Wheatbelt Ball

On Friday 24th November the QDHS students attended the Wheatbelt Ball at Beverley Town Hall.

There were 93 students in attendance from Beverley DHS, York DHS, Brookton DHS, Wagin DHS and Quairading DHS. The students had an evening of loud music, dance, food, and games. We really wish to thank Sharyn Morrell and the team at Beverley DHS for organising the evening.

Quairading Ladies Bowls Gala Day Another very successful Gala Day was held on Friday 3rd November with 22 teams (88 Competitors) representing 16 towns from surrounding districts competing, including one Quairading team. The weather this year was kind making for very enjoyable bowls.

The winner and the runner up teams were both from York. Third was Brookton, Forth was Merredin and Fifth was Northam. Congratulations to these ladies.

Congratulations to Janice Sinclair and Christine Gimbel on such a well run event.

Many thanks to the catering co-ordinator Becky Wilson, kitchen helpers, bar staff and all members who provided food on the day. We had many comments on the delicious variety of salads and also the assortment of afternoon tea.

Thanks go to the Bowling Club men and helpers for preparing the rink surrounds making our Club the envy of many of our visitors.

Only four more weeks of this year for us at REED Quairading and we are all very much looking forward to our end of year Christmas party with the families of our children.

November has been a busy month at the centre with recycling week and Food Safety Week. For recycling week, we used bottle tops, donated by the community, the make a huge snake!

Making the snake involved threading which helps with fine motor skills, patience and hand eye co-ordination.

Food Safety Week turned into Healthy Food week for us as it is more age appropriate. We made a bid rainbow and the children selected pictures of foods and stuck them on the matching colour.

We also did a spaghetti sensory experience, where the children had to put the coloured spaghetti into the bowl of the same colour, to help with colour recognition.

Start Planning to Plan Brant Jansen – Byfields Director Northam & York Well, it's that time of year again – harvest is in full swing, and before you know it, we'll be decking the halls for Christmas and enjoying some holiday downtime.

Where does the time go? I’m not sure – which is why it's crucial to set aside some of it for planning.

As farming businesses are becoming bigger and more complex, I am seeing a lot more clients holding annual (and sometimes more frequent) strategic and planning meetings with their group of advisers, generally the accountant, farm consultant and bank manager.

If you aren’t already doing this, I encourage you to have a think about starting this in 2024 after your budget is completed. It's a great opportunity for the whole family, as business owners, to sit down together and discuss important matters in an open setting.

Topics that I generally see discussed include the budget overview, preliminary tax planning discussions, grain marketing, review of structure, review of banking facilities, HR & OHS, future land purchases, equipment changeovers, review of succession plans, review of retirement plans, and review of estate plans.

These are more formal topics, but you can also chat about operational matters as well – from agreement on working hours, to holidays plans, to how often everyone would like to see internal finance reports being sent around.

I can add many other things to the list, but what’s important is that you make a list of topics that all family members contribute to.

Best practice is to have a formal agenda and some meeting minutes taken with an action plan. But if you’re not quite at that stage yet, writing the list on the farm office whiteboard or on the back of a coke carton still works! At least it’s a start, and even better if you can jot down some meeting points to refer to the next time you have a meeting.

Most importantly, make sure all the family members involved in the business are there.

Planning and keeping the communication lines open is vital in any business. So, take a moment to think about how you’re going to invest your time planning in 2024. Then contact your accountant or me at Byfields Business Advisers on 0417 221 176, to commence discussions around starting the plan.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt We’re probably all heartily sick of hearing weather events being described as “unprecedented”, however, I can’t find another descriptor for what we have experienced this November. We haven’t been in the area for as long as many of the readers so I can only rely on records. While very hot days are not unusual, the long spell of over 34 degrees which we enduring as I write, is certainly an unwelcome record. So how does this affect our gardens?

Hopefully we have been heeding the warnings and have prepared them as best we could. This is a repetition of what has been previously suggested: shade cloth for vegetables and tender plants, mulch for all garden beds and deep watering for all shrubs and trees. There is now another weapon to add to your arsenal of plant protection.

This product can be sprayed on to the foliage of any plant to help reduce transpiration. The product names are Plant Wax, Drought Shield, Floraguard and Envy. Some of these can be purchased at any hardware store in small containers others come in larger containers for commercial gardeners. These can also be used to protect plants from frost.

The GLGG first meeting for 2024 will be on the 31st January at 9:30 at the CRC in Quairading. Please join this very inspiring group to learn more about enjoying your garden.

Plant of the Month – In some areas this tree can be weedy. In the Wheatbelt it certainly is not! For while many seedlings may come up in late winter none survive our summers and if one or two do remain, they are easily pulled out. The tree is the Koelreuteria paniculata or the Indian Rain Tree or Golden Rain tree. It has a rounded form with the ends of the branches having a slight drooping habit which give the tree a weeping look. It is a deciduous tree, its serrated leaves turning golden in autumn. Bright yellow flowers are formed in summer and are followed by papery lantern like seed pods. The trunks are very similar to the York Gum with furrowed bark. The tree has a moderate growth rate and at maturity the Indian Rain Tree can reach a modest 6 metres in height and 4 metres in width. These trees are extremely drought tolerant and frost hardy. This tree would be just as suitable for a small courtyard garden as it would be for large farm setting.

This Month in the Garden It’s time to – Maximise your harvest by hand pollinating all the Cucurbit family – pumpkins, cucumbers, melons, zucchini; prune back grapevines that put on a huge amount growth at this time to ensure good airflow and prevent them becoming a tangled mess; check pot plants after watering to see if water is actually penetrating to the root ball; remove ants which may be trying to make a nest in pots; dead head roses to keep the blooms coming, prune back the spring flowering roses which will be now finished; take cuttings from Buxus, Daphne and most native shrubs, keep the cuttings covered with plastic in a shaded area; anyone interested in Hydrangeas check out new varieties in nurseries while they are blooming; enjoy

Mandevillas while they are at their best, they do very well in pots in a morning sun position, mine does extremely well with just one watering per week; sprinkle water on the compost pile to keep it moist; seaweed solution on your lawn to strength the grass against the heat and finally spruce up out door areas where you may be entertain over the festive season, pressure hose paving, remove any dead or old plants and replace with advanced seedlings of petunias, vincas or other flowering annuals or even Poinsettieas.

Sow – a crop of snake beans, more dwarf beans, more carrots and later in early January sow more tomatoes which will fruit in autumn when the present crop has all but finished fruiting.

Plant – more lettuce seedlings in the veggie garden, plant Mandevillas, tropical trees and shrubs and autumn flowering bulbs like Nerines Harvest – in the veggie garden we have picked the last of the asparagus, beans have started, and going strong are the silver beet, carrots, tomatoes, radish, lettuce, zucchini and now the onion crop has been harvested during the last week. In the orchard there are still some mulberries both white and red, the cherries have all been picked (only about half a kilo this year), with this hot weather the apricots are ripening fast I can hardly keep up with drying them and today we picked the last of the late Navel Oranges which didn’t colour up very well this year but are still very sweet and juicy.

The last word – Flowers are restful to look at. They have neither emotions nor conflicts.

Warrior Wellbeing Article Our team at Regional Men’s Health talk to a lot of blokes, the other important side to this is we also do a lot of listening. Comments that often come up, especially from men of the older generation is I wish I had spent more time with my kids, or I spent my life busting my guts working and missed out on a lot of the little things.

Life can sometimes be a double-edged sword and I personally have the utmost respect for men who saw their primary role as the breadwinner and gave precedence to their work, with the best interest of their family in mind. The downside to this, of course, was that these men were quite often too busy with work, or away from the family, to be able to commit time at home to do some of the little things that are now considered commonplace.

My partner did an amazing job giving birth to all three of our children at home (under the supervision of an experienced midwife) and I was actively encouraged to be involved through all stages of the pregnancy and birthing process. My experience, of course, is vastly different to that of men from my grandfather’s era, who were told by the midwife well you have done your job, we’ll let you know when we need you!

In modern society the family structure varies and there are no set rules on who does what. Women have historically been considered the carers and nurturers, but they may also have careers. The question I have is are we as open and accepting of men who show a nurturing and caring side as well as a commitment to his working and professional career? Is this balance possible?

Spending time with the kids is a priority for many blokes and I believe some of the most enjoyable and rewarding times comes from being in their company. Don’t get me wrong we will all have times when we’re challenged, tested (usually our patience) and sometimes even question our ability as a father, this is normal. In addition to this we need to be aware of and manage our work, spend time with our partner and make time to explore our own passions and interests (self-care).

A few tips for father and father/mentor figures out there: • Don’t be afraid of the everyday tasks when our child is born; changing nappies, bathing, feeding, they’re all important bonding opportunities; • As our kids grow get to know them and take an interest in their passions, interests, hopes, dreams and schooling; • Talk to our kids, ask them how their day was, tell them about our day; • Reading is one of the simplest beneficial things we can do with them; • There is a saying if we spent twice as much time and half the amount of money on our children we and they would be better off. Keep it simple, time and presence are the most precious gift.

To those men out there who may carry feelings of regret, guilt or loss about what they missed out on with their children, don’t forget that any guy can be a Dad, but it takes someone special to be a Father. Even if our children are now adults don’t forget every child, no matter what their age, seeks the approval of their father. Tell our kids today that we’re proud of them and we love them.

This month we have heard about the judgement stories Jesus told ,there was the talents some were increased but one did’nt the Vine yard owner who went away leaving managers in charge. The last one when there was those ho did good works and did not know it .It is a story of how we act when we follow Jesus and those who miss out. Much to think about and quite challenging.
