAPPY Despite the grimaces captured here, over 70 local kids had an absolute hoot at the Quairading CRC’s Youth Week Colour Fun Run on Wednesday 13th April! From the Editor I can’t decide if back to back long weekends are the best or worst. The chance to take a holiday; wonderful. Having less days in the work week to get the same amount of work done; painful. A full five weeks until the next long weekend; almost far too long to wait! (Don’t come for me if you know that I don’t even work Mondays anyway, they’re not the same as public holidays!).

I hope you’re well tuned into the local Passion Sheet and have read that we have HEAPS of free RATs (Rapid Antigen Tests) and face masks here at the CRC to distribute to all of you for free! The State Government sent us a casual 1500 RATs and 3000 masks. Please pop into the CRC and collect some. We’re going for a x5 RATs per household limit to help make sure we can spread them across the community, but if you’re a big family or have extra need, we’re very flexible to provide you with more. The face masks this time round are reusable and surprisingly decent. While we welcome the news that face masks are no longer required in many indoor settings as of Friday, we reckon it’d be pretty sensible to still keep a stock up your sleeve—so come on in and please take some of the 3000 off our hands!

We’ve got just a couple of events happening at the CRC in May. Next week we’re hosting a “Starting a Business Workshop” with RSM Business Local (get online and register your spot by Monday if you’re keen, all info on page 15). We then have the return of Story Time for Term 2 on Monday 9th May, this time with a special local story book reader! Let your friends and families with little ones know about this free and fun event packed full of rhymes, songs, stories and more. See page 19 for the flyer.

We hear our local Caravan Park has been cranking since the new caretakers Marg & Noel started earlier this year. Big welcome to the Jayco Owners Club of WA who were visiting from 26th—30th April and the Old Farts & Young at Hearts (their words not mine, promise) here in midMay—plus so many other individuals, families and groups travelling through the regions. Now that the weather isn’t stinking hot and some patches are starting to green up, take inspo from our visitors and get out there to enjoy some of our local attractions. I heard about ANOTHER born and bred local who visited Toapin Weir for the very first time last weekend.

I shall omit their name to save the public embarrassment, but the crux of the story is that they loved it! The rock, the water, the view—it really still is an incredibly underrated gem. Go prove me wrong.

Well another month has flown by. The season is changing and so is our stock so do pop in and have a look. We have a fantastic range of gifts and wares suitable for Mother’s Day which is just around the corner. If you are stuck for an idea I have vouchers or I can put together a package for you! Consider a piece of local art – many pieces to choose from with prices starting from $6! If you can’t get into the store in person, give me a buzz on 0400 085 235 and I can help you with a gift selection. We do gift wrapping also!

On the 6th and 7th of May, I am teaming up with Jo and Jade from the Quairading Hotel as well as Wendy from Flavour Town Catering to host a writers group. I am excited to welcome visitors from down south and the city for a weekend of creativity and sharing our town with them.

I am thrilled that we are now stocking the amazing work of Suzannah Edwards - it is simply exquisite and needs to be seen in person to appreciate the workmanship and detail. We are so, so lucky to have such a talent.

Another welcome addition to our maker’s stable is Cassie from BushWicks.

Originally from Quairading (Cassie Stone) and now farming and teaching in Wylie, Cassie creates beautiful candles and room diffusers that we now stock.

They need to be smelt to be believed!

Claire Buckley is our window artist this month. Claire is multitalented artist from Pingelly. She creates line drawings in both pen and pencil; amongst other things. Her work is has been very popular paired with our baby/kids range.

Congratulations to three of my wonderful makers Narelle, Charlie and Marlene on a really successful showing at the annual Beverley Art Prize. It was a fantastic exhibition and I was so proud to see their work, as I am to stock them.

Do you enjoy acting? Role play? Theatre skills? We are seeking expressions of interest about starting a possible theatre skills group. This would be a fun relaxed group that would meet once a month for script reading, acting and theatre games. Pop in and let me know or you can also let Brittany Hadlow know. We are gauging interest at this stage.

Thank you for your patience whilst I’m painting and rejigging the shop a little; I really want to make the art work POP so a colour change was necessary.

Co lour me happy!

Time and time again when we ask the young people of Quairading what fun activities they think we should organise—they say “Colour Run!” and a few cheeky munchkins often say “just the colour, not the run”.

Taking all opinions into consideration, a perfect funding opportunity came around and after submitting a quick grant application before Christmas last year we waited patiently and finally received word our funding had been approved for a local Colour “Fun” Run! Like any good obstacle course, we had a few hurdles—like only being approved for half the dollar amount we asked for, and only having three weeks to get the event organised and delivered! Luckily, we’re seasoned professionals, and the postal service wasn’t experiencing any major delays!

Many colour runs include a decent length of running track, with people throwing handfuls or cupfuls of coloured powder (usually cornflour and food dye) at the passing runners. We wanted to keep our track cosy and bulk it up with some extra activities and learning opportunities—and we’re glad we did! Our track included activities such as thinking about and writing something you’re good at on the board (an exercise in positive self image!) and coming up with ideas for reducing, reusing or recycling commonly used items (an exercise in environment sustainability!).

We ended the fun run with a big group colour explosion with all 70+ kids taking handfuls of powder and throwing in the air at the same time—believe you me, coordinating this was the hardest part of all. They nailed it though and we were stoked to have Geoff Hall’s photography skills present on the day to capture the moment—thanks Geoff!

2022 An zac Day Addre ss del ive red by Hon Martin Aldridge MLC I wish to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we meet, and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture.

As we all gather here this morning, I welcome our returned service men and women, distinguished guests, community representatives and service groups. To all of our Australian Defence Force service men and women currently deployed around the world, their families and friends, I extend my gratitude for your continued service and dedication. I recognise the response of the ADF in support of regional communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Seroja – soldiers from the 13th Brigade, the Pilbara Regiment and the 37th squadron unit who supported the response and recovery from this natural disaster and more recently the tragic floods impacting NSW and Queensland.

For those here today, thank you for welcoming me to Quairading to share my thoughts on a day so important to Australia’s history and story. We are very fortunate to have our ANZAC Day proceedings go ahead this year as COVID19 continues to spread among our community. Today is a special day where we stand together as a nation to give thanks and reflect on those who selflessly gave their lives for our flag and country.

We pause to acknowledge all current and former members of our defence forces – the brave men and women who fought for the freedom of our nation. They suffered, and their families suffered, so we could live and thrive in a peaceful prosperous nation.

I also wish to recognise the 100 years of the RAAF, celebrating the centenary of the Royal Australian Air Force that was marked on 31 March 2021. Formed in 1921, the RAAF has grown from humble beginnings to a world-class force helping to battle conflict and maintain peace for the safety of all Australians.

I would also like to take this opportunity to observe the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Navy’s 120th anniversary which occurred on 1 March 2021.

This year also marks 75 years of Australian participation in international peacekeeping operations. We thank all servicemen and women past and present for their loyalty in service.

a main base camp. Towards the end of the war, the airfield was used as an operational base for heavy bombers to assist the campaign against the Japanese occupied Netherlands East Indies. Today, some of that historic land houses the Western Australian College of Agriculture Cunderdin. Australia’s war history is well entrenched in its regional areas, and here in the Central Wheatbelt we stand on the memories and experiences of many before us who served Australia selflessly.

In 1993, Paul de Pierres OAM, a former National Serviceman and farmer from Wyalkatchem wrote a book titled “Wheatbelt Warriors”. He encapsulates the story of the 15th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps which was raised during the dark days of World War II when the threat of Japanese invasion was feared. With the help of Mr de Pierres, I’d like to share some stories noted in his book that paints a poignant picture of the Central Wheatbelt’s contribution to Australia’s defence.

Almost 700 men from the Central Wheatbelt, mainly farmers and countryfolk, trained for long hours to be a part of the defence service. Thankfully they never had to participate in war, but their willingness to defend our country deserves acknowledgement.

On 26 June 1940, a unit of the original R.S.L Volunteer Defence Corps was formed in Merredin. Training commenced at once with the aid of the local troop of the 25th Light Horse. Each Sunday members of the R.S.L from Merredin, Nukarni and Burracoppin paraded at the Show Ground. The veterans refreshed their old military knowledge and started to absorb much that was new. Enthusiasm ran high, funds were collected and soon each man donned khaki uniform.

Around the same time on 22 June 1940, 120 men also commenced training in Wyalkatchem. Some 50 of these men soon entered the forces. All centres in the Wheatbelt by now had men doing voluntary military training with wellattended parades.

In September 1941 the creation of the 15th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps was announced with its headquarters at Merredin. This marked the Battalion as an official unit in the defence forces of the Australian Commonwealth.

Today, it is a great honour to be here in the Central Wheatbelt to deliver an address, a region which played an important role in the defence efforts of Australia in World War II. Merredin was home to an Army Field Hospital, and today, its remains can be viewed in native bushland adjacent to the Merredin Peak. There were also many RAAF installations, and Nungarin had a large Army Ordnance Depot based near the town which held bulk and technical stores including radar and radio spares. RAAF personnel lived in houses nearby where camouflage was chosen in the form of vegetable gardens and flower beds.

On 7 December 1941 the significance of being able to defend Australia became paramount when Japan viciously attacked the United States fleet at Pearl Harbour and embarked on an expansionary war in southeast Asia.

The following year in 1942 the very real threat of the Japanese invasion drove the 15th Battalion to significantly increase its training. And although training was a focus, it is important to note that members also continued to contribute heavily to the general war effort across the country with their individual ongoing jobs. All members completed formal attestation and medical examination in March and April 1942 and received regimental numbers.

Towards the end of 1942, the Battalion reached a good standard of readiness and efficiency to answer the call of defence. The cooperation of the RAAF and Army units in the area, including the Cunderdin airfield and Merredin Army Field Hospital, had also helped to achieve this standard. The unit had a total of 117 vehicles available at short notice, which was enough to shift over 1200 men plus 10 horses and 4 wagons. Towards the end of the war, the Battalion had a successful run of marches and demonstrations and continued to provide support for the community.

These factual events and descriptions tell the meaningful story of true ANZAC spirit that was clearly resilient in the Central Wheatbelt during World War II. They possessed an enormous desire to do their duty for their country.

They made the commitment and got on with the job with energy and initiative.

They took great pride in Australia and for our freedom.

I refer to an excerpt in this book which depicts the sheer selflessness of our Central Wheatbelt defence corps:

ANZACs continually showed this sense of humanity and compassion.

In closing, I’d like to share a poem by writer and journalist JHM Abbott entitled the Soul of Australia: In the light of dawn, the break of day, Through the waters chill they fought their way; Like their sires of old, to the Motherland They came o’er the sea, and they sprang to the strand; And the blood of the Angles, the Scot, and the Celt Grew hot in their veins as the war fire they felt.

In the light of noon, in the bright sunlight, They fought up the cliffs from height to height; And the sun shone down on that scene of strife Where the ‘Soul of Australia’ came to life, As the blood of Australians was shed on the sod, For Australia, for Britain, Humanity, God. Shall Australia mourn for the sons she has lostShould Australians weep? Nay! Great though the cost, Joy mingles with grief, and pride mingles with pain, For our boys died like heroes, and died not in vain.

And the ‘Soul of Australia’, new-born on that day When her sons died at ANZAC, shall never decay.

Lest we forget.

Every man who wears the Volunteer Defence Corps uniform is doing a big job in defence of his country. For the effect of such a strong well-trained force helps to hold the moral of the community high. These men are doing the job of maintaining essential industries and giving freely of what little time they have for their families to further service for their country.

To those who served, gave their lives, suffered injury, or returned home as damaged souls – Thank you.

As a first generation Australian I do not have a family legacy to reflect upon. My Great Grandfather, Mr James Ralph Windsor Collett was a Member of Parliament of the then Malaya when captured by the Japanese following the fall of Singapore. He was interned by the Japanese initially in the infamous Changi camp and later Sime camp in Singapore.

During his time of internment he acted as a negotiator and translator between the Japanese captors and the captured servicemen. I knew him for a brief time in my childhood, and he never spoke of his experience. It was not until later in life and following his passing that I learned of his survival from the war and several years as a POW. His wife, my great grandmother, a nurse, was lost at sea after being evacuated from Singapore aboard a Red Cross ship which was torpedoed with all souls lost.

I am joined here this morning by my seven-year-old daughter Piper. Piper is wearing the medal awarded to her Great Great Grandfather for services rendered during World War 2 by King George VI. Today, we remember all those who made personal sacrifices for the freedom and quality of life that we enjoy today. The spirit of ANZAC is as relevant today to all of us as it was all those years ago. In deed the shocking stories, the vision, the casualties of the conflict in Europe currently remind us of what was fought for all those years before. We need to be vigilant that our society remains one that values freedom, tolerance and a fair go for all. We need to maintain their sense of commitment, courage and perseverance to get through the tough times, together. The need for us all to look after each other is probably greater now than at any other time in the past and PAGE 27

Quairad ing Ten nis Cl ub New s Yet another year has gone by and another tennis season comes to an end. A big congratulations to the committee and most especially Grant, for doing everything in his power to try and keep the club functioning. We started the season playing Thursday evenings, providing a bit of food, and the numbers were pretty decent until harvest came upon us. During harvest we went into dormancy and found it a bit hard to get things up and running again, not helped by Covid scares and the cancellation of some events that were planned due to one thing or another.

For the first time since the inception of the East Avon Pennant Association, 2021/22 season did not go ahead with any teams. In recent years we’ve seen the competition drop back from 12 teams (A and B grade) to not so long ago, 7 teams in one grade, to this year having none. This is unfortunately a sign of the times of tennis in the Wheatbelt and maybe all I can put it down to is the fact that we live so close to Perth and many of us are heading down to see children at boarding school on the weekends or planning other outings and many are now working through the weekend, when in the past, weekends were reserved for sport, no matter what.

Other zones seem to be still going strong with tennis and pennants bit it will take a big effort to turn it around in our zone.

February/March saw us move social tennis back to Sunday afternoons and have anywhere between 2—4 courts going. It was terrific to see some new young families come along. It’s certainly been a while since we’ve seen little kids roaming around and taking to the fort and we hope that they enjoyed their time out and will be back next season. It’s so good to have those fresh, new faces around.

March also saw us host our annual Men’s and Ladies Open Day, which with borders open and Covid around and about, we were super fortunate to run. We had 14 pairs of ladies in the women’s draw and 12 pairs in the men's, coming from as far and wide as Hyden, Narembeen, Dowerin, Perth, Northam, Mundaring, Beverley and Cunderdin. Some great tennis was played, sensational food had as well as lots of friendly chat and banter. Our closing day was held on Sunday March 27th and as always in memory of Neil “Matchy’ Richards, Grant pulled out the tubs of dress ups that Match had acquired over the years and we all had to don an item each time we hit the courts. Some great looks were had. Luckily for us, it wasn’t too hot!

Something very exciting also happened on our closing day at the Quairading Tennis Club. Three of us were awarded Life Membership. To say that we were all a little shocked and humbled is an understatement. The following is a brief dossier on each of our newest Life Membership recipients.

JO HAYES— Held position of Secretary for 2 years, 1995/96—1996/97. Jo took on the Junior CoOrdinator position with Michael Longford in 2002/03 and continued this role on by herself into 03/04 and with Di Wallwork in 04/05, also providing great support to Kelli when she was Junior CoOrdinator. Jo was Wednesday Ladies Captain in the 2007/08 season. Bar manager in 2009/10— 2010/11 as well as being Vice President in 2010/11 and starting her reign as Treasurer also in 2010/11. Jo held this Treasurer’s position from 2010 up until the 2017/18 season. She also has held the bar manager’s position, ladies committee person and catering position. Jo has been an integral part of our tennis club representing us not only on social days but also at very many open days around the zone and has also been seen on the courts playing for Quairading in EATA pennants.

KELLI BROWN—Held position of Secretary for 4 years, 1999/00—2002/03 and then again from 2018/19— current. Was Junior Co-Ordinator for 7 years from 2006/07—2012/13 and in a duel role in 2013/14 –2014/15 and then again in 2018/19, organising and taking coaching, junior pennants and junior tournaments. This lead into Zone 3 roles, taking on inaugural portfolio positions, the role of Zone Squad Co-Ordinator and Zone 3. Chairperson from 2013. Kelli also held the position of EATA Secretary for 2 years when Quairading held the books. Kelli was President of the QTC for 4 years from 2011/12—2014/15 and Ladies Champion in 2003/04, 2012/13 and 2013/14. Since marrying Lyall in 1996, she has been a member of the pennant team, only having time off for babies, being pennant captain for many of those years and has been a big supporter of local and surrounding town open days. More recently, Kelli has taken on Catering co-ordinator of our open days and is a big advocate for our club.

LYALL BROWN—Brought up on the Quairading Tennis Courts, Lyall started his tennis career as a junior, participating in all things junior tennis and travelling far and wide to get the best possible tennis he could. He started playing pennants for the QTC at the age of 16 by challenging his way into the B Grade team. By 19 he had challenged his way into the A Grade side, eventually challenging his dad to take the top spot and his first championship singles title in 1994 at 20. He has from what we can recall, only missed maybe half a season of pennants in all the years due to a dodgy ankle! Quite a remarkable accomplishment. From winning his first singles title, he has retained this title, missing only one year in 2009 when he was away and more currently when numbers have not been enough to run the event. Lyall played Country Week tennis representing the Zone from the age of 12 in the juniors and continued this into the senior events. As with Pennants, Country Week was a passion , and a must do every January for many years.

Lyall also represented Quairading at a few Shell Coaching Clinics and other participant selected clinics held in Perth over the years. As well as being Men’s Club Champion for 20+ years, he was elected onto committee in 1991 as Men’s Junior Vice Captain, then in 1999 as Men’s Vice Captain and 2000/01, 01/02 and then again in 04/05 as Men’s Captain. He has also held the position of President of the QTC for 3 years from 2008 and has been the Men’s Committee person for the last 3 years. He helped with junior coaching when Kelli was Junior Co-Ordinator and has been to too many busy bees to mention!

Quairad ing Go lf Cl ub It’s been a very sad time for the Golf Club with the passing of three past and present members.

Our deepest sympathy to Sue, Brian, Ray and families on the passing of their Dad Robin Comley, a past valued member of our Club.

Heartfelt sympathy to Deidre, Vanessa, Lorne and families on their recent loss of Alan (Scrubby) Edwards. Scrubby was a keen golfer and member who held several office positions during his career.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Graeme Wood. Sympathy to Denise and family on your very sad loss. Graeme came to our club later in his career but was a very valued member and volunteer.

Results from last Saturday monthly mug Winner- Cam Fraser 40 points R/up - Keith Johnson 38 points Nice to see some new golfers up there and a few old faces for the first time this year as well. Next weekend is the Colonel Cup and this will be on SUNDAY. Be really good to see some more golfers up there, the more the merrier for a good social day out. Names in by 12 see ya there.

The Bel Canto Choir is singing on Tuesdays at 9:30am at the Quairading CRC. This year is our 27th year. We are currently looking for a musician. We aren’t fussy, we just like to sing.

May 7, 2022: Wor ld Laby rin th Day What is a labyrinth? How will it help me? How do I walk it?

Walking a labyrinth provides an opportunity to step aside from the ordinary pressures and stresses that you face and to enter into contemplation or relaxation in which your body, mind and spirit can be engaged. It requires as little as 10 minutes to walk a labyrinth. You can walk it in less time, but taking longer and walking at a relaxed pace is recommended.

The labyrinth provides an opportunity to withdraw from the things that occupy your mind, or it may be used to help you reflect deeply upon those things, or to working on resolving problems and issues.

A labyrinth is a single path that leads to a central space and back out again. It is different to a maze in that there is one path and you can’t get lost. Labyrinths have been used in many cultural, religious & medical settings as an aid to meditation, prayer, reflection or rehabilitation.

Pause at the entrance to the labyrinth and breathe deeply.

Enter the labyrinth and follow the path.

Walk at the pace that is most comfortable for you. Walk quietly.

It is OK to overtake or pass people on the labyrinth. Simply step around the other person. In this COVID-19 isolation time, please mind social distancing.

When you reach the centre, stay as long as you need to. When you have are ready to leave, simply follow the same path back out again.

Before stepping over the threshold to leave the labyrinth. Pause again and take another deep breath.

When you leave the labyrinth, you might like to just wait quietly for a little while and reflect on what you have become aware of during your walk.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm Well March finished well and April kept its promise with early showers, however, we then moved right back into early autumn mode and the rain stopped and the warmer than average daytime temperatures started again and are continuing at the time of writing. There is a small glimmer of hope for the last week of April but again we’ll wait and see.

The forecast for May is warmer and dryer than average so perhaps we shouldn’t put our hoses away just yet. The QGLG welcomed more new members during March. We now have 30 members and on the 4th May we are celebrating reaching this number by visiting the Melville Rose Garden Nursery. We have a bus leaving from the parking area at the Shire Offices at 8am, please be on board by 8:45. See Donna at the Quairading Nursery to pay and reserve a seat, there are a few places left as of the middle of April.

Plant of the Month – Virginia Creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, is a deciduous vine from North America which in our climate produces brilliant autumn colour of reds and yellows. It is extremely easy to grow and will cover a huge wall in just a few years. Its tendrils do need help to attach themselves especially in windy sites, however, with a little help (we have stretched thin fishing line across the wall) it soon uses its aerial roots to adhere to any walls or fences.

The weight of a large Virginia Creeper can damage a weak structure so be aware of this when choosing a place to plant it. In early summer it produces inconspicuous flowers which the bees love. They turn into round ball-like fruits, which persist on the vine and add interest. You can cut these off on the lower branches if you have children, as they are highly toxic. Birds will enjoy them if you leave them on the vine. It is a most forgiving plant which grows in any soil, needs little water once established, grows in full sun or full shade although for best autumn colour it likes to be in full sun, ours is facing north. It loves our winters and relishes a frost or three! In winter, when it has lost its leaves is the best time to give it a trim taking off any dead, diseased or encroaching branches. It is easily grown from cuttings struck in early summer in a moist mix of potting mix and perlite which should be kept out of the direct sun in a well lit area, you should see roots in about ten weeks. When choosing plants it is important to think about how they impact their environment. As I mentioned our Virginia Creeper is on a north facing wall so in summer the ambient heat is kept off the wall so the vine helps to keep the house cool while in winter when the creeper has lost its leaves the winter sun warms the wall and helps to warm our house.

Therefore, our Virginia Creeper is not only aesthetic but is also functional.

It’s time to Sow – because of the extended warm weather there is still time to sow all the peas, broad beans, and other spring flowering plants and bulbs.

Plant – all flowering plant seedlings and winter herbs and vegetables can still be planted up until daytime temperatures drop. As soon as we have a good rain event of over 20mm all the native trees and shrubs should be planted to give them time to develop a good root system over the following months.

Harvest – we have just finished harvesting our pears, most of the grapes have been picked and either eaten or dehydrated and made into sultanas. Over the next month we will finish picking the apples. Before the next big rain we will harvest our sweet potatoes because they tend to rot in heavy soils like ours. In late May Kalamata olives will be dark and ripe enough to be picked and brined or dried to preserve them. This coming week we will harvest the first of the winter vegetables, the Boc Choi or Chinese greens which were planted in late March. We are still harvesting Snake beans and the Dwarf Green beans have just started.

There are also still tomatoes, capsicums, lettuce, chillies and carrots in the garden.

Things to do – spend time preparing beds for winter rose planting add gypsum to heavy clay soils and compost to add soil microbes, prune fig trees, spray stone fruit trees with copper at leaf drop, clean up around the garden any fallen fruit, dead or diseased plants that didn’t make it through the summer, collect autumn leaves for the compost bin they are full of nutrients and compost down really well, feed autumn flowering plants like Azalea and Camellias, divide rhizome plants such as Bearded Iris and Agapanthus, take cuttings from sweet potato plants because they grow from rooted slips, take Conifer cuttings with a small piece of the old wood called a heel, finish pruning Hydrangea flower heads, save seeds from your favourite tomatoes and capsicums, if your orchids have been in the shade over summer they can now be moved into a sunny spot where they get morning sun and if that’s not enough to do over the next month the rain does bring the first weeds of the season and they need to be hoed before they get too big.

The last word – Your mind is a garden. Your thoughts are the seeds. You can grow flowers or you can grow weeds.

T hai St yl e Spicy Pum pkin Soup The winter is coming and pumpkin soup will be on the menu. This inexpensive squash is often overlooked because without a good recipe it can cloy the mouth and taste rather meh! Well, let’s bring some cheer and taste to the humble pumpkin with this quick and easy creamy spicy Thai style recipe.

Ingredients 375 ml coconut milk 2 tsp cornflour 3 tbs red Thai curry paste 2 tbs fish sauce 1 kg pumpkin chopped seeds removed skin off 1 onion chopped 250 g potato chopped peeled 250 g sweet potato chopped peeled 500ml vegetable stock 2 tbs fresh coriander chopped Method 1. Set slow cooker to low. Combine milk and cornflour until smooth.

2. Add to slow cooker with all other ingredients except coriander.

3. Cook on low for 6–8 hours.

4. Before serving use a potato masher to break up pumpkin until creamy.

New s from the Bull Pen After what seemed like yesterday that our hearts were broken in a crashing double defeat in the 2021 Grand Final, we were back out on the field on Saturday 2nd April. With coaches Ryan Powell and Paul Dilena once again at the helm and the boys all looking as good as ever, we were out on the ground against what was unfortunately, a COVID ravaged Beverley team. With the Reserves game resembling a game of Nippers where Quairading players were having to don the Redbacks guernsey so that they could fill a side, the boys took full advantage of this and came away very convincing winners. Numbers were that scarce that our very beloved Nigel Gelmi threw on a guernsey and played a full 4 quarters—for Beverley! Was tear jerking seeing that man playing footy again.

The league boys then came out and obviously took a little while to wake up and get the feel for the new players as Beverley were 19 points up at quarter time. Whatever Dilly said at the break sure got them jumping because they kicked 6 goals to 2 and this continued on into the second half with the Bulls kicking 8.5 to Beverley’s 2.2. Round 2 saw us head across to Cunderdin for a highly anticipated Grand Final rematch for the league boys. Although also depleted by COVID isolations, the Magpies had a lot of youth to draw upon. Very handy that it was holidays and many young boys were home. They had to borrow orange shorts left, right and centre because there were so many of the little buggers. Youth, fitness and pace certainly proved a very effective combination and our boys just could not keep up and ran out of legs.

Their 5.4 to our 2 behinds in the final quarter was very telling and the Bulls going down by 38 points in the end. 14.9 93 to 8.7 55.

The league boys, determined not to make the same mistake as the previous week, came out hot, going up by 3 goals at the first bell. Except for a little lull in the 3rd quarter where they were beaten by 2 goals, they kept the foot on the pedal and came away 22 point winners. 14.12 96 to 11.8 74.

Reserves bounce down at 12:15pm and League at 2:15pm. The Belles will also be hoping to notch up their second win against Beverley so come along and have a squizz and cheer on the Bulls and Belles.

• Sunday 8th May—Mother’s Day and a home game for us verses Railways. Keep an eye open for canteen rosters and helpers needed. The Belles Thermomix Raffle will be drawn this day too, get in touch with any of the Belles to snag a ticket!

• Sunday 15th May—also a home game for us verses Federals. Again, canteen workers, cooks and helpers all needed.

• Saturday 21st May— off to the Tammin Oval for a hit out against Keller/Tammin. A Saturday game is always good to hang around and enjoy a few quiet ones and a laugh. Hopefully the grass is green, the wind is calm and the dust isn’t blowing from the paddock.

• Sunday 29th May—another home game. This time against York. Big things for the women are planned for this day. Full on Ladies Day, dress up, be waited on, enjoy the bubbly. Workers still required for canteen but then it’s sit back and enjoy. Keep an eye out for details.

Warrior Wellbe ing No Pain, No Gain?

When I think back to my younger years of intense physical activity, I can still hear the piercing scream of my gruff footy coach … “push through the pain barrier” and my favorite “get some bloody mongrel in you!!” To push through those grueling pre-season training sessions of hill sprints, gut runs, and burpees, you needed some encouragement.

Let’s face it, when you feel like your lungs are about to explode and a spew is only minutes away, both your mind and body is telling you one thing… stop!

I think a lot of us would agree that motivational quotes can help us get through some challenging times in our life that cause pain, in a physical, mental, or social/spiritual context. To grow stronger in a physical or mental context, suffering is sometimes the price we pay to gain something we want.

There is often the common belief that greater value and reward exists for those who put in the effort, work hard, and endure some pain… let’s face it life was never meant to be easy.

Pain is a word we regularly use at RMHI and we often come across people with various levels of physical pain and/or emotional pain (brought on by various situational distressors).

While pain is uncomfortable and unpleasant, it is usually there to tell us something is wrong.

Ironically, the initial stages of pain protect us from further injury by initiating a reaction to protect what has been damaged. Pain can go from being a small nuisance which makes us irritable, all the way to full on, debilitating or chronic pain. This persistent or chronic pain can even involve the pain system becoming overprotective resulting in pain sensations being present even when the body tissues are safe or our injury/illness has healed. Pain is different for everyone but here are some basic tips we should all use to manage it:

Getting a correct diagnosis in a timely manner: Booking in with a GP (to get a referral), physio, or psychologist (when it comes to emotional pain) can help pinpoint the cause of our pain.

Keeping active: This is a tough one because when we are in pain it can sometimes be hard to get moving.

Adapted exercise and movements can be prescribed by a physio; just getting outdoors boosts endorphins which can improve mood and block pain signals.

Pain medication: Some of us can be hesitant to take stronger pain relief because it can affect our ability to function normally and operate heavy machinery. But medication can be the key to reducing inflammation and pain which helps us to get moving and regain our function quicker.

Assess our diet: Certain foods and excessive alcohol use can contribute to inflammation and weight gain, especially when we are not moving as much as we normally would.

Alternative treatments and relaxation: Things like massage, acupuncture, meditation, listening to music and even the use of ice and heat can be a good starting point. Finding ways to relax is vital.

While I have always been one for getting out, enjoying life, and taking a few risks, I now understand those words of warning from mentors in my life… “you’re going to regret that one day!” So, take care of those aches and pains because trying to push through the pain barrier will not necessarily help in the long run.

Maytime in the Parish of Quairading BLESSING OF PLOUGH, SEED & CREATION: While sowing may be well underway there will be an opportunity for all members of the Quairading Shire to join in a Service of the Blessing of Plough, Seed & Creation at St Faith’s Church, Quairading, on Sunday, 1st May at 9.00 a.m. While the actual ploughing of the soil is very rare these days, paddocks are still prepared, and Plough Sunday celebrations offer a time and place to join together as the broader community to offer prayers for the blessing of creation, the land, the seed, and farm equipment, as well as for farmers and all other people involved in agricultural industry, and their families. In some parts of England, it is not uncommon for local farmers to attend the service with their tractors! Within the Avon Valley similar services will take place at the Church of St John in the Wilderness, The Dale at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday, 8th May and at St Andrew’s Church, Greenhills on Sunday, 15th May at 9.30 a.m.

EASTERTIDE: While Eastertide might last only a day in the retail world, in the life of the Church it continues until the Feast of Pentecost which occurs ten days after Jesus Christ has ascended to be with God the Father on Ascension Day. Pentecost, or Whit Sunday as it was once known, celebrates the Coming of the Holy Spirit and is Sunday, 5th June. During this Eastertide, the congregation will be celebrating the many different post-Resurrection appearances made by Jesus in a Service called “The Stations of the Resurrection” at the 5.30 p.m. service on Saturday, 14th May. There will be an Ascension Day service at St Faith’s Church on Thursday, 26th May at 5.30 p.m.
