WHO LET THE BULLS OUT? On Sunday 15 April, the Bulls and Belles came charging out the gate to kick off the 2018 winter sports season. The Quairading Bulls Football Club enjoyed two very comfortable wins over the Cunderdin Magpies, who are having trouble finding their wings

this year, and the Quairading Belles Netball team avoided the “thrashing” they came to know well last year, and while they didn’t come away with a win, their heads and hopes are still being held high.

Both clubs thanked their endless list of supporters, sponsors, volunteers and players at the Season Opener event that evening and had yet another great success with the footy club’s Calcutta Auction fundraiser.

FROM THE EDITOR Nothing makes me feel more gosh darned Australian than taking a day off right in the middle of the week! Admittedly though, both Tamara and myself are just far too committed to our jobs and both actually came to work on a PUBLIC HOLIDAY just to get this edition of the Banksia Bulletin out.

This month we’re excited to once again be working with the Black Swan State Theatre Company and Lotterywest to bring another live broadcast from the State Theatre to you right here in Quairading.

On Friday 18th May you can watch Ray Lawler’s Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, with a drink of your choosing. Your choice because you get to bring it #byo. Bookings are essential so we can be sure to arrange enough seating and whip up enough delicious canapés (included in the $10 ticket price).

Thanks to those of you who came along to our Open House event earlier this month and those who have been in to offer their support to our campaign against the proposed funding cuts to CRCs. The campaign is reaching its height and if it’s something you’re not really sure about, now is the time to get informed; we’ve included a bunch of info in this edition of the Banksia Bulletin for you. Right now (like, this week) we’re calling on all of you to help us make our point loud and clear; it’s not just a matter of the few of us potentially losing our part-time jobs, we are seriously concerned about the negative flow on affects a cut to our funding and service delivery will have on our community. Your community. The state government is on a mission to reduce spending (hey, who isn’t?!) but a cut to our state wide network of CRCs is going to cost them far more.

Happy seeding to all of you out on the land, here’s hoping for some decent rain soon to moisten up the dirt, and revive our gardens!

Please do not give out your bank details as PCYC state office has told me that these are not legitimate people working on behalf of PCYC. 5. Everyone’s ideas are valued and the newer and crazier the ideas, the better.

MAY 2018 FLU SEASON As you may be aware the Government Funded vaccines for the 2018 year are being released a little later than normal so as to maximise the vaccine, covering the later period of the flu season. Please be advised that we have scheduled the following dates for vaccination, for patients that fall into the Government Funded scheme.

Eligibility for these clinics:  Children, 6 months to < 5 years.  Children, >5 years (Aboriginal/TSI and/or medically at risk).  Patients > 65 years.  Pregnant Women at any trimester.

CRC FUNDING CUTS We need your voice, now!

You may have heard that from mid 2019, the State Government is planning on reducing service contract funding for Community Resource Centres (CRCs) by nearly 40%. If this happens, CRCs across the state including the Quairading CRC will have to reduce their service delivery considerably and may carry our cost cutting activities such as reduced opening hours. We are calling on our communities to show their support of the community capacity building and economic development that CRCs do.

The network has been in existence (initially as Telecentres under the then Labor Government) for 27 years and with over 100 CRCs in regional towns across our great state, it is a wellestablished, well respected, professional and perfectly placed network for government delivery of information, support, programs and initiatives directly to the grass roots of these communities and their surrounding districts.

Our CRC is not alone in having become more responsive in recent times to tourists/visitors to our towns. Many CRCs now have designated visitor information areas and of course staff with valuable local knowledge on hand up to 40 hours per week. CRCs, as is their nature, have embraced the online world and their use of social media to promote and inform is invaluable in supporting economic development and visitor servicing in regional WA. Small businesses abound in regional areas and CRCs continually strive to promote Shop Local campaigns, seek training opportunities for business owners and staff and organise events that encourage networking between local small businesses. The opportunity to work with Business Local, just as one example, in bringing their services into our small towns must be seen as excellent value to the government. In some cases CRCs are even playing the lead role for their local Chambers of Commerce.

CRCs frequently take the baton and run with State Government supported initiatives such as Youth Week, Volunteers Week, Seniors Week, Bike Week and Science Week to name a few. The Network’s ability to share ideas between CRCs ensures that every community has a fantastic variety of activities offered on these occasions which ensures individuals feel valued and cared about. This leads to a strong sense of community and belonging which in turn has a positive impact on the mental wellness of all.

A core part of the rationale for CRCs is community development along with service provision for individuals, families, groups and businesses. Each CRC responds to local need as it manifests and each locality is diverse in terms of key priorities. There are a myriad of local economic and community conditions across the diverse regions of WA. CRCs liaise with agencies and not-for-profits based in both metropolitan and strategic regional locations to deliver services based on local needs thus enabling local communities to build their capacity.

In 2010 when CRCs were rebranded from Telecentres and starting receiving more than the $20 000 they’d been receiving since 1991 the Network blossomed. Management Committees were PAGE 12

able to pay their hard working staff an award wage, centres could afford to have at least two staff employed at all times thus addressing safety concerns of working alone and more recently, we are seeing young professionals being attracted as employees to CRCs. The need and capacity for CRCs to deliver even more on behalf of Government to their communities was finally addressed.

Since CRCs have had Linkwest as their peak body we all now have better access to customised support, training and networking opportunities; personalised resources as well as advice and assistance in areas such as centre governance, policies, and mediation. The professionalism of the network continues to grow, which in turn benefits our local communities as most CRC staff are involved with other not for profit clubs or groups – generally as volunteers – thus sharing their new-found skills and knowledge. CRCs are the perfect support and training ground for future leaders in our regional communities.

There is so much more to the WA Community Resource Network than meets the eye. The long list of initiatives, training, support, activities and programs that local CRCs deliver to their communities is impressive as well as vitally important. Please take the time to have a closer look and understand how valuable they all are in the work they carry out in support and on behalf of government. I feel sure the Network would be one of the government’s most efficient, cost effective services providing a large impact for a relatively small investment. I have attached to my email several items of valuable reading for your information, especially the report Curtin University, led by Professor John Phillimore, conducted on behalf of the Department of Regional Development in 2016 The proposed funding cuts will have a profound effect on regional, rural and remote Western Australian communities. Our existing 33 month contracts have been slashed to 18 and no external, independent review is occurring in conjunction with these seemingly rash and harsh decisions. The lack of consultation and respect shown to date has been very disheartening.

Surely the main role of the Department of Regional Development is to support the development of thriving towns and communities in regional WA. Recently I happened across an observation from 2005 by the late Malcolm John Bryce AO – “Telecentres Today - Telecentres have evolved into a far broader role as technology driven service delivery, capacity building and information/knowledge hubs”. The same continues to be true today – truly something for the government to be very proud of.

I implore you to ask some of your regionally based constituents just what sort of difference their Community Resource Centre makes to them in their business, their town, and their life. I would also like to invite you to come and see just what goes on in our CRCs – you’d be welcome to visit us in Quairading anytime.

MORNING TEA FOR MELANOMA Ambassador Bonnie Stacey raising funds

T

hank you to the friends and family who travelled to Perth for Bonnie's Morning Tea for MelanomaWA. Many of you have been supporting us for four years helping to raise in excess of $10 000 in that time.

All funds raised go towards research and to create awareness of melanoma, the most common form of cancer among 15-39 year olds in Australia.

Bonnie is an ambassador for MelanomaWA and spreads the message to young people, delivering high school presentations about risk factors associated with melanoma and the importance of having skin checks.

This year we raised $3849, we would like to thank the Quairading Co-op for once again sponsoring the door prize, kindly organised by Christine Hadlow.

Thanks also to Donna and Colin Hayes for sponsoring the awesome champagne package for the third consecutive year, Rebecca and Scott Powell for their continued sponsorship and also Nana (Beryl Stacey) for

donating a raffle prize. This year CBH sponsored a major prize, a weekend away in Yallingup, we thought it was great they saw fit to support a farmer's daughter. A special thanks to the lovely ladies from the golf club who sent donations with Shauna Stone on the day.

But wait, there’s more – our newest piece of equipment, a wide format printer, drew much attention when participants realised its capabilities – pop in to find out more.

The CRC was excited by the enthusiasm and preparedness of all visitors to sign a template letter to be sent off to the Premier McGowan in support of no funding cuts for CRCs. Some visitors were also very happy to be a part of creating short videos to highlight the value of CRCs the following week.

After the exhaustive tours (and associated conversations) everyone enjoyed more chat over drinks and nibbles on the front lawn.

QUAIRADING BELLES Written by Tamara Spark

T

he opening game of the season reminded us all why netball is a winter sport; it was nearly 100 degrees out! (80 Fahrenheit tops… maybe, but this sounds far more impressive and makes me feel less precious). There was a dewy glow awash the faces of the Belles and no doubt the early stages of under boob sweat secretion before we’d even stepped on court.

We have a couple of new faces this season; doubtless blissfully unaware we were facing up to the essentially unchanged reigning premier side of 2017, the Cunderdin Magpies. I was unfortunately not spared by ignorance and prepared myself for a potential thrashing….but it didn’t come. We were slow to our feet and unfortunately let Cunderdin set up a significant lead in the first quarter, 17 vs 5, we came back strong in the second quarter 5 vs 9 to us, 15 vs 8 to Cundy in the third. Then we dug deep for the 4th and final quarter and pipped them by 1 goal 11 vs 12. Comparatively to last year …this is not a thrashing! Cunderdin were known to beat most teams by no less than 30 goals, sometimes up to 60. Well done to the Belles for giving Cundy a competitive game and well done to Cundy for showing up strong as expected.

The first game is always a little shaky as you are still finding your feet and learning your team mate’s quirks. Thankfully for the Belles this year we have had a great pre-season warm up under the encouraging and professional leadership of our cocoaches, Candace ‘Candy’ Burchell and Kelsie Squiers. I feel their experience and skills will make all the difference to our performance this year.

Dall, your fair and just umpiring of our first game was hugely appreciated! We’ll keep you if that’s ok?

I am certain the entire town needs to be thanked for their generous support of our street stall on Saturday 7 April in front of the Co-op. This foray into baking was more stressful to my body than the first game of the season but we had a very successful and enjoyable morning with the Quairading community.

One last thank you to the supporters on the day and the Belles themselves, your encouraging side line cheers were uplifting and helped us finish the game strong (for such a little person Hoppy you can make some noise!)

I set out with great intentions to make March a booze-free month. I told everyone about it—even the local media—and seriously believed that I would get through whatever life threw at me that month without having to reach for the bottle. However, on the second last day of the month, FOMO caught up with me. My partner had a house warming party and I just couldn’t stand missing out. I’m told it was a good night. Anon.

Confessions of a Nanna about the Tooth Fairy My Granddaughter always seems to have a sleepover at my house when the tooth fairy was due. On one particular sleep over there was a storm at night and the power went out.

In the morning I went to check on my Granddaughter. The Tooth Fairy had left the money and also the teeth!

My Granddaughter started to wake up so I picked up the teeth and threw them on top of the cupboard. A few weeks went past and my Granddaughter came for a visit. Not thinking, I asked her to get a chair and get me a dish down off the cupboard. Next thing she was yelling and screaming and crying. I thought there must be a spider. She was yelling out “My teeth are up here! You and Mum have been tricking me. There isn’t a Tooth Fairy!

You and Mum don’t tell me the truth”.

I said “Yes there is a Tooth Fairy, remember there was a big storm? The Tooth Fairy’s wings would have gotten wet and heavy so she couldn’t carry the teeth”.

My granddaughter just looked at me and never said a word. I put the tooth in a trinket box and the teeth are still there because the tooth fairy couldn’t find them.

Last month the children decided what they wanted to do. We asked all of the children what they wanted to play with and make during the month. Monster trucks and painting were very popular.

Miss Catherine made a monster truck sensory bin with sand, PVC Pipe, cars and monster trucks which the children loved, as soon as they woke from rest time they asked to go straight back out to play with it!

The children also participated in foil painting and puffy painting. We had never tried either of these before but they were a great success. Foil painting is also mess free and great for little ones.

We ended the month with our Easter activities and lots of chocolate! The children made Easter hats and found their eggs hidden amongst shredded paper. The older children made Easter chocolate for everybody using chocolate melts and silicone moulds.

To make puffy paint mix all ingredients together until your mixture is puffy.

We found squeezing the paint out of bottles worked really well and gave the children more control.

Foil Painting.

Place foil down on a table and tuck under to keep it still.

Paint on the foil using lots of colours Place a piece of white paper/card on top of the painting and carefully press Lift paper off and you will see your paint has now transferred onto the paper.

s blokes we are all guilty of just wanting to get the job done and sometimes throw our bodies on the line without ever considering possible consequences. We see this with both young and old blokes alike, and injuring our back is one possible consequence. In fact, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare suggest that 70% – 90% of the population will experience lower back pain in some form during their life.

A neglectful attitude is something else a lot of blokes are guilty of and this attitude can exacerbate many health conditions. This is a common attitude that underpins the often unspoken but hardwired attitude that “I am a warrior” and “it will not happen to me”. How many times have you heard a bloke experiencing pain say, “she’ll be right, I’ll see how it goes?” and puts up with his issue for weeks, months, and even years. If we’re lucky we do 5 minutes of stretching and remember to sit up straight for the rest of the day, but that’s about as far as it goes.
