From the Editor I get that the Gregorian(?) calendar is a complex beast, and is nothing but a construct, but a short 28 day month really catches me out every single year. It’s too short. Deadlines come around too quick and surely there’s a better time of year for a shorty? I don’t know. Bring on the next leap year, am I right?

Over the last month, maybe six weeks, we at the Quairading CRC have assisted over 60 community members (of all ages and abilities!) sort out their proof of vaccination and get ServiceWA app in working order—or get an acceptable certificate printed. It’s a puzzlingly complex process that we agreeable members of society are expected to decipher easily—so if you’re still out there struggling with it yourself, or are overwhelmed at the sheer thought of it, please let us help you. Tamara & I have become somewhat of a set of experts and we’d much rather spend an hour guiding you through it than have you getting more and more frustrated, and be in a position that you’re not able to present your proof of vaccination when needed. CRCs across the state are bending over backwards to help their communities with these tasks (luckily we’re wildly flexible!) but as yet neither the State or Federal Government are funding this essential service. So, in exchange for our time, expertise, humble kindness and a cuppa if you time it right, we’re encouraging a donation for our time (bearing in mind our normal hourly assistance or desktop publishing rate is $40 per hour).

We’re hosting our second run at Good Grub Social Club in just a couple of weeks on Wednesday 9th March from 12pm here at the CRC. This lunch event is open to anyone and everyone in need (or want) of a good meal, some midday conversation and maybe some afternoon board games or cards. We want to encourage community connections and general wellbeing, what better way to do so than with good food and good company!

We’d especially love to encourage new residents to town to come to both Good Grub Social Club and Welcome to Town Sundowner the evening after! From what we hear, the property market has been hot and many local businesses have welcomed new staff recently—so we’d love to shout you all a cold beer or a fruit punch and some nibbles, and have a chat about what’s brought you to Quairading! Likewise, locals and long-time blow ins are encouraged to join us too for a mingle with the newbies and to help us share all the important local info with them.

Another new service available at the CRC is the access to Food Bank hampers.

Through the CRC network we’ve got hold of the first delivery of x10 hampers which have slowly been getting out to those in need. The plan is that we’ll get however many boxes each month that we can show community demand for. So, please pop in and see us at the CRC to pick up a hamper. They’re $5 each for about $30 worth of non-perishable groceries. There’s no criteria and no judgement when accessing these hampers, we’ll just record your name and the number of people in your household so we can accurately increase or decrease our ordering each month.

The Quairading CRC acknowledges the Noongar Balladong people as the Traditional Custodians of the land we live, work, play and build community on and pay our respects to Elders past and present.

I hope you enjoy all the great reads and updates in this edition of the Banksia Bulletin. Of course I’m never satisfied and I’d love to see even more content, articles and photos from more local businesses, clubs and individuals. So if you’ve got a story or a message or a promotional notice to share, please do. I’ll take care of the formatting, the proof reading and even the typing if you need me to—you just pull some words together. And snap a photo!

Story Time is back!

Written by Kate Walker Our first Community Storytime was held at the CRC on Monday morning and the room was buzzing with excited little people! Meg Boyle, our guest presenter from York Library’s Story Time, absolutely captivated the seventeen babies and toddlers (as well as their mums and some grannies!) with plenty of rhymes, songs, stories and craft.

Our Storytime session was followed by some morning tea and a visit in the Toy Library which has recently had a makeover and is brimming with toys for all ages. The morning’s excitement and fun while being totally immersed in the learning of early literacy skills was wonderful to see– we are so excited for next month’s session on March 21st. All families with children aged 0-4 welcome to attend!

Huge thank you to the CRC for organising Story Time – the youngest members of our Quairading community will benefit so much from this monthly event! And thank you to Janet Hall for these photos!

FOOTY TIPPING The club is doing AFL tipping this season $25 per person maximum spots available is 50. Prizes each week for highest tipper and then a first, second, third and last place. Prize money will depend on how many people enter. Plus a season finish party (BBQ and drink on entry). Sign up and payment due before Round 1 which starts on the 16th of March, all tips need to by the first game of each round or lowest points will be allocated.

Well after years in my head and months of planning and preparation, we have finally opened!

My name is Janine and I am the proprietor of a new business in town called The Maker’s Keep.

Set between the Pub and the Co-op, The Maker’s Keep will sell art, gifts and wares carefully created to celebrate Local, Wheatbelt, West Australian and Australian artists, artisans and makers. There is lots of talent and creatives on show, including many from right here in Quairading!

I will be introducing them as the months go by.

We will be open Thursday and Friday from 10 am – 4pm and Saturday from 9am—12pm (subject to change). We will also open for extended hours during the busier tourism season to welcome guests to town.

I am lucky enough to be supported not only by my family but also the lovely Shondelle, who you will see regularly in the shop. We hope to make this an amazing little business that brings people some joy and inspires them to get creative!

Oh it is soooooo good to have Loosies open after our break. Rocky, Sharon and Robyn are refreshed and raring to go. In store we have new fabrics, pattern, and ideas. For the remainder of February there is 20% off everything in store excluding new fabrics and patterns.

As well as 2022 being the Year of the Tiger, (and some of us having significant birthdays), let’s make this year the year of completing all those PHD’s (Projects half done).

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm It is with great hope (I am an optimist) that I say GOODBYE to February. Surely the beginning of March will see some cooler weather come our way!

There has been no relief from the high 30s all through January and February which means that plant roots will take some time to recover and allow plants to move from survival mode to growth mode. I expect that most of March, if we have lower temperatures, will see trees and plants generally recover very slowly and only after a decent rain event will there be any sign of growth.

It’s time to…

March marks the traditional beginning of autumn, however, the first nations people knew it as the Second Summer because although March nights were cooler and there was a generally cooling trend during the month, the days could still be hot and the chance of a tropical low bringing rain lessened as the month progressed. In our area, autumn as we traditionally know it, does not start till April when we hope to see that long awaited break in the season. So this first month of autumn is for me the planning month. It is the month I start putting in seeds for winter vegetables, although I must admit I have already started with some small pots on the kitchen windowsill. I start pouring over Garden catalogues for spring bulbs and visiting nurseries to buy tube stock plants and seedlings which I can pot-on and harden off before they are put into my garden. It is a great time to choose new roses because often the autumn flush of blooms is better than in spring. I also look for bargains because with the turn of the season, many summerfruiting and flowering plants such as stone fruit trees and Bougainvilleas are reduced in price to make way for new season plants. These reduced plants are perfectly healthy and ready to plant when the weather permits. Autumn is a season filled with hope and inspiration. It is the season when everything is promised and everything is possible.

Harvest – March sees the last of the stone fruit ripening at Eaglewood Farm. Goldmine and Fantasia Nectarines have started already and the O’Henry and Golden Queen peaches will be ready very soon. In the veggie garden we still have zucchini, tomatoes, basil, egg plant, capsicum, onion chives, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, snake beans, lemon grass, curry leaves, oregano, mint, sage, chillies, water melon, rock melon, rhubarb, and silver beet. Parsley is struggling but has set seed and we’ve picked the first of our finger limes also a few grapes and figs. The almond trees have been very productive this year with the first of the trees to shed the outer skins yielding about two kilos of nuts.

Sow – seeds of winter veggies can be sown either in trays like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and fennel or where they are to grow like parsnips, swedes, beetroot and carrots.

Again it is best to wait until the possibility of days over 30 degrees has passed. The seeds of these root vegetables are generally small and are to be kept constantly moist so it helps if the rows are covered with hessian or shade cloth until the seeds germinate and even after if overhead shade isn’t available.

Things to do – I already mentioned some of the enjoyable things I do during this time of the year, however, there are chores to be done also. Give hedging plants a trim and also fertilize them. Take cuttings of camellias, fuchsias, hibiscus, hydrangeas, grevilleas, correas and don’t waste the trimmings from the hedging plants, they can also be made into cuttings.

STOCK STOCK STOCK COVID, floods and fire have started influencing our supermarket stock availability! We’ve been lucky that we predicted COVID affecting our stock levels and have been ordering and carrying excess stock to ensure we, as a community, could survive. Visiting a few supermarkets over the last 3 weeks (Coles, Woolworths, ALDI) their were aisles completely empty. Our team have done extremely well to have stock on our shelves.

Tanya Fairhead and Wicked have had the massive task of managing our excess stock! Tanya sourcing and ordering and Wicked managing the pallets of excess stock, filling shelves and managing dates.

Tanya has and continues to seek out independent suppliers (eg. we cannot get cat food, bleach, rice ect) so, she has found an independent supplier we can source from. It may cost a bit more but we have it on the shelf.

I thank these girls every day, they go above and beyond! So, if you see the girls in the shop congratulate them on the awesome job they’ve done and continue to do!!

On behalf of the community, we would like to welcome a few new staff members to our Shire team.

I’ve been working for 38 years in Local Government with roles in York and the Goldfields region What are you most looking forward to in your new role or life in Quairading? Working with the community and Shire staff to hopefully make a positive difference to Quairading.

What’s one project or task you’ve been most proud of in your working life?

Redevelopment of Avon Park in York What’s your favourite travel spot? Anywhere with a good beach, good food and cold beer.

What is your favourite type of cuisine or meal you love to eat? Anything from Bid & Tucker, North Fremantle. One of my sons is a chef there.

Melissa-ann Ogden, Customer Service / Front Counter What did you do before joining our Shire staff? Manager of IGA, Mt Lawley before my family moved to Bruce Rock What’s your favourite travel spot? Dunsborough What is your favourite type of cuisine or meal you love to eat? Pizza!

Marg Harry & Noel Coyne, Caretakers - Quairading Caravan Park What did you do before joining our Shire staff? We managed a Discovery Holiday Park Melissa in Perth. Prior to that, we were based in Onslow for 4 years managing a 400 room combined FIFO/Tourist park.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role or life in Quairading? Promoting Quairading to WA and Interstate travellers, enjoying a less stressful/hectic lifestyle.

What’s one project or task you’ve been most proud of in your working life? Through work and outside of work, assisting with fundraising for a number of Charities (Rural Aid, Beyond Blue and Variety Kids) and bringing awareness to those charities.

What’s your favourite travel spot? Anywhere in our own backyard (WA and Australia).

There are so many wonderful places to visit. We have a soft spot for Albany (as we are both originally from there) which has some of the most beautiful coastline in the world.

Marg has been actively reaching out to new Caravan Clubs to entice them to come stay and play in Quairading and they will actively be encouraging caravan park guests to Shop Local and support our small business. Helen was awarded as our 2022 Citizen of the Year at our Australia Day Breakfast in January. Her award is in recognition for her tireless enthusiasm and participation in Community Groups and Activities within the Quairading over many years.

Also receiving a Recognition of Achievement were: Quairading Agricultural Society – In recognition of the Society’s 100th Agricultural Show in October 2021.

Claudia Caporn – In recognition of your Fine Arts Photography and being an Awardee of the Minderoo Foundation Artist Fund Britt Hadlow – In recognition of her Outstanding Achievements in winning the Eastern Districts Rural Ambassador Competition in Koorda and representing the Eastern Districts at the Rural Ambassador State Finals.

BABY SWIMMING PROGRAMME 2022

The pool has been a hive of activity on a Sunday afternoon for the last six weeks as some of our smallest residents undertake their swimming lessons! The babies (and teacher Tash from Just Add Water Swimming in Northam) have been especially grateful for the warmer temperatures in the leisure pool thanks to our fantastic new heating system. We have 36 participating swimmers, enjoying weekly lessons, which we were able to launch with funding received under Royal Lifesaving WA’s Access and Inclusion Program.

KWIRRADING KOORT – COMMUNITY PARK

I’m sure word has got around town that we’ve finally been approved for funding from Lotterywest. Wahoooo!!!! Their contribution will fund a significant portion of the total project budget with money also coming from Council, a community donation (thank you former Rural Youth Club members!) and the Phase 3 of the Federal Government’s Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Program. This means we can finally move ahead with the project. Green for Go! Our next step is to finalise all the design drawings and then head out to find a Lead Contractor. We’re hoping the bundle of documentation and specifications will reach bidders in the next few weeks. They’ll have a few weeks to respond and then we’re into the evaluation process but we’re down to our last few hoops to jump before you’ll see some action on the site.

In the meantime, we’ve started the applications with Wester Power and the Water Corporation to get water, sewage and electricity connected to the site. Hopefully this will be a smooth process but I’m not holding my breath opting for crossing my fingers instead.

We’ve been working with Ecoscape Australia to develop the space and play experiences for the Park. They’ve been involved in some fantastic playground projects around WA with expertise in landscape architecture, environmental science and spatial development. Other examples of their work include Cantonment Hill Park in Fremantle; the Rottenest Island Interpretive Trails and Bilya Kard Boodja Lookout in the City of Belmont.

Having a design first enables the Shire to compare apples to apples when it comes to the construction bids as we’ll have certain items (such as the exact items of play equipment we, as a community, want) specified in the plans. I’ve been assured that it’s an approximate 12 weeks construction timeframe so once things are up and moving, the park will be up and going fast.

A few other things I’m working on while waiting for the designs to be finished is a kinetic wind sculpture as our entry statement. Grant Hobbs is an artist from west of Beverley who will be constructing four large wheels. They’ll be supported on poles and will move in the slightest of breezes. Although they’ll be one of the last things to be installed, I can’t wait to see what they’ll look like. You’ll also have noticed that the line marking has happened in the CRC Carpark. I made sure the bays were nice and wide and they are also long enough for trailer / RV or caravan parking in the central aisle. The In & Out entries from Parker Street remain the same.

Open letter to the Quairading Community from Helen Fraser I would like to take this opportunity to formally respond to the Quairading community regarding the Citizen of the Year Award.

I had actually written some notes to say on the 26th of January, but found myself overwhelmed and unable to see any words. As a result I missed out several important points I would like to acknowledge. So bear with me as I remedy that, the next extract in italics is what I should have said on the day…..

Kaya….. I’d like to acknowledge the Ballardong Noongar people, the traditional custodians of this beautiful land on which we stand….. A land we all call home - Quairading.

From the moment I arrived here in 2005 to work at the school I have felt welcome. I loved the sense of community that immediately enveloped me and the inexplicable feeling of coming home.

I was captivated by positive individuals who worked tirelessly to support, improve and build their community. People who just got on with volunteering in so many capacities, they ran events, fundraised, took official roles, organised people, advocated for those who needed it, or just gave their time…. selflessly and without any recognition, things just got done with no fuss….. and I was inspired. Looking around today I see many of those very same people who inspired and motivated me all those years ago.

I have the privilege to belong to some incredible groups and organisations all focussed on developing and improving Quairading in whatever capacity they have, amazing groups such as Rotary, the Ag Society, Curtain Raisers, Quairading District High School and the Nationals WA. These groups are run by passionate and hard-working people…. to all of those members I want to say….. “you are the backbone of this community and my good friends…. ”Thank you for all your efforts” I also belong to an incredible partnership, to my husband who has put up with endless evenings of planning, discussions, meetings and computer work, to the shoulder-offering tower of support in my life ‘Bill Fraser’ Thankyou!

I would also like to salute those that have received this award before me. I apologise as I only have data from 2013. This includes people like Noel Stone, Mary Stacey, Barb Simpson, Jack Wilson, Phyllis Brown, John Hards, Jo Hayes and Rowlie Mellor. I feel honoured to be in truly lofty company.

I am both honoured and humbled to be standing here as the recipient of this Award for 2022.

To the Curtain Raiser’s Committee that nominated me, to all Shire Councillors, Staff and CEOs Graeme Fardon and Nicole Gibbs for the magnificent gift of the Australia Day breakfast and this Award, Thankyou.

Since that day I have received many letters, emails and cards of congratulations…… I have also been acknowledged in person and had many phone calls wishing me the best, even seen my name on the messages in the main street under the clock… I appreciate all your good wishes. The fact is very cIear however, that I could not have achieved these things if it were not for the talented and dedicated teams I am a part of, they too deserve the accolades…… here they are: PAGE 44

Curtain Raisers – A terrific troupe of talented musicians, singers, actors and entertainers, who along with a backstage crew of costume designers, seamstresses, lighting and sound experts, prop builders, choreographers and painters, put on a major play every two years to entertain and raise funds for the community. Performers rehearse twice a week for many hours, no-one is paid, they are all volunteers, and the performances are always well received, funny and very entertaining. This dedicated group of thespians has donated many thousands of dollars to individuals, groups and projects to the community.

Rotary – A mighty small group of quiet achievers who are dedicated to raising funds to the less fortunate or the youth of Quairading by offering improvement programs for individuals and donating to organisations such as the school, Play Group and the Youth centre. They run an annual tree planting event planting 10,000 seedlings. Have had rotary Exchange students from all over the world staying and vice-ver sa many of our young people have travelled to another country on exchange. Rotary run Street Stalls, Raffle events, Quiz Nights, Tree Planting weekends, free tests for the elderly and run a pet cemetery.

Ag Society – This group just recently managed to achieve their 100th Agricultural Show, receiving an Australia Day award recognising this significant achievement. Since its inception by Quairading pioneers 108 years ago, the Ag Society has weathered 2 World Wars, the Great Depression, changing technology and Covid delays. All to bring together an annual Show with agricultural equipment, displays, sideshow, food, fashion, activities, livestock, competitions and reunions.

Q District High School – The dedicated staff at this amazing school have supported me and the various groups I back in so many ways. Through activities such as P&C meal catering, welcoming overseas Exchange students and accommodating disruptions during tree planting with Rotary. By being tolerant of upheaval and chaos during Ag Society preparations and spending hours helping with setting up. Or by simply supplying coffee and moral support when Curtain Raisers participants are sleep deprived and exhausted during rehearsals.

Nationals WA – A very active and dedicated political group that advocate for facilities, funds and political changes that advance issues and political policies that affect regional WA and Quairading. The Nationals WA has a Quairading Branch that meets to discuss issues of importance, providing regular input to State Council meetings and recently presented at a State Conferences.

I would like to conclude with a plea to ask everyone to volunteer in some way, however little time you have, please just do it. Your time will make a difference and is always appreciated…to receive this prestigious award is evidence of this fact.

It is no secret that when you volunteer you always gain more than you give…. and the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.

Report on Skeleton Weed Activities Avon South Local Action Group | Brian Kimber, LAG Coordinator | 18 February 2022 The Avon South Local Action Group The Avon South Local Action Group is one of seven Skeleton weed Local Action Groups (LAGs) in WA which assist in the detection and control of skeleton weed. This LAG was commenced in 2020 in response to local landholder concerns regarding skeleton weed in the Quairading, York, Beverley and Brookton Shires. It is a fully incorporated, not-for-profit association, which received operational funding from the Grains, Seeds and Hay Industry Management Committee (GSHIMC). This committee evaluates each application and then grants funds depending on requirements. It can be viewed as returning growers levy contributions back to the industry to be utilised where most needed.

All financial governance of our group is carried out by the Shire of Quairading to ensure all monetary spending is auditable in line with Government expectations involving public spending. They are very good supporters and advocates of the Avon South LAG. Skeleton weed - New Finds There have been 12 new properties found so far this year involving 23 new paddocks. The majority of these have been within the Shire of Quairading. Whilst this may seem to be a great amount to most, these infestations have most likely been present for some time and have only just come to light due to the LAG increasing skeleton weed awareness along with a more organised method of searching by dedicated search contractors. Local landholders are increasingly self-reporting infestations which is evidence that landholders are listening to information and advice provided.

The LAG has a great deal of information and resources on hand available to landholders, which can be requested by contacting Brian Kimber, Avon South LAG Coordinator.

Searching for skeleton weed Searching of infested sites is being carried out by registered search contractor Josh Bateman of York who covers the Avon Zone area. Josh was appointed as part of a tender panel contract by the GSHIMC. Josh is in his second year as our local contractor and has proven to be very effective and attentive. The search season commences from mid-November through to the end of March each year, as skeleton weed is a summer growing weed, and bolts to seed, making it easier to detect.

It should be mentioned that landholders are advised to check paddocks following harvest, and before introducing livestock, and to follow up again a few weeks following their removal as browsed plants make detection difficult.

Apart from traditional searching methods, it is further complemented by UAV searching, also contracted by the GSHIMC. Although this method is still in a trial basis it is proving to be quite useful and less intrusive than ground crews. All UAV detections are ground truthed for verification as a matter of course.

Other activities of interest The GSHIMC has funded a Research Program headed by Mr John Moore, Research Scientist and assisted by technical staff from DPIRD Albany Office. John has many years of experience in chemicals and agronomy, and we are very fortunate to be able to secure his expertise. Research into skeleton weed is a very important aspect of the Skeleton Weed Program. The research will focus on:  New and present chemical control of skeleton weed.  Alternative control measures including microwave treatments.  Biotypes and distribution of skeleton weed. This involves collection of plant specimens by field staff, having these analysed for DNA, and then using that information to develop further biological control options for skeleton weed.  Monitoring growth and biological information using time lapse photography, to fully understand life cycles and growth patterns of skeleton weed.

Warrior Wellbeing Decision Making Under Pressure We make decisions every single day, sometimes without even knowing it, these are often the easy and simple decisions that are part of our routine of daily life. Decisions that are of a more complex nature, involve more risk, or a decision that must be made under challenging circumstances can certainly cause us and those around us a bit of stress … this is normal!







Ash Wednesday is on Wednesday, 2nd March and as such marks the beginning of the Christian Season of Lent. Once a season during which people were prepared for baptism on Easter Day, Lent is characterised by opportunities for selfexamination, penitence, self-denial, study, and preparation for the great season of Easter. In solidarity with the baptismal candidates being instructed in the Christian faith, the whole Christian community was invited to join them in the process of study and repentance, the extension of which over forty days would remind them of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness.

Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence; from the Middle Ages it became the custom to begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross, the ash have been made from burning last year’s Palm Crosses. During Lent, churches are kept bare of flowers and decoration and the Gloria in excelsis is not used.

While there are many devotional exercises which may be used during Lent “The Stations of the Cross”, made popular in the West by the Franciscans after they were granted custody of the Christian sites in the Holy Land, are the best known.

At St Faith’s Anglican Church, Quairading, there will be an Ash Wednesday Eve service with Imposition of Ashes on Tuesday, 1st March at 5.30 p.m. while a Service of Stations of the Cross will take place at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 6th April.

Other services for the month of March are Sunday, 6th March 9.00 a.m. First Sunday in Lent - Eucharist Sunday, 13th March 9.00 a.m.
