RED CARD FOX SHOOT The final tally for the two weekends of the fox shoot was 147 foxes, 8 cats and 107 rabbits. The leading team was “Team Anderson’ - led by Craig. Linden Johnston’s team was second and Joel Hathaway’s third. As a result LCDC will be donating $775 to the RFDS which, combined with two private donations, means the RFDS gets a $1085 donation from the fox shoot.

The next Reconcilation Action Plan Working Group Meeting was planned to be held on 13th May. However due to the Coronavirus restrictions may not go ahead as planned. I will keep you informed nearer to that date.

At a meeting held on Wednesday 18th March, Family Representatives were chosen to represent the Aboriginal Community on to the RAP Committee.

These chosen members will be able to pass recommendations to be presented to the Shire at future meetings.

ANZAC DAY 2020 Quairading’s 101st ANZAC Day 2020 has been cancelled, as have events state wide. However, we will observe the day hopefully in a small and meaningful way. All flags will be flown and wreaths will be placed on the memorial in honour of our local Veterans. A fly over may still take place, this is undecided at this point in time.

We are also in support of the following great idea that has been doing the rounds on social media– go to the end of your driveway at 6am and have the nation line it’s streets and share a minute’s silence, tuned to the ABC offering the national ceremony!

Greetings to all residents and readers of the Quairading “Banksia Bulletin” for the start of the New Year, 2020.

It is a privilege and an honour to prepare a synopsis of Police incidents and report to the community in what is to be the first of many monthly updates from your local police.

Firstly, let me introduce your local police officer’s for 2020.

My name is Senior Constable, Edward (Eddy) DUFFY, and I have been with the WA Police Force for 16+ years, after completing recruit training in 2003, I have served at Rockingham, Kwinana, Mandurah, Wyalkatchem, Cunderdin, Police Rail Unit and recently, the Traffic Enforcement Group 1 (TEG 1) operating on the southern suburbs of the Perth Metropolitan region on both highway patrols and motorcycles.

I arrived here at the beginning of April 2019 and am very fortunate to be able to return to such a good country town after working here in 2007 for a short stint as the Acting Sergeant, Officer in Charge whilst I was stationed at the Cunderdin Police Station.

You may all remember Sergeant, John Hancock, who was born and raised here back in the 60’s and 70’s and returned after many years away to take over the position of Officer in Charge for the past 2 and a half years, 2016 – 2019. It was sad to see him leave, but he is now located in York as the Officer in Charge and I am sure we all wish him well in his new location.

This leads me into introducing our new Officer in Charge, Sergeant, Lindsay (Sarg) COLLETT. Sergeant Collett comes to us from his previous posting as the Officer in Charge at the Yarloop Police Station and has been stationed at a multidude of stations including, Kalamunda, Midland, Forrestfield, Geraldton, Traffic Enforcement Group Perth, Norseman, Leonora, Warburton MPF, Traffic Enforcement Group 2 Midland, Cue, Promotion to Sergeant Cannington Response, Armadale, Belmont, Serving in the WA Police Force for the past 16 years.

Lindsay arrived here in November 2019 and has settled in well with his wife and two boys and is a great asset to our community as he is the typical country copper who is willing to give people a fair go, if they respect each other, respect private and public property and behave in what our society expects as normal behaviour.

With those introductions out of the way, let’s now concentrate on the matters at hand.

Of main concern this year is the recent damage complaints, from both the Shire office and Foodworks Co-Op where there has been damage caused to the fence at the Community Building and the front glass door to the Co-Op. We are working with some nominated persons who are believe to be responsible for these incidents and hopefully have an outcome before this edition is published.

On another note, in regards to the recent funerals held in both Quairading and Tammin over the past month, it was a pleasure to see a lot of our people who were and are affected by the passing of family members, all acting in a very orderly and respectful manner with very minimal interruption to other residents in town.

We are still investigating a number of disorderly behaviour incidents in the early hours of Thursday the 5th of March, which led to complaints from community members. We believe the suspects were visiting from other parts of the state.

Notification is placed in this edition that your local police will be targeting the traffic offences of speeding, seat belts and mobile phone use over the coming months and not to forget those who choose to drink (alcohol) and drive will be stopped and breath tests conducted on all drivers to ensure we keep our roads safe for all users.

On a lighter note, we have a great addition to our local police station with the installation of the three new flag poles on the southern side where we are now able to fly the National, State and Indigenous flag to recognise and pay respects to our local Noongar peoples.

Soon we will be engaging the talents of Mrs Beryl Dick to paint an aboriginal mural on the southern wall of the police station, facing the Quairading Club on Avon Street.

In closing, let me thank those who always seem to be doing the right thing and to those who assist your local police in maintaining a safe and happy environment for us all to live and go about a daily business.

QUAIRADING CREATIVE ARTS SOCIETY President’s Report 2020, by Russell Stacey

We have held our AGM, the Office Bearers are President Russell Stacey, Secretary Peter York, Treasurer Phyliss Marrett.

During the last 12 months our members have continued doing their different types of artwork. We are quiet achievers that make time to start and finish our individual projects. We have continued getting together every Thursday for a 1/2 day of art work at the Quairading CRC Art Space and also do our artwork at home. We welcome any new members to join us.

We went to Beverley for a Christmas party luncheon in 2019, which was paid for by the QCAS as a bonus to members for years of contribution to the QCAS. We had pre booked to have our get together at one of the Beverley Hotels but did not realise till later that we inadvertently went to the other hotel in Beverley. We also visited a Beverley Art shop in the main street, which featured scrap metal welded into various thingys and other art work mediums for sale by another 96 artists.

We have become members of the Southern Regional Art Work Group, which is a regional hub coordination centre to advertise the art work being done in this dedicated zone, based in Narrogin. This group had an open day and requested we sent photos of our members doing their artwork. The pics were displayed on a TV screen slideshow held at the Narrogin open day.

We have planned to have our 2020 Feature Artist Exhibition at the Quairading CRC on the same weekend of this year’s Quairading 100th Ag Show. Peter York will be the feature artist displaying a kangaroo he has nearly finished making from wire mesh and plaster. We will also have supporting artists displaying their artwork. The exhibition will be held on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Blue Tree Project report.

We have instigated a fun time community project of painting trees with blue paint coordinated by QCAS. We have contacted the Blue Tree Project WA and they love our quirky idea of painting a heap of trees all different shades of blue by the whole Quairading community. We are taking any donations and will use this money to provide free paint for the school kids to paint trees blue. If you have any old white paint that you don’t need we can tint this paint a blue colour and use it to paint Blue trees. Some clubs have donated $200 and after painting a tree with blue paint and then tagging that tree as their tree the remaining money will be put towards free paint for the school kids. Jim Gimbel is kindly selling us the paint at cost price for this project. Our main feature Blue tree has been painted and is located in the water in the Pink Lake, with another 35 trees painted further down the road in an area known as the Quairading Blue Trees Project. We have a goal to paint 100 trees before the Quairading 100th Show, at the moment we have 35 trees painted. We request that you ask your kids if they want to paint a tree with Blue paint and contact Russell Stacey for details. We invite everybody to get out and have some fun with a paint brush. For the many clubs in Quairading that we want to paint a tree, it is much easier for us if you ask your own club that you are associated to get out there and paint a tree or get a donation happening.

Archery at the Youth Centre with Noel Stone Last week we had Noel Stone and Dane Bingham from the Bowmen of Wamenusking (BOW) come to the Youth Centre to do Archery with the children.

What a fabulous day!!!!! Every child enjoyed it. Thanks to Noel and Dane for giving up their time to come and show the children, younger and older as well how to shoot at a target. Our winner for the day was Rae-vynn with a score or two 10s and a 9.

PHOTO CLUB NEWS

Written by Russell Stacey (Club Promotion Officer) PHOTO COMPETITION WINNERS MARCH SUBJECT: “Pets” GOLD: Russell Stacey (Gerry) SILVER: Verna Blackburne (War Horse) BRONZE: Russell Stacey (Rooster) At our March meeting the competition subject was pets. It was a simple subject that did not require a big effort to photograph various pets. When entering a pic in any photo competition of your pet, it doesn’t matter how much you adore and love your pet, if it’s not a good photo it won’t get any awards. Also if you love your pet cat and the judges are one of those people that hate cats there might be a slight inclination that some judges just can’t give any votes to your lovable pet cat. Those are some unwritten rules that apply to every photo not just pet pics.

We all had a lot of fun taking pics practising lots of different camera techniques. When taking pics of humans the hero of a portrait for some judges has to be a focus on what the eyes are doing and nothing else matters. With pet pics there are heaps more features to be the hero spot in your pic, like soft droopy ears, fluffy hair, wet noses, puppy dog eyes and the many different angles to take pics of pets.

There is an infinity of all those different colours that pets have that can make your pic awesome and pics can ooze many feelings of emotion creating great pics. It can be unpredictable what a pet will do when taking their photo and can create really engaging portraits. When taking our pics we had to bend, twist and turn, crouch and crawl along the ground to get that perfect composition happening in our pics and don’t stop taking pics when shooting.

This leads onto a massive amount of pics to sort afterwards. We had to wait for our pets to be in the right lighting which is everything in photography.

One bonus was we didn’t have to pay these models for a photo shoot!

Having taken all of our learned ideas gleaned from Photo Club I took a pic of the dog when it jumped on my lap with a mobile phone and it won first place, so after all that explaining it turned out a pretty easy thing to do. My pic was enhanced post production, which means anything done to your photo after taking a photo. I had changed the pic and converted it to a monochromatic pic and put a vignette around the pic, adjusted the clarity and played around with the lighting which took about 5 minutes. Post production of photos also known as POST is very common these days, where as a decade ago it was kinda looked upon as, I am a photographer not a computer wizard who does post production and makes the pics look fake like those dreadful photos of those plastic so called super models. You can spend a lot of time doing post production on any photo, but it doesn’t matter, if you are enjoying your hobby and it doesn’t worry you, then why should it worry anybody else.

Anyways as photography is artwork anybody can have their opinion of your photo when it finally gets picked by yourself to enter in any competition.

We have now at our meetings been using the new big screen TV in the CRC meeting room to display our pics after the voting has been completed. By displaying our pics on the TV we can have an open discussion critiquing everyone’s pics. By using a computer which displays the computer screen on the TV, we can change the way the photo looks by zooming in on the pic as well a other alterations and learn how our pic may have been better, or just leave it the way it was presented by the photographer. The photographer may also say I don’t think my pic needs changing in any way at all and discuss in more detail why their pic was chosen to be the pic entered in our competition out of many other pics they had taken for that months photo subject .

We have come up with an exciting new idea. For those persons who are not Photo Club members we now have a box at the Quairading CRC where anybody can leave photographs, size 6 x 4. Then at our meetings we will separately judge these photos and have a quick discussion just like we do with our own photos of what we think of the pic and how it could be better. You are allowed two pics each month with the subject being the same as what our monthly subject is. The idea is to get you interested in taking pics and having a go at photography. This is for all you persons who keep saying I would like to join the Quairading Photo Club but I am maxed out and just don’t have the time.

On that note taking photos is actually a management issue to slow down, STOP! and take a photo, it’s not that much of a drama in this world of everything being so fast and furious. You all have a mobile phone so you all have a camera with you when you want to shoot a pic and mobile phone pics are winning photo competitions everywhere these days.

The list of photo club subjects for the next 24 months is on our Photo Club facebook page. The next 6 months are, BASED ON A BOOK OR POEM, CLOSE UP, DOOM & GLOOM, HALLWAYS, FEMINITY, OPPOSITES. With the current changes happening with COVID-19, photography is going to become huge worldwide as it can be done in isolation. We have not discussed this at our meetings but stay tuned for maybe Photo Club becoming an online based club that as a bonus may attract you as a new member.

HUMANS OF THE WHEATBELT

Hearing stories and taking a photograph of our humans. Our focus is on disabled people interviewing people, including non-disabled people, in community settings. This is a Wheatbelt Health Network project.

I have lived in Quairading for twenty-six years now and I have to say that I am enjoying my retirement. I was born in England and when I was in my early teens, I began training to compete in The Commonwealth Games. Sadly, my parents moved me away from England when I was fifteen and stopped those dreams dead in their tracks. My family and I moved to Perth in 1969 and eventually I moved to Stradbroke Island in QLD to be close to my sister.

My partner and I decided to move to Quairading mainly because of the price of houses. We drove around some country towns and looked at houses until we found what we both wanted.

Many years ago, I was in a car accident, which prohibited me from working and the trauma of that accident triggered my mental illness. In 1983 I was diagnosed with bipolar and because of this disorder I became involved with The Mental Illness Fellowship of WA. My illness is such a big part of who I am that I wanted to help people to understand that individuals suffering from mental health disorders are not freaks and are functional members of society. Even in the country, education is needed on how to approach people and treat them properly. I do a lot of facilitation for The Mental Illness Fellowship of WA. It helps for me to stand up in front of a lot of people and get my story out. Even if something is scary, you must carry on.

One thing about Quairading is that it is very quiet. When you suffer from a mental illness, it definitely helps to live away from city life.

I once worked as an office manager for Centrelink in Port Hedland and found that to be quite stressful but enjoyable. I even had a stint in the real estate game and found that to be an especially cutthroat industry.

I used to be involved in the CWA in Perth but the monthly travels to Perth began to take their toll on me. I am very proud of what the CWA achieves. It is a wonderful organization where you can form lasting friendships and they do fantastic things for the community that people don’t often see.

These days I love my arts, crafts and cooking. I love to knit and to sew and I build miniature houses out of recycled wood and make my own jewelry. I enter the things that I make into the local shows and I sell a lot of things right here in my opshop. When it comes to cooking, nothing beats my fruit cake.

Meeting my partner and getting married was the happiest moment in my life. I still get right into athletics and a wonderful trip I took was to the Gold Coast where I watched the finals of The Commonwealth Games.

It has been a tough life, especially growing up. I recently had a tragedy which was very hard on me.

Our pet King Charles Cavalier, Ziggy passed away very recently and left a hole in our hearts. He was a rescue dog and he was beautiful.

Two very influential people in my life are my father and Gold Medalist Champion Swimmer Anita Lonsbrough. We spoke when I was younger, and I will never forget her advice about my choices in athletics and swimming.

When I was younger, I was a wild child and if I had any advice to give a young person growing up in today’s times it would be to stay away from drugs and alcohol and follow your dreams.

QUAIRADING DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL NEWS We had a fantastic group of students represent QDHS at the Interschool Swimming Carnival in Cunderdin on Friday 13th March. All students swam beautifully and their behaviour was excellent.

COVID-19 update...

We live in astounding times and I can only imagine measures that were taken during war time and the impacts of those over several years. By the time you read this plans may well have changed!

Thankyou to staff, students, parents and community members for your understanding and patience as many of our school events have been cancelled or postponed to help curb the spread of the Coronavirus. As the situation evolves we continue planning to reduce impact to the core business of our school - strong teaching and learning. We are doing what we can to minimise disruption and to educate our children and help ‘reduce the curve’ – assisting our health services to manage Coronavirus in our community and across the nation. In doing that, we are doing our bit to protect the vulnerable in our community.

When discussing COVID-19, please consider the mental health and wellbeing of children who are around you. Many of the concerns we have as adults may become distressing for children and we want them to feel safe and nurtured as we move through this astounding period in history.

In the event that we have a confirmed case of Coronavirus in the school I will receive direct advice from the WA Health Department’s Chief Health Officer and support regarding a possible closure process, with support and communication materials from the Department of Education’s Coronavirus support team. All families will be immediately contacted and provided with the relevant information. Of course this is not the case currently, school is operating as normal and we continue to educate our community’s children within a connected school community.

Many moons ago, a great vicious beast roamed the land. He was huge with a black shaggy coat, great chest width, bright yellow eyes and a blood red tongue. He had large fangs, sharp claws -like a cat, plus a large sensitive nose to sniff out his prey miles away. He roamed at night! Dogs were his food. Not the Australian Dingo, as it has no scent!

Dogs were scared and formed the dog circle every night with the warmth of a fire in the centre. The Beast did not like fire. They called The Beast ‘Cur’. Sometimes of a night they heard blood curdling screams, a dog being attacked. Closer to the fire they moved.

Within the circle was a little guy from Mexico ‘Chi’, he became ‘The Sage’. For a little dog he had the heart of a lion and needle sharp teeth. He was wise and when he spoke, they listened.

One day just at dusk he was out with his friend, Barry the bulldog- not the fastest dog, when suddenly Cur came out of the scrub to attack, Barry took off, Chi found a hollow log where he could do nothing but watch . When Cur was close to the kill, Barry slid through a rotten smelly carcass and got covered in it. Cur stopped in his tracks, his nostrils flared at the stink, it was over powering. Cur gagged at the stench and then rushed back to the scrub.

Chi came out of his hiding place and went to see how Barry was, Chi liked Barry’s stink and thought what a great way to stop Cur. Back to the circle they went to tell the other doggies about their new idea. So at the circle they all stank but were so happy, with great big slobby grins knowing that Cur couldn't get them.

That is why dogs are so excited when they jump in your car smelling like decay or jobbies BUT if you bathe them, you are wiping off their protective scent and they will run around trying to get it back.

QUAIRADING AQUATIC CLUB What a whirlwind it has been for our swimmers returning back to the pool in 2020 after our summer break!

Mid-February saw ten of our swimmers head over to Corrigin for their annual swim meet. Many of the swimmers had great success with a healthy amount of medals coming home with the kids. I think the most favourite part of the Corrigin Swim Meet is our debriefing session down at the hotel afterwards!

The next weekend saw us hosting our swim meet at home which saw a high level of attendance from surrounding towns. We are very blessed to have the organisational skills of our committee that make these days happen, many thanks must go especially to Claire Gelmi who puts in an enormous amount of work behind the scenes to ensure the day goes off without a hitch! Our kids had a great day in the pool and it was lovely to see the big smiles on the podium as they came up to get their medals-especially for those who were receiving their first ever swim meet medal!

Our club championship day & wind up were held on Thursday 12th March.

A very special presentation was made at the commencement of our wind up. The late Barb Simpson was honoured for her invaluable contributions to our club and a plaque was presented to Barb’s family which will be displayed at the Quairading Memorial Pool in the very near future.

The plaque reads: Dedicated to the memory of Barb Simpson in recognition of her service to the Quairading Aquatic Club Her guidance helped develop persistence and endeavour in young local swimmers for over 30 years March 2020

The following are a few excerpts that were read out on the day: We’d like to recognise a person for her extraordinary contribution to our Club over 30 years Barb, or Mrs Simpson, as some of you may remember her. During Barb’s long association with our Club, she has dedicated her time and effort in numerous ways. Barb was an incredible mentor, coach, parent, time keeper, patron, sponsor and support to anyone involved in the Club.

From looking through the records, here are just some of the things that Barb did to help our club; Starter – 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 , Time keeper – 1999, 2000, Coach – 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, 2015, 2016, Sponsorship – 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, Patron – 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 Above all, Barb was one of the best people you would have ever had the privilege of meeting. Her extraordinary compassion, great warmth and dedication for the Quairading Aquatic Club will always be remembered.

Claire Gelmi, Vice President, Quairading Aquatic Club, 2020 Super Woman, Wonder Woman and Cat Woman are all super heroes, however it is in my opinion that they have missed one special lady out and her name was Barbara Simpson, she certainly needs a cape! Barb was our very own super hero. Her dedication, passion and persistence were one of a kind. The countless steps up and down the pool imparting valuable and precious knowledge whilst supporting every single child, was something magical to see! Barb valued each and every child, there were never any favourites! You needed to work hard and reap rewards, that is how you made Barb proud. She always made our club feel like a little family, always helping, supporting in every possible way she could! This family culture I believe we still carry strong today! Barb absolutely left many clear footprints in our children’s lives, we were super, super lucky to have had a coach, mentor and of course a dear friend. She is truly a well deserving Life member recipient.

It must be said that the most rewarding part of swimming club from the perspective of our volunteers is to see how each individual child improves throughout the season. Whilst we record race times, it is the improvements in stroke performance, the ability to swim a longer distance competently and/or the ability to perform a new stroke that are the main focus of our trainings and these are the achievements that we celebrate from week to week of the season. Our club is evolving in its clientele, now catering for kids as young as five and it is fabulous to see their journey from essentially non-swimmers into capable and confident swimmers that have a love for the water.

As our season comes to a close we must reflect on the successes of our season & those that make it happen. Thank you to the Shire of Quairading for their funding contribution for our weatherproof notice board and for the use of the pool throughout the season.

Thank you to Contract Aquatic Services, especially Trista, for your support of the club.

Finally a massive thanks to the committee, coaches, parents & volunteers of our club- you are the glue that allows our swimming club to thrive!!
