FROM THE EDITOR Thank you so much to all those who emailed, wrote or called to generously offer their thanks, encouragement, stories and feedback in response to the personal opinions I shared last month regarding January 26. Some short comments on a huge and complex issue have sparked many a conversation within our community. However, in the glorious benefit of hindsight, I understand that I selected the wrong forum to share opinions that were my own, and not necessarily that of the Banksia Bulletin or the Quairading CRC Management Committee— and for that I do apologise. Moving on forward; we’ve got a huge month ahead - right after we kick it off with a cheeky long weekend! We’re hosting a clay mug building workshop with visiting artist Kaitlyn Elsegood on Sunday 7th March - if you fancy yourself a DIYer, or just want to get your hands dirty, get in touch to book your spot! All details on page 13. Later that week (on Thursday 11th), we’re throwing a “Welcome to Town Sundowner” here at the CRC to help anyone who might be newish to our community to connect with others and with local info. Anyone newly living, working, playing, etc, whatever, in the area is very welcome to come along - as are all you friendly and knowledgeable long time locals. Plus, if you’re feeling like you already need some down time, our ‘Creative & Meditative’ afternoon with Janet Robertson from Nourishabley on Saturday 20th might be right up your alley!

Shoutout to the new signage and window decals at the Quairading Co-op, I can see lovely fresh capsicums all the way across the street and I think it’s absolutely fantastic. I’m excited also to see the new road layouts with changes currently in progress all the way down Heal St there’s some handy info and an update from the Shire on that project on page 29. Also! Big thanks for all the responses to the quick survey that you may have seen last week if you read the Banksia Bulletin online. Sometimes it can feel like we’re just typing out into the big void when we’re publishing the Passion Sheet and Banksia Bulletin week and month in, week and month out. We’re very happy to see lists of great ideas for content we can start creating and lots of “keep doing what you’re doings”, so that we shall! Bring on March. Jill. Quairading Tennis Club News Wow! What a day was had on Saturday the 20th Feb. 36 Visitors from the Melville/Palmyra Tennis Club graced us with their presence, 24 players and 12 who just came to watch as we battled it out on the courts for the coveted Wilson/Squiers Cup. Formally a competition run between South Caroling Tennis Club and MPTC, it has been in hiatus for 14 years, but with the drive and dedication of our illustrious President, Grant Mills and Chris Wilson of MPTC (Kylie Squiers’ dad), the competition was given a new lease of life. The day kicked off at 10am after the bus load of Perthites arrived and settled after some scrumptious locally provided morning tea. 8 rounds of tennis were played so that everyone was able to get in at minimum of 4 sets. At end, individual scores were calculated as well as team scores which was to produce the outcome of the day. And the winners were….. Quairading Tennis Club 177 games, defeating MPTC 156 Many, many thanks to our locals and not so locals (Meckering) for making this day a great day. 22 ‘local’ players was an amazing turnout of players. We hope that these numbers and more will be able to attend our Men’s and Ladies Open Days on Friday March 12th. We would really love to see you there!!

Quairading District High School News...
Starting 2021 with Year 3/4! It has been a super busy two full weeks in Year 3/4! We have started our reading comprehension learning by reading and following instructions. Check out our blue fluffy monsters!
As a class we have learnt that the main idea of a piece of writing comes from the author. We read a poster about healthy lunchboxes during healthy lunch box week. We have started learning about Narratives by reading Tashi by Anna and Barbara Fienberg. It is a hit and will help us understand dynamic characters and imaginative stories. In maths we have started each of our lessons by practicing our quick number skills by playing games with a small group. We revised last week odd and even numbers. These are our chalk houses. Did you know that when you add an odd and an odd number you will get an even ? And if you add an even and an even you will get an even? But adding an odd and even will give you an odd? Check for yourself!

Quairading District High School News... In HASS, we are learning History this term. We have started adding to our knowledge of Noongar culture and the significance of country. As a class we created our own acknowledgment of country with words we thought were significant. ‘We acknowledge the Ballardong boodja that we learn on today. All of us pay our respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are the traditional owners of the land. They have stood, nurtured and walked this land for many thousands of years before us. We will continue to learn from them and care for this land. We would like to respectfully acknowledge all elders past, present and emerging in the future.’ Year 3/4 2021 – Miss Wellham Then we were able to write our own personal acknowledgment for the land that we learn on. The class were very enthusiastic at swimming practice and are looking forward to the carnival on the Thursday 25th February. “We went to swimming, Yay! We did diving off the edge of the pool.” - Chayce Fairhead

A brief history of the Quairading Infant Health Clinic Building Compiled by Jo Hayes – a past President of the Quairading Child Health Clinic Committee
A public meeting was held in the Quairading Road Board’s Hall on Friday 12th July 1940 at 3:30pm to discuss the establishment of an Infant Health Sub-Centre in Quairading attended by 50-60 womenfolk.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm Welcome back to Gardening in the Wheatbelt. Well what a summer it has been! We were lulled into a false sense of security back in November with mild temperatures and even some rain. Then we were hammered with long heat spells in December and January. Then in early February we were tricked into believing summer was over only to be rudely reminded that we still have a month of high temperatures. But now autumn is coming! During March we can start thinking about the next season and the planting possibilities that autumn brings. More about this later … The first meeting of the Gardening in the Wheatbelt Club will be held this Friday 26th February, at the nursery in Quairading at 10am. A few keen gardeners got together way back in November because we thought that there is enough interest in the town and surrounds to start a group which can be called a garden club and we will leave it up to those who are interested to come up with what they want from such a club. For the next three editions rather than a plant of the month we’re going to be looking at sustainability in the garden. TIPS OF THE MONTH 1. Make your own compost. There are many books and internet sites dedicated to making compost, some more complicated than others. From experience lawn clippings and shredded newspaper or even better straw with some added manure, be it sheep, chicken or horse make for really good compost. The problems we have encountered have been related to our very hot and dry summers. The best compost should be hot while it is working. To achieve the required heat of about 60 degrees Celsius the pile should be about 1 metre square, it should be moist to the consistency of a wet kitchen sponge and in summer should be shaded so that the top doesn’t dry out too quickly and finally the pile should be turned about twice per week. Because it is best to make your pile all at once we don’t add kitchen scraps to the compost. The benefits of compost are innumerable. Added to the planting hole of any plant, it allows the active microbes in it to help the new plant establish itself by feeding the developing root structure and then spread into the wider area around it. 2. Start a worm farm. Those previously mentioned kitchen scraps are very welcome worm food. In fact worms will devour just about any food scraps you can give them. Except for onion and citrus in large amounts; we don’t add any to ours at all. The worm farms need to be sited in a shady area and a little water added from time to time according to their needs. If the food scraps are large or very thick like for example the ribs on cabbages it is a good idea to cut these up into small pieces, crushed egg shells can be added and a sprinkling lime can also be added when a lot of material is added at the same time. The tap at the bottom of the farm should always be open and the bottom chamber needs an upturned bowl or plant pot saucer to allow the worms a dry escape in case the tap becomes blocked at any time. Worms are available from the big green shed, or of course from a friend who has a worm farm. Worms produce worm wee which is the liquid that is collected from the tap and worm castings which are found in the second or third chamber. This chamber has had no fresh food added to it for a few months. When it is evident that the worms have done their job these castings can be used sparingly in
the holes for new veggies being planted out. The castings are a super rich sludge from which you will need to rescue worms just by leaving it open to the light and you will find that the worms will migrate to the bottom so that you can scoop up the top of the castings before replacing the chamber to the top ready to add fresh food scraps. The worm wee needs to be diluted to the colour of weak tea before it is used to water and fertilize veggies of any kind. It’s time to… Sow – If you have a shady area where you can start early seeds of winter veggies then this is the perfect time to do that. All the Brassicas and onions seeds can be put in now. However, I must admit that we don’t start many of these by seed simple because these seeds are very small and need special attention to do well. Also many of the root crops like beetroot and parsnips don’t like being transplanted so do better when grown in situ. These can be sown now as long as you can keep them covered with shade cloth until day time temperatures are constantly in the low to mid twenties. Plant – All Brassicas, garlic and chives can be planted towards the end of March but only if you can keep them shaded and well watered during any hot weather we may still be experiencing. Harvest – Even with the lack of water at Eaglewood Farm we have been blessed with a huge amount of food from our orchard and veggie garden. The only underwhelming producers have been the tomatoes. Everything else has been great; we’ve had an abundance of lettuces, egg plants, silverbeet, cucumbers, zucchini, capsicums, corn, water melon, rock melon, rhubarb, apricots, plums, peaches, peacherines, figs, mulberries and almonds. During March the grapes, pumpkins, chillies, snake beans, dwarf string beans and strawberry guavas will be ready also we’ll be harvesting the two late peaches. The summer herbs basil, lemon verbena, curry leaf and tarragon have been plentiful. Things to do – If you trim and fertilise your roses very early in March in just over six weeks you will have blooms going into autumn. Watering remains a constant during March and keeping mulch over roots and shade above are still necessary. It’s a good time to take cuttings from soft wood plants like begonias, coleus and geraniums and hard wood cutting from camellias, fuchsias, hibiscus, hydrangeas and grevilleas. The last word – Gardening is the slowest of the performing arts!

Quairading Sub Centre News January at the Co Op
Michaela Stone, our Chairperson, spent some enjoyable Saturday mornings in January talking to our community about our sub centre, what we do and how rewarding volunteering in our community can be. We also held a free raffle, with the winner being Min Hayes and Marilyn Reidy winning our 2nd prize. Also, an enormous thank you to the community members who kindly gave a donation. As a sub centre we are usually very busy. Our call outs, Inter Hospital and Emergency Hospital transfers are on the increase. However, our volunteers, like our community, are aging. If you are keen, enthusiastic and looking for the next challenge in your life, maybe joining our volunteers at training on the 1st and last Thursday of each month would be as rewarding for you as it is for our Ambulance Officers.
Volunteer Profile: Peter West
In June I will have been an ambulance officer for almost 16 years. In this article I’m am reflecting on what I have learned over these years. I have learned that if you don’t attach the stretcher properly it rolls back and hits the back door. I have learned that if you hit the indicator light with the stretcher handle then the indicator breaks. This also happens if you hit the top lights with the roof of the emergency department at Quairading hospital. Also, if you’ve ever wondered how an ambulance can get into the low height car parks in Perth… Take it from me - they can’t.
I have seen the relief in people’s eyes when we walk in the door. When we arrive they know that help is here. As a clapped out shearer, I have had the privilege of working side by side, shoulder to shoulder with doctors, nurses, paramedics , police and firefighters as an equal. I have seen the work that these people do behind the scenes to make our lives safe and happy. The ambulance service in regional WA is primarily a volunteer service. People in our community volunteer to provide the service so our community can call on someone when they need them the most. Some people dedicate the lives to the service. Some people spend a couple of years then move on. Some people are involved all the time but breeze in and out as their life lets them. As an ambulance officer most of our time is spent just being there when someone needs us, such as helping people get up who have fallen, transporting people to better health care or helping those travelling through our town who have needed an ambulance. We work together so when it comes time for someone who needs help, someone is there. You might be someone who is available any day, any time. Yes - we need you! You might be someone who is only available on weekends. Yes - we need you! You might be someone who is only available on certain times of the year. Yes - we need you! You might be someone who can’t leave at a moments notice, but can do booked commitments like the football. Yes - we need you! You might say, “I only want to be a driver” - that’s OK! We’ll train you because when you go out on a call out , you never go out alone. You are always part of a team keeping our families and community safe.
I have learned that the fear of making mistakes is real. If you are interested in getting involved in any way at I make mistakes every trip I do, but the main thing is to St John WA - Quairading sub centre (and it’s a bonus learn from those mistakes. if you can operate an iPad), further information is available at the volunteering St John change lives I have learned that even if there is only 60 seconds left website: https://stjohnwa.com.au/changelives. at the football, you don’t look at your partner and say,” Looks like we made it through this game okay”. You could also ring myself, Vice Chair/Training Officer, on 0427 454 204 (pawest@bigpond.com) or contact I have learned that there are some amazing people in our Chairperson Michaela Stone on 0429 797 106 this world. They give their time selflessly without (michaelastone2264@gmail.com). seeking a reward. Fellow ambulance officers have inspired me to be not only a better ambulance officer You may also contact the sub centre on Wednesdays but a better person in general. on 9645 0176 quairading.subcentre@stjohnwa.com.au PAGE 43

Warrior Wellbeing Dealing with conflict – Is it as simple as having a little empathy? How often are we in conflict with someone? Conflict can often bring up a broad range of emotions like fear and anger and even the word is often used to describe war or the clashing of opposed interests.
appreciated creating arguments and distance in relationships. Communication breakdown: This is worthy of another article in itself, but effective communication (both hearing and being heard) is vital for conflict resolution. Understanding the differences in male vs female communication styles is also important (not right or wrong but different!) When we are not coping in any area of our life, failure to communicate how we feel is one of our biggest mistakes. Remember communication is the start to the problemsolving process!
Some conflict is a normal part of any healthy relationship, after all we cannot expect two people to completely agree on the same thing all the time. The saying “let us agree to disagree” is not always as simple as it sounds as often conflict is either avoided or not managed in a healthy way. 01 / 02 / 2021 Dear Jill, I felt compelled to acknowledge and thank you for your recent Letter from Editor addressing Australia Day and racism. It certainly did strike a chord with me, and I have enjoyed reading it over many times. I thought you were very brave in sharing your revelation with us, the community, and truly admire that you had the courage of your convictions to put it out there. Your letter will hopefully trigger discussions and help to break down barriers. I have had the good fortune to have close contact with indigenous people over the years. At Oobagooma Station back in the late 60’s, and over the last 20 years in Onslow and Roebourne. They are what I miss most about living back here at the farm – “the people”. We all have racist friends and family, and I believe that most of them have never even met an indigenous person. In October I held a celebration of my husband’s life here at the farm, it was great weekend, with people travelling from as far as the Pilbara to attend. Among the guests were our very close friends, who happen to be Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islanders. Max’s memorial had the Swiss flag flying, and along the base were the 3 Australian flags, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island (most people couldn’t recognize the Torres Strait Island flag, we see it more often in the north). In my eulogy I was able to explain why those 2 indigenous flags were there, and why they meant so much to Max. As the day wore on, it was interesting to see the most unlikely people chatting with my dark-skinned friends. A few barriers were broken down that weekend, and it gave me a lot of pleasure. We have never “celebrated” Australia Day; however we acknowledge it by displaying the 3 flags. At the moment the Australian flag is flying at Max’s memorial, and down the side of the house on each verandah post are the indigenous flags. The first aboriginal person I met was maybe 60 years ago, when Owen Yarran was a shearer here on our farm. In October at the funeral of a neighbour I met Murray Yarran, who was invited to do a “Welcome to Country”, and then I read Jasmine Yarran’s speech at the High School Graduation. What great role models in our community. Thanks again for stepping up to the plate. Regards, Chris Noonan, Balkuling.
