Tuesday was a pretty rude reminder that summer’s knocking on our door wasn't it?! As are the trucks on the road, the annoyingly early sunrises, the delightfully late sunsets and the bloomin’ insects and spiders. But also, Summer means Christmas and Christmas means pretty decorations, and cooking and family time and a few days off work—all of which I’m very much looking forward to.

A few things to tick off between now and that Christmas morning glass (bottle) of bubbles though!

Reinmakers Christmas Party on Friday 4th December (a free, fun and festive community Chrissy party for all!), the Rainmakers crew have secured heaps of local business support (and are crossing fingers for some last minute Lotterywest support!) and have a ripper evening lined up.

Get down from 4:30pm to join in!

A slightly different offering (but not really that different) for end of year Seniors events from us and the Shire of Quairading—we’re hosting an afternoon of Drag Bingo on Tuesday 7th December! I’m absolutely tickled pink that we were able to secure one of THE BEST drag performers in Perth at the moment, Dean Misdale (plus an offsider) to host bingo, sing some songs and be fabulously entertaining.

Drag is a true artform and a professional performance. If you know and love Priscilla and RuPaul, or even Dame Edna and Mrs Brown—or none of the above, it’s set to be a fun (and potentially eye opening) afternoon out. Get in touch with as at the CRC to book your spot. All ages of adults are welcome!

From there we’ll be coasting on through to the end of year and getting ready to abandon our desks for a short while (we’ll be closed on Christmas Eve through until Tuesday 5th Jan, and just here Tuesday—Thursday 9am—4:30pm through January). If you’ve got Christmas canvases to order, cards for us to design, newsletters for us to print or anything in between—pretty please hop to it.

Passion Sheet’s will continue through December and January (in weeks we’re open) and so long as the aircon keeps up, I’ll write to you again right here, in late January for the February 2021 edition of the Banksia Bulletin—the best rag in town.

Loose Stitches We are nearly through 2020 and we survived, phew!!! I know that being able to go to my sewing room and create something beautiful helped me fly through I – Sew – lation. I came across this quote and thought it summed up what we were thinking through lock down “The longer this goes on the harder it will be to return to a society where pants and bras are required”.

November was another busy month for the Loosies girls, we had a bus load of ladies (all 37 of them) from WAQA (WA Quilters Association) visit us on Saturday the 7th. This was their annual ‘Country Shop Hop’.

The bus came to us via the Northam Craft Centre. It was great fun as we tizzied up the Courtyard next to the shop with quilts and lots of sale items. Thanks to QTTTC for allowing us to use this space.

As it is only 28 days til Christmas (OMG) we have loads of great Christmas gift ideas in the shop, scarves, glasses, coffee cups, wooden cutting boards, salad servers, kids hats, earrings, bags and loads more, pop in and have a look.

Harrison’s Ballet Journey Update November 2020

Well, it has been a strange year, but I feel we are settling at last to a certain equilibrium. After dance and dance training classes being on Zoom, and at home learning, finally, in term 3 Harrison and his fellow dancers returned to classes in the dance studio.

He had the opportunity to take part in the Perth Flamenco Festival, and it was wonderful to watch him dance, and to see the other amazing Flamenco dancers from various Spanish dance schools around Perth perform. It is an amazing annual event, held over 3 days that includes workshops and music and fashion, as well as dance performances, for all ages, beginners through to advanced performers. He (and Scarlett) loved it!

He moved on to stage exams, held at John Curtin College of the Arts. Harrison danced well, and we loved watching him and his fellow dancers perform both Contemporary Dance and Classical Ballet.

WA Ballet also run auditions once a year for a Masterclass, for dance students 13 years and over, and Harrison’s audition was successful this year, which was wonderful. He will get to do a Masterclass once a month at WA Ballet in Maylands, be able to watch the Company rehearse, and will also get to attend Dress Rehearsals of all the upcoming performances in 2021. Super exciting!

Harrison also continues to be a part of the Australian Ballet School’s Interstate Training Programme, in Level 3 for 2021. Hopefully he will be able to travel to Melbourne again next year, an experience we missed out on this year.

Charlesworth Ballet School will be presenting their end of year performance, Don Quixote, at The Crown again this year, on Friday 18th December (evening), and two performances on Saturday 19th December. It should be a marvellous show.

It was with great sadness to Harrison and our family, that we farewelled his friend and supporter, Rowlie Mellor. Rowlie always took the time to find out how Harrison was progressing and helped with raising funds in the early days when we were bewildered by the journey Harrison’s love for dance was taking us on. We are truly blessed to have known such a wonderful supporter of young people.

Rest In Peace Rowlie. We will miss you.

More cricket tales!

The Quairading Cricket Association came into being in 1952 and consisted of four teams -- Dangin, Quairading, North Quairading and Wamenusking. The teams battled it out on almost every summer Sunday until 1987 when low player numbers deemed it necessary to wind things up. Two teams from Quairading then joined the East Avon association. Today, just the one Quairading side remains and they play teams from Brookton, Beverley, York, Tammin and Kellerberrin.

During the old four-team era the QCA used to play in several association competitions.

Two teams were picked and they represented Quairading in such competitions as the Bland Shield (“A” Grade) and the O’Neil Shield (“B” Grade) against teams from the Bruce Rock-Narembeen CA and the Kalgarin-Hyden CA. Over many years, betwixt our normal local fixtures, these games were keenly fought out on a home-and-away basis, with the three associations playing each other twice. The A and B teams with the highest win-loss ratio plus batting and bowling points were deemed the winner. The one-day Prudential Cup was another competition that Quairading was involved in. This was a statewide affair involving associations from all over country Western Australia and the Quairading boys performed very well reaching high into the finals on several occasions.

And, of course, there was Countryweek. The annual weeklong competition was held in Perth and Quairading regularly sent two teams. The A team played very successfully in the higher grades, spending several seasons in the “A” Division. This was a terrific performance by the QCA when it’s realised that our little district was playing teams which drew from much larger populated areas such as Albany, Bunbury and Geraldton (to name just a few). In fact, if I may so boldly suggest, the QCA would have been possibly the smallest association to play in the Countryweek “A” Grade competition. However, with that, the QCA boys always gave a spirited display and were very rarely, if at all, caught out of their depth.

The other Quairading team, affectionately known as “F” Troop (because that’s the grade they played in!), never quite reached the heights of their brothers in the top side. They had very competitive sides and quite often started the week with some good wins. But, as the games began on a Wednesday and carried through with the finals being held the following Wednesday, there was always one huge obstacle. The “F” Troop boys had to negotiate the week-end!

Saturday and Sunday were allocated by the authorities as a couple of rest days.

Rest days indeed????!!

Monday! The morning after the weekend was always a bit of a nightmare for the skipper.

As well as the usual jobs of arranging lunches, drinks and getting the gear to the ground, the poor old captain had to try and locate half his team. Some had gone to the wrong ground, some had got lost, some were late arrivals and some had just not got out of bed.

(Or were just getting into bed!!). No mobile phones in these times and, as you would expect, the lads played the next couple of days accordingly. They never quite reached their potential after the weekend. But they still enjoyed themselves.

Many characters and stories grew from the “F” Troop era and, for those who played, they were memorable times. Countryweek and association tales are still being told and retold around the bar. Some unbelievable but all true!

One humorous tale came about when the lads played a game - after the weekend - where they found themselves, as usual, in a little spot of bother. After fielding first, those who PAGE 26

were brave enough checked the scorebook and saw that they were chasing a pretty hefty score. The weekend had “kicked in“ disastrously! After several dropped catches and umpteen misfields, coupled with some wayward bowling and a general “lethargic” attitude, it appeared the weekend’s shenanigans had been their downfall. And then it came their turn to bat. Oh dear! The skipper, Twa, looked a forlorn figure out on the pitch leaning on his bat watching one batsman after the other trudge on and off in quick succession. Things could not get much worse!

As was the norm in the lower grades only one umpire was provided by the WACA so the batting side did the square leg duties. Genie was Quairading’s allocated umpire of the moment. All of a sudden there was a loud roar of “Owzats” from the fieldsmen as the batsmen scampered between the wickets attempting a quick single. The stumps were in disarray and a decision was called for from the square leg umpire. Genie’s finger went up in the air and so Twa had no option but to wander off the oval muttering to himself and gesticulating towards his teammate-cum-umpire Genie. He reckoned he wasn’t out!!

Later, much later, that evening as the lads were enjoying themselves drowning their sorrows at the nearest pub, Twa began questioning Genie’s decision.

“I wasn’t out!” Twa argued.

“Were so”! returned Genie.

“Was not”.

“Were so!”

“Was not.”

“Were so!”

“All right then. Why was I out?”

“Because you’re too bloody slow.” came Genie’s reply.

NAIDOC celebrations Written by Cynthia Dann

NAIDOC Week 2020 was celebrated at the school during the week Monday 9th November th to Friday 13 November 2020—and what a fantastic celebration it was.

Monday morning saw the opening of the week with QDHS Principal Pauline Wray welcoming all and inviting Mrs Muriel Collard to deliver a Welcome to Country to the school and community members. Mrs Raelene Taylor spoke on the meaning of NAIDOC and its theme for this year; “Always Was, Always Will Be”. The Aboriginal and the Australian flags were then raised by students Kaeisha Colbung and Adam Cosgrove.

Friday the 13th was the NAIDOC Community Day at the school.

The school and community met at the War Memorial for the Walk of Unity down the main street and then up to the school. A lot of people participated in this. We followed this with another flag raising ceremony and words from Mr Garry Taylor about what NAIDOC means and the history of people in our area.

Community members then enjoyed a delicious morning tea in the Library provided by the school. The Home Ec students had been busy baking and cooking and it was topped off with Quondong Jam and cream on scones, made and shared by Cynthia Dann. The library also housed a brilliant display of art and crafts produced in the classroom through the week and some photos of NAIDOC celebrations from years gone by.

After morning tea we all engaged in activities such as face painting and various rotational activities which included boomerang painting, dance, damper and Quondong tasting. Jasmine Yarran spoke to the students as a positive role model and also made Aboriginal coloured hand and head bands.

A BBQ lunch of sausages and kangaroo meat was served up along with onions, bacon and zucchini served with damper, cooked up by the Haydens and Corey Walsh. Thanks guys!!!

A final closing assembly included Mr Murray Yarran doing a Welcome to Country. Mr Wayne Davies, Quairading Shire President delivered a speech recognizing NAIDOC Week and of going forward.

During the assembly three special presentations were made. The first being a painting of Rowlie Mellor created by Charlie Colbung along with a plaque in recognition of Rowlie’s contribution to the Indigenous Community, the school and the Reconciliation Action Plan was made to Mr David Mellor.

The second presentation of the same was made to Jill Hayes CRC Coordinator to have these placed within the CRC as this was a central meeting place for Rowlie.

And finally a third presentation, a collation of photos was made by the school in recognition and tribute to Mrs Beryl Dick (who passed away earlier this year). Due to Terry Dick being unavailable, this presentation was made to Beryle’s Sister, Beatrice George and Waneisha George on Terry’s behalf.

All who attended absolutely enjoyed the day.

NAIDOC Community Day—Friday 13th November We had a wonderful community celebration day, jam packed with activities for students and their families to participate in. We thank all the parents, family members and Elders who helped with wool braiding, cooking lunch and delicious quondong jam scones, face and boomerang painting. We all enjoyed the lunch kindly cooked by the Noongar families and had an informative and enjoyable assembly with Mr Murray Yarran presenting a Welcome to Country and the meaning of NAIDOC. We also had several students playing the digeridoo with Mr Walsh.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm November was a most accommodating month for gardeners (maybe not for broad acre farmers) in that the temperatures were very mild , apart from two days in the last week, and there was even a little rain to keep the soil hydrated and plants happy and loving the last month of spring. December will start in a similar fashion but we all know that the 38 degree days can’t be too far away. Therefore planning for keeping plants thriving should include the big three - S.I.M. they are Shade, Irrigation and Mulch. Shade in the form of shade cloth, umbrellas or even fabric can lower soil temperatures dramatically which can mean the difference between life and death for a plant. When the temperature at root level goes above 30 degrees the fine feeder roots begin to die and while they may recover by using the plant’s own coping mechanisms if those temperatures are maintained for more than a day or two the plant will die. Irrigation whether by an automatic sprinkler system, or a single sprinkler or by hand watering is a must. Water is the source of life and all plants have some water requirements. Watering by hand is sometimes a bonus because the gardener is able to keep an eye on each plant and give it precisely the amount of water it needs. But this can also be achieved by grouping plants according to their water needs. Mulch helps to protect the soil in the same way that shade does except that mulch also helps to maintain moisture levels in around the root zone, thereby helping the roots stay cool and reducing the amount of water needed to be applied. In fire prone situations mulch can be gravel or blue metal, but perhaps the best form of mulch is soft mulch of either straw or large woodchips. These feed the soil as they break down and while all mulches have some drawbacks, not having any mulch is not option in our conditions.

Harvest – The Mulberries have started the summer feasting of fruit at our place, we still have Lemons, Kumquats and Rhubarb and the last of the Oranges are in the cool room. In the veggie patch the last of the Broad Beans were picked on the day of writing this article, I’m still picking copious amounts of Asparagus, the next crop of Lettuces are ready now, Silver beet is still going strong, garlic is all pulled, onions can be harvested now, our winter tomatoes in the glass house are doing well and the exciting news is that we’ll have Zucchinis in a week’s time.

Things to do – Fertilise and dead head roses, divide and replant crowded clumps of Bearded Iris, this is a good time to buy potted Hippeastrum while they are flowering so you can choose the shade you like, feed Camellias, Azaleas and other acid loving plants, spray water under the leaves of Viburnums, Azaleas and other plants that attract mites by increasing the humidity around these plants it can help reduce the mite numbers, prune all the spring flowering plants like Indian Hawthorn, Lavenders, Viburnums and Banksia Roses, continue thinning the fruit on the stone fruit trees, and now also on apple trees and grape vines, keep the water up to newly planted trees until the first rains of autumn next year, when the Clivias have finished flowering give them some TLC, tidy up any tatty leaves and flower stems divide large clumps and then give them some general purpose fertiliser.

Plant of the Month – Centaurea gymnocarpa, is a member of the Asteraceae family, the large family which includes daisies and cornflower. It has been in my garden for the last ten years or so since I ‘borrowed’ a small cutting from a restaurant garden.

It has not always been in the same place because it has spread itself to different spots but never in an uncontrollable way the volunteer seedlings are easily moved or pulled. It grows to about a metre in height and width, the grey toothed leaves are soft and attractive and the pinky mauve flowers are not scented but are real bee magnets and stand up above the foliage. The flowers floating above the plant help to make it a structural feature in the garden.

Centaurea are extremely drought tolerant and the grey leave help the plant to look cool even on the hottest of days.

It’s time to…

Sow – Beans can be sown in December as they like to grow in warm soil. At Eaglewood Farm we grow Dwarf Stringless and Snake Beans. This month is also a good time to sow Eucalyptus species and other native plants. Second crops of all the summer veggies can be put in now so that you extend your harvest time.

ROWLIE MELLOR… PRESENT As prepared and read by Brendon Simpson at the funeral service for Rowlie Mellor on Friday 6th November 2020 Good morning and hello to family, friends and importantly everyone who has shared many amazing moments with Rowlie Mellor throughout his journey. How iconic and ironic it is that we are gathered here today in the Quairading Town Hall to celebrate Rowlie’s life. From the curtains, the stairs, the outer wings, the stage, the load in doors, the audio pieces through to the ever impressive bio box. This very hall is where Rowlie did some of his best and finest community minded work. The amount of times he has stood in this very spot, behind this very lectern and spoken into this very microphone (which he would have set up and sound checked himself) is countless. I’m sure you will all agree that Rowlie is certainly here and present at this very moment… If you can here me Mr Mellor please make sure the feedback on the mic is kept under control, you have always said I tend to make it go wild!

For those who aren’t aware I am Brendon Simpson and I am sincerely honoured to have been asked by the Mellor family to present today and deliver a community focussed Eulogy on behalf of our amazing town and Rowlie’s much loved home… Quairading. We all know how much this community meant to Rowlie and how much Rowlie meant to the community. He always wore the town colours with pride and left no stone unturned in making the area of 6383 and its surrounds the absolute best it could be.

I wish to title this Community Eulogy “PRESENT”. I have chosen to do this as it has always been a trait that Rowlie has possessed and something that I have always aspired to follow. Rowlie simply oozed PRESENCE. The man was everywhere across this great district of ours. I’m sure everyone can appreciate, with Rowlie having so many different interests, it would have been extremely difficult for him to stretch himself across the board and uphold his genuine involvement. Rowlie not only did this, but it came with interest and he did it with ease. Rowlie was not just there in person but he was PRESENT and certainly more than accounted for. The very simple tongue out the corner of the mouth, a thumbs up, followed by a quick wink as I looked up from a quarter time footy huddle… was all the encouragement I ever needed while coaching at the Quairading Football Club. He did not miss a beat and was right there in the trenches with you. Rowlie supplied this support to so many pockets of our community on a daily basis. Majority of the time not a word was required… he was PRESENT. Rowlie’s involvement with our family is spread over an amazing and very special four generations.

Starting with the Dart family in Cunderdin during the mid 60’s. He taught my Aunty Noelene, my Aunty Maureen and my Mum Barbara during this time at Cunderdin DHS. He was a regular visitor to Addie and Cooper Dart (my Nan and Pop’s) house with other teachers for afternoon tea and the occasional Sunday Roast. He also met Rod Simpson (my Dad) during his time at Cunderdin Agricultural College and witnessed Mum and Dad’s early relationship blossom. He often spoke of these times in Cunderdin and explained how he cherished the memories. It was evident even back in these times, Rowlie’s flair for entertaining his students and friends came to the fore. He would be forever running students to sporting events, church and discos. Even bus trips to Perth with Warburton kids so they could experience the Wanneroo markets with Nan and Pop was not out of the question.

Rowlie moved around the state teaching through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s ranging from Boddington, Cunderdin, Coonana, Norseman, Tardan, Warburton Ranges, Mount Lawley and Sutherland Schools before settling in Quairading. During this period Rowlie maintained close contact with the Dart and Simpson families. Then with his settlement to Quairading he was able to pick up where he left off with us all again. He became a working colleague to many more family members in the Education Department. While many of us were lucky enough to be have been taught and mentored by him.

Rowlie arrived in Quairading at the beginning of 1995 where he assumed the position of School Principal, the position he held until retiring at the conclusion of 2001. His deputies included Ian Oates, Margaret Sermon, Rosalba Butterworth, Tim Sewell, Deidre Edwards and Pauline Wray. His tenure at QDHS also included him mentoring many different staff members. Everyone who worked under Rowlie got to encounter his life experiences, knowledge and values. He had a unique way of passing said attributes onto all colleagues.

As Principal he had an unwavering commitment to student engagement. His enthusiasm to the school community itself had an immediate impact. His leadership was infectious and the school flourished under his guidance. Rowlie always showed genuine pride towards all school achievements. In particular his students. He always encouraged and made the impossible feel possible. He had a sincere way of making you feel empowered to take on and embrace any new challenge. Some key areas that Rowlie loved to promote at the school for everyone to enjoy were the arts, theatre, sports, public speaking and ANZAC celebrations.

Upon retirement Rowlie maintained his involvement with the school and was always there to lend assistance. He could always be found helping out with excursions, carnivals, events and bus driving. Rowlie had an enormous amount of energy and this energy always seemed to grow when it came to further assisting the up and coming members of our community.

A massive example of Rowlie’s extended passion for the school came in 2013. When he headed the Centenary committee. The time and sacrifice that Rowlie put into making those very celebrations what they were was inspiring for all involved. He even took to social media (which he wasn’t too keen on) to make sure he didn’t miss a beat. The Centenary Event was fantastic and something that not only our schooling history should be proud of, but so should Rowlie himself. An amazing display of leadership and organisational skills.

The Quairading District High School is forever indebted and highly grateful to Rowlie for all his heartfelt contributions. Everyone involved thanks him for the stellar job he always did. His genuine determination and commitment was second to none. Rowlie you influenced so many of us that graced those very grounds!

In 2009 Rowlie was nominated by the Curtain Raisers and the RSL Club for the Quairading Citizen of The Year. On Australia Day 2010 Rowlie was presented with the prestigious award. The Award recognised the outstanding level of commitment that Rowlie devoted to so many organisations and clubs within our community over a long period of time. It also highlighted the passion and love that Rowlie had for all things Quairading.

Rowlie was also a longstanding Friend of Rotary and provided tremendous support to the Quairading Rotary Club and the broader Rotary International Organisation, through his passion and enthusiasm for the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. This saw many International Students live within our community and attend QDHS. As School Principal he always welcomed and mentored the “Exchangees” during their time in Quairading. Rowlie also supported the “Outward Bound” Students who had the life changing experience of living in another Country for their Exchange Year.

He was a Foundation Member of the Quairading Reconciliation Action Plan Committee which was formed in 2012 to develop the RAP for all of our Community to benefit from. In particular to better recognise Noongar Culture and understanding within our community. With his vast educational experience across the State he was highly respected and therefore a valued member of the inaugural Quairading RAP Committee.

The RSL is another group where Rowlie would be of assistance. He has provided continuous help towards the local Sub Branch. Rowlie has often helped with the running of ANZAC and Remembrance Day Ceremonies. He made an outstanding Master of Ceremonies when regular members weren’t available. “Patriotic’ is the best term to describe Rowlie’s outlook to the RSL and these areas.

Rowlie was already an established thespian by the time he involved himself with Quairading Curtain Raisers theatre group. He had produced several school musicals for QDHS during his time as Principal. In a previous life, as Rowlie would recall, he had also been in an amateur drama group in Cunderdin. Although we knew of Rowlie’s exploits at the Quairading school his Cunderdin skills were unknown by us until much later, when he displayed his talents on our stage.

Rowlie first came to help in 2000 for the production of Annie Get Your Gun and provided great assistance backstage throughout rehearsals and production nights. We were already benefitting from Rowlie’s encouragement as students from the school were involved in the play. By 2003 Rowlie had been elected treasurer of Curtain Raisers. A position he held until earlier this year when regretfully his resignation was accepted so he could concentrate on his health. As with all committees he was part of, Rowlie wasn’t just there to make up the numbers. He had a strong intent to make the group more professional on and off the stage. Rowlie saw a need to promote the arts in our local school and was instrumental in setting up a scholarship to provide a student from Quairading with the opportunity to further their tuition in music and the arts. First awarded in 2002 this scholarship is still presented every year at the QDHS awards day. Rowlie was always excited to know who the recipient was each year and would follow up with the winner and their family.

In 2003 Rowlie, not just content with being behind the curtains, accepted a small role in the production Mystery On The Orient Express and from then on he was an integral part of everything that Curtain Raisers produced.

Rowlie liked to document a timeline of our activities including photographs of all shows, an honour board recording donations to our community and encouraged anyone to have a go in upcoming shows. He is one of those members to a community group that is ‘gold’. Always ahead of the game. Even during the many weeks of rehearsals Rowlie was always first to arrive and last to leave, with the urn always hot for half time drinks. As quoted by Shakespeare (will do my best here): “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women, merely players; they have their exits and entrances and one man in his time plays many parts” The Quairading Ladies Hockey Club considered Rowlie as their number one ticket holder for many years. It was extremely rare to not see Rowlie at their games both home or away. He would be there come rain, hale or shine with his deck chair and Fremantle hat. His sideline support and appreciation was remarkable and often left players blown away with his positive approach and encouragement. He would always follow up on injuries and awards well into the coming week.

Just to make sure he was a full bottle before the next fixture. It was quite common for Rowlie to choose watching the Quairading Hockey girls over his beloved Dockers.

Rowlie also applied his rich vein of community sporting support to the likes of Football, Netball and importantly PCYC. He was always found on a summer Thursday afternoon refereeing the local junior basketball competition… game after game.

During his time teaching through out the Goldfields in the mid to late 80’s, Rowlie joined the Boulder City Tigers Football Club where he enjoyed many memorable moments. From premierships, cabarets, mock weddings through to being the Club Secretary… Rowlie loved every moment. He was well respected by all players, administrators, officials and members of Boulder.

Rowlie was a passionate supporter of sustainable agriculture and the natural environment. He was vital in encouraging the younger generations to be educated with our local ecosystems.

Aspects such as the nature reserve and the importance of protecting our local ecological resources a high priority. Rowlie was the first to volunteer for community tree planting and always encouraged the school kids to be involved in this process. A classic example of this would be at the Quairading Agricultural Show, where he would engage the youth with interactive land care activities.

He was an active member of the Friends of the Quairading Community Nature Reserve for over 15 years, holding many office bearing positions. He was an integral part of developing the Reserve and making it accessible to everyone, this included the construction of the walk trails. Rowlie volunteered his time and knowledge to hold walking tours in the Reserve every week during Spring and as such had a wealth of knowledge for the Reserve, it’s flora and fauna.

Rowlie was an active member of the LCDC for over 20 years. Again holding many office bearing positions during this time. His passions continued in the area of sustainable agricultural practices and again encouraged the younger generation farmers to continue the group’s work. Rowlie was a huge supporter of the Red Card for Rabbits and Foxes community shoot events which has run for over 10 years. While supporting the event, Rowlie would cook the morning breakfast BBQ at the conclusion of each shoot.

The formation of the Quairading Seniors Group took place in October of 2008. The name of group to use the acronym QARRAS – Quairading aged retired residents and seniors was suggested by Rowlie. It came in reference to our local ties with the marsupial the Kwarra. Rowlie became a committee member from inauguration through to September 2020. The introduction of an annual quiz day, with the seniors from neighbouring towns was so successful and well attended it became an annual event on the QARRAS program. Of course Rowlie was the ever professional “Quiz Master”. He organised and entertained all visitors as well as distributing Fantales for any interesting answers. Rowlie was always early on meeting days to help set up and the last to leave… but as many are aware he always left plenty of time to go to the “Library”.

Rowlie is a personal friend of Ian McNamara, the host of the popular Sunday Morning ABC radio show Australia All Over. Rowlie was often heard conversing with Macca while live on air. Majority of the time their discussions were centered around the promotion and growth of the Quairading community. As always Rowlie was positively putting the spotlight on our great town. He certainly waited all week for Macca on a Sunday morning.

Football… what more can I say, Rowlie loved it - but many of us may not have shared his taste in the teams he supported. Rowlie was an avid follower of the Claremont Tigers within the WAFL. He would often speak of yester year stories reflecting on past successes and great players from the Tigers. A major contributor to the Claremont Football Club was Gerard Neesham and someone that Rowlie loved to admire. Not only for his football attributes but also for his involvement with the Clontarf School and Academy. They well and truly shared sincere interests for our Indigenous Community.

With Gerard being the Inaugural Head Coach of Fremantle Dockers, so to came Rowlie’s dedication to the Fremantle Football Club. He was a devoted member for quite some years, always promoting the Dockers and their Purple Army! He could often be found driving to Perth to watch games. This was not always on his own… sometimes with a bus load of kids bound for Subiaco oval. A highlight of Rowlie’s support was attending the 2013 AFL Grandfinal at the MCG when he won the annual Rotary Raffle. Although the Dockers lost the game by 15 points to Hawthorn. Rowlie thoroughly loved the experience.

At the beginning of my speech I titled this Eulogy PRESENT, this was to represent how much Rowlie was loyal and PRESENT within our community. I’m sure you will agree that the previous examples of Rowlie’s adventures throughout Quairading have highlighted how this gentleman has been passionately PRESENT for so many years. The ironic nature of the term PRESENT is its analogy and an English Class reference that I think Rowlie will appreciate… He was an absolute GIFT to our community. Rowlie was an absolute PRESENT to Quairading.

In conclusion I would like to thank everyone for their time while I have taken us on a walk down Rowlie’s local lane. To all family and friends I hope you have enjoyed reflecting on Rowlie’s amazing contribution to Quairading and its Districts. Mr Mellor we all take off our hats, salute and say a tremendous thankyou for everything you have done for us. Rest in peace my friend.

15 Summer School Holiday activities that won't break the bank!

1. Water Play: While hitting a backyard with the hose or a sprinkler is great fun, even a small water play table set up on a balcony will keep kids entertained and cool in the summer holidays. Buckets, tubs, cups, colanders, water balloons, ice and sponges make great props.

Remember to always supervise kids around water. Water is of course a precious resource so maybe coincide with your watering days or washing the car on the lawn etc.

2. Explore your local bushland: The Quairading Nature Reserve is teeming with flora and fauna, ripe for exploring, remember to be sun and snake smart!

3. Backyard Camping: You don’t need to travel far from home to have an adventure. Setting up camp and spending the night in your own backyard will introduce you to a whole new world, just outside the back door! Brave the summer bugs and get camping! (or if you’re not quite brave enough...inside cubby camp?) If you are camping outside, why not take advantage of our amazing clear night skies and do some star gazing! Pop on a star themed playlist ie; 1. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star (I mean, really, doesn’t this have to top the list?)

4. Cooking in the kitchen: Get ready to make a little mess! Set up some batch baking activities and cook the day away, making snacks and treats to get you through the holidays.

5. Plant a veggie or flower garden: From researching the right plants for your garden, to sourcing seeds and seedlings preparing the soil, this is an ongoing activity where the kids can keep checking the progress of their plants, hunt for caterpillars and other bugs, water and feed, even keep a diary with their findings. Not only is it pretty cheap it can be delicious too! Check out Quairading Garden and Gifts, Quairading Agri Services and Farmarama for supplies, you can also swap and share cuttings with neighbours or grow from kitchen scraps!

6. Film a reality show: Got a budding dance star, or inventor, or maybe a mini MasterChef? Why not use a phone or tablet to create your own reality television show? From scripting, to set design, filming and editing, this is a super fun activity you can keep adding to over the whole holiday break.

7. Visit your local library: Exploring the Quairading Book Post Library is a perfect all weather activity. Load up on books to read together and you’ve covered off more than one day’s worth of entertainment in one hit!

8. Have a play date: Inviting a friend over to spend some time with and make long-lasting memories is a sweet way to entertain the days in the school holidays. Mix things up by inviting someone who hasn’t been for a playdate at your house before!

9. Get crafty: Try making your own slime, playdough or face paint at home with everyday ingredients you’ll likely find in the kitchen cupboard. There is a plethora of recipes online.

10. Dress ups: You don’t need to spend a lot on fancy dress. Letting the kids go wild in mum and dad’s wardrobe is often enough to set off a whole raft of adventurous imaginative play. Set up a stage under the clothes lines and put on a summer show for the neighbours. You could hit up Betty’s Op Shop and the CWA Op Shop and experiment with designing and altering your own fashion pieces!

11. Interview an older relative about what life was like when they were young.

12. Have an outdoor painting party, kids paint is cheap as chips and they can paint on large cardboard ‘canvases’, even an evening painting class. Sometimes even a bucket of water is enough to “paint” with!

13. Draw a chalk mural on a footpath.

14. Collect rocks on a nature walk and then paint them.

15. Visit a near by town or attraction.

You could of course combine many of these ideas; have a whole star gazing themed party and spread these activities over the week leading up. You can always use a theme more suited to your child’s interests...but who doesn’t love the night skies!    

ANSWERS 1. Sunfish The sunfish is the largest and heaviest fish that is not made of cartilage. Its scientific name is mola mola, which gave the sunfish its nickname. It weighs around 1,000 kg! If you guessed the rear end of the mole, the rest of the quiz is not going to go well.

2. A frozen Frog Pogonip refers to an icy, dangerous fog, especially in the valleys in the Rocky Mountains. According to a Native American tradition, popgnip can damage your lungs. It really can, so stay away from pogonip if you see any! If you guessed mountain road, at least you were on the right track!

3. A seat on an elephant A howdah is a (usually ornate) seat on the back of an elephant. It is used in India and Southeast Asia. It may also be placed on the back of a camel. It normally has a roof and is only used by royalty or nobility.

4. Glossary I bet you were wondering, "It can't be that easy!"

Glossary is essentially a shortened version. An alternate definition is the upper lip of a mosquito. I am not sure how those two are related.

5. Similar to a rabbit’s foot The part of the word that was a real hint was "pod", which refers to a foot in Latin. That should have narrowed it to smelly and rabbit-like. If you guessed smelly, good try! The word can usually mean feet covered with fur, like a wolf or a ptarmigan.

6. An experiment in your thoughts Albert Einstein was one of the first to pioneer the use of this word (Merriam-Webster). He carried out many gedankenexperiments in his lifetime! These usually happen before an actual experiment. Try saying this word ten times fast.

7. Soil tiller This is the longest normal palindrome in the English language. Surprisingly, its definition is expected by most. Some have asked why we just don't take out the "va" and say "rotator". I have no idea. A soil tiller can be found at most hardware stores, but it will not be advertised as this word.

8. Using a microscope with an electric light to take a picture This is a long definition. This word is actually relatively self-explanatory. It is useful when one wants to take a picture of an extremely small thing.

Although the other definitions had something to do with the words (except for one), the correct answer put everything together. We are almost done!

9. A synonym for beautiful This word comes from the Latin root "pulcher" which translates to "beautiful". If you are a man, you are free to use this word in complimenting your wife/ girlfriend. Although they may not get it, you will impress them with your breadth of knowledge. As an aside, a monk's robe is sometimes called a "habit", and the quality of being fat has several words associated with it such as "corpulent".

10. A fly from Thailand This word is the longest acceptable binomial word in the systematic naming of animals. The fly in question is not very powerful or special. A word for the inflammation of the ear is Otitis media, and I don't know any special word for an African honeybee.

Dads and Father Figures – Are We Selling Ourselves Short?

Modern society can at times, undervalue the role of the father in our children’s lives. We tend to sell ourselves short, and the risk is that we are seen as nothing much more than sperm donors in the process of parenting.

We’re far more than just a second parent in the household. No other person is as likely to bring the positive outcomes that an involved dad can. Our parenting style is significantly different to the mother’s, not to mention the male role modelling that is so important to both our sons’ and daughters’ development.

This is not saying that one parent is better than the other, in fact what is obvious is that both parenting styles are the Yin and Yang of child development and balance each other out. Whilst these are generalisations, the research backs it up. Where mums tend to preach equity, which creates a sense of security, dads model and encourage competition which helps develop independence. Dads quite often stress rules, fairness and justice which develops the child’s objectivity and sense of what’s right or wrong.

While mothers are the primary source of sympathy and caregiving, dads are often a driver of empathy, or the ability for the child to see the world through someone else’s eyes.

This might be because fathers tend to see the child in relation to the world vs the mothers view of the world in relation to the child.

Dads will show their love for their children in riskier ways and this is important. Letting them push on to the deep end of the pool (whilst we’re still watching) encourages confidence, independence and safe risk taking. Rough and tumble play is also an imperative part of socialisation, which children need to develop between the ages of two and four. They learn what hurts and what doesn’t. They learn that stretching, wrestling, pushing and pulling can be done in a friendly and “knockabout” manner, which is as important as learning that a thumb to the

eyeball or a kick to the groin will never be taken as friendly.

The father’s physical play also helps to socialise the child with regards to reading situations and understanding mood. A child who hasn’t learnt to pick up and respond to these cues will find themselves struggling to create, maintain or to move in various friendship circles and may find themselves an outcast or victim of bullying in later years.

Whether we are encouraging our children to take life on by the horns (through safe risktaking); honing their moral compass (through setting out rules and expectations); or just providing a role model of what a good man should be (for our sons to emulate and so our daughters have a yard-stick to measure future relationships by) we have an invaluable and ever changing part to play in our children’s lives.

HOW TO MAKE STRETCHY SLIME Ingredients:  1/4 cup clear PVC school glue  Water  1/4 teaspoon Borax  Liquid food colouring  Glitter or any other add-ins you wish to mix through 1.

Mix glue and 45mls of water in one disposable cup.

In another cup, mix Borax and ¼ cup of water until the Borax is completely dissolved.

Transfer the glue mix to a large bowl, adding in a drop or two of food colouring and your glitter if you’re using it.

Slowly add your Borax mix to the bowl, it will immediately begin to react with glue mix and come together. Mix well for 30 seconds or so, using a skewer or Paddle Pop stick then you can begin to stretch and blend it with your hands.

Hot tip #1: Borax is not that nice so make sure your kids avoid touching their face and mouth while playing with slime, and always wash their hands thoroughly after every slime session.

HOW TO MAKE FLUFFY SLIME Ingredients:  1/3 cup clear PVC school glue  Food colouring  3-4 cups shaving cream  1 tablespoon saline solution  1/4 teaspoon baking soda  Baby oil (optional) 1.

Add glue and food colouring into a large bowl and combine using a skewer or Paddle Pop stick.

Add the shaving cream and mix well.

Next, mix in the saline solution and baking soda, mix thoroughly and knead the mixture until it gives you a fluffy slime consistency.

If your slime is too sticky, adding a drop or two of baby oil will fix that.

Hot tip #2: Food colouring may make your slime look fun and bright, but it can also stain, so make sure to keep any coloured slime away from surfaces such as carpet, good clothes or upholstery.

HOW TO MAKE BORAX-FREE SLIME Ingredients:  400g tin of condensed milk  1 tablespoon cornflour  Food colouring 1.

Mix the condensed milk and cornflour together in a saucepan over low heat.

Continually stir the mixture over a low heat until it thickens to a slime consistency.

Stir in a couple of drops of food colouring and allow to cool completely.

When you are finished playing with this safer, edible slime, store it in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Hot tip #3: Borax is a naturally-occurring mineral but it may still cause irritation in some people.

There have also been reports that it has caused burns in children, so if you are concerned, it’s best to stick with the Borax-free recipes.

Uniting Church Coraling Street We have reached the end of the church year in Mathew. We have followed from the birth of Jesus to God announcing who he was, we have had stories of what He was about, of His call to follow Him. This month we have looked at the time of judgement when He comes again. The story of the 10 Virgins reminds us that we need to be watchful and prepared, the second story tells how we need to use the talents we have given to us or we may miss out. The third story is the final judgement the parting of the Sheep and Goats. The only way to know is when the king who appears to be Jesus divides them. This is a scary thought. I believe that it is those who have accepted Jesus and follows Him is the parting line. So where do we stand?
