HELLO SEASON 2019!

The Quairading Bulls Football Club and Quairading Belles Netball Club are taking no prisoners as their pre season wraps up and they prepare for the real season with Round 1 kicking off on Saturday 6th April.

The season was officially launched with an earlier-than-usual Jumper Presentation held on Saturday 9th

The boys had a run in a scratch match during the (sweltering hot) arvo and then each team—reserves, league and netball— were acknowledged after the 70+ strong crowd dined al fresco on the grass with BBQ steaks and the best ever smorgasbord of salads we’ve seen (thanks to all who donated and brought something along!).

Keep an eye out for fixtures coming soon and get along to a game or two. If football and netball aren’t your jam, our local ladies hockey club will hit off pretty soon plus golf and baddy are just around the corner. Spoilt for choice or what?!

FROM THE EDITOR I think someone is playing a little bit of silly buggers on us with this weather. We’re a third done with autumn and I ain’t seen no autumnal changes yet! There are still blowflies, the air con is still running and 11 the ground still looks dry and dusty. Yah the cold change and rainy days will come, but like, when?!

11 16 March went by in a flurry. We kept ourselves busy here at the Quairading CRC with a few events and a boat load of grant writing (to 16 fund future projects and events).

16 We held our third annual Bike Week WA event which was yet again a 16 great success. I handed the reigns of event management over to 16 Tamara this year (with absolutely zero anxiety or sleepless nights on either of our parts!) and she blew it right out of the water! We changed 18 up the event concept and held it on a different day of the week – for 18 fear of becoming stale. The change came with a new set of pros and cons of course, but I applaud Tamara and the band of merry helpers 18 she assembled from across the community for an EXCELLENT job done.

18 Just this week, 23 local club representatives – and a couple of blow ins 18 for good measure – packed our meeting room for a three hour, brain 20 intensive workshop with the delightful and incredibly knowledgeable Michelle from Clubs WA. We chatted all things Incorporated 22 Associations Act, Liquor Control Act and the impending rules of 22 association (aka constitution) update deadline! If you’re on office bearer of a local club, and haven’t updated and lodged your new rules 24 yet – you should panic. But don’t panic, spin out and give up – channel 26 that panic into locating your current Constitution, reading it and then coming and seeing us to let us help you get it sorted. We’re becoming 26 well-versed with the requirements of the new rules having helped lots 26 of clubs already, so we’re not panicking one bit.

28 With the expert curation ability of our VOLUNTEER Chairperson, Jo 31 Hayes, we’ve got an excellent afternoon planned for those of you involved in farming enterprises, on Tuesday 9th April. Farm Office 40 Affairs is legit a great opportunity for all y’all farmers (young, old, 40 male, female, novice, expert, clueless etc) to learn something new about the goings on of the business HQ – or a great chance to step out 40 of the dusty paddock and dip your toes into the refreshing office 49 waters. Check out all the info and list of totally casual speakers on pages # and #. Be quick to register though, we’re receiving lots of out 50 of town interest for this event and we’d hate for our locals to miss 50 out—ya snooze, ya lose!

50 We’ve also still got room for a couple more people to upgrade their truck license in early April – get in touch ASAP if you want to get it done before seeding, this might be the only opportunity to do so locally this year.

Lastly, footy and netball start NEXT WEEKEND! See you on the sideline in Beverley on Saturday 6th April (or at the bull ring the following Sunday). YAY! What is dementia?

Dementia is the term used to describe the symptoms of a large group of illnesses which cause a progressive decline in a person’s functioning. It is a broad term used to describe a loss of memory, intellect, rationality, social skills and physical functioning. Dementia can happen to anybody, but it is more common after the age of 65.

In 2018, there is an estimated 436, 366 Australians living with dementia. The number of people with dementia is expected to increase to 589,807 by 2028 and 1,076,129 by 2058.

We would like to encourage a Dementia Friendly Community. A dementia-friendly community is a city, town or village where people with dementia are understood, respected and supported.

Alzheimer’s Society is here for anyone affected by dementia.

How can I communicate better with a person living with dementia?

If you have good “people skills” you already have much of what you need to provide a good service to people living with dementia. Kindness, patience, common sense, respect, avoiding stress, using good communication skills and a smile go a very long way! People living with dementia say that some key principles of good communication are to: • Treat the person with dignity and respect.

• Don’t question the diagnosis; the symptoms of dementia are not always obvious.

• Talk to the person with dementia, instead of their carer, family member or friend.

• Don’t prejudge their level of understanding.

• Make eye contact and speak clearly. Use short sentences HOW CAN WE IMPROVE? with one idea at a time.

• Avoid jargon.

Free measles vaccinations for adults Media Statement released Tuesday 26th March 2019 Western Australians born in or after 1966 who are not fully vaccinated against measles can receive a free vaccine through a new State Government funded program.

The number of measles cases in WA has been increasing in recent years, with the cause linked to international travel. Today's announcement comes ahead of the Easter break and school holidays, with many families planning travel overseas.

Of the 36 measles infections last year, nearly threequarters (73 per cent) occurred among people aged 20 to 49 years of age.

People not sure if they have had two doses of measles vaccine, should see their doctor, immunisation provider or travel health immunisation clinic for the free vaccination. While the vaccine is free, there may be a fee for the consultation.

Quairading sub centre – Caring for our Kids!

Sub centre open morning – Wednesday 3rd April On Monday 25th March 2019 St John Ambulance – Quairading sub centre launched the initial stages of our 2019 ‘Caring for our Kids’ awareness campaign. In the morning, Drew Richardson (our Community Paramedic) and John Hards spoke to a group of playgroup parents at Little Rainmakers Childe Care Centre. Following this, the parents and their children enjoyed morning tea at Quairading sub centre. In the afternoon, the Quarras, grandparents of many of the playgroup children, also had the opportunity to discuss with Drew and John elements of the sub centre’s goals for 2019 These activities were the beginning of an awareness campaign which St Johns in Quairading is in conducting in 2019, also we hope in conjunction with local branches of WA Police, WA Country Health and the Emergency Fire and Emergency Services, with first aid and safety being the focus.

Later in 2019, we hope to also address some of the issues faced by our older children, including road and driver safely, drug and alcohol awareness and first aid principles.

This initiative will include first aid training opportunities and resources offered to teachers and carers of children in the community. Our goal is to play a small part in producing positive outcomes for our children now, through safety and first aid, and in the future, through awareness and education.

All are welcome to come to our next monthly ‘open morning’ on Wednesday 3rd April at the Quairading sub centre from 9.00am – 11.00am to learn more about this initiative, discuss any query you may have regarding the services provided by St Johns or simply to have a ‘cuppa’ and a chat.

KIMCHI? If you are a Great Southern ABC radio listener you may have caught Janet Robertson, business owner of Nourishabley in Beverley, being interviewed about the Kimchi Workshop she was to be delivering that morning in Quairading.

Janet and her daughter Michelle, visited us in September last year and delivered a workshop we called Fermenting for Health, with all of the participants making and taking home their own sauerkraut as well as sampling all of the bubbly tangy home-grown fermented samples Janet brought along. The workshop was so well received (as was her short demos at last year’s Quairading Ag Show) we organised to have her come again, with the focus on Kimchi.

Kimchi is a Korean staple, aside from being in vogue, it is a nutritious and flavoursome powerhouse. Much like sauerkraut it is a salted and fermented vegetable, generally made with napa cabbage, daikon radish and Korean chilli powder, gochugaru.

The side dish is extremely versatile though and can be made with just about any vegetables and tailored to your tastes with your preference of herbs and spices, salt is a must.

On top of the Kimchi making we also discussed and tasted dairy Kefir and water Kefir. Our weekend stay in the Central Wheatbelt. Quairading Caravan Park and Cottage (Quairading, is derived from the Aboriginal word ‘Kwirading’ meaning the home of a small bush kangaroo) Quairading is a beautiful town nestled in the Central Wheatbelt of Western Australia, just 167km east of Perth on the York-Quairading Road. You can find the Caravan Park and Cottage on McLennan Street. Caravan Park. Couldn’t find a fault that was blaringly obvious other than if you (like we were) located on the front sites, being paved I was unable to secure the awning when it was out. (No Biggy) Price is good, but we would have been happy to pay a little more if it granted entry into the pool next door for each day we were booked.

Peter the caretaker is a top bloke who goes out of his way to ensure you have an enjoyable visit. He popped in to the park (after hours) to check on everyone after a large gust of wind had past through the town.

Is it an Over Nighter, Short or Long Stay?

You can say it provides all three options for you depending on what you are planning on doing. We did a Friday Night and Saturday Night as we adventured in a rough 50km circle from Quairading on the Saturday.

We would use the park again to stay for longer as I would push our adventures out to 150km radius to look at those other attractions within the region each day.

Kid Friendly?

This question is hard to answer for us as our boys (9 and 11) are really easy going kids that are happy to just go with the flow. The CP has walking access to the local sporting ground which has a large AFL oval and a basic play set at the Club house. The Local pool is very kid friendly with a water park containing shallow pool with water spouts, water cannons and one of those mushroom looking things that cascade water everywhere.

Over all we think the park ticks the minimum amount of boxes with regards to kiddies.

BIKIN’ AROUND THE BUSH True to his Law, Murphy decided that Tuesday, 19 March 2019, a day when we would be asking people to ride their bikes up hill in the bush, would be 37oC. Luckily for us, most of our participants were under the age of 10 and this kind of weather isn’t much of a deterrent.

Luckily for us too that most can be placated by incentives such as complimentary hats, sunscreen, bicycle tools, first aid kits and snakebite bandages.

Then there is the not to be underestimated, almighty drawing power of a sausage sizzle!

All of these extras and the smooth running of the event were made possible through Bike Week WA, Department of Transport, Lotterywest and Healthway, St John Ambulance- Quairading Sub Branch, Quairading Nature Reserve, Quairading Golf Club, Quairading CRC committee, staff, parents and community volunteers. It takes a village to run a Bike Week WA event!

Thank you so much to the entire community for supporting the event, we hope to bring you another Bike Week WA Event in 2020.

QUESTION OFFERS OF EASY MONEY Some scammers will approach you with offers to make easy money, perhaps by investing in their company or product with little to no risk, or by offering you a 'loan'.

To check the legitimacy of someone who makes you an offer, ask them:  What is your name and what company do you represent?

DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH Always do your own research on a company before you deal with them. Check whether company is real by calling their publicly listed phone number. Don't rely on the information they give you in emails or over the phone find this information separately (via an internet search or phone book). This is the most important check you should do as scammers can impersonate licensed companies and give you a real company's credit licence number to appear legitimate.

Next, check if they are listed on ASIC's list of companies you should not deal with. If they are not on the list, there are other checks you can do, including checking if they have an Australian financial services (AFS) licence, or if they are on the list of fake international regulators.

If you think it might be a scam, do not deal with them and report them to ASIC. Protect yourself and your devices from potential scammers. Hang up the phone, delete the email, text, or social media message if you think it looks even vaguely suspicious.

Be wary of unexpected telephone calls Putting your name on the Do Not Call Register will remove your details from telemarketing phone lists, but, it won't stop scammers from phoning you as they do not follow the rules set by government.

In 2017, the ACCC's Targeting Scams report revealed that scammers use the phone 40% of the time to trick people. If you receive a phone call out of the blue, be very wary of the caller. They may be impersonating a well-known company or request remote access to your computer to 'stop the scammer'. If this happens, hang up immediately.

GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk Well here we are into the second month of autumn and still no rain and where as the broad acre farmers among you may be rejoicing you may also spare a thought for those among us on tank or even dam water. If these don’t get replenished soon, things could get ugly. I say that because ugly, is the way we are used to looking at our summer gardens, although in the normal course of events it is possible to have native plants which are both drought hardy and beautiful at the same time. However, even these most hardy of plants need water sometime.

And have you ever noticed that the water that falls from the sky is always much more effective and beneficial than that which is delivered by hand or sprinkler. Also spare a thought for the microbial life which keeps your soil alive, without moisture these microbes have to retreat further and further into the subsoil until they have nowhere else to go and die and when that happens then the soil becomes lifeless and useless. But being a gardener also means being an optimist, it will rain soon; think about it, if you were not an optimist why would you plant a tree that you have no chance of seeing as a mature specimen.

Plant of the Month When a plant or tree is flowering in these conditions then one must give it credit for not only surviving but also for performing the most fundamental job that is required of any plant worth having in your garden and that is of giving you joy and colour in trying times. My Banksia prionotes is doing just that! This small tree flowers for over three months and holds its flowers very well. Its upright form makes it an attractive structural feature in the garden. Banksias are only found in Australia; they were named after Joseph Banks the famous botanist and are from the Proteaceae family. They come in many forms, from groundcovers to shrubs to quite tall trees.

Banksia hybrid Giant Candles is a well known groundcover form which grows very well in the Wheatbelt as is the Hairpin Banksia which grows into a manageable shrub.

Most of the Banksias have orange flowers but there are varieties available in almost every colour. B. rosserae has a yellow flower and B. coccinea has a red flower and others can be white, pink and even pale green. Being from the Proteaceae family Banksias don’t tolerate fertilizers which have phosphorus in them so only use fertilizers which are specifically made for native plants.

Harvest – we have just recently finished picking the final stone fruit from the orchard which were the Yellow Queen peaches. They were delicious if a little small because of the lack of water. The Jonathon apples have also been small but very, very crunchy and tasty. The next variety of apple the Pink Lady will be ready later this month. We still have grapes on the vines and we are looking forward to our first crop of Pistachios.

Things to do – rejuvenate garden beds getting the soil prepared for the seedlings which you will put in after these last gasps of this never ending summer are gone.

Build up the soil with compost and well rotted animal manure keeping it moist until you’re ready to put in the seedlings or young plants. It is a good idea to start planting before the soil cools down too much because the roots of young plants establish much more quickly when the soil is still warm. So it’s a bit of a balancing act not too soon when plants may be sizzled not too late when their roots are stunted from the soil being too cold. Keep an eye on the weather forecasts. Fertilise all your plants and lawn so that everything is ready for the cooler months ahead.

Thanks to everyone who purchased our calendar. They got spread all around the world.

By purchasing our calendar it enables us to have just enough money to make calendars for 2020.

We got lots of comments about the comparison photos that we did in the 2019 calendar and how creative the way the old black & white photos and present day photos were joined together.

Thanks to Nicole Harwood for doing all that fancy work joining the photos together.

We have had 3 meetings already this year and have organised what we will be doing during 2019. Our monthly photo competition subjects this year will be: ruins, at the markets, bottles, seascapes, bare feet, square, feathers, reflections in glass, pairs, back alleys, peeling paint, statues, the colour green, time piece. The most stimulating part of Photo Club is making these subjects interesting and how each member can make the monthly subject into a great photo. We are slowly learning to take your camera with you a lot more than we used to, which is one way of not missing out on taking a photo when the opportunity presents itself.

The Photo Club has announced a new trophy which will be for the overall best photo of the year. The photos that are displayed in the Quairading Co-op window are the photos that have been entered in our monthly photo competitions. At the end of the year the photo that gained the most points at our monthly meetings then becomes the winner of this new trophy. There is at a guess about 150 photos entered in the competition during the year, so it ain’t easy to win. The first person to get their name on this trophy was Janet Hall and her photo will also now be displayed at the Quairading CRC for 12 months until the next yearly winner is announced (and pictured below) We also have the competition for who gained the most amount of points during the year for our monthly photo competition. David Whyte was the 2018 winner. For his efforts he gets the very esteemed bragging rights of being a pretty cool dude!!!!! And being the undisputed heavy weight champion, world’s best photographer for the year 2018.

We will again be having some members enter in the photo competition at York coming up at Easter time which a few years ago Geoff Hall won the prize for best colour photo.

We meet once a month on the 2nd Tuesday at the Quairading CRC Meeting Room at 7:00pm.

What a busy first couple of months we have had back at The Little Rainmakers. We are so happy to be back and have missed all of our children over the Holidays.

At the Centre we observe children’s interests and development to assist us with our programming. This past couple of months we have been focusing on fairy tales, fine motor skills, healthy food and colour recognition.

The children have shown a lot of interest in Humpty Dumpty since coming back so we used this as an opportunity for the children to practice their fine motor skills. The children participated in an activity which involved them trying to stick Humpty back together again. We then moved onto fairy tales.

The children listened to Little Red Riding Hood and discussed what they would pack in a picnic basket, which then led us onto a discussion about healthy foods.

The children were also observed naming colours during play. We had a week dedicated to colour recognition. The coloured spaghetti was a huge hit with the children and they loved squishing it all in their hands….they may have also enjoyed eating it all!

QUAIRADING DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL Music at Q.D.H.S. For many years now Quairading has been lucky enough to be a part of the Instrumental School of Music. When students are at the end of Year 5 they sit an entrance exam for Year 6. The students do not need to have any prior knowledge of reading music. The test relies on students being able to hear the difference in pitch (high/low) and hear where a rhythm changes.

This year we have eight Year 6 students participating. Each Monday they have a lesson with their instrumental teacher in Perth via the internet. We wish them all the best for this year.

The SIM program is provided through the Department’s specialist music school in Perth and it supports our Music program here at school, as well as providing ‘extension’ in Music for these students.

YEAR 1 AND 2 Term 1 has been very busy for our wonderful students in our Year 1/2 class. Apart from learning, working hard in class and completing assessments, our students enjoyed the recent QDHS swimming carnival. Although a little chilly in the morning, everyone including the parents and carers enjoyed the comradeship and competitiveness of our students. “Well done!” to the whole school for a wonderful carnival and congratulations to the winning faction “Green”

Recently in Numeracy we have enjoyed making patterns and then discovering the relationship between patterns and skip counting.

QUAIRADING AQUATIC CLUB Another great season end!

Another Swimming Club season has come to an end and although we are ready for a rest, I think we are all elated at the successes we have witnessed from our kids this season. It is such a rewarding sport in being able to see each child’s individual improvements throughout the season.

Our membership numbers are holding steady with 30 members aged from 6 through to 13, although we do tend to lose a few at the commencement of the New Year. Attendance at both Monday trainings and Thursday time trials has remained strong throughout the season.

On Sunday February 17th, we had 6 of our swimmers travel to Corrigin to compete in the Corrigin Annual Swim Meet. The weather was great and our swimmers did very well competing in both individual and team events and they brought home an abundance of medals and ribbons.

Our own annual club meet was held on Sunday 24th February. We had a massive 125 swimmers register, with 31 locals taking to the pool. Our locals really know how to bring the day together with parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles & siblings stepping up to lend a hand. As this day is our only club fundraiser it is such a fantastic effort. Swimmers continued to set new highs with lots of medals coming to the home team and lots of our records being lifted to the next level.

Our Championship Day and wind up were held on Thursday 14th March. This year saw Sarah Hadlow recognised for her ongoing efforts and contributions to our swimming club though a life membership. Sarah has been involved in the Quairading Aquatic Club for more than a decade. Throughout the years of her own children’s involvement in the club, Sarah held numerous committee positions and a coaching role and has continued in the role of coach over recent years. Her knowledge and expertise is invaluable to our club and has greatly contributed to our ability to provide the community with the service we provide through our club.
