PINK? LAKE?

Pink or not, it sure is striking! A road going straight through a lake, with water of different colours on each side is a unique sight for sure but perhaps it’s due for a new name? What would you suggest? If you haven't gathered, this is an aerial photo of our Pink Lake, 10km east of Quairading by Michael Macaulay (@mikey_perth on Instagram).

From the Editor

Golly, I was feeling pretty optimistic about the new year until this week’s heat wave sucked the life right outta me! May it pass quickly, and without power outage knock on wood.

We’re into our third week back at work here at the Quairading CRC and we’ve been nicely busy, which is great! If you’ve got some pesky admin jobs you need a hand to tick off your new year to–do list, come on in we’re getting particularly good at helping sort out myGov issues, complete Western Power claims, printing photos and many things in between.

There’s the announcement of a few shiny new things coming to town in this edition of the Banksia Bulletin. My strong bias will tell you the most exciting of which is some more info from The Clinic Quairading check out page 25 for an introduction to the owners (can’t wait to get to know them). Equally as exciting (done playing favourites!) is the news of Heartlands Vet coming to town, Pristine Hearing now visiting the CRC once per month (plus some other services which will hopefully advertise next month), a lampshade workshop, a musical performance, new footy coaches AND a mock wedding. Where else in the world would you find that motley mix of goings on?! How lucky we are.

Starting in February, Share & Care (based in Northam) will be visiting our CRC once a month to provide free and confidential financial counselling. Check out all the details on page 17 and call or email them to book your appointment (please note they will only visit if they have people actually booked in).

We’ve also been working with Palliative Care WA and have weaseled our way into their upcoming regional roadshow. Final dates and times are yet to be confirmed, but working on early May for a two hour Advance Care Planning Workshop more info next month.

Heat wave be gone.

Happy reading!

REGIONAL COLUMN

Sounding the alarm on the dangers of lithium-ion batteries

Senior Regional Officer for Goldfields Esperance, Kelly O’Donnell

Lithium-ion batteries have become the fastest growing home fire risk in Western Australia according to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

In 2024, there was a fire caused by one of these batteries almost every second day, making it the worst year on record. These 166 fires caused injuries, destroyed homes and possessions, damaged rubbish trucks and ignited large bushfires.

This figure is extremely concerning to Consumer Protection’s Product Safety team, who are urging people to only buy products containing lithium-ion batteries from reputable suppliers and to be cautious when purchasing these items from overseas or on second-hand marketplaces.

Consumers should look for a regulatory compliance mark, such as a tick inside a triangle, or go to eess.gov.au to check whether the charger is approved for use in Australia.

Reputable manufacturers have matched battery/charger combinations which includes a system to detect the state of charge and switch off when nearing full. Overcharged lithium-ion batteries have the potential to heat up and ignite so it’s important to remove your device from the charger once fully charged.

Consumers should also avoid mixing and matching chargers, and only charge batteries on a hard surface in a cool, dry place and away from flammable materials like beds, lounges or carpet.

Worryingly, these batteries don’t even need to be charging to catch fire if they are badly damaged, poorly manufactured or exposed to direct sunlight or excessive heat for long periods of time. A recent housefire in Perth’s east was started by a remote-control toy car that wasn’t on charge.

To check if an item in your house contains a lithium-ion battery, look for labels such as lithium ion, liion, li-po and lithium-polymer. E-rideables, power tools, laptops, toys, smartphones, electric vehicles and even electric toothbrushes and vapes are powered by these batteries. They are everywhere in your lives.

When it comes to e-rideables, charge them outside of the home and never leave them to charge overnight. Installing a smoke or heat alarm where these devices are charged could save your life.

Never put lithium-ion batteries in your household waste or recycling bin. Throwing batteries in the bin can cause rubbish and recycling trucks to catch fire and waste facilities to burn. This endangers the lives of workers and costs the ratepayers.

Instead take the batteries to the nearest battery drop-off point, which can be found at Recycle Rightrecycleright.wa.gov.au.

If you see a battery ignite, call 000 immediately as these fires are extremely difficult to extinguish with water and battery contents may reignite or explode several days later. The toxic gases that are released from these batteries are also incredibly dangerous, so stay well away.

For more information on lithium-ion battery safety around the home visit productsafety.gov.au.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt

Can we survive these brutal conditions? Well, we are adapting and as gardeners we are survivors because we live in the knowledge that autumn is coming; just one more month of summer. There is hope that the second last week of January was the last of the severe heat waves and that the odd day of 40 will be all that the gardens will have to cope with. Water, mulch, appropriate plants and shade are the answer and the only way we can continue to garden successfully and enjoyably in our area. The February meeting for the QGLG will be on Friday 28th at the CRC starting at 9:30 am. If you are new to Quairading please come along and meet the most welcoming group of ladies, and sometimes a gentleman or two. We would love to meet you too.

PlantoftheMonth – in my garden groundcovers come in all shapes and sizes and that is because ground- covers don’t have to be flat, they don’t have to be green all year and they don’t even have to be called a groundcover. But when well-chosen and placed in the right setting, they do perform spectacularly. The black and white photo will not even begin to show the magnificence of this one and one only plant of the Grevillea Gin Gin Gem that was planted over 14 years ago and (fingers crossed) will continue growing and spreading for some time still. As can be seen it has been allowed to do its own thing but it can be easily controlled as the second picture shows of another one of these plants growing in the Mediterranean Garden here at Eaglewood Farm where it has been trimmed to keep it a certain size. There are many climbers that will behave like groundcovers a couple of these in my garden are the Trachelospermum Jasminoides, Star Jasmine and Hardenbergia, Happy Wanderer. Many of the drought tolerant herbs make good ground covers too, the creeping varieties of thyme, oregano and the low growing rosemary which mounds and spreads and will even cover banks very successfully. Lippia also grows well here and isn’t very fussy with soil type, it doesn’t like a lot of foot traffic but is a great bee attracting plant especially in summer when it is covered in tiny pink flowers. Perhaps two of the best known, groundcovers are, Juniperus rigida var conferta, Shore Juniper and Myoporum parvifolium, Creeping Boobialla both these grow very well in our conditions and can cover large areas with minimal attention. A few varieties from the Tradescantia family also do well with some shade their common names are Purple Heart, Moses in the Cradle and Wandering Jew which can get way from you without attention. And finally, Pink Kalanchoe, and Aptenia, Baby Sunrose either the green or variegated one are two no fail always green groundcovers that will never fail you. Both are succulents and have pretty pink flowers in spring and into summer. Groundcovers are great in the garden, they help the soil retain moisture and stay cool during our hot summers, in winter their foliage prevents weed seeds from germinating and there by, groundcovers certainly make a big difference in our gardens.

February in the Garden

It’s time to – well truth be told; it’s time to do as little as possible! It’s too hot for anything other than watering. Like us, our plants need water and shade and if we can provide these two things for them, they too will survive until cooler times arrive.

Sow – We don’t sow any seeds during February

Plant – Lettuce seedlings are the only plants that are continually planted because a lot get used.

Harvest – at Eaglewood Farm, summer means lots of harvesting of stone fruits. The apricots have just finished, as have the early peaches, Santa Rosa and A-Okay plums and peacherines. In February Narrabeen Satsuma and Mariposa plums will ripen and then towards the end of the month the late nectarines and late peaches will be ready. In the veggie garden we have beans, cucumbers, spring onions, lettuce, silver beet, tomatoes capsicums and eggplants. Soon the rock melons and water melons will be ready too.

The last word – May the tears we shed in 2024, water the seeds we plant in 2025.

Warrior Wellbeing Article

You Can Teach an Old Dog New Tricks

Celebrate the power of people continuing to learn throughout their lives. Australian and international research supports that when people take an active approach to learning in their adult years, they develop skills, confidence and courage to live independently, find work and shine at new skills. Lifelong Learning encompasses a wide range of learning opportunities from schooling, other formal education institutions, workplaces and through community participation.

Does this mean we all have to enrol in University, TAFE or a certified training course? The short answer is no, as learning is no longer considered an activity confined to education institutions. Rather, it is recognised as happening in the workplace, in the home and during leisure time. This is known as Informal Learning, which does not result in a qualification or certificate, but can be considered to embrace a whole range of activities that enhance life skills such as:

• Reading

• Using the computer or the searching the internet (you must be careful here!)

• Watching TV / listening to the radio

• Visiting libraries or museums

• Playing sport

• Attending community forums or information sessions (guest speakers)

• Joining a Men’s Shed / CWA / or other community groups

• Volunteering

• Mentoring within the workplace

It never ceases to amaze me the stories we hear from blokes involved in WA Men’s Sheds who have either reconnected with or learnt a new skill. This in turn can create a sense of pride, achievement and that all important sense of meaning and purpose that we all, especially blokes, seek in life’s journey.

At Regional Men’s Health we talk about our social / spiritual wellbeing which is one important aspect to our overall health and wellbeing. It is this aspect of our health that is unique to the individual and can be what each of us wants it to be. It is where we get our identity, individuality, sense of self, meaning, purpose, passions and interests. Sometimes though these things do not just simply appear or develop by themselves without effort; some of us will have to spend time to grow and nurture our passions and interests.

Learning experiences may not always come our way. We may need to actively seek them out or expose ourselves to the right environment to provide this opportunity, and this could mean trying more than once. Like the old saying ‘If you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always got’. Getting out of our comfort zone, trying something new, and revisiting the things that used to get us excited can help enhance our sense of fulfillment and happiness.

In mediaeval times during Lent, pretzels made of flour water and salt, and configured as the arms of someone praying, were the favoured food.

Coraling Street

Following on from the Christmas events the readings for January and February continue to tell us about Jesus growing up and starting to share the good news. In January we had Jesus’ baptism (Luke 3) and a wedding where Jesus turned water into wine (John 2). The last Sunday in January is from Luke chapter 4. Jesus comes home and gives the message in his home synagogue. It sounds really nice as far as it goes but the next week we read the rest of the chapter and hear how the people didn’t like what he was saying and tried to throw him out of town.

If the preacher doesn’t want to talk about Jesus being thrown out of town they can use Luke chapter 2 about Jesus being presented in the temple. The second week in February we read Luke 5, about Jesus calling some disciples.

Then we start hearing what Jesus taught. You may have heard of the sermon on the mount (Matthew chapter 5) but Luke chapter 6 is the sermon on the plain. This is a different crowd so Jesus repeats many of the things he said in the sermon on the mount. On the last Sunday in February we hear some more of this sermon on the plain where Jesus tells us to love our enemies.
