FROM THE EDITOR If I had a penny (or any sort of 21st century currency that would actually be of use to me) for every remark I’ve heard this month about how close the mid way point of 2017 is… I wouldn’t have as much currency as I did post–Mutton Cup last year, but it would be a fair bit! Yep, June is a-knockin’ at the door. And what a ripper June it’s going to be! Hopefully the weather is kind to our farming friends so they can wrap up ripping up real soon and rip into one of the many ripper events and activities lined up around town this month. How many times is too many times to use the word rip? Rip. On offer this month at the Quairading CRC is a Social Media Workshop for businesses and organisations with Tori Kopke from WBN on Wednesday 14th June, Cabernet & Canvas on Friday 16th June (it’s sitting, and drinking wine, and painting a canvas, with heaps of help, oh and also cheese!) and a Farm Office Efficiencies Workshop delivered by PinG (Partners in Grain) on Thursday 22nd June. We’ve also got three more Boogie Roos sessions this term (and three more in Term Three) from 9:30am on Friday 26th May, 9th June and 23rd June. The BreastScreen WA Van will be parked at the Quairading CRC from Wednesday 28th June until Tuesday 4th July providing FREE mammograms. Appointment booking details can be found on page 28. Did you know the Quairading Club is turning SEVENTY this year! There’s a great snippet from a 1964 paper and details on how the Club is celebrating this momentous occasion on pages 20 and 21. The Quairading Golf Club have been hard at work planning what sounds to be an EPIC day of golf and fun on Saturday 24th June. The Act-Belong-Commit Invitation Day is in celebration of 50 years of Junior Golf and the 10th Scotty J Memorial Day. One of my big claims to fame, which I unashamedly make quite often, is taking out Girls Junior Club Champion one time many years ago (never mind that there were only two of us competing and I just happened to have one less 10-with-a-circle on the day!). Regardless, I’m excited to make a return to the course and I hope to see lots of you there too! Keeping using the hashtag #quairading when you’re posting local photos on social media— our readers are LOVING the Tagged Around Town snaps on page 7! Yep that’ll do. HACC CENTRE BASED DAY CENTRE: Held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. On the 2nd Thursday we will have an out of town outing going to various restaurants, cafes and places of interest, museums etc. Sometimes just for some personal shop. The 4th Thursdays will be held at the CRC with various activities, games, the odd movie day with lunch provided, give us your suggestions and ideas, we are always looking for new things to do. Anyone who has been assessed for HACC can attend on these days and we look forward to new people joining us. SPORT & REC MEN'S GOLF: On the weekend was the second round of club championships. The day was sponsored by Golden Grain Cafe. We now have the services of a visiting Exercise Physiologist from CorpFit. Accredited Exercise Physiologists specialise in clinical exercise prescription, health education and the delivery of exercise based lifestyle and behaviour modification programs or services to the prevention and management of chronic diseases and injuries. Exercise Physiologists are 4 year university trained Allied health professionals. Diseases and injuries often impact a person’s ability to lead a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle. Before we start our meeting, I would like to acknowledge that we are meeting on Noongar land and we pay respect to the original Custodians, past, present and future and welcome you all here today for this meeting. District Overview Quairading District has an area of 2040 square kilometres and is centred 168kms east of the Perth Central Business District. We have a stable population of around 1050 people in the District, with approximately 500 people on surrounding farms and 550 in Town. We have one of the largest Noongar populations in the Wheatbelt with approximately 150 Community members with a Noongar Background/Culture. Our District High school has approx 150 students up to Year 10 and the school also offers Years 11 and 12 by School of Isolated and Distance Education. Students in Years 11 and 12 work from a wonderful purpose built building and they have access to the latest technology to keep them in touch with their SIDE Teachers. Quairading is one of the three shires in the State that has a very successful Reconciliation Action Plan with the Aboriginal people. This has been established for about three years now and has brought Respect, Understanding and Harmony and closed the gap between the two cultures in our Community. The Quairading Shire flies the Australian Aboriginal flag side by side with the Australian National flag daily during open office hours, as a mark of respect for both European and Aboriginal cultures. Council have a very successful Youth Centre for all primary age children two afternoons a week, with up to forty children attending for various activities and games. The centre is run by the centre Coordinator, Michelle Nynette and Volunteers. Respect for all Cultures starts at a young age in Quairading beginning at the Quairading District High School, Sporting Clubs and the Youth Centre. Flood Event Quairading had around 320ml of rain in late January/February this year in two down pours, which caused extensive flooding and road damage around the district. The road damage bill will be in the vicinity of $8M dollars, with one road being completely destroyed, which Council is considering closing and leaving it as a water way. Council is making a Submission under the WANDRRA Scheme and also making a Bridge Claim to Council’s Insurer.

Recent Achievements in the past Twelve Months. In April 2016 our Caravan Park was reopened by the Hon Mia Davies, after the 1970’s Caravan Park was completely demolished, redesigned and rebuilt. We now have 18 grassed caravan bays, Long Stay Gravel Hard Stand bays,two large Fifth Wheeler paved sites and many grassed tent/ camping sites. A new ablution block, plus a large campers kitchen was constructed. We also have three, two bedroom cottage sites prepared ready for when Funding is available. There is the original brick and tile cottage (The Original Infant Health Centre) on site still that sleeps six and is very well used. We have 2,200sq metres of grass in the park, which is watered from our two town dams. Since opening, the park has been extremely successful with many caravan clubs coming for weekends and a constant stream of “Grey Nomads.” So far, the park has cost Council $1.1 million dollars, to redevelop with $340,000 of that coming from “Royalties for Regions.” Quairading Swimming Pool The Pool has had a complete makeover in 2016, at a cost of $3.4 M. Eleven years ago; Council recognised the pool that was built in 1958 was nearing its use by date. The original cost of the pool and amenities was approximately 25,000 Pounds which according to records added one quarter of a penny in the pound, to the General Rate to pay for the Loan to build the pool. Water to fill the pool then, came from a bore on site. So eleven years ago, Council started to put money aside each year for the Refurbishment, and by February 2016 we had set aside $2.2M in the Swimming Pool Reserve Fund. A huge effort for a small community and good management by our Chief Executive Officer Graeme Fardon and the Administration Staff. Council received $800,000 from “Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund” and $100,000 from the then Country Local Government Fund, the balance of the funds came out of our Reserve Account and General Revenue. We now have a 6 Lane, 25metre Main Pool, plus a walk in “Toddler” Pool and good size “Learn to Swim” Pool, which are covered with shade sails. The change rooms have had a complete makeover, including a new Family Friendly and Disability change room. The old pumping & filtration equipment was no longer compliant, so a complete split pump system for the new pools including a new shed was installed. The pool does run at a loss each year, but it is very necessary for our community’s health, wellbeing and our Children learning to swim. Since opening on the 17th of December last year, we have had an estimated 6000 people through the Gate. Grain Freight Route Quairading Council took on to project manage the two road re-alignments on the Quairading to Cunderdin Road in 2015 & 2016. The Estimated project cost to complete the total Realignments is $4.4M and is fully funded by the State Government Grain Freight Project. The project has been a lot of extra work for our Manager of Works and Services, Troy Newick, our Chief Executive Officer, Administration Staff and Works. It’s been a very good learning curve for all. A good financial benefit to the Quairading community, as our Manager for Works and Services has used as many local contractors as possible, to keep a large portion of money in our District. The project is expected to be finished by July or August this year.

Future Industrial Lots Council is currently working on developing new industrial blocks, of around 2,000sq metres each, on the “Old Sale Yards Site” behind the Roadhouse. The cost of the head works and Development for the blocks is enormous and Council has enlisted the support of the Wheatbelt Development Commission and Land Corp under the “Regional Development Assistance Program” to plan and hopefully Secure Funding for Stage 1. The area will also incorporate a large road train type truck bay for overnight stay. Main Roads are planning a corner re-alignment with Winmar Rd and the Main York to Merredin Road to allow 36.5 metre long road trains to turn to the left when entering from Cunderdin and travelling East. Works Depot Redevelopment Our current Major Building project is to build a new Works Depot Shed, Office and Amenities on the yellow sand pad behind the Shire Council building. At our April general meeting, we adopted a Design and Construction Tender. Project Budget is $1M for the complete job. Our old shed was built just after World War 2 of concrete and second hand timber, which after many treatments, white ants took their toll and the building was “tagged out of bounds” by Structural Engineers. We expect the new facility to be finished around August-September this year. Tier 3 Rail Our CBH Terminal has storage capacity of 250,000 tonnes of grain, with room to build more open bulk heads in the future. Quairading being a main catchment area for nearby eastern districts, we thought we would have a good chance of keeping the narrow gauge rail line open to York, as it is the only narrow gauge rail line that goes all the way to the port. Not so, the Government have seen spending money on our main roads to road freight the grain to the Standard Gauge and Port, more beneficial to all road users. Our Quairading to Cunderdin Road widening and straightening will be finished this Calender year, which will be able to deliver our grain to the standard gauge rail. Our Quairading to York road which was in urgent need of repair, will be completely rebuilt by 2019 to a 9 metre wide seal by the Main Roads Department. Main Roads propose they will then carry on from Quairading to Bruce Rock, then to Merredin, over the next 13 years with a 9 metre wide seal. Town Water Catchment and Water Supply The Quairading Town site has tremendous water catchment ability from the CBH Terminal and over Town Roads. The catchment quickly fills two 10,000sq metre dams, which we irrigate the town oval, caravan park grass area and the Quairading District High School oval. We also have a fresh water bore field, just east of our town site, with three bores equipped with submersion electric pumps. The bores can easily fill our two 135,000 litre tanks within 24 hours. Council recently installed a stand pipe with a three inch electric fill pump that can fill road work tankers in 8 minutes, compared to 45 minutes at the main scheme stand pipe. Main road works buy our water for convenience, plus it’s a huge saving of chlorinated scheme water. Council have recently had a supply point installed at the air strip to refill water bombers in case of an emergency. This has now extended the water bombing range out to Merredin. Aeroplane spray contractors also use the tank facility, which is gravity fed, down from our two 135,000lt storage tanks. Closing Council has always had a very good Annual Maintenance Programme Budget for all Council buildings which includes our current sporting facility buildings. We have so far staved off the need for a large combined sporting complex. With falling team/participants numbers and knowing large a complex will cost a huge amount of money to build and maintain in the future for rate payers, the community has not pushed hard along these lines but continues to plan for the future. There are always many new ideas for the near future, but I think that’s enough from me at the moment. QUAIRADING PHOTO CLUB Written by Russell Stacey
Thank you to all who purchased a calendar. We have covered the costs of making the calendar making a $49 profit. In March some of the members met in Fremantle where we had an informal lecture on photography by photographer Nick Melidonis combined with the Cunderdin Photo Club members. We then walked around Fremantle taking miscellaneous photos. Nick then came to Quairading and using our photos showed us how to enhance our photos using computer software. This was really interesting and taught us the many ways you can improve pics.
The members are also getting some photos sorted for the competition at the Quairading Ag Show on Saturday 7th October and maybe even have a go at entering in the Perth Royal Show competition.
Congratulations to Geoff Hall who won first prize at the photo competition held in York at Easter time in the open colour section. There were probably somewhere around another 100 photos entered. Geoff won what was a state wide competition, which maybe is as far reaching as an Australia We are having him back again on Saturday wide comp. Hey!!! Why not say it was a 12th and Sunday 13th August and holding a worldwide competition! Nicole Harwood, two day workshop at the CRC to learn to David Whyte and myself also entered photos enhance pics with computer Photoshop and in this competition Lightroom. MYTH 3: "I HAVE A TWITTER ACCOUNT, BUT NEVER GET ANY INTERACTION" Activity builds activity. If you built a Twitter page but never posted any content - it is unlikely you are giving an audience anything to interact with! But you might also consider, maybe Twitter isn't the correct platform for your business? Maybe your business is better suited for a basic website, or your audience is actually on Instagram! Takeaway tip: Ensure your target market is actually using the platform you are focusing on. Not sure where your target market is? It might take a bit of trial and error- using a few different platforms until you find one that gels with you and your consumers. Make sure you have a solid idea of your target market, and a clear brand identity. MYTH 4: "I F I GET MORE BUSINESS AT MY PUB- IT IS TAKING AWAY CUSTOMERS FROM ANOTHER BUSINESS" We completely understand this idea, and it truly shows the amazing spirit of country businesses. But let's say the additional customers you are attracting comes from a new work crew in town or from people passing through the caravan park. What if instead of "taking away" business you could actually support another pub in another area? Think of creating a virtual pub crawl across your region- each pub recommends one another and builds a strong network. Okay this one we believe, it probably isn't a myth! We understand small business owners are often time poor and have to focus on things that require your immediate attention. Unfortunately, taking the time to develop a great digital strategy is a luxury you may not have. So we have some suggestions. WARRIOR WELLBEING ARTICLE Rethinking Suicide Prevention—A Situational Approach The time has come to re-evaluate the way we approach suicide awareness and prevention! This is the challenge issued in a recent paper delivered by the Australian Institute of Male Health Studies and Western Sydney University. Renowned advocates for Men’s Health Dr John Ashfield, Professor John Macdonald and Anthony Smith propose that a significant paradigm shift is needed in order to realise a more effective national suicide prevention strategy. They argue that a ‘situational approach’ is required, one that acknowledges the more predominant association of situational distress with suicide, as opposed to the current focus on mental illness. This is precisely what we advocate at RMHI. None of us are immune to the feelings associated with being overwhelmed and challenged by specific events in our lives. These normal life ‘situations’ such as bereavement or relationship breakdown can impact greatly on our mental and emotional wellbeing. It is at these times, when we are able to draw on our innate resilience as human beings, and to see the best in others when we connect with them for support. The concern is that too often the distress we feel in certain situations aligns with symptoms that are often used to identify a mental illness such as depression. There is no doubt that depression can be a debilitating illness with associations for increased risk of suicide but it has gone from being a condition of relative obscurity to an apparent major social dilemma. The authors take this a step further and argue that ‘the current mental health narrative has been allowed to encircle, medicalise and redefine as pathological many of our common human experiences’ (Ashfield, Macdonald and Smith).

The paper’s central argument is that when it comes to suicide prevention most initiatives are preoccupied with the identification of mental illness. Instead, we need to be considering all forms of life stressors and the associated experience of distress which doesn’t necessarily embody a diagnosable mental illness but can result in suicidal behaviour. They argue that many suicides are connected to situational distress often involving issues such as unemployment, financial problems and conflict, the signs of which may be missed if we adhere to a purely mental illness agenda. We need to be looking at situational distress and how it influences the individual’s perspective. As long as the suicide focus remains mostly on mental illness people will continue to view this problem as that of a professional’s domain. Whilst tertiary services are very important their focus is on people with high intensity mental health difficulties and the associated risk issues. At RMHI we strongly support the shift to a more situational approach to suicide awareness because it promotes development of initiatives that advocate capacity building in individuals and their communities, early intervention and a primary care focus, that is ordinary people looking out for each other. WELCOME TIMERS YOUNG AND OLD! Yet another mixed bag last weekend on the 20th May, this time with Cozza’s Magoo’s taking home the cake and the league team ending up like Browny predicted. The Ressie’s started off slow against an opposition with a lot of well-deserved hype. Looking at Beverley’s last two games Cozza knew we were up for a tough match. Coz got into the boy’s at 1/4 time and it was all good from there. Blokes were getting excited around the ball and having cracks at goals (which were on target for once). Targets were getting hit, balls were marked and the plan seemed to have sunk in. Jarvis Yarran probably had around 20 bounces for the day, Alex Stacey was teaming up well all day, Norm Yarran had a blinder with 5 goals, JC Snr showed us how it’s done and Simmo got a chance to go up forward. Cozza was so pleased with the win he didn’t even care about Carlton’s result (almost). Reserves 1st Moore River Beach House: Jarvis Yarran 2nd Greenhills Inn: Alex Stacey rd 3 Quairading Club: Jesse White 4th Anderusking: Norm Yarran th Rohan Hadlow (hopefully) will be playing his 200 league game this week, let’s hope the boys can “bloody lift” and make it a memorable day for him! Things didn’t go to plan for the league boys. After scoring the first goal it quickly went downhill. With a red card thrown into the mix the boys couldn’t get up and finished 2nd to a very dominant Beverley. Thanks to Alex Stacey who doubled up and to Simmo, Hammer, Mitch Gerritzen and Braeden who ran the boundary. I didn’t see enough of the game to comment, but at least the Hockey girls won..
