QUAIRADING SWIM MEET SUCCESS Written by Renee Anderson.
After having a huge one hundred and twenty five swimmers register for last Sunday’s annual Quairading swim meet, we all breathed a huge sigh of relief when the day rolled around with near on perfect weather conditions—after battling through the previous years storms. Our visitors rolled through the pool gates to blue skies and the smell of freshly cooked doughnuts and toasties. Swimmers travelled across from Narembeen, Bruce Rock, Merredin, Corrigin, Beverley and Kellerberrin ready for a day in the pool.
Quairading represented well on the day with thirty one competitors, many of whom travelled home to compete. Our kids all got in and had a red hot go in their races and we are so proud of their individual efforts and their willingness to give their best for their team events.
With fairly new records after the redevelopment of the pool, there were quite a few broken over the course of the day- local Keeley Gelmi did her best to raise the bar for future years by breaking several of the Open Women’s events records.
A lot of the locals made a visit to the dais throughout the day and took home a swag of golds, silvers & bronze medals (too many to name individually!). The new bathers were a stand out and it was great to be able to pick out the locals in their flash new digs.
The day was a huge success thanks to the preparation and hard work of members, competitors and volunteers both in the lead up to, and on the day. A huge thanks to you all-it is your sense of community spirit that allows us to host these fabulous days and makes them run so smoothly! See you at the pool!

Jeez, the year is MARCHing on by isn't it! Yet somehow it feels like no more than the usual one month has passed since we compiled the last Banksia Bulletin. I hope the absence has made your heart grow fonder and you're ready to sink your teeth into a fresh new edition of the Banksia Bulletin. Our first event of the year was a really great Back 2 School themed Quiz Night packed with fierce competition and nostalgia-enducing costumes - read more about it on page 29. After a great sauerkraut workshop held last year and the popular demonstrations held in the Lifestyle Pavilion at the Quairading Ag Show - we've got Janet Robertson from Nourishabley delivering another workshop on Saturday 9th March, this time with a hands on kimchi making session! Spots are filling fast, so if you're keen to come along, get in touch with us as soon as poss (flyer on page 15). We've been successful with funding applications for a Bike Week WA event for the third year in a row and will be holding a nature-based scavenger hunt style event "Bike Around The Bush" on Tuesday 19th March - this time in an after-school time slot instead of a Sunday morning. Book your kids, family, partner, mate and yourself in, organise a vehicle to get your bike to the Golf Club car park (if you're not quite up to riding there and back) and turn up with your two dollar entry fee! (flyer on page 21). Word on the street is Saturday 16th March is shaping up to be a ripper morning to spend in down town Quairading. Between a Loose Stitches workshop, the QTTTC Car Park Markets and the Quairading Belles Netball Club's pre-season Street Stall PLUS all the great vibes our local businesses provide, you're sure to have a great morning out - and support a boat load of great causes while you're at it. There's heaps of great reading material in this edition - I hope you can find the time to get through it all. Perhaps during the ad breaks of MAFS (I know y'all are addicted too), maybe whilst you're on the throne (don't pretend like that's not where you get the most reading done) or just at the kitchen table to enjoy your morning cuppa over (I've got no shade to throw about that one, it’s probably where you should be doing your reading). ** NEW ** Patient Assist Handrail Located at the front entry of the QMP Staff and patients of the QMP wish to thank the Shire of Quairading for our most recent improvement. Council have installed an assistance rail for patients entering the practice via the main carpark. A reminder for those patients with severe mobility issues please use the dedicated disabled bay located to the rear of the practice off MacDonald Street. We also kindly remind our patients to please refrain from parking in the doctor’s private driveway. Parking in their private driveway hinders their ability to attend to emergency patients at the Quairading Hospital. Under no circumstance are you to park there. This also includes carers who are dropping off patients. We thank you greatly for you compliance to this matter. Additional charges attached to both Bulk Billing and Private fees for ALL patients. Either Private or Bulk Billing Fees apply when you attend for a consultation. Consumables are items we must purchase for use during a patient’s consultation and this cost must be covered by the patient with or without a Commonwealth concession card and is payable at time of consult. The cost of the consumable to private patients will be billed as a separate item at the time of your consult as it is not covered by Medicare or private health fund. QUAIRADING YOUTH CENTRE Update from Danny Great news!! We have received an amount of $2245 from the Department of Communities. We are going to be scattering fruit trees throughout the grounds. A big thank you to the Cunderdin Agricultural College for their commitment of endless manure for the garden. We are harvesting vegetables now and catching yabbies in our aquaponics. The kids are loving the garden and eating from it. We are hoping to combine some of our activities with Cunderdin. Contact has been made and is in the pipeline.

Our March Open Morning on Wednesday 6th March will continue with our February focus of Caring for our Children. Once again, we are hoping to have Drew Richardson, our Community Paramedic, outline how St John’s cares for your children in the unfortunate circumstance where an ambulance call-out is required. TO QUIZ OR NOT TO QUIZ Written by Tamara Spark
I am sure we’re all aware of the classic stereotypical dynamics in a school class environment and the ‘Back 2 School’ themed quiz night, held this February, was no exception (exempting bullies). We had our back seat bandits, class clowns, misfits, popular kids, nerds/teacher’s pets, new kid… you name it! I could name them but I’m better off letting you make your own assumptions. Some, I’m sure, were there purely for the cause, some are just die hard quizzers, and I personally, was almost entirely motivated by the table nibbles and gin and tonics. Irrespective of your motivations the money raised is going to the proposed new Community Park - I’ll ‘Gin and Tonic’ cheers to that any time! A huge thank you goes out to Sarah Caporn and Peta West for putting together the majority of the question rounds so that the Quairading CRC staff could take a backseat admin role and still participate on the evening. Thanks to Brett Caporn for manning the bar (where were you back when my mind needed lubricating at school?) and to those that helped score and set up the ‘class room’. As with any community event, basically everyone in attendance deserves a thank you so just know that everyone’s attendance and support was appreciated. We didn’t even have to target the teacher’s pets or punish the misbehaved when pack up time came around, all in attendance pitched in. Personally I’m always down for a quiz night and I’m already looking forward to the next, that is after I call my mum and confront her for the lie fed me my entire life that cost my team a question. The overwhelming feedback from the night was that it was fantastic and we need to have more of them! * *Feedback exclusively from the winning team

Refrigeration: After spending months comparing quotes, negotiating, researching, getting tired of managing our existing old (often broken) refrigeration and spending a fortune on electricity a month to keep it all going we have bitten the bullet! We have ordered 11m of new closed-door stand-up fridges and 11m of new closed-door stand-up freezers. This new refrigeration will replace the existing open dairy case (which is currently broken), our existing open freezer (which is on its last legs), the open meat fridges, and the three stand-up freezers (one of which is broken, and the other two which often have ‘holidays’). To say we are excited about this news might be the understatement of 2019! Refrigeration like this doesn’t get bought off a shelf from a store, its currently being manufactured as the Banksia Bulletin goes to print this month- we expect it will be all set up and running in store in the first half of April.
Empty Shelves: You might have noticed that we are in the process of moving stock from the end shelves of each aisle and consolidating it into the rest of the aisle, leaving the end sections empty. These empty end sections will be removed in the coming weeks and we are doing this for two main reasons: 1. We have way more shelving in the store than we actually need, which we then have to spend time and money keeping stocked and neat so the store looks ‘full’. 2. We are working towards renovating the eastern side of the building in the future (still dependent of a few things, which we are working through now). To do this, we will

We are doing our best to manage the community’s investment in The Co-Op, so anything that we sell less than 4 of in a month or customers only buy on sale at a huge loss for the store, we unfortunately will no longer carry.

If you don't like someone else's flag, don't pull it down. Your big idea for your town doesn't require unanimous consent. You just need you and your big idea. Put your idea on a flag, and plant your flag where everyone can see it. People who like the idea will be drawn to you.
OK, but what if you know an idea is wrong? Then here is the one and only Idea Friendly approved response:
Here's the thing: don't tear down anyone else's flag. You don't have to like their idea, but it's not your job to tear down ideas.
And that's the same response you'll give to ideas you think are good. It's always the response to anyone else's idea.
That means not running other people's ideas down. Not throwing out problems and objections and reasons why not.
Because it's better to let people run their own tiny test and learn for themselves than for you to tell them.
We're used to having to convince others their ideas are bad so they'll have to come over and join us and we win. That's not how it works now. You're Idea Friendly. And that means not just that others are friendly to your ideas, but also that you are friendly to everyone's ideas.

Industry Funding Schemes enable agricultural industries to raise funds to address priority pests and diseases at a whole-of-industry level. GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk Welcome to autumn! Hopefully we have all survived, plants and humans that is, relatively unscathed by the dry and consistently warm conditions that have persisted since last December. While the heat spikes have been rare, I don’t remember a summer quite as dry as this one and if predictions are to be believed we have at least two more months of dry to come. Last year we only recorded 350mm on Eaglewood Farm and while it was in good large amounts the soil moisture was quickly depleted with the long periods of over 30 degrees in December and January. Now let’s look for the positives; after one or two more spikes in February we should be getting warm but not extremely hot days in March which as long as you can keep water up to your plants will mean your garden will survive or even thrive.
Plant – a second crop of summer vegetables; plant more tomatoes, zucchini, corn, cucumbers, lettuce, beans and even capsicums and eggplants can be put in especially if they are in front of a north facing wall or fence.
Plant of the Month
Harvest – At present we are harvesting corn, zucchini, lettuce, tomatoes, capsicums, eggplants, carrots, beans are about to start, nectarines are almost finished, one plum tree the Mariposa still has some fruit on it, the O’Henry peaches (my favourite) have just begun, the almonds are almost at the point of splitting their outer shells, there are three types of grapes ready the Italia, Muscatel and the Red Globes and passion fruit. Figs are going to be scarce this year because it has been so dry, I’m so surprised at just how much water a fig tree needs to keep its leaves and ripen the fruit.
Looking around my poor sad garden (we’re on tanks) it was hard to go past the great survivor, the Rose. Of course I could have chosen the rose as plant of the month in September or October when they are all blooming their heads off, but I see the rose as the hero of the garden not only for its beautiful blooms or perfume, because after all that is why it is the most popular plant grown all over the world, but because it is a survivor. In our extremely hot conditions they may not be blooming but given a little love in the form of a good fertilizer with extra potash and a trim, by mid to late March we will have the best flowers ever. I prefer the autumn rose blooms because there is less wind and the cool but not frosty nights mean that the bloom last for quite a few days. It’s time to – look out for the bad bugs which thrive in the heat. One of these is the mite, it used to be known as Red Spider Mite, if your plants look like they have powdery leaves or you see little webs under the leaves then chances are you have mites, or at least your plants do. I use Malathion very sparingly and it is quite effective.
Sow – your own seed for winter crops; cabbage, spinach, cauliflower, bok choi, silver beet, broccoli, spring onions, onions and fennel. Sow these plants in small containers and because they have tiny seeds you will need to keep them moist but not wet as they tend to die from over watering. Root crops are best planted where you want them to grow because they don’t like being transplanted; beetroot, carrots and parsnips can be put in now but I would wait for another month at least before putting in the turnips and swedes.
Things to do – Well needless to say watering, for those of you who have water, is very important at this stage while we wait for it to fall from the skies. Pull any summer weeds before they go to seed and finally in answer to a question from the public, how to deal with Mosaic Virus in roses, well just like in humans there is no cure for plant viruses. Some plants like tomatoes, lettuce, broad beans and sweet peas can be totally devastated by wilt which is caused by a virus; however, in roses it is usually not so bad. What needs to be done is that any affected leaves should be removed and disposed of by putting them in a bag and into the bin. Garden hygiene is most important because these virus are spread by sap sucking insects like aphids and thrips there keeping these at bay and keeping plants growing strongly with competition from weeds will be the best way of not encouraging the viral diseases from spreading. Mr Rourke advised that the Contractors will have access to the area behind the tourist bay and toilets to be

Shire of Quairading President’s Report 2017/18 Again it is with much pleasure that I present to you the Annual Report for the Shire of Quairading for the financial year ended 30th June 2018. Another busy year has passed by with many achievements along the way, but first and foremost it’s been a very challenging year indeed for our CEO Graeme Fardon who had to deal with the many shire issues that arise over and above statutory requirements, whilst dealing with his Wife Sue’s illness and her subsequent Passing in May 2018. On behalf of Council, we pay our respects and condolences to Graeme and his family on this difficult loss and wish him well for the future. This resulted in the Chief Executive Officer taking two periods of Leave during the Year and Council employed Acting CEO’s Mr Neville Hale in October/November 2017 for several weeks and then Mr Allen Cooper in June/ July 2018 Both of these experienced Local Government Officers fulfilled the role in a very professional way indeed and we thank them for keeping Council and Staff on track and on task. Council has progressed with many projects and planning for future projects. The new Works Depot Workshop and Staff Facilities is now complete and we held the official opening in February at the Depot with many local ratepayers accepting the invitation to attend the Opening. This project was first recognised by Council back in 2012 and took many years of deliberations and planning to achieve the final outcome. The old Workshop building was declared structurally unsound and Council had no choice but to proceed with its demolition and to plan the redevelopment. The Project was funded with a combination of a 10-year Loan and funds from Council’s Building Reserve Fund. I am sure you will all agree that the Depot is now a state of the art building which provides an excellent Workspace which is the envy of many neighbouring councils. I thank everyone in making this project come to fruition. The Community Park Concept is developing slowly with considerable research having been undertaken on what features may be included in the Park & Woodlands Area to the West and South West of the Quairading Community Resource and Arts Centre. Extensive
Community Consultation has occurred on the Park Concept and it is expected that the preferred layout and Project Plan will come to Council in late 2018. External Funding will then need to be sourced for this Project to proceed to the next stage. The Quairading-Cunderdin Road Upgrade under the Grain Freight Program, has finally been completed. This has been a major undertaking for this Council and has spanned over 7 years. I thank the then Works Manager Troy Newick and our CEO for having the belief that we would be able to deliver such a major project. The decision to not use the Quairading-York Rail Line came about after a train derailment at Jacobs Well several years ago placing the line, the only Tier 3 line that runs west to Port without the need for double handling of the grain, into “Care and Maintenance”. This decision by the Government and Rail Lessee was very disappointing. The roadworks commenced in 2011/12 and included 21 Km of road widening plus 2 major realignments of the Quairading-Cunderdin Road at both Wackett Road and Cubbine Road Intersections. The local delivery of the Project has brought significant economic benefit to the Quairading and neighbouring Communities with increased employment and utilisation of many Local and Regional Contractors. Grain Freight Funding of $8.06M has been received by Council over the life of the Project. I would personally like to thank the many landholders and road users that were impacted by the Project and the negotiations that took place for this project to come to fruition. Your patience has been valued and on behalf of Council I apologise for the length of time some of these negotiations and construction works have taken to achieve the final outcome of a major improvement to this important road. Moving to the future, the road pavement will come under pressure from the increased tonnages of the large grain vehicles and this has always been a concern for Council. At present we are working with the Cunderdin Shire to lobby for the State Government and Main Roads to be responsible for the cost of maintenance of this road so it will not be a burden on our local rate payers in the future. Shire of Quairading President’s Report 2017/18 continued... WANDRRA As you would be aware one of the major weather events to occur within the District was the significant rainfall which occurred over two periods about a week apart in late January and early February 2017. The rain caused significant damage to our local road network damaging many bridges, floodways and over 90 roads. Damage to our network was so extensive Council decided to have the road network independently assessed by Civil Engineering Consultants and for Roadswest Engineering to also prepare Council’s Submission under the Western Australian Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (WANDRRA). This resulted in a multi-million-dollar Repair Project in the order of $8.3M in value being approved. In addition, Council also claimed the Cost of repairs for three Bridge / Culvert Structures from Council’s Insurer valued at $600,000. Local Contractor Quairading Earthmoving won the tender to carry out the road repair works and Regional Contractor Avon Concrete was awarded the floodway and bridge repairs. The remedial works commenced in August 2017 and it is expected that all works will be completed by early 2019. Once again our Auditor, Mr Greg Godwin of Moore Stephens has completed the Audit of Council’s Financial Accounts for the year ended June 2018. Council has once again achieved a very favourable result with a Clear (Unqualified) Audit Report. The Auditor has previously highlighted the issue of an adverse trend in Council’s Operating Surplus Ratio. Council and the Administration are actively addressing the issue of alternative Revenue streams and ascertaining the required Service levels and Asset Maintenance and Renewal requirements to contain our Operating Expenses. I am pleased to report that this year we are heading in the right direction with the Operating Surplus Ratio but we do need to maintain this focus in the years to come to achieve the Industry Benchmark. Citizen of the Year Award The Citizen of the Year Award took a slightly different tack this year with a Posthumous Award. The nomination came from the Community via Mrs Jo Hayes and Mrs Robyn Richards nominating Mrs Barb Simpson who sadly passed away a little over 12 months prior. When reading out the supporting Nomination documentation it was very clear the extraordinary contribution this Lady had made within our community on many different fronts over many, many years. I am sure you will all agree that this indeed was a very fitting Award to be presented to Barb’s Family and I thank them for their attendance on Australia Day and to Barb’s Husband Rod for accepting the Award. Reconciliation activities have continued during the year with the scheduling of quarterly meetings for the RAP committee. Progress is being made on many issues facing our Community with the aim of better community relations and understanding for all in the District. The Quairading Medical Practice continues to serve the community well under the guidance of our Practice Manager Mrs Debra Stacey in conjunction with Dr Adeleye (Dr Ade) who provides the GP services under a contract. This is a very important part of one of the many services that Council provides for our community and appreciate that the funding shortfall of around $150,000 per year is a cost to rate payers. However, it is extremely vital that we retain this Practice in the District into the future. Every endeavour is being made to minimise the funding borne by the Community through Council. The Strategic Community Plan, Long Term Financial Plan and Corporate Business Plans form part of the many valuable Integrated Planning documents that are required to be prepared and maintained by Council. All of these Planning documents have been revised and updated to reflect community aspirations into the future. This has been quite a lengthy process with extensive research and consultation undertaken to develop and finalise them during the 2017/18 year. Council thanks everyone involved in participating and

providing feedback on the Plans. As funding opportunities change into the future and the seemingly ongoing shifting of State Government parameters, all these plans do come under pressure and are tested. This requires the Plans to be regularly reviewed and adjusted as circumstances and the funding environment changes. Council and Staff also undertook the Workforce Planning Project in 2017/18. The results of the Review of Council’s Organisation and Staffing Structure resulted in some positions being renamed and duties adjusted to better reflect the skills available and the tasks required to be undertaken by the organisation to achieve a greater focus on Council’s Strategic Objectives, and I sincerely thank external consultant Marg Hemsley for providing her independence, expertise and guidance throughout the process. Council’s Grants team is located within the Community Resource and Arts Centre Once again Council employed External HR Consultant, Mr John Phillips to assist Council in the development of key performance indicators (KPI s) for our CEO. This is an initiative previously flagged by Council and has enabled Elected Members and the CEO to work together to reflect on the past year and to clearly define Expectations and Accountability for the year ahead. The Working Group on the Sporting Precinct continue to meet regarding our current Recreation facilities and are developing plans for the future needs in Recreation for Council’s consideration. Council has discussed establishing a Reserve Fund to commence the accumulation of funds when available, to assist towards funding of future Renewal or Upgrade Works at the Greater Sports Ground The Little Rainmakers Childcare Centre continues to run effectively and has a number of parents in the community regularly utilising this very important service. I acknowledge all the staff involved for a very commendable job done caring for and educating many of our younger community members. The Youth Centre under the guidance of Coordinator Danny Marzocchi is also going from strength to strength. Local Government Elections In October 2017, we once again saw our two-year cycle of local government elections where you as the electors get to elect your representatives on Council. 5 Nominations were received for 4

positions on Council. I congratulate the Councillors that have been re-elected and welcome Cr Trevor Stacey and Cr Peter Smith to Council. I would like to thank all nominees, as I firmly believe that if we have to hold elections then that means there is interest from our community and that is very healthy sign. Council farewelled Mr Gary Taylor, our first ever Indigenous community member to sit on Council and I sincerely thank him for his valued contribution to this Community and Shire over the previous 2 years. Council also farewelled our Past Shire President Mr Brian Caporn who completed a very commendable 12.5 years as a Councillor with many and varied roles throughout that time, culminating in being our Shire President for the last 2 years. Brian’s contribution to the betterment of our community has been immense and we thank him very much for his untiring efforts. This year saw a change in the way Council operates its Standing Committees. We now have a Audit and Risk Committee and the Strategic Planning Committee. The Committees meet month about and comprise of all Councillors. These Committees have no delegated authority and therefore cannot make any binding decisions however they make recommendations to be presented at the Full Council meetings. The new structure and format created some challenges, however I believe now that they are operating well and more suited to running our Council affairs more efficiently. I would like to acknowledge the efforts put in by our CEO during this Year. It is not until you get involved in Council that you can really appreciate the many and varied things that a CEO does and is responsible for, with many that we don’t know about. Congratulations are also extended to all Council Staff who once again achieved a very solid year and provided great results for the Community. I also take this opportunity to thank each and every Councillor for their valued service and input in regard to our Community and their oversight of the smooth and effective operation of Council. The following letter is from Reverend Keith Wheeler, Quairading Anglican church minister. Keith visits St Faith’s Anglican Church on the third Sunday of each month at 9:00am. You’d be most welcome to join us and listen to him speak. Dear Church Families, I am Keith Wheeler. I come to you on regular Sundays of the monthR.A.A.F.A. Bull Creek every second and fourth Sunday of the month (10:00am); Quairading every third Sunday of the month (9:00am); Tammin every alternate third Sunday of the month (11:00am) and Northam every first Sunday of the month (10:00am) I am excited by the presence of God and His desire to guide me/us. I want you to experience this too and so much more than that. I want you to have an unbelievable relationship with God in your life. This takes faithful practice and single-mindedness and trust. There is only one way – the way of God’s extreme loving of you and the world. As He says – “I set before you, life and death – therefore choose life”. Brother Lawrence wrote a classic book called: ‘Practice of The Presence of God’. I believe we need to take one more step beyond ‘practicing’ and start trusting/believing that this life is given to us. There is nothing trite about this. Likewise, it is not an intellectual exercise. It is a relational life. Jesus says: “I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and sup with them and they with me.” Ask Him into your life as the boss. Our daughter Joanna has been delivered from methamphetamine use of a number of years. God’s amazing grace and prayer and fellowship and learning and worship has freed her and kept her walking in the right way – God’s way – and not without pain. One other liberating practice was what is called, ‘re-wiring’ – where she would repeat many times over in her mind/speaking positive affirmations – to free herself from the lies she came to believe about her unworthiness – and join herself to God’s view of her – “I love you and give my son to die for you – that is how valuable you are to me, how much I want you and love you”. When I am in the community now, if people share with me a problem they are having, I seek to ask if I can pray for them. I don’t know how God wants to meet their needs. We think we do but God’s ways are so different to ours – but ‘right’ and full of life and love and liberation. I just pray for God’s healing in Jesus name and thank Him….and say amen, which means, ‘let it be’. Begin with God’s ‘finished work’ in Jesus on the cross. Liberating you and me and all who will believe and go on in the Spirit God has poured out and offers to us who call upon His name (and total being – person). “I will give another councillor to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth, who will guide you into all truth.” Keith Wheeler (0417-965-035)

elcome to the 2019 school year. It promises to be busy, challenging, productive and rewarding. Classes started smoothly on the 4th of February with 113 children in the school. Our beginning assembly for the year consisted of introducing our new staff, revising our core values and our expected behaviours. At Quairading District High School we work with QUALITY in our learning, our teaching, in our work; and in excellent attendance. Quality means presenting the best possible version of everything we do. In our class work, the way we present ourselves, the way we speak to people, coming to school every day. NEWS FROM MRS GARRETT IN HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE Have you ever wondered, why a cat always falls on its feet? Did you know, if you spin a ball while it is falling, it will fly? Why do screwdrivers come in different lengths and thicknesses? These and many other questions will be investigated by the High School Science students in Term 1. The study of Physics is all about how and why things occur in the universe. The Year 10 students are exploring the impact of speeding on reaction times when driving a car. The Year 9 students are investigating how sonar depth sounders work and looking into the importance of wearing ear protection when working with loud noises. The Year 8 students are learning about energy in its different forms all around us. They will be designing an energy efficient house suitable for building in Quairading. The Year 7 students will consider the effect of forces on machines and then apply this knowledge to designing robotic systems using the LEGO Mindstorms kits.

The Kindy and Pre-primary class have had an exciting start to the year. We have been focusing on learning about ourselves, our families and looking at different types of farms and animals. We would like to thank Mr Sandercock for the donation of his hay, we love making a mess and cleaning it up too!
In week 3, we have started our Letters and Sounds program. The first sound was the letter ‘S’ and we have looked at lots of words that start with the ‘S’ like snakes, spaghetti, slide and sand.
Recognising and making patterns are important maths skills for exploring numbers and shapes. We have been identifying patterns with colours, shapes and objects and students have created and described their own patterns.

QUAIRADING TENNIS CLUB NEWS We are up and running again after a lovely Summer holiday break for some. Before Christmas saw a small but friendly group of ladies take to the courts on Wednesdays thanks to Sam Brown’s super organisation. It has not really continued on into the new year but I still hold out hope for a resurgence in Ladies Wednesday Tennis as there are quite a few ladies out there who are all capable of hitting a good ball and sharing a giggle and making the most of a morning out, as I said, even just for a chat and a cuppa! Sunday tennis is also back on with threats of seeing new faces and some ‘old’ ones back down on the courts... We are just waiting with baited breath ready for them to grace us with their presence. Everyone is welcome to come down for a hit, a chat and a bit of socialising on a Sunday from 3pm. We would love to see you. Social members are more than welcome at any time and there is always a BBQ following Tennis. This was the case with 4 other towns in the Zone, with harvest and CBH bins open for longer hours taking priority. So again for the first time in Pennant history, the association decided to run the competition in two halves to give those that couldn’t field a team before Christmas the chance to play after. Hence the competition has gone from 4 teams to 7. We have had 3 rounds. A loss to Northam, we had to forfeit to Beverley because we were 2 players down and then on Saturday we had a very hard fought win over York, 13 —11 sets. YAY!! We still have Goomalling, Dowerin and Cunderdin to come and hoping for a few more wins. A busy month for us tennis goers and plenty of variety on offer so please dust off your racquets and joggers and come down for a hit. If you don’t have a racquet, no fear, we do!!! QUAIRADING BOWLING CLUB UPDATE Written by Vincent Hadlow
T
he past month has seen a lot of activity on the green. The men’s singles championship was held a couple of weeks ago and salaams and salutations are extended to Colin Hayes on taking off his 11th championship victory. Runner-up was Stephen Bartlett who played some great bowls to get to the final but just couldn’t find a chink in Chook’s armour. Rod Simpson defeated that perennial plate performer Paul O’Hare in a thriller to take out the plate competition. Both players were locked at 24 shots each (the winner is the first to 25) and it took a couple of fine bowls from Joe to get past the redoubtable Paulo. Well done to all concerned, particularly our generous sponsors Les Anderson and Chris Squiers, organisers Captain Mikey and V/C Jimmy, the ladies and gents who marked and all others who contributed over the two days. The ladies’ singles will be played later in the season. Several individuals have managed to represent Quairading in representative sides over the past month. Colin Hayes, Bill Fraser and Chris Squiers were selected in the East Avon league sides and, from all reports, performed very well with Bill going on to play in the zone competition in Albany. On the ladies’ side, Pam Caporn, Donna Hayes and Marie Killian were picked in the Interzone Pairs a fortnight ago (obviously not in the same team) and they won. Congratulations girls. Great stuff. Pam has also been picked to represent Quairading in the Zone 4’s. Well done to all. Congratulations to the QBC men on winning the East Avon Champion Club trophy for the 2018-19 season. The event was held in Quairading last weekend. Led by Colin Hayes who won the Champion of Champions singles trophy, the pairs team of Stephen Bartlett and Eugene Stone and the fours combo of Vincent Hadlow, David Chandler, Rob Wilson and Russell Stacey, the team managed to pick up enough points to take off this prestigious PAGE 52
award. Well done again to our Captain and V/ Capt, Mickey and Jimmy, and special thanks to the large contingent of our ladies who helped out as umpires, in the kitchen and behind the bar. Added thanks to the guys who marked in the singles. This was a great day for our club. Pennants is back in full swing. The Red men are fighting for a spot in the “A” Division “final three” in what is turning out to be the closest the East Avon competition has been for many seasons. In division 2 the White and Green boys are relatively settled for a run at a finals berth but won’t want to rest on their laurels. Our ladies (Red and White) have both managed to scrape into the finals in what has also been an extremely close competition. Our girls play in the Avon League (this being their first season in this 14 team competition) so what a feather in their caps it’s been. The Red side got into the fifth position by 2 points and the White girls snuck into sixth spot by half a point --- with only seven points separating the top side, Northam Blue, from the sixth spot. Good luck to our ladies. As far as local events go we have been very busy bowlers since the beginning of the year. A bus load of men travelled across to Corrigin for the annual “Corrigin Tour” and, amongst all the shenanigans, Vincent Hadlow, Ray Pozzi, Eugene Stone and Shane Dalton managed to come runners-up. Needless to say, a great day was had by all and thanks to Pozz for organising it. Early in February a couple of big days for the QBC saw the Men’s Invitation day and the Mecca 3’s run and won. 22 teams from the country and the city battled it out at the Invitation Day and 18 teams from all around the place fought tooth and nail for the Mecca prize. Greg Hogg and his boys from the Manning club took out the Invitation Day first prize and Vincent Hadlow, Rohan Hadlow and John Stone took out the prestigious Mecca trophy. not only on these two days but throughout the season. Chook and Donna Hayes, Qdg Tyre and Batteries, Great Southern Fuels, Grain Brokers, RSM Bird Cameron, Paul O’Hare, Qdg Seed Cleaners and Brian and Wendy Taylor sponsored the Invitation Day and John Haythornthwaite very generously looked after us on his Mecca Day. The club sends a hearty congratulations to all the members who put their hands up at busybees and as workers on the competition days. There are too many to mention individually but we can note the efforts of men’s Captain Mikey Grage who, in his first season in the role, has done a fine job organising these days and Greg “Gap” Sinclair (men’s secretary) who does a lot of work behind the scenes for little acknowledgement. Again, our ladies have been magnificent in the kitchen, the bar or just helping out keeping the open days ticking along and all contributors, men and women, should be very proud of their achievements. There have been several mens, ladies and mixed events over the last month both in our own league and in surrounding leagues. These have been well supported by Quairading bowlers with some people coming home with some extra cash in their pockets and some coming home with a carton of beer (for coming last!!). And some people (usually skippers) coming home with absolutely nothing at all except tales of woe concerning how horrible their team played. They (the skippers), of course, were scintillating. (We call some of our skippers “Suitcase” because we have to carry them everywhere!!)

On Saturday the 26th of January one happy little group ventured off down to Pingelly to participate in an Australia Day mixed 4’s event. On arriving they noticed many bowlers milling about the rinks. Strangely, they were all male! “The ladies must be inside staying out of the heat” was one sagacious comment from the passenger’s seat. On making a few discreet enquiries our intrepid foursome was informed that the mixed event was on the following Monday……………………… They went home! March sees the guys and girls head off to the Big Smoke to participate in Countryweek. Everyone is looking forward to the week and some are even looking forward to the bowls. After about eighty years of trying, Quairading BC is still to bring a Countryweek title home in either the mens or the womens events. Maybe this will be the year. Don’t forget our Closing Day will be held on Sunday the 31st of March at 1pm. On a sad note the club has lost one of our most respected members with the passing of Bill Hayes a few weeks ago. Bill was a longtime player, administrator and loyal worker at the QBC. He was President and Captain of our club (at different times) for several years, as well as serving in other areas on committee, was our greenkeeper for 28 years and amongst these tasks he managed to win six Club Champion trophies. Not to mention the many, many pairs, triples and fours club championships he was involved in throughout his career. All this led to Bill receiving a most deserved Life Membership of the QBC. A wonderful contribution indeed.

Shaving Back the Rhetoric About Toxic Masculinity Recently, there’s been much discussion about Gillette’s ad and its portrayal of blokes. It’s not a particularly good ad for selling razors, but the intention was to spark debate, and it has certainly succeeded there. Whilst the intention might be admirable, it’s confusing. In particular, polarizing the group it clearly wants to unite for change.

If the ad is a rallying call to unite, then it shouldn’t alienate those it’s calling to set the bar higher by displaying “The best a man can get”. The admirable traits of masculinity we all strive for, qualities of good character, including discipline, assertiveness, loyalty to a cause, teamwork, protection and care of others, as well as valuing our honourable role as fathers, have been omitted in what is, an overwhelmingly negative portrayal of manhood.
