Guys, you know what month it almost is?

Flippin’ birthday month! As excited as I will always be for birthday month, I feel a little jipped at loosing a few months this year which has made birthday month roll around a little too quick. I’m not quite ready to accept that I’m about to be firmly in my late 20s as opposed to the rosey mids.

But alas, age is just a number and time is but a construct and there are too many glorious things going on to worry about either. Said glorious things include sunrises that you don’t even have to wake up before 7am to catch, crops jumping out of the recently seeded dirt, great supply of winter citrus for great supply of baked goods and tarts AND the lifting of restrictions in WA which will soon allow us to drink a beer at a pub whilst standing up.

Man, what a time to be alive.

We’ve made good use of our new found freedoms here at the Quairading CRC, last week hosting a fabulously chatty Business Breakfast and this week hosting an eagerly anticipated Low Waste Living Workshop. We’ve got a couple more activities up our sleeve for July (keep an eye on the Passion Sheet and our social media) and are even working with the local Quairading Photo Club to help upskill some members to allow them to fully participate in the online side of their monthly competition. Collaborations like this are literally our jam—and actually another great example of the many ‘glorious things going on’!

Another eagerly anticipated happening, is the reopening of the Quairading Community Gym this Saturday at 5am. Bets are on for how many will be fighting for the honour of first swipe card through the door! Speaking of, here’s your reminder to find your swipe card—and if you can’t, pop into the Quairading CRC and we’ll hook you up with a newy.

QUAIRADING VFRS We have resumed meetings every second Tuesday of the month at 6pm with training sessions every third Sunday of the month at 8am. Social distancing will be practiced as well as hand sanitising, all are welcome.

QUAIRADING VINTAGE CLUB Next meeting is our AGM and will be held on Saturday July 18 at 11am. This will be followed by a 2 course lunch at 12pm.

A letter from Terry Dick In my grief at the loss of my precious wife, Beryl, I would want to express my deep gratitude to all those who have been tremendous support both at the time of Beryl’s passing and in contributing to make her farewell so memorable.

To the ambulance officers, Trista Fontana, Von Emmanuel, Colin Fairhead and Di Wallwork and the nursing staff at the Quairading Hospital (Deepika, Jennifer and Anthony) who, early on that Anzac Day, spent an enormous time trying their all to revive Beryl, I am extremely grateful and full of admiration for the work you did and the work you always do in our community.

Thank you to the Quairading Police, Lindsay and Ed, and also to John Hancock (who was always a very good friend to Beryl) and especially to Tony Colfer from Northam for their great assistance in organising the funeral service. They all displayed an understanding and empathy that, I think, went beyond their job description. The huge support from Alfred Dick and the Henry and George families in this organisation of the funeral was a great weight off my shoulders.

I particularly want to thank Graeme Fardon and the Quairading Shire for its sympathy, understanding and organisational skill in assisting the funeral and wake to go so smoothly.

My very grateful thanks to all the extended families for their donations of food and money and support for me.

I also wish to thank Red Ochre Band and Eric Dalgety, Billy Narrier, Michael Alone, Alex Councillor and Craig Pickett for their wonderful musical contribution.

Thank you also to our CRC for going above and beyond to assist in all aspects.

To Beryl’s three sisters, Nancy, Beatrice and Debra, your support and love and assistance is something I will always treasure.

My sincere thanks also to all of those who stood at the front of the funeral and so clearly spoke of Country and Beryl. To Dallas Yarran, Claire Maguire, Gemma Stack, John Ford, Rob Eades and Gary Taylor. Special thanks to Laurel Henry and Cara Dalgety for their reading of the Eulogy.

To Natalie Henry, Jasmine Yarran, Jesse George, Janelle Nundle and Reg Yarran Junior, I thank you deeply for your relentless work on producing the Tribute Booklet, the funeral booklet, eulogies and the slide show with such skill and expertise.

And lastly, very special thanks to all those who turned up for the funeral, it was a heart-warming sign of the esteem in which Beryl was held in our community and regions.

National Roll Out of Electronic Prescribing – As an outcome of

Covid 19, the Australian Government has accelerated the delivery of a nationwide electronic prescribing program. Changes have been made to Commonwealth legislation to recognise an electronic prescription as a legal alternative to paper prescriptions. We are preparing ourselves here at QMP to implement this option to patients as soon as it is available.

In theory there will be a barcode, or “token” emailed to you for your pharmacist to scan. If you would like to update your patient profile in preparedness for this; please contact the surgery so we can add your email address. Some of the benefits of electronic prescriptions include:  More effective management of refill requests;  Support telehealth services by removing the requirement for a patient to  collect a paper script.  Providing the ability to reduce the number of face to face interactions,  Helping to limit the spread of infectious diseases.

IMMUNISATIONS Flu Vaccines Private Flu Vaccine: We ordered a 2nd batch of private flu vaccines as there was such a huge demand- however we are already down to minimal stock so first in best dressed. COST $20 Shingles: If you are between the ages of 70-79 years and not received a shingles vaccine yet you are eligible under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) to have for free.

Women’s Health and Mental Health Doctor Dr Ellie Brusasco visits Quairading Medical Centre for 2 days every 6-8 weeks. 

Women’s Health and Mental Health ONLY.

This service is in addition to the regular GP (not instead of) – who will see you for all other health concerns.



The exception to this is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who may see Dr Ellie for any health problem.



Appointments are Government funded-free to patients.

QUAIRADING COMMUNITY GYM Reopening Saturday 27th June, from 5am!

Thank you for the patience of all members throughout the closure of our community gym due to state government COVID-19 restrictions.

With the roadmap to recovery entering Phase 4 this weekend, our unstaffed gym can once again be open to members.

Quairading Junior Golf: Term 3

The Quairading Golf Club are delighted to offer Junior Golf to all children aged from Pre-Primary to Year 10. It will look a little different this season, but still with three fabulous lessons with Rob Farley, PGA coach. This is a great way to have a go at golf, even if you’ve never played before.

You will not need your own golf clubs, we have some you can borrow. Just bring a snack, water bottle, hat and a smile!

Below are the fixtures. You can choose to just do the coaching days (parents are welcome to drop children off and return to pick up at conclusion) or to do the coaching AND play social golf (we need parent help on these days to supervise kids on the golf course, which is fun and easy). We meet at the Quairading Golf Club straight after school.

Quairading Ag Show postponed

With heavy hearts but ever hopeful minds, the Quairading Agricultural Society has made the tough decision to not hold a show in 2020 and postpone our celebrations and 100th Quairading Ag Show to Saturday 9th October 2021.

While we’re hopeful that our state and country continue to emerge out the better side of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the health and safety of our community and integrity of our event remain our priority.

ALL IS NOT LOST! Our volunteer committee members have been busy as bees this morning contacting suppliers, vendors and stakeholders and working where we can to hold onto bookings for next year. We’re very fortunate to have the best vollies in the world, with a general agreement that all executive committee and coordinators continue their roles through 2021.

While we’re still awaiting a grant contract, we’ve got projects to work on over the next 12 months thanks to our successful funding application of over $80k from the Federal Government’s Regional Ag Shows grant program – including sealing the Ag Shed floor! A floor which will surely need a christening party before the 2021 show!

MEMBERSHIP Membership will not be collected for 2020, however we’d of course welcome donations to the value of your membership if you’d like to help us keep filling the kitty for those 100th show celebrations.

Loose Stitches Oh my Lordy how fast is this year going, I feel as though we missed half the year due to COVID and lock downs.

Loosies announced last month that we have our online shop (www.loosestitches.com.au) up and running and we are so excited to say that we have made sales to a patchworker in Medowie NSW and a patch worker in Ohio USA.

How good is the internet and social media for getting the word out?

Rocky put a lot of hours into our webpage taking photos of all the fabrics in the shop (hundreds of bolts), patterns and habby, it has been worthwhile. You can follow us on Instagram and Facebook as well.

We are back to having our monthly sewing get together but would ask if you could just BYO mug and observe the social distancing rules still in place. We will always provide the tea and coffee and that will never change.

After every day the work tables are thoroughly cleaned and wiped for your safety.

Business made better with breakfast As the sun rose on Friday 19th June, 24 people representing over 18 local businesses gathered (appropriately spaced) in the Quairading CRC al fresco. After warming up with a cup or two of hot bean juice from Rest A While Coffee and a delicious Hollandaise-topped Stuffed Breakfast Roll (still drooling about those) we had an excellent, hour-long, round circle discussion about all things business in Quairading!

Some interesting discussions had:  Quairading Co-op benefited well from a surge in local shopping whilst the Wheatbelt border was closed (and did an unbelievable job maintaining supplies for us all!). The additional revenue over the last few months is going toward the install of in-store air conditioning. An excellent improvement for staff and shoppers alike. Well done and thank you Quairading Coop!  Quairading Agri Services will soon be going through some visual rebranding as they become Nutrien-Ag and bid farwell to Landmark. No changes are expected in store, though word is there are a few new product lines we should all pop in and check out.  EJ is back at the Quairading Pharmacy and looked forward to welcome more shoppers in store to see some layout changes. Expect some additional changes to the look of the front of the store in coming months too.  Congratulations were abound for new Quairading Book Post owners Mick Grage and Nicky Hargraves!  Loose Stitches are back in action and successfully launched an online store during their isolated months—they’ve even made an online sale to a new customer in the USA which is excellent proof that our geographical location needn’t hold us back.

We’re looking forward to quarterly catch ups with our local businesses—with the invite open to all owners, employees and board members of all types of local retail, service, trade and agricultural businesses and beyond!

Huge thank you to local legend George Jason for taking some items to the tip for us and sneaky back to clean up all the leaves! Thanks also to the Shire team for other seeing to other maintenance jobs around the building—the area was looking spick and span for our breaky guests!

Credit: Supplied COMMUNITY Vision has been working to help support people with a disability in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of Quairading and Badjaling.

The Joondalup-based organisation joined Quairading WA on Saturday to work with Balladong Noongar Communities traditional owners to design inclusive recreational activities that would provide social connections and support with positive health and wellbeing outcomes.

Elders were also asked to identify pictures and share related stories to help connect the community with their historic past.

The project stems from a State Government grant to provide disability support services and create connections between people with disability and the communities they live in.

“The support Community Vision provides to our community is instrumental in its development,” Balladong Noongar Communities traditional owners community manager Murray Yarran said.

“It’s important we focus on cultural teachings that encourage our community to wholeheartedly adopt the Noongar way.

“We try to inspire everyone to learn to love and appreciate our art, music, literature and love for the land.”

Community Vision chief operating officer Yvonne Timson said the aim was to “empower and unite the community with their Aboriginal cultures and remove any existing barriers between age and culture”.

“This was our second visit to this rural community and we have formed a real connection out there, which we hope to continue to build on,” she said.

Inspiring figure bridged cultures

Shared from the 6/19/2020 The West Australian eEdition Beryl Dick Indigenous leader and musician Born: Quairading, 1962 Died: Quairading, aged 58 Beryl Dick was born in the Quairading District Hospital in 1962 to Mick and Laurel Henry and rose to become one of the iconic and much lauded Indigenous women in the modern history of rural WA. Beryl was born in an era of significant change and upheaval for Indigenous Australians who were at the beginning of their struggle to regain their identity and status as the original inhabitants of this country.

She was a fearsome advocate for her people but more importantly for her community no matter its creed or colour. She was a passionate messenger to a younger generation who were also desperate to rediscover their identity and their culture and Beryl was able to provide that bridge through her culture and through her love of the arts and sport. She loved playing sport too and was a dab hand on the basketball court and in the indoor cricket arena.

Her love for sport and her courage and commitment on the sporting field knew no bounds as she was a fierce competitor. She was also very versatile as exemplified once when the call went out at a high school fete in Northam for someone to step into the ring with a big hulking six-foot bruiser. Beryl was up to the challenge and much to the amazement of her friends, she stuck her hand up and stepped into the ring. A short while later Beryl stepped out of the ring, having put paid to her formidable opponent.

It was this indomitable spirit that carried her throughout her life and it was these personal challenges that she set for herself that forged that strong will and determination that exemplified her spirit.

Beryl met her husband Terry at Muresk College where he was making out that he was a really good footballer. Beryl gave him the cold shoulder until a few days later at the local squash centre when Terry and his mates all turned up. Upon seeing the “talent” Beryl said she would have the one in the cowboy boots and that was Terry.

That was her sense of humour which carried her through the good times and the dark times of her life. She often jokingly referred to her husband “as that one-night stand that lasted 38 years”.

Beryl loved family because she was a lover of people — young and old, big and small.

It was not easy for both Beryl and Terry when they discovered she could not have children. But as they say, “The Lord works in mysterious ways” and one day out of the blue came a message from one of Terry’s aunties which said “come and pick your baby up”.

This child was a gift to this family. He became known as Alfred Dick, and Beryl became the best mother in the world courtesy of this life-changing gift and the love and affection that Alfred delivered to their lives. Alfred was and still is — her baby boy.

Creatively Beryl had enormous talents and skills and it seemed there was nothing that she could not do. Beryl was an influential leader in the arts community and her influence encouraged Indigenous women across the regions to become active players in the art scene.

She was also a very talented musician and her powerful singing voice was often described as angelic. There is no doubt that it was this voice which saw her music career blossom.

She became part of a band called Street Workers which gained a big following as it toured throughout the regions. This success prompted the band to change its name to become known as the Red Ochre Band. At its prime, it supported acts such as Paul Kelly and Archie Roach.

Sadly, illness began to take its toll on this inspirational woman as she fought off diabetes, coped with a triple heart bypass and dealt with the ravages of cancer — but never once did she let illness dominate her life, such was her resilience.

Beryl always said that one of the highlights of her life was being asked to do the Welcome to Country for the AFA grand final in 2019. Her other joy was to go to home football matches in Quairading where she and her husband Terry would always park in the pocket on the other side of the oval. This pocket is now known as “Beryl’s Pocket” and while Beryl’s physical presence may no longer be seen at her beloved football club, within her town or at home with her family her spiritual presence will never be far away from her family, her friends and her town, all of which she loved and in turn was loved back.

Beryl died on Anzac Day morning at Quairading Hospital just as the sun rose and the sounds of the Last Post drifted across the town site.

Quairading Sub Centre Benefit Fund Renewals Over the last few months, we have received many queries regarding the Ambulance Benefit Fund.

For an annual subscription of $93.00 per family or $56.00 for a single, you will be covered for a year for all required ambulance transport within Western Australia. To be eligible for membership with the Quairading sub centre, you must be a resident of the Quairading District.

However, if you, or your son or daughter has recently turned 18, they will no longer be eligible to be covered under a family membership. If you have recently turned 18 and wish to take out your own membership, or for any other queries, please contact the sub centre on 9645 0176 (Wednesday) or email: Quairading@stjohnwa.com.au Please note that these subscription prices are valid for the 2019/2020 financial year only and it is expected that there will be a small increase in subscription from 1 July 2020.

Reopening of Quairading sub centre The decision has been made to reopen doors to the public for all St John sites across the state. This means that from Monday 18th May, Quairading sub centre will be able to allow visitors and volunteers into the sub centre.

However, the following measures remain in place:  

In addition, all surfaces will have been regularly cleaned with disinfectant wipes.

First Aid Course in Quairading – Saturday 15 August 2020 Along with the relaxing of COVID-19 restrictions, St John WA is now able to deliver first aid training once again.

With a maximum class size of 8, the following courses will be available in Quairading on Saturday 15 August at the St John sub centre:  

News from Quairading District High School Week nine is upon us. Some days it feels like term has just begun – other days it feels like it is going on forever!

Outside of school the crops are coming up and at school the citrus trees are fruiting. Mrs Simpson’s mandarin tree in the PP has had fruit, which is lovely to see.

Recently one of our ex-students - Jessica Hadlow - became a published scientific author with her research paper that you can find here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jeb.13611 We would like to offer our congratulations to Jess. What an achievement – what an inspiration to our students! Jess’s paper was published in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology in March.

It is around this time of the year that schools begin their planning for the following year’s cohort. Two of our year ten students are confirmed with their plans for 2021 - Adam Cosgrove and Jaxon Adams have been accepted into WA College of Agriculture Cunderdin. This is great news for the boys and we wish them all the very best in their senior secondary schooling.

Reports are due to come home next week. The reports for semester one are going to look a little bit different this year to what you normally receive in semester one due to Covid disruptions. I guess, after all that, the clearest way to explain is that for much of this reporting period we have been in a state of emergency and our reports will reflect that to an extent.

Extracurricular activities we are hosting within the school at the moment include Running Club and Reading Club. Students are encouraged to run laps of the oval on Tuesday and Friday mornings, before school. They have a card with a bar code that they scan after each lap and their kilometres are recorded. Topping this week’s list was John Hippisley at 10.5km, followed by Chloe Anderson. Well done guys!

Other mornings before school our secondary students help out in the reading room listening to our younger students read. Some even help out by listening to students read on the bus! This is another example of the leadership with which many of our secondary students approach their days! Mrs Mills is very thankful for their support and tells me that the consistent practice really shows!

Our year 1/2s had a ‘100’ celebration recently, with lots of fun activities based around the number 100, supporting their development in number and math strategies.

We celebrated International Cleaners Day recently, with a special morning tea for the ladies. Since March, these ladies have had an exponentially increased workload, with the additional Covid-19 cleaning in order to keep our students, staff and community safe. As I have mentioned often in communications this term, we very much appreciate their hard work and commitment.

Mrs Kelsie Squiers hosted a Network STEM planning day in Beverley yesterday, where a small group of teachers are assisting develop plans for the region to collaborate and consistently embed and moderate STEM processes across the schools. They had a productive day and the network will continue to forward plan for their input.

Our secondary boys travelled out to Toapin Rise Farm this week on a Home Ec Food Production excursion. On the agenda was: how olive trees are cared for, how the olives are harvested and how the trees are pruned. Students learned about the development of a locally produced product and how the owners of the grove have developed their product and service considering environmental and social sustainability. Students engaged with content linking to the chemical and physical properties of olive oil and be able to identify good quality olive oil and uses for EVOO in the kitchen. The secondary girls will experience this excursion next week. Thanks to Miss Wilson for her planning and organisation, and Tarnya Fraser and Ros Berry for sharing their support and expertise.

We welcome Mr Michael Chatfield to the school as a relief Education Assistant for two weeks while Mrs Mills is away. On Friday we will also welcome Mr Jaxon Johnston who is our potential Chaplain for semester two. This process has taken a long time to come to fruition and I am very hopeful the visit will be the culmination of the process and we can engage the services of a chaplain next semester.

The cardboard cut out was placed standing next to an old decrepit wooden tank stand for effect & for even more effect converted to a black & white monochromatic pic.

Other pics were of dust storms, dead trees, disused TVs & crash helmets covered in cob webs, abandoned sheep races, old blown out truck tyres, dead plants & dry dirt trying to produce a plant to harvest, broken down farm machinery, sheep skulls, old shed doors, roads washed away by floods, the haunted old York Hospital, pic of a teary eyed child, artwork painted on walls and a street sign showing go right for DOOM & go left for GLOOM. After writing this report full of disturbing pics taken by our members our next months subject is something more Regal. Our next months subject is “HALLWAYS” and after last month’s death based pics I wouldn’t be surprised if there is lots of pics of HALLWAYS in old castles showing dead stuffed animals hanging from the walls and marble statues of famous persons heads who have been assassinated standing next to a suit of Medieval armour.

Other photos entered in the competition related to death were from another new member Kelli Brown who took a pic of a dead sheep skeleton rotting away in the QDG Outback & it got a Silver placed second prize with her first pic entered in the competition. We had a pic from Gene Stone of the end of a kangaroos life with a dead kangaroo on the side of the road going green in colour with blow flies buzzing around. Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm Well things are looking up. At the time of writing we have received almost 20mm of rain in June which of course is well below average and well below what we were hoping for but all in all the soil is now wet so run off can begin and dams can be replenished. It is delightful to see the fields looking green again and city travelers taking to our roads again to visit our towns and scenic spots.

This is our busiest time of the year at Eaglewood Farm. Most of our city friends like to visit during these colder months when the countryside is looking green and lush, there are lambs frolicking in the fields and there’s a warm fire to greet them when they get indoors. It is certainly a good time to show off our gardens because although there is a nip in the air, the roses are still flowering, there is soft carpet of autumn leaves covering the ground and there’s a sweet perfume of wattle flowers in the air.

Plant of the Month – Brugmansia or Angels Trumpet, is spectacular at the moment. It prefers the cooler weather and is flowering at its best. I have several trees, however, I must admit that I have also killed several. They don’t like being in a windy position and sometimes it’s difficult to find a protected area. The tree that is featured in this month’s photo is well protected and therefore thriving. If you have a spot that could do with a wow factor tree I would certainly recommend the Brugmansia. It has a bad reputation for being poisonous, however, this is mainly due to it being associated with a similar plant called Dattura. The Dattura or Devils Horn plant has its flowers pointing up while the Brugmansia has its flowers pointing down. In South America these trees are planted at the front of houses for spiritual protection and near bedroom windows to help with beautiful sleep. Now while I wouldn’t recommend keeping the sweet smelling flowers in a bedroom nor recommend eating any part of this tree I certainly don’t agree that it is as poisonous as its mistaken reputation.

It’s time to…

Sow – more radishes and carrots. Not much more sowing during this time as the ground is cold so most seeds will just sit there and not grow.

Plant – if not already in, onion seedlings should go in at the beginning of July and second crops of winter vegetables can also be put in now. All deciduous trees can be planted during the winter months. We’ve had a big planting regime this year at Eaglewood Farm. Before the last rains of mid June we put in over 40 trees. In the orchard we planted another grape vine, a new Chatsworth Loquat tree, a new Cherry, two new Apricots, a new A-Okay Plum tree, a Japanese Raisin tree, an Indian Guava tree, an Acerola Cherry tree and a Natal Plum tree. In the Mediterranean garden we planted two Witch Hazel trees, one Flowering Plum, four roses and a variety of native ground covers and shrubs. In the clearing to the east of

the house where we are planting for the future because we won’t ever see these trees in their full mature beauty we planted Liquid Ambers, Tulip trees, Zelkova Serrata trees, Persian Silk trees, Golden Ash trees, Flowering Plum trees, Claret Ash trees, Chinese Pistachios, Trident Maple trees and a Pin Oak tree. As you can see there is lots that can be planted at this time. Really everything but citrus and tropical trees should be planted during our winter so that they have time to develop a good root system before summer.

Harvest –lemons, limes, navel oranges and mandarins are beginning and the last of the Sundowner Apples are being harvested. In the vegetable plot we are harvesting cabbages, broccoli, sugar snap peas, snow peas, carrots, parsnips, bitter greens, English Spinach, Silver Beet, Beetroot, Radishes and lettuces. We still have some left over summer crops like Zucchini, Tomatoes, Capsicums and Eggplant which are still producing too. Not to mention a variety of herbs.

Things to do – July is rose pruning month, we do ours during the last week of July so that our first spring roses are out for mid September. After pruning check for any scale and spray with eco oil if necessary, fertilise with a high potassium fertiliser and water in. Grape vines should get the same treatment as roses. Fertilise all bulbs to ensure you have flowers next year. Keep on top of weeds especially in the garlic and onion beds where the weeds can inhibit growth of these plants quite severely.

Mother Nature in a bit of a mood!

A story which came to mind when I watched the first clip of the mini-tornado, or willy-willy as we call them in WA. Many years ago the Melville/Palmyra Tennis Club had a reciprocal arrangement with a small country club in farming country south of Quairading way out in the wheatbelt. They would come and play us at home on the grass one year, and the next we would go up and play them on their hard courts in the bush. There was a trophy of some sort, donated by Chris Wilson, one-time Club President, whose daughter was married to a local farmer out there, which of course, explained the whole arrangement. I played a couple of times for Melville on the home courts, and then the year after I retired, I volunteered to join the team to travel up-country for the away match.

It was one of those little country tennis clubs that used to dot the wheatbelt in former times. Miles from anywhere, reached by a gravel road, bounded by paddocks stretching to the horizon, four hard courts, a club house, a BBQ area and a parking lot .... all meticulously maintained by the local farmers and their families. You could not fault the state of preparedness of the whole facility when we arrived, or of the table in the clubhouse groaning under the weight of home-cooked lamingtons, cakes and scones, and plates of home-grown steaks awaiting the BBQ scheduled for the end of play.

I remember it was a hot day, maybe in the mid-to-high 30s, full sun ....and it must have been autumn, because on all sides the paddocks were ploughed and harrowed, bare red soil, ready for seeding as soon as the rain arrived.

I was conscious of skin cancer in those days and had slapped on a goodly layer of thick gunky sunscreen.

Play was soon underway.

Then, about half-way through the opening set, a willy-willy developed in the adjoining paddock and it ran straight straight at us and onto the tennis courts. Swirling red dust enveloped and blinded us ... in our neat tennis togs and heavy sunscreen, we were sitting dogs. The thing swirled around us for about a half minute, crossing and recrossing the net and lifting off our hats, and then it spun out into the car park ,and curvetted off in a southwesterly direction, kicking up its heels.

My first overpowering memory of all this was being thickly coated in dust; I didn’t quite know what I looked like until I examined my partner – only his eyes were visible through a mask of red gunk. My second memory was that our opponents did not flicker a moment of interest .... this was clearly a feature of the local tennis environment to which they were adapted. A local weapon, as it were. They wiped off with towels and got stuck into us while we were distracted.

My tennis subsequently was more sub-standard than usual, but my team-mates from Melville were in good form, and rose above our undermining by the local environment. We won the day on a count-back.

To this day I remember little of the beer and BBQ afterwards, other than that it was a lovely and traditional bush occasion. The beer was rendered less tasty however, as I recollect, by its intermixture with the topsoil of good salmon gum country.

Uniting Church Coraling Street Our readings after Jesus going back to His Father in heaven concentrated on the coming of the Holy Spirit. This was when Jesus promised a Comforter, a helper and a power to be with them. We know this to be the birthday of the Church. As the Holy Spirit came on the disciples and gave them power to do things that they have not done before resulting in thousands of people believing. Most people believe that when they believe in Jesus then the Holy Spirit falls on them others have suggested that it is a later experience. However we need to consider do we who believe that we have that Power in today’s world and what are the signs.

The next readings follow on with the action needed if we are following Jesus. That means complete loyalty and putting Him first at all times. That will not always be easy, in fact in some parts of the world Christians have been put to death because of their faith. Jesus calls us to follow Him whatever the cost but at the same time He promises to be with us in His Spirit.

What is a Mental Health Care Plan?

The term mental health encompasses all aspects of our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing, it affects how we feel, think and interact with the world around us. It’s important to acknowledge that “dealing with life’s challenges and changes” can be difficult at times and place our mental health and wellbeing under pressure. The effects of this will be different for all of us, as we all have an innate but varying capacity to cope and deal with these pressures.

Some things to remember in context to a Mental Health Care Plan:  When booking an appointment with your GP ask for a longer consult or mention the reason for the booking (struggling with mental health / discuss care plan etc.)  Sometimes there can be waiting periods to see psychs / counsellors. Discuss alternate support options until you can get an appointment. This may include family, friends, support lines or other services.
