GREEN, GREEN, THE WINNING MACHINE! Congratulations to Quairading Green on their (semi) recent bowls championship win! The recount from a roving reporter includes: “Quairading Green were playing for the second division grand final against Shackleton. Quairading had 3 teams of 4 players playing at the Cunderdin Bowling Club and towards the end of the game were a total of 18 shots in front! This margin could not be beaten by Shackleton and therefore Shackleton declared the grand final game won by Quairading without playing all of the ends”.

FROM THE EDITOR Goodness knows what the next month is going to bring! Hopefully some rain for the crops, dams, gardens and tanks. Hopefully a light breeze to blow away the evening mozzies. Hopefully more stunning sunrises and sunsets. Hopefully a lid on community transmission of COVID-19.

Hopefully more football (and netball and hockey) wins. Oh and I’m also hopeful for a safe and quarantine-free trip to Darwin with friends in the middle there somewhere - fingers crossed.

Off the back of a relatively busy April, May is looking reasonably quiet (due to how busy a big chunk of our community is about to be / already is with seeding!). So I shall skip right through to a couple of activities we’ve got planned for June: Evening on the Green: did you attend or hear about the last Evening on the Green we held back in October 2020? It was so fun, and easy and enjoyable for the whole family. So we’re doing it again! This time on Saturday 5th June, in celebration of Neighbourhood Centre Week. Yes, it’ll likely be chilly. Rug up and perhaps pack a thermos of your warm beverage of choice. See flyer on page 21.

AusChem Accreditation: perhaps slightly less fun than watching live music, but perhaps equally important. If you’ve got new staff, or old staff needing to relearn new tricks - send them our way for this two day course on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th June. Flick us an email for registration instructions. Along with a couple of other flyers for upcoming events around town, this edition of the Banksia Bulletin is pretty chockers with good reading material! There are stories of abandoned cricket pitches (page 20), news of a local art exhibition (page 18), a very useful guide to apostrophe use that I’ve been learning from and referring to for months (page 42), an update from Shire of Quairading’s Special Project Officer, Sarah Caporn on the Shire’s current projects on pages 38 & 39 and some words I’ve penned about the local benefits of regional collaboration on pages 40 and 41.

QUAIRADING GARDEN & AUSCHEM ACCREDITATION The two day AusChem Accreditation course will be held at the Quairading CRC on Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 June 2021 from 8:30am-4:30pm. This course is intended for anyone who uses agricultural chemicals or veterinary medicines unsupervised, including farmers, food producers, shire employees, mine rehabilitation, Parks & Wildlife employees and natural resource management employees. Accreditation is valid for five years. Ride Alongside to visit Quairading!

The 2021 Ride Alongside event will start from York on Monday 10 May 2021 and finish at Collie on Friday 14 May 2021. The 580km ride will visit the towns of York, Quairading, Bruce Rock, Narembeen, Hyden, Kondinin, Kulin, Wickepin, Narrogin, Williams and Collie for the event.

We will be cycling through the Wheatbelt and onto Collie to meet with local emergency services personnel to speak with them about the importance of good physical health and good mental health over a cup of tea. We also have members from our event charity partner, Sirens of Silence Charity Inc travelling as part of our support volunteer contingent and will speak on the various resources available.

There will be approximately 14 riders and 8 support volunteers travelling with the event.

Ride Alongside is an awareness event and is not a fundraiser. The great majority of riders are serving or former emergency services first responders and for the riders and support volunteers it's about looking after all our colleagues that look after our regional communities. Riders are participating in the event in their own time and taking leave from their jobs to participate.

The riders will be in Quairading for a lunch stop on Monday 10th May 2021 from 11:30am to 12:30pm.

All community members are welcome to pop down to the Quairading CRC for a cuppa and to show your support.

MEDIA RELEASE ART EXHIBITION People in the Quairading district and visitors will soon have an opportunity to own an original artwork for display in their homes.

Local Quairading resident Norm McDonald will show a collection of his paintings on the weekend of 28-29 May 2021 at the Pop-up “studio” next door to the Co-Op shop in Heal Street, Quairading.

Organised by Lyn Whyte, the exhibition will feature original oil paintings of the wheatbelt completed by Norm since moving to Quairading in 2005. Lyn first saw some of his paintings some time ago and suggested that he should have a public showing.

She encouraged him to put together this exhibition of the landscapes he is fond of painting.

From some sketches of Toapin Weir and the paddocks of local farms, Norm went bush and has completed a quantity of oil paintings in a style that was similar to when he last exhibited in Canberra in the late 1960’s. Norm recalls that the landscapes around Canberra and the valleys and mountains of the Snowy Mountains and Brindabella ranges were much different to the paddocks and country side of the wheatbelt here.

Now in his eighties, Norm remarked that it was much more pleasant to paint outdoors in the wheatbelt than having to rug up to overcome the cold of the Eastern state landscapes. “I still had the annoyance of flies and as captured in one of my paintings now on display, the attack of magpies in the Spring,” he recalled.

The exhibition will feature both framed and unframed artworks. Smaller art sketches painted outdoors as well as large studio paintings will be presented.

All visitors to the exhibition will receive a free entry for a prize draw of a painting at the conclusion of the exhibition.

Aban doned Cricket Pitches Written by Gordon Smith When I first heard about Les Everett and his project to locate, photograph and catalogue all the abandoned cricket pitches in WA I was immediately enchanted by the idea. What memories they must carry and all the stories that they will hold, all true and some that actually happened. Sport was critical to bring the community together in rural areas and so relic tennis courts and cricket pitches are found dotted around the countryside such as the tennis courts at Pantapin behind the old hall.

Being a semi-retired locum Pharmacist I began inquiring with the staff and customers in the towns I worked in about old pitches. If you want to find out anything in a rural town a pharmacy is a good place to start and it does not take long to discover who the local “cricket legend” is.

In Quairading, the name I was given was Kevin Simpson. It only took a minute on the phone to realise that we were kindred spirits and a visit to his house confirmed that. With perhaps the last Wamenusking cricket club cap in existence and signed country week bats and balls kept with figures such as 6 for 18 against Quairading, our mutual love of cricket was cemented.

Wamenusking and Dangin had already been discovered so Kevin took me to the two pitches in Quairading itself. The first one in the bush on the road to Cunderdin complete with a milk crate and a substantial bush at silly mid-on.

The second one at the old convent with tractor marks all over it.

But the one that caught my attention most was the one at the farm Kevin grew up on and later ran. Built in 1954 by his father Frank for Kevin, who was 12 at the time and his brothers Graeme and Frank (jnr) for the boys to “go and play outside”.

Kevin and his brothers along with cousin Colin Sharrett would spend many an hour plying their trade with bat and ball. Frank built some nets to protect the shed from the slog sweep but this plan come unstuck when Dick Aizlewood came to work at the farm. Dick was a mollydooker and the dents in the shed from his lusty blows still remain in evidence today.

The pitch on the farm is more than a slab of concrete. It holds the memory and the stories of a time when cricket was central to the community and young lads all dreamed of being a Don Bradman or a Keith Miller.

Loose Stitches It is so good to see winter sports being played this year, I think with the forced time off sport in 2020, everyone is raring to go. Although we have just had a small hiccup last weekend!!!!! Great to still see a tinge of green in the paddocks and on the golf course. Fingers crossed for a bit more rain this weekend.

Position Vacant EXECUTIVE MANAGER CORPORATE SERVICES The Shire of Quairading is seeking to appoint an Executive Manager of Corporate Services to actively lead the Corporate Services Team which provides key Financial Management and IT Services to the Organisation and provides a High level of Customer Services to the Community and Council’s Clients.

The Successful Applicant will be an integral Member of Council’s Executive Management Team developing and implementing Council’s Strategic Plans and Budgets.

This Position is an ideal opportunity for progression in or towards a career in Local Government.

Quairading Sub Centre News Our Purpose The purpose of St John Ambulance in Western Australia is to serve humanity and build resilient communities through relief of sickness, distress, suffering and danger.

Our Volunteers In Quairading our volunteers work to achieve this by:  Transferring patients to Northam Hospital or St John of God Midland  Transferring patients to the airstrip to assist the RFDS  Attending patient call outs for incidents such as falls, chest pain, diabetes, flu like symptoms, snakebites and Motor Vehicle Accidents  Ambulance attendance at local events, such as football and the Quairading Show Working in our community for the benefit of our community is the reward our volunteers receive, with there being no expectation of recognition or reward.

However, there are occasions when recognition of their efforts is received. The St John Investiture, conducted by the Knight Commander, the Honourable Kim Beazley AC KStJ, Governor of Western Australia, held on Saturday 10 April 2021, was one event that recognised the outstanding contribution of some of our volunteers for outstanding service to their community over many years.

These volunteers were:  Trevor Sandercock - Investment as a Member of St John  John Hards - Lifetime Association Certificate (50 years)  Errol Stone (Past Quairading resident) - Lifetime Association Certificate (50 years)  Kevin Simpson - Lifetime Association Certificate (60 years) In future editions of the Banksia Bulletin, it is intended to profile each of these St John volunteers.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm It has been a rather disappointing autumn so far. Note the tone of optimism in that sentence….so far…. As gardeners, I believe we are generally more optimistic than the general population. How else would you explain the sowing of seeds in the expectation of a harvest or the planting of a tiny cutting and waiting sometimes years that it should grow into a tree or a shrub? Perhaps at times such as these, when the end of April came with several 30 degree days and our optimism is well and truly being tested, we simply need to pour over another plant or bulb catalogue to dream that the planting season will soon be here. On a brighter note there was an increased number of attendants at the last QGLC meeting and we’re expecting an even greater number for our special guest from Yates. Everyone is invited to come to hear Mr Branden Rodgers from Yates, 28th May at 10am in the CWA Hall Quairading. Please RSVP to kriszyk@skymesh.com.au Tips of the Month 1. Propagate your own plants from seeds, division and cuttings. a) Seeds, best advice with seeds is to follow the instructions on the packet, keep soil moist if sowing where they are to grow or if sowing in pots use seed raising mix or sifted potting mix, no need for fertiliser as seeds are all packed and ready to grow.

Small seeds should be misted to keep moist, large seeds should only be watered when sown because they can rot if they are kept too moist. b) Cuttings, autumn is a great time for taking semi hardwood cuttings from many plants.

I mentioned many common ones in the April edition.

However, cuttings can be taken in most months of the year as long as they are looked after appropriately. I won’t go into detail about the difference between hardwood, semi hardwood and softwood cutting except to briefly say -Hardwood cuttings usually refer to cuttings taken from deciduous trees and shrubs in winter. Semi hardwood cuttings refer to cuttings taken after the summer growth has hardened a little and the stems of the plants are quite firm but not stiff, these are taken in middle to late autumn. Softwood cuttings are taken in late spring or early summer when plant stems are still flexible and green. Softwood and semi hardwood cuttings should be about 10cms in length and hardwood cuttings should be about 20cms. Take cuttings in the morning, keep them in water until planting, cut just below a node, use hormone powder or honey on the end of the cutting, use a pencil or a piece of doweling to make a hole for the cutting, press the soil medium firmly around it. I used the term, soil medium because it is not a good idea to put cuttings into garden soil (except for a few hardwood cuttings which are laid in trenches in free draining well dug loamy soil). The soil medium should be a mixture of perlite and potting mix. The cuttings taken in summer can put into about 2/3 potting mix and 1/3 perlite because this mix can hold more moisture where as the autumn and winter cuttings can put into 1/3 potting mix and 2/3 perlite. A simple way of keeping the moisture up to cuttings taken in summer is put a plastic bag tied off firmly over the pot. c) Division, this is perhaps the

easiest way of increasing the number of plants in your garden. It is simply the dividing up of plants which grow from bulbs, rhizomes or clumping. As the names suggests these plants are simply divided by cutting up, breaking up or tearing apart in most cases there is no need to be gentle.

2. Recycle and Reuse In the garden there many opportunities minimize waste. In fact nothing goes to waste in the garden. Keep used potting mix in a sealed bucket add worm castings and some homemade compost and you have new potting mix to use again.

Banana skins soaked in a bucket of water become potassium fertiliser, wood ash from the fire becomes potash (use this sparingly though), grass clippings, autumn leaves, weeds (without their seeds), straw or shredded paper and some manure becomes the best compost you can have. New pots are great but have you looked at the containers you already have? Even if they aren’t actual pots for plants, putting drainage holes in any container makes it suitable for a plant. Sharing produce, seeds, seedlings and cuttings is a great way of increasing your garden’s sustainability.

It’s time to…

Sow – Because it has been so warm if you put off sowing Sweet Pea or snow peas or any of the winter and spring flowering and fruiting plants there is still time to do this now in early May. However, don’t wait too long because seeds which go into warm soil grow better and flower sooner than those which are put into cold soil.

Plant – All native shrubs and trees, all winter vegetable seedlings and all deciduous trees can be planted in May. At Eaglewood Farm we’re waiting for the first decent rain and then we’ll be putting in almost 500 shrubs and trees.

Can’t wait! I can almost feel my sore back now.

Harvest – We’re picking the first mandarins, the last of the pears, apples, quinces (by the way if anyone wants some quinces to make quince paste or jelly please let me know email kriszyk@skymesh.com.au), chillies, lettuces, capsicums, Hungarian peppers, sweet potatoes, pomegranates, rhubarb and black Kalamata olives.

Things to do – If you’re planning to buy new roses now is the time to prepare the beds for them to be planted in winter. Dig in plenty of compost and aged manure. Make sure the bed will get at least full morning sun and protection from strong winds if possible. Your roses may start looking a bit ratty during May but don’t be tempted to prune till much later in the year. Don’t feed lawns once the cooler weather sets in it and lift your mower in May to leave more growth on the lawn. Prune back summer flowering plants like Pelargoniums and Hydrangeas.

Agapanthus need the flowering heads pulled to keep them from setting seed The last word – Growing food teaches you nothing is a failure; there’s always a lesson.

Quairading District High School News...

Anzac Day Commemoration At QDHS we spent the first week of term learning about the meaning of ANZAC and the great contribution and sacrifice made by Australian and New Zealand men and women both during WW1 and other global conflicts since.

Our students created many pieces of work for display in the library and each class presented a piece at the ANZAC assembly on Friday 23rd April. Our assembly was attended by community members, the P&C , Mr Gene Stone—RSL representative, Rotary of Quairading and school admin representatives.

Wreaths were laid and our students performed the song ‘Lest We Forget’ by Michael Reynolds whilst we all reflected on and gave thanks for their service. Our students served morning tea following the assembly whilst parents and community members viewed the class work from the week.

Update on Shire Projects Do you remember hearing about Quairading’s success in receiving $1 million of funding thanks to the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Programme? There are 10 projects in total so here’s an update on a few more of the projects that are either underway or have been completed.

Arthur Kelly Village

Two projects have been completed in the Arthur Kelly precinct. The works on the access road has been completed (but is being re-done due to some large cracks appearing not long after it was done) and the new rooves are on. Don’t they look fantastic! The team at Roof & Wall Doctor were wonderful to work with, neat and tidy during construction and we’ve heard nothing but praise from the residents.

Youth Centre

One of our last projects to start is upgrades at the Youth Centre (RSL Hall) in Murphy Street. Local contractor Adam May (ably assisted by other local trades) will be assisting the Shire to transform the space. The changes will mainly focus on inside spaces such as a new kitchen and toilets but we can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s all done.

What’s going on with the Park!?

In a sentence, our Community Park project – Kwirrading Koort - got run over by the Covid bus.

With an estimated cost of over $700,000, we’ll need external funding for the project to go ahead.

The Shire had an application ready for submission when the pandemic hit. Lotterywest closed their funding streams to new applications and stayed closed for some months while they worked out how best to respond to the pandemic and the needs of the WA community.

When they came back online, our project didn’t really fit well into any of their 2020 priority focuses which included crisis support services (Foodbanks) and focusing on recovery for people most impacted by the Covid job losses and restrictions such as disabled people, remote Aboriginal communities and disadvantaged youth aged between 15 and 24 years. We withdrew our Community Park application from their pile to allow them to focus on these high needs groups.

While we sort out the funding, we’ve been working with Ecoscape Australia on a Final Design for the park area. It’s still a mix of lawns and gardens, play equipment for different ages as well as a public toilet and picnic shelter with electric BBQ. Drop into the CRC to view a larger copy of the design below.

A special part of our Park will be including lots of local materials such as nearby granite rocks and native plants. Another special Quairading item we plan to include is the old Shire Roller. We are working with the Vintage Club to work out how best to make the item safe for play and sprucing it up with some new paint.

In closing, my fingers and toes are all crossed that we will secure the funding ready for construction during the 2021/22 Financial Year.

The local benefit in regional collaboration Written by Jill Hayes, Coordinator of the Quairading CRC Over the last eight or so months, we’ve been working alongside a network of Wheatbelt Community Resource Centres (CRCs) to investigate areas and methods in which we can work collaboratively to deliver greater benefit to our region and our individual communities. We recognise that regional collaboration to deliver even greater value for money is a current priority of the State Government for Community Resource Centres and it was by coming together and advocating for our strengths as a network that ultimately saved our funding being decimated by the new McGowan Government back in 2018.

While each individual CRC is contracted by the Department of Primary Industry & Regional Development (DPIRD) to deliver services to their local community, outside of the contract, each individual CRC also delivers and is involved in a range of support, services, activities and initiatives for their local community. There are similarities in the strengths and challenges held by each CRC across the Wheatbelt and state that make them vital for each of their communities. These challenges include often non-existent public transport, a growing digital divide, managing community expectations and constantly pivoting in order to respond to and pre-empt changes in community needs. Our strengths include local knowledge, ability to deliver place-based services, our passion, connectedness and flexibility. As we collaborate we’re also uncovering specific individual skills we can share within the network, such as a background in law, grant writing, graphic design, industrial relations and more.

Brought together through a membership for support services with the Wheatbelt Business Network, our Wheatbelt network includes York CRC, Narembeen CRC, Corrigin CRC, Mukinbudin CRC, Dalwallinu CRC, Nungarin CRC, Southern Cross CRC, Toodyay CRC, Koorda CRC, Wyalkatchem CRC, Bencubbin CRC, Westonia CRC and Katanning Hub CRC. We connect through occasional face-to-face workshops and more regular online Zoom video calls. The opportunity for networking, best practice sharing and talking through common issues to find successful solutions had been incredibly valuable.

As a group we’ve been on the lookout for collaborative projects to put our combined expertise towards, three of which are on the go at the moment: Mental Health First Aid Training Sparked by a well-received Mental Health First Aid info session held by the Quairading CRC and delivered by Phillippa Henderson of The Sharing Shed in late 2020 to gauge community interest, it became incredibly evident that all regional communities would benefit from the training of key community members in Mental Health First Aid training.

By then collaborating with the wider network, Wheatbelt Business Network submitted a funding application to FRRR and we’ve been able to secure funding to make the delivery of the full two day course possible and affordable to the community of Quairading – plus four other communities in our network.

Google Expert Training With the Wheatbelt Business Network’s assistance, the Quairading CRC applied for funding through DPIRD’s (Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development) Technology and Innovation Grant for our group of CRCs to undertake training to become accredited Google Experts in digital marketing, data and technology. There are currently no Google Experts in regional WA, so any businesses needing assistance must travel to the metro area (or pay travel for an expert to come to them).

The funding will help cover the time staff members will spend in training and will help us professionally package and market the new service we will each be able to offer to local and regional businesses.

Town Team Movement’s civic place-making conference, the ‘Dowerin Do-Over’ As a way to practice place making activities, learn through collaborating with new people and communities and showcase the work CRCs can do in their communities to external stakeholders – we were invited to both attend and help with some aspects of Town Team Movements (TTM) civic recovery program’s first regional event, the Dowerin Do-Over - schedule for Friday 30 April 2021.

The community of Dowerin was selected as the location for this inaugural regional conference following previous “main street audit” work they’d undertaken with the Wheatbelt Business Network.

The idea of improving the aesthetic and vibe of a regional main street / down town is not unique to Dowerin and is something many communities are looking for inspiration and assistance on – Quairading included. We’re looking forward to bringing some of our new skills and insight gained from working with TTM to projects in Quairading. ___________________________________________ These collaborative partnerships have been super beneficial to our team in terms of professional development, and have taught us new things in regards to community place-making, consultation and working together – both what to do, and what not to do. They’ve also inspired us to lead other regional collaborations such as putting forward a proposal to the Avon Football Association for the Quairading CRC to compile the weekly football budgets and have them printed locally in each community of the football league. This proposal has been successful and we’re working weekly with the York CRC, Beverley CRC, Cunderdin CRC and Kellerberrin CRC to print the footy budgets locally (instead of them being outsourced to Perth based businesses).

WBN will continue to provide networking opportunities along with upskilling and workshop opportunities to our network of CRCs, particularly via video conference so we don’t even need to leave our Centres to grow our abilities, and therefore service offering back to our communities.

A regional approach is not always going to be the best approach for our community and this of course is something we’ll always keep in the forefront of our minds.

Very occasionally, apostrophes can help clarify expressions, even when they aren't needed.  Dot your i’s and cross your t’s.

Its and it’s There is a difference! 'Its’ indicates possession, whereas 'it's' indicates a contraction and means either 'it is' or 'it has'.

“When you assume, you make an ASS out of U and ME” I first heard these words of wisdom years ago when I was learning to drive. I’d made an assumption about what another driver was going to do. My driving instructor’s response told me my assumption was incorrect. He hit the brakes, and said those words. At the time, I didn’t fully understand what he meant, but thought it was intriguing enough to commit to memory.

These days, I get it.

Why assumptions start It’s easy to make assumptions. All you need is incomplete information about a situation. And an unwillingness to ask the questions you need to complete the information. In the absence of complete information, you have to fill in the blanks yourself.

You fill in the blanks with YOUR interpretation of what you see or hear. Your interpretation comes from past experiences that seem similar. It comes from your past experiences, and also from those you’ve heard about from others.

Armed with your information, you connect dots that aren’t there. You can’t help doing this because you’re missing relevant information. In trying to make sense of the situation, you make connections between today and the past. Connections that don’t really exist. You jump to conclusions that are wrong.

When I was learning to drive, I saw a driver doing something, and assumed he’d do x next. He didn’t. He did y instead, making it likely I was going to hit him. Hence my instructor’s brake-hitting.

Had I scanned what was around me for more information, I’d have seen x wasn’t possible. He had to do y.

How assumptions develop If assumptions are incorrect when dealing with rational matters, ponder this. What happens when emotions come into play?

All hell breaks loose. You see, emotions arrive with many sensitive buttons. These buttons are the places where you got hurt in the past. Your memory has stored this past pain. And activates it whenever your nervous system recognizes anything that feels painfully familiar.

Once activated, you react as if you’re experiencing that same pain again. Your old pain feels as real today as it did when you got hurt. Your present situation doesn’t even need to be the same as the past one that hurt you.

When those emotional buttons get pressed, the resulting dot-connecting is rarely kind. The assumptions you make in this state have one thing in mind. Lashing out in some way. To repel or hurt someone with unkind and disrespectful words presented as fact.

What assumptions do Behind these harsh words lie the original hurt. And an unwillingness to step up and own your part in it.

This is toxic for the people you’re lashing out at, and for you. The negative energy expressed with this can take a toll on health. Theirs and yours. And by pressing your pain buttons again and again, you deepen your hurt.

Why you should avoid making assumptions like the plague 1. They’re an easy out. The path of least resistance is also the path of least growth.

2. They stop you from taking responsibility for your life. Assumptions allow you to hide behind your version of the story. This means you don’t own your part in the true story. You prefer to blame others for your misfortune, rather than look in the mirror.

3. They keep you stuck in the past. Assumptions rely on old information to fill in blanks and connect dots. Instead of expanding your horizons, you retreat into the past. Into your painful past.

4. It’s lazy behaviour. Instead of asking questions to get the information you need, you jump to conclusions.

5. They foster a negative mindset. Most assumptions are derived from old, painful information. This reinforces your innate negativity bias that dates back to prehistoric times.

And keeps you thinking the world is a fundamentally hostile place.

6. It’s toxic behaviour. To protect yourself from more hurt, you use your assumptions to lash out at others. This is bad for them, and you.

7. They become a bad habit. The more you make assumptions, the easier it is to continue making them. You find it easier to relive past hurts to get missing information than to ask questions. Go figure!

8. They deepen your pain. The more you pick at a sore, the more painful it gets. And it doesn’t get a chance to heal.

9. Assumptions are ALWAYS wrong. I have a perfect record with the assumptions I’ve made. 100% of them have been wrong. And it’s hard to believe that I’m unique in this.

Life beyond assumptions These days, instead of making assumptions, I ask questions. Lots of them. Even if this means finding out a truth that might be painful to hear. If my default behaviour kicks in and I start to assume something, I notice it. And nip it in the bud.

Since I started asking questions and stopped making assumptions, I’m much happier. I’ve managed to release much of my past pain by not activating it constantly. I’ve grown a lot from all the information I’ve gathered through asking questions. I enjoy conversations more because I’m not worrying about protecting myself. I’ve deepened my compassion for others by understanding the fears that lay behind their assumptions. I’m more positive. I’m more fun to be around.

If you think you’re pretty assumption-free, try this. Make a note of every assumption you make during an average day. And double it to count the ones you don’t notice.

If you’re like me, you’ll be surprised by the result.

Over the past two months we have covered the period of Lent. Our readings seem to have dwelt on the things about the Israelites as Gods chosen people to make known God’s purpose which was through a covenant that had been given to them. However that had failed so God was promising a new covenant that would not fail. It leads up to Good Friday when Jesus was crucified. So God sent His son as the new covenant and raised Him back to life on Easter Sunday. This new covenant provided a way for all people to be accepted into His kingdom, which is good news.

The beauty about grain bowls is that they're infinitely adaptable. You can roast just about any veggie and it'll taste amazing in this recipe. Or you can skip the chicken and make a hearty beef Buddha bowl instead. You're not gonna want to skip the peanut butter dressing though. It's insanely addictive and one of our favourite sauces EVER. Leftovers make a great packed lunch for a few days!

Serves: 4 Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes INGREDIENTS 1 large sweet potato, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes 1 large red onion, diced 3 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1/2 tsp. garlic powder 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1 small clove garlic, minced 2 tbsp. creamy peanut butter 1/4 c. Juice of 1 lime 1 tbsp. low-sodium soy sauce 1 tbsp. honey 1 tbsp. toasted sesame oil 4 c. cooked brown rice 1 avocado, thinly sliced 2 c. baby spinach 1 tbsp. Freshly chopped cilantro, for garnish 1 tsp. Toasted sesame seeds

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 425°. On a large baking sheet, toss sweet potatoes and onion with 1 tablespoon of oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake until tender, 20 to 25 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat, heat 1 tablespoon of oil. Season chicken with garlic powder, ginger, salt, and pepper. Cook until golden and no longer pink, 8 minutes per side. Let rest 10 minutes, then slice.

In a small bowl, whisk together garlic, peanut butter, lime juice, soy sauce, and honey. Whisk in sesame oil and remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil until smooth.

Divide rice among four bowls and top each with sweet potato mixture, chicken, avocado, and baby spinach. Sprinkle with cilantro and sesame seeds and drizzle with dressing before serving.

Warrior Wellbeing Living our Life by Quarters Just like a lot of sports, if we view our life through the paradigm of life taking four quarters to play then we find there are many common themes. A blokes life expectancy is 80 to 82 years and I have had fruitful discussions with several blokes who have died around this age.

Subsequently I feel it is apt to be able to breakdown our life’s journey into four quarters.

The four quarter (61 to 80 years) is the time we get to enjoy the spoils of the game. We hope we have some distance between us and the opposition and are kicking with the wind, consolidating our position and winning the game (we can smell the roses and reflect on the hard yards we have put into life and hopefully enjoyed the journey).

First Quarter (0 to 20 years).
