The Powell family sincerely wish to thank everyone for their kindness and generosity at Eddie’s funeral and for the support and heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. The family would especially like to thank the local ambulance volunteers and staff at the Quairading Hospital, ICU doctors and staff at St John of God Murdoch, the Quairading DHS P&C for the amazing catering and Rowlie Mellor for assistance with the hall equipment.

SAUSAGE ROLLS WITH SAGE, APPLE AND PISTACHIO Ingredients 700g Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored 1 bunch sage leaves, chopped 30g butter 20ml extra virgin olive oil, plus 40ml extra 1 tsp sea-salt flakes, plus extra to season Freshly ground black pepper, to season 1 large white onion, finely chopped 600g free-range pork mince, not too lean, chilled 600g beef mince, not too lean, chilled 180g stale white loaf of bread with crusts, processed into crumbs 160ml tomato sauce 50ml Worcestershire sauce 3 free-range eggs 1 cup pistachios, coarsely chopped 90g cheddar cheese, finely grated 90g parmesan cheese, finely grated 1 Tbsp dried oregano 2 tsp ground allspice 1/3 whole large nutmeg, grated 6 sheets store-bought frozen butter puff pastry 3 Tbsp poppy seeds 3 Tbsp sesame seeds Chutney, to serve

Method Preheat oven to 200°C fan-forced (220°C conventional). Cut apples into 2cm rough chunks.

Place chunks in a large bowl with sage, butter, oil, salt and pepper, then toss and transfer to a large oven tray. Roast for 20-30 minutes until apple has softened and caramelised. Remove and cool to room temperature.

Put extra oil in a large frying pan over medium heat, add onion and cook, stirring, for a few minutes, until softened. Remove from heat and cool.

Put minced meat into a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment. Beat on medium speed for 5 minutes to combine meat thoroughly. It will start to appear a little stringy at this point. Add breadcrumbs, tomato sauce and Worcestershire sauce and beat for 2 minutes.

Put 2 eggs in a large bowl and whisk. Stir in pistachios, cheeses, oregano, cooled onion, allspice and nutmeg, and season well. Put meat in with egg mixture and mix until well combined.

Add roasted apple and mix again. Spoon mixture into a large piping bag and refrigerate until chilled.

Lightly beat remaining egg in a small bowl. On a clean, dry surface lay out pastry sheets. Cut each one in half. Brush one edge with egg wash. Pipe a generous amount of meat along one long edge of pastry (less for thin ones) and brush the other edge with egg wash. Roll to enclose. Sprinkle poppy and/or sesame seeds on top.

Line 2 large oven trays with baking paper. Cut rolls to whatever size you like (the sausage rolls can be frozen at this point between freezer bags in an airtight container).

Put rolls, evenly spaced, on prepared trays. Bake in preheated oven (as step 1) for 20 minutes or until golden and crisp. Serve with chutney or your sauce of choice.

The successful applicant will work with a team that is engaged in a variety of tasks involving the construction and maintenance of Council’s roads and other assets. The applicant should have sound skills and experience in operating trucks, loaders, rollers, tractors, Maintenance Grading, Operation and a variety of other minor plant.

The position of Plant Operator/General Hand is required to hold a HR drivers licence however a HC licence will be well considered.

25 YEARS OF LOCAL RADIO 101.3fm Voice of the Avon On June 19th, local community radio station 101.3fm Voice of the Avon celebrates a quarter century of broadcasting. Its focus is local towns and community organisations. 101.3fm enthusiastically supports local musicians and is a community news and events network.

Big celebrations are planned there for Sunday, June 23rd this year. A free concert, community information stalls, the Lions Food Truck, the Lions Minature Train and more. 101.3fm relies entirely on community support from members, sponsors and donors to continue to broadcast the wide range of music and local community info.

This small, not-for-profit community station is fully staffed by volunteers and really growing.

Voice of the Avon currently provides over 90 hours of live, local programs every week for the Central Wheatbelt and Avon Valley.

Training is more comprehensive now days and Our youngest presenter - trained and aired first delivered by one of the two very experienced program at 14 years of age. She is talented musician retired radio professionals who are station and will be performing at the Open Day Concert. members __________________________________________ 101.3fm members are not all presenters. Great volunteers maintain the gardens, arrange technical developments, plus building repairs and maintenance. And there are also nonbroadcasting committee members who are essential to the organisation.

Originally on the AM band, the station now broadcasts FM, and also live-streams as “101.3fm Voice of the Avon”. The name now more accurately reflects the far wider range of the community it now serves but the official call sign remains 6YCR.

All FM radio signals can be heard if listeners are within “line of sight” of the radio mast.

101.3FM’s antenna is on Mt Bakewell and programs can be heard in locations from Wongan to Pingelly; from western Merredin to eastern edges of Mundaring; and from Toodyay to Quairading 101.3fm is still growing and supporting the Central Wheatbelt and Avon Valley Everyone is warmly invited to the free Open Day Celebrations June 23rd from 10am at 26 Barker St York.

SPARE A THOUGHT FOR FARMERS AND OUR SMALL COUNTRY TOWNS Article written by Raelene Hall for the Midwest Times, Wednesday, 22 May 2019.

What is a drought? I could find a very detailed technical explanation in the dictionary but, in my eyes, it’s when any farming enterprise struggles to run due to a lack of rain.

Generally, I’d say, there is always some place in Australia suffering from drought.

Some may only be short term, two or three years, others could go on for a decade.

Droughts in Australia can be traced back to the 1800s.

Every farmer will deal with drought differently.

Droughts in cropping areas are very different to stock farmers dealing with drought.

Likewise, all farmers will have their own method of dealing with a drought.

A drought isn’t usually newsworthy until it has become a record-breaking, soul-destroying event, driving some people to breaking point.

The impact of a drought is far more widespread than many people realise.

The effects will flow on to those who are the next step in the chain of farming — stock carters, grain carters, livestock buyers, the machinery salesman, casual farm workers and the local fuel company — who will all suffer from a drought.

A prolonged drought will see people tightening their belts and not spending as much.

This leads to fewer community events happening, which begins the vicious cycle of isolation.

How can you help? Well, if you are hooking up the caravan and heading off, remember the small towns in the bush.

No matter how small a town, if you stop and spend a few dollars there, you are going to contribute to the future of that place.

The area may not be in drought but there is nothing more certain than it will be one day.

UPDATE FROM HARRISON I thought you might like to know a bit about my life since I started dancing at Charlesworth Ballet Institute in Perth. It is a full time Ballet School, so I do all my dance training there, as well as my schoolwork. The students do Distance Education, and there is a teacher to help us with our work.

I leave home to catch a bus to Midland at 6.50am, then a train into Perth, and a train out to Burswood, where the Ballet School is, arriving just after 8am. I say hello to my friends, then make sure I am organised for class. A typical day for me might be 8.30-9.20 - Pilates, 9.3010.30 - Contemporary dance, 10.30-11.30 Spanish dance, 11.30- 1pm Classical dance, 11.30 Boys dance skills, (girls learn Pointe), 1.304.30 Academic (school work). On other days we do foot work, or body conditioning, or pirouette skills, and my day might not finish until 5pm.

Then I travel home by train and bus, put my dance clothes in to wash, and help organise dinner. It is very important as an athlete to make sure that I have very healthy foods, so no sugar, and definitely no white bread or unhealthy food, lots of vegetables and some fruit, only complex carbohydrates such as wholemeal pasta and brown rice, and some protein, such as chicken or lean steak. I drink lots of water. Then I finish any schoolwork that still needs doing, and stretch and roll out my aching muscles before going to bed around 9pm.

During the first week in July I will be travelling to Melbourne to the Australian Ballet School again, and I am excited to see how much I have improved.

I am also looking forward to being part of an International Youth Gala, that is being held at the Crown Theatre on August 14th.

Charlesworth Ballet have invited 9 semiprofessional male dancers from Europe and the United Kingdom including: The Vaganova Ballet Academy Russia, Palucca University of Dance Dresden, Ballettakademie der Wiener Staatsoper Vienna and Ballettschule Theatre Basel, to come to WA and train with us, and prepare a performance. The proceeds from this will go to Youth Ballet WA, a not-for profit organisation that works closely with the Charlesworth Ballet Institute, Perth’s oldest and most esteemed training ground for young dancers wishing to pursue and attain a career in dance.

I have been very lucky to have had so much support from people in Quairading, it will be good to be able to dance and help others.

GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk We’re into the last month of autumn and it has now been six months since we had any decent amount of rainfall. Almost all parts of the southwest are experiencing the driest summer in a very long time and keeping our gardens alive has become a difficult job. Some of our readers have scheme water which is expensive and so creates its own drawbacks and others rely on tank or dam water which is more finite and so minimizing water wastage is crucial. Soft mulch is very important in keeping any moisture available exactly where it is needed around the roots of the plants. Keeping the temperature of the soil at root level, (10 to 30 centimeters) below 35 degrees is extremely important to plant growth. Ways of doing this are: mulching up to 4cm thick, having overhead shade for the plants and keeping soil as moist as possible. Again as I finished last month keep optimistic, it has to rain soon. Doesn’t it?

Plant of the Month Bougainvillea BAMBINO, my plant has claret flowers (all Bougainvillea have coloured bracts the actual flowers are quite small and white) and is variegated.

I’ve had this plant for over twenty five years. It spent the first three years of its life in the ground and then when we were about to move, it was put in a pot and in that pot it has stayed. It came with us in the big move to the country and has been on the northern side of the house happily growing and flowering for at least four to five months each year. I have a succulent ground cover growing around the base of the plant, so rather than repotting it, once or twice a year I top up the potting mix and the ground cover happily grows up and over the new potting mix. Bougainvilleas come from the northern countries of South America so they love our summers, they grow and flower best in full sun but will grow quite well in part shade although they will flower less in shade. A small amount of fertiliser in spring, summer and autumn and being kept a little on the dry side is all the care they need.

and new shoots will be produced which in turn will produce more flowers. The old fashioned Bougainvilleas which are best known for their vicious thorns also have their place in large gardens but the bambino range which has been available since 1997 has made it possible to grow these beautiful plants in pots, in hanging baskets, as hedges and as feature plants in all styles of gardens.

It’s time to…

Plant – Most plants can go in now, the soil is still warm, the days are pleasantly warm and the nights are cool. To encourage good root growth put plants in with compost in the planting hole and water in with a seaweed solution which also has a soil wetter added.

Remember to water these new plants until we get drenching rains. In the veggie patch all the cool season veggies should be in and also benefitting from the unseasonal warm weather. This is also a great time to put in herbs, parsley, coriander, thyme, chives, oregano, marjoram and sage.

Sow – More veggies can now be sown now so that you will have continuous supply right into late spring.

Annuals such as Pansies, Cinerarias, Violas and Poppies can be sown for a splash of colour later in winter.

Harvest – Late grapes are still being harvested, but the apples which would normally have been ready to harvest are just now starting to change colour again the warm days are fooling even them. Pomegranates are ready to pick and our snake beans have not stopped producing since mid February.

Things to do – Autumn is a good time to fertilise all your fruit trees with slow release pelletised manure.

This will break down slowly over winter and give the trees a good start in spring. With the milder days it is pleasant to potter around in the garden. Walking around the garden you will notice jobs that need to be done, dead branches that need pruning off, trees that need shaping, vines that have gone beyond the structure you have for them, roses that need dead heading, citrus trees that need their branches thinned out so that good air circulation is achieved and there are fewer problems with scale or mealy bug and summer flowers that have gone past their use by dates and need to be removed to make room for new annuals.

The last word – A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know, they will never enjoy.

BANKSIA BULLETIN We’ve come to the end of autumn and apart for two small amounts of rain, which at Eaglewood farm only amounted to 11.5mm, there has not been a break in the season yet. Most of our neighbouring farmers have finished seeding and we are now all praying for rain.

The cooler weather has meant that plants are not transpiring as much and so most of the water applied to their roots is retained. Roses are looking great. I believe autumn roses are far better than the spring blooms because of the cooler temperatures. Also all the summer flowering plants are still putting on a colourful show these include Salvias, Petunias and Pelargoniums.

Plant of the Month – One of those great summer survivors the Petunia is this month’s chosen plant. Why? Well not just because it’s a survivor but because it survives in style. Plants which I put in last November are still flowering and looking splendid, really can a gardener ask for anything more? And yes we do! We want our flowing plants to be self cleaning and Petunias are, they drop the flower petals quite discretely and carry on flowering. Of course if you want longer flowering it’s a good idea to trim off the spent stem and give the plants a boost with a liquid fertiliser. We also want them to come in all the colours of the rainbow and they do, well almost. There are red, purple, mauve, pink, white and bi-coloured Petunias with really only orange and yellow missing. When I first started gardening here in the Wheatbelt I didn’t plant Petunias because I thought they wouldn’t survive our summers but I have once again become a convert. They are a common plant and perhaps the most bought punnet plant in the nursery trade so in a way they are victims of their own success, I certainly shall be planting more Petunias.

Sow – Broad beans and peas and more of the winter vegetables mentioned in the May edition. Spring flowering bulbs should be in by the end of this June, usually they should have gone in during May, however, because of the lack of rain this year you could wait until we’ve had a good down pour. My bulbs, freesias, daffodils, Ranunculi, Tritonias and King Fabiolas went in mid May; looking forward to a festival of colours this spring! Spring flowering annuals should also be sown during June so that they have time to grow well before being put into the garden in late August.

Harvest – Apples, Pistachios, Pomegranates, Olives, still more Grapes and in the vegetable garden -Silver Beet, Lettuce, Radishes, Bok Choi, Tomatoes and Chillis.

Things to do – Fertilize trees and shrubs with slow release pellets so that winter rains will deliver a slow feed over the coming months. Pick up fallen fruit to prevent the spread of disease and fruit fly. Watch out for Galls on citrus, these are swellings along the branches, they must be cut off and placed in a plastic bag which can be put in the microwave oven for a minute. Cut off spent flowers to encourage more flowers and finally remember to water plants which are in pots or under eves and don’t benefit from dewy nights.

The last word –It is only the gardener who faithfully plants in autumn who reaps a harvest in spring.

It’s time to…

Plant – This time of the year is the best time to put in all manner of plants and trees. My latest plantings are fifty Eucalyptus caesia, they are the Silver Princess gums which have very attractive large pink flowers and weeping growth habit; ten Nandina Domestica nana, these are the dwarf sacred bamboo which have a red tinge to their new leaves; and six Abelia Grandiflora nana another dwarf plant, this Abelia has arching stems which are covered in white flowers in summer and the new foliage is bronze coloured; ten Jacaranda seedlings which we grew from seed ourselves, these trees have proved to be very successful here in the Wheatbelt, they love our hot summers and our wet winters J and whilst they flower later than in Perth they do flower very well indeed and finally six Poinciana seedlings which again we’ve grown from seed, these are a favourite tree of mine and so far I have over twenty of these growing but I cannot yet recommend them because although they are surviving they have not flowered as yet. Tube stock is the way to go with native plants but please buy plants which are not root bound, they will establish a good root system before summer and will only need a small amount of water to take them through their first summer.

QUAIRADING DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL The last 13 weeks has whizzed by in the year five/six classroom! There never seems to be a dull moment between the assortments of ongoing jokes, learning lots of new things and of course, plenty of laughs.

The end of term one saw us preparing for ANZAC day. We researched the history and wrote stories focusing on Australia’s involvement in all conflicts and peace-keeping missions since the landing at Gallipoli in 1915.

We did some commemorative poppy art to accompany our work which was on display at the schools ANZAC service.

On top of our already jam-packed curriculum, we have learned about some significant days on the calendar.

For Harmony Day in March, we celebrated multiculturalism and how our heritage makes us all unique. In April we put our persuasive writing skills to work to promote sustainability as part of Earth Week, creating vibrant, bossy posters on caring for our environment for future generations. In week two, we talked about the importance of speaking out and creating caring, supportive friendships as part of the ‘Day for Dolly’, the national day against bullying. Needless to say, the year five and sixes have been busy expanding not only their academic understanding but also their awareness of being the best possible versions of themselves and making the world a better place to be.

Monday 13th May, our classroom transformed into a bustling Book Café! We welcomed family members to help us ‘taste’ different genres of books. The book reports which we all shared with our classmates and guests were excellent, as was the mountain of food! Thanks to everyone who was able to come along and to all those for sending in delicious treats! The students loved welcoming you into our classroom and showing off their efforts.

On our last day with Mrs Walker we had a Minute To Win It challenge, lots of fun was had by all!

Fire n’ Yarn On Wednesday 15th of May QDHS held a Fire n’ Yarn at the Kaadadjiny Kalyakorrl (nature playground). All members of the community were invited to attend as a way of building positive relationships within and between our school and the local community. Year 7-10 students cooked a Sausage Sizzle and local Nyoongar families cooked up a delicious kangaroo stew with damper. It was an opportunity for local families and the local community to give feedback about the ACSF Plan and Aboriginal Aspirational Vision being developed by the school, to help include and develop opportunities for learning about Indigenous Culture in the classroom. The turn-out was great, the feedback was positive and it was a great afternoon around the fire to have informal conversations.

We hope to create more opportunities for conversation in the future!

Kaya (Hello)…. Wandjoo (Welcome) High School Humanities and Social Sciences (H@SS) This semester has been a very busy one…

Whilst learning about History in term one we have also facilitated a hands-on session about ‘Primary and Secondary Sources” for the 5/6 class.

The 7/8 H@SS class had their Viking Assembly in week 5 – it was a lot of fun rehearsing and making the props whilst learning about the Vikings, their customs and culture.

Students have produced their term 1 History assessments on Ancient or Mediaeval societies – for the year 7/8’s and WW1 & WW2 for the year 9/10’s as well as learning about their future career possibilities.

During term one we also visited all the classes from Kindy/ Pre-Primary to year 5/6’s with our chickens for a ‘Chicken Handling” workshop so students could learn more about them and have a hold.

In term two High School students have been busy with the vegetable patch planting many new varieties of winter vegetables and insect attracting flowers. Many thanks go to the Quairading Garden and Gifts Shop for their support with some new plants.

High School students will facilitate a mock election in week 4 of term 2 to apply their learning about the preferential voting process used in Australia.

We had the school ANZAC Assembly in week one term 2 and lots of fabulous work was produced by all classes. The High School students coordinated the Library displays and the morning tea for guests, they also made many of the wreaths used during the ceremony .

QDHS PROJECT MANAGER’S REPORT 28th May 2019 The staff at Quairading District High School have continued to demonstrate their commitment to driving a strong improvement agenda whilst maintaining a learning environment that is safe, respectful, tolerant, inclusive and that promotes intellectual rigour.

The QSpirit Team would like to express their sincere gratitude for the honest feedback that various community groups provided in their recent Community Engagement Survey. The survey was conducted to gather feedback relating to the effectiveness of current schoolcommunity partnerships. The QSpirit Team have since met to discuss the survey responses and, based on the result of 100% of groups wanting to strengthen their partnership with the school, the team has decided they will conduct a more specific and comprehensive review of the schoolcommunity partnerships. The QSpirit team, who represent the staff of Quairading District High School, are committed to establishing and maintaining positive and productive partnerships with families, local businesses and community organisations for the purpose of supporting our core business; improving student outcomes.

The ACSF committee attended the Quairading RAP committee meeting with our Principal Pauline Wray on the 8th of May where chairperson, Mrs Jaime Garratt, presented the work of the committee, thus far, and invited members of the local Aboriginal community to attend and give feedback about the ACSF plan at the Fire’n’Yarn event taking place the following week. The Fire’n’Yarn event that was held on the 15th of May proved to be very successful with a large turnout of community members. Mrs Jaime Garrett presented the aspirational vision for

students at the event, and received positive feedback from the community relating to the ACSF plan and the aspirational vision.

The committee continues to progress implementation and will continue to draw on the unique knowledge and cultural histories of the local Aboriginal community and work towards becoming a more culturally responsive school.

Leadership, along with two members from the FutureQ committee attended the 4-day professional learning workshop “Leading School Improvement for Small Schools” throughout May. The team completed four modules which looked at leading whole school improvement, identifying the need for change, planning to make a difference and building on our current practice, which impacts on classrooms and students. The group were given the opportunity to look at our school in context, effective whole school planning, high functioning teams and developing a culture of learning.

As part of our School Improvement Plan, a Leading School Improvement Team (LSITJ will be formed to focus on what matters most and plan for improvements that best suits the school, students and the community. The team will work collaboratively with Administration and staff to develop a plan that applies our resources (staff time, expertise, funds, facilities, materials) in a targeted manner to meet the learning and wellbeing needs of all students. The LSIT will give high priority to building and maintaining positive and caring relationships between staff, students and parents. The intended outcome is a strong collegial culture of mutual trust and support among staff, and parents being treated as partners in the promotion of student learning and wellbeing.

And that's what has happened in Ben's case, with the two last scans revealing the tumours had reduced in size.

"It's still early days and Ben will have to be regularly monitored and may need chemo," Mrs Fleitmann said.

"But that treatment has side effects so if we are able to avoid it, especially when he's so young, then that's what we'll do."

Figtree boy Ben Fleitmann was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when he was just two weeks old.

Nine months on, his parents Kate and Walter are preparing to dress him in his superhero outfit for the Little Heroes Walk at next month's Run2Cure Neuroblastoma in Sydney's Domain.

As a registered nurse who works at Wollongong Hospital, Mrs Fleitmann is no stranger to the hospital environment. However she's never been on the other side, and said it's opened her eyes.

"We had no warning - while I was pregnant I had a two vessel cord which isn't usually an issue, and that's why the scans were done to check Ben's kidneys, which were fine," she said.

"To be told he had a neuroblastoma, and to watch him go through all this, so tiny and helpless, was tough.

"But our family rallied around us, and the doctors at The family has put a team together for the walk which Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick are so raises funds for research into neuroblastoma - the incredibly smart and so wonderfully empathetic. Plus leading cause of cancer deaths in children under five the charities provide a lot of support and information years. at a time when everything is so overwhelming."

It's thanks to that research that Ben has so far been able to avoid gruelling rounds of chemotherapy that would have taxed his little body, with surgeons able to take a 'watch and wait' approach.

"An ultrasound at two weeks revealed a mass in Ben's left adrenal gland and because scans showed it was growing rapidly, he had to undergo a laparotomy to remove the tumour at seven weeks old," Mrs Fleitmann said.

"The surgery went well, the tumour and the adrenal gland was removed and there was no remaining cancerous tissue.

Mrs Fleitmann encouraged other Illawarra residents to take part in the Run2Cure Neuroblastoma on June 2.

The event was started by Lucy Jones, president of Neuroblastoma Australia, after she lost her two year old daughter to the cancer in 2010.

Neuroblastoma is the most common solid tumour of childhood, commonly originating in the abdomen. The average age of diagnosis is two years and children with aggressive forms of the disease have only a 50 per cent chance of survival. The charity believes these statistics can be turned around with enough research.

"However surgeons did discover hepatic metastasis which means tumours had developed throughout his liver. We were told that five years or so ago, that would have meant Ben would have had to undergo hard core chemotherapy.

ST JOHN BOOSTS QUAIRADING’S RESPONSE CAPABILITY Media Release 15 May, 2019 St John WA volunteers in Quairading have been working hard to fortify the community’s ability to respond to a medical emergency.

This has included equipment donations and education about the St John Community First Responder program, which aims to locate automatic defibrillators in population centres so they can be deployed quickly in the event that someone collapses and requires resuscitation.

Community Paramedic Drew Richardson said good quality CPR and early defibrillation (which is the delivery of a controlled electrical current through the heart), were critical for survival in cardiac arrest.

“That's why first aid and defibrillators are such a focus in our community now; we can use these to build community resilience,” he said.

Drew said St John also created a First Responder smartphone app which allows people to locate a nearby defibrillator unit.

The local defibrillators are registered on the app and when triple zero is called from the app, the caller’s location is pinpointed, as is the nearest defibrillator.

St John recommends refreshing your first aid training every 12 months to ensure your first aid skills are kept current and to maintain the confidence to deliver first aid in an emergency situation. This is also in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council’s guidelines that states CPR skills should be refreshed annually.

2019 ANZAC DAY ADDRESS Given by Graeme Fardon, CEO Shire of Quairading Good Morning Ladies, Gentlemen, Boys and Girls Firstly, I acknowledge Special Guests, All Veterans, Veteran’s Families, Serving Personnel and our Elders.

It is a great honour to have been invited by the Quairading Sub Branch of the RSL to deliver this years ANZAC Day Address on a day when all Australian and New Zealanders (and those of many nationalities now calling Australia home) come together to commemorate one of the most significant events in our collective national calendar, signifying the Landing of the ANZAC’s at Gallipoli on the 25th April 1915, 104 years ago today.

As many of you know I am not a “born and bred local” but I have been attending the ANZAC Day Memorial Service in Quairading for the past 25 Years as a personal mark of Respect for all Service personnel (past and present), but particularly those residents of the Quairading and Surrounding Districts who left their families, their farms ,their livelihoods and enlisted, trained and travelled to foreign shores in the many theatres of War and Conflict to defend our nation and to preserve its national interests.

The now Shire District saw 184 Community Members volunteer and serve in the Armed Forces in WW1, with 33 Killed in Action, with a further 8 dying of their Wounds sustained and 2 would be taken Prisoner of War, thankfully both men survived their imprisonment and returned home. A staggering and sobering 22% of these local men enlisted did not return to our District.

New Zealand service personnel surged ashore at the foot of the rugged cliffs on the Dardenelle Peninsular at what is now known as ANZAC Cove.

By that evening 2,000 men had either been killed or injured.

The Allied Forces set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsular in order to open up the the narrow Dardenelles from the Aegean Sea giving Allied Navies access to the Sea of Marmara and onto the Black Sea with the aim of bringing help to Russia. The overall strategy was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey) the then Capital of the Ottoman Empire and a strong Ally of Germany. The plan to knock Turkey out of the war became a stalemate and the campaign dragged on for 8 long months with more than 50,000 ANZAC’s committed to the battlefront before the Allied Forces withdrew. Both sides suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardship during this particular campaign.

Over 11,000 Australian and New Zealand soldiers lost their lives during this campaign while the Turks lost 85,000 of their Countrymen in this campaign. Over 44,000 British Empire and French Troops (including the ANZAC’s) were killed in this campaign.

For 3 and a half more years the Great War progressed (or as it was famously quoted by Writer HG Wells as “the war to end all wars”) raged across Continental Europe and the Middle East.

For Australia, World War 1 remains the costliest conflict in terms of death and casualties. From a national population of fewer than 5 million people, 417,000 service personnel enlisted, of whom more than 60,000 were killed and another 156,000 were wounded, gassed or taken Prisoner.

It is the story of my late Wife’s Grandfather, Lennard Thomas Eaton Taplin (known as Len or nickname of Taps) who was born in Unley South Australia in 1895 who enlisted in Sydney in 1915 (Service No 6994) into the 5th Field Company Engineers and after training in England he served for 9 months as a Private and Sapper in France.

In January 1918 ,5 Australian pilots photographed a block of land stretching from the Turkish Front lines to 51 kms deep into the Turkish territory often under heavy fire and the constant threat of the plane being downed. This mapping assignment was completed successfully and significantly aided the War effort on this Front.

In March 1918 Len left the Middle East for further duties, flying a Sopwith Camel plane with 4th Squadron AFC in France.

He scored his first aerial victory on the 17th July 1918 south west of Estaires and was accredited with 12 official aerial victories before the end of the War. In the September, Len commenced duties as a “Balloon Buster” where his assignment was to bring down the German Observation Balloons over Fromelles and at other nearby Western Front sites. He was accredited with downing 4 Observation Balloons over the coming few days.

On the 5th September 1918, Len Taplin’s combat days ended when his Sopwith Camel was downed only a few hundred yards short of the German Front lines as he endeavoured to nurse his badly damaged plane back to friendly territory. He was taken Prisoner and was not released from being a POW until 1919 and returned home to Australia on the 23rd August 1919.

Len was one of the “lucky” aviators and service personnel to have survived his war time experience. Tens of thousands of Australians and New Zealanders were not so fortunate, and were never to see their precious “Homeland” again.

I have been fortunate to have visited the Australian War Memorial on 3 occasions and more recently I have viewed and experienced the re-enactment of the WW1 aerial dog fights displayed in ANZAC Hall and can only imagine courage and skill of all pilots as they tried to control their flimsy machines while trying to fend off the opposing pilots and to avoid enemy fire, attempting to complete their mission and hopefully to land safely back on friendly soil. Of course, many aviators did not make it back safely after these flights.

Lieutenant Lennard Taplin was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and discharged from War Service in 1919.

He was only aged 24 years of age when he returned to Australia.

Post the War, Lennard continued with his flying career and was a pilot (along with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith) with the fledging Western Australian Airlines (Australia’s first scheduled airline) established by Sir Norman Brearley and the airline carried initially mail and then passengers from Perth to the North West.

Lennard subsequently settled in his adopted home town of Port Hedland and returned to “normal life” remarrying and raising a family of 4 boys and became a local identity as both the local butcher, operating the local electricity plant and was also the local undertaker. In 1947 he unsuccessfully contested the State Seat of Pilbara and was defeated in a By-Election as the first election was a tied Vote with the Sitting Parliamentarian.

While this is only one story of one service man, the bravery and courage of all service personnel (home and abroad) during wartimes and conflicts can be told many times over.

Today we also recognise the recent centenary of the Ending of World War 1 declared on Armistice Day (or Remembrance Day) on the 11th November 1918, and we pay tribute to the significant role that the ANZAC’s along with Allied Forces played during this major Conflict.

With us recently remembering the 100 Years since the End of WW1 it is fitting that there is a Special Display currently at the Australian War Memorial titled “After the War” which explores the personal stories of hope, loss and love of ordinary Australians whose lives have been altered by war, from those who served, to the loved ones left behind.

Of particular note this year, we remember the Service personnel of our District who did survive and returned back home to their families and communities to “restart their normal lives” again including returning back onto their farms, taking up new land or to work as shearers, fencing contractors, farm hands or pursue their chosen profession both in this District and across the State and around the Nation. Many were to start or add to their families so our communities could grow and blossom.

Many of the returned service people never or rarely spoke of their “Wartime experiences” and

suffered greatly over the years trying to keep their war time experiences to themselves, often in an attempt to protect their families from the horrors that they had seen and experienced.

and make to ensure that we live in freedom and relative peace today and it is hoped this will continue well into the future.

All we should seek from today is for the Sadly, as history has shown us, World Peace was collective recognition of the sacrifice, only short lived and many Nations were again in commitment and unselfish devotion by those Conflict from 1939 onwards for 5 and a half years men and women who served and continue to in World War 2. serve so valiantly for our country and what they strongly believed in.

A fair bit goes down on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram every month. People share photos with friends and family, key board warriors promote their cause of the minute, funny videos are filmed and sold to popular pages AND your favourite local businesses and organisations share all sorts of great things like what they’ve been up to, new services they have on offer and an insight into who they are and how they work.

This month, Visit Quairading WA (a social media presence run by Quairading CRC) and the Quairading Farmer’s Co-op teamed up to create a very cool promotion. The Co-op had noticed an increase in customers coming from the Eastern Wheatbelt, through Quairading as an alternative to taking Great Eastern Highway to Perth. We created a series of “campaign images” encouraging travellers to “take the road less travelled” or to “take the scenic route” and developed a posting schedule for both Visit Quairading WA and Quairading Co-op to post of each of the images over the month, each with their own captions to add further value. Quairading Rainmakers supported the collaborative promotion by sharing the images also!

SLOW COOKER THAI PEANUT CHICKEN (SATAY) Recipes courtesy of dinnerthendessert.com

Oh yeah the only (and I mean only) good thing about winter is slow cooker meals. Bung it all in before work and come home to a fragrant home with dinner ready to dish-up!

INGREDIENTS

          

1 cup coconut milk (about a half a can) 1/3 cup peanut butter (smooth or crunchy, whatever your preference) 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 1 tablespoon ginger peeled and minced 3 garlic cloves minced 3 chicken breasts boneless and skinless 2 tablespoons corn-starch mixed with 2 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon lime juice Optional garnishes: chopped peanuts coriander or green onions

METHOD

Step 1: To a 5L slow cooker, add the coconut milk, peanut butter, soy sauce, honey, rice wine vinegar, ginger, garlic, and stir until combined.

Step 2: Cut the chicken breasts into one inch chunks and add to the slow cooker.

Step 3: Cook on low for 4-5 hours.

Step 4: Add the lime juice and corn-starch/water mixture to the slow cooker and stir carefully.

Step 5: Cook for an additional 20 minutes until sauce is thickened.

Step 6: Garnish with desired toppings like chopped peanuts, coriander or green onions (or all three!). *I always use thigh over breast and bone in where ever possible for a deeper flavour and more succulent meat. * Thanks to Sophie Davies for sharing this slow cooker gem *Internet image top right, real image bottom right.

QUAIRADING JUNIOR NETBALL Our 2019 season has started with our regular Friday afternoon training sessions and games. We have three teams for the season – Peacocks, Canaries and Galahs.

We have played a few inter town games on Sundays against Beverley twice and Keller/Tammin once.

We had a team head to Merredin early on Sunday 19th May to compete in the Wheatbelt Regional Championships. The Year 6 team (pictured in the photo) played in the 12 and under age group and came home finishing second in the competition. Thanks to Mel for coaching, Kelsie for umpiring and Carol for scoring.

WARRIOR WELLBEING Situational Distress—what is it?

For our small team of community educators working in the field of men's health and wellbeing, we are always challenged on what is classified as a mental illness. We realize there is a small percentage of the population who have a genetic mental illness predisposition. Situational Distress however describes a stage in our mental health and wellbeing that gives us permission to be in a space between being well and being diagnosed with a mental illness. The adoption of this language resonates with blokes and community and fosters change to take personal responsibility for our own wellbeing and health.

Our Mental Health and Wellbeing Gauge (below) shows the space (amber) that there is between being well and a mental illness diagnosis. This is a very important space, because quite often the system wants to shift us from being well straight to a mental illness diagnosis. As individuals we are born with a random capacity to handle things thrown at us in life, these situational factors can come from many places i.e. relationships, financial worries, traumatic events, physical health, pressures of what we do etc. We know that our mental health and wellbeing is a continuum and the gauge can trip from being well (green) to situational distress (amber) and to a mental illness diagnosis and back.
