A new year can bring new beginnings, some endings, renewed hope, a smidge of uncertainty, hotter weather, resolutions with varying levels of commitment - or none of the above and a good old carrying on of the status quo, for better or worse. I’m feeling like our community has a heap to be hopeful for (to be fair, it always does!) as we have a handful of exciting new things going on, and a nice amount of status quo for good measure.

Right before the Christmas holidays, the Quairading CRC received very welcome news of a five year contract extension offer from the State Government. This provides us some very comforting stability, continued assurance that the current state government appreciates the vital service we provide our community—and the opportunity to shake things up a little bit, should we choose to.

We also heard that the Shire of Quairading received excellent news from Lotterywest (we literally heard Sarah Caporn’s shrieks of excitement echo down the hallway!) with their grant application for funding to get the community park “Kwirrading Koort” happening—approved! Huge congratulations to Sarah and her team for getting to this point, we can’t wait to see action on the Old Ford Yard site in the coming months.

While on Shire topics, welcome to the many new employees we’ve spotted around town! We’ll give them all another month to get settled in and hope to publish a few introductions and updates on projects in next month’s Banksia Bulletin.

We’ve also spotted change occurring at our nearest watering hole, over the street at the Quairading Hotel! We wish Justin and Noelene well in their future endeavours, and welcome Jo & Jade to our community as the “new Publicans”. Let’s also afford these newbies another month or so to get settled and sorted—we hear the bottle shop and bar are open most afternoons, and accommodation and meals will come in due course. As will updates in the Banksia Bulletin, from other new businesses we’ve spotted on social media too hopefully, such as LT Restaurant and The Maker’s Keep (honestly, it’s all so exciting!).

Our very short, cruisey January work weeks have come to end and we’ll be resuming normal hours of 9am—4:30pm, Monday to Friday as of Monday 31st January. I take back “cruisey” though, we’ve been absolutely flat stick with requests for help with digital proof of vaccination and ServiceWA app set up. Luckily we love the work and being able to alleviate the stress that tasks like this can cause many members of our community, of all ages and abilities! If you need a hand, please reach out and book an appointment with Tamara or myself. We can sometimes also offer walk-in assistance if you jag us at the right time so feel free to give that a crack too. We’re accepting monetary donations to the CRC in exchange for this assistance as sadly it’s not something the State or Federal government are willing to fund at this point.

Lastly, congratulations to local award winners recognised at the Shire’s recent Australia Day event, we hope to also publish their achievements in next month’s edition. I simultaneously send my thoughts to anyone feeling the pain and sorrow of these celebrations being held on January 26.

COMMUNITY QUAIRADING BOWLING CLUB We have been advised that as of Monday 31 January 2022 all patrons to bowling clubs including members, spectators and the wider general public are required to be fully vaccinated with at least two doses. This includes the clubhouse, playing surface and surrounds.

Proof of vaccination is to be provided by presentation of a COVID-19 vaccination certificate (digital or hard copy) plus personal identification or the ServiceWA app before entering the Clubhouse.

CREATIVE ARTS SOCIETY Have you ever used your hands and mind to create? Well now is your chance! Make something with your creative juices. We work with clay for pottery and have glazes and a kiln for firing your creations.

We have canvas and easels for painting, cartridge paper for charcoal/pencil sketching's.

Quairading Library News Busy times at the library. I am in the middle of a huge book exchange, which includes hundreds of new books, DVDS, and audio books.

The library is a free community service located in the Quairading Post Office. It is free to join, just bring ID with you and we can set up your membership, kids are welcome to join as well. Being a member of the library entitles you to be able to borrow books and DVDs for free for a period of three weeks at a time, and if that is not long enough you can also renew.

We have a huge selection of DVDs which include movies of all genres including new releases, documentaries and television series.  Like to listen to your book instead? Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm My! What a difference a few weeks can make! In the last bulletin the reader would have read a bit of blaze’ chat on my part because the long cool spring had led me to believe that our normal summer was not going to happen. Boy I could not have been more wrong! Fortunately winter had set us up to be able to cope and with good preparations such as shading and mulching have meant to most plants will survive the brutal long hot spells we have had. Hopefully everyone reading this has had a similar experience and isn’t ready to throw down the trowel and give up gardening as just too hard. If you are feeling despondent join the Quairading Garden Lovers Group and become re-enthused. We meet at the Quairading Garden Nursery at 10am on the last Friday of the month. Our first meeting for 2022 is on February 25th, hope to see new members join us this year.

Plant of the Month – Corymbia ficifolia the common name is Red Flowering Gum, it is one of the most outstanding flowering trees in Australia with its masses of conspicuous flowers of red or vermillion-orange that cover the canopy in summer and are followed by large woody eggshaped fruits known as honkey nuts. This flowering gum grows moderately fast with some summer watering in our climate and can reach up to 12 metres. It has a rounded and dense crown, making it an excellent shade tree. Its oval leaves are distinctive as they are dark green on top and paler green on their undersides. The bark is persistent in that it does not shed annually. It is a Western Australian native tree naturally restricted to the far south-west of WA. It grows on sandy soils in low-lying areas of heath or woodland.

Corymbia ficifolia is widely grown as an ornamental tree throughout southern Australia, with many grafted cultivars and hybrids also commercially available making it suitable for a range of environments. If a particular colour is wanted it is best to purchase a grafted specimen.

It’s time…

Plant – keep planting lettuce. But until the weather cools down the is not a lot that can be safely planted without risking that planting shock will set the plant back and not allow it to thrive.

Harvest – It has been a bumper crop for all the stone fruit and although the cherries and apricots have finished there are peaches and plums still to come. These will be followed by pears and apples. In the veggie garden, lettuces have been well shaded and so have continued to be sweet and growing well. Tomatoes have been producing well in the glass house and now the plants in the open beds have started. Zucchinis and cucumbers have also been plentiful. Our rock melons and water melons are not ripe yet but will be in two to three weeks.

Things to do – this being the hottest month of the summer keep the water up to all plants especially the softer ones and those with fruit that is developing. If there are burnt leaves on any plants leave them on until the heat is over because while they may look unsightly they are protecting the younger leaves from the sun. Wait until the end February to summer prune roses, apply organic fertilizer and then water deeply.

(2) To promote and assist the general good of all elderly people in the district by assisting the work of statutory authorities and voluntary organisations engaged in respect of elderly people in providing facilities for physical and mental recreation, developing physical improvement, furthering health, relieving poverty, distress or sickness, or in pursuing any objects which are benevolent.

(3) To promote and organise co-operation in the achievement of the above purposes and to that end bring together in Committee representatives of the authorities and organisations engaged in the furtherance of the above purposes.

The next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Monday 14th February 2022 at 10am in the Council Chambers and members of the public are very welcome to attend.

How Breathing Calms Your Brain, And Other Science-Based Benefits Of Controlled Breathing The science of breathing stands on quite ancient foundations. Centuries of wisdom instructs us to pay closer attention to our breathing, the most basic of things we do each day. And yet, maybe because breathing is so basic, it’s also easy to ignore.

A brief review of the latest science on breathing and the brain, and overall health, serves as a reminder that breathing deserves much closer attention – there’s more going on with each breath than we realize.

Controlling your breathing calms your brain.

While the admonition to control breathing to calm the brain has been around for ages, only recently has science started uncovering how it works. A 2016 study accidentally stumbled upon the neural circuit in the brainstem that seems to play the key role in the breathing-brain control connection. The circuit is part of what's been called the brain’s “breathing pacemaker” because it can be adjusted by altering breathing rhythm (slow, controlled breathing decreases activity in the circuit; fast, erratic breathing increases activity), which in turn influences emotional states. Exactly how this happens is still being researched, but knowing the pathway exists is a big step forward. Simple controlled breathing exercises like the 4-7-8 method may work by regulating the circuit.

Breathing regulates your blood pressure.

“Take a deep breath” is solid advice, particularly when it comes to keeping your blood pressure from spiking.

While it’s unclear whether you can entirely manage blood pressure with controlled breathing, research suggests that slowing your breathing increases “baroreflex sensitivity,” the mechanism that regulates blood pressure via heart rate. Over time, using controlled breathing to lower blood pressure and heart rate may lower risk of stroke and cerebral aneurysm, and generally decreases stress on blood vessels (a big plus for cardiovascular health).

Counting breaths taps into the brain’s emotional control regions.

A recent study showed that controlling breathing by counting breaths influences “neuronal oscillations throughout the brain,” particularly in brain regions related to emotion. Participants were asked to count how many breaths they took over a two-minute period, which caused them to pay especially focused attention to their breathing. When they counted correctly, brain activity (monitored by EEG) in regions related to emotion, memory and awareness showed a more organized pattern versus what’s normally experienced during a resting state. The results are preliminary, but add to the argument that controlling breathing taps into something deeper.

The rhythm of your breathing affects memory.

A 2016 study showed for the first time that the rhythm of our breathing generates electrical activity in the brain that influences how well we remember. The biggest differences were linked to whether the study participants were inhaling or exhaling, and whether they breathed through the nose or mouth. Inhaling was linked to greater recall of fearful faces, but only when breathing through the nose. Participants were also able to remember certain objects better when inhaling. Researchers think that nasal inhalation triggers greater electrical activity in the amygdala, the brain’s emotional epicenter, which enhances recall of fearful stimuli. Inhaling also seems linked to greater activity in the hippocampus, the seat of memory.

Controlled breathing may boost the immune system and improve energy metabolism.

While this is the most speculative of the study findings on this list, it’s also one of the most exciting. The study was evaluating the “Relaxation Response” (a term popularized in the 1970s book of the same name by Dr. Herbert Benson, also a coauthor of this study), which refers to a method of engaging the parasympathetic nervous system to counteract the nervous system's “fight or flight” response to stress. Controlled breathing triggers a parasympathetic response, according to the theory, and may also improve immune system resiliency as a “downstream health benefit.” The study also found improvements in energy metabolism and more efficient insulin secretion, which results in better blood sugar management. If accurate, the results support the conclusion that controlled breathing isn't only a counterbalance to stress, but also valuable for improving overall health.

Lemon Meringue Green Smoothie I (Jill) have been road testing this smoothie recipe for the last couple of weeks (after seeing it on TikTok), and I give it a huge stamp of approval!

The lemon zest and coconut milk make this bad boy deliciously zesty and creamy—just like a lemon meringue pie. Don’t knock the frozen cauliflower til you try it (nor my TikTok watching habits), it brings no flavour but adds thickness and coldness, and an extra dose of veg. You can even buy frozen cauliflower florets from the Co-op for just a few bucks, in fact I’ve been able to find ALL the ingredients listed at the Co-op (stock availability may change). Also, you can peel, chop and freeze your banana ahead of time if you want it extra, extra thick and cold, but it works perfectly fine without freezing too.

2 handfuls baby spinach 1 cup frozen cauliflower 1 banana Zest and juice of 1 lemon 2 serves vanilla protein powder 2 pitted medjool dates Pinch of salt Splash of vanilla extract 3/4 can light coconut milk Bang it all in a blender and whiz the life out of it. I go about 30 seconds on speed 8 in my Thermomix, scrape down the sides, give it a taste (add a splash of maple syrup if it needs sweetening) then blitz for another 30 seconds. This recipe makes a pretty giant smoothie, and thanks to the lemon it lasts pretty well in the fridge—so you can save half for tomorrow!

The 70th Anniversary of the Accession of Queen Elizabeth II

Sunday, 6th February, 2022 will mark the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II. To honour this special occasion and to give thanks for her life and witness as Queen of the United Kingdom and other nations of the Commonwealth, including Australia, a Service of Festal Evensong will take place on that Sunday at 5.30 p.m. in Holy Trinity Church, York.

The occasional address will be delivered by Professor Deborah Gare, the new Head of Social Sciences and Arts, Murdoch University; Professor Gare having been formerly at Notre Dame University. Her research interests include Visual Evidence, the 'making' of History, Australia and Empire, and Australia's social, political and cultural history. She is heard regularly on ABC Nightlife discussing, with Philip Clark, extraordinary people and events in Australian history.

Between 1913 and 1919 Professor Gare was a member of the Board of the Anglican Church’s Wollaston Theological College, Mt Claremont.

Coronation music will be played on the Church’s Pipe Organ during the service by David Gething.

He has toured in America and Europe and taught for three years at The Galway School of Traditional Irish Music. In 2000 he won Ireland’s Michael Coleman Traditional Fiddler of The Year Award.

Robert is writing an original composition “The Torbay Suite” which is a descriptive piece inspired by the Torbay Inlet and its surrounding ocean, wetlands, forests, and sky. Torbay is in Western Australia’s remote Great Southern region where he lives.

Robert is also a violin maker and will be playing his own violin. At the beginning of the concert, he will give a short description of how a violin is made for those interested in learning a bit more about the craft.

On Thursday, 17th and Saturday, 19th February Robert is performing the concert at 6.30 p.m. at St Mary’s Church, Beverley, and Holy Trinity Church, York.
