Hello there 2020. I’m going to completely ignore your first 31 days because to be honest I’m not sure where they went, or if they even existed, so really – this is week one. If you happened to do something productive with your elusive January days, kudos to you – you’ve got a head start on the rest of us! I’m actually somewhat sitting in both camps. I spent my Jan in the blissful winter of central Europe (I saw snow in Poland! I drank Champagne in France!), it was much fun and a far more comfortable climate that the Wheatbelt at current. I, of course, even learnt a few things: Heaps about WWII Peaking through windows and walking around lobbies is just as cultural - and far more affordable - than actually buying the museum entry ticket I can sleep VERY well on airport benches, particularly when it means saving cash on a night’s accommodation And the most shocking: they don’t use top sheets! On beds or on benches. It’s ridiculous. You gotta have a top sheet. But for real, I’m feeling fresh (it’s literally day one back at work, novelty obviously hasn’t worn off just yet), clear and ready for an epically huge 2020. Which is lucky, because it feels like we really have hit the ground running already. Our February events list at the Quairading CRC includes our annual Cuppa with a Copper (including Bickie with a Banker!) next Friday 14th February—romantic, we know! Pop down from 9:30am to chat to our local bankers and coppers. The following week we’ve managed to secure a visit from Kidsafe WA, who will be delivering a short and sweet workshop regarding child safety at home, on the farm, during play and on the road—let us know if you plan on joining us for that one (Wednesday 19th, 10am til 11am). And pushing through to March, we’ll be hosting a very cool workshop with Johanna from Wild and Waste Free (Narrogin based!) about how to reduce your waste! Keep an eye on our social media and the Passion Sheet for details on that one through the month. So many things to keep you informed, engaged and better equipped for the year ahead! Happy Feb! The Quairading community celebrated the start of the Christmas season with a Carols evening Sunday December 8, 2019. The evening was held at the Shire Hall. Thank you to everyone who helped, supported and donated on the evening. The Singing Buddies & QDHS Scripture students were superb. $355.30 was raised and sent to the Royal flying Doctor Service. We thank you for remembering those in need and wish you every blessing for 2020. The Anglican, Catholic, Four-Square and Uniting churches of Quairading.

There’s some pretty handing funding open for applications at the moment including: The Regional Arts Fund (RAF) Project Fund Designed to support and promote participation in, and access to, arts and culture. The Regional Arts Fund is an Australian Government initiative supporting sustainable cultural development in regional and remote Australia. The aim is to support regional and remote communities, and individual artists to create high quality arts projects that develop partnerships and networks, broaden community engagement and increase employment and professional development opportunities for regional and remote artists. Round 1 2020 is open for projects that will commence after 1 July 2020 and be completed by 30 June 2021. Up to $15,000 for individuals. Up to $30,000 for organisations. Now open for projects commencing after 1 July 2020. Closes 11:59pm Friday 6 March 2020 Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support, Grant Round 2019/20 Funding will be provided to organisations for activities that best contribute to delivery of the following Program outcomes: • a professional, viable and ethical Indigenous visual arts industry that features strong participation and provides economic opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people • the continued production, exhibition, critique, purchase and collection of Indigenous visual art. Grant Activity Timeframe 1-July-2020 to 30-June-2022. Estimated Grant Value: From $5,000 to $80,000

AUSTRALIA DAY Council would like to thank all those who participated and attended the Great Aussie Brunch on Sunday 26th January 2020. Council had a record Community turnout estimated at 220 Community Members and friends. The following Community Members received special recognition awards by Council on Australia Day: CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD This prestigious Award was presented to Mr Noel stone on Australia Day 2020 in recognition of his tireless enthusiasm and participation in Community Groups and Activities within the Quairading District over many years RECOGNITION OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS Miss Indiana Squiers was presented a Certificate by Council on behalf of the Quairading Community in recognition of your outstanding achievement in representing the State and Quairading in Cricket and Netball in 2019.’ Mrs Carol Dall and Mrs Kelsie Squiers on behalf of the Ladies Hockey Club were presented a Certificate by Council on behalf of the Quairading Community in recognition of the Bullettes winning 3 successive Hockey Grand Finals. QDHS NEWS Dear Families, Carers and the Quairading Community, Welcome back for the 2020 school year! School began Monday with teachers and children excited to be back into the familiar routine and meet up with friends, colleagues and new faces to the school. We have had a lot of maintenance work completed in the school over the holidays and classrooms are refreshed ready for the new school year. We have some new secondary bathrooms soon to come into operation, they are very modern, bright and shiny. We have about 117 children in the school although the official number is finalised on Friday of next week. Attendance was positive on our first day back. I met with all students and staff for an assembly Monday morning at which time we set the scene for the year and outlined the Festival of Q activities that happen next week. Children were reminded that we set high expectations for all students in our school and encourage them to be motivated to achieve their full potential. Our students are inspired to become lifelong learners, contributing to their individual, local and global community. In our school in 2020 you will see: Students who are engaged, motivated and active learners, demonstrating PRIDE in every aspect of their schooling; Students who are positive and firm believers in ‘the power of yet’, continuously producing QUALITY work, symbolic of their strong desire to achieve individual academic and non-academic success; Students who RESPECT others and themselves and are driven to be self-regulating and assessment capable; Students who are kind, compassionate and GRACIOUS citizens who promote an inclusive friendly environment and a sense of belonging for all. We recapped that being thankful is part of grace and that there are many people who have suffered great hardship over the Christmas break. We are grateful that we have our school intact, clean and fresh, ready to start school, and that we are healthy and uninjured. At the assembly we talked about attendance, as excellent attendance is very important to a successful student. It is very important for us to come every day to ensure we continue with our strong learning, getting all the practice we need and to maintain the relationships we develop at school. Relationships and excellent attendance are very important to a successful student. It’s not OK to be away. We welcome three new teachers to our school for 2020. Mrs Magdalen Johnston (Year 4-5-6) comes to us from Woodlands Grove PS in Byford and is very excited about the prospect of working in a multi aged group. Magdalen’s experience of curriculum and team leadership in a large school is going to be a great bonus for us. Miss Brydie Wellham (Year 4-5-6) comes to from Quirindi PS in NSW, recently relocating to York. Brydie was successful in our teacher pool recruitment process in term four last year. Mrs Erin Dunne (Year 2-3) has completed her Remote Teaching Service in Warburton and was awarded redeployment through that process. Already she is exhibiting great strategies and experience to bring to her class and our school, and her students are working hard. Over the break I completed a process to fill the Acting Deputy position for term one whilst we recruit a person for the remainder of the year. Demonstrating strong leadership histories, Miss Rebecca Wilson and Mrs Magdalen Johnston were successful in that process and each will undertake two days of the Deputy Principal role through the week. Miss Wilson will be Deputy Principal on Monday and Wednesday, and Mrs Johnston on Thursday and Friday. (continued over page)

Also as the school year began, Mrs Kelsie Squiers applied for and was awarded Senior Teacher status. Senior Teachers are required to support the school in activities such as: • providing mentoring, supervision, professional support, counselling and guidance for teachers (including student teachers and graduate teachers), about classroom performance, curriculum implementation and resource development; • developing pedagogy and contributing to curriculum development; • effectively contributing to the leadership of school development planning and identifying priorities, and to formal school decision-making process; and • other duties as required by the Principal. Congratulations Mrs Squiers. An exciting event will occur next week for students enrolled at school. The Festival of Q will include an inflatable slide, face painting, fun games and activities and a whole school photo and will occur on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th of February. Feel free to join us after recess on either of these days. I am looking forward to a busy year in the pursuit of knowledge, personal growth and successful students. QDHS AWARDS DAY ADDRESS
Delivered by Jill Hayes, 17 December 2019 Thank you for the introduction – and for the air time, I really do love being on this stage – even without my singing and dancing ensemble, or my sequin jacket. My name is Jill Hayes. I’m a born and bred Quairading local – which is a legitimate claim to fame - and even more importantly, I am a Quairading District High School alumnus. I had to google that word, turns out it’s a fancy term for “former student”. According to the very gracious invitation I received from the school to speak here today, my “successful pursuit of varied goals” and my “strong community presence” make me a “positive role model” for students. Which I’m pretty chuffed about. I was never one of those kids who knew exactly what they wanted to be when they grew up – except for a brief time when we all wanted to be Dolphin Trainers because there was this one really cool book in the library about dolphins doing tricks. Man I hope it’s still there and someone knows the book I’m talking about?! I was however, one of those incredibly fortunate weirdos who LOVED school. I liked to learn new things and understand them properly. I spent most of my school years here in Quairading, up to Year 9 – and from what I can recall was quite a breeze. Which I’ll have to put down to fantastic staff, a good bunch of peers and great family support. Our year group was a small one so we had no choice but to get on and look after each other. Being a tight knit bunch made Year 7 camp an epic week away, and thanks to the videos made by our teacher Mr Gunn, I maintain lots of very fun memories from our week in Geraldton and Kalbarri. I remember Year 8 being a pretty big deal as we moved into the senior classrooms, and fun fact, welcomed Mrs Fraser by being her very first class in Quairading. I had the very privileged opportunity to choof off to boarding school, and spent Years 10, 11 and 12 at St Mary’s in Karrinyup. Aside from crying for a week straight at the overwhelm of living with 190 other hormonal teenage girls, it was an absolute hoot. Boarding school is an incredibly unique experience and really a perfect incubator of lifelong friendships. Just like sharing a dorm on Year 7 camp, you PAGE 36
learn far more than you ever think you needed to about your friends. Through my later high school years, I still didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I found that I was increasingly motivated by doing a job well done – which meant working harder, paying more attention in class, studying efficiently each night and preparing well for exams. In selecting TEE subjects – which is what we called it back in my day, is it WACE now? Or ATAR?– I got to choose the things I enjoyed doing (which for me were English and Media Studies) and got to opt out of the things I didn’t like doing (which was all of the sciences). I found that I liked the opportunity to be more creative and the subjects that didn’t have clear cut, black and white answers. I liked being able to come up with my own answer and use persuasion and reasoning to show why it could be a correct answer. Yes I feel you left-brain-thinkers in the room rolling your eyes right now. In finding the subjects that I legitimately enjoyed, I legit loved TEE and performed very well. University prospects wise, I had the marks to do literally any course I wanted – maybe bar medicine. Which was great, except I still didn’t have a freaking clue of what I wanted to be when I grew up. Lots of people told me that they saw me doing something FUN, and COOL and AMAZING. So I searched, but I couldn’t find any of those on the course lists. I wanted to take a gap year – which really meant just a year of partying. My Mum and Dad being the wise folk they are swiftly discouraged that. I could see benefit to myself in gaining a higher education and a qualification, and after a great schooling experience I decided a uni degree was the go. My top 6 course selection might as well have been randomly generated, I think it included psychology, anthropology, arts, commerce and urban planning. Each at a different university. I received multiple offers and ended up going with Commerce at Curtin Uni, because it sounded the vaguest and easiest. By the end of first year I realised a few things: Staying motivated at uni was a whole lot

harder than at school, especially without the compulsory boarding house evening study and patrolling house mothers. Having a Tavern on campus was very dangerous. And that I still didn’t know what commerce meant.
4 and a half years of a three year degree later – I learnt it was just a fancy word for “business”. And yes, I only learnt that by googling it. So I got through uni. I graduated, I was “qualified”. But I still didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up. I went travelling for a few months through Canada and America - because YOLO. When I got home, I applied for a bunch of boring jobs, got a bunch of boring job offers, and spent an incredibly mind-numbing four weeks doing cold call sales for terminate inspections at Allpest in Cannington. It would have been two weeks but I forced myself to stick it out for two weeks, before handing in my two weeks notice. I had finally realised that I needed to be doing something that I loved, and living somewhere that I loved. Which is when I moved back to Quairading. I convinced the Quairading CRC to employ me for a couple of days a week and I also started a small business. By the end of that year the incredible job of Coordinator of the Quairading CRC came up and as of last month I’ve been in that role for 4 years. In this role I’ve been able to do heaps of things I love doing – such as meticulously planning events, creatively writing grant applications and helping people learn new skills – all while having a positive impact on my community. And as of today I’ve realised that I actually am doing something FUN, COOL and AMAZING. How ‘bout that. Living in a small community, I’ve had heaps of opportunities come my way. And thanks to my desire to try new things, help out and do a job well done – I’ve had trouble turning any of them down. Things like volunteer positions on multiple committees (ag society, football club, curtain raisers, rainmakers for examples), representing Quairading in a Rural Ambassador competition, doing various radio interviews and most recently – directing a fabulous musical. On this very stage. From my short, 27 year story – I can offer you this advice: Find things you love doing. If it pays, you’ve
FEBRUARY 2020
struck the mother load. But if it doesn’t, spend some of your time doing it anyway. You’ll gain enjoyment by doing it which will make you a happier person. I think it is our responsibility, as functioning members of society to be happy. At least some of the time. That happiness will be extrapolated if the things you love doing have a positive effect on your community – therefore it shouldn’t be anything illegal… I consciously determine my success based on my happiness – and career wise, even though I’m in an ideal job right now, it doesn’t mean it’s peachy and happy all the time. I mean, unpacking the dishwasher at work doesn’t make me happy, but having a nice clean mug for my double shot coffee in the morning does. Listening to someone complain about a frustrating government process doesn’t make me happy, but giving them five minutes for a chat to help them see the positives of a situation does. Seeing my bank account diminish over time doesn’t make me happy – but Postman Mick delivering me all my online shopping sure does! Second to that – be aware of opportunities, and throw yourself at them. Be vulnerable and crazy enough to say yes to things outside of your comfort, or knowledge zone. It could be a new job, a new task, an opportunity to direct a play or speak at an awards day. Say yes – and work out how the hell to do it later. It will mean research, asking others for advice, heaps of googling and late night speech writing – and if you can ignore the feelings of imposter syndrome for long enough - you’ll come out the other side with more experience, more confidence and perhaps another thing to whack on your resume! So if you’re heading into next year with a clear idea of what you’re doing – bravo. Take every opportunity that’s going to help you get there. If you don’t have a clue – do. not. stress. You’ve got so much time to figure things out. And to then change your mind and figure it out ten times more. And to hopefully perfectly, demonstrate this point – to all of you adults out there: hands up if you still don’t know what you want to be when you grow up… *this is where everyone seamlessly raises their hand* See – we’re all just making it up as we go! Habits, Routines and our Wellbeing We are creatures of habit and routine so how does this affect our wellbeing? Our wellbeing is often described as a state of being content, healthy, secure, safe and happy. To have good wellbeing requires planning, making decisions, having a sense of purpose, a sense of hope, something to look forward to and then some luck. The routine part of our life can contain components that are monotonous, predictable, regular, scheduled and sometimes become habitual. One of my habits is watching the 7pm ABC news and weather (when not on the road), checking emails and checking my twitter feed. The first thing I do when on a break is to stop this!
Join a club that we have never been to before (perhaps a men’s shed). Start a hobby, develop an interest. Try doing nothing for a while (some mindfulness). This is good for our wellbeing as it acts as a recharge for all our chemicals in our body and can help us get the balance right. Exercise of any kind is beneficial. We don’t have to run marathons or go to a gym (sometimes that may help) but simply get moving in any way is a good thing. It may involve joining a sporting club that you have never belonged to, walking with a friend. Volunteering. The world is run by volunteers! Volunteering is often a gateway to many other opportunities in life that we may never have thought of opening, literally a two-way process. Try a short stint with a group during the holidays you may be surprised.
How do our daily routines affect our wellbeing? We know there are some things we must do every day just to survive, but mixing it up, changing our daily routines and breaking certain habits, even for a short time, can have positive effects on our overall wellbeing. QUAIRADING AQUATIC CLUB The second half of our season is nearly upon us! It is set to be a super busy time with numerous swim meets and carnivals on top of our normal program. Training commences on Monday 3rd of February. Same times as last year, 3.20pm for all junior dolphins and 4pm for intermediates and seniors. The next few weeks will see us doing a lot of competition ready practice. Please ensure that our swimmers are prepared with a minimum of racing swimwear, long hair tied back and goggles. We highly recommend the use of caps for all swimmers. Club caps are available for purchase at a cost of $10. We have three inter town competitions coming up: Corrigin Swim Meet on Sunday 16 th February, our own swim meet on Sunday 23rd February & Narembeen Swim Meet on Saturday 15th March. These are not compulsory for attendance but are a great experience, especially our own competition. Scott is our inter town coordinator and will ask for names and race nominations closer to each event. Each race event usually cost $5 for entry, i.e. freestyle race $5, breaststroke race $5 etc. Our fingers are crossed also that we may have a specialist coach visiting in one of the first few weeks back. We have regional funding available but are in the process of being told if we can find a coach!! Friends and family are invited to attend this presentation which will commence at approximately 4.15pm, after our championship races that start at 3.20pm. In the near future you will see a brand new weatherproof, enclosed notice board at the pool that has been purchased by our club. Many thanks to the Shire of Quairading for their generous contribution that has allowed us to go ahead with this project. Hopefully by the time this goes to press we will have it installed and in use!! Happy swimming!

DOODENANNING SPORTING CLUB. The Doodenanning Sporting Club was successful in applying to the Shire of Quairading for financial assistance through the Shire Community Grants Scheme to renew the concrete pad adjacent to the Doodenanning hall southern exit doors. The new concrete pad provides a safe entry and exit point from the hall to the tennis courts. The pad also provides a convenient outdoor setting for Al Fresco dining, as seen in the photo, taken on Saturday evening, 1 February. The members of the Doodenanning Sporting Club would like to express their sincere thanks to the Shire for making the new concrete pad possible. The members want to also acknowledge and thank Phil Dicker, President and all-round handy-man for the club, for his great work in preparing the site and assisting in laying the concrete. Thanks Phil. When the weather cools down, a busy-bee will be organised to spruce up the 12hole golf course in preparation for the coming season. All players, old and new, are welcome to come and play on Saturday afternoons.
