Winter has come and gone once again, there’s more days of sun and less days of rain. It’s the season of finals and windups and AGMs, a great time to leave the house and catch up with good friends. There are so many things to do here this Spring, including seeing locals sing, dance and act in Highland Fling. FROM THE EDITOR I hope my attempt at “poetry” on the cover page made you giggle with joy. And if not giggle, then smile. And it not with joy, then perhaps with pity. Poems written with extensive help from rhymezone.com aside, surely the delightful sunshine and pops of fresh colour from a new season of flora and fauna are putting a smile on your dial. I’m a winter baby (which of course you know thanks to my successful campaign for #birthdaymonth) so I am sad to say goodbye to chilly days and epic winter storms, but with so many commitments I keep committing myself to, the slightly warmer weather is making it slightly easier to get up in the morning and go do all the things. Slightly. Curtain Raisers rehearsals are underway and we’re all very excited to be performing Highland Fling over the last two weekends in October. Tickets will be available from Friday 15th September via the CRC. All the dates and more info can be found on page 44 and flyers around town. Our winter sporting teams have wrapped up their fixtured seasons and are deep into finals. The Bullettes (hockey) are playing in the Grand Final this Saturday (2nd) and the Bulls reserves (football) are playing in the Prelim next Sunday (10th) hoping the score a spot in the Grand Final the following weekend. It’s high time Quairading brings home a premiership, so good luck to all playing! Win, lose or otherwise, the successes of the seasons will be celebrated on Saturday 9th September at the Quairading Winter Sports Ball. Our small party planning committee have been working hard over the past few weeks to put together a very special evening—if you’d like to come along, please RSVP to Robyn Richards ASAP. If sport ain’t your thang and there’s one thang I can encourage you to join in on this month, it’s our Local Bus Tour on Saturday 16th September. From chats around town and facilitated workshop discussion, it turns out there’s many of us who haven’t visited the crow jewels of Quairading (eg, Toapin Weir, Nature Reserve, Pink Lake). All you probably need is a reason to go, so here it is! Book your seat on the bus by giving us a call or flicking us an email, pack an esky of snacks and refreshments and get ready to see our slice of paradise in a whole new light! Now as promised, I’m going to share my soapbox with our newest team member, Tamara Spark… Time has flown and I barely feel like the newbie anymore as I’ve had a chance to say a quick hello to many of you filing through the CRC over the past several weeks, but for the ones that I haven’t met here is a snippet of my nearly 29 years on earth…… Dowerin Farmer’s daughter, one of a trillion children (slight over exaggeration..11) Cundy Ag Schooled it, saved for a year and travelled for the next 10 years, coming back to replenish the finances often. Sister in law to Stephen Hall and girlfriend of Alex Stacey. I look forward to becoming an adopted local although I know this is generally about a 20+ year process. Please come in and say hi! The Quairading Ladies Hockey Club (Bullettes) are in the big dance this Saturday, against Cunderdin at the Tammin Sportsgrounds. Game starts at 2:30pm and the girls would sure love to see heaps of supporters there in their red and white! The Bullettes played in the Grand Final last year and are looking to go one better this year. Good luck girls!

VALUING VISITORS and reaping the rewards! Jurek Leon from Terrific Trading enthused more than fifteen locals with his Valuing Visitors presentation recently. Representatives from:

We were reminded that visitors come in many forms – from truckies passing through, to visiting professionals or even sports teams and of course day trippers and caravan clubs. Ideally it should always be our intention to make all visitors glad they came here or chose to stop here. It can be as small as a smile and a hello or more involved such as providing great service or going one step further and providing useful information or assistance. “Making a connection” is what makes people feel special and acknowledged and likely to share positive comments about their Quairading experience with family and friends. The visitor will remember what their experience felt like, looked like and sounded like. You only need to think about a time when you were a visitor somewhere and what you remember about that experience. Items specific to Quairading that were identified to need some improvement or consideration included – signage, everyone knowing what and where our attractions are and some paint jobs. So, perhaps we can organise an audit of all of our signs in and around town and let’s have a bus trip for locals to check out what visitors might like to check out. Thanks to Q Dee’s Diner for the delicious dinner and to all who attended this workshop for sparing the time and more importantly the many fantastic thoughts and ideas. This workshop was made possible with financial support from FRRR – the Quairading CRC sincerely thanks them for their valuable support of rural Australia. “Visitorism” – it’s really valuable to our local businesses and broader community. PAP SMEARS Our Practice Nurse, Jess Richards RN, is now a registered Pap Smear Provider. If you are due for a standard Pap smear and unable to attend an appointment with Dr Ellie, Jess is now qualified to provide this service. This service will not replace Dr Ellie and we will, as always, work hard at retaining her services. Jess is available as an alternative, for patients who are unable to attend a standard Pap smear consultation with Dr Ellie. If you have any new symptoms (including pain, painful sex or abnormal bleeding or discharge) in the time between your tests, make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible to discuss these changes. MEDICAL STUDENT Our Medical Student, Matt, has joined our Practice and will be with us until the 13 th September. During Matt’s prac, as a 6th year student, he will consult with patients and/or sit in with Doctor and patient. When Matt consults with a patient, the patient will then be seen by Doctor for a normal consult. It is your decision as to whether you are happy to have a consult with Matt and then with Doctor and/or have Matt sit in on your consult with Doctor or, proceed with a normal consult with no student involvement. You will be asked by admin for your preference and consent. If you have any concerns or would like further information, please speak with Debra.
BRAND CHOICE AND PBS MEDICINES Ask your doctor or pharmacist about less expensive brands. The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) provides Australian residents and eligible visitors with affordable, reliable and timely access to approximately 2500 medicines. Under the PBS, the Australian Government subsidises the cost of prescription medicines making them more affordable for all Australians. Many medicines cost the Government much more than the price you pay – some cost hundreds of dollars but a subsidy means that you pay less. There are often different brands of the same prescription medicine and some may be more expensive than others, even though there is no difference in the active ingredient.

Less expensive brands have identical therapeutic qualities – the same amount of active ingredient – but may be different in size, shape, colour and name. Many hospitals use less expensive brands routinely, because they are equivalent to more expensive brands. Prescription medicines available in Australia are subject to high standards of quality, safety, and effectiveness, and are tested by the Australian Government’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). This means less expensive brands of prescription medicine are subject to the same rigorous testing as all other brands. If you choose or are prescribed a more expensive brand, you will need to pay the difference between that brand and the lowest priced one, in addition to your usual PBS patient contribution. The extra cost for a more expensive brand does not count towards your PBS Safety Net total. So by using a less expensive brand, you won’t have to pay extra. It’s your choice. When you present a prescription and your doctor has left the ‘brand substitution’ box blank, this means it’s okay with your doctor for you to use a brand you may prefer. It also means that a pharmacist can offer a different brand if it is available. It’s your choice. If you have any questions about different brands of medicine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. What you can do to save money on prescription medicines. When your doctor prescribes a medicine, ask about using a less expensive brand. When getting a prescription filled, ask your pharmacist whether there are different brands of your medicine available. This may save you money. Provide your Medicare or Repatriation card details every time you have a prescription filled. Centrelink Concession card holders need to show their card for an additional subsidy. Ask your pharmacist about the PBS Safety Net and keep a prescription record form so you will know when you qualify for the PBS Safety Net. Remember, if you choose, or are prescribed a more expensive brand of prescription medicine, you will be paying the difference in price between your brand and the lowest priced one. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about how you can save money on prescription medicines today.
WHY YOU DIAL 000 INSTEAD OF RINGING THE DOCTOR IN A MEDICAL EMERGENCY? In any medical emergency, the quickest way to receive medical attention is to ring 000. Ringing the Doctor’s Surgery or the hospital means we would need to then dial 000! This creates an unnecessary and dangerous time delay while we do this. We cannot stress the importance of you, or someone with you, dialling 000 for any medical emergency. Once you contact 000, they will set the wheels in motion to provide you with medical attention. They will contact the Hospital and the Hospital will contact the Doctor. 000 in any medical emergency is the first number you dial.

Loose Stitches Well it is time for another report. I have nearly finished my LARGE QUILT. Not looking too bad. I am pleased with it. Was not so sure about the colours at first but now that they are all joined they look good. Thank you ladies. You need to come in and visit. The materials are beautiful. I must admit there are some colours I do not like but somebody else might think they are magic. I was there the other day when a lady came in to pick out some black. For the past 5 games Coach Coz has been telling the boys “Finals start now”. Well they have actually started and things panned out pretty nicely. The boys took to the underwhelming Northam field and faced up against a much younger, faster, fitter and uglier Railways unit. It was a warm day on the track and even the Runner had a sub; with Soupsy and Jack sharing the duties. It was a rocky start for the boys with Railways getting the first points, but the Bulls made sure when they got it in their forward 50 they capitalised, and scored the first major. Leading by 2 goals at half time and having a bit of momentum the boys were keen to get out for the third. Unfortunately not keen enough and they lost track of the time and ended up running onto the field as the umpire was getting ready to bounce down. The all-important “premiership quarter” as Cozza calls it ended with them conceding more goals than they earned and they were up by 1 goal at three quarter time. The boys took to the huddle expecting one of Cozza’s vein bursting spiels but it never came. Instead as Rowlie Mellor said “He had the boys captivated, they were hanging off every word, and he only swore twice!”. The Quairading boys love their footy, and want to play more of it, so they took it to Railways in the last quarter and held out for the win. The last quarter saw the race that stops the nation with Liam Want (desperate for his fourth goal) outrun the rotund Railways full back. Considering Liam is about half his size and a decade younger the race should not have been as close as what it was. At the end of the game Cozza was overheard telling some of the boys that the win was the best thing to happen to him all year, and when asked about Matilda Rose he responded with “Who?” 1st Quairading Agri Services: Lochie Gelmi 3rd Quairading Club: Theo Hayden

Lochie Gelmi had yet another superb game and dominated in the midfield. He was presented with a Barb’s hard yards towel by Rod Simpson and the Simpson family for his continuous efforts on the field. Liam kicked 4.5 for the day. Liam recollects that two of his goals were from outside 50, but probably closer to 80m out, one of which he out-marked their ruckman for, another he snapped from the boundary, and his last he had to outrun Usain Bolt and carried it single handedly from the centre square. Others recollected that his five points were all from within 10m of the goal, and three of them were from the goal square. RESERVES LADDER Theo Hayden entertained the crowd with the most spectacular spoil of the year. He got some serious hang-time on his opponent’s shoulders and three seconds into his balancing act he realised he had jumped too early, so instead of taking the mark he fisted the ball 20m out of bounds.

It wasn’t all good news for the boys, as Mitch Davies has injured his elbow, Tom Railways Curtin his Knee, Rohan Hadlow with a head injury (he went to ground holding his Quairading head but he wasn’t near anyone at the time. It’s suspected he wanted to feel included in the game) and Alex Stacey has a grass burn the size of an open hand on Beverley his rump. York Thanks to Brett Caporn who leapt to the rescue at the last minute and drove the bus home, after finding that the boys plan for heading home was “whoever is Cunderdin sober has to drive” and finding them all sitting in the back of the bus with no one LEAGUE in the driver’s seat, all refusing to move.

QUAIRADING JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB With the footy season coming to an end, we can reflect on what has been another successful season for the club and thank the players and all that have helped out throughout the year. On Sunday 13th August, our players were undefeated in the Merredin Winter Carnival. This was a year 7 and under competition between teams from throughout the Wheatbelt. Our team did us proud winning all the games and then winning the final by a considerable margin. Thanks to Stuart Saunders and Tony Dall for coaching the boys and all that assisted on the day.
Our season finished on Friday 18th August with our annual family competition and although we don’t know who actually won the game many of the fathers were moving rather slowly the next day.
Congratulations to the players that received awards that night.
