The series of upcoming event flyers is also heading towards is normal full capacity. Next Thursday here at the Quairading CRC we’re hosting a watercolour workshop with The Sketch Society—this workshop was sold out but a couple of spots have just opened up, move quick if you want to snag one (page 15)! The following week we’re also hosting a new event (at the Community Building) that we’re calling Conversation with a Councillor (page 19). There is literally nothing better and more productive than a good old chin wag, so come on down and be a part of it. We’ll be providing some light dinner and refreshments too!

I would like to thank our families for the tremendously positive approach to the difficult time in which we found ourselves with COVID-19. Many of our families expressed appreciation and support for our staff and I was comforted by the understanding and confidence that was brought about through this predicament.

We tried very hard to balance an educative program for our children, understanding that there were many who were feeling a great deal of stress in presenting tasks to their children. Our staff approached the emergency with commitment, integrity and compassion, for which I am deeply grateful. Our community rallied behind our school and our services. Thank you to the Coop for going above and beyond to help the people of Quairading. It is a pity some people don’t support them now that the borders are open. Going out of town to shop, just add the cost of fuel and it is cheaper to shop locally.

I’d like to sincerely thank our 14 Officers for extending yourselves, learning new skills during COVID-19 and being ready 24/7. We are very lucky in that we belong to a very supportive association in St. John Ambulance Australia and have our Community Paramedic, Drew Richardson, to help us with our continuing education. Planning for your future healthcare: Help shape the revised WA Advance Health Directive form The WA Department of Health End of Life Care Program invites you to have your say on the development of the revised WA Advance Health Directive (AHD) form.

An Advance Health Directive is a legal document that enables an individual to make decisions now about the treatment they would want -or not want - to receive if they became sick or injured and were incapable of communicating their wishes.

The revised AHD template is being developed following recommendations from the My Life My Choice Report and a subsequent Ministerial Expert Panel report on Advance Health Directives. The revised template is aimed at encouraging consumers to engage in advance care planning and to more easily document their health care preferences in writing.

Quairading Rainmakers Inc to host Fervor once again!

As tickets for the 2020 dinners go on sale, we thought we’d reminisce on last year’s events by republishing the post-event report, thank you messages and feedback from last year.

On Friday 20th and Saturday 21st September, Quairading Rainmakers Inc hosted the incredible team from Fervor for two magical dinners attended by up to 60 people each night. Folk travelled from near and far, with over half coming from outside of the Quairading district and one very keen bean flying in from over east!

Fervor ran a top quality service, dishing up 5 canapes, 4 seated courses and petit fours all from the most well stocked kitchen truck you’ve ever seen. The team spent a few hours in the kitchen at the town hall each morning, then all afternoon cooking onsite at our pop up restaurant—in a paddock, 20km from town. We’re overwhelmingly grateful to Yoda, Steph, Bree, Rohan and Dario from the Fervor team for taking a chance on us and coming to Quairading.

The success of this absolutely incredible event was only made possible thanks to the generous local support of so many individuals, families, businesses and organisations. Thank you all so much for your willing supply of goods and services, both paid and donated. We’d like to give a shout out to the following long list of legends: To Greg & Jo Hayes for allowing us to scope out potential dinner locations on their property for months on end in the lead up to the dinners, for never refusing to lend an extra hand, for providing advice, eskies, tea towels, tubs, the best generator we’ve ever seen, aeroguard, one hundred other things and just being the most accommodating hosts we could ever ask for.

Windows Estate, from Margaret River, a small, family owned vineyard in the south west were incredibly supportive of our event with Fervor and provided all the wine for both evenings at an incredible price. Next time you’re in the neighbourhood, drop in for a drop! Also a big thanks to Quairading Agri Services for helping us arrange delivery of a pallet of wine to Quairading!

Likewise we received great support from Funk Cider who provided us with the best cider in WA for the evening. A business created by two farm raised brothers from Toodyay, their Swan Valley venue provides an excellent pitstop between Perth and Quairading! Thank you to Mitch & Sophie Davies for coordinating the pick up of said Funk and the beautiful chairs hired from Perth. Thanks also to Quairading Club & Quairading Pub for fulfilling all our boozey orders outside of the wine and cider. Special thanks to the Club for logistics and storage support! Thanks to Capi for a great deal on fancy little soft drinks and mineral waters.

Thank you to the powerhouses that are Tarns Fraser and Ros Fraser for transporting portaloos from town to the dinner site and all the many cartons of drinks. Thanks to Cam Fraser, Sarah Caporn and Tarns Fraser for being excellent bus drivers, transporting many locals and visitors alike to and from town. Thanks massively to the Quairading P&C and to Colin & Donna Hayes for providing buses to transport said diners.

Thank you to the Quairading Book Post for supporting a local mail drop of invitations and to the Quairading CRC for the printing of those invitations.

Thank you to the Shire of Quairading for the in-kind provision of tables, portaloos and the hall kitchen through the Community Grants Program. This support ensured our event was not only a fantastic experience, but financially feasible.

Edward James Caporn

100 YEARS OLD! On Monday 6th July past resident of Quairading Edward James Caporn known as Jim turned an awe inspiring 100 years old. Due to Covid-19 restrictions we were unable to have a celebration. So, instead we had a small family gathering at their house.

Jim also known as Husband, Dad, Brother, Grandpa, Uncle and Friend was born on Marydale Farm in Yoting, the third son of Dick and Elsie Caporn. His brothers Dick and Henry and sister Phyllis are now deceased. His sister Thelma is still with us at 96 years of age in Perth.

Jim started to establish his farm from a bush block in Adamsvale in 1942. In 1952 he married Olive Thomas and they had two children Mervyn and Helen and they have two grandsons Andrew and David.

In their lifetime they have travelled the world extensively and enjoyed caravanning around Australia. In 1975 they joined I.A.E.A and they commenced hosting overseas farming students (trainees) for 6 months involving them in all facets of farming. When traveling in Europe they caught up with past trainees.

Some of Jim’s community work are as follows:  Founding member of Wamenusking Tennis, 2nd President for many years and is a Life Member.  A Quairading Rotary member for many years and achieved a Paul Harris Fellow in that time.  He was involved in the Quairading Agricultural Society and contributed to the first district display at the Royal Show.

Jim and Olive are still living in their home in Kinross with help from neighbours and a handy man.

They still attend Church each Sunday in Beldon.

Jim enjoyed all facets of farming especially his Merinos and Soil Conservation.

All in all Jim has had quite a fulfilling life In Adamsvale and now in Kinross…

Belles Netball Quiz Night Results

What a great turn out it was on Friday night, July 24th, for the Belles Quiz Night with 120 people coming through the doors. We had 15 tables of intrepid Quizzers, 3 of which were from the visiting caravan group - The Swan River Rovers. It was wonderful to host them and everyone else and it seems like a good time was had by all.

Events like these come together through the help of many volunteers and what a great band of workers we had. Many thanks to Jill Hayes & Tamara Stacey from the Quairading CRC for all their preliminary work, advice, printing and planning; Tamara, Kate Walker, Sophie Davies, Sharon Richards and Bill Shenton on their set up and clean up; the Shire of Quairading for the donation of the hall hire, Mick Van Elden and the Quairading Club for their help with organising the drinks. Kate and Sophie who helped with set up, pack down and ‘manned’ the very busy entry door on the night. Tamara and Bec Wilson did a wonderful job on the bar all night and Hannah Richards and Jolandi Maree were our markers for the night. Heartfelt appreciation all round.

We would also like to sincerely thank the following people who generously donated cash and items to contribute towards the prize pool and overall fundraising kitty: Sharon Richards, Janine Anderson, Debra Stacey, Jo Hayes and Shelley Reeves. We were able to use the donated cash to purchase all of the prizes from local businesses; Quairading Co-op, Quairading Clinicare Pharmacy, Quairading Book Post, Loose Stitches and Quairading Garden & Gifts.

Congratulations to our winners ‘The Shire All-Stars’, closely followed by ‘Hadlow & Co’ and in third place ‘Rissole’s Table’. Winner of the best named table was Owl Hall’s lot with ‘Taking Care of Quizness’.

And now DRUM ROLL PLEASE……after all the costs have been taken out the approximate profit for the evening is $2400!!!! So once again a huge thankyou to everyone who attended, bought raffle tickets and drinks and contributed to making it a very fun and successful evening.

Helping to save our precious wildlife The effects of COVID-19 have somewhat overshadowed the devastation to the people and wildlife caused by the bushfires earlier this year in New South Wales and Victoria.

The Government was able to assist many of the people who were affected by the fires, but who was going to pay for treatment for the thousands of our native animals and birds burnt and disoriented by this tragedy?

Talking about it at our small Monday sewing group, our ladies decided it might be a nice gesture to make a quilt that could be auctioned, with the proceeds going to a wildlife sanctuary specializing in saving and rehabilitating our injured wildlife. After some discussion it was decided to donate the proceeds from the auction to the Southern Ash Wildlife Shelter in Victoria where many of the badly burnt koalas are being treated. Southern Ash is a totally self-funded sanctuary, staffed entirely by volunteers who rely on donations and bequests to allow them to continue with the wonderful work they do.

To help with the sale of the quilt, the niece of one of our Quairading group, who has been a vet nurse at the Latrobe Veterinary Clinic in Victoria for many years, organised to auction the quilt over there on our behalf. At the end of the auction on June 30 the quilt eventually sold for a grand total of $800.

The black and white photo below doesn’t do justice to the vibrant colours and lifelike detail on the quilt, or to the beautiful custom top-quilting donated free of charge by Robyn Short from Geraldton. Needless to say the lady who ultimately won the quilt (a Victorian) was thrilled to be its new owner.

The label on the back of the quilt indicates it was donated by the sewing group from Quairading WA.

Bowmen of Wamenusking

On the weekend of 11th and 12th July the Bowmen of Wamenusking hosted a very successful 2-day Fun Shoot. 39 archers of all ages participated in a field round on the Saturday and a 3D shoot on Sunday.

The archers came from Kalamunda, Melville and South West Bowman. They camped for the weekend and were hosted by the Wamenusking Sports Club who catered for Saturday evening dinner and Sunday Breakfast. Rest a While Coffee van was there bright and early on Sunday morning and were very well received by the archers.

TRG through WA Sandalwood donated a chainsaw for the raffle along with Phil Cummings, a Bruce Rock member who crafted 2 hunting knives. Other sponsors for the weekend were Ag Implements and Cunderdin Post Office. Many thanks to these generous sponsors.

The first tractor in Quairading

The first tractor in Quairading still exists and is Quairading centenary celebrations I was located at the Quairading Vintage Club. informed that this tractor was going to try and be started at the Vintage Club. It was displayed at some of the Quairading shows and at 1987 Grains Expo by the West Australian Vintage Club display.

This is where ex Quairading farmers the MURPHY family helped out who had a large business that was servicing the mining industry all around Australia repairing big machines like Bulldozers & Dump trucks. When asked if they could paint the tractor they offered to help out in any way they could saving thousands of dollars. Initially they offered to do everything, just bring it to their huge workshop and they When the Quairading Vintage Club was founded would totally repair anything and paint it all for the TITAN became the logo of the club because nothing. All the items went to Murphy’s painting workshop and painted as new as the day they were assembled at the Chicago factory 100 years ago. Everthing was brought back to Quairading & putting it back together was like working on a large Meccano set with still some worn parts being repaired and rebuilt and using every tool I owned to make, shape & fit things back together. The Murphy’s continued to help out providing free of charge major items like replacing the worn out rear axles made to size on their metal lathes. I worked on it nearly everyday & was pleasantly surprised that I was really enjoying this whole project & it was getting more interesting everyday. After getting the TITAN back to the farm workshop the task of putting it all back together was completed in 6 months and the engine was running. Then about another 2 months work finishing off minor details like floorboards, coachwork on the wheels (the black stripes) and items like stickers from the USA and a handful of all those little things that need to be done.

It was a proud accomplishment that it taken just under a year to have the engine running again and the tractor could be driven with help from other Vintage Club members. Special credits to John Martin for helping out when an extra 2 hands were needed and also my son Ben and his mates helping out to make it a family project.

2012 Quairading Show and was put on display for the first time after being totally restored at the show day. It was displayed in the newly constructed shed. The TITAN has been driven to the Quairading Show every year since 2012 and when you think its been on display enough times there is always someone who comments that they liked seeing this little baby at the Vintage Club display, so it goes back to the show the following year for its annual big day out and give her a run. At one Quairading show day a journalist took some pics and later the tractor was on the front cover of a Vintage Club magazine which according to some is a very big bragging right. The magazine featured an article and the author saying that he had been to many Vintage Clubs all around Australia & lots of events and show days, quoted that, the TITAN as being the best restored tractor he had ever seen. If I can recall correctly the project cost about $11,000 and without the donations of many of the restoration costs the cost would have to be getting close or even over the $20,000 mark.

In closing this article and talking about the costs I would again like to thank everybody for the support this tractor has after arriving in Quairading on a train has had an interesting history & survived a 100 years of life that in another 100 years may have more stories to tell.

Whilst plodding along doing this restoration I would take some photos with me of where the project was at. One time I was showing Gene Stone and he told the story of how Buck Shenton told him when he was looking at the tractor when displayed at his Slater & Shenton International dealership, that it was the first tractor in Quairading. It was a Memory of the Quairading district that was pretty close to being not known by a younger generation & I was totally surprised when told. I passed this info onto the Vintage Club members and they did not know this when adopting the tractor as the Vintage Club logo. There were a few other claims to this honour, but we seem to think by doing the maths that we are safe to assume this is correct.

"There's a lot more people now that don't have a connection to the country as in years gone by, this offers a bridge because people often don't appreciate what goes on in country life, but once they get out here they really enjoy it," Mr White said.

"It's just a great opportunity for people from overseas and from the city to be able to see how farm life operates and feed the animals, which for so many people is something they've never been able to do.

"Sharing my love of the station and the location with guests is really rewarding and they seem to love it here, which gives me enough incentive to keep doing it."

The Nambung Country Music Muster is held in the last weekend of October and has been running for five years, featuring the likes of Lucky Oceans and Laura Downing over the years.

"We have 1200 to 1500 odd people come in with about 500 caravans and stay for four days," Mr White said.

"We started with 500 people and it's grown from there, now for $100 they get four days of live country music and we've donated $60,000 to charity over the last five years."

While use of the website is increasing among landholders in WA, the State's rules and regulations have been difficult to navigate according to YouCamp.

"It is definitely one of the least progressive States when it comes to streamlining approvals for hosts," Mr Woodford said.

"We 100 per cent agree that there should be rules for how camping happens on private land, but we think that they should be sensible rules so it's a win-win for everybody.

Quairading Vintage Club

President’s Report 2019 / 2020 | Written by Peter Smith Membership The QVC membership has remained quite steady for the last twelve months. It is a challenge for all local organisations, the QVC included, to attract new members.

While not a priority at this time, new members will always be made welcome and current members are encouraged to invite new people along for a cuppa and chat.

Events Along with the annual meeting, held in July 2019 at the cafe, the club hosted the Rotary Club of Mill Point for lunch in September while they were on their “BulldustNBack Rally”. Approximately 20 cars and 40 “bulldusters" arrived at the club for lunch.

With the aid of the QDHS P&C, a light lunch of ham or chicken and salad rolls was provided, along with cake, tea and coffee. Several QVC members were on hand to make the “bulldusters” welcome and have a look over their rally cars.

On January 4 of this year, after our members had gotten past harvest and family christmas commitments, the club held a “New Year” bring and share meal. This was the first of this type of event and was very well attended and I believe, very much enjoyed. I would encourage a similar event next christmas. Dorothy helped organise this event and the food. Thank you Dorothy.

October 2019 saw the annual Quairading Agricultural Society Show and once again the QVC participated. The motor and tractor display was put on, along with Li’l Louie being provided as part of the kids entertainment. Thank you to Andrew, Robbie, Bruce, Gary, Russell and George for the display and the usual suspects, Kevin, Ray, Neil, Phyllis and Allan for looking after Li’l Louie.

COVID19 Up until the COVID19 outbreak, the monthly meetings were very well attended. Unfortunately, as with many other groups and organisations in town, the QVC had to close down. I would like to thank all of the members for their understanding and cooperation through this time.

With advice from Allan, the club reopened with some new procedures in place. Again, I thank everyone for their help and cooperation in signing in and out, and in particular thank Kevin, who kept the kitchen and tables and chairs cleaned and sanitised for us.

New Purchases The profitable show season provided for the purchase of a new evaporative cooler. Not one of those little household coolers - no - this one is big enough to cool the whole shed, all the occupants and blow the table clothes off the tables!! Once we figured to where the electrical plug was, embarrassingly with the help of John Greenwood, the cooler was plugged in, plumbed up and started up.

The fan speed was quickly reduced to prevent blowing the seated members away and after some trial and error, a suitable level of cooling was achieved!

Another project which had been discussed and voted on was the installation of electrical brakes and an axle upgrade to the Li’l Louie trailer. Roger organised and picked up the parts, and along with a couple of helpers and one or two supervisors, the trailer axles and brakes were replaced at Roger’s place. A little electrical work completed the project and the trailer is ready to go.

The Li’l Louie show bookings provided the QVC with a very busy start to the 2019 / 2020 year. 2019 saw approximately 14 booking for Li’l Louie which continued right through to the end of November in Brookton. With the very busy Li’l Louie schedule, it was great to see Sue and Liz help out with the driving. Allan, Roger, George, Ray and Andrew helped out as time permits and Kevin and Neil, with help from Phyllis, remain the Li’l Louie stalwarts. Li’l Louie raised in the order of $10,000 and was booked for a similar workload this year.

Prior to commencing the 2020 show season, Li’l Louie was brought into the workshop for a very thorough service and maintenance programme.

While COVID19 reduced a lot of activity for the vintage club, it is good to see the morning gathering of members, reminiscing and having a cuppa, started up again when the restrictions allowed. If your in town at about 9:30, come in and have a cuppa.

In closing, I would like to thank all the members and volunteers for their attendance, help and good work through out the year and wish the club and all members a safe, enjoyable and profitable 2020 / 2021.

News from Quairading District High School Dear community members, Term three! Where is the year going? At school this term there will be some changes, and some things that will stay the same. We welcome our youngest of the cohort, our Kindergarten students on Mondays now, which is very exciting for us! We will continue with sanitising and cleaning throughout the day to ensure the school is safe for all. Children are asked to sanitise their hands when entering the classroom and to ensure their personal hygiene stays strong while they are at school. Whilst we focus on attendance, we are also still asking that parents keep their children at home if they are unwell. Further to that we have reintroduced some school activities that have already made it a busy term.

This semester, at this stage, we will be hosting parent helpers, assemblies, excursions, celebration weeks and carnivals. We also have OLNA assessments for some of our secondary students. This week is our annual tree planting day in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Quairading. Our juniors will be planting trees on the block across Hegarty St and our seniors are planting at a site out of town. Throughout the term there is an event every Friday , as well as our Book, Science, and STEM focus weeks.

For semester two we welcome some new and some familiar staff to our establishment. Mr Chivers will resume in Design and Technology this semester. Mrs Kath Hudson is helping us with our Covid cleaning during the day. Miss Amy Taylor has won an Assistant position and will be working with the year 4-5-6 class and Mrs Gelmi will be working across the primary on Wednesdays, teaching Indonesian and providing Literacy support. Our new Chaplain beginning this term is Mr Jaxon Johnston (no—no relation!) and just to save confusion he will be known as Mr Jax. Mr Jax will be with us from Wednesday to Friday for semester two. Our recommended applicant for the position of AIEO is Corey Walsh, and when the process concludes we look forward to Corey joining our staff.

Our secondary students went to the Youth Centre with Mrs Anderson, Mrs Hathaway, Mr Jax and Mrs Dann on Friday — undertaking some community service activities. They set the world record for weed pulling (according to some) and whilst doing that they worked on developing their work ethic and community pride, improving community facilities and gardens.

These activities are reflected in our curriculum, and are underpinned by our school values of quality, pride, respect and grace.

The season is looking positive at this stage and likewise, we look forward to a semester that is positive, uninterrupted, and produces successful students who demonstrate excellence in learning in a supportive and engaging environment.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm Plant of the Month – Although July brought us some good expected rain events it was not nearly enough and we are now praying August will be better. The gardens are thriving in the lovely cool weather. All the native shrubs are putting on their show of flowers, the best of which are the Grevilleas, Eremophilas, Dampieras, Hardenbergia ‘Happy Wanderer’ and Wattles. By the time of printing our roses will have been pruned and not a moment too early as the sunny days are bringing on new growth already. August is a wonderful month in the orchard too as most of the deciduous stone fruit trees are flowering and soon the ground around each tree will be covered in carpet of white and pink petals, giving the whole orchard a magical look of softness complemented by the fresh green fruit peaking out of each bud. On the other side the citrus trees are dotted with bright orange globes just waiting to be plucked.

This month I am highlighting a group of plants we probably all use every day in our kitchens or bathrooms without giving them a second thought.

The plants I refer to are Herbs. A herb is not easily described because although herbs are usually non woody plants which die back after flowering there are many which don’t, one being Lemon Verbena.

But one commonality is that the top part of the plant is used for food, medicine, scent or flavour.

When the roots or woody parts of the plant are used we call the product a spice. The culinary herbs of which there are hundreds if not thousands have always been used to enhance the flavour of foods especially meat and fish dishes. Although English cuisine does not have a long tradition of using herbs and spices Australian cuisine has been more eager to adopt dishes from around the world and from its migrants who have added richness and variety to the dishes prepared by every day Aussies. At Eaglewood Farm we grow and use a number of herbs some of which are perennial and others which are annual. There are Basil, Comfrey, Tarragon, Oregano, Marjoram, Thyme, Rosemary, Lavender, Hyssop, Parsley, Garlic, Bay Tree, Chives, Yarrow, Lemon Verbena, Lemon Balm, Lemon Grass, Coriander, Borage, Herb Robert, Mint, Sage, Fennel and Calendulas. I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few and there are also some which we don’t call herbs but are in fact herbs in the true sense of the word like for example artichokes.

The idea of growing herbs recognised for their medicinal properties is appealing and although caution is needed in this area, there are a number of herbs recognised for their health benefits.

Echinacea – antibiotic and reduces flu symptoms Garlic – antibiotic, expectorant, helps prevent colds Horseradish – helps reduce symptoms of flu and sinusitis Hyssop – for treating coughs and bronchitis Lemongrass – for fever and infections Sage and thyme – antibiotic for throat and mouth infections Bay Leaves – for digestive help

Dangin Cricket Club Written by Bullit Hadlow Next year celebrates the 100th anniversary (or thereabouts) of the Dangin CC. The club started playing on the Dangin Sportsground in 1922. A plaque was erected by the faithful several years ago to commemorate the playing of the game in Dangin and to celebrate 50 years of Dangin’s association in the Quairading Cricket Association. A large group of young and old players and supporters helped celebrate the event.

To ensure that accidents were kept to a minimum it was decided to play both games in Quairading. Jesus is telling stories of what heaven is like. It is very valuable, a pearl of great price or treasure that exceeds the value of anything we have, to the extent that all we have is given up to receive it. Jesus then tells the story of how people receive the message and different ways people respond.

In the story of the weeds, it shows that those who follow Jesus obey the Word but those who don’t are the weeds and liable to be burned. Heaven can start in our lives as small and grow into something big.

Separation, a time of change Nobody goes into a marriage thinking that it will end in separation or divorce, however many blokes find that when their marriages do end, that separation and divorce are among the toughest experiences they will ever have to face. Blokes go through a range of intense emotions during this time, including loneliness and sadness; shock, hurt and bewilderment; anger and frustration and sometimes relief that differences are finally out in the open.

These responses to distress are all perfectly normal. Thankfully, most blokes can face these challenges and go on living fulfilling and happy lives, keeping in mind of course that this does take time.

Separation is complex and can involve feelings around the loss of:  your partner  family structure and routines  involvement or reduced contact with children  family home  friends and social life  meaning and identity

properly. It may stir up memories and feelings you thought you’d put behind you. You might grieve the life you previously had. Therefore it is important to acknowledge that grieving is personal - we all do it differently. Some blokes may find comfort in focusing on activities like sport and hobbies, work, or planning a path forward. It’s not a one size fits all scenario so, it’s important to find out what helps you.

There is a temptation at this time to cut yourself off from others. Your circle of friends and family networks may change now that you have separated. Even if you’ve maintained contact, you may be reluctant to lean on them for support. However, withdrawing socially will limit the number of people you can talk to and won’t help you to overcome the grief and loss of separation. Social isolation may increase the risk of depression, reliance on drugs and alcohol, and even suicide.

If you have ongoing negative thoughts or find it difficult to cope with your circumstances, it’s important to seek help as soon as possible.
