FROM THE EDITOR We’ve certainly finished twenty seventeen on a high; a busy, busy high. December has been jam packed with events and activities here at the Quairading CRC, all of which have been very well supported—thank you so much if you were involved. We hosted 21 locals and our local OIC John Hancock for Cuppa with a Copper, we soiree’d with 26 of you in the Town Hall “Courtyard” for Business After Hours (EPIC venue!), we talked Facebook and coaxed a few new people to sign up at Facebook for Oldies, we learnt new Excel skillz from John Oliver with an excel-lent cosy group at the Beginner’s Excel Workshop, we hosted Quairading Earthmoving and their fleet of staff for a Christmas breakfast, we supervised Noah Bavin for a week of work experience and we even managed to keep the fort manned and doors open all throughout! We’re taking advantage of the upcoming quiet time and will be reducing our hours over the next few weeks (full details on page 14). Quairading Book Post will be happy to fulfil your faxing and photocopying needs during our closed times (when they’re open) and we will check our emails from time to time so carry on sending us friendly electronic mail. Included in this final edition of the Banksia Bulletin for 2017 is a cheeky little Christmas Mad Lib on page 32, muchos family fun guaranteed. Pro tip: laminate the sheet and use a white board marker so you can play again, and again and again! Yeah, I love mad libs. This week we’ve announced our first big event for 2018. It’s called Women’s Business, and you’ve guessed it; it’s for women and it’s about business. With funding support from Department of Communities Grants for Women program, we have a range of speakers (including Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC Governor of Western Australia!!) talking about economic independence, shares & investments, turning passions into dollars are more. All the info can be found on page 24 and registrations are now open via https://events.ticketbooth.com.au/event/womens-business or at the CRC. March 2018 will also see the return of our Bike Week event, Tour de Quairading! We had a brilliant turn out at our inaugural event this year and some solid feedback, so this time around will be even better! Pencil in Sunday 25th March from 10am! GENERAL WASTE & RECYCLING COLLECTION CHRISTMAS WEEK 2017: We have made the following arrangements for the collection of services which would normally be done during the week 25th to 29th December 2017. General Waste and Recycling will be collected on Sunday 24th December instead of Monday 25th December. All services will be as normal for the New Year Week. All Christmas run information will be posted on our website avonwaste.com.au QUAIRADING CLUB: Expressions of interest are sought to lease the kitchen in the Club. Interested parties should apply in writing to the Committee, Quairading Club, 22 Avon Street, Quairading. Please include a brief outline of your plans, opening hours and a sample menu. DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH MEDICATION? Please remember to ensure you have up to date scripts and enough medication to see you through the Christmas/ New Year Holidays. Please contact the Doctor’s surgery for an appointment to renew your prescriptions. DOCTOR’S SURGERY (SKIN CLINIC CHARGES FOR LIQUID NITROGEN TREATMENT): Please note all appointments for SKIN CLINIC CHECKS ARE BULK BILLED. However, if your lesion/s requires Cryo (Liquid Nitrogen), a fee of $10 will apply. Follow-up for the same lesion/s will incur a cost of $5. Attendance for new lesion/s will again incur a $10 fee with subsequent follow-ups for same lesion/s being $5. This fee applies to all patients requiring Liquid Nitrogen treatment. There are no words to adequately thank everyone for their assistance with the fire on our property Friday 8th December. We feel extremely privileged to have such wonderful neighbours and a fantastic community that took such good care of Don and assisted Gary and Cody on the night and in the following days. Don is on the mend and back at it, largely due thanks to the expert care he received from Alec, Merv, the St John Ambulance crew and staff at Quairading Hospital.

2017 P&C PRESIDENT’S REPORT Good morning students, staff, distinguished guests, ladies & gentlemen. It is with mixed emotions I present my final report as P&C President. The last 3 years has been very very busy & rewarding. A big thankyou to all the wonderful executive committees I have worked with, the staff at QDHS and all the amazing volunteers within our small school community & town. We all have that common goal to help provide useful educational resources and experiences to all children at QDHS. The P&C this year has provided approximately $8000 to the school. This breaks down to $2000 for the computer lease, $1500 for Year 5/6 camp, $200 to each of the 4 junior class cost centres, $300 to the K/PP cost centre, $2475 for the Interschool Athletics Shirts (which look fantastic thanks Rosie) and ½ the cost of the Year 6 graduation jumpers. The other half is paid by the school itself. These jumpers will be presented early in 2018. Back in April I applied for a Balls4All Grant and was successful in obtaining Netballs, Cricket bats, balls & other equipment for the kids. Very exciting, except we are yet to receive it. They assure me it is still coming. 200 of the 1100 shipments are still outstanding. New equipment for 2018..hopefully Our fundraising has been scaled down this year, focusing on larger fundraiser events (as was indicated by all in the survey conducted last year). This resulted in a very long tradition of catering for weekly rotary meetings to cease. Thank you to the Rotary club for their understanding and continued support of the P&C. We will continue to cater for the larger events held by Rotary. Thank you to Sarah Caporn for coordinating the Mango drive at the start of the year. Something we may look at doing again.
Our uniform shop continues to tick along with Rosie Duncan & Sarah Caporn doing a great job in there to ensure there is always enough stock available for all. Thank you ladies. The canteen operated a little differently this year with Audra Cosgrove & Tanya Adams putting their hands up to run the canteen week in week out. They also introduced some yummy home-made meals of which they were making themselves. We did have a big cook up in the Home Ec room in term 3 to take the load of Audra & Tanya, thank you to those Mums who came in & smashed out over 150 muffins, 100 lasagnes, spag bog & mac n cheese meals in a morning. Audra & Tanya have indicated they can no longer maintain this level of commitment so the running of the canteen will convert back to parents being rostered on each week. This will be discussed further and voted on at the AGM early in 2018. No amount of words can portray how grateful we are for your commitment and time to the P&C and the kids.
