From the Editor Another birthday month is about to begin! It might be a struggle to find the time to celebrate between all the things going on this month (haha, nart). There’s sure to be many birthday festivities, all month long! We’re really excited to be hosting two evening workshops with Tomorrow Man and Tomorrow Woman in late July. These have been a long time coming as we’ve been working to secure funding to cover the cost, and because their expert facilitators are in pretty hot demand! Not having participated in the sessions yet, it’s slightly difficult to explain what it is and what you’ll get out of them—but I feel pretty confident in guaranteeing you won’t regret joining in. Here’s some anon feedback from people who have completed either session: "I was apprehensive and nervous, mainly because I was unsure how this would work. I wasn't sure how I was gonna give meaningful input. But as soon as we started I was immediately at ease and impressed at the openness of the other blokes. As men we bottle things up occasionally, and then we become overwhelmed and erupt. This workshop helped me understand that we need to ask our mates the tough questions, and taught us how to ask those questions." (Blokes Night Participant) “By the end of the workshop I felt like these women I had only met briefly were my friends and we’d shared something meaningful together”. (Gather Participant).

Registrations are essential and can be made through Eventbrite, or by contacting the Quairading CRC. Both sessions are open to all ages, under 18s are required to be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Later in the month we’ll also have footy and netball back at home, ending a nine week run of away games and byes! Not to be satisfied with just playing / watching sport, Sunday 17th July will also see our beautiful Barb’s High Tea event—in memory of the late, great, Barb Simpson—and the following weekend, Saturday 23rd July, is our 6th annual Mutton Cup! The Mutton Cup is a wildly unique night out (honestly, where else have you even heard of sheep racing?!) and a major fundraiser for our football club, making it a great opportunity to invite some friends and family out/up/down/over to Quairading for the weekend and showing them a good time. Check the flyer on page 29 for more. Happy my birthday month to you all—enjoy! QUAIRADING NATURE RESERVE 2022 The Nature Reserve walking trails have had some modifications done since last walking season. The old white ant affected posts have been replaced with white painted posts and the walk up to the cairn on Nookaminnie Rock is now clearly marked with white markers from both directions.
TOWN MAINTENANCE & INFRASTRUCTURE SURVEY The Shire of Quairading want to know what our community see as priorities during the next few years. We encourage all residents to complete this short survey which will help shape our planning for the near future and help enrich the lives of residents and rate payers. The festival marks the arrival of missionaries to Erub (Darnley) Island in the Torres Strait on 1st July 1871, introducing Christianity to the region. Our Eucharist will honour this significant moment in the life of our nation on what is the first day of NAIDOC Week for 2022. Monday, 27 June - Sunday, 3 July 2022. SOCK Week (Save Our Country Kids) is a road safety initiative developed by the Narembeen Community Resource Centre to raise awareness of the impact poor decision making can have within a small community. A week of engaging activities and events that promote road safety messages, such as drink driving, speeding, distractions and fatigue; with focus on remembering those lost in road crashes within our region. In 2022, the Narembeen CRC with support from the Road Safety Commission has awarded funding to 10 other wheatbelt communities to help spread the SOCK Week message. In Quairading we’ve hosted a Wake Up Wednesday Driver Coffee Program, a Road Safety Chat and arvo tea at the Youth Centre, had wonderful support from the school with extra classroom activities and will be wrapping up the week by encouraging everyone to wear fluro and be seen this Friday!

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm June has been a lovely winter month with lots of rain, days of sunshine and chilly nights to prepare our deciduous trees for flowering and fruiting later in the year. However, it has been the rain that has really made a difference to the soil. Anyone who has been weeding lately (and who hasn’t) will have seen how moist and full of life the soil actually is. Water and more so, rain is indeed the source of life. Soil temperatures have dropped considerably by now, so anything planted now will not show much growth until spring. Therefore it’s not a good time to put in vegetables because they are ‘live fast die young sorts, however, on the other hand for shrubs and trees it is the perfect time to plant, with the exception of maybe citrus and tropical plants which like the soil to be warmer. Rose bushes and native plants put in now may look like they are just sitting there doing nothing but in fact all the activity is hidden underground where they are building root strength and network to enable them to survive the summer ahead. So go out and plant you wonderful gardeners you!

So for this month’s ‘Plant of the Month’ I have chosen vegetables. At present we have three varieties of lettuces, broccoli, two types of kale, chilli, spring onions, capsicums from summer still fruiting, English spinach, celery, silver beet, perpetual spinach, dwarf beans from summer, chicory, carrots, swede, radicchio, beetroot and tiny tomatoes in the glass house. All these we are harvesting now and still to come at various times are garlic, onions, peas, snow peas, artichokes, potatoes, leeks, broad beans, cauliflowers, brussels sprouts, cabbages, turnips and parsnips. Now the beauty of vegetable gardening at this time of the year is that there is very little input required from the gardener. Yes of course the beds must be well prepared with compost and some organic fertiliser initially but for the rest the rain, sunshine and cool temperatures do their magic and everything The QGLG will meet next month, July 29th grows, producing beautiful nutrient rich at 10am at the CWA hall and we look leaves, flowers and fruits. warm till their second leaves form and then they can be repotted into larger pots until they are ready to go into the summer veggie bed. Plant – as mentioned above every native plant, bare rooted plant and roses can be planted in July. Harvest – I mentioned above all the veggies we are harvesting; we’re also picking oranges, lemons, limes and mandarins. Things to do – luckily there is not a lot of sowing, planting and harvesting to do this month because there certainly lots of jobs to do in July! Towards the end of the month roses should be pruned, trim to shape after blooms have finished on camellias; split daylily clumps, tidy up deciduous climbers and creepers such as Virginia creeper and Boston Ivy, keep on top of annual weeds, mulch and compost azaleas in readiness for flowering, feed growing bulbs for next year’s flowers with a high potash fertilizer, cut off spent proteas flowers also taking some stem off at the same time, aerate bare lawn patches with a garden fork, prune grape vines, cover heat loving plants like mangoes with shade cloth to protect from frost, liquid feed spring flowering annuals to promote good flowers and don’t forget those plants under your eves still need watering even when it’s raining regularly. The Hinkley Family As prepared and read by Darryl Caporn at the Hinkley Way event last month. The Hinkley family, like many other pioneers, came to Australia from England. Our Grandfather, Valentine Gulanare Hinkley was born at Eden Hope, Victoria in 1887. He was number 10 of 15 children. 3 girls and 12 boys. In 1905 several Hinkley boys left Victoria and sailed to Albany from there they worked clearing land and shearing in the Gnowangerup district. In 1911 Val, Alex and Roy continued on and ended up in the Quairading district. They were employed as shearers by the Forrest Family on Cubbine Estate. Obviously, the area was appealing to Val, and he acquired land south of the town on the Corrigin Road in 1913 (now owned by Gordon Taylor). He was able to acquire more land next to the town when the opportunity arose.
In 1916 Val (fondly known as VG) married Constance McDonnell from Beverley. They had 6 children (2 girls and 4 boys), Tom, May (Caporn), Jack, Patricia (Allsop), Allan and Terry. In the mid 1920s they built a house on the corner of McLennan Street and Charlton Street (opposite the school). Around the same time the shopping building on Heal Street and the corner of Cubbine Road (opposite the Hotel) were also built. They became known as the Hinkley buildings, and they are still there today. Three generations of the Hinkley family have farmed in the district until recent years when Gary and Terry sold their property. On behalf of the Hinkley Family, I would like to thank the Shire and the people concerned for nominating the Hinkley name for the Light Industrial Area. It seems very appropriate for this area to be named Hinkley Way as the land was owned by the Hinkley family for many years. VG was a very active community member (along with many other pioneers) in the development of the Quairading Town and District. So I am sure all his descendants would be very proud to see the Hinkley name honoured by naming the street Hinkley Way. Thank you. PAGE 48

2022 Quairading Ag Show Saturday 8th October 2022 10am – 10pm EXHIBITION HALL Checking out the contents of the Exhibition Hall and Livestock Pavilion rated highly in the survey we conducted earlier in the year, so we’ve been busy making a few tweaks to the Show Schedule. We’re hoping this will encourage even more exhibit entries and give showgoers even more fabulous creations to enjoy. Please note that the Show Schedule is on track to be available by the end of July. KIDS WORKSHOPS Two free workshop opportunities will be on offer for the kids on show day. One will be with the very cool Junkadelic – Brass Band crew, creating musical instruments out of junk and the other with Peg Davies – Lessen with Peg, getting down and (not so) dirty with gorgeous garden worms. SCARECROW COMPETITION Has your family started planning your unique scarecrow construction for entry in this year’s show? A traditional scarecrow was usually a crossed timber figure that was dressed and stuffed to give it some shape. RECYCLING $$$ The Quairading CWA branch has kindly offered to DOUBLE the prize money on offer in the Recycling Section. We suggest you start thinking about creating a sculpture made from recycled farm machinery & tools or household utensils, a piece of artwork made from recyclable/reusable food packaging materials or an upcycled item of furniture. RURAL AMBASSADOR COMPETITION Quairading has a proud history of quality Rural Ambassador (and prior to 2000, Showgirl) entrants. 2022 is no exception and we congratulate Jack Richards on being the latest addition to a long list of outstanding entrants. Jack’s interests include football, cricket and tennis and he recently played a lead role in Quairading - Curtain Raisers’ production ‘Rock of Ages’. Jack is keen to promote the benefits of living in rural communities and ensuring the future of country sport. He plans to continue volunteering and contributing to our local organisations. News from the Bull Pen So after 9 rounds of footy have been played, our League team are sitting second on the ladder behind Cunderdin with only percentage separating the two teams. Both with 8 wins and 1 loss, our next fixtured game on Sunday 17th July is set to be a doosey! After a defeat in round 2, Cunderdin will be out for blood and I predict some pretty ferocious footy. Make sure that you come along and cheer the boys on as loud as we can. Our Ressies team hasn’t been fairing as well, but all credit to Ryan and the boys for putting their best foot forward each game and giving it their all. It is certainly a hard gig when you are on the losing end each week, but it also best shows our tenacity and spirit as a club, sticking together, supporting each other, building each other up and not dwelling on the losses. We are a TEAM and there is no I in team. We all work best when we come together through good and bad. So much has happened since last penning the news. We’ve had lot’s of in’s and out’s! An ever revolving door apparently. With injuries and so forth, Dilly has been working tirelessly to recruit new players so that we can still put up 2 competitive teams. Unfortunately one of our big recruits, Ian Richardson had to leave us after a bit of a knee injury and one of our 3rd year players, Chris Scafidi did his ACL last week in the mud. Best of luck to Chris for his surgery on 12th July. Kane Mitchell also tweeked his ankle in our last game but hopefully two weeks off will give it a bit of time to mend. To fill the gaps we welcome to the Bulls, young gun Cameron Sharp and ex WAFL player Matthew Hunt. It will be exciting to see when the team finally comes together. In the reserves we lost Ciaran Allsop for the season with a shoulder back in round 2 and a handy new recruit in Daniel Hayward with a knee in round 6. Between injuries and outs it’s been challenge to say the least for Ryan to get a team together each week, but he has. A couple of young blokes have come on board—Wayne ‘Buddy’ George, who is not yet 14 years old, but plays an awesome game of footy and Alfie Taylor and also a couple of old fella’s. Welcome back to the fray Nigel Gelmi and Brother Grub—Graeme McHenry. Both donned the white shorts for the wettest, muddiest, grossest day of footy and both loved it! LAST BULL IN THE PEN We have now culled 40 Bulls from the bull pen. Those 55 left are getting a little nervous as the next draw gets closer. With 3 home games to come, 30 more pens will be cleared, with an extra 10 being drafted out on our final home game on Sunday 14th August. This will then leave us with a final cull of 10 before the massive auction off of the blank 5 pens to give the lucky owner/s a 3 in 10 chance of winning some serious cash $$. Of course, you have to be there to bid and this will all take place at our wind up and trophy presentation event. Stay tuned for a date! WHAT’S COMING UP? • We have a couple of weeks off with a fixtured bye this weekend and then the Nutrien Ag Country Week Event the following week. Whilst most of us can sit back and relax, it will be business as usual for a dedicated and talented few who are off to play in the championship event. Massive shout out to our very own Tom Lee who has taken on the coaching role for the Avon Division 1 squad and best of luck to our players joining him—Freddie Clutterbuck, Sean Hayes, and Lachlan Gelmi. Kane Mitchell was also meant to be joining them but unfortunately sustained an ankle injury during last weekend’s game against Federals. Also congratulations and best of luck to Lachlan Dann, Declan Mills and Anthony Hayden who will be participating in the Colts Carnival in the Northern Suns team that same week. We hope you all have a few wins and a great experience and play some great footy. Please don’t get injured!! • Sunday 17th July will be our first home game since the end of May. We will be up against Cunderdin who sit top of the ladder for League and Ressies, so a huge challenge ahead of us and much support needed to cheer our boys on. This will also be our annual Barb’s High Tea day, which if weather permitting, we may just have to have outside on the sidelines. Everyone is most welcome to celebrate food, friends and footy—all the things that Barb was so passionate about. Please bring a plate of afternoon tea to share. • Saturday 23rd July is our MUTTON CUP!! In footy we take on the Kats, which is always high class and hard fought. Then after that we can get on down to the Ag Shed and Dad’s Bar for our annual sheep racing event. Make sure that you read the form guide to get the best pick of the mob and perhaps get out the back to check out the racers so that you are a full bottle and can place a bid on your favourite runner. The Belles will once again be providing yummy lamb and slaw rolls for tea and ROGUE is back with live music to dance the night away. • Sunday 31st July—off to York to play the Roos • Saturday 6th August—our 3rd go against the Beverley Redbacks. Will be a must win for our Ressies and with 1 each way to this point, the Bulls would love to take home the win in the League to tip the scales in our favour. • Sunday 14th August—Final home and away game of the season and a home game against Railways. A big day this one. As well as hoping to take out 2 final wins for the season, we are hoping to host players from the 1962 A Grade premiership team and maybe have them tell a yarn or two about the old days. It will also be our Patron’s tea evening which will lead into our medal count. Yes, a different format to how it’s been done for a while, but we figured we’d like to get the count out of the way so that when it comes to our windup, we can just do the presentations and the party on and enjoy ourselves. • Sunday 4th September—Quairading host the Preliminary Finals. All hands on deck. Hopefully our boys will have gone straight through to the grandy!

Warrior Wellbeing Tips for Integrating Work and Family Life One of the main issues that confront families and relationships is trying to achieve a balance between work and home life. The word balance tends to indicate a 50/50 arrangement however that’s a big ask. It’s more appropriate to talk about work and home integration to ensure we don’t get too out of balance.

With NAIDOC WEEK from the 3rd July until 10th July it will be a fitting to celebrate THE COMING OF LIGHT festival on Sunday, 3rd July at 9.00 a.m. at St Faith’s Church, Quairading. The festival marks the arrival of missionaries to Erub (Darnley) Island in the Torres Strait on 1 st July 1871, introducing Christianity to the region. Since their arrival and with the establishment in 1900 of the Anglican Diocese of Carpentaria, Torres Strait Islanders have been faithful members and leaders in the Church. Our Eucharist will honour this significant moment in the life of our nation. OPEN HOUSE is an invitation to members of the Quairading Community to enjoy each other’s company over refreshments from 5 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. on Friday, 22nd July at St Faith’s Church, Quairading. It will mark almost twelve months since the Rev’d Canon Dr Philip Raymont took up appointment as the Anglican Priest in Quairading and he wishes to show his appreciation to the community for the manner in which it has warmly welcomed and accepted him into its midst. Saints Priscilla and Aquila are the patron saints of marriage. All couples married in our local churches are particularly welcome to attend the service and give thanks for their married life.
St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School: The School’s Patronal Festival is the Feast of Mary, Mother of our Lord. It is celebrated on Monday, 15th August. Please collect meals from hospital kitchen at 11:45am and return eskies as soon as possible. There will be a tester meal with the delivery on most days, please be aware of this and ensure it is not given to any clients. 41/2 litres of petrol is available to each driver to help cover costs.
