FROM THE EDITOR As we go to print on this June edition of the Banksia Bulletin, I am BEYOND excited to spend the upcoming last weekend of Spring watching it rain, from the warmth and comfort of my home—from where I will also be wishing well (and warm!) thoughts to Tamara and her sisters who are scheduled to take on the 35km short, Walk for Women’s Cancer.

We’re looking forward to a few fun events to round out the financial year next month. We’re bringing back Movie Arvos, on the first Thursday of each month! We’ll be kicking off with a screening of High Ground on Thursday 3rd June (pretty please let us know if you’re planning on coming along).

High Ground is a new Aussie movie and has been hotly requested by many community members.

Next weekend is our second, Evening on the Green. We held a similar event last October and it was just so fun, and relaxed and welcoming— we’d be mad not to do that again! It’s completely free for everyone to attend and you don’t need tickets. Kim Wainwright will be performing live music for us from 4pm until 8pm, we’ve ordered a lovely sunset for shortly after 5pm and REST a While Coffee will be onsite selling hot drinks—other than that, it is a completely BYO event. So bring any food, drinks, chairs, picnic rugs, blankets, sleeping bags, thermals, beanies (etc!) you’ll need for a likely chilly winter evening out on the Town Oval. If it dares rain, we’ll make a swift change of venue, so keep an eye on next week’s Passion Sheet if the forecast is looking potentially wet!

In mid-June we’re also holding a two day AusChem Accreditation course with South Regional TAFE. We’re delighted to see this session fully booked (weeks out!) and demonstrates that our local agricultural industry takes safety of their staff seriously. If you were sitting on the fence and are devastated to have missed out, please let us know ASAP and we’ll add you to the waitlist—or organise a second session if enough demand is there.

Speaking of keeping safe; if your mammary glands are of a certain age, it’s time to book yourself in for a super fun mammogram! The BreastScreen WA van will be parked up outside the Quairading CRC from 10th—18th June. It’s so dang handy that this service comes to us, so there’s really no excuse, sorry gals. Amongst everything else going on, perhaps you’ll schedule in a trip or two to a surrounding town to watch Hockey, Netball or Football through June (each fixture is conveniently listed on the calendar on the back of this Banksia Bulletin!). There’ve been some epic wins from all teams in recent weeks, get on the sideline and get loud to make sure they keep getting those points on the board!

Cop’s Corner An update from Sergeant Lindsay Collett Greetings all, As a community you are about to experience a “Changing of The Guards”. I’ve been asked to transfer to Carnarvon as they have a shortage of Supervisors and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead, having served in that region as a Constable.

Senior Constable Ed Duffy will be taking up a new role as Patrol and Inquiry Officer in Brookton and is also looking forward to a new environment in the Great Southern.

I will say on behalf of myself and my family that the past 18 months have been a pleasure to serve as the towns Sergeant, Officer in Charge. I’ve been very impressed with the welcoming community spirit which exists in Quairading. Having served throughout Regional WA, this will no doubt be one I’ll look back on with fondness.

I would like to state that in the past two years there have only been two reported burglaries and this is something that we are quite proud of, having maintained a proactive policing approach to antisocial behaviour, drug possession and offences against property/persons.

I’d like to thank our local Noongar community members, particularly when they assisted me personally at a recent funeral in which we had to disperse and prevent some “out of towners” from causing damage to the town. It was a long night/morning and without their assistance it certainly would’ve been very difficult.

A reminder to all residents, please report any suspicious activity to 131 444. Even though we have our time off, there will always be a police vehicle nearby. If the dispatcher deems it a task needing immediate local police attendance, we will be recalled to duty.

I’m sure both Ed and I will catch up with as many of you as we can before the transfers are finalised.

I’m sure the new Police Officers will commit to the town and maintain a low crime rate and a safe environment for everyone to live in peace and enjoy the country life.

5 ways to stay healthy this winter Written by Claudia Strachan for mamamia.com.au Winter is well and truly on its way.

The leaves are starting to fall, the sun is gone by 5:30pm (miss you already, daylight savings), the evenings have become a little breezier and that morning dash to the bathroom feels pretty crisp.

Although summer is definitely my favourite season, there are things I do truly love about winter. Cosy knits, ugg boots, crisp sunny mornings, roasting in front of the fire, toasty coffee dates, flannelette sheets and (my personal favourite) that cosy hug from your dressing gown at the end of each day.

Admittedly, there are some not so great things that come with the season too. Dry skin, chapped lips, runny noses, sitting next to others sneezing and coughing on the bus commute, and finishing work in the dark. But the worst thing of course is getting a cold or flu (icky). If you’re anything like me, you may be bracing yourself for the inevitable flu that seems to come around every year no matter what.

However, there are actually some easy, proactive steps we can all take to dramatically lessen our chance of getting sick this season or even prevent it altogether. (It is not my predetermined fate to get the flu every winter, I repeat it is not my predetermined fate).

Here are 5 ways you can stay on top of your health heading into the cooler months: 1. Be proactive and get the flu shot Peak flu season is fast approaching (generally June to September). Yikes. Although the COVID-19 vaccination roll out has taken centre stage in many people’s health priorities, it's also important we don’t forget about the usual annual health threats that can come at this time of year, such as influenza. A flu vaccination can help protect you against common strains of the flu. In fact, the Australian Government recommends everyone over the age of 6 months old get an annual flu vaccination to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

So do yourself a favour and book yourself and your family in for a flu vaccination. While we're mentioning it, if you're planning on receiving the COVID-19 vaccination, it's recommended that an interval of at least 14 days is needed between the flu vaccination and a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Noted.

Ensuring you get a flu shot this year is a no-brainer. You'll protect yourself and your loved ones. Simple.

2. Keep those fluids up I don’t know about you, but I struggle with this one. As we all know, water is an essential part of a healthy diet because, well, pretty much all our bodily functions rely on it.

Often in summer we are consuming enough water without even noticing as we feel physically hot and break out a sweat much more easily. In the colder months we can sometimes be a little more slack and forget to drink water as much.

It's important to stay hydrated and keep up your water intake all year round. Government health guidelines say we should try and aim for 8 to 10 cups of water a day (around 2 to 2 and a half litres). Woah, I'm already behind.

If you struggle with being forgetful or too busy to drink water try setting an alarm on the hour reminding you to take a few sips

(you’ll thank me later).

Also don’t forget that tea counts, so go on make yourself another brew.

3. Stay active This one can often be the hardest to keep up when winter comes along. But you would have guessed it: making sure we stay active during this season is really important.

Studies have shown that the more physically fit and active you are, the less likely you are to suffer colds in the winter months. To stay healthy, experts suggest that you should be doing a minimum of two and a half hours of moderate intensity exercise, or one and a half hours of high-intensity exercise, per week – but we should all be aiming to do at least double that.

Now no one is suggesting that you need to be working out 5 days a week and entering full sweat mode every single time (but if that is you, you go girl!). It's just important to note that during the colder months we’re more likely to skip the gym or stay inside (guilty).

Maybe you’ve been putting off joining that indoor netball team for years. Anything from a brisk walk or even YouTube yoga in your pyjamas is better than nothing. It's more about making sure you keep moving, creating a routine and trying to stick to it. Grab your mates, sign yourself up and stay accountable. Your physical and mental health will be all the better for it.

4. Stock up on those immune-boosting foods Maintaining a healthy balanced diet is always something we should strive for. However, during the cooler months of the year there are particular vitamins and minerals we can increase in our diets to help boost our immune system.

Move over mangoes and watermelons, it's kiwifruit, mandarins and oranges’ time to shine. Try adding more citrus into your fruit bowl to boost those vitamin C levels. Add an extra serving of vegetables to your lunch and dinner (think leafy greens such as spinach to boost your iron). Up your zinc intake by eating more nuts and seeds where you can, and chuck some ginger in your morning juice.

Increasing our intake of vitamin C, zinc and iron where possible during the cooler months is a great natural way to help fight off those nasty winter cold and flu symptoms.

5. Practice good hygiene (you know the drill) You’re probably all across this one now that we are living with COVID-19, but it’s important we keep reminding ourselves especially heading into winter. Wash your hands regularly! If you’re not sure how long you should be washing your hands just follow this simple guide (you’re welcome).

Aside from Julia's iconic speech, and in all seriousness: please do wash your hands properly and pop a bottle of sanitiser in your bag (the 24 Daily Instant Hand Sanitiser would do the trick) to use when you're on the move.

If you need to cough and sneeze (I mean we're all human) do it into a tissue or your elbow, throw your snotty tissues in the bin straight away and if you're sick or sniffly, try and stay home to get well first.

All these tips might seem obvious but when everything is a bit colder, darker and all you want to do is hibernate, sometimes we can let them slip.

By incorporating these small habits into your life and being a bit more proactive, you’ll be well on your way to staying healthier and happier this winter season.

Quairading Sub Centre News Errol Dale Stone - 50 Year Lifetime Association Award Former Quairading resident, Errol Stone, was awarded a 50 Year Lifetime Association Award at the recent St John Working in our community for the benefit of our community is the reward our volunteers receive, with there being no expectation of recognition or reward.

Errol’s association with St John began in 1971 as a member of the Quairading St John sub centre, with 1974 being the first year that Errol was on the sub centre committee. As an Ambulance Driver (now known as Ambulance Officer) Errol had the privilege of working with many volunteers including Lloyd Richards, Clive Hawksley, John Hards, Ian Wilson, John Hards, Kevin Simpson, Greg Richards, Maurice Priest and Kevin Hudson.

Errol was also heavily involved in the training volunteers at Quairading sub centre.

Beginning in 1976 as a First Aid Instructor in Quairading, his involvement in the presentation of First Aid courses and the training of volunteers spanned a period of more that 20 years. As a trainer, Errol’s expertise was Motor Vehicle Accidents and farm accident prevention. He is considered a pioneer in the area of injury prevention awareness in Agriculture in WA. When Errol left Quairading in 1994 his involvement with St John continued as a Friend of St John’s. This allowed Errol to continue his involvement with St John by continuing to attend St John functions and attend investitures at Government House.

Throughout his involvement with St John Errol has received many awards. Awards include: - 1981: Honorary Life Member - St John Ambulance Association (WA) - 1983: The Service Medal of The Order of St John - 1989: Special Commendation of the Commander - for worthy and meritorious services in furtherance of the work of the order - 1992: Serving Brother of the Order of St John - 1994: Honorary Life Member - Quairading St John Ambulance Association Congratulations Errol on being awarded a St John 50 Year Lifetime Association Award!!

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm Where did autumn go? It seems as if one day it was 32 degrees and the next it was 18 degrees and dipping down to 10 overnight? Fortunately however, we have been blessed with a good start to the season with most areas receiving around 40mm at the start of May. We are hoping that the follow up rains will match the promising beginning. The cold nights have had the pleasing effect of increasing the intensity of the autumn colour on our deciduous trees. The yellows and reds give a deceiving European feel to gardens which, when holidaying has had to be local, could be a good thing.

Take a cup of coffee out into the garden, sit under the falling leaves, close your eyes and you could be in France or England.

Dam water can also be used with the use of a small pump and pipes to distribute the water. 3. Plant out in autumn. Small tube stock trees and shrubs planted in autumn have time to develop a good strong root system throughout the winter months which helps them to survive and grow during the following summer. 4.

MulcH!!!! There is really no need for me to add very much more to that. But to say that plant roots, soil moisture, soil temperature and soil microbes depend on the soil being protected during the driest and hottest months of the year. Without mulch and overhead shade all the vital parts of a plant are threatened and the plant goes into shutdown mode which it only recovers from if the conditions improve.

It’s time…

Tips of the Month 1. Grow plants suited to your area and even more specifically to your garden. Plants native to our area, or areas around Australia with similar conditions and even from some Mediterranean areas are better suited to be in our gardens than exotics which require a lot of pampering, a lot of water and a lot of shade in summer to perform well. Gardening sustainably doesn’t mean you can’t have a garden in the style you like it simply means that you choose local plants to do the same job as an exotic plant would do. I have Callistemon “Little John” doing really well along a path, with very little water only during our driest months which are doing the job of Azalea without any of the heartache which comes with those more delicate flowering plants. Our native plants are easier to grow, use less water and require less maintenance. Another point to consider is to try companion planting and group planting. There is a lot of information on the net about companion planting and one concise but helpful book I’ve read on this topic is Companion Gardening in Australia by Judith Collins.

Companion planting in the vegetable garden makes a lot of sense especially when it comes to using herbs as companions. Grouping plants with similar habits and requirements also makes a lot of sense. Watering is much simpler if for example all the plants requiring very little water can be grouped together. Plants with similar water requirements usually come from the same areas and therefore look like they belong together and fit a particular garden style. 2. Use rain water. Even with the initial cost of installing a water tank is taken into consideration the savings from collecting and using rainwater far out way the use of scheme water in the garden. In larger areas, such as farm gardens, swales are a good way of stopping erosion and collecting rain water for it to gradually disperse into a garden bed.

Sow – Peas, snow peas, sugar snaps winter herbs and broad beans can be put in now. Second crops of carrots, lettuce, radishes, rocket, parsnips, turnips and swedes can be put in June.

Plant – Onions, leeks, spring onions, lettuce, Chinese greens, radicchio, fennel and all other winter vegetables can be planted now. Also all deciduous trees and fruit trees can be planted in June. Flowering annuals should be put in now so that they establish well and flower in spring. This month is also the month to establish an Asparagus bed, this is a long lived plant which will produce over 20 years so prepare the bed well, plant and be patient for the first two years while the crowns establish themselves then you will enjoy this still quite expensive vegetable for many years to come.

Harvest – Mandarins, lemons, limes, apples and quince are only fruits being harvested at Eaglewood Farm.

While in the veggie garden we have lettuce, Chinese greens, kale, carrots, rhubarb, pumpkins and chillies.

Things to do – Beds and planting holes for roses should be prepared during June for rose planting in July. Prune deciduous trees, grapevines and hydrangeas but not roses because remember the saying “if you prune your roses in June you’ve pruned too soon”! Check potted plants are being watered if they are under eves and if there are frost concerns some potted plants may need to be brought under cover.

Orchids which were in a protected area for the summer months should be brought out to get the sun during winter. Cut the brown feathery growth of Asparagus at ground level and fertilize well. If you are mowing lawns, mowers should be at a higher setting than in summer.

Keep winter weeds in check while they are small. Spray deciduous fruit trees with copper before they dropped all their leaves to stop fungal diseases.

The last word – You can’t buy happiness. But you can buy plants and that’s pretty much the same thing.

Warrior Wellbeing Incontinence—what does it mean?

Incontinence is the inability to control when we wee and/or poo and it affects our bladder, bowel, and pelvic floor health. It is one of the biggest health and wellbeing issues in Australia affecting 1 in 4 Australians over the age of 15 years. It is estimated 1 in 6 men are affected by incontinence.

Why is this a problem? The majority of people (blokes in particular) choose not to discuss the issue with a GP or anyone because it is embarrassing and difficult to talk about. In the work we do, we have had many discussions with blokes who have self-diagnosed their urine leakage and are wearing a pad to mask their problem rather than acting and visiting a GP. Poor bladder control can happen due to many health issues:  Enlarged prostate – as we get older the prostate gets larger and for some men (1 in 4) this will cause bladder problems (refer Chapter 9 of this book – Understanding our Prostate)  Prostate Cancer – incontinence is a common occurrence post prostate surgery.  Poor pelvic floor muscles (EEK! - as a bloke do I have a pelvic floor?)  Nocturia – having to wake up at night to pass urine and can be a part of many common medical conditions.  Some medicines may cause the bladder to store urine, putting pressure on it.  Diabetes

There are treatment options to regain control, improve and manage incontinence:  Prostate surgery – If you have an enlarged prostate, there are many surgical options.  Pelvic floor training – pelvic floor muscle training strengthens the muscles to help control both the bladder and the bowel. We all need to have strong pelvic floor muscles.  Bladder training - can help teach the bladder to hold more urine without leaks and urgency.  Medicines – there are a range of medicines that can help with bladder control.  Continence products – these are available to help cope with leaks etc.

Incontinence may be preventable, many bladder and bowel issues can be cured, managed and/or made significantly better. It may start as a bit of after dribble at the urinal, but that is a sure sign we need to have a chat with our doctor and eliminate the causes for it. You are not alone.

If you observe any changes in your bladder control, make an appointment to talk to your doctor or contact the National Continence Helpline as they can advise you on the most appropriate health professional to see. The treatment for incontinence will depend on its cause, which in discussion with your doctor or other health professional can lead to you choosing the best option for you.
