FROM THE EDITOR Firstly, I’m so impressed (and not at all alarmed) by how many of you not only let me get away with claiming a #birthdaymonth, but actually supported it. This could be dangerous. However, celebrating every day for a month has taken it’s toll and I’m feeling every bit of twenty five—and the month ain’t over yet! Roll on August! On the agenda this month we have more Boogie Roos sessions; if you have a small human in your life, I seriously encourage you to bring them down for a groove on fortnightly Fridays from 9:30am (page 11). Our monthly Movie Arvo is on Thursday 3rd, this month screening ‘Snowden’. All we ask is a gold coin for the cuppa and debrief session afterwards. Emma Poultney from MTA Travel (based in Corrigin) will be in town on the evening of the 22nd to share some info on European Cruising, along with Evergreen Cruises and Tours who will have some event-only specials! I hear Emma is also putting on a couple of dranks, so if you like a drank and the idea of river cruising—give us a call to register your interest. Jurek Leon of Terrific Trading will be in town for a couple of workshops midAugust. Jurek is an expert in customer service and assisting tourism based businesses. We’re holding a public workshop on Tuesday 15th August from 6:00pm called “Valuing Visitors” and I’d be SO excited to see heaps of our local business people, community leaders and interested individuals there, to not only learn some new customer service skills, but also to think about what we as a town look like to a visitor and what we can all do to ensure their experience in our slice of paradise is the best it can be. You may not think you play any role in “customer service” or the “tourist experience” but if you’re a local who spends any amount of time “down the street” - you absolutely do. You are all ambassadors for Quairading and this workshop is the first of many actions we’re taking to bring all of our ambassadors together and make all of our promotional efforts cohesive. Here in these pages lies, the nickname list! If there’s one thing I’ve learnt in my long twenty five years, it’s that a town with as many affectionate (and otherwise) nicknames as we’ve got, isn’t normal— but it is srsly epic. Test your brain and see if you know who belongs to each of them on pages 30 and 31. The Creative Arts Society are singing out (pun definitely intended!) for new friends to join their Thursday art & craft group, and their committee. Some members have put together a page detailing many of the activities they partake in each Thursday but beyond that, if you’re looking to get involved at committee level, I reckon they’d love to hear from you! VASES & JARS WANTED Just recently it was my unfortunate luck to have to spend a few days in St John of God Midland Public Hospital, Ward 2C. While everything was very nice, it was lacking one small thing. My daughter brought in a lovely tall bunch of flowers. Finding no vase or large enough jar to enable her to put them in water, she had to take them home again. This was happening to other patients as well. There were no vases or jars small or large available at all. Therefore, if any residents have any preloved vases or glass jars that they are willing to donate, it would be appreciated. They can be dropped off to 38 Suburban Road Quairading or phone 0427 081 942 and I will be very happy to pick them up and make sure they are delivered to the hospital. MEDICAL PRACTICE WHY YOU DIAL 000 INSTEAD OF RINGING THE DOCTOR IN A MEDICAL EMERGENCY? In any medical emergency, the quickest way to receive medical attention is to ring 000. Ringing the Doctor’s Surgery or the hospital means we would need to then dial 000! This creates an unnecessary and dangerous time delay while we do this. We cannot stress the importance of you, or someone with you, dialling 000 for any medical emergency. Once you contact 000, they will set the wheels in motion to provide you with medical attention. They will contact the Hospital and the Hospital will contact the Doctor. 000 in any medical emergency is the first number you dial. FLU SEASON IS STILL ON ITS’ WAY NOW IS THE TIME TO BOOK YOUR FLU VAC IMMUNISATION Eligibility for free National Immunisation Program are; All persons aged 65 years or older All pregnant women All aboriginal Australians aged 15years and older All children aged six months to younger than five years All individuals with medical conditions that can predispose them to severe disease if they become infected with influenza PRIVATE PATIENT FLU VACCINES ARE ALSO AVAILABLE. Please ring and book your appointment with Jess. Your appointment will be bulk billed however a fee of $20.00 is required to cover the cost of the vaccine.
MEDICAL STUDENT We are once again taking on Medical Students. This time our student comes from UWA and is 6th year. Matthew Cockcroft will commence on August 15th and finish his prac on September 13th. During Matthew’s prac, as a 6th year student, he will consult with patients and/or sit in with Doctor and patient. If Matthew consults with a patient, the patient will then be seen by doctor for a normal consult. It is your decision as to whether you are happy to have a consult with Matthew and then with Doctor and/or have Matthew sit in on your consult with Doctor or proceed with a normal consult with no student involvement. You will be asked by admin for your preference and consent. If you have any concerns or would like further information, please speak with Debra.

TO THE LADIES OF QUAIRADING FROM DR ELLIE BRUSASCO Just a quick update about government funding regarding my employer, Rural Health West, and the continuation of my rural Womens’ Health GP Program. Once again the funding is up for review, this time for a three (3) year period. As the new financial year has started, interim funding has been released to cover my visits, but these may be cut? I made my application as strong as possible by submitting your letters, kindly sent to me last year, together with letters from Debra Stacey as Practice Manager and Dr Ade. My submission was lodged on the 7th July, 2017, the outcome will be known in September 2017 and I will inform the Practice of the result. Also for your interest, Rural Health West has launched a website which shows you which specialist you can access in your area. PRESCRIPTIONS (SCRIPTS) WITHOUT AN APPOINTMENT It is the Doctor’s decision as to whether or not you will receive your script following a phone request. This will be based on the type of medication requested and how long since your last consult with Doctor. In all circumstances, admin will try to give you an appointment however; if we do not have one available you may be eligible to request a script without an appointment. All scripts without an appointment are $10.00 to everyone and will require 48 hours’ notice. When requesting your script without an appointment, you must know the medication name and strength you are requesting. Your medications are your responsibility in maintaining your health. As we are always very busy, please do not leave requesting a script to the last week of your medication. If Doctor is not here or we are fully booked, you may not receive your script before you run out of your medication. Please keep an eye on your medication

TIDY TOWNS 2017 JUDGING We hosted the Keep Australia Beautiful WA Tidy Towns judges, Maureen & Jenny on Monday morning (along with Shire and community reps) to show off our wonderful town, as part of our submission in the 2017 Tidy Towns WA awards. These awards are much more than just keeping a street clean and tidy, it recognises groups and individuals contributing to the well being and sustainability of communities, the celebration of heritage and culture and is a chance to highlight everything we have to offer. Maureen was so impressed she's coming back for a weekend with her friends! Stay tuned for award results in the coming months. SHACKLETON UPDATE In 2000 a visitor to Shackleton would have noticed a low point in the town’s existence. The football pavilion had been demolished, the hall was unkempt and contained a brokendown piano, the former school was slowly being stripped by the wind, the Store was full of junk with blankets in the windows and an empty block in Jermyn Street was the precursor of a sculpture park. Now on a weekend, cars abound parked outside the popular Club. The Sculpture Park with its mixture of quirky models and flourishing vegetation pulls in the visitors while the born -again PO Store has become an accepted convenience destination. The Hall – once destined for demolition, has been rejuvenated by the Progress Association. The Bruce Rock Shire built a new adjoining toilet block while interior painting has transformed the place with extensive historical dioramas on the walls. Shackleton, Kwolyin, Erikin, the old railway village and the sporting life are fully covered. The latest effort has seen the new Sir Ernest Shackleton Antarctic exhibition formed in the old men’s cloakroom. Dr Jermyn re-named the town after the hero of the 1916 time and descendants have called to see the tiny wheatbelt hamlet with a famous name. The new Visitor’s Book shows that ‘Word of mouth’ works – a selection: Really loved it! So interesting! So much history! - Queensland Friendly town - great atmosphere. CWA QUAIRADING Parker Street Quairading The next meeting is to be held on 8th August 2017 in the rooms at 10.30am. This will be the first meeting after State Conference so members who have a Constitution please bring this to the meeting as there may be changes for you to note. Welcome to the Quairading Creative Arts Society Did you know? Quairading Creative Arts Society is 47 years old. Since starting it has promoted local artists with the annual Feature Artist Exhibitions. We also have the Music Pupils Concerts and are instrumental in organising music teachers. Bel Canto also comes under the umbrella of QCAS. This service to the community can only continue with the support of community members so why not come along and join us. Annual membership is only $10. Teresa Goodgame We meet every Thursday in the Art Space at the Community Resource Centre to enjoy many craft activities. We have been doing this for an amazing 47 years! The CAS also supports local musical pursuits such as Bel Canto choir and music lessons and concerts for school children. If you would like to learn any item of craft let us know and we will see what we can do. I can teach Needle Felting which is done using wool and barbed needles. An array of items can be created such us - brooches, animals, flowers etc. The fellowship and friendship that occur at our sessions is important too as we get older. Barbara West
If you would like a relaxing and fun day, come along to the Art Space at the CRC on a Thursday from 10am – 4pm and learn different types of craft. My first attempt was a snake, but his tongue kept falling off. Next I made Xmas decorations and painted them in different colours with everyone’s initial on them. They were great to hang on the Xmas tree. Thinking about the show I thought to do a set of 3 cats. I had just finished the first one, I turned around and oops, knocked it over and my cat’s head fell off, so back to start again. I am so proud of the finished set – you will be able to see them at the show. So come along and try your hand at making your own treasures. Hope to see you for a cuppa, talk and join in the fun. QCAS Bel Canto Under the blanket of Creative Arts comes our local choir “Bel Canto”. Everyone can sing. Some sweeter, some higher, some lower and some louder. Put together they all usually come up with a sound well worth listening to. So you think you don’t sound too good but blended with other voices it melds into some very sweet sounds. So you can’t read music but you can read. Well, on a sheet of music is a set of 5 lines covered with funny little dots that have some funny shaped tails. These dots are placed on various lines and some in spaces between the lines. These are called “notes”. If the first note is on the bottom line and the next note is on the second line then you sing the second note higher that the first note and so it goes on. You follow the notes up and down according to how the song goes and just as you sing up and down with your radio so you follow up and down with the notes on your music. Aside from this, we have a talented Choir Mistress plus a gang of people like you who love to socialise and sing and we do the odd field trip and have fun, so come and join us now – any Tuesday at 9.30am. Hello everyone, I have safely got home, even though I'm still a bit jetlegged and tired. It's great to see my parents and friends again, we had a barbecue yesterday which was really good. It's crazy to think about last year, I feel that now that I'm back here I'm starting to understand how much exchange changed me. It was such a great time and I'm sure all the things I learned made me grow a lot. Next week I have the exam to get into my school again, I was fortunatelly able to recognize my australian studies so I only have a few months of school left and, hopefully, get into uny straight after that. I just want to thank you all again for making the past 12 months the best of my life, I will always carry you in my heart (and on my skin). I will keep in touch and hopefully see you soon. QUAIRADING JUNIOR GOLF 2017
This year we celebrate 50 years of Junior Golf in Quairading! Golf is proving to still be popular with our kids. We had 19 smiling faces turn up to the golf course every Tuesday afternoon during second term, eager to have a go at golf. Our junior golfers are set a number of holes which suit their stage and ability. As their skills and stamina improve, they progress to a greater number of holes and less modified rules. The youngest and newest players join the ‘Pee Wee’ group and they practice driving, chipping and putting and play novelty games. When they graduate, they move on to play 3 and then 6 holes. Our kids need supervision out on the course. Thank you to our wonderful parents and grandparents who make time to walk with their kids, Junior Golf cannot exist without your support. It’s also a fun way to spend an afternoon! Thanks to Avon Valley Ladies Golf Junior Promotions, we were allocated three sessions of professional golf coaching with Rob Farley, from Marangaroo Golf Club. It is a fantastic opportunity for our kids to have access to coaching and we love seeing them improve! We hope to see Rob back next year. As well as coaching and club days, we hold a Championship Day at the end of the season. This also marks the final day and wind up of junior golf. Tuesday, 27th July saw our young golfers bring their A game. We had a very competitive field and many results were incredibly close. Congratulations to the prize winners, they are listed below. The kids were treated to chaperones from the Quairading Ladies Golf, a great way for them to learn the finer points of golf. Thank you to Sue, Sarah, Jo, and Dallas, we hope you had fun, too! Matt Woods from GolfWA was also a guest walker, who conveniently had his clubs in the boot and requested to play some golf with our 3 holers! We finished the day with some dinner and presentations at the club house. I would like to congratulate the junior golfers who travelled to Bakers Hill to take part in a Mygolf WA event. (Jack, Will, Leith and Eloise) I am very proud of their independence on course and their fantastic golf. We also had three representatives at the Bakers Hill Challenge Open Day. Well done to Eloise, Leith and Brock for bringing home some prizes. Junior Golf enjoys strong support from the Quairading Golf Club, we thank them for allowing us to use the golf course and club house and for teaching and promoting golf with our children. We would also like to acknowledge Anne and Keith Johnson, who have had a long association with Junior Golf. Our thoughts are with you as you mark Scott’s 10th memoriam. QUAIRADING JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB The Neu Tech Cup was on Sunday 2nd July. The competition for players 5-11years was a great day with the club nominating two teams, with good numbers in both. Congratulations to Mel Hargrave Brady on winning the Fairest and Best for Quairading in the Little Tackers Competition and to Jeremy Allsop for the Fairest and Best for Quairading in the Auskick Competition. Jorja Squiers in her first football competition did well and won the Encouragement Award. Jeremy Allsop also tied for the overall Fairest and Best for the Day. The Neutech Cup Auskick Team

Neutech Cup Overall Fairest and Best On Sunday 9th July some of our players were fortunate to play in the East Avon Association Team that played at the Domain Stadium half time game, between the West Coast Eagles and Port Adelaide. The Pat Ferguson Shield is on Saturday 29th July. The competition gives players in year 5 and below the opportunity to have a day playing footy against neighbouring towns. We have a full team and players need to be at the oval at 9:45 with games starting at 10:30. The Junior Winter Carnival will be on Sunday 13th August for our players in years 7 and below. Those that have nominated need to get money to Kylie by Friday 28 th July. There will be a bus leaving town for the players. All players must wear mouth guards and at this stage need to be at Merredin 8:30 for a 9:00 start (to be confirmed closer to the date). WELCOME TIMERS YOUNG AND OLD!
The Quairading Bulls Football Club have had an interesting season and as we approach the pointy end, we’re stoked to say we’re still in with a chance! It’s all about the magoos (the reserves) and couple more wins will see them in a good possie come September. We’ve got just three games left for the fixture season: Sunday 30th July, at home against Federals Saturday 12th August, in Cunderdin. Saturday 19th August, in Kellerberrin. Our last home game this weekend will be followed by an epic all-you-can-eat Mexican Spread! Get down to the game, cheer on the boys and then stick around afterwards for presentations, a couple of frothies and a taco or two. Go one better and show some sponsor love by calling into the Quairading Pub afterwards (don’t be a fool—go on foot or access the Pub’s courtesy bus). BALLET NEWS

On the 1st week of the July school holidays my Mum and I flew to Melbourne again, this time for a four day BOY'S INTENSIVE TRAINING PROGRAMME at the AUSTRALIAN BALLET SCHOOL. There were 20 boys in my group, and I learnt a different kind of ballet with a former dancer from the USSR, Sergey Konstantinov; strengthening exercises, because as a male dancer it is important for me to be strong; one class about keeping calm under performance pressure and mental well being in dance; and character dance. We also put together a performance piece for the parents on the last day. It was fun to be in Melbourne dancing with so many boys. There were some very talented dancers from all over the country. Only two from WA. During the 2nd week of the holidays I competed in the MANDURAH FESTIVAL of DANCE. I received first place for my Demi Character trio with Clare and Keira, and second place for our Classical trio. I also performed my classical solo. It was amazing to see all the other kids dancing. I also met up with some other dancers who were in the Nutcracker at His Majesty's last year. On Tuesday and Wednesday I will be doing classes again with the Australian Ballet School when they visit Perth to teach Level 1, 2 and 3 students in the Interstate Training Programme that I am currently part of, and taking part in a masterclass. This will be a new experience for me.
