From the Editor Thank goodness birthday month is nearly over. It has well and truly hit me for six—but it’s been a very fun time! Stoked with how many of you have mentioned you’re stretching your birthday into a week or a month too, you absolutely deserve it. Our workshop last week with Tomorrow Man was incredibly well received. According to the facilitator and all the attendees I’ve spoken to since, we should definitely do it again! The session presented a rare chance for blokes to open up to each other, to share and to realise there are many complex challenges and feelings they/we all face regularly— and that often we’re not alone in our battles. The session with Tomorrow Woman unfortunately had to be postponed, but this means there’s still a chance for the women of our community to get involved. This event will now be held on Tuesday 2nd August at the CRC—give us a call for more info or to register. There are a bunch more local events filling out August including an Industrial Relations workshop with Rural Edge on the 9th, First Aid Course at the Sub Centre on the 20th, a Dessert Night and a Quiz Night at the Hotel (page 27) and Story Time with Meg on the 29th. Pushing through to early September, we’ll also be hosting a Tiny Tots First Aid Course at the CRC on Saturday 3rd September (thanks to an excellent suggestion from a new local parent!). On pages 22 and 23 of this Banksia Bulletin, you’ll find some info and a registration form for our Quairading Car Rally to be held on Saturday 17th September. Along with a band of merry helpers we’ve been traversing the countryside, planning the best “off the beaten track” route and cooking up some fun challenges. There are many logistics we’re still ironing out, but you can now start getting your team together and get registered! First in best dressed with your form and payment, we’re capping this event at 26 vehicles. We hope you enjoy all the other content in this Banksia Bulletin, and as always we’d love to receive more articles from you, your clubs and your businesses too! Lastly, it seems like we might finally be reaching our local peak in COVID cases—remember to be kind to businesses and groups who are stretched a little thin whilst staff are in iso, we ain’t through it yet!

Loose Stitches Thank you, thank you, thank you! To the Quairading community and the sewing/quilting community out there. The support you have given our shop, Loose Stitches, has been absolutely amazing over the past 7 ½ years. It was with heavy hearts that we have decided to shut the doors but life takes you down many different paths and we need to focus on other things. We were the lucky ones to have been able to share our passion, creativity and love of sewing and patchworking with many people. Lastly a huge thank you to the Co-op, our fabulous supportive landlords. Quairading Sub Centre Benefit Fund Update Benefit Fund membership fees have now been set for the 2022/2023 financial year, with these being: Family Membership: $101.00 Single Membership: $61.00 These memberships cover you (and your family for family memberships) for all Ambulance transport within WA, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week for 12 months. With interstate travel now freely available, we wish to advise that WA does NOT have reciprocal agreements with all states for Ambulance transport: ACT, Queensland and SA do NOT have any agreement with St John WA, so unless you have private cover or travel insurance, any ambulance transport costs that you may incur will be your responsibility. NSW, NT, Victoria and Tasmania do have reciprocal arrangements with St John WA for those with Benefit Fund memberships. If you require ambulance transport in these states, you will most likely receive an invoice. However, if you have an upto-date membership, we will be able to assist you in having this invoice written off. Wamenusking Archery Fun Shoot
On the weekend of the 9th & 10th July, Wamenusking hosted an inter-club fun archery shoot. 33 dedicated archers, travelling from Perth, the Southwest and beyond assembled at Wamenusking for some serious and not so serious archery. A great weekend was had by all. The weather was kind to us, raining only at night. Well done to everyone that competed over the weekend. It's always a great catch-up. Good company, good food, a few drinks, lots of laughs and some great archery. Congratulations to all winners. Nookaminnie Rock Nature Reserve The ‘Rowlie Mellor Walking Trails’ in the ‘Nookaminnie Rock Nature Reserve’ (formerly Quairading Nature Reserve) have had some modifications since last walking season, both to their official names and to the trails themselves. The posts that were affected by white ants have been replaced and the walk up to the cairn on Nookaminnie Rock is now clearly marked in both directions. The view from the cairn atop Nookaminnie Rock is well worth the walk. A new feature on the trail is the 200 year old salmon gum arch. The wildflowers, especially the carpets of pink everlastings, will be making their appearance very soon if not already! If you take a walk and spot any wildflowers, be sure to let the Quairading CRC know and we’ll share it with the community (better yet, send through some photos!).

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm July has been mildly warm really considering it is the middle month of winter. In our orchard the early peaches are already flowering and the almonds which are usually the first to flower are yet to lose their old leaves while the flower buds are swelling up in preparation to bloom. All very confusing! We have had a little over 50 mm of rain and are hoping that the last week of July will bring some heavier falls. The QGLG will be meeting on the 29th at 10am in the CWA hall. Everyone is welcome please come along. Bare rooted plants and trees are available and if they were ordered previously will be arriving very soon. It is a good idea to soak the roots in a seaweed solution for a few hours before planting. Also don’t forget to prepare the holes before putting in the plants. Plant of the Month – Please don’t reel back in horror at this month’s plant, it is a declared weed in WA and in some areas it has become a weed problem. However, it is still planted in many road side and medium strips plantings in Perth and is also still sold in nurseries. The plant of the month is Lantana. At Eaglewood farm I have the orange one called Lantana urticoides or horrida and Lantna camara the yellow one. Lantana is part of the very large Verbena family which includes herbs, shrubs and trees mainly from tropical and warm temperate regions. The plant is perennial, grows as a ground cover and up to a metre high. It is not fussy with soil type and requires very little attention as far as fertiliser is concerned. Perhaps most importantly it is frost hardy and drought tolerant. The colour range is wide from white, pink, mauve, orange and yellow with many bi colours. The white one tends to have a mauve sport from time to time and is also less frost hardy and less drought tolerant than the others. My plants flower profusely and can easily be encouraged to flower repeatedly by simply giving the whole plant a light trim. It produces a small black fruit which is mainly how it can be spread by birds and because it is poisonous to foraging animals it grows without check if it takes hold in bushland. Gardeners need to be vigilant therefore to keep the plant trimmed after its main flowering time. Lantana plants are very attractive to Honey Eaters and White Eyes and many species of Butterflies and Moths. Propagation can be by seed which is probably why there are so many variations in colour and form but it also can be struck from cuttings taken in autumn and by layering which is the easiest way of getting new plants seeing as how the plant grows in a way as to make pinning a branch over the soil quite easy. New plants from cuttings or layering will be exactly the same as the original plant.
Harvest – we are harvesting beetroot, carrots, parsnips, swedes, turnips, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, capsicums, spring onions, rocket, bitter greens, silver beet, English spinach and leeks. The fruit harvest is limited to citrus, limes, mandarins, oranges and lemons.
Things to do – buy seeds of large seeded summer veggies like cucumbers, melons, pumpkins so that you’re ready to sow these in early September; because of the warmer winters deciduous trees are either flowering already or are almost ready to burst their buds so any pruning required must be done as soon as possible. Grape vines and roses should have been done by the end of July but if you haven’t done them yet then this first week of August will do. Now is the time to prepare your tomato, capsicum and eggplant beds, these all are in the Solanaceae family in the genus Solanums (potatoes are in the family too) all the green parts are poisonous in this family but what is important also to know is that they are all gross feeders which means that they want their nutrition available early and lots of it. Quairading Farmer’s Co-op Update
The Co-Op’s AGM is coming up, and wow! What a year it has been! We look forward to a historic level of shareholders attendance at this year’s AGM - we have some announcements to make, as well as a lot to celebrate. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to ask the board questions about our long-term planning and direction. The completion of the layover bay out the front of our building has had a wonderfully, positive effect on our sales. We thought our last year sales were fantastic but wait until you see this year’s results! We are seeing more visitors and travellers through our store than ever before. Did you know that the new self-serve Café fridge has doubled daily Cafe sales?! The café has been doing a roaring trade of soups, sandwiches, salads, meals and rolls. We love the location of the café at the front of the store- it’s making it so easy for people to pop in and grab something quick for lunch. Don’t forget our wonderful team also offers catering. We are still experiencing shortages in some product lines The extreme weather conditions in key horticultural areas, farm worker shortages and covid continues to affect the cost of fresh produce and meat. We are incredibly aware of the pressure this puts on household budgets and are working tirelessly to get this cost down. Covid is “running rampant” in our little town, which includes our team! Team shortages have been a challenge, but the passion and work ethic of our staff, mean we are surviving. PAGE 40

Quairading Co-op FoodWorks has a ‘click and collect’ supermarket. We count our blessings as our community has utilised this service regularly throughout covid and ensures our customers have what they require for the week of isolation. We are seeing more shoppers from neighbouring towns than ever before, and they are impressed with our fresh produce quality. Recently whilst travelling the Wheat Belt Way (wildflower and scenic road trip “google it”) I’ve been checking out the supermarkets between Kellerberrin and Westonia, and as a community we have a very valuable asset that we can be extremely proud of (The best I think). The increase in the support our community has given us in the last year, as well as the increase in visitor traffic means we are breaking sales records. All this translates to being able to stock more variety and securing better wholesale discounts. In summary the more people shop with us, the better our shop gets! We really can’t thank our community and shareholders enough for their support. We acknowledge how scary a pandemic has been, but as a result we have seen people change the way they shop and be more mindful about where they spend their money. This change in shopping behaviour has been a blessing for our co-operative and has funded so many of the improvements we have been able to deliver. Wheatley) I see this in many of the businesses, projects, and infrastructure in Quairading; Co-op revamp, Quairading Hotel, Playground, the Annual Quairading Agricultural Show continuing and I’m positive you could add a few more to the list. I have missed putting Photo Club news in the last three BBs, but that doesn’t mean our Photo Club has not been active. Our May photo competition had our members entering photos with lots of variety. The subject was MYSTERIOUS, this subject had us thinking hard just what pic we should be entering in the competition. It is subjects like this that are more interesting than just a point and shoot pic, as a lot of the pics in the competition had to be created and then the fun doing the photo shoot came later. The June subject was DARK, we had photos taken at night time using the moonlight to light up items in the photograph like windmills, trees and the railway line. Other Dark pics were taken indoors and the photographer had to spend a lot of time adjusting their dials to get the correct aperture + shutter speeds + ISO before they got the correct amount of light, but without too much light to create a DARK styled pic. DARK photo for a subject was really interesting as there are many ideas of a DARK pic, it can include ideas like, human moods, eating DARK food like chocolate, or just a simple pic of an item that is hard to see because it does not have enough light on it. Our July subject was HUMOUROUS. This subject was a big flop, it can happen in our Photo Club that the challenge to take a pic of a given subject is just too daunting and only half the normal amount of pics get entered in the competition. When you struggle to think of a pic to take, a week or so afterwards, often you PAGE 42
stumble upon something that would have been a really good pic to take. So you are still thinking about photography which helps fill in the day. We have been most fortunate recently with Midland Camera House organising an ASTRO shoot at Kokerbin Rock a few weeks ago. There were about 30 photographers (4 from Quairading) at this event and we learnt some new techniques and how to take pics of the Milky Way. It’s not that hard to do, you just need a tripod to hold your camera steady and to set up your camera you can just search instructions on your mobile phone. It gave us a chance to use our special lenses we have purchased over the years. Kokerbin Rock is well known as a perfect place to take pics of the Milky Way, so close to Quairading! The main reason it is a great place to take ASTRO pics is because there is no light pollution from city or town lights reflecting off clouds. Also the planets and stars are just a tad closer, thus you don’t have so much dust that is out in space land to shoot through, giving you a clearer pic than other places on Earth. We have also discussed at our last meeting the technology of the awesome James Webb telescope built by NASA which has taken pics of things that happened 13 billion years ago. It gets a bit technical how these pics of the beginning of time have been taken, but our members with years of learning about cameras and lenses can get their heads around how it all works. Members are starting to think about ASTRO pics that can be entered in the Quairading Ag Show with a few new classes being added this year, one of the new classes is Astro Photography.

Warrior Wellbeing Article Your Honest Guide to STIs No, I’m not talking about Subaru’s motorsport division, rather an important aspect of our sexual health - Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). These are infections or diseases passed on during sexual contact with an infected partner. We need to raise awareness of STIs with all sexually active blokes regardless of age and while sex ed is taught to us as teenagers, STIs also affect our aging population. Concerningly, some STIs have also been on the rise throughout the Australian population in the last couple of decades, namely chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis. There’s a lot of misinformation that you might hear going around about STIs (no you can’t catch herpes from a toilet seat) but what are the facts? Firstly, lets bust some key myths: • “We don’t need to ‘tarp-up’ if we are using another form of contraception”. While condoms are a good form of contraception, they are also just as important to reduce the risk of an STI. • “If I don’t have symptoms, I don’t need an STI check-up”. While these little nasties can cause some uncomfortable symptoms, many STIs can be asymptomatic. If we are sexually active and have multiple sexual partners, we need to be getting a check-up regularly. • “HIV only affects men who have sex with men”. About one quarter of Australian HIV cases are attributed to heterosexual sex. Routine STI tests (which include a check for blood borne viruses) are important for all sexually active men. • “They only affect promiscuous blokes”. STIs aren’t exclusively contracted by young men with a lot of sexual partners and contracting an STI does not mean you are ‘dirty’.
So, what can we do to practice safer sex and better manage our sexual wellbeing? 1. Maintain communication. Like other aspects of our sexual wellbeing (prostate issues and erectile dysfunction), STIs are a topic that aren’t discussed very often. Maintaining a positive relationship with our partner must include open lines of communication. This will involve a conversation around recent STI tests, condom use, and contraception methods. 2. Use protection. If used correctly, male condoms are extremely effective at protecting against most STIs. So, it’s incredibly important to use a condom every time you have sex, particularly if you are not in a monogamous relationship. 3. Get tested. If left untreated the impact from STIs can be exacerbated. Gonorrhoea and chlamydia can cause blockages in the sperm tubes and affect male fertility. If you do test positive however, it isn’t the end of the world as you know it. There might be a few awkward conversations but most STIs are easily cured or managed with appropriate and timely medical treatment. This article isn’t intended to scare us into abstinence. Sex should be something that is fun and enjoyable, not feared. Intimacy can be an important way to connect and show love to our partner in healthy adult relationships. We simply need to take responsibility for our sexual wellbeing to protect ourselves and our partner. Remember, stay smart and stay safe!

Katie Hodson-Thomas JP appointed Chair of the Road Safety Council State Government thanks outgoing Chair Iain Cameron
Road Safety Minister Paul Papalia has welcomed Katie Hodson-Thomas JP as the newly appointed Chair of the Road Safety Council. After 25 years since it was formed, the Road Safety Council continues to play an important role in reducing fatalities and serious injuries on Western Australian roads.
The council is made up of members from key State Government agencies, as well as the WA Local Government Association and RAC. Together, they recommend priority road safety projects and programs to improve the safety of roads across the State and support community outcomes. Ms Hodson-Thomas is the Director of Corporate and Public Affairs at the Perth-based arm of global consulting firm FTI Consulting, and has extensive experience in public policy development, government relations and stakeholder engagement. As a member of the WA Parliament between 1996 and 2008, Ms Hodson-Thomas served as a Parliamentary Secretary to the Health Minister, held shadow portfolio responsibilities for transport, tourism, small business, environment and road safety, and was Deputy Chair of the Community Development and Justice Standing Committee. In addition to her road safety experience in her Parliamentary capacity, Ms Hodson-Thomas took a proactive approach to road safety in her former role as Chief Executive Officer of the Caravan Industry Association WA. She was formerly independent Chair of the WA Fishing Industry Council and is currently a member of the Gaming and Wagering Commission. Ms Hodson-Thomas' appointment comes as current Chair Iain Cameron has completed the maximum tenure of five years on the council. Mr Cameron served as Chair of the council from July 2017 and during this time has made a valuable and lasting contribution to road safety in WA. As Chair of the council, Mr Cameron has been a passionate advocate for a safe system approach to road safety and these principles are reflected in the Driving Change Road Safety Strategy that guides WA's road safety journey over the next decade since it was released. Comments attributed to Road Safety Minister Paul Papalia: "I would like to congratulate Ms Hodson-Thomas on her appointment as Chair of the Road Safety Council. "The McGowan Government has set an ambitious target to reduce the number of people fatally, severely or seriously injured by 50 to 70 per cent by 2030 and the leadership of the Road Safety Council is key to achieving this. "Ms Hodson-Thomas's experience in representing the interests of the WA community at a federal and local level gives me every confidence in her ability to lead the council and improve road safety outcomes for the benefit of everyone who uses our roads. Gnocchi with Spinach and Chicken Sausage Ingredients
1 package potato gnocchi 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 package chicken sausages (cooked, halved and sliced) 1 brown onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 cup white wine or chicken broth 1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/2 cup chicken broth 3 cups fresh baby spinach 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream 1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
Directions 1.
Cook gnocchi according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat; cook sausage and shallots until sausage is browned and shallots are tender. Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer.

Stir in wine. Bring to a boil; cook until liquid is reduced by half, 3-4 minutes. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and broth until smooth; stir into sausage mixture. Return to a boil, stirring constantly; cook and stir until thickened, 1-2 minutes. Add spinach and cream; cook and stir until spinach is wilted.

Drain gnocchi; add to pan and heat through. Sprinkle with cheese.

Gnocchi is available shelf-stable and frozen. Look for the shelf-stable variety in the pasta aisle.

The Feast of the Transfiguration is an event when Jesus is transfigured and becomes radiant in glory upon a mountain. The prophets Moses and Elijah appear next to him, and he speaks with them. Jesus is then called "Son" by a voice in the sky, assumed to be God the Father, as in the Baptism of Jesus. The Transfiguration is one of the five major milestones in the gospel narrative of the life of Jesus, the others being Baptism, Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension.
Transfiguration Of Christ, Gori Daniele Mary, Mother of our Lord is the Patronal Festival of St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School in Perth. It is celebrated on Monday, 15th August. On that day a service to honour the day and the School will take place at 8.30 a.m. at St Faith’s Church, Quairading. All are most welcome. During August, the Parish of Holy Trinity, York, is hosting events which may be of interest. On Thursday, 11th August, Jesus: A Life in Class Conflict will be a Public Lecture delivered by Dr Robert Myles, Senior Lecturer in New Testament at Wollaston Theological College, Perth, and the University of Divinity at 6 p.m. in Holy Trinity Church York. Dr Myles is the author or editor of several books including Jesus: A Life in Class Conflict (2023), Class Struggle in the New Testament (2019), Sexuality, Ideology, and the Bible (2015), and The Homeless Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew (2014). Uniting Church Coraling Street The Gospel readings this month have been about actions and teaching for Jesuses followers. The first one was where Jesus sent seventy out to the towns and villages to do the works of Him and they were excited about the things they could do, this I believe represents the mission of the church. Then we had the story of the Good Samaritan a story very well known by most people and shows the love and compassion we should have for our neighbour and anyone in need, then the story of Mary and Marther, Here Mary sits at the feet of Jesus listening to what He had to say, this Jesus says is a good thing and we need to read His word and listen to what He has to say and next Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray. We looked at why we pray , when we pray and what we pray for. This is important to have a quiet time and spend time with Him so we can do the things He expects of us. Sunday

Please collect meals from hospital kitchen at 11:45am and return eskies as soon as possible. There will be a tester meal with the delivery on most days, please be aware of this and ensure it is not given to any clients. 41/2 litres of petrol is available to each driver to help cover costs.
