FROM THE EDITOR Usually I’ll write here about all the great things that went on this month and all the exciting events and activities planned for the coming month, probably comment on the weather and note something cool going on beyond the Quairading CRC—which this time of year would be the dang exciting start to a new footy season—so ah yeah, I’m a little hard pressed for content right now. It’s been five weeks since we closed the Quairading CRC to the public and shifted our computer screens home. Mine have been shifted about three times since then as I try to find a comfy work space that actually allows me more than twenty minutes of focus at a time—the lure of cooking, Netflix-ing, puzzling, hair braiding, video calling friends and can you believe it, even cleaning are regularly proving far too tempting! Luckily I found a good spot and have managed to produce an entire Banksia Bulletin from my breakfast bar. The days are seeming to go on forever, blurring into the next yet somehow the weeks are flying by. With the number of daily new cases of COVID-19 in the state remaining relatively low it seems reasonable that some restrictions will be slowly lifted over the coming weeks, BUT it could totally take months for all restrictions to lift and it could totally take months and months for us to feel comfortable to visit friends across regions and immerse ourselves in large crowds. It’s certainly proving to be a marathon, not a sprint. At this point we don’t yet have a date that the Quairading CRC will be reopened to the public, but as always we’re available by email and phone and can still carry out essential print and copy services for you—by appointment. May you feel optimism more often than you feel pessimism, rid the guilt wherever you may be feeling it and find some sort of productivity that suits you and your household right now—even if it’s just putting on pants each day. Luckily putting on pants will become easier, as the mornings have suddenly gotten chillier! Oh look at that, I managed to comment on the weather. My thoughts go out to those who are mourning the loss of loved ones in incredibly difficult circumstances. It is our absolute pleasure to welcome Michael Grage and Nicole Hargrave as the upcoming new Licensees of Quairading Book Post. We believe we are leaving our Post Office in the very best hands with Mick, Nicki and their family. Our time in Quairading has been such a lovely experience for our small and young family. We are sure that Bodhi will always remember his mail run and post office days and not to forget his little friendships he has made, as will we both. The support we have had from the whole community since we begun has been so wonderful and we’re truly so grateful. We will cherish the friendships that we have created and that will continue to flourish past boundaries and regions. Thank you so much for welcoming us into your homes, we are both sad but happy for the change in direction that is to come. We will truly miss Q town and all of you, but hope to still see you around some time! Government Funded Stock for the 2020 Flu Season has arrived. Some of you will have already had your jab prior to this bulletin. Those patients that identify with the below mentioned criteria for the funded program and would like a vaccination, please call the surgery for an appointment. Eligibility for government-funded influenza vaccines in WA in 2020 includes the following groups: Pregnant women (any trimester). All individuals aged 65 years and older. All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and older. Individuals aged 6 months or over with medical conditions that place them at risk for complications of influenza, e.g. cardiac disease, chronic respiratory conditions, chronic neurological conditions, immunocompromising conditions, diabetes and other metabolic disorders, renal disease, hematological disorders, and children aged 6 months to 10 years receiving long term aspirin therapy. All children aged 6 months to less than 5 years. (The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation recommends influenza vaccination for children aged 6 months to less than 5 years). WE ARE CURRENTLY OUT OF PRIVATE FLU VACCINE STOCK but we have ordered more! Yes, we did order more than last year, given Covid 19 and more patients wishing to vaccinate. The trouble we have, being a small surgery is storage capacity, we only have a small vaccine fridge. Staff will let you know once they have arrived.

QUAIRADING DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL NEWS We’re back at school this week and it has been lovely to see the beautiful faces of our young people as they join us for term two. I hope our community has enjoyed the Easter and Anzac celebrations at home. At the end of term one staff had been planning and developing home learning packages with which to begin term 2. Many of our students also worked hard at home to complete tasks set by their teachers and we received some beautiful photos and messages from families during that process. I would also like to thank our families and school community for the tremendously positive approach to the difficult time in which we have found ourselves over the past two months. Many of our families have expressed appreciation and support for our staff and I am comforted by the understanding and confidence that has been brought about through this predicament. Our staff too, have approached this emergency with commitment, integrity and compassion, for which I am deeply grateful. Over the holidays, our government made changes according to current Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) advice regarding the low risk of COVID-19 in schools. I am anticipating we will be moving back to an ‘even keel’ as the term progresses. At this stage, for term two and beyond, our school is open for all students whose parents and carers choose to return to school. We have some new ways of working within the school to keep our children and community safe. These include (but are not limited to) increased environmental cleaning throughout the day and after breaks; particular personal hygiene measures and education across the school; Parents are dropping children at the gates; excursions, assemblies, camps and interschool activities will not be conducted; and our volunteer canteen helpers will have a break for the time being. There will be a review of these arrangements in the lead up to week 4 and the Education Department will inform us of any adjustments to be made based on health advice and infection trends across the community. Our condolences to the families of Mrs Mary Clemens who passed away recently. Condolences to families of Mrs Beryl Dick. Beryl has been a strong supporter of the school for a long period of time and has consistently presented a calm and compassionate persona to our students and staff. She will be sadly missed in our school community. We are working through some incredibly significant challenges as we begin term two. I will continue to communicate with families and the school community as to further developments and changes as we a contend with each new development of the era of COVID-19, and continue to educate our children in a supportive and connected school community. Hello again to all residents and readers of the Quairading “Banksia Bulletin” for the April Edition of Cop’s Corner. Let’s get straight down to business, some of you may be aware that we are currently in a State of Emergency, as ordered by the Commissioner of Police in his capacity as the State Emergency Coordinator. The purpose of the directions by our State Government has been the Closure and Restriction Directions to abate the spread of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Whilst we are aware that most citizens of Quairading have been abiding by these strange / weird / restrictive and seemingly controlling measures set upon us, it is disappointing to report some members of our community took no heed to the warnings and alerts set in place to assist in preventing further outbreaks in Regional Western Australia. Of note were several Large Gatherings over the Easter Long Weekend, with BBQs, Parties and Social Get Togethers all weekend. Your local officer’s and Police from other towns had to be called out and away from their own families to enforce the social distancing rules and people visiting other homes which could have easily caused a major outbreak if just one of these people were infected (known or not) with the coronavirus. Please, for the remaining period of the restrictions, assist us and all the members of this community by remaining vigilant and compliant with instructions from the WA Government’s Health Department and keep yourselves, your family - especially children and elderly at home - where they are the safest they can be. Once again, Quairading Police have had to deal with more damage complaints, from our Shire where there has been damage caused, this time by Graffiti, to the toilets at the Community Building and the bench seating in the Gazebo at the Town Hall. GETTING MORE FROM YOUR SCRAPS Written by Tamara Spark We’ve been given the gift of time…. If nothing else, the COVID-19 global pandemic has afforded many of us the time to try our hand at all those cool online life hacks we’ve saved in our phones; once, never to be viewed a second time but now with so many of us idle, they’re making the transition from intention to action, I’ve been ticking items of my to-do list like a mad (wo)man!
Dalgona coffee Binge entire Netflix series (Hey all you cool cats and kittens!) Japanese soufflé pancakes Preserved flower arrangements Finish multiple novels Growing vegetables in my garden Growing vegetables on my kitchen bench
Now don’t let those ticks fool you, I may have tried my hand at these fun activities but they have definitely not all been great successes. Perhaps now though, especially with so many children still at home, is the ideal time to get them involved and excited about growing—with the hope of converting that interest into eating—vegetables! Everybody had the same idea with seeds and seedlings so they are actually quite hard to come by (I’m still waiting for a shipping notice for seeds I order 5 weeks ago!) but you don’t even need seeds or seedlings, you can regrow veggies from the scraps you normally discard (sorry chookens!). I did an involuntary happy jig in the kitchen when the first of my avocado seeds finally rooted! It only took 4 weeks of me checking multiple times a day and I’m still holding out hope for the other 3 late bloomers. If you’re not in it for the long game though there are definitely other #veggiescraps that offer much quicker rewards. Spring onion cuttings for one, seem to start regrowing within a couple of hours of being put in shallow water! Lettuce is also another fast rewards option. Then there is; carrot tips, beetroot tops, onion ends, pineapple tops, celery, garlic cloves, ginger roots, potatoes...plus, like all the other vegetables! It’s pretty much the same procedure no matter what you’re trying to regrow. Stick your off cuts (tops and bottoms) into shallow water so the scraps can butt chug the water (don’t let your children look this up, it’s an actual watering term but also has another sinister meaning!) and produce new growth. The magical land of the internets has all the information you do and don’t need to grow just about any damn thing so gets clicking and gets experimenting I say!

THANK YOU St John WA Quairading sub centre would like to thank some amazing people and organisations from within our community that have supported us over the past few months. As a part of St John WA, we are expected to abide by the guidelines and regulations required of a professional organisation. Our volunteers are also privileged to have the opportunity to be trained to the highest standard, so that we can best assist our community when required. However, we do not have any external sources of funding available to be able to provide our service to the community. The income that we receive from callouts, hospital transfers, first aid courses, sale of first aid kits and benefit fund renewals is used to cover all of the ongoing maintenance and running costs of the sub centre, as well as our long-term planning for capital improvements and purchase of new ambulances, when required. To assist us, we are extremely grateful for the support and donations that we have received from the following individuals and organisations over the past few months and take this opportunity to acknowledge their support: First, an enormous thank you to Luke and Kelly at Quairading Book Post. The Quairading sub centre is very appreciative of Luke and Kelly’s efforts in receiving the benefit fund renewal payments and the passing on of any queries. Greg Richards was the winner of this “Random Acts of Kindness’ competition a few months back and Quairading sub centre are extremely fortunate to have been the organisation Greg chose to support. Thank you so much. Our final big thank you is to Primaries Quairading. Primaries Quairading was the WA finalist for the Primaries store of the year. Although not the eventual winner of the Australian Primaries store of the year, each of the finalists received $1500.00 for donation to the organisation or charity of their choice. Hearing stories and taking a photograph of our humans. Our focus is on disabled people interviewing people, including non-disabled people, in community settings. This is a Wheatbelt Health Network project. Published 5th February 2020 I was born and bred in Quairading. I think my favourite memories of growing up were the special times out on the farm. We used to go on bush picnics on Sundays as a family and, in the spring, there was a creek running and plenty of wildflowers.

The advice I have for a younger version of myself is to take any opportunity that seems like it will lead to something good, especially if it will make you happy. Don’t get too focused on having to have a career with a fancy title, because success can come in so many different forms. AGEING BEAUTIFULLY This weeks column is written by Helen Roth. It is an odd time to be alive. I question at times whether I was born into the wrong era. What happened to the reverence, respect and honour for the ageing women that we once had? I sat for a while the other morning, watching a group of women aged from their fifties to eighties, and even one I know is in her nineties, practicing Tai Chi underneath a little old weatherboard rural school building. The school being long closed, it now functions as a tiny local community centre. It was a beautiful and profound thing to see these ladies of the bush slowly, peacefully practice their art. Such concentration alongside a palpable calmness and as they completed their final sequence for the hour, their smiles showed off their absolute enjoyment. It crossed my mind how much wisdom, knowledge and understanding of life was there in that gathering - how wonderful to see after a lifetime of hard work, having and rearing children and years of caring for husbands, families and farms through what I am sure would have been some amazing highs and also some absolute tragedies. These women now take time out each week to nurture and maintain their own bodies, souls and minds. Their value in today's society might seem diminished, as our fast paced, technology controlled, youth and beauty obsessed culture steam rolls towards an uncertain goal. For me, as I edge ever closer to fifty, I see these women glow with an aura of acceptance, wisdom and courage that I envy. Their loving welcome and caring acceptance of me every time I arrive never fails to pull at my heart strings. Living in an age where many young people are too busy or too distant to visit even their own grandparents anymore and a time where grey hair and lines on your face are being judged like a character flaw ... where being middle aged and looking it is considered ugly, and so many people are looking to trade in for a younger version. The value of experience, wisdom and years of learning comes far down the list of desirable attributes and sadly well behind the value of the look of your face. Have we forgotten how wonderful it was to have grandmothers, aunties and great aunts and the mums of your friends and neighbours to share our trials and successes with? I haven't forgotten. Grandma would always take your side when you thought the world or even your own mum was being unfair to you. As the Tai Chi ladies greet me each time with open arms and careful questions on how I am coping with my life, the weather and my farm, a sympathetic ear and tidbits of very carefully worded advice, I treasure the wisdom and caring of these wise ladies. Our fast paced society could benefit from a slow cup of tea with any one of them once in a while. I don't ignore the lines on their faces and nor the ones on mine. I see the beauty of all of these lives well lived. I see the joys and the memories and most importantly, I see the determination and inner strength that has got them through to a wondrous time in their lives. The celebration of the ageing of women is long overdue for a return. You can't return and be a younger model of yourself, despite what all the beauty advertising likes to portray. And I, for one, certainly don't want to. So if fate allows it, old aged womanhood - here I come, replete with all the grey hairs, laughter and frown lines and hopefully a head full of memories, knowledge and wisdom that rides along with each and every one of our oh so unique lives. And I hope that one day I'm going to be a kickass country grandma like mine was!

Coronavirus Care – caring for others in our community The coronavirus is a major global public health challenge that is having a significant impact on the daily lives of many in our community. All levels of government are taking strong and carefully considered steps to reduce the spread of coronavirus and to protect all Australians, particularly the elderly and the vulnerable. While the government focuses on the social and economic challenges the global pandemic is causing, it is important we step up as a community and help those around us who may need support over the coming weeks and months. Although social distancing and self-isolation are important tools in the fight against coronavirus, they can pose challenges for those in our community without a support network. Together with my staff in my three Durack regional offices, we are working hard to find answers to your questions and offer reassurance to you all in Durack during this challenging time. The weather gurus are saying it will be a good winter for rain but that it won’t be starting till the end of May. And as the burning of paddocks and dry seeding has started all around us I am reminded that hope springs eternal and so I try to keep that at the front of mind even when I’m rationing water to my orchard trees and my ornamental garden. These beautiful cool days are making it easy to be in the garden and the Bougainvilleas are blooming everywhere. I hope you have one or two to cheer you up in your garden.

WARRIOR WELLBEING Stress in a viral world
Ironically, many of us “crack a Corona” after a long day at work as a way of easing stress, however many blokes and community members are currently feeling under the pump a little more than usual and therefore, a discussion around that discomfort is timely. The feeling of not being in control and the subsequent stress that we feel has probably never been more widespread than it is today with the threat of Covid19 (The Coronavirus) affecting not only Australia, but the world. Stressful events can creep up on us, however the current situation is more like that big wave bearing down on us at the beach, we’re watching it, but we just have to brace ourselves and hang on. Stress is an entirely normal response to a perceived threat and it’s useful when preparing us to take action. That fight or flight mechanism, getting us ready for impending trouble can serve us well, but given free reign, can also result in us becoming dysfunctional. Letting unresolved stress overburden us is termed “situational distress” and it’s important that we understand (depending on our individual capacity and other contributing factors) staying in this distressed state for prolonged periods can push some of us towards a mental illness diagnosis. What Not to Do Retreat into ourself and shun the support of friends and family. Self-medicate with alcohol or drugs. Ignore surrounding events and do nothing or procrastinate about making any preparations. Over-analyse or dwell upon the mountain of negative media and sensational reporting. Catastrophise and hoard toilet paper and face masks for the zombie apocalypse.
Make reasonable and prudent preparations for the contingencies that are within our control. An example might be to have enough supplies for a possible 14-day selfquarantine period. This doesn’t constitute hording; it’s a balanced and proportionate response. Have discussions with family around what we will do if someone in the household does get sick. What is the most appropriate room for them? Bathroom access (easier if there is two)? Meal preparation options and shopping options (friends/family/online)? Brush up on our sick leave/carer entitlements. Have a discussion with our employers around whether working from home might be an option should we be sick and short of leave. Reinforce to our kids and ourselves and importantly practice, good hygiene. The most effective preventative step we can take is as simple as washing our hands thoroughly.
Three ways that we can alleviate the burden of stress are to: Avoid the stressor; so be informed but don’t dwell or pore over the inexhaustible mountain of sensationalist press. Adapt to the stressor; make reasonable and proportionate precautions. Accept the stressor; sometimes we just need to realise that some things are beyond our control.
