Melrose from Regional Men’s Health Initiative coming to deliver a couple of workshops, on Friday 12th July. Thanks to generous local support from Quairading CWA and Rotary Club of Quairading we’re able to offer this at the very affordable price of $10 each—young timers from surrounding towns (and beyond) are all more than welcome to register and come along. The sessions will finish with lunch, making it an excellent catch up opportunity for anyone home for the holidays!

PUBLIC TRANSPORT AUTHORITY SITE – (Ex Valley Ford) Council is exploring potential future uses of the vacant PTA land which was until recently, occupied by Valley Ford. Soil testing has now been completed and confirmed that the site is not contaminated and therefore is suitable for community redevelopment. COMMUNITIES RALLY TO EMBRACE YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH AFL player Nic Naitanui and Parenting author Maggie Dent will lead a public awareness and fundraising campaign to Support Embrace.

The campaign asks people to post a photograph or video of their younger self using the hashtag #supportembrace and to share a story of healing and hope to show support for our young people who may be going through tough times. Embrace @ Telethon Kids brings together researchers, clinicians, service providers and the community in a collaborative effort to find new strategies and tools to address alarming rates of mental health issues in children and young people.

Telethon Kids Institute Director, Professor Jonathan Carapetis said it was clear that despite the best efforts of many there had been little progress in improving the mental health of young people in Western Australia.

“Suicide is the leading cause of death of young people in WA and we are seeing alarming levels of anxiety and self-harm in our kids,” Professor Carapetis said.

Media Release If there’s one team in the Avon Football Association that’s well renowned for enjoying a few red cans in a responsible social setting after a hard fought game of footy, it’s the mighty Quairading Bulls. Red cans and the red bulls go hand in hand, but we’re not exclusively talking about the now out-of-state-produced chook variety. We’re talking about the beer made by WA, from glorious Wheatbelt barley, but also conveniently packaged in a red can; Alby Draught.

The Quairading Football Club have welcomed a number of new partnerships this season, the latest and tastiest being with Alby Draught, as a major sponsor of the infamous Mutton Cup. Now in its fourth happening, the “bloody ripper” Mutton Cup is the biggest date on the QFC social calendar and this year will be held on Saturday 20th July.

The Cup itself is as real as the Bulls’ chance of a premiership. It’s crafted locally and a highly sought after trophy, awarded to the winning team of local sheep breeder and trainer should they win all four rounds of the one-vs-one sheep races. Yep, there’s sheep racing in Quairading.

Onlookers will cheer, hoot and holler as the trainer herds his or her prized sheep from the shed to the end of the race track all expertly commentated by a suitably jolly local voice.

Attendees will have the chance to make a buck too, as the Livestock Calcutta auctions off each breeder/trainer/sheep combo – yours for the night if you’re the highest bidder - and could set you for a pretty good return if they take out the Cup. The 2018 event saw the record price tag set, selling for over one thousand big ones.

If racing lambs ain’t your jam, perhaps served pulled with gravy will whet your clam.

The Quairading Belles Netballers will have you covered, selling dinner for much needed fundraising dollars. And the fun won’t stop there, rock band Rogue will be playing from dusk ‘til stumps so be sure to wear your best dancing blundies.

If by chance you don’t know a local old timer upon whose floor you can roll out your swag, great accommodation options include the Quairading Caravan Park, Quairading Hotel and Quairading Motel.

The 2019 ALBY Mutton Cup will follow the home ground clash between the Quairading Bulls and the Keller/Tammin KATS on Saturday 20th July from 5pm (ish).

No BYO, drink responsibly. No harm towards animals will be tolerated.

Thank you to everyone who supported our event held at the Quairading Lesser Hall on 30th May 2019.

Our theme this year was breast cancer making the colour theme pink. Our guest speaker was Debra Stacey, who gave an amazing talk! Thank you Debra.

Our raffle winners were Dallas Brown, Sue Anderson, Fay Martin, Klaaske, Kaye Andrews, Sri, Elaine Atkinson, Gwen Powell, Geoff Pearse, Paula Hicks and Bec Wilson.

Lucky cup numbers who won $10 were Pam Caporn and Hayley (donated back).

Thank you to everyone that helped in any way and contributed to the commendable amount raised of $2523. This money supports research to find cures and treatments for all cancers. Thanks to the Shire of Quairading and the Quairading Co-op for your support, and to you all in this Quairading community, you are amazing!

QDHS SCHOOL COUNCIL School Council contributes to good school governance so that school resources are used efficiently, and community expectations and the school’s priorities reflect the needs of students.

One of the rolls the School Council can do is nominate a staff member for the WA Education Awards. This year QDHS School Council has nominated Mrs Penny Johnston for the WA Education Assistant of the year.

Penelope Johnston otherwise known as ‘Penny’ has been a proactive member of staff at Quairading District High School since she commenced in 2000.

She completed her certificate III at South East Metropolitan College of TAFE in 1997 and her Certificate IV in Education – Speciality Special Needs Couse – at South East Metropolitan College of TAFE in 1999. Prior to this Penny was an Enrolled Nurse.

Penny has been involved in many areas over her years at QDHS. We have outlined only a few.

Service to the school community These are just a few things Penny has been involved in over her 19 years as a Special Needs Assistant at QDHS. 



  

Coordinated the “Shop Front Window” now known as the garden shop. Penny collected work from the staff and displayed this in our local main street.

Started the Breakfast Club at QDHS. She cooked toast and supplied fruit for breakfast whist always ensuring the students were the ones to wash and dry their own dishes.

Set up the reading room. Keeps the reading room well-resourced and organised.

Volunteers for various committees within the school.

First Aid Officer of QDHS – as well as keeps all asthma resources updated and all classes fully stocked of sunscreen.

  





Participated in First Aid Courses run over weekends.

Coordinates students displays at our local Agricultural show.

Attends and helps at our local sports carnivals.

Last year, she even came down and assisted the P&C with running the morning tea on her day off.

Active member of the school’s social committee. Coordinates dress up events, cooking classes and lawn bowls competition amongst the staff.

For all the reasons above, the School Council have nominated Penny for Educational Assistant of the Year. Penny completes all of this with a happy smile. She constantly keeps QDHS a positive and happy place to work and learn.

We would like to thank Simone McGuiness for her letter of support in our application. “I am extremely blessed and so very lucky to have Penny as my child’s Special Needs Assistant and her schooling just wouldn’t be the same without her. We don’t know where we would be without our ‘Mrs J’”.

RED CARD SUCCESS $20,000 for Regional Men’s Health

The partnership between the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (WA) and the Red Card for Rabbits and Foxes program has again provided benefits to the Regional Men’s Health Initiative (RMHI).

Based on a $5 donation per pest culled in community events across the south west the Sporting Shooters Association has today presented a cheque for $20,000 to the Men’s Health Initiative to support their work in raising awareness of men’s health and wellbeing in regional WA. Red Card for Rabbits and Foxes is a community based feral animal control program with over 1000 people across south west WA participating in autumn 2019 culling over 7000 pest animals.

Red Card is a program run by Wheatbelt NRM and Chair, Debra Rule said, “This is the third year the Sporting Shooters Association has supported Red Card and Regional Men’s Health. Our community really appreciate that by being part of this they not only are tackling pests but they are also contributing to an important regional health program. Living in the regions we know full well the devastating impact feral animals and mental health challenges can have on our community.”

The RMHI is passionate about raising awareness of issues facing men in regional, rural and remote communities and this donation has supported special projects such as “Talk to a Mate” footy round and “Warrior Ambassador Award Program”. Last year they also published a book – “Working with Warriors”.

The Sporting Shooters Association President Ron Bryant said, “Our Association identifies the importance of men’s health and across Australia we are strong supporters of tackling the issue of feral animals. To us it is just a great fit and we are really pleased to have donated more than $50,000 over the last three years.

Ron confirmed that the Sporting Shooters Association had committed to this partnership for another four years. “We are looking forward to maximising our impact, not just on pests but for our regional “Warriors”.

All of us at The Little Rainmakers Child Care Centre would like to thank the Quairading St John Ambulance volunteers for coming in to visit us.

The children had an amazing time learning about the role of a paramedic and seeing inside the Ambulance.

The children all had a turn laying on the stretcher and being carried away to safety!

John also wheeled the children around our bike path in a wheelchair...I think they would have been happy if he stayed for the day!

We were also lucky enough to sit in the front and turn the lights and sirens on.

Drew checked Kailey’s doll to make sure she was well and the children were great little helpers, who knows they may be the next generation of volunteers!

GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk June is over and the shortest day has been and gone and really it has been quite a pleasant start to winter. The wood fire didn’t get its first outing till after the first week in June and although our city friends are already sick of winter we are enjoying the cool and the small amount of rain we’ve had so far. Of course we would love more or at least our tanks and dams would love more. With the warm days it has been a joy to be in the garden planting and weeding. I don’t know about you but I find pushing and pulling a Dutch hoe around the garden very therapeutic, almost meditative. The Jonquils and Daffodils are up so the promise of a bright spring is inspiring me to think about other spring flowering plants.

I would love to hear about your successes, write me at ckriszyk@hotmail.com Plant of the Month – This month I have chosen a low grow garden plant called Ballota pseudoddictamnus. The one I have is a dwarf variety which only grows to about 45cms tall and spreads to about 30cms. It has silver-grey foliage and very pale pink flowers which form in late spring and stay on the plant throughout the summer.

Ballota grows in full sun and really isn’t fussy about the soil it is in, as long as it is watered weekly in summer.

The first year I had it in the garden I was ready to take it out because it was not looking attractive in summer. But I persevered and then last November when I was readying my garden for Christmas I gave it a good prune, fertilized it along with everything else and it rewarded me by putting on new leaves looking great among the other plants. After the recent rains it has generously provided three small seedlings for which I’m most grateful because I had failed to reproduce it from cuttings.

but this year must be their resting year because there are very few on the trees and those are nowhere near ripe. From the veggie patch we have been harvesting bok choi, tomatoes, lettuce (three varieties), bitter greens which are a type of rocket, radishes, carrots, kale, capsicum and herbs such as parsley, coriander, marjoram, chillies and thyme.

Sow – all potted colour for spring, it is such good value to sow seeds of your favourite spring flowers, if you can’t use them all you can always be generous with the seedlings. Broad beans if they are not in already, it’s not too late; more carrots, more radish and more of any of your favourite winter veggies. It’s also not too late to sow peas.

Things to do – winter is pruning time for many of the deciduous plants and trees in our gardens. Whilst stone fruits, apples, and quinces whether fruiting or ornamental only get a light prune in winter and should be pruned rather more hard in summer, vines and roses should be pruned quite hard at this time of the year, as should Abelia and Smoke Bush. Crepe Myrtle, Hydrangea and Wisteria get light to medium prune depending on their age the desired shape. End of July is a good time to prune as these plants are dormant and won’t lose sap after pruning. After pruning roses and stone fruit applying a lime sulphur spray will help keep fungal problems at bay and apply a manure mulch which will slowly feed the soil until they are fertilized at the end of July. Another job is to keep on top of weeds, remember this year’s seeds are next seven year’s weeds. Also remember to water any plants that are under the eaves or on the leeward side of your house and miss out on any dew or rain. If you have sticky clay soil now is the time to add gypsum. Gypsum helps to breakup clay soils to make nutrients available to plants as well as allow water to move freely so as not to drown plant roots.

Plant – all native plants enjoy being in the ground over winter when they can establish their root systems before summer. Check that the plants you are putting in are frost tolerant; they may need protection during our frosty period around late August and September and by all accounts this coming spring is going to be dry and cold, which is not good news. Anyway back to planting: Asparagus crowns and Rhubarb crowns can be planted all through winter and late keeping brown onions should be planted early in July.

NEWS FROM QDHS Mathematics At Quairading DHS we have a whole school focus on mental maths strategies.

We use a program called ‘Think Mentals’. Each Wednesday morning the students from Year 1 to Year 6 are split into five different groups ranging in levels of challenge. The whole school focuses on a particular mental maths skill for the week in that hour. At the start of every other maths lesson for the first 10 minutes the students complete 10-20 mental maths questions on that skill to help reinforce it.

This year we have made power points to demonstrate to the students how to use each strategy. Rubik’s Cube and Rubik’s Race In High School Maths, the students have been introduce to the Rubik’s Cube (the iPod of the 1980s).

Currently the students are improving and becoming very quick at making one colour.

The goal by the end of the year is to solve the entire cube.

If you have any old Rubik’s Cubes lying around at home and no longer need them, we would love to give them a new home.

Maths Wizard Competition Term 3 Next term we start our Maths Wizard Competition. High School students will be in the Maths Terminator Competition which focuses on adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers and well as multiplying decimals. Students from year 4-6 will be in the Maths Professor Competition which focuses on multiplication and division. Year 1-3 students will be involved in the Maths Wizard Competition which focuses on addition and subtraction.

This competition will run from Week 1 – Week 8 and each week students are given five minutes to complete as many questions as they can. Students record their score each week and at the end of term certificates are handed out to the highest score and most improved for each week. Trophies are awarded to the overall highest score and most improved for each category.

News from Mr Kujawski and Miss White As with many District High schools, we enjoy taking on graduate teachers. There are many benefits to this – for them and for us. There are also responsibilities and one is to support and assist in their development as a teacher.

In 2019 Miss White (2017-18) is using the QDHS method of evaluation in numeracy and the ‘triangle’ system of recording student progress. She and our school have been complimented on this system. Great news and thanks Miss White for sharing our expertise!

Mr Kujawski (2017-18) recently requested to be able to use the Maths Professor program in his class to provide extra focus on multiplication. He presented the concept to the numeracy team at his new school, the idea was accepted, and Mr Kujawski is now coordinating the Maths Professor Program through upper primary across his school. We look forward to hearing of their progress!

SHIRE OF QUAIRADING ADOPTION OF LOCAL LAW ANIMALS, ENVIRONMENT AND NUISANCE AMENDMENT LOCAL LAW 2019 The Shire of Quairading has made a local law relating to Animals, Environment and Nuisance.

The purpose of the local law is to provide for the regulation, control and management of animals, and the prevention of environmental damage and nuisances within the district.

The effect of the local law is to establish the requirements with which any person keeping animals, or undertaking activities that have the potential to impact the environment or create nuisance must comply with.

A copy of the local law may be inspected at or obtained from Shire of Quairading Administration Office, 10 Jennaberring Road, Quairading between the hours of 9:00am and 4:30pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.

The Local Law will come into operation and effect immediately upon its gazettal.

Noongar Cultural Corner A monthly article produced in collaboration with local Noongar representatives and Noongar cultural organisations.

Recently we had the team from Noongar Boodjar Language Centre in Quairading.

They ran a six week language class. The Noongar language has been in a state of degradation over the years. The team at the centre encourages all people to speak and teach the local language.

If you are interested in perhaps improving your Noongar or want to learn for the first time, I would encourage you to make contact. Let’s keep the language alive for all to enjoy.

CORIANDER LIME CHICKEN Recipes courtesy of themediterraneandish.com This one is for all the coriander lovers! (Sorry not sorry Rob Crombie!)

INGREDIENTS  8 chicken thighs (bone-in skin-on is best for max succulence and flavour)  EVOO  6 garlic cloves roughly chopped  1 cup of dry white wine  2 limes (juice of and some zest for more kick)  2 cups of chicken stock/broth (see bone broth recipe)  3 large bunch of coriander Spice Mix  1 tbsp seasoned salt  1 tbsp paprika  1 tbsp black pepper  1 tbsp garlic powder  1/2 tbsp ground nutmeg METHOD Step 1: Preheat moderate oven (180o) Step 2: In a small bowl, mix the spices. Pat the chicken thighs dry, and season each thigh on both sides with the spice mix. Be sure to season underneath the skin as well. Let the chicken thighs sit in room temperature for about 15 minutes.

Step 3: When ready, heat 1-2 tsp of olive oil in a cast iron skillet with a lid. Brown the chicken thighs deeply on both sides in the heated oil. Remove from skillet and set aside briefly.

Step 4: Lower the heat and deglaze the skillet with the white wine. Let cook to reduce and then add the broth.

Step 5: Bring the liquid to a simmer then add lime juice and garlic.

Step 6: Now return the chicken to the skillet; and toss in the coriander. Bring to a high -simmer for about 5 minutes or so.

Step 7: Cover and transfer to the 375 degree F-heated oven for 45 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.

Step 8: Remove from the oven and let sit for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with more coriander, if you like. *A simple fattoush salad and a side of rice, couscous or Greek potatoes complete this chicken dinner.

BONE BROTH

Step 1: Roast bones for 30 minutes at 180o Step 2: Remove form oven and place in a large stock or crock pot and cover with water.

Step 3: Add approx 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar an onion or leek, carrot and a couple of celery stalks roughly chopped. Also add bay leaves, tablespoon of salt, teaspoon of peppercorns and any other particular spices you like. Keep it simple though.

Step 4: For beef stock simmer for approx 48 hours, poultry 24hours, fish 8 hours. You can add garlic, bunch of parsley or thyme etc for the last 30-60 mins.

Step 5: Let cool, fat will set on top, you can scoop this off an use for cooking later or leave in an when you reheat the stock it will dissipate - or you can throw away but that is counterintuitive if you’ve gone to the trouble to make the broth for the health benefits as the fat contains a lot of nutrients.

*The best beef bones to use are: knuckles, joints, feet, and marrow bones. A calf’s or beef’s foot is rich in cartilage.

Neck bones are good. A cartilage rich pig’sfoot can be added to any broth recipe without affecting the flavour. Meaty bones like oxtail, shank, and short ribs add a lot of flavour to bone broth. Use the full chicken or turkey carcass, necks, backs, and feet, chicken feet are the best source of gelatine, add extra wings and thighs to chicken or turkey bone broth.

WARRIOR WELLBEING To Snip or Not to Snip?

When we as blokes, arrive at the decision with our partners that the pitter-patter of tiny feet, 2am feeds and toxic nappies are not on the agenda anymore, then some form of permanent contraception is one possible pathway. There are options for the ladies in our lives, but those options can involve major surgery and unwanted side effects. The male version in terms of permanent surgical sterilization is the vasectomy and by comparison it’s minor surgery with little to no side effects.

The first question is, what exactly is a vasectomy? Quite simply it is the cutting and sealing of the tubes (vas deferens) that carries sperm from the testes to the penis.

It’s usually done under local anaesthetic via a very small incision on each side of the scrotum, and despite “The Snip” being the slang term, it doesn’t usually involve scissors.

The most important question in many bloke’s minds is, “does it hurt?” and we’re well within our rights to ask this. We’ve already spent a lifetime keeping our crown jewels out of harm’s way and on the odd occasion that we haven’t, well, it hasn’t ended well. The short answer is no. Some bruising and slight discomfort over the first couple of days is normal but not debilitating. A warning to my three-year-old daughter not to jump off the end of the lounge into my lap four hours after surgery would have been useful in hindsight and I definitely wouldn’t suggest riding your bike home after the op!

An important point to keep in mind, is the fact that the sperm already in your reproductive system will remain viable little swimmers for up to 3 months or until “the

pipes are clear”. It’s not uncommon for couples to fall pregnant in the months immediately following a vasectomy, an irony not immediately all that humorous to those affected.

A lot of guys worry that it will affect their experience of sex however this typically isn’t the case, as outwardly there is no visible difference to ejaculate nor usually any change to sensation. The vasectomy in no way interferes with erectile function nor with orgasm which no doubt is a relief to those considering the procedure.

A vasectomy should be considered permanent even though there is a procedure known as a vasectomy reversal. A successful reversal is by no means guaranteed, with success anywhere between 40-90 % but falling away rapidly with age, time between surgeries and other complications. For this reason, you need to be absolutely certain; besides, repeat operations on our “agates” don’t figure very highly on anyone’s “to do” list.

To decide whether a vasectomy is right for you, “the ball’s in your court” so to speak.

You need to be sure that you and your partner have completed your family and that you want to take responsibility for family planning. On the flip side, a vasectomy is not something to be rushed into if you are relatively young; recently separated, divorced or having relationship problems.

So, all in all it’s a decision you and your partner need to make together.

QUAIRADING JUNIOR NETBALL Anderson Simpson Shield Yr 6/7 & Doncon McNeil Shield Yr 4/5 The annual Netball Carnival was held on Saturday 15th June at Quairading. The carnival started in 2003 and was named after two life members, Christine Anderson and Barbara Simpson. Both of these fabulous ladies were dedicated and contributed enormously to Quairading Junior Netball over many years.

Quairading was able to successfully hold the event with all four courts being utilised so that 8 teams could compete. Our town is really fortunate to have so many great courts.

The winners of the Doncon McNeil Shield – Yr 4/5 age group were Beverley Black.

Kellerberrin were the champions of the Anderson Simpson Shield – Yr 6/7.

Quairading Junior Netball were able to organise three teams from Quairading. Three super Dads coached the three teams. There were so many volunteers in the canteen and on the court. We send out an enormous thanks to all the volunteers. Without volunteers, our children would not be able to participate in events like this.

The carnival runs in conjunction with junior football. Football held their annual Beverley Shield, also at Quairading on the same day. There were so many young netballers, footballers and supporters at our sporting grounds. It was beautiful weather, sportsmanship was super and we thank all of the towns for travelling to make this event possible.

QUAIRADING BADMINTON CLUB 2019 Open Day Our annual Open Day was held on Tuesday 19th June. We had players travel from Beverley, Dowerin and York. In total, we had 25 players across A grade and B grade.

Tanya Adams always manages to ensure the day runs without a hiccup. Every game runs smoothly and all results are recorded with precision.

WELCOME TO THE BULLRING! Last weekend’s games marked just over half way through the 2019 season. This round was the ‘Think Mental Health’ round. Part of this is an initiative by the WA Country Football League and Avon Football Association are the only League in WA to roll it out this season. If it is successful it will be implemented through all teams in the WACFL. The program targets 3 key areas - Drugs; Alcohol, Cannabis and Ice in 18-30 year olds. a) Promote key messages regarding Drugs, Alcohol, Mental Health and Club Leadership; b) Ensure Clubs are able to provide a safe, welcoming and educational environment for members (suitable policy and systems); c) Peer Support Network (Clubs) providing leadership (guidance, support, outreach) to the broader Club Community The Think Mental Health program so far is proving to be very successful.

We also celebrated “Barb’s High Tea” with this year’s charity chosen by the Simpson Family for the donations to go being MND WA. Two pairs of boots kindly donated by Quairading Agri Services and Primaries were auctioned and raised just over $600. Vouchers donated from other business houses in Quairading were Ag Implements, Quairading Garden and Gifts, the Hair Studio, Quairading Club and the Quairading Co-op. A huge thank you to those business for their generous donations and support. The final $$$’s raised will be in next week’s Passion Sheet. Held that evening was also the long-running, annual Patron’s Tea. Thank you to our generous Patron’s for an excellent meal and evening Over the weekend of the 15th and 16th June the Colts Carnival was held in Moora. Two of our young guns, Connor Anderson and Lochie Gelmi played and we are proud to say they have been selected to play in the All Stars team (which is made up of players from Avon Football Association, Central Midlands, Mortlock and North Midlands) The All Stars team will play in the Landmark Country Championships on 12th – 14th July.
