FROM THE EDITOR *don’t mention it’s my birthday month* *don’t mention it’s my birthday month* *don’t mention it’s my birthday month* It’s my birthday month!

Dang. I tried to kick off another way, but the impending annual festival of celebrating another year of surviving and thriving(!) is just toooo exciting.

It’s exciting because it’s just such a fabulous time of year. Landscapes are looking lush and green, it’s such good coat and boots weather (have I already treated myself to online shopping a new set “as an early birthday present to myself”, but of course!), there’s footy to watch on the weekends, fires to light, roasts to slow cook and mulled wine to brew.

There’s other things though too—that probably interest you far more than my self-indulgent festivities. The QARRAS are gearing up for their annual Quiz Day (we hear they’ve upgraded to the Town Hall to accommodate expected large numbers of quizzers!). We’re hosting another monthly Movie Arvo at the CRC (aussie sheep-farming dramatic comedy, Rams!) on Thursday 1st. There’s a Tiny Tots First Aid Course (page 13), a Pop-Up Shop (page 15), a Mutton Cup (page 17) and more (just read all the pages!).

Looking through to early August, we’re very proud to be hosting a Mental Health First Aid Course, and delighted to be offering 16 places FREE OF CHARGE to local community members. This course is usually around $300 but we’ve been able to secure grant funding (thanks to Wheatbelt Business Network submitting a grant application on behalf of a handful of Wheatbelt communities) to reduce the financial barrier to make sure we can get these important skills into our community. 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness. Mental Health First Aid teaches people the skills to help someone who they’re concerned about.

We’re also currently in the middle of a few small grant applications (Children’s Week, Thank a Volunteer and the like). If you’ve got an idea for a community event, activity or initiative that we can throw our time and some grant funding at—let us know! Yes we’ll rope you into helping bring the idea to life, and yes you’ll enjoy that.

Lastly, as much as I love the Wheatbelt in the Winter, I’ve also become a huge advocate of a jaunt north to the warmth after recently being lucky enough to spend a weekend in Darwin with some boarding school friends AND a week in Kununurra with family and friends for my brother, Sean’s, wedding! Both were incredible locations to explore and make special memories with wonderful friends. If you’ve got the means and you’re contemplating treating yourself to a trip, do it! And invite me along!

Loose Stitches Today (Monday 21st June) is the shortest day of the year and the coldest I think, as I am typing this my phone tells me it is 9.2 degrees but feels like 0.8 degrees.

So now we are at the ‘hump day’ as far as short daylight hours we should feel a bit warmer tomorrow as the day should be longer!

We have some big days planned at Loosies in the coming months and we are starting off with a:

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm The first month of winter is over and I think we can all agree that June was a good month. Good in that there was plenty of rain to water crops already in but not so much that seeding couldn’t finish. Gardens were watered and refreshed while the soil was still warm enough to sustain root growth. The last weeks of June gave us a taste of what winter is like in the Wheatbelt; chilly mornings followed by glorious days filled with bright sunshine. You can probably tell I love winter. It’s probably because I love that my plants are happy and that the soil is happy and thriving with life.

Water and light are the building blocks of life and this is exactly what we have during the months of May to September. Anyway enough of my musings…. The Garden Club meeting is on the last Friday of the month June 25th at the Quairading Garden and Gift Shop at 10am, everyone is welcome.

Plant of the Month – this month’s plant is a real treasure; Callistemon ‘Little John’ is a very popular compact bottlebrush which has dark red flowers and blue-gray foliage. In my Mediterranean garden it is being used as an informal hedge where its red flowers and lush growth define the border between the central path and the large garden bed. But it doesn’t have to be used as a hedge it does well in rockeries, as a general garden shrubs in small or large gardens. It is suited to most soils and is well suited to our climate in that it withstands moderate frosts and copes with dry hot spells once established. As far as I’m concerned it has only one down side and that is that because it’s a hybrid it doesn’t produce pollen so is not bee friendly, but besides this small fault it is certainly worthy to be in our gardens. This is a great time to plant this little Callistemon so that it will be well established before summer.

It’s time…

Sow – many spring-flowering annuals can be direct sown now, like Californian Poppy, Lobelia, Marigold, Primula and Alyssum. Broad beans and peas should be sown now.

Plant – any native trees and shrubs planted during June will have time to settle in and develop a good root system before summer. Bare rooted trees and roses can be planted during July. Jerusalem Artichoke tubers can be planted now as can all winter vegetables and herbs.

Harvest –Mother Nature has taken care of all the colds and flues that are about at this time of the year by providing all the citrus you could ever need. Early Navel oranges, mid season mandarins, Myer lemons, Eureka lemons and limes are in abundance at Eaglewood Farm. In the vegetable garden there are broccoli, lettuce, English spinach, perpetual spinach, rocket, radicchio, bitter greens, Bok Choi, celery, Tuscan Black kale and carrots. Winter herbs like Lemon Balm, Parsley, Marjoram, Oregano, Thyme, Mint and Sage are beginning to grow lush and healthy again.

two days. Leave rose pruning till the end of July. Use Drought Shield and water with seaweed liquid to help plants handle the cold weather. Lightly prune winter flowering Sasanqua Camellias, Proteas and Grevilleas. Split Day Lilly clumps and Onion and Garlic Chive clumps. Prune vines such as Wisteria Virginia Creeper and Boston Ivy while they are dormant so that their shape and reach is clearly visible.

Move Orchid Pots into the winter sunshine. Allow potted indoor plants to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. Keep on top of winter weeds while they are small and definitely don’t allow them to go to flower. Spread compost and well rotted manure all over your garden to slowly feed your soil over winter. Almond trees, which are the first of the orchard trees to bloom, need to be fertilised during July. Cut back to ground level the Asparagus fronds which by now should have turned yellow, dress with slow acting chicken pellets then cover the bed with aged manure. Early July is a good time to take cuttings from your Conifers. Take tip cuttings of about 10 cms long, dip into hormone powder and put into community pots of 3 parts potting mix 1 part perlite, keep moist but not wet and in bright indirect sunlight. Cover with a plastic bag tied off at the bottom to keep the moisture constant. Whoever said winter is a quiet time in the garden didn’t live in the Wheat Belt!

Rural Ambassador Entrant 2021 The Rural Ambassador Competition is a national competition aimed at young adults from rural areas who have a passion for living and working in their communities. The competition aims to discover the next generation of rural leaders who have the desire to represent and promote their community, their region and their state.

My name is Britt Hadlow and I have been lucky enough to have been asked to be the Quairading Ag Society’s representative as a Rural Ambassador for 2021.

I am currently residing in Beverley, though I am heavily connected to Quairading having being born and completed my schooling here up until year 10 before attending Santa Maria College to year 12. I was raised on my parent’s farm in Dangin, where my dad and brother are still farming today. I was born into a farming and sporting family, so I spent most of my afternoons either playing hockey, netball, tennis, golf or at the pool. I have a lot of fond memories driving our old bomb car around the paddocks, playing on hay bales, camping out on the back lawn, when my friends were over running out into the bush and getting lost for hours and stinking hot “Hadlow” Christmas’s running through the sprinklers, taking my cousins from the city out to the dams to catch yabbies for Christmas dinner and a classic Hadlow sing-a-long while my dad played the guitar.

My childhood and upbringing gave me some really great values to base my life around. I have a supportive, hardworking nature and an eagerness to build a sense of Community around me wherever I go. I am lucky enough to still be friends with the girls that I schooled with from kindy and we still catch up on a regular basis. It’s been pretty amazing to watch us all go from little kids growing into successful, intelligent women – whether it is careers, travel or relationships, or becoming wives or mothers.

I consider growing up in the Country an incredibly unique experience and something you can’t quiet explain to someone who hasn’t lived themselves – and I think I am pretty lucky to have experienced it myself.

My main interests are hockey and the Arts, two things I am really fortunate to have been able to throw myself into since moving back to the Country in 2016 to live with my partner in Beverley.

While I am not living in Quairading, I am currently working full time at the Shire of Quairading as a Technical Services Officer and also recently started studying an intensive diploma in Project Management. I have been involved in Curtain Raisers performances over the last 10 years and the and currently involved in the local film company, Fractured Visions Films’ Sci-fi Horror movie, High Strangeness. I spend a lot of time here with my family (and new little nephew!) and enjoy attending events around town when I can.

As soon as I moved back to Beverley, I was so excited to throw myself into the community, my first move was joining the Beverley Redbacks Hockey Club of which I am now the Secretary of (fraternising with the enemy I am sure, if you ask any of my family who have been heavily involved in the footy and hockey club since forever!). I also am on the Beverley Station Arts Committee, and started an amateur Community theatre group - the Beverley Amateur Dramatics (..or B.A.D!) with a friend of mine, and we just completed our fourth production, this is something I am incredibly proud of.

I am looking forward to the experience of being a Rural Ambassador and look forward to talking to the judges about my experiences growing up, living and working in the Country and hope that whatever the outcome is, I can do myself, family and the Community proud!

Group Judging for Eastern Districts will be held on Saturday 17th July. From here, one representative will go to State Judging in September.

Warrior Wellbeing Passions and Interests vs Self-Sabotage Our interests and passions are an integral part of our ongoing health. They underpin an oftenneglected part of our holistic wellbeing and health, known as “social-spiritual wellbeing”.

As blokes we need to constantly challenge ourselves to experience more and engage with new opportunities. There is more to us than just our occupations and we need to explore the things that excite and interest us. These passions and interests, the things that make us tick, are where we as blokes get a sense of purpose and identity. Often however, our hardwired competitive nature, and need to win can sabotage us.

A few years ago, at age 40, I pulled on the boots to play my first ever season of AFL footy. I wanted to be involved as my eldest son was playing and I had visions of playing out the season in reserves and having some great father/son bonding time. As it turned out, he went straight into the league team after only two reserves games and I played for a couple of seasons, having a ball with a great bunch of blokes.

Sometimes, mates with outstanding footy pedigrees would say to me “How do you do it?” and honestly, I couldn’t understand their question. I was slow, lacking in skills and pretty unfit, but I was having fun, and getting a little bit fitter. I loved it! I only understood their plight a couple of years later when I got back into a form of motorsport that I had been reasonably competitive at in my 20’s, rallying.

My mate’s question about “how could I possibly enjoy footy in my 40’s?” suddenly became clear. I didn’t have a younger footyself against which to measure; my next game could still have been my best even if that best wasn’t very good at all. My feelings about rallying suddenly made his feelings about footy so much clearer.

This serves as an illustration that our competitive natures can sometimes get in the way of us engaging with a new passion or interest. It might take moving out of our comfort zone to a new hobby or past-time to give us the space we need so that we are not constantly measuring ourselves against our old markers of competence or manhood.
