ACTION ON THE COURTS With a forecast high of less than 30 degrees, 38 enthusiastic ladies took to the tennis courts on Wednesday 21st February for the Ladies Doubles Tournament. Not even a persistent ‘light’ breeze could dampen their joy of playing in such cool conditions. With fellow participants
from Merredin, Narembeen, Northam, Beverley, Mundaring, Roleystone, York and 14 players from Pingelly – it was a day full of lots of chat, a bit of tennis, fine food and heaps of great prizes.
A special thanks went out to those local ladies, who were unable to play, but were generous with either their time in the office and kitchen, donations of food or monetary contribution – our Quairading spirit is alive and well!

FROM THE EDITOR It feels a little late in the game already to be “welcoming” you to 2018, but here goes. Welcome to 2018! You may notice some slight changes—hopefully improvements—in the look and layout of the Banksia Bulletin, and the Passion Sheet. Rest assured they’re not just changes for the sake of change, so please feel free to let us know what you think of them. Our advertisers—who afford us the ability to produce the Banksia Bulletin every month—are spread throughout the publication but also listed in a contents-style list in the early pages. Our aim is to better spread the word about these great local businesses, and assist you—our dear readers—to find a service more easily. We’re also throwing an enhanced focus on locally written content, in the form of articles, reports, columns, confessions and stories. We want to get the creative juices flowing in you all and encourage more people every month to put pen to paper and share their thoughts or expertise. We have a (mostly) great team of typists and editors here at the CRC, so don’t let a fear of Microsoft Word put you off, and the excuse “I can’t spell good” won’t fly around here. We got you. If you’re a woman who is involved in any sort of money-generating business I seriously encourage you to read up on our upcoming event Women’s Business, get keen then grab a mate (not essential) and a ticket and join us on Thursday 8th March. From Dr Brusasco Hello Ladies, This is an update regarding the new PAP smear test which came into effect on 1st December 2017, and also an update on the continued funding for my rural women’s health GP visits to Dalwallinu and Quairading. Rural Health West and I were successful in securing ongoing funding for my regular visits to the Wheatbelt until June 2020 – at which point we will need to re-apply. This is great news and thanks for your support, especially those of you who wrote letters of support J Regarding the PAP smear – it is now called the Cervical Screening Test and the test is performed in the same way as before i.e. by speculum examination. If the result is negative and there are no symptoms/concerns, then it is now recommended to repeat it in FIVE years rather than the usual two years. This is because the new test is more accurate and so it is safe to leave a longer gap. Another big difference is the starting age for the new cervical screening test which used to be age 18 and/or within one year of becoming sexually active. It is now age 25. The exception to this is if someone started becoming sexually active at a very young age i.e. before age 14, and did not receive the HPV/Guardasil immunisations at school before becoming sexually active. It is safe for all others to start testing at age 25 as cervical cancer develops very slowly over years once HPV has been contracted (though only in a very small minority of those who contract HPV). For older ladies it is recommended to have one last “exit” cervical screening test between age 70 and 74. (continued on next page).

The financial cost of stroke in Australia is estimated to be $5 billion each year. In 2015, funding for stroke research through the National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) represented just 4.1 precent of the total investment in medical research.

MEDIA RELEASE “Women’s Business” for Wheatbelt Women
W
omen are the unsung driving forces of many a Wheatbelt business or work place. And whilst our Wheatbelt women are generally thriving in the face of the constant change, compromise, and challenges a business environment throws at them, we are concerned they continue to be vulnerable when it comes to their own finances, driven primarily by a lack of confidence around financial matters. According to WA State Government data, 60% of WA women retire with no superannuation and on average earn 25% less than men. Limited savings and sometimes a lack of financial skills and confidence to invest, this earnings inequity is further compounded. With funding from the Grants for Women Program – Department of Local Government and Communities, the Quairading Community Resource Centre hopes to inspire confidence and competence around
financial skills at their forthcoming “Women’s Business” event on 8th March 2018 at the Quairading Town Hall. Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC Governor of Western Australia will provide a keynote address in regards to the importance of women’s economic independence- the perfect topic for what is also International Women’s Day.

Speaking about calendars if you want some of your photos to be in the 2019 calendar, why don’t you rock on in to the Quairading Photo Club and become a member. We welcome everybody to be a new member no matter what your camera skills are or are not. Just start taking some photos around the Quairading town and shire, then come and show us your shots and we’ll see if we can them get in the 2019 calendar. The yearly membership cost is $40 per member. The first three meetings are free for those who want to come along and check us out. At our monthly meetings we have our very interesting private photo competition. Last year the 2017 winner for most points gained was the amazingly talented, myself !!!!!!!!!!!!!
We all display our two photos and then we vote for our own personal choice of the best three photos. After the winners are announced, we then discuss how the photos could have been more improved. We have changed the voting this year from being just First, Second and Third place. Every photo entered will now get one vote for entering the monthly competition. During the year the votes will be totalled for an ongoing personal score. We have a learning session at the meetings which go for about 30 minutes. This is where a member gives a talk about something related to photography. We sometimes now instead of giving a talk, will watch videos YouTube tutorial presentations on a big TV at the meeting room. A sad farewell from Amanda...

ith very mixed emotions and a lot of tears, I’ve decided it’s time for me to hand over the reins as Publican of the Quairading Pub. Most of you who know me would realise that this wasn’t an easy decision for me to make, and while I thought that it would probably take about two years to sell the business, it came as quite a shock to me when it actually only took two months!
so I would like to thank you, the people of Quairading, for embracing me into your town and giving me the support during my time here. You have all become such a huge part of the Qpub family and I’ve made so many great friendships along the way.

We are happy to welcome back the children and their families to The Little Rainmakers Child Care Centre. We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and new years. These first few weeks at the Centre the children have been focusing on belonging, similarities and differences. The children have enjoyed reading the books 'Have you filled a bucket today?' and 'Elmer'. It was lovely to hear all of the children say something nice about each other after reading 'Have you filled a bucket today?'. Throughout the day we observed the children being kind to their friends, whilst asking 'Am I a bucket filler?'. The children also participated in an art activity once we had read 'Elmer', we also discussed how we have differences and similarities, but that's what makes us who we are J EASER RAFFLE – the Centre will be doing an Easter Raffle & Bake Sale to raise funds for projects during the year, we will be selling tickets on 16th March at the Co-op and having a bake sale and raffle draw on 24th March, we greatly appreciate your support.

TAMMIN ART PRIZE: A brief thirty year history
T
hirty years ago members of the Tammin branch of the Country Women’s Association led by the late Mrs Brenda Crogan and Mrs Jennifer Rogers decided to commence an Art Competition to be held annually, with eligible entries being sought from the Avon Area. These far-seeing ladies approached the Shire for assistance, and with support from the Shire President Mrs Kate York, were granted a sum of money to cover the prizes. The Shire Secretary, Ralph Tonkin who had previous experience in Art Exhibitions in the Pilbara, was a fount of knowledge in the organising of our first and all consequent showings.

Initially this competition was held at the CWA building but after several years, with entries increasing, and the CWA building not being big enough to display the entries to the best advantage, the show was moved to the Shire Hall.
Over the years there have been minor alterations to the classes of paintings, the inclusion of a photography competition, displays from the school, various craft displays, children’s activities on the Saturday and entertainment. Some years have included special competition sections like scrap booking & card making. This year we have included a decorated garden spade/shovel for the adults and the children are being asked to make a garden decoration from terra cotta flower pots.
The first organising committee was a small group of diligent ladies from the Tammin CWA branch membership. After some time the committee structure changed and the younger members of the community undertook the organisation. In

To be unbiased, judges were sought from the wider community and invited to display some of their own works as exhibition only and for sale. It is hoped to contact these judges and invite them to participate once again in an exhibition of their work. 2018 sees the Tammin Art Prize reach its 30th anniversary which will be celebrated on the weekend of April 6 & 7. The CWA ladies will again be providing their scrumptious Devonshire teas, a hot meal will be available on Friday night preceding the official opening and announcement of prize winners, which will be held at 7pm. Entries are accepted from a large area extending from Northam to Merredin and from Trayning to Brookton. If you would like to participate this year, schedules and entry forms are available from, Tammin Shire Office and CRC’s in Toodyay, Wyalkatchem, Kellerberrin, and Quairading. Linkwest opposes 40% funding cut of the Community Resource Centre program, and calls for a comprehensive review

L
inkwest, the Peak Body for Community Resource Centres (CRCs) and Neighbourhood Centres (NCs) in Western Australia, notes that Minister Alannah MacTiernan stated on 2nd February that the long awaited review of the Community Resource Centre program will now take place and be completed by mid-year. This review was announced by the Minister in July 2017 after cutting short the CRC contracts. The review is being conducted prior to a forecast budget cut of 40% to the CRC network in 2019/20, dropping funding to this program from $13 Million to $8 Million. To date, the review’s terms of reference have not been finalised. While we welcome the review, Linkwest is very concerned about the short amount of time left to conduct a comprehensive assessment of a program that provides – along with a range of programs and services tailored to the needs of the local community – vital access to State and Federal Government agencies. In many of these towns, the local CRC is the only service available within a population where many either have no computer, limited Internet access or limited digital literacy. With more and more State and Federal Government services being made available exclusively online, these local place based points of access, and the support of CRC staff for those with low digital literacy, is becoming increasingly vital. Linkwest has written to Minister MacTiernan with recommendations for the terms of reference. Most notably, we believe the review should:
