From the Editor What a welcome change in atmospheric pressure this week has been! This winter baby is thriving. This winter baby is also pretending the horrendous late March humidity doesn’t exist.

March was a whirlwind - thank goodness it was significantly longer than February though. At the CRC we held our second Good Grub Social Club, the Welcome to Town Sundowner, a Rural Edge Farm Safety Workshop, an early morning Business Breakfast and a second Story Time session for families.

We felt positively heart warmed after hosting 11 newbies and 15 not-sonewbies at the Welcome to Town Sundowner a couple of weeks ago, and hearing all the reasons why we each either chose Quairading or are stoked to have landed in Quairading! We had retirees, school teachers, publicans, police officers, yoga instructors, closet artists and photographers and long term travellers who've recently made Quairading home. We welcome you all and as we shared on the night, we love your weird, wacky and curly questions and are more than happy to answer your local queries, or work with you to find the answers we don't have. Our community is the land of opportunity and will be whatever you need it, or make it to be.

We’ve got another couple of community events over the next couple of weeks.

Conversation with a Shire Councillor—your chance to come along and be part of a big, casual conversation with our local elected members. Come with a question, or come just to listen and learn.

We’re also throwing a relatively last minute Colour Fun Run! We applied for Youth Week WA grant funding late last year and having just received the go ahead, we’re planning the event for Wednesday 13th April—a perfect school holiday activity. Check out the flyer on page 15 and give us a shout if you have any queries or want to help out with the event (we will need a few colour station marshals!).

From the monthly round up of Instagram photos featured in our Tagged Around Town page (page 7), caravanners and weekenders are out and about!

People are sharing heaps of great photos of Toapin Weir, great camp site reviews and Caravan Park recommendations. With a few public holidays coming up through April we bet the roads and our local attractions are going to be nice and busy—great news if you’re in the local hospitality game!

Lastly, absolutely the most exciting thing that happened to me last month—I became an Aunty to a gorgeous little girl, Harriet Rose Hayes! Huge congrats to my brother Sean and sister-in-law Sigrid (who I will now need to ensure are readers of the Banksia Bulletin!).

Quairading Car Rally It’s about time we brought back the Car Rally, don’t you think? I (Jill) have some vague memories of being a backseat passenger in one as a kid, racing around the district, jumping out to find answers from plaques and signs, calculating distances travelled from the odometer, Mum getting stopped by the cops for driving too slow (a deliberate car rally stitch up!), meeting up with everyone else out the lake afterwards—and clever us, receiving the Booby Prize for coming last, a fabulous country roads map book!

If you’re keen to help us plan a 2022 version, have great insight from rallies of years gone by, sage advice or words of enthusiasm—please reach out. We’re also very open to collaborating with a local sporting club or group and making a fundraising opportunity out of it, but see the main aim as getting people out and about, doing something different, and learning about the region around them.

Another month has flown by. I am very much in Learning phase still, definitely have not progressed to shop keeping P Plates but things are slowly coming together. Thank you all for your patience. Thank you for all the kind words of support, visits and feedback. All welcome. Shout out to Marg and Noel from the Caravan Park who keep us all informed of when the park has visitors. It’s been fun to meet and welcome our visitors.

The Maker’s Keep hosted our first Workshop ‘Blooms’ with Beverley Artist Marlene Willson last Sunday. This was attend by folks from York, Pingelly, Brookton, Wandering, Tammin and Quairading. Wendy from Flavour Town Catering provided a wonderful lunch and the Co-op kept us caffeinated, with Jo and Jade from The Quairading Hotel being fab hosts at the end of the day. Marlene and I will be hosting three more workshops throughout the year so please stay tuned for dates.

I’m teaming up with the Hotel again and hosting a writers group mostly from Perth in May, with invaluable help from Nikki Eggington. We will using the beautiful Nookaminnie Rock Nature Reserve and built agricultural landscapes for our inspiration.

Nikki and I had the pleasure of meeting these lovely creatives on a walking and writing weekend down south and am so excited they have accepted the invitation to visit Quairading.

On the shop front there is lots going on. Clive Stone has been busy creating smaller versions of his fabulous pyrography, with special emphasis on Quairading themes, such as the well at Kokerbin, the little building at Penny’s on Greenhills, El Toro and more! Please come in an view them. His contact details are in shop and he is available for commissions also if you have a special something you would like him to do. Clive is an extremely gifted and generous artist.

Many of you may have noticed the Charlie Colbung’s beautiful painting in the window. This is Charlie’s entry in the Beverley Art Prize, happening over the Easter weekend.

I have disappointed many as I am not able to sell it as part of conditions of entry to the Prize however I have three of Charlie’s paintings in stock and be assured there are more PAGE 28

to come. It’s wonderful to see such interest in a talented local artist. Good luck for the Prize and to Marlene also, who is entering also. It’s a great Easter tradition and worth a visit. Speaking of Easter, I will be open Easter Saturday and having a breather Easter Sunday.

I have welcomed Claire Buckley, a Brookton/Pingelly artist into our maker family. She creates beautiful line drawings which have great appeal to children and adults alike. I have some originals already framed and also gift cards. More artists will be added – I have an exciting new jewellery range from artisan Vivid Ginger coming next month. Finishing touches on collection happening now. You will see a range from Cassie from Bush Wicks in store very soon (cute little Cassie Stone that is!!) and I am sooooo excited to announce some works form the amazingly talented Suzanna Edwards will be coming my way also.

The talented Narelle Higson has been busy behind the scenes creating commissions for some lucky locals. Narelle is a Perth based oil pastel artist who has an amazing talent for capturing our bush and is a frequent visitor to Quairading. We are trying to keep her in stock but her work flies off the shelf! Thanks for dropping by last Sunday Narelle.

French toast fingers Put an Easter spin on classic french toast with these cinnamon and sugar coated hot cross bun fingers.

INGREDIENTS 4 Hot Cross Buns, day-old 2 eggs, lightly whisked 1/3 cup (80ml) milk 2 tbsp thickened cream 1 tbsp caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla bean paste 20g butter 2 tbsp caster sugar, extra 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Step 1 Use a small serrated knife to cut each bun in half.

Cut each bun half into 1.5cm-wide batons.

Step 2 Whisk the egg, milk, cream, sugar and vanilla in a large bowl.

Step 3 Melt half the butter in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add half the bun batons to the egg mixture and gently toss to coat. Set aside for 1 min to soak.

Add to the hot pan and cook for 30 secs-1 min each side or until golden brown all over and heated through. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel. Repeat with the remaining butter, bun batons and egg mixture.

Step 4 Combine the extra sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.

Sprinkle cinnamon sugar evenly over the warm bun fingers. Serve immediately.

Loose Stitches Another busy month has whizzed by!

We hosted a lovely bunch of ladies from the Bay Quilters from Safety Bay on Wednesday 9th, Loosies was one of 6 patchwork shops they visited over 2 days. We prepared a yummy morning tea which they appreciated. They shopped, ate and jumped back on the bus in an hour – phew!!! Thanks ladies, we loved having you at the shop.

Tuesday the 15th saw us take Loosies on a road trip to WAQA at the Adriatic Centre in Stirling. This was a huge day starting at 8:30am and finishing at 9pm, we were a bit puffed by the end but had a lovely day with the ladies catching up and checking out the projects they are working on.

We are having a UFO day on Saturday 2nd April 11am to 7pm, this is a fantastic opportunity to get those unfinished quilts and projects out of the cupboard and finish them. BYO lunch and drinks and Loosies will provide nibbles. $5 each. Good Grub Social Club Written by Tamara Stacey Back in mid-2021 the Quairading CRC applied for some funding through the Australia Post Community Grants Program, and although it was a very competitive application process, our project - Good Grub Social Club (GGSC), was successful. It was deemed to embody the key selection criteria of it being a locally led and delivered project that helps people to connect in meaningful ways and leads to improved mental health. How do we achieve this? The premise is very simple, we create a time and space for ANYONE to come together and share a free meal, casually chat and get to know one another, and if the group feel so inclined maybe play a card game or two. No other agendas, just a very casual social activity.

So far, we've held two Good Grub Social Club lunch sessions and we've had great attendance but always welcome more. I had the chance to attend the latest session myself and thoroughly enjoyed meeting and chatting to new residents to town as well as born and bred Quairading long termers. We enjoyed a super fresh and delicious cold meat and salad spread, made and delivered directly to us by the Quairading Co-op, and plan on utilising other food businesses in town each session to spread the love and offer variety.

We have seen so many new-to-town residents at the CRC over the last 12 months, we know our community will embody the friendly and welcoming hospitality we’re renown for and extend an invitation to join them at the Quairading CRC for GGSC. The next session is planned for May, so keep an eye out in the Passion Sheet and Banksia Bulletin for updates.

Quairading Tourist and Tidy Town Committee As Shire of Quairading Council Delegate to the QTTTC I had the pleasure of attending their first meeting of the year on Monday 28th February 2022 at the Old Railway Station.

The turnout of meeting attendees was large and their enthusiasm for keeping our town attractive, and just as importantly, as rubbish free as possible was inspiring. Committee members will often carry a bag with them in order to collect rubbish they come across on a daily walk for instance. This is quite possibly why we often receive feedback from visitors who note how clean our town is. Food for thought for us all perhaps?

A Centenarian Corner tidy up was scheduled at the meeting and all members agreed to continue on a monthly roster to check The Courtyard plants and surrounds. (I’m aware of one member who even checks our lovely main street bin photographs and gives them a wipe down if required.) A decision was reached on signage to guide visitors to the courtyard, so stay tuned for that addition.

Tour bus operators often request a stopover at the Old Railway Station and are easily accommodated by contacting committee President Ivy. The committee is very keen to rally the troops and get a roster together of locals willing to volunteer to man the station for a couple of hours during the forthcoming visitor season. I can confirm that it’s great opportunity to take some time out and enjoy a chat with visitors so keep an eye out for the call up.

The committee warmly welcomes all new residents and businesses to town – especially a very handy one who has already restored the train station scales to their former glory and is working on the giving the crane a new lease of life. Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm March lived up to its reputation with some hot days but with a gradual cooling trend especially with the nights becoming cooler. There was no rain to really make a difference to soil moisture and therefore watering has continued to be the savior of our gardens. Late March may bring some relief in respect of rainfall but as I write this article it still remains as a hope rather than a certainty.

In the March edition of this article I mentioned planning new garden beds and buying new trees and plants. So what to do? Firstly we need to determine what the chosen plant’s needs will be.

Does it have high water requirements? Does it have specific drainage requirements? Does it need full sun, part or full shade? Does it need protection from summer or winter prevailing winds? Some of these questions are perhaps best answered before the plant has been purchased so that we have the right plant for the right location, always keeping in mind our particular gardening zone.

When the planning has been done, the research completed and the plants purchased the fun part can start. It’s planting time! When digging a hole, look at the depth of the pot and gage how deep the hole should be. It should only be about 10 centimeters deeper than the pot. The hole should be at least twice the width of the pot or even wider if possible. A square hole is better than a round one because it helps direct plant roots outward rather than around. Nursery persons often lament that many people put a $20 plant into a $2 hole and wonder why the plant doesn’t thrive. I’m sure many a keen gardener is guilty of this because in our hurry to get the plant into the garden we simply dig a hole and bung it in. If you have the holy grail of garden soil…LOAM, then that is completely fine, however, if like most of us you have either sand or

In the veggie garden there are lettuce, silver beet, tomatoes, capsicums, eggplants, snake beans and carrots.

Things to do – There is a lot of tidying that is required at the end of such a long hot summer.

Pruning and fertilizing will help rejuvenate plants.

Roses and lawns should have their last fertilizing before winter. Continue watering until substantial rains fall. Once the soil has been moistened, pre emergent can be sprayed in areas where weeds can be a nuisance.

The last word – RAIN is grace. Rain is the heavens descending to the earth. Without rain there would be no life.

Dear Readers, The Photo Club has held three meetings this year, with the Photo Competition winners as above.

We have chosen the Photo Competition subjects for 2022 and they are as follows , WHEELBARROWS, CLOUDS, THE COLOUR ORANGE, ANIMALS, MYSTERIOUS, DARK HUMOUR, BLACK & WHITE, OIL & WATER, INDUSTRIAL, SET OF 4 PICS OF THE 4 SEASONS,THE UNUSUAL, IN THE STREET. This year 50 % of our photo competition subjects are the same as the Cunderdin Photo Club, this will allow us to compare our photos to those taken by another group of photographers.

We still have learning areas at our meetings & next month we will be revisiting how to take pics of the night sky. We held our last meeting at The Quairading Hotel and liked the idea of having a drink to let the creative juices flow so much, that we will be having our next meeting there.

We had one new member join and like always, invite anybody to join. The cost is $40 per year to join, so you can’t say we are ripping anybody off. Taking photos and entering them in our competition has been a good little past time, in these times of lock down. You don’t need an expensive camera, your mobile phone camera takes a very good photo and 75% of our photo competition pics are taken with a mobile phone. Mobile phone pics are also being entered in many photo competitions world wide and are actually winning competitions.

At Easter time this year the annual Photo Competition will again be held at York and we have six photos entered in this competition by three of our members. This is a state wide competition and in the past Geoff Hall has won first prize at the event. Other things happening at the Photo Club will be unwrapped as the year progresses. At the moment it’s pretty much the same as always, you get to enter two photos in our monthly competition and the only rule is, that they have to be taken within the last 12 months.

Warrior Wellbeing Looking After Ourselves in Busy Times For farmers, seeding and harvest are a couple of extremely busy times of the year. One of the most important things to consider looking after, during these times, is our most valuable resource - us.

Having to complete tasks by a set date imposes time pressure and this may make us take short cuts and if we take short cuts regarding our wellbeing it increases our risk factors dramatically. It is a time when relationships come under pressure, our physical health is ignored, and accidents can happen.

Research into truck crashes by the Truck Crash Research Centre based in South Australia has some thought-provoking outcomes. One of the research outcomes is that most truck accidents (more than 90%) happened on the outwardbound journey of the truck trip. We need to ask ourselves why is this? There are many reasons for this, but primarily it is a combination of being physically tired coming off the holiday break and/or mentally our headspace is not focused on the job at hand, we are not operating in the present.

What us blokes don’t do well is consider the consequences of risk taking - it won’t happen to me. Consequences are something we must live with, so in our seeding and harvest preparations we need to limit our personal risk, and if what we’re planning is an overstretch, reconsider the options.

Anglican Church (St Faith’s) Harris Street OBSERVING HOLY WEEK AND CELEBRATING EASTER DAY Easter Day is coming, that time of new birth in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Preceding it is the most important week in the Christian Year, Holy Week. For the first time in many years the opportunity to fully participate in all its commemorations and celebrations will be available to all residents of, and visitors to, the Avon Valley. Services will take place on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Day at each of the Anglican Churches at Brookton, Beverley, Quairading and York during that week; services for Quairading are below.

In participating in the sequence of services, a person shares in Christ’s own journey from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to the empty tomb on Easter morning. The procession with palms on Palm Sunday is accompanied by the reading of the Passion Narrative, in which the whole story of the week is anticipated.

Maundy Thursday (from mandatum, ‘commandment’) contains a rich complex of themes: humble Christian service expressed through Christ’s washing of his disciples’ feet, the institution of the Eucharist, the perfection of Christ’s loving obedience through the agony of Gethsemane. After keeping vigil (‘Could you not watch with me one hour?’) Thursday passes into Good Friday with its characteristic Dramatic Reading of the Passion and the Veneration of the Cross. The church remains stripped of all decoration until the rising excitement of Easter draws near. In this set of services are preserved some of the oldest texts still in current liturgical use, rehearsing the deepest and most fundamental Christian memories.

Uniting Church Coraling Street This month we are celebrating lent and the gospel readings in Luke centre around Jesus’ teachings that now seem to arouse some opposition to some, thus leading up to the Easter story. However the story this last week was the Prodigal son, a story known by most people even if they do not go to church. It’s a story that to our way of thinking does not make sense yet it has many lessons for us . We have a father who represents God and two sons representing the different way of our actions, one leaves the home to live it up the other stays home The one wastes all he had and decides to come home as a servant. The father welcomes him with open arms and gives a party the other feels hard done by. The lesson for us is that when we go astray we can come back, we need to repent and admit we made a mistake God loves us. We in the Uniting Church invite all people to join us in worship every Sunday.
