FROM THE EDITOR Ready or not—we’re back, baby! Sure we’re not quite operating at full capacity yet (more days off than on have been absolutely superb through January!) but as of Monday 1st February, we’ll be back on deck and raring to go from 9am—4:30pm, Monday to Friday.

Some thoughts I’ve had in the lead up to January 26th: I made a very conscious decision this year to not celebrate the 26th January, a date I have ashamedly thoroughly enjoyed celebrating in the past. Last year I, like many, took action to better educate myself on Australian history, racism, privilege and the ongoing negative impacts colonisation has had on our country’s First Nations people. I’ve been lucky to spend many wonderful hours with many wonderful members of our local Noongar community over the years, but particularly this last year, and I just can’t think of anything worse than “celebrating” the anniversary of a week that was the beginning of so much pain and destruction caused to their ancestors and their culture.

I love Australia and am so appreciative of all the privileges and freedoms I enjoy on a daily basis—and I absolutely do regularly celebrate those—but I have to acknowledge that many of my privileges and freedoms have been made possible because I live on unceded land. My personal aim, and an aim which I would like to think I can encourage others (maybe you) to work towards; is to continue to learn more about our history and how it influences our present and our future, to challenge and unlearn the bias I have learnt from our society, to use my position of privilege to give others a hand up and ultimately be a part of a generation that sees an Australia that accepts a more truthful version of its history—a country that takes meaningful steps toward reconciliation (not one that thinks changing one word in an anthem is enough).

I believe I can work toward all of this while still being proud of my own heritage, of my own ancestors who left Ireland and settled in Australia and of the generations of Hayes’ before me who have worked hard in the agricultural industry and who were respected members of their communities. I’m grateful to friends and family who have been willing to have conversations on these topics in recent weeks and to you for reading my thoughts. I hope I’ve struck some chords.

HEAL STREET UPGRADE Please be advised that WCP Civil will be carrying out the Heal Street Carpark Upgrade and the Arthur Kelly Village Road Upgrade works on behalf of the Shire of Quairading during the coming weeks. Quairading Sub Centre News February 2021 With St John WA providing a vital service in our community – a service that we will always provide but hope that your never need – we are often asked questions about what we do.

This month, we are giving the answers to some or the more common queries.

I notice that my Benefit Fund Renewal is now being sent from Perth. Does this mean that my membership fees leave Quairading and go to Perth?

No, not at all. All the Benefit Fund membership fees stay in Quairading and are used by the Quairading Sub Centre for the benefit of the Quairading community.

How may I pay my membership?

You may continue to pay your membership by mail, at the Post Office or by bank transfer. If you would prefer, we are now able to accept credit card payments.

Please ring our office on Wednesdays (9645 0176) or email quairading.subcentre@stjohnwa.com.au if you wish to pay your membership by credit card.

What does my membership cover?

Your annual membership, of $95.00 for a family or $57.00 for a single, covers you (and your family) for all required ambulance costs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 12 months in Western Australia.

However, if your children have turned 18, they will need to take out their own membership.

Recently I needed an ambulance when I was transferred from Quairading Hospital to Northam Hospital. I was surprised that the Ambulance Officers were not from Quairading. Why was this?

Our volunteers work extremely hard at helping our community.

However, the volunteers know that when they need to be out of town or are unable to be on call, surrounding towns can assist. Fortunately, Ambulance Officers from all surrounding towns are trained to the same high standard as our Ambulance Officers.

Likewise, our volunteers have, at times, assisted Cunderdin, Corrigin, Bruce Rock and Beverley over the past 12 months What should I do if I have questions that have not been answered?

Sandgropers Quairading Rally held November 2020 Written by Grahame and Rhonda Wroth The West Australian members met in November for a 4 day rally in Quairading. Forty members attended; there were 18 RV’s and 3 chalets in use. It is a very nice new little park with great amenities and a short walk to town. Behind the back of the park is the town pool and free entry passes were provided to us. Not only did we get 4 nights for the price of 3, we also got a 5 % discount. Being a small park we pretty well had it all to ourselves which was great.

As an added bonus each member received a $10 Visitor Voucher from the Quairading Community Resource Centre to spend at various busiesses in town. This initiative was gratefully received and certainly got us all into town and to the shops.

Ron & Cheryl aptly headed their email flyer as the Quairading Rest and Relaxation Rally, incorporating an Evening with Elvis.

That is exactly what we all got and rallying with our mates with an emphasis on taking it easy seemed to be just the ticket for us all. We had perfect weather and better still there were none of the irritations of being in a large caravan park. A great choice by Ron & Cheryl, I rated it as 10 out of 10. The nearby bowls club was a bonus for us bowlers.

Elvis didn’t make it to our Elvis Night, but a curious snake had a slither through the park before disappearing before the snake catcher arrived. Perhaps he was worried about some of the Elvis tunes to be sung later. There was a full turnout and a fun event enjoyed by all. Leon and Marlene were the most popular Elvis act, to much acclaim.

Friday morning saw most of us wander into town, with the blokes enjoying the local men’s shed which has a large collection of farming equipment, vehicles, and stationary engines. They fund raise with a scaled down grain truck and two trailers. It is worth around $250,00 to replace. It is hired out to shows and events for around $800.

Saturday night we went to the Quairading Club for a nice roast. The drinks were cheap, so most of us walked back to the park.

As we were on the relax mantra, and no need to convoy off somewhere else, everyone seemed to enjoy the free and easy nature of the rally. The disk bowls however saw the competitive nature in us emerge and there was a spirited but fun event with much barracking from the side lines. Maureen and Les became State champs with May and Graham coming second.

The raffle of Australian made goodies was won by Dennis and Pauline, second prize went to Leon.

Sunday morning saw Ric & Fran with Dennis & Pauline cooking yummy pancakes for us all.

All in all this was a very enjoyable and relaxing rally and a great way to finish this unprecedentedly odd year. This was Rhonda and my third rally and we feel fortunate to have had another great time, spent with folk that we feel so comfortable with and eager for the next rally.

Graduation Speech Delivered by Jasmine Yarran at QDHS Awards Day 2020 First of all I would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we meet today, my Ballardong people and I would like to pay my respects to my Elders both, past and present.

I would like to thank Pauline, Magdalen and Quairading District High School for the invitation to speak today and share my experiences and journey about attending school here and my career with where I am now.

After graduating from here, I went onto Clontarf Aboriginal College in Waterford where they specialised in a basketball program that incorporated education through sport. Growing up I loved basketball, so choosing Clontarf to complete Year 11 and 12 was an easy decision for me. The Girls Academy Basketball Program was founded by ex-Perth Wildcats basketball legend Ricky Grace, who is now the CEO.

Attending Clontarf and being part of the Girls Academy opened up many avenues for me, which Congratulations to the graduating class of 2020! included, travel, hospitality, sport, TEE and You should be proud of your achievements as I Aboriginal studies. This is where my career went to another level!

From good to great! I worked so hard at my job and I progressed within the company from Executive Assistant to Supervisor, to Manager before eventually joining our partner company “The Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporations” as the Company Secretary and Operations Officer.

I continued to work really hard and put in 100% every day. It wasn’t knowing the answer to every question, but it was the little wins that got me through. Being on time for work, being early, working back late when I had to, helping my colleagues when they needed assistance and sharing my knowledge, even if that meant putting me back on my tasks.

So after transitioning to the Federation and being employed for about 2 months, another opportunity presented itself within the company. This wasn’t just any opportunity, this was an opportunity to act in the role of Chief Executive Officer for a few weeks.

identified that it’s about learning along the way and adjusting your journey to reach your destination.

Other things besides work and school for me included travelling the world to places including London, Paris, Rome, Singapore, Bali and the USA. A few highlights would have to be achieving a childhood dream of climbing the Statue of Liberty in New York City and attending The Staples Centre in Los Angeles to watch the late Kobe Bryant and his LA Lakers defeat Steph Curry and his Golden State Warriors. Other highlights included visiting Disneyland in Florida and California, SeaWorld in Texas, watching the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, high tea in the Burj Khalifa Dubai and climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

My advice to the graduating class of 2020, would be to make the most of every opportunity, because you never know where it could lead.

At this stage, I had a hundred different thoughts going through my head such as:  Can I even do the job?  I don’t think I’m ready  I have very little management and executive experience I just didn’t think I was ready. This is where I learned that “you never know if and when you’re ready so you just have to do it to see how you go and learn along the way”.

So – I accepted the challenge and acted in the role of Chief Executive Officer. This lasted more than a few weeks, months had gone by and I was still in the role. A perfect example of proving that not everything will go to plan! So within the space of 2 years, I went from being the CEOs Executive Assistant, to actually being the CEO! I could never have dreamed of being a CEO for a company in Melbourne at the age of 30! I’m from a small country town in the Wheatbelt, and that’s not the vision I had. I am still currently working for the Federation in Melbourne, but due to Covid-19 I am currently working from home, with a return to Melbourne planned for June 2021.

A lot of my experiences have not gone to plan.

I’ve got things wrong. I didn’t like elements of my job and I’ve changed my mind many times. This should not be seen as failure, but more of a lesson learned. It’s ok to change your mind and choose a different path until you find something you like or are passionate about. In reflection I’ve PAGE 31

Warrior Wellbeing Gauge Your Guts – why it’s important!

As a nation we are continually being told that we are fat and getting fatter with two thirds of Australian adults now considered overweight or obese. This is no surprise when most of us are living a more sedentary lifestyle and eating more highly processed foods. While we might like to joke at the pub about our ‘6-pack turning into a keg’ there are some serious risks to our health and wellbeing if our panels are bulging.

Carrying around extra weight increases our risk of chronic illnesses including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease (pump and pipes), and some cancers including bowel, kidney, and thyroid. So, how do we determine if we are carrying around risky levels of excess fat?

Keep in mind, this is a guide only and identifying risk should always involve a discussion with our GP about a holistic approach to our current health behaviours. If after gauging our guts we find that our panels are bulging, there are some simple steps we can all take to reduce that waistline:

Two of the main recognised methods are body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference. The BMI is a quick measure that compares our weight to our height. The BMI is a useful but not perfect measure because of its inability to distinguish fat mass from lean mass and the distribution of body fat. The waist circumference (measured from tummy button) is a good measure of the risks associated with excess weight because of its ability to indicate fat in the high-risk locations. It is well known that excess fat around our middle carries the risk of obesity related health issues due to its link to visceral fat (the dangerous fat that coats our internal organs). Due to hormonal differences, our stomach area is where blokes often store fat, as opposed to women where it often gets deposited on the hips and thighs.

Move more - walking the dog or kicking the footy are good places to start and incorporates exercise into our daily lives.

Choose smaller portion sizes - adopt an eating pattern where our food intake matches our calorie needs.

Adopt a healthy diet – eat more fruit and veg, less junk food and sugary drinks.

Limit alcohol intake – drink no more than two standard drinks per day, incorporate alcohol-free days and remember “low carb beer” isn’t necessarily low calorie!

Don’t be tempted by unsustainable “fad diets” that promise quick results and may involve eliminating foods that contain necessary fuel that our bodies need. Remember, we always need to consult our GP or other health professional (dietitian, physiotherapist etc.) if we plan on making substantial exercise or dietary changes.
