Mad dash, home straight, final sprint; whatever you want to call it, we’re there and the end of another year is in sight. Of course it’s gone too quick, but I think as a community we’ve done pretty dang well at packing a whole heap into the past twelve months. Ticking over the list is exhausting to think about for a second, but I think gives me motivation to smash out even more in the next twelve! What’s that saying about never being satisfied? Here at the Quairading CRC we’re in reporting and planning mode. Reflecting on what went well this year, telling our funding bodies what a great job we’ve done at investing their money in our community and making sure the mistakes learning experiences made are documented, so that we make sure that we do in fact learn from them. We’re also pumping out event plans and funding applications to make sure the wheel keeps turning, whilst we take some hard earned time off during January. We’ve recently run a short and sweet Food Sensations program with Elouise Hawkins from WA Country Health, which culminates in a Supermarket Tour on Tuesday 4th December. While the first two sessions were held at the QDHS Home Ec Room (thank you QDHS!!) this last session is a real out-in-the-wilderness, interactive, onsite session at the Quairading Co-op. Speaking of the Co-op, get yourself down there this Saturday and lend a hand at the Busy Bee! The Co-op staff and board have been hard at work with constant plans for improvement over recent months (years, really!) and they’re at the point now where a little extra elbow grease is required. There’s even talk of cold refreshments afterwards. Hello rubber elbow. See you there. Enjoy the read—I do hope you get the chance to get through all the content we’ve published this month. VISITING MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS – JANUARY 2019 Monday 10 January Carol Deppe, Clinical Psychologist ACWY MENINGOCOCCAL VACCINE PROGRAM EXTENDED The McGowan Government has announced it will extend the State-funded meningococcal ACWY vaccine program for another year. This program is for children aged one to four years to ensure that more children receive this life-saving protection. The State-funded program will also be extended to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged six weeks. For more information about the Childhood MenACWY Catchup Vaccination Program visit http;://healthywa.wa.gov.au Additional charges attached to both Bulk Billing and Private fees for ALL patients. Either Private or Bulk Billing Fees apply when you attend for a consultation. Consumables are items we must purchase for use during a patient’s consultation and this cost must be covered by the patient with or without a Commonwealth concession card and is payable at time of consult. The cost of the consumable to private patients will be billed as a separate item at the time of your consult as it is not covered by Medicare or private health fund. Examples of consumables which attract a separate fee for ALL patients include, but not limited to; Ear irrigation (ear syringe) $10.00 Spirometry (testing of lung capacity) $5.00 Pregnancy testing (including Lady Doctor Visits) $10.00 Removal of Foreign Body from eye (using Algerbrush burr) $15.00 INR (Testing Warfarin levels) $5.00 Liquid Nitrogen $10.00 first visit, $5.00 subsequent visit for same lesion APPOINTMENT TIME REMINDER: Patients are seen according to their diary appointment time, not by time of arrival.
TIME TO RETIRE I would like to take this opportunity to wish Sam Brown all the best as she commences her role as Practice Manager. I also want to thank the Shire Staff and Councillors for their assistance during my decade plus as Practice Manager. In particular, I would like to thank CEO Graeme Fardon whose consistent back-up and support which helped me complete my role to the best of my ability Our community is very lucky to have a proactive Shire which has ensured continuous medical coverage for both the Practice and the Hospital. To my Team, THANK YOU just isn’t enough. It is impossible to explain to anyone who has not worked here, just how much pressure is on the Medical Team to multi-task half a dozen critical items at any given time whilst triaging patients and looking calm so as not to cause concern to our patients and allow a positive work-flow. A fabulous Team who supported my role and helped implement improvements to better manage our Practice. To our GPs, and over the years I have worked with 21, thank you for the tireless efforts and unending care and support offered to our patients. We are a dedicated Team with our patients’ health foremost in everything we do. To our Patients, thank you for understanding when times are busy. SHIRE OF QUAIRADING ADOPTION OF LOCAL LAW PEST PLANTS AMENDMENT LOCAL LAW 2018 The Shire of Quairading has made a local law relating to Pest Plants. The purpose of the proposed Pest Plants Amendment Local Law 2018 is to prescribe pest plants within the district. The effect of the proposed Pest Plants Amendment Local Law 2018 is that owners and occupiers of land within the district are to comply with the provisions in this local law. A copy of the law may be inspected at or obtained from Shire of Quairading Administration Office, 10 Jennaberring Road, Quairading, between the hours of 8.30am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. QUAIRADING YOUTH CENTRE A big thank you to the Quairading Bowling Club for hosting bowls for the Youth Centre. We thank you for the opportunity of screening in your town. As you can see from the results 18 people were referred for further investigation. This number is slightly higher than what we usually experience and reinforces the need to be able to continue to take our service to the rural communities. Our screening program is funded by Lions Clubs, business and public donations and, as always, we are looking for opportunities to be able to fund our program. This year we have obtained a Grower Number with CBH which allows grain growers to donate a portion of their crop’s returns to the Institute. That # is 40437089. Loose Stitches Well here we are at the pointy end of the year! We have had another really busy month with 2 visiting teachers coming up over Greenmount to share their knowledge with us. Our thanks to them for making the trek and a very special thanks to our loyal customers for continuing to support and encourage us. By the time you read this we would have been and come back from our annual fact finding, networking and buying trip to Melbourne at the Australian Quilt Market. We will have many great ideas and projects for next year.

So far, the community has raised $39,550 of the $65,000 we require (we are hoping a Council contribution will take this to $49,550!). There is still time to pledge some funds to this project- any contribution is appreciated and encouraged (Quairading Rainmakers Inc BSB: 036-172 141-277). We want to take this opportunity to remind the community of El Toro’s symbolism- a bull is symbolic of fertility, determination, strength and prosperity. The sculpture has rejuvenated old

o far we have held two Food Sensations workshops, these have been attended by a small group in the comfort of the Quairading District High School’s Home Economics classroom. The Food Sensations Program is completely free and is being delivered by our Wheatbelt Health Promotion Officer, Elouise Hawkins. The workshops have been a refreshing reiteration of what we probably should already know. That is, we should be eating a colourful REAL whole foods diet, with minimal processed ingredients. If it comes in a colourful package and doesn’t require any preparation, it’s likely that food is a ‘treat’ that should only be consumed occasionally.

Beware though, sugar has many aliases, a few common ones are sucrose, highfructose corn syrup, dextrose and maltose. NANNA’S CURRY Recipes courtesy of the complimentary FOODBANK ® recipe book given to all Food Sensations participants. The male constituents of our second Food Sensations session whipped up this curry for us in less than 30 minutes while we ladies prepared the nearly guilt free dessert. It was delicious, easy and didn't contain any obscure ingredients. It would be super simple to switch in and bulk out this recipe with seasonal vegetables based on your personal preferences and the same can be said for the fruits in the dessert. We added some unprocessed local honey to the yoghurt as well.
INGREDIENTS
1 brown onion Oil 500g lean meat (beef, lamb, pork, kangaroo) 1 tablespoon curry powder 1 green apple 1 carrot 1 capsicum ½ sweet potato 2 cups water 1 tablespoon salt-reduced beef stock powder 1 tablespoon shredded coconut 1 tablespoon apricot jam 1 tablespoon pickles 2 tablespoons cornflour
METHOD Step 1: Dice onion. Turn frypan onto medium heat and spray with oil. Add onion to frypan, cook until softened. Step 2: Dice meat into small pieces (or buy ready diced). Add meat and curry powder to frypan and cook until meat is brown. Step 3: On a clean chopping board, dice apple, carrot, capsicum and sweet potato into small pieces, add to frypan. Step 4: Add water, stock powder, coconut, jam and pickles. Stir to combine. Cook for 10 minutes. Step 5: Mix cornflour and 2 tablespoons of water in small bowl. Add to frypan and stir for 5 minutes or until sauce thickens. Serve with rice.
PAVLOVA MESS INGREDIENTS 1 cup fresh or frozen berries, defrosted 1 cup natural or Greek yoghurt 1 250g punnet strawberries, sliced 3 kiwifruit and/or bananas, peeled and sliced 6 meringue nests 1 170 g can passionfruit METHOD Step 1: Place berries and yoghurt in a large bowl. Mash together with a fork until smooth. Step 2: Crush meringues with your hands in a large bowl. Place 1 tablespoon of crushed meringue in each cup Step 3: Add 1/2 cup of yoghurt mixture, followed by a layer of fruit to each cup. Step 4: Spoon 1 tablespoon passionfruit and remaining meringue on top *Internet images of the recipes due to our devouring them before a photo could be snapped. Sorry not sorry.

GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk
W
ell we certainly have had a taste of what lies ahead this summer with our first heat wave for the year. Fortunately for our gardens the following week brought some relief from the hot and humid weather. Some of you may have been lucky enough to have had a little shower of rain over those hot days which may have made conditions just bearable. However, the humidity is not always welcome because it does cause an increase in fungal diseases in both vegetables and ornamentals. Treating fungal diseases depends on the severity of the condition. To prevent black spot on roses and mildew on the cucurbit family spray with a mixture of 1 tsp of Bi-Carb Soda, 1 tsp of dishwashing liquid in 2 litres of water, this spray changes the PH of the surface of the leaves and prevents the fungus taking hold. In minimal cases just removing the affected leaves is enough, or spraying the leaves with a 10% solution of water and full cream milk and finally in the most severe cases there are a variety of commercial products available. Plant of the Month: It was a difficult choice this month because of course spring has many beautiful flowering plants to choose from. In the end I chose the most accommodating Pennisetum Purple Fountain Grass. It has long strappy arching burgundy foliage and feathery seed heads. Its seeds are sterile so there is no danger of it becoming a weed problem as the old style of this grass used to be. It is very drought tolerant and looks great in small or large gardens. There is also a green version of this plant which is also worth consideration. At Eaglewood Farm I have these growing both in the Mediterranean garden and in front of the north facing sliding doors of the front of our house. In the garden they are allowed to grow to their full potential which is about 1.5 x 1.5 metres, in mid winter they are simply cut down to ground level and by mid November they are looking beautiful again. At the front of the house they only have a small space to grow in and are there to do the job of keeping the glass cool in March when the sun starts
hitting the bottom of these windows again. They do this job very well indeed. Here they are cut back a little later but still in winter and their root mass is also reduced at this time which of course means new plants to give away or plant elsewhere. All in all a very handy plant, I love it! It’s time to …… Plant: more lettuces, tomatoes and other summer veggies; tropical trees are best planted now but only if you can keep the water up to them. Sow: the second crop of corn and zucchini can be put in now summer bean crops can also be put in during December. Harvest: we are still gorging on strawberries, white mulberries, asparagus and babacoes. The first of the corn, zucchinis, gherkins, borlotti beans and cucumbers will start in early December and I wonder if you will be picking tomatoes for a Christmas day salad? This is the first of the stone fruit months, early cherries, apricots, and white peaches have started ripening here by mid December. The abundance of the summer fruits is about to start towards the end of December when plums, nectarines and peacherines and yellow peaches begin. Things to do: watering is the most important job in the garden during our summer months. It is crucial to the survival and success of our gardens. It is a good time to take cuttings from camellias, succulents and cacti. ast month’s subject was the colour “yellow”. This allowed us to take photos of any subject but we had to get a yellow coloured item into our competition pic. I got first place yet again but had to share bragging rights with Geoff Hall as we both got the same amount of votes. Geoff’s equal winning first place pic was taken with a mobile phone so I will repeat myself again and tell you that if you don’t have a camera you can still join our club and use a mobile phone to take your pics.

We have promoted our calendar for sale in previous years but this year we have realised that everybody knows that they are available at this time of year and this gave us more time to compile our calendar and we didn’t have the calendar ready for sale on Quairading Show Day. We have made a theme for the calendar this year and it is Quairading in the past and as it is now in the present. Talking about present, make sure you give one away at Christmas time especially to someone overseas. We only have 300 printed at the moment, we can print of more if we get enough demand, but don’t count on it. You best get a calendar straight away, as it is highly likely they will like last year, all sell out!

WA'S COUNTRY AMBULANCE SERVICE DRAFT STRATEGY
I
n 2016 the WA Country Health Service Board endorsed the need for the development of a future driven strategy to ensure the Country Ambulance Service meets the needs of regional communities. The draft Country Ambulance Strategy is the result of consultation with key stakeholders who use and run ambulance services in country communities and recognises the tremendous and valuable commitment of WA’s ambulance volunteers in providing an ambulance response in more regional and remote locations in WA than in any other State. The draft Strategy makes a range of recommendations including increasing investment in community paramedics, improvements to communications and technology, volunteer support and improving consistency of dispatch times. A major recommendation is the implementation of a policy framework to set a foundation for the future and ensure consistent standards across all communities.

It’s nearly time for the Christmas Holidays but there’s no sign of slowing down at the Centre. We’ve been having great numbers with us almost reaching full capacity on Wednesdays! We’ve also welcomed some new children to the Centre the past couple of months which is great to see. The past month we have focused on ‘Under the Sea’ as the children love the song ‘Baby Shark’. The children have made some colourful creations to decorate our room and help develop their fine motor skills. As part of our ‘Under the Sea’ month we also discussed pirates. The children played outside only to realise a pirate had left some clues to where he had hidden some treasure! The children were too clever for him and found a treasure box full of jewels and chocolate coins. We finished the month with Halloween. We had a slime sensory table filled with plastic spiders, bats and cockroaches. The children thought it was really gooey and sticky. It was great to see the other children in the community come and visit us at the Centre for ‘Trick or Treat’ and show us their amazing costumes. Christmas closing dates. Noongar Cultural Corner A monthly article produced in collaboration with local Noongar representatives and Noongar cultural organisations.
Jews and Noongars Seems like an unlikely combination. But yes you read it right. Noongars in Quairading just hosted a three day event inviting the Jewish Community to discuss moving forward and healing pain from a turbulent history. It seems an irony considering on 18th May 2018 people in Melbourne at a rally were chanting to cleanse the Jews from river to sea. The Jewish nation has been the victim of the most hideous antisemitism throughout history. They were able to share with the Noongar Community in Quairading how to rise above pain and to forward themselves past generational hurt, and prosper. With all the blood spilled on the land the Jewish Community stands with the first peoples of the land, to help forward and teach Noongars how to heal. Many meals were had together and tears shed, but if anyone can talk about rising above persecution it’s the Jewish Communities. Approximately 45 Noongars attended this event it was a great turnout. QUAIRADING DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL NEWS November 2018 This term the Kindergarten students have been learning about the people and occupations in the Quairading community. We have visited the Police station where Sergeant Deb Andrews, Senior Sergeant John Hancock and Teke Jasper showed us around the station and the patrol car. We have also visited the Post Office where Peta West showed us where the mail is stamped and sorted. We posted our own letters to ourselves and to Santa. We have taken a tour of the dental van to get us ready for our check-up and finally we visited the Co-op IGA and were taken to the behind the scenes areas. The children experienced the cold fridges and the freezing freezers, had a sit on the forklift and were lucky enough to have a piece of fruit, a lamington and a juice box. The fire truck came to the school where Kath Wilton and Phil Kevill spoke to the students about fire safety. We were able to have a close look at the fire truck and climb on board!!
In Pre-Primary science this term, we have been exploring the different types of weather that we experience here in Quairading. The students have used a weather kit to support them in recording when it rains, describing the temperature and recognising that the weather is always changing. The students have had lots of fun creating thermometers, conducting experiments and recording their findings. This term, the year one class have been working hard learning about persuasive writing, word problems, earth and space and emergencies. We have been very busy with lots of incursions, Halloween dress up day, an excursion to the Gravity Discovery Centre and our assembly!

The year two/three class has been looking into the future. We have discussed many features of our destinies, like what we want to be, what car we may want to drive, where we may live, who will be our friends and how much money we might earn. This made for excellent discussion on the steps and processes involved in achieving their future dreams. I can tell you the future of the year two/three class is looking extremely bright! Look out for the ‘Future of the Year 2/3 Class’ greenscreen on the Facebook page. The year 4 and 5’s looked at new ways to prevent wave erosion because we know that it cannot be stopped. We created realistic scenarios and tested these ways to see how well we could prevent this process. All groups had fantastic ideas which included; natural vegetation, a recycled wall/ fence, a drain that caught most of the water and took it back out to sea, and concrete barriers out at sea to slow down the waves.
The year 5/6 students with their science experiments testing whether or not their earthquake structures will survive an earthquake. The jelly is the unstable earth. In the Secondary School… The high school students are learning about Earth and Space Science this term. They have been doing various investigations on global systems, astronomy, rocks and mineral mining.

The year 7/8 class have been learning all about visual language conventions in English. They have made their own ‘still image story’ and have watched the film Matilda, focusing on the way that audiences are positioned to respond to different characters. In HASS, they have designed their own businesses. In year 9/10 English we have just finished reading the verse novel The Simple Gift. We analysed it after each chapter and wrote an essay. In HASS, we have been generating creative ideas with our 6 Thinking Hats. We recently finished presentations on entrepreneurs who are doing great things in our world today.
LOOSE STITCHES FAN Another report from me about Loose Stitches. I am getting on well but unfortunately did not win the gold medal at the Quairading Agricultural show. I am still doing this HUGE quilt, I need to finish it now preferably before Christmas (although the way I am going it will probably be next Christmas). The ladies are all busy with lots of people now attending and lots of visitors from different towns. The “doll ladies” also come in now and again and you should see their handmade dolls, they are magnificent! Come in and take a look. PAGE 46

YEAR 7/8’S KEP TRACK TREK Written by Scarlett Woodcock
QDHS’s 7/8 class went on a trip into the wilderness in Week 4. It all started on a lovely spring day, the 31st of October 2018. The Year 7/8 class, Mr Curtin, Miss Eastwood and JC (Mr Colbung) were going away for three days. We would drive to Chidlow, set up camp at Lake Leschenaultia and then go on an adventure. We were going to walk a part of the Kep Track. So, Day 1… After the Halloween parade at school, we piled into the bus with our clothes and bags. After the ride down, we all unpacked the trailer and the bus, and got used to our surroundings. There was another school at the site as well, but they weren’t doing the same thing as us. We refilled our water bottles, grabbed our bags and headed off to Mundaring to the Sculpture Park. When we got to the park, we started walking. We walked 3.6 kilometres out into the bush, then turned around and walked 3.6 back to the bus. It was so hot, and sticky. The air was swarming with flies. After all that long, hard walking, we wanted to play on the big flying fox. Even Mr Curtin and Miss Eastwood went on it. That was a lot of fun. The bus took us back to the camp site, and then we went for a swim in the lake and had a game of cricket on the pontoon. After that we had our showers and had dinner. Our camp site was at the edge of the bush, so we played ‘spotlight’ and ‘escape from quarantine’. We probably stayed up a little past our bed times, but it was the best start to a brilliant walk. Day 2. We woke up at about 5:30am. Early birds, I know. At 7am we all went to breakfast. I had vegemite toast. After breakfast we piled back into the bus and drove a few kilometres out of Wundowie (almost halfway between Wundowie and Wooroloo) and we walked 20 kilometres in five and a half hours. We started at 8am on the dot, and walked all the way back to Lake Leschenaultia. That day was the longest day ever!! (33 512 steps). And, after all that walking, some of the kids still wanted to play on the sports equipment at the Chidlow park. There were only three of us that rested our weary legs. Once we got back to camp, we went down to the lake and had another swim. We played a big game of spotlight with the other school that night. It was fun. We went to bed a little bit earlier than the night before, after we toasted marshmallows. Yum. Day 3. The last day. We woke up at 4:30am, packed up the tents and swags, and shoved them all into the bus. Breakfast at 6:30 am, and then set off for the final day. We drove to Wundowie and walked to Bakers Hill (the Bakers Hill Pie Shop). 8km walked in 2 hours. Adam almost ran that 8kms – he was so determined to get the first pie. Sadly enough for Adam, Will beat him to it. Poor Adam ended up getting the third pie. I got the fourth pie. They were really good pies. JC and Miss Eastwood went to get the bus again. We sat on the brick wall and played ‘sweet and sour’. That was also loads of fun. Then we drove back to Quairading. I don’t know how I squeezed 3 days into 600 words. To tell you how much fun it was would be impossible. PAGE 47

COMMUNITY CAR An important notice A recent incident following the use of the Community Car has prompted the Quairading Ladies Hospital Auxiliary to once again clarify the terms of use for the car. When service began around five years ago notices were put in both the Passion Sheet and the Banksia Bulletin on several occasions to advise our townsfolk that the car was now available. It was for the use of clients who could not drive themselves to hospital appointments in Perth or elsewhere and had no Personal Carer or family member to drive them. This has been largely adhered to by the clients who have appreciated the use of the vehicle and respected our wonderful band of volunteer drivers. It should be pointed out that if the client booking the car needs a carer to stay with them during their appointments then they have to arrange for a carer to travel with them. The volunteer driver is NOT a carer. His/her role is to transport the patient to the place of the appointment, see them through check-in, then transport them home at the end of the appointment. Parking at most of the major hospitals is a huge problem, not to mention expensive, and as ALL paid parking has to be paid by the patient this often necessitates the driver trying to find somewhere to park off the hospital grounds that is free in order to minimise the cost to the patient. The hundreds of clients who have been transported over the years have been grateful for this consideration. In order to make appropriate parking decisions it is helpful for the volunteer driver to know how long the appointment will take, so when booking the car please advise if the trip involves a procedure or just a consultation. If it is a procedure please check approximately how long the driver will have to wait. Driving on country roads in the dark is hazardous and to minimise the risk it would be appreciated if city appointments could be arranged between the hours of 9:30am and 1pm. We have found that most hospitals and private medical centres are happy to cooperate with us on this issue knowing how far we have to travel to meet the appointment. Finally, remember that the government PATS subsidy is still available which currently refunds approximately 75% of the cost of a trip to Perth in the Community Car. PATS forms can be picked up from the Medical Practice or Quairading Hospital. Thank you for keeping the above in mind. The Community Car provides an exceptional service for those most in need and we hope it can continue for many years to come. We need everybody’s help to ensure this will happen. Thanks also to our fantastic volunteer drivers who all do a great job and who always have the best interests of the patient in mind. Without them the service would not exist. Five reasons why being kind makes you feel good – according to science 1. Contagious smiling Being kind is likely to make someone smile and if you see that smile for yourself, it might be catchy. A key theory about how we understand other people in neuroscience suggests that seeing someone else show an emotion automatically activates the same areas of the brain as if we experienced that emotion for ourselves.

verybody can appreciate acts of kindness. But when it comes to explaining why we do them, people often take one of two extreme positions. Some think kindness is something completely selfless that we do out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we cunningly use to become more popular and reap the benefits. But research shows that being kind to others can actually make us genuinely happy in a number of different ways. We know that deciding to be generous or cooperating with othersactivates an area of the brain called the striatum. Interestingly, this area responds to things we find rewarding, such as nice food and even addictive drugs. The feel-good emotion from helping has been termed “warm glow” and the activity we see in the striatum is the likely biological basis of that feeling.
You may have been in a situation where you find yourself laughing just because someone else is – why not set off that chain of good feelings with a nice surprise for someone?

The same mechanism also makes us empathise with others when they are feeling negative, which could make us feel down. A Visit from our Bishop On Sunday 28th October St Faith’s Anglican Church’s congregation and friends were fortunate to have visit from our Bishop Jeremy James. It was especially wonderful because we had 4 students being Confirmed and 2 students taking their First Communion. The students had been preparing for this day for over 6 weeks and it is a credit to them and their parents for the effort they put into their work over that time. The service was followed by a bring and share lunch with lots of great fellowship and reminiscing for all.
Children’s Christmas Service Come along to St Faith’s Children Christmas Service on Sunday 9th December at 9am. St Faith’s Kids will be presenting a Short Play and song and enjoy singing some lovely Christmas Carols. A small plate of Morning Tea would be appreciated. All children very welcome…..

QUAIRADING LADIES BOWLS GALA DAY
A very successful Gala Day was held on Friday 2 November with 24 teams from surrounding districts and the metro area competing, including Quairading teams. Weather conditions were perfect for bowls, mostly overcast with a slight breeze. The winners of the day were Gwen Gentle’s team from York and runners-up were Glenys Hastings’ team from Beverley. Congratulations to Pamela Caporn and Donna Hayes in the Captains office on such a well-run event. Many thanks to the catering coordinators, kitchen helpers, bar staff and all members who provided food on the day. We had many compliments on the delicious lunch and afternoon tea. This event could not have been held without the very generous support of our many sponsors, who are greatly appreciated. Please remember to give your support to them in return whenever possible.
