My cold wintery soul is so delighted with this change in the weather, and gosh darned thankful that SOME rain has finally arrived. All limbs crossed that the long weekend and official start of June brings a steady heap more.

Here at the CRC we’re slowly getting our calendar of events for the rest of the year back on track. As always, we’ve got our thinking caps on 24/7 to come up with new and engaging ways to deliver initiatives and events, while adhering to the ever changing guidelines of the day. We always need and welcome help though—so yell out if you’ve had an epiphany (or idea of any sort) that we might be able to help you bring to life and deliver to our community.

Keep an eye out for Trivia Night news—we’re still teaming up with the Belles Netballers to deliver a trivia night sometime in the next couple of months.

The event will include the option for 20 people to attend in person AND heaps more to attend online from their own homes thanks to some very cool and magical technology—ooooohhhhh.

While we’re enjoying some sense of normalcy, don’t forget to keep washing your hands, maintain a physical distance from others and keep respecting the guidelines set out by governments and businesses so we can get back to proper normal and do things like going out for a drink, hugging friends and watching football!

JUNIOR FOOTBAL CLUB Enrolments will be held at the town oval Friday 5 June 2020 from 3:30 pm. We are allowed to use the Oval in 3 distinct groups. Enrolments will be done by the coach of each age group, or you may enrol online via the QJFC Facebook page. Only 20 people, including parents/ carers are allowed in each group, so each participant should be accompanied by no more than one adult family member. Muriel’s family would like to thank all the wonderful staff at the Quairading Hospital for the kindness and care shown to her during her time at the Cuneata Wing.

Thank you to everyone who has sent sympathy cards, flowers and kind messages on the passing of our dear mother, Grandmother and GreatGrandmother. She will be dearly missed by family, friends and community members.

Mary Clemens 26/12/1928 - 25/04/2020 Janice and Greg, together with Jason and Erin and their families wish to thank you all for your beautiful cards and words of sympathy following Mary’s passing on Anzac Day. Mary was a much loved Wife, Mother, Mother-in-law, Nanna and Nanna Mary who is greatly missed by us all.

We would like to say a special thank you to the Staff and Residents of Parker House, Hairdresser Sandy and Shopper Ellie for your care and friendship shown to Mary whilst she was living in Parker House.

Mary was proud to be a citizen of Quairading and this was evident in her contribution to many Committees and publishing three books, ensuring the history of Quairading was retained for future generations.

We are saddened that our family was not able to celebrate Mary’s life fittingly with her Sisters, Nieces, Nephews and her many wonderful friends at the time of her death, but hope to do so in the future.

Dr Desire Tshibumbu, Dr Desire as he likes to be called, started working as our new GP on the 2nd January 2020, at Quairading Medical Practice.

He obtained his primary medical degree in 1990 and completed his GP postgraduate training from South Africa in 2015. He has equivalent of 10 years of Australian GP experience.

He works fulltime, 5 days a week at Quairading Medical Practice and currently attends to the Aged Care Residents at the Hospital and at Parker house, ONLY. I am delighted by the great numbers of excellent reviews and commendations from the community members since his commencement approximately 4 months ago.

Let me clarify that he is not currently seeing acute care patients in the hospital due to administrative error of not listing Quairading Hospital as part of where he will work when his initial medical board application was made.

Request to correct this has been submitted to the medical board but the current COVID19 restrictions has made the process slower.

He will commence seeing acute care patients in the hospital as soon as the medical board process is completed, his credentialing to work in the hospital has already been approved by the Medical director of WACHS / Wheatbelt, based on Dr Desire’s qualifications, skills and experience.

Shingles Vaccinations When should you get immunised against shingles?

Anyone over 50 years old who wants to protect themselves against shingles can talk to their doctor about getting immunised.

Shingles immunisation is recommended for: adults aged 70 years to 79 years, for free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) adults aged 60 to 69 years adults 80 years and older adults aged 50 or over who live in the same household as someone who has a weakened immune system.

St Faith’s Anglican Church hosted the 2020 World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 6. We had a beautiful gathering and would like to extend our appreciation to all who helped out on the day.

Special thanks to the Edmands and Groeneveld family, Corry, Mary and Neil, who many of you know. They are our town’s wonderful cake bakers and dress makers, watch repairer , Rotary member & supporters. They’ve been our faithful pharmacy family of many many years, and each of them gave a fabulous presentation and background on life in Zimbabwe. We learned about the heartbreak of seeing your democratic country turn into a dictatorship, about the instability of civil war, loss of life, and lack of respect for life, the poverty that followed and subsequent immigration.

The 2020 World Day of Prayer service was based on John 5:2-9a and the theme for the day was ‘Rise! Take your mat and walk!’. The focus of the project is to empower mothers of children with a disability.

The World Day of Prayer is a lovely day of fellowship, giving and learning. Please put the 2021 World Day of Prayer on your calendar. It will be held at the Catholic Church 10am Friday March 5, 2021 and the feature country will be Vanuatu.

REOPENING OF QUAIRADING SUB CENTRE The decision has been made to reopen doors to the public for all St John sites across the state. This means that from Monday 18th May, Quairading sub centre will be able to allow visitors and volunteers into the sub centre.

However, the following measures remain in place:  There must be a distance of 1.5m between all people at all times  Hand sanitiser is available for all visitors and volunteers to access In addition, all surfaces will have been regularly cleaned with disinfectant wipes.

For an annual subscription of $93.00 per family or $56.00 for a single, you will be covered for a year for all required ambulance transport within Western Australia. To be eligible for membership with the Quairading sub centre, you must be a resident of the Quairading District.

MIA’S LOCAL HERO GRANTS

Member for Central Wheatbelt Mia Davies MLA has launched a new ‘Local Hero’ small grants program to help support local community groups across the Central Wheatbelt electorate.

Ms Davies said that in her role as the local State Member she was always pleased to support groups and the new program would offer small but meaningful grants to the community.

“My new Mia’s Local Hero Grants program will provide $250 grants for local groups who support and enrich our community in the electorate of Central Wheatbelt,” Ms Davies said.

“The first round opens on 1st May 2020 and I’d encourage eligible groups to make an application.

“It could be to support or sponsor a local event, contribute toward the purchase of new equipment or materials, or to assist your group to better support your members or community.”

Ms Davies said the grants provided an opportunity to show her support, thanks and appreciation for the hardworking volunteer and not-for-profit organisations that make such a difference in our community.

“The application process isn’t onerous, but it will be competitive so make sure you explain clearly how the money will be used and why it will benefit the community or people you support,” she said.

“There will be more than one round a year, so if you’re unsuccessful in this round I’d encourage you to apply again when we re-open them down the track.

“I’m looking forward to receiving the applications, and if anyone has concerns about their eligibility they should contact my office.”

Round 1 opens 1st May 2020 and closes at 4.00pm on Monday 1St June 2020.

NEWS FROM QUAIRADING DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL Dear Parents, Carers and the Quairading Community, Welcome to week 5 of term two. School is back in full swing in the classrooms and with regular lessons although activities outside the classroom are still a little quiet. Our teachers and many students are enjoying the fuller classrooms and hustle and bustle of a busy school.

Unfortunately, many of our students are still to re-engage with regular schooling and we will be discussing absences with parents at an appropriate time in the coming days and weeks.

As school slowly returns to normal there are still some different operating arrangements, as advised by the Education Department. Please make yourself familiar with these guidelines and definitely call the school if you need to collect your child, see a teacher, Mrs Johnston or myself.  To ensure physical distancing between adults is in place at schools, parents are requested to drop off and pick up their children at school gates, or nearby. This is based on advice from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee.  Public assemblies and other school community events should not be conducted at this time.  Interschool activities and camps will not be conducted.  Cleaning guidelines are based on, and continuously reviewed in line with, advice from the Department of Health. Cleaning has increased in Term 2, with cleaners present throughout the school day to undertake continuous cleaning regimes. All schools have cleaning staff on site during the school day to regularly clean and disinfect high-contact surfaces that are frequently used by students and/or staff.  Our JP playgrounds are open and play equipment is being cleaned before school and after each break.

This week we are celebrating National Reconciliation Week with a delightful activity in each classroom and a student meeting on Thursday afternoon to share our activities. Our activity is designed to recognise that we are ‘in this together’ which is a particularly appropriate theme for this year, and I look forward to displaying the final result. We have an ‘in this together’ collaborative vase that contains a special item from each child in the school.

At our Monday morning meeting this week we were pleased to present InterSchool Swimming trophies to Macey Dall (Champion Girl), Andrew Hippisley and Nadia Mills (Runners-Up), from the Carnival in term one. It feels like years ago now! Congratulations to those students.

School Council meet after school next week and would be delighted to hear from you should you have any positive support or feedback, queries or concerns. Your Chair is Mr Brett Caporn and your Parent Representatives are Joy Collard, Jonathan Hippisley, Jody Yardley and Danielle Hayden.

We have had new carpet laid in the Admin area recently, with the offices to follow in the coming months. This is a welcome improvement to our front office area.

Our eight students selected for the Talented Young Writers Program through the Literature Centre in Fremantle will be going ahead with their program this term – online. Andrew Hippisley, Matilda Gelmi, Shelby Faltyn, John Hippisley, Jasmine Keir, Aaron Shultz, Stella Squiers and Tuscynnie Yardley will soon have access to a series of videos from the nominated author and the children will be conducting their TYWP at school. Thankyou to our parents who were prepared to drive our children to Perth for their workshops. Hopefully in second semester the students may get to attend the old Fremantle Prison Hospital, which is currently The Literature Centre.

Our condolences go to Trey and Rae-vynn Calyun and their families who lost their Mum this week, a very sad situation for the family.

Lots of us members still need to break the habit of taking our pics just before the competition deadline is due and get out there and take lots of pics during the month and keeping photographing something until it is a much better pic. We gotta get out there on the training track and practice to win that premiership!

This month we have the harder subject “DOOM & GLOOM”. This is a subject where we will have to think a lot about what to photograph and probably do some creative setups to snap a perfect pic. This all adds to lots of stimulation of getting lots of pics sorted & chosen for the competition.

We as always are still welcoming new members to our club to join anytime you want. The cost is $40 per annum no matter what time of the year you want to join.

GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm I’m writing this rather awkwardly because I have all my fingers and toes crossed; waiting for this rain to come. This once in a decade storm better deliver some decent falls as I’m sure not only the farmers need it but everyone is well and truly sick of the dust flying about. Autumn has not been as wet as March indicated but at least the temperatures have been cool and the new plantings have done well because of this. The predictions are for wetter than average winter, so here’s hoping!

Asparagus, Rhubarb and new strawberry runners can be planted now. Use a seaweed tonic when putting in new plants as it helps with root development. Do not fertilise any new plants until good signs of growth is noticed.

Plant of the Month – This month’s plant is a food bearing tree. Our climate although harsh in summer does have enough chill in winter to support the growing of some fruits which are normally associated with cooler climates. Apples are one such fruit. We grow a variety of apples at Eaglewood Farm, all quite successfully even though they get minimal water in summer.

Because apple harvest depends on good cross pollination more than one variety of apple needs to be planted. This can be achieved by planting two or more trees of different varieties or even by having more than one variety grafted onto one tree. There are literally thousands of varieties. We had a memorable visit to Wisley Gardens in Surrey England where they have an experimental plot of apple trees which contains two of every variety known to man. Wow it was unbelievable! Rows and rows of thousands of trees! A good pollinator is our very own Granny Smith apple. We also grow Lady William, Pink Lady, Jonathon and one I would definitely recommend is Sundowner. These varieties give us freshly picked apples from March through to June, also apples store quite well if they can be kept cool.

Things to do – almost all the autumn leaves will have dropped by now, these make a wonderful addition to the compost pile as they decompose easily and add nutrients to the pile. When there are a few dry days in a row (hopefully not many) prune deciduous fruiting trees and hydrangeas.

Prune for shape and good air circulation. Check potted plants that are under cover that they are getting enough water when the rest of the garden is being watered from the sky.

Harvest – we are harvesting black Olives, Feijoa, Sundowner Apples, Quinces, Pak Choi, Lettuce, Rocket, Bitter Greens, Sweet Potato, Radishes, Zucchini and Capsicum.

The last word – Old gardeners never die, they just run out of thyme.

It’s time to…

Sow – spring flowering annuals; sunflowers, poppies, alyssum, and whatever your favourites are. In the vegetable garden many herbs like coriander, dill, parsley. June is the time to put in peas and broad beans. Peas are sown in rows so that climbing support can be put in for them and broad beans are planted in blocks with a stake at each corner which are used to run a string around so that the tall bean plants are not knocked over by the wind.

Plant – anything and well almost everything!

When the soil is finally moist and easy to work, any of the following can be planted, deciduous fruiting and flowering trees, roses, native trees, groundcovers and shrubs and spring flowering bulbs if not already planted. In the vegetable garden it is time to put in onion seedlings; these are planted in rows, in shallow trenches so that just their roots are covered in soil, there is no need to stand them upright as they will do it on PAGE 37

THE HUGE VALUE THEY ADD TO A SCHOOL

The benefits of boarding school are not limited to the boarding students themselves.

The positives that boarders bring to a school community are significant.

Australian boarding schools offer an opportunity for kids from sparsely-populated rural areas to receive high-quality education. They offer kids an amazing array of opportunities and facilities that wouldn’t be available to them at home. However, what we often don’t talk about is what boarders offer the rest of the school. What do these kids bring to the students from the city?

INDEPENDENCE Boarders, by necessity, become very independent. They don’t have mum and dad around to schedule them and make sure they meet all their obligations. Boarders do that themselves.

They also have to manage their own money, sort out their washing, regulate their diet and so much more. They help to create a culture of independence in the school. It’s hard to whine about forgetting your sports equipment when the boarder next to you washed and packed their own sports kit. They set the bar high.

PARTICIPATION Boarders are heavily involved in the school and all its activities. Of course they are…they live here. They tend to be the core of sporting groups in particular. Many of them have played a lot of sport in the country because that is a popular form of entertainment in many country towns.

Not only do they bring their skill and talent to the field or court, but they also bring the expectation that everyone will pitch in and help with administration and duties. Because that is how sporting clubs in the country are managed, by the community.

SHARE THE COUNTRY STORY It is very important for kids to grow up in environments where they are exposed to different people with different ways of life. Boarders are forced into this situation. However, they also provide that experience for city kids. Boarders tell the stories of their lives. They talk about life on the farm or in their faraway places. They tell their stories of driving through paddocks and dealing with stock, shearing, riding their horses and not being able to get the internet all the time. This opens the eyes of city kids. Their pure ‘get it done’ attitude shows city kids what is possible. In a girls’ school like Santa Maria College, it is good for our city students to spend time with girls who have spent their lives in environments and activity that is not stereotypical.

SENSE OF FUN Boarders are fun. They have outside voices and big laughs and they are looking for things to be fun. School is their life for months at a time and they decide they might as well enjoy it. They don’t wait until after school to have fun, they make their own entertainment at school and they bring that atmosphere to the rest of the school.

TOLERANCE AND PATIENCE Boarders live with a bunch of other people in very close quarters. They don’t get to choose who those people are and those people are not family. You either get along or life is unbearable. This breeds, in boarders, tolerance and acceptance of difference. They learn how to negotiate conflict and problem solve. Boarders must also be patient. Living in a community means that things don’t necessarily happen at the moment you want them to…meals for example. Sometimes you have to wait. The skills of tolerance and patience are also used in their dealings with the rest of the school community. Again, it creates a culture.

BRING THE COUNTRY TO THE CITY In the country, it is very normal for teenagers to be quite involved with people of all ages and backgrounds. In the city our kids tend to spend their time with other kids of the same age and people who are just like them. Country kids will be in sporting teams and clubs with adults, they will know everyone at the football club from Auskickers to the League team. They know the owners of all the shops and they say hello to everyone. As a result of all this varied interaction, country kids tend to have a comfortable way with adults and kids of varying ages.

They bring that easy nature and friendliness to school with them. You can see it in the way they deal with teachers and younger kids. It is contagious.

TEACHERS I’m sure day students wouldn’t mind me saying that boarders are special for teachers. There is always a little group of them in your class and their needs are a bit different. Their parents have made a leap of faith and sent their child to work with you. It raises the stakes. I have always loved working with boarders. There is banter and laughs, but there are often stronger relationships too. They know they owe it to their parents to make the most of their opportunities, so they are quick to try hard and access help. It allows you to create bonds and they are always grateful for that time and connection. It gives teachers a great sense of purpose.

COMMUNITY The very essence of a successful school is its sense of community. Intangibles like school spirit, loyalty and pride come from a core population who model and share that sense of community.

Boarding communities are often that core population. Boarders sometimes refer to themselves as ‘rent a crowd’, because they are at every school event and function. And they are. They are completely immersed in school community and at the same time perpetuate it.

GROUNDED Boarding students bring a sense of levity and maturity that reflects their country communities and lifestyle. Their exposure to many adults and their smaller communities ensures they have always been given a lot of care but also a lot of responsibility. They have been seen and heard in a way that is unique to small communities. It breeds resilience and a quiet confidence that cuts through many potential teenage problems and traps.

LEADERSHIP Having been independent and resourceful for a number of years, as well as immersed in school culture, it should come as no surprise that boarders often emerge as leaders in school communities. Their demonstrated ability to problem solve, their tolerance and their advanced social skills make them ideal leaders. They also show teamwork born of years of helping one another with homework, doing chores together and community living.

FINALLY… This week is National Boarding Week. It’s nice to have the opportunity to celebrate the character, community and resilience of our boarders and all the great things that boarders contribute to city schools.

QUAIRADING GOLF CLUB The season remains closed until the next review on 8th June. We are encouraging social golf and you can now play in groups of up to 4 practicing physical distancing. The Clubhouse remains closed. Please see the signs attached to Captains window and buggy shed. There is also a sign with regards to GUR by number 10 tee.

A huge congratulations to Joel Hathaway who had a hole in one a couple of weeks ago during a social round. Well done Joel, we look forward to seeing a repeat once the competition starts! A little birdie also informed us that Keith Johnson has continued his winning form with an Eagle - congrats Plumber.

A huge thank you to Members for paying subs which has been vital for ongoing club costs. Our subs are $120 and can be paid directly into Qdg Golf Club acc BSB 036172 ACC # 760254 and using your name as reference please. Social games are $10, please leave your money in slot provided at Captain’s window.

A huge thank you to the men who have been working tirelessly on our course as usual but this year with the added work or clover planting. Hopefully by the time you read this we have had some much need rain for it to pop up! We acknowledge EDSCO in Kellerberrin for generously donating the clover seed, this is so very much appreciated.

The Golf Club are now using Xero accounting package and our Treasurer Janine is extremely thankful to Carol Dall, RSM for all of her help in the setting up of the new programme.

The Scott Johnson Memorial Golf Day has been postponed until later in the year so watch this space for an update, it’s always a great day and a very important day in our golfing calendar.

WARRIOR WELLBEING Blokes and Dehydration We’ve all heard the old rule of thumb “8 glasses of water per day”. We shouldn’t be surprised to learn that this is an approximation for the average person and doesn’t consider gender or lifestyle. In fact, eight glasses a day might actually be leaving us dehydrated and the average intake for blokes might have to be revised upwards to about 13 glasses.
