For the past few months we’ve been working collaboratively with the Shire of Quairading and the Quairading Tourist & Tidy Town Committee on the development of a Quairading Tourism Strategy. We want as much input from across the community as possible and so over the next couple of weeks we’ll be luring y’all into the pop up space between the Pub and the Quairading Co-op for chats. Have a gander at the installation currently in the window next time your down the street and get your thinking cap on before the Open House sessions on the 27 th and 29th July and 2nd August.

The BreastScreen WA van rolled into town this morning and is parked right alongside the Quairading CRC until the end of the month. If you’re a breast-having woman of a certain age (over 40), get yourself in there and get your gals checked. Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate and neither do the wonderful staff running the screening van – checks are completely free! Make a booking by online or by calling 13 20 50.

At the CRC this month, we’re hosting a Cuppa with a Copper (two coppers in fact!) on Wednesday 14 August – yell out if you’d like to come along. The evening after, we’re hosting our third annual Cabernet & Canvas – this time on a Thursday just to mix things up, which is proving quite a popular option. There are still a few spots left, so if you’d like to join in the fun just get in touch with us to put your name down and pay for your spot. It’s $65 per person, and BYO drinks and nibbles.

Another mobile service visiting us soon, is the Centrelink Mobile Service Unit which will be parked at the Quairading CRC, on Friday 16th August – for one day only! If you need to speak to a real person, face-to-face, about anything Centrelink or Medicare related pop in on the day.

Lastly, Curtain Raisers rehearsals kick off this month! YAY! If you’re keen to be involved, come along to the first table read on Monday 5th August at the Town Hall from 7pm. In case you haven’t heard, we’re doing MAMMA MIA!! And in case you can’t tell from my even greater over-use of exclamation marks than usual, I’M EXCITED!!

THANK YOU Our family would love to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone in Quairading for their incredible support of our family and generosity towards Run2Cure for the childhood cancer Neuroblastoma. It has been a rollercoaster since little Ben arrived in August last year, and we were almost immediately thrown in to the scary realities of cancer. A huge positive throughout has been experiencing the kindness and community spirit that has been gifted to us from you all. It has provided us with strength. Walter and I are so touched that people could support our efforts to raise funds towards research of neuroblastoma. We have benefited enormously from recent research discoveries, which have so far lead to Ben being able to avoid Chemotherapy. For this we are incredibly grateful to the people who donate and the inspirational research doctors. Our own parents would also like to convey their appreciation too as parents themselves and grandparents, over $11, 000 was raised for research!

We start off this month with a big welcome back to our Practice Nurse, Jess Richards. Fantastic to have Jess back from maternity leave to meet our patient needs.

Prescription requests attract a $10 fee per request. This is a blanket fee for all patients. Please allow 48hrs for your script to be available at the front reception. If you receive a script with no repeats, this could mean that your GP may need to see you for a medication review or simply that the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme has changed prescribing rules for that particular drug. You should make an appointment to discuss this with your GP.

Just a friendly reminder of the consumable charges that were introduced last financial year.

These additional charges are attached to both Bulk Billing and Private fees for ALL patients.

Either Private or Bulk Billing Fees apply when you attend for a consultation. Consumables are items we must purchase for use during a patient’s consultation and this cost must be covered by the patient with or without a Commonwealth concession card and is payable at time of consult. The cost of the consumable to private patients will be billed as a separate item at the time of your consult as it is not covered by Medicare or private health fund.

A message from our lady doctor – Dr Ellie Brusasco Over time I have slipped into being less strict about sticking to womens’ health and mental health issues only, and this is now causing problems, and therefore needs to be re-instituted.

The program is a Women’s Health outreach program, and it is important to stress that I visit Quairading in addition to, and NOT instead of, the local GP who remains the primary doctor.

The government, through Rural Health West, is funding the program for rural women to be able to see a female doctor for womens’ health-I have added mental health as well.

There are several good reasons for this (apart from the above ie the program’s intention): -it is very difficult for me to follow things up in a timely manner, even with remote access to notes, as I only visit periodically-sometimes with gap of up to 8weeks or so. The spacing of the visits means that it is not ideal for ongoing matters that need urgent/semi-urgent follow up. It can end up being quite clumsy for both the patient and for me.

-due to the above, I have been having to over-use the cooperation of the local doctor. It is not fair to ask the primary GP to be writing forms for eg MRI neck etc and confuse the situation of who is following up what (which has medico-legal implications as well). My intention going forward is to rarely have to ask the local GP for assistance between my visits eg only for urgent severe abnormality that needs follow up.

-the wait list has blown out. For example there are 9 ladies waiting for appointment in Quairading at moment (June 2019) which is way too much, and I recently had to ask for extra funding to schedule an extra visit to Dalwallinu (end May) as the waiting list was several months.

So how to change the situation?

-for new patients: I have asked the receptionists to inform you that I visit for women's and mental health only and you are to see local doctor/another doctor if your concern is not women and/or mental health. I realise due to confidentiality that receptionists cannot ask a patient what they are booking to see me for-however they can tell patients what the rules are and hopefully patients will do the right thing and not book to see me inappropriately.

-for existing patients: I have asked the receptionists to please also inform them of the rules. It may well take a few visits to transition.

CREATIVE ARTS SOCIETY UPDATE From QCAS President Russell Stacey

T

his is a update of what is presently happening at the local Quairading Creaive Arts Society. Before we held our Annual General Meeting we discussed if the Creative Arts Society should close or keep on going. The number of active members over the last 48 years has reduced in numbers like lots of other Clubs in the Wheatbelt towns & we had to get some new persons to take on positions. Teresa Goodgame had informed us that she would not be taking on the Presidents position & without a President , then a Incorporated body cannot officially continue . I have taken on the role of President and the Arts Society has not closed doors. The Society has been going since 1971 and we realise its not like it used to be in its glory days. We just want to keep the QCAS going for the benefit of the Quairading community catering for those who enjoy doing a bit of artwork. At the AGM the other Office Bearer positions were taken on

by Barbara West as Vice President , Phyllis Marrett as Treasurer & Peter York as the Secretary.

Officially we will hold 4 meetings a year combining them into our weekly activities held at the CRC .We will continue to meet every Thursday at the CRC Art Space room starting at 10am & finishing at 4pm.With usually about 6 people attending the art/craft work ranges from people just doing their own interest like painting with different mediums, sculptures & pots made from clay and Barbara West never misses a day making another woollen bear or Australian animal for sale at different shows. We wont being having a Feature Artist every year like we have had in the past . We have held 46 Feature Artist Exhibitions but kinda ran out of Artists that have to live in the Quairading shire as well as organisers .At the moment the plan is to have one next year and we will be featuring a collective of artists displaying their work with a Theme based on being AUSTRALIANA thingys.

The planned idea is for anybody to display a few or more items even if they have been displayed in the past which will take the pressure off a singular invited artist having to fill the room. At the moment to have just one feature artist it will result in nobody committing to being the Quairading Shire feature artist.

We have the talented Connor from the post office heading off to a career of piano playing in the field of performing arts .We have the active local photo club doing visual artwork with a multitude of creative stuff with their photos. We have other photographers entering their photos at the Quairading Ag Show with over 300 entries .The Bel Canto singing group do visits at Retirement Villages & have been to Kellerberrin. I personally am at the moment welding another sculpture to enter in a metal competition held at Wundowie. Geoff Pritchard is well known for doing something with his woodwork nearly everyday and is always making something from a slab of a locally cut gumtree wood. There is lots of activity happening with the Ladies at the Loose Stiches doing something with a sewing machine. Peta West has gone big time and making a movie with a local actor which will soon have people in Hollywood talking about the artistic talent coming out of Dangin which is near Quairading!

We have people from Quairading doing dancing & theatre. The list goes on with the local 2019 Curtain Raisers Musical being held again this year with all of those talented singing actors and home grown musicians in the supporting band. Just about every house in Quairading has someone doing their own little hobby, even the garden is a form of doing something crafty. We invite you and your friends to just rock up at the CRC Arts Space on any Thursday that and join in the fun or just come along and have a cuppa and a chat.

If you have convinced yourself that you have no talent at any art work just rock up and have a game of cards or have a go at drawing a stick person with a pencil.

When first started 48 years ago the Arts Society had something on nearly every week day at the old house which was opposite the Catholic church. The various types of artwork & craftwork done back then is still actually happening in Quairading but it is more like a home hobby that doesn’t get displayed to the public. Art is about expressing something that interests a individual or culture. There are still persons dabbling in the traditional form of artwork PAGE 43

CENTRE BASED DAY CARE UPDATE

T

his month we were a bit lucky and went out of town twice! On the 13th June we went to York for Chinese, which the ladies love because we all order a dish and then share it around, so we can get a taste of everything. It also means any left overs can be taken home and enjoyed the next day, ‘yummmmm!’ - says Mary.

After our meal we all went up to the local lookout to take in the beautiful views, as you can see in the photos. Irene particularly liked the rocks that were up there.

Our second outing was on the 27th of June and saw us visiting Taria and Frank at Myola Garden Café, just outside of Bruce Rock. Here we enjoyed one of the best meals we have yet to taste on an outing, we can all highly recommend it, not only the meal but the service too. We also got to purchase and bring home some plants for our own gardens.

There is even more to see than what is depicted in these photos but the café was slowly filling up with patrons so I couldn’t take anymore, make the trip yourself, it’s well worth a look.

1979 QUAIRADING FC PREMIERSHIP T hey said we wouldn’t make the finals, let alone win the flag. The local Avon media and Avon FA “experts” had given the Quairading boys no chance at being a finalist, let alone taking off the 1979 AFA Premiership. And we didn’t give them much of a reason for any change of opinion after copping an unholy 101 point belting at the hands of red-hot favourites, Railways, in Northam and then a thrashing (68 points -- at home!) from one of the lower teams, Kellerberrin, only weeks before the finals. We were gone. Just, according to some pundits, “a bunch of scrubbers” and we may as well have packed our boots into our bags and headed for an early “Mad Monday”.

Well. That’s what they said.

The other finals’ results saw Brookton defeating Beverley in the first semi-final and then (Brookton) cleaning up premiership favourites Railways in the preliminary final.

Coach Trevor “Spriggy” Allsop didn’t say anything like that at all. We kept training hard, got several injured players back and played ourselves into some form. So much form that, as the finals approached, we managed to find ourselves confident that we could do well. Tradition tells us that you do not give the Quairading Football Club up as a lost cause. Or you can do but you do so at your peril. Time and again and time and again, in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s, right through to the present day, the lads have pulled off some of the most extraordinary victories when all has seemed lost. If you want to sit with me for an hour at the “local” (and it’s your shout) I will recount some absolutely glorious tales of backs-to-the-wall victories. Of derring-dos and derring don’ts. Of thrilling last-gasp Grand Final triumphs and magnificent individual deeds victorious. Of masterly coaching moves that have dragged the Mighty Red and Whites from the jaws of defeat to outstanding victory. Some of them, if you have some QFC passion, will bring tears to your eyes.

And so it was off to Tammin to play top placed Railways in the second semi. A howling gale greeted the lads, blowing straight across the oval making scoring and just playing the game difficult.

Robert “Foosh” Fairhead is the only bloke I have ever seen mark his own kick - 30 metres behind from where he kicked it! Quairading, however, played with an intensity that wasn’t on show at the previous meetings with Railways and ran out victors in a thriller by 3 points.

Cunderdin was the venue for the 1979 GF and the lads hopped on the bus for the journey north to do battle with the Brookton boys. It was a quiet, sombre trip with all players on tenterhooks, nervously looking forward to the day’s events.

Quairading’s team was : FF:- D.Bland, J.Hinkley, V.Hadlow. HF:- W.B.Lee, T.Allsop, G.Hadlow. C:M.Wells, K.Bland, M.White. HB:- R.Heal, R.Poultney, G.Banfield. FB:- C.Squiers, A.Fairhead, G.Nicol. Ruck:- E.Anderson, G.Green, P.Chatfield.

Res:- R.Wells, R.Fairhead.

But I digress.

After a stirring pre-match address in the tiny little trainers room (honestly I don’t know how we all fitted in there!), which included “Rocky”, “Up There Cazaly” and Rooster putting his fist through the door on the way out, we ran onto the ground with the hair standing up on the backs of our necks. Spriggy had worked us into an uncontrollable frenzy!!

Unfortunately we left it in the changerooms.

This was 1979 and this was to be one of those wonderful stories.

Brookton made all the moves in the first quarter giving them a handy break at quarter-time. The Quairading boys got back to within a couple of points at halftime with Jacko Hinkley kicking three goals and Greg “Potts” Hadlow kicking a couple in the second term. During this quarter “KB” Bland, who was playing a great game, took a spectacular mark that resulted in him landing on his head and being carried from the ground. We thought we’d lost him for the remainder of the day.

Because of the effort we put on the track and the confidence instilled into the team by Spriggy, it came as no surprise to us that we finally found ourselves, not only in the finals, but in second spot on the ladder behind Railways, with Beverley and Brookton filling the other two positions. Only eight points separated the four teams. By the way, we were the only team in the finals that didn’t have PAGE 46

The third term saw both sides sparring at one another until Brookton managed to break clear with a couple of goals and lead by a around 20 points at “lemons”.

The last term saw the Red and Whites dominate with all players putting their hands up, particularly when KB came back onto the ground midway through the term. Rod Wells’ last quarter tackle will go down in Bulls’ folklore. (But don’t tell him that!). Mark Wells’ match saving mark in the goal square, Gary Nicols and Greg Banfield dashing out of the backline, Big Ed “Old Bewdy” Anderson dominating the ruck and Brucey Lee running like his life depended on it were just some of the unbelievable “Quairadingesqe” moments from the last quarter. The lads were unstoppable, got their tails in the air, got their heads in front and eventually ran out reasonably comfortable winners – 13.17 (91) to 11.9 (75).

Pandemonium broke loose!! I can still see Barry “Chook” Robinson trying to hide the champagne bottles from the policeman underneath a blanket.

To come from 20 points down to win by almost that margin puts the premiership right up there with the best of ‘em. To quote one old timer – “I thought you blokes were gone.” (Sound familiar?)

and Bimbo White were judged the best performers for Quairading amongst a plethora of champions.

The celebrations went on long and hard at the old Agricultural Hall until well into the wee hours – and beyond! Following through to the Monday at our local, and to be honest, I don’t recall whither the rest of the week went! But it was a memorable victory and the 40th reunion of this wonderful achievement will be a bewdy.

Come and meet the 1979 lads on Saturday the 10th of August at the town oval for an afternoon of fun and frivolity and let them take you down memory lane. The Bulls are playing York in an AFA fixture so you can watch the footy, enjoy a beer and be absolutely thrilled with tales of bravery, courage under fire, backs-to-the-wall defiance, selfsacrifice for the team -- and even a bit of truth!

Just an aside. The Quairading FC had, as it turned out, a most successful 1979 season. As well as winning the “A” Grade flag, the ressies came a commendable third after being knocked out by Railways in the preliminary final and the “C” Grade boys were runners-up to Railways in the Grand Final.

The Sharks won the flag as well.

ALL IDEAS ARE GOOD, ENOUGH TO TEST After our talk at the RuralX Conference, the second question Mike Knutson asked everyone was what had challenged them or made them feel uncomfortable.

One person said, "All ideas are good ideas."

That is definitely one of the things we said. We even had people practice saying, "That's a great idea!" even when they didn't like the idea.

Here's the secret to that: All ideas are good enough to test.

Every single idea is good enough to allow the person who came up with it to test it out in a tiny and temporary way. Find the tiniest, temporariest way to test any idea anyone wants to try.

You have to be open to new ideas, even ideas you think are stupid or impractical, because you aren't perfect. You can't tell which ideas will work, even if you have decades of specialized knowledge and expertise. Maybe they have a new spin that's going to make it different this time. Maybe they'll improvise something you'd never think of. (see also: experts vs. lots of regular people in Wisdom of Crowds) Maybe they really will fail, but maybe they need this one experience of a tiny or temporary failure to drive them on to future successes.

If you really hate an idea, you don't have to lie, but you also don't have to crush other people. Crushing other people's ideas means you're not open to new ideas, which means you're poorly positioning your community to prosper in the future. (see also: research from Iowa State University on openness and prosperity) Often young people will ask for something that you just know is "never gonna happen." But you can help them scale that big idea down to something smaller that really can happen. We talk more about how to do this in our current video, Connecting with Kids.

So practice it with me. "That idea is good enough to test. How do you plan to try it out?"

Then help them try it, or at least get out of their way.

Noongar Cultural Corner A monthly article produced in collaboration with local Noongar representatives and Noongar cultural organisations.

NAIDOC 2019 Hello community. At our last Reconciliation Action Plan meeting it was a unanimous vote to have this year’s NAIDOC celebration at the Quairading Ag Show on Saturday 12th October. We will be having a Welcome to Country and the Walk of Unity at the showgrounds. We are inviting the community to have input into the NAIDOC celebration this year any help would be much appreciated.

On offer this year is a food stall with traditional food and a place for artwork to be displayed or sold by our local artists. The Noongar community would like to thank the Ag Show committee for their commitment for this event to be staged at the showgrounds this year, they have accommodated us despite the short notice provided.

RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN MEETING Our next meeting will be held at the Quairading CRC on Wednesday 21st August at 10am. We have the president of Aboriginal Legal Service, Mr Michael Blurton Service attending to make a presentation on services our local Noongars can access.

LOCAL NOMINATION FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARD

is blessed with an abundance of beautiful talented and generous Q uairading people , on this occasion however, we’d like to focus on just one in particular.

Kylie Squiers has been nominated in the 2019 Western Australian Regional Achievement and Community Awards! Specifically for the category of ‘Curtin University, School of Education Teaching Excellence Award’.

We would like to recognise Kylie for her tremendous contributions to the town and in particular her influences on the last 15 Quairading District High School Musicals. Kylie has produced and directed these loved productions since 1998 and in this time has been a driving force in fundraising over $20,000 to better the school’s catalogue of musical instruments, exposing our local students to a varied range of musical styles and allowing them to learn and play an instrument they may never been able to access.

Kylie, over the years, has also devoted a mammoth amount of her personal time to upskilling herself. The skills and knowledge she has amassed are then passed on to others through her efforts in tennis, golf, netball and swimming coaching, guitar and drum lessons and adult exercise classes as well as becoming a mathematics specialist teacher.

Kylie has implemented efficient and successful programs not only here in the Quairading District High School but her proficiency is so renown she was headhunted to train staff at Bruce Rock District High School too.

We could continue singing Kylie’s praises as we’ve just touched on some of her contributions to our community but we’ll end this with a GINORMOUS congratulations Kylie, you’re already a winner in our eyes.

Finalists will be presented and Winners announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on Friday 18th October 2019.

MILK-BRAISED DIJON CHICKEN Recipe courtesy of donnahay.com.au

INGREDIENTS  1 tbsp EVOO  1 x whole chicken (1.6kg’s & tied)  1/2 cup (140g) Dijon mustard  sea salt and cracked black pepper  2 tsp mustard powder  2 cups (500ml) milk  1/4 cup chicken stock  1 tsp fennel seeds  3 strips lemon rind  6 sprigs marjoram (or thyme)  4 pickling onions peeled and halved.

METHOD Step 1: Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Heat the oil in a large heavy-based ovenproof saucepan. Sprinkle the chicken with salt and pepper, add to the pan and cook, turning, for 8–10 minutes or until golden.

Step 2: While the chicken is cooking, place the mustard, mustard powder, milk and stock in a large jug and whisk to combine. Add the milk, mixture to the pan, and add the fennel seeds, lemon rind and marjoram.

Step 3: Place in the oven and cook for 1 hour. Add the onion and cook for a further 30 minutes or until the chicken is tender and golden. Sprinkle with pepper to serve.

GOOD GOVERNANCE ACHIEVED!

ou may roll your eyes at the mention of ‘governance’ and ‘constitutions’, even ‘rules’ - heck we know we can sometimes but the plain truth of the matter is that without them, chaos ensues.

In mid 2016 the Associations Incorporation Act 2015 came into effect, replacing the 1987 version. The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (slight mouthful) gave groups a three year period to update their old Constitutions to new Rules of Association, making sure they were compliant with the requirements of the new Act. Being humans, we of course didn’t use the full time period to our advantage to get it done nice and early, we left it to the last minute because there’s nothing like the rush of adrenalin with a deadline looming!

And by we, we mean most of you.

Copies of original Constitutions were dug out of the archives; staples rusted red and paper oxidised to a fine dehydrated urine yellow. To our surprise (and reprieve) reviewing a multitude of constitutions was not only educational but even entertaining!

There was old English vernacular aplenty, outdated sexist statements galore and even imperial currency still listed.

GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk

W

e’re mid way through winter and I feel as though winter hasn’t really started yet. There is a long way to go for dams and tanks to be replenished and August is really our last chance for any good rainfall before spring.

The forecast for the coming spring doesn’t sound very inspiring as far as rainfall is concerned which of course also raises the terrible specter of frosts in late August and September. The fair days we’ve had in July have made gardening a pleasure and the early flowering bulbs are adding colour, brightness and warmth to take winter chills away especially for those who have been laid low with the flu that has been so prevalent this year.

Plant of the Month – It may perhaps sound like a strange choice because my plant of the month is not so common in the gardens of our fair town, however, I’m here to recommend the humble conifer. Conifers are so called because they are cone-bearing seed plants. They are evergreen and do not have flowers. Conifers include cedars, cypresses, firs, junipers, larches, pines, redwoods, spruces and yews. Because they are such a large family their growth habits and preferences are also varied. Yews for examples are renowned for making wonderful huge hedges and are more suited to cooler climates whereas the cedars, the cypresses and especially the pines are very well suited to our climate. At Eaglewood Farm I have one Cedrus deodara which will one day be a magnificent feature tree of some ten metres in height and four metres across (if the darn 28s will leave it alone). I have snow drops growing very happily underneath it. There are sixty Cupressus Sempervirens, the Italian Pine or Green Pencil Pine lining the outer edges of the Mediterranean garden.

Nothing says Tuscany more than the pencil pine. We also have Thuja orientalis, the book leaf pine; this grows in a barrel shape, there is a dwarf sized Thuja as well. And one day when we’re long gone someone will be collecting pine nuts to make pesto from the Pinus pinea, the Italian stone pine trees we have on the banks of our dam. There are other conifers growing on our farm but I can’t put a name to them because they came up in some mulch we had delivered when we lived in Perth. They grew quite happily so I transplanted them to make a wind break for the orchard. I can honestly say these 4 trees have grown without any attention whatsoever, they are now over three metres tall and almost two metres across. You may be asking are there any Australian conifers? Well of course there are! These are mainly from cooler areas, the Huon Pine, Bunya and Hoop Pines and of course the Wollemia Pines. The Callitris species is endemic to Australia with many different variations; there are some Callitris pines growing on the east side of town. Callitris pressii is the Rottnest Island pine, it makes a very good wind break. So why grow conifers? Well I grow them because they are tough, drought tolerant, they are green and cooling in summer and because they add a sense of formality to my garden.

It’s time to…

Plant – tube grown native trees and shrubs and any bare rooted fruiting or ornamental trees. When planting bare rooted plants soak them in a seaweed solution for an hour or so this will help rehydrate the roots and lessen transplant shock. It is also a good time to choose and plant new roses.

Sow – Mid August is a good time to sow tomatoes, capsicums, chillies and eggplants. However, if you don’t have a glass house you may need to put them on a north facing window sill because they need temperatures of around 10 to 15 degrees to germinate. Once they have germinated they can be put out in a warm spot to harden up. When they have two sets of leaves put them into a large pot until nearly the end of September. Soil temperatures should have reached around 17 degrees before they are put into garden beds.

Harvest – Broccoli have been abundant as has the Kale and Bok Choi. We have started harvesting Celery sticks, Beetroot, Sugar Snaps and Snow Peas. Lettuces are always coming on because we plant a punnet of lettuces every three weeks or so. Citrus have not been so plentiful because of the dry summer.

Things to do – Pruning is an urgent job now and should be completed before mid August. It is best to wait for a dry day to prune fruit trees as wet cuts can allow infection to set in. Dip secateurs in a bleach solution between trees to prevent the spread of disease. If you have peach or peacherines which are affected by leaf curl, spray with copper just before bud burst that is before the flowers burst open. Another winter job is giving some attention to your tools. Secateurs need to sharpened, wood handles should be oiled to prepare them for the coming summer.

Roses should be pruned, mulched and fertilised. Start preparing the beds for summer vegetables such as tomatoes and pumpkins. These plants tend to be very hungry and will enjoy a bed that has been filled with manures and compost. Dig a trench and keep adding goodies till two weeks before the seeds or seedlings are put in.

The last word – Never underestimate the healing power of a quiet moment in the garden.

Not everyone could attend the treasure hunt so instead of taking the photos all in one day we are going to let members have a month to take the pics . This will allow us to go back and reshoot a photo as we realise the pic could be improved. At Photo Club meetings we bounce ideas off each other how our photos could be improved & the The July photo competition subject was most common way to improve a photo is simply “FEATHERS”. Our take home homework tasks for the month of August started with a photo shoot held on the 3rd weekend in July. Members that could attend met in Quairading and went off on a treasure hunt after given a list of 10 photo subjects. The idea was to take lots of pics and try some adjustments on your camera that never get used. We will then select our best 5 pics and we will have a Pizza, Pint & Photo night discussing the 5 photos you have chosen. This is the first time we have done this and it will force us to get out there & use that camera this month. We have to get those pics taken, sorted & ready in one month a cool or should I say “COLD” winter project for anybody taking photos of the night sky. These pics will form the basis of our next Photo Club calendar.

If you have a interest in taking Portrait Photos I will remind you to have ago at entering in the Photo Club Portrait Competition held at the QDG AG Show. If you start taking some pics now, come show time you should have a pic that might win & you will get your portrait photo & your name displayed on our trophy. All age groups can enter so get your kids out of the house and tell ‘em to go start their career in photography.

The Year 5/6 students have been busy making healthy breakfasts in Home Economics last term (including delicious Breakfast Tarts—Recipe below). Other healthy and exciting breakfasts made this term include frittatas, smoothies, breakfast burritos, baked bean buddies and many more!

BREAKFAST TARTS Serves 2 (4 tarts) Ingredients: 1½ cups rolled oats ½ cup shredded coconut 1 tblspn chia seeds 1 tblspn chopped macadamia nuts ½ tspn cinnamon ¼ cup coconut oil 1 tblspn coconut oil ¼ cup of honey or golden/maple syrup Filling: 1 cup plain Greek or Natural yoghurt 1 tblspn honey 1 tspn vanilla essence Seasonal fruit for topping—strawberries, kiwifruit, apple, bananas etc Method: 1. Preheat oven to 180C 2. Combine oats, shredded coconut, chia seeds, macadamia nuts and cinnamon in a large bowl.

Mix well 3. Melt coconut oil with honey over a low heat 4. Pour melted mixture into your dry ingredients and mix well 5. Lightly grease your tart cases 6. Divide your mixture into portions and place into your tart cases (we used one big case but what ever works!). Using a spoon, gently press the mixture into the case as this will form the tart shell.

7. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until a light brown. Watch carefully to ensure they don’t get too dark or burn 8. Allow cases to cool on a cooling rack. They must be completely cool before filling.

9. Combine yoghurt, honey and vanilla essence.

10. Place spoonful's of the yoghurt into each tart case.

11. Cut your fruit and arrange creatively on top of your yoghurt.

Q-SPIRIT: PHYSICAL EDUCATION It was a big end to Term 2 for our students in Physical Education with both our Primary and Secondary Winter Carnivals being held in the last few weeks. Kellerberrin hosted the Primary Winter Carnival offering students the opportunity to compete in netball, footy or hockey. Of the three sports offered, Q-kids won the netball and the hockey! All of our teams did well and had a great day at Keller!

The Secondary Winter Carnival was hosted in Wyalkatchem this year and offered a participation based ‘multi-sports’ format where all of our students were able to nominate the sport/activity they wanted to participate in with kids from other schools. Options included archery, ultimate vortex, dodgeball (hunger games & hula hut style), netball, basketball, hockey and AFL. Q-Kids had a great day out, meeting and having fun with students from other surrounding schools.

We would like to thank our P&C and Colin Hayes for the use of buses and the Rotary Club of Quairading for their generous donation, which has allowed us to offer these interschool sporting opportunities to students at no cost.

As a result, student participation in these events this year has been very strong.

GOLF CLINIC AT QDHS PGA Coach, Rob Farley came out to QDHS to offer our students in years 5-10 a free golf clinic. This was an exceptional opportunity for our students to learn some technique pointers from a pro-coach! Thanks heaps to Rosie Duncan, Junior Golf Coordinator at Quairading Golf Club, for organising this opportunity for our kids!

After having a successful two trips away for competition this year to Albany and Kalgoorlie, it has now become our turn to host a competition here in Quairading and we are seeking support from our town to help house the people travelling to Quairading. We will be holding the competition over the weekend of 17th & 18th August and we are looking for anyone that has an empty house within the town site that would be willing to rent/donate it for the weekend, people would only need the house for the one night (Saturday), only thing we ask for is a hot shower, toilet and power be available at the house. We have all current insurance papers and will leave your home clean and tidy. If you can help out a local sporting group please contact 0427 454 625 to discuss further.

If you have ever wondered what we do at PCYC (Ag Hall), feel free to come down and have a look, we are there every school term Tuesday from 6:15pm to 7:00pm, we provide a safe environment for people aged 10+ to adult to learn and develop skills in .177 air rifle shooting on a certified indoor range, Coaches are trained through Australian Institute of sport, PCYC Air Rifle training and hold a State Federation firearms licence.

We welcome the public to come down and visit over the weekend of our competition and see all that's going on, only thing we ask is that noise be kept to a minimum and children be accompanied by an adult as it is a Live Firing Range.
