FROM THE EDITOR Thanks to everyone who helped with or attended either of our ripper March events, being Women’s Business on the 8th and Tour de Quairading on the 18th. Both were very fun and major successes; it’s rare to experience both aspects in event management so for that we’re very grateful and enthused!

While our community events are understandably the most promoted, we have all sorts of other balls in the air here at the Quairading CRC. Every day we’re helping customers with new design and print jobs, assisting them with different life challenges and putting them in touch with the right people, collating and sharing local information both within our community (via the Banksia Bulletin and The Passion Sheet) and abroad through various networks, scouring the internets for new funding sources to help bring ideas to life, looking for new ways to help out local business and economy, managing room bookings, signing up gym members and regularly helping with your ever-interesting “technical difficulties” (one of which LITERALLY just came through the door as I am writing this). Plus the never ending list of admin duties required to run a successful business; despite being a not-for-profit organisation.

In recent months, the list has had the addition of “campaign like crazy and try to stop the State Government from ripping 40% (or more) out of our annual service contracts”. A potential and uncertain change like this is very hard to plan for and despite occupying a fantastic facility and being a very efficient and focussed Community Resource Centre (hell yes I’m tooting our own trumpet) - there’s no guarantee we’ll escape this proposed funding cut.

There are things you can do to TRY and stop them though. Come along to our Open House on Thursday 5th April from 5pm—or get in touch at any time—sign the petition on our counter urging for the cuts to be reversed and/or write a Letter of Support to Minister MacTiernan detailing how a funding cut and service reduction of your local CRC will affect you. If you’re not actually sure how it may affect you, this is a great reason to pop in on the 5th!

THE PASSION SHEET EVENTS SAUSAGE SIZZLE Saturday 31 March the Easter Bunny will be visiting our local Coop. The local fire brigade will also be there so come on down and grab a sausage for $3 while your kiddies have some fun with the Easter Bunny and get some Easter eggs at the same time.

JIGSAW SWAP Tuesday 3 April, 10am at Golden Grain Bakery & Café. Are you interested in swapping jigsaw puzzles with someone else? Bring a puzzle (in it’s box) and have a cuppa and chat. IS WORRY MAKING YOU SICK? When we are presented with an illness, injury or a diagnosis we were not prepared for, we can begin to worry.

This worrying can cause us to constantly be in a state of concern about ours or a loved one’s health. Sometimes this worry can dramatically interfere with all aspects of our lives causing us to be in a constant state of concern about everything.

Constant worrying can be pervasive and lead to new problems such as stress, insomnia or depression. It can also strain relationships with family and friends, cause problems at work or interfere with the ability to perform daily tasks. This stress and worrying can be debilitating and impact upon many facets of a person’s life.

If you feel overwhelmed and need to talk to someone to find a way to “not worry”, then please come and see our Doctor. 250g sweet potato, sliced 250g potato, sliced 1 tsp olive oil 1 onion, thinly sliced 2 cup baby spinach leaves 3 eggs, beaten 2 tbs Parmesan cheese, grated 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

Healthy tip!

1. Preheat grill.

2. Boil potato for 4-5 minutes until tender, or microwave on HIGH (100%) in a covered dish with 1 tablespoon water for 5-6 minutes, stirring after 3 minutes. Drain well.

Still hungry? Try a side of salad or vegies before going for a second serve.

3. Heat oil in a non-stick frypan, add onion and cook for 2 minutes until golden. Add potato, toss to combine and brown.

4. Stir in spinach and stir-fry until wilted and moisture has evaporated.

5. Mix eggs, cheese and nutmeg in a small bowl and pour into pan. Cook over low heat until set.

6. Place under hot grill for 2 minutes to brown the top.

We have set up a storage folder at the Quairading CRC to collect photos electronically.

We have the annual York Photo Awards competition coming up during Easter. I have entered a photo in the monochromatic section, and it will probably get 1st place. Last year Geoff Hall won first prize in one of the 3 sections. Geoff Hall’s photo was used this year and put on the invitations for the 2018 competition.

Can I remind you that the Quairading Ag Show also has a photo competition and we would like to see lots of photos displayed at this year’s show.

The photo club will again be running a competition for best portrait photo at the show.

The winner of this portrait photo will be voted using the people’s choice way of voting.

The photo is then mounted onto a trophy and displayed at “photo club corner” at the Quairading Co-op.

HACC HAPPENINGS Home and Community Care On Thursday 22 February we took the ladies to Corrigin Hotel where we were joined by Tammy, Elaine Hadlow’s daughter. As Elaine’s birthday was coming up Tammy surprised her with a Birthday Cake which was absolutely delicious (I want the recipe!). This followed an amazing meal which the ladies all agreed they could recommend highly.

Thursday 8 March we stayed at the CRC where we pampered the ladies with a foot spa, pedicures and manicures! Dorothy made the comment she was in seventh heaven, especially when I gave her a pedicure. Annette Webb said a few times, ‘This is fun Tracey!’ We had a lovely lunch together and the ladies really enjoyed their day. I’ve promised to do it again soon.

Thursday 22 March we welcomed Margaret Hinkley to our little group. We all paid a visit to the Cunderdin Museum which was very entertaining with the ladies all taking interest in different aspects of the museum. Margaret went for a walk through the tunnel. Elaine, Dorothy and Margaret joined me on the train and Annette joined me in the simulator of the Meckering Earthquake. Once again it was a fabulous day.

Our next outing is going to be to the Rose Garden in Meckering. It is a memorial to the earthquake so if there are any HACC clients who wish to join us please phone Phil Nomnus or Tracey Patton on 9645 2222.

CARE PACKAGES FOR THE TROOPS: A community initiative from Quairading Book Post

uairading Book Post is supporting the sending of care packages to the Australian troops deployed overseas for Anzac Day. If you would like to be involved, you can bring your donations into the post office and when we receive enough donations we will package them up and send the packages to the troops from the Quairading community.

Suggestions of things to donate, for both men and women.  Toiletries: Deodorant (non aerosol) shaving cream (non aerosol), talcum powder, BB Cream or Curash, disposable razors, shower gel, lip balm.  Food: Instant noodles, biscuits, lollies, small tinned consumables, Non-perishable food such as peanut butter, packet soups, vegemite in tube, muesli bars, Tim Tams.  Other ideas: Magazines, puzzle books, DVDs, letters of support.

The Shire of Quairading has made a local law relating to Animals, Environment and Nuisance.

The purpose of the local law is to provide for the regulation, control and management of animals, and the prevention of environmental damage and nuisances within the district.

The effect of the local law is to establish the requirements with which any person keeping animals, or undertaking activities that have the potential to impact the environment or create nuisance must comply with.

A copy of the local law may be inspected at or obtained from Shire of Quairading Administration Office, 10 Jennaberring Road Quairading, WA 6383 between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.

The Local Law will come into operation and effect immediately upon its gazettal.

THERMO TERRYLE More accolades for our local Thermomix Queen!

In 2015 our reward trip was to the Gold Coast, 2016 was Sydney with opening night at the Opera House; that was a very special night. In 2016 I also achieved the elite Thermomix trip to Las Vegas. This was the most amazing trip so far, Stephen joined me in Las Vegas after and we hired a car and drove from Las Vegas to San Francisco to Los Angeles, seeing the most amazing sights in between.

March 2017 I headed off to Auckland where I was awarded top recruit for WA in 2016. September 2017 I achieved the next elite trip to Lake Como in Italy, wow so much beauty, so very spoilt by Thermomix and so much information and training (and eating good food).

So our latest incentive trip was to Perth, bringing the Thermomix party back home to where it all began back in 2001. I was super excited for this trip as I was ready to not have to fly anywhere but also I knew I was on track to be rewarded for 500 Thermomix sales. My goal was to finish in the top 5 leaders in Australia so Stephen could come along and celebrate with me. Unfortunately I finished 6th in Australia so he didn’t get to come.

I was so lucky to have a limo come out to Quairading and pick me up for the trip to Perth, we had opening night at Optus Stadium, just 400 Thermomix consultants and a magic light show. Last Thursday 22nd March, we had 22 swimmers participate in the Rotary E-Club Swim. This involved students and adults raising money for the Wheatbelt Childhood Literacy Program which focusses on support for reading programs for Pre-Primary and Year 1 students in the Wheatbelt.

The swim was a non-competitive event which both children and parents were encouraged to participate in.

arch has been a busy month in the library with our annual Easter colouring competition receiving lots of fabulous entries. Plus you may have seen a photograph on our Facebook page of the Easter Bunny sneaking into the Post Office! We have also been celebrating dinosaurs in the children’s section. Each month we will be celebrating a new subject for kids.

HARRISON’S BALLET FUND Big raffle results

T

hank you so much for all the generous support that was given to Harrison, by way of supporting the Raffle that was held from Monday 19th March to the 23rd of March at the Co-op.

Our first thank you must go to Alison Caporn, who approached us with the idea of a raffle last year to support Harrison with travel costs associated with getting him to Melbourne for specialised ballet training with The Australian Ballet School. Alison did an amazing job of sourcing prizes, and organising a roster of fabulous people to sell tickets at the Co-op throughout the week – Carol Geddes, Shirley Cowcill, David and Lyn White, Rowlie Mellor, Kevin and Beth Simpson, Dorothy Hayes and Joy Arbusti. Thank you to you all for donating your time. The support of the Co-op staff was fabulous, as they patiently stepped around our table of ticket sellers!

The amount just astounds me! Last year Harrison was also the recipient of a generous donation from the Shire of Quairading of $250, to assist with his Interstate Training.

A committee of supporters has formed to oversee that Harrison gets all the assistance he can get in accessing elite dance training. They have plans in the future for a quiz night, and an old fashioned High Tea! A Facebook Page has been set up too, ‘Harrison’s Ballet Fund’ to keep everyone updated with what might be happening on Harrison’s dance journey. HARRISON JACOB TOMPSETT WOODCOCK March 2018: A Dance Biography to Date!

H

arrison began dance classes at the age of six (2014) with Rural Dance School in Quairading, an outreach dance programme provided by Mrs Lani McGeady, Principal of the Toodyay Ballet School (TBS) to rural Wheatbelt communities. He began learning Jazz, Acro and Ballet, and at the end of year concert he was awarded a Full Scholarship to Toodyay Ballet School (and Quairading Rural Dance) to help with the costs associated with travelling there twice a week, and receiving more specific tuition from Miss Lani.

12 girls from a group of over 200! He was required to travel to Perth for rehearsals weekly at first, then with more frequency leading up to the performance. He was taught

by Jayne Smeulders, and Craig Lord Sole, (Ballet Master at WA Ballet), and had the privilege of working and performing with the WA Ballet company of dancers at His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth, for 14 performances, in what has been their most successful season. Over 22, 000 people came to see the Nutcracker.

At around 14 years of age he may be invited to audition for the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne, if he continues to work hard and progress. There are huge costs associated with these classes – an individual class costs around $80, and weeklong workshops are upwards of five hundred dollars – and then there is accommodation and flights.

For 2017 we began travelling to Toodyay three times a week to enable more ballet training, and Harrison added Lyrical to his repertoire.

He studied and trained for two ballet exams, and passed Grade Three with a mark of 100/100, and for Grade Four received 97/100.

He also received an Honourable Mention for the WA State Medal Test for Grade Four Cecchetti Ballet. In 2017 Harrison also began taking part in State Dance Competitions, travelling to Perth and Mandurah to compete, learning solo routines, and being part of two trios.

strength and skill set as a dancer, not because it is a fore gone conclusion that he will be a dancer as an adult, but because if he wishes to be we need to invest the time and training and money to enable the choice when he is older.

At 10 it is hard to know if this is what he will do for the rest of his life, but we must invest in and develop his potential now. The cost of fuel, car maintenance, classes, uniforms, shoes, costumes, travel, accommodation all fall to his father, as my job revolves around enabling him to access all the opportunities. So this is why we are fundraising.

This meant more travel for extra lessons, and added costs for competitions – some of them are quite expensive to enter. He also performed at the Merredin Agricultural Show, and at the Beverly Rural Dance Concert, and at the Quairading Rural Dance Concert.

Performing in front of his home town crowd was both scary and exhilarating. Being asked to dance at the Toodyay Concert in his demi trio with Clare and Brooklyn Caffell (Tammin) was also another proud moment for him, although receiving the Shirly Ploog Perpetual Ballet Trophy for the Performer with the most pleasing personality (best performer) was one of the highest honours that he could receive at Toodyay. At 10 years of age, he is one of the youngest to receive it, and his name joins a very talented collective of Toodyay Ballet School dancers, including Shaylee Mills, a former Toodyay dancer who heralds from Quairading too.

2018 sees us travelling to Toodyay four times a week for classes. Harrison is now doing 17 classes, learning multiple solos, trios, and troupe performances, to be taken to competitions and shows. He is developing his PAGE 47

I

wouldn’t normally ascribe myself as a morose or masochistic individual but, for some reason I decided the month of March looked too bright and further deprivation was needed in addition to my shopping ban. So I have self-imposed a 1 month abstinence from alcohol, I will be swapping binge drinking for binge sobriety.

Premature congratulations seem to come naturally to me and less than a week in I fancied myself an accomplished teetotaller. Midpoint of this virtuous undertaking however, the ‘mid-week- most -night’ red wine habit I’d diligently worked to establish was niggling to be reinstated and that’s the part that vexes me most, I do not appreciate this developing reliance.

I went into this dry month knowing that there would never be an ‘ideal’ time to do it, there was sure to be many an occasion that called for celebration, like Wednesdays for example, but I’d made a start and so I decided I’d trudge on. I was not thwarted by my first hurdle, a long weekend, but I do have another looming.

Thankfully for me this one straddles a new full bodied, aromatic, velvety tannin permitted month.

What have I gained from my Parched March experience? Well I didn’t do it for an organised cause, although I do advocate these, or to influence any current negative drinking cultures but there has to be some point right!?

Obviously, there’s the lack of hangovers (five Saturday and 4 Sunday mornings fresh and spritely to be precise) and I’ve probably saved a few hundred dollars that “theoretically” should be chilling in my bank account, after all, there will be no shopping sprees to reward myself. I might have lost a kilo but this is sure to be negated come post Easter sales. I haven’t noticed any improvements in sleep either but I don’t think you can expect too much from such a short term experiment.

What I have discovered is that I am capable of socialising without having to endure the dry mouth, throbbing head and insatiable appetite for grease that normally post cedes it and that maybe one day there is hope (possible but not probable) that I can become one of those mystical ‘responsible drinkers’ #adultingprofesh. I actually noticed that foregoing a drink when out socialising wasn’t as hard as I thought but stopping myself from pouring a glass and watching Frasier come 6pm on a weekday is my Achilles heel. I also realise I just admitted to the reading audience of the Banksia Bulletin that I am a Frasier fan sans any lip loosening alcoholic agent, and I soberly stand by it.

All that’s left now is to decide how else I can rob myself of pleasure next month? No sugar, no coffee, no will to live…

What a busy month we had last month at the Little Rainmakers!

At the beginning of the month the children learnt their shapes using our new Magnatiles and participating in other fun shape activities, such as making a shape fox.

Dinosaurs are a big hit here at the moment, so we had a whole week dedicated to them. The children loved the sensory bin we made, especially our frozen dinosaur eggs. The children also watched some Hi-5 Dinosaur songs and danced around the room.

The babies have been climbing everything this month, so we used this opportunity to help them develop their gross motor skills and co-ordination using our large foam obstacle course. The older children participated in games to develop their physical skills such as, the outside obstacle course, holding hands whilst trying to climb through a Hula Hoop without letting go of each other and throwing bean bags into Hula Hoops.

QUAIRADING BOWLING CLUB Geeeeeeeeeeez…………!

W

oe. Woe .Woe. Once again the lads got the Quairawobbles and stumbled and fell at the final hurdle. For the Red boys it was another disappointing result in a Grand Final. Playing Kellerberrin at Kellerberrin the boys put up a spirited performance only to go down by 5 shots. Five bloody shots! Quairading was in the game right to the wire but unfortunately weren’t able to find that little bit required to bring home the bacon. Congratulations to Keller. They are a very strong side and it took their best to bowl us over.

And to achieve what we did without one of our best bowlers was a tribute to the club.

Bill Fraser was unable to play due to an illness and his skill was missed on the green.

Scuff is one of the best bowlers in the East Avon league so it was obvious the side was going to miss his presence. We wish him well. However, Rod Simpson stepped into the breach and did a terrific job skippering Bill’s team only to go down by a few shots.

Congratulations to Colin Hayes on winning the QBC singles championship. Chook beat Stephen Bartlett in the final to take out his 10th singles title. A most remarkable achievement. He also went on to win the East Avon league Champion of Champions.

Col Hayes’ team (Bullitt Hadlow, Smudgey Dalton and Chisel Bavin) had a fine 16 shot win but, as stated, Kellerberrin had the wherewithall to counter that and won on the other three rinks to take the accolades.

Quairading Red won their first “A” Division flag in 1995 and then followed up with 5 more flags until 2004. Since then Red had played in another 9 or 10 Grand finals (who’s counting) and won absolutely none. It must be some sort of a world record! Decorum prevents me from writing the words to

The boys went down by 6 shots and were certainly not disgraced. Our other “B” team (White) were beaten in the preliminary final so it shows we’ve got the talent. Now all we need is a bit of something to get us over the line and win that elusive flag.

Rod Simpson won the plate competition by defeating that evergreen professional plate attender Paul O’Hare in a close tussle.

Last week saw the closing day for 2017-18.

Six teams fought it out for the coveted Qdg Agri Service prize and it was won by the stacked side of John and Sandra Stone, Paul O’Hare and Elaine Atkinson. Runners-up was Colin and Donna Hayes and Bullit and Christine Hadlow.

QUAIRADING SWIMMING CLUB Another epic season draws to a close

T

here has definitely been no shortage of swimming for our local swimming club this season. With many swim meets on the menu, abundant coloured medallions being placed around children’s necks and plenty of perseverance and wonderful attitudes down the lanes and around the pool.

A special mention to our Patron Sarah Hadlow for popping in and presenting the winning medallions. Our fantastic coaches Sarah and Kylie-without your time, expertise and dedication we would be lost. Our community members that step in in our times of need. Our pool manager Alex who indulges our presence!

QUAIRADING LADIES BOWLS

Results for 2017/18 Ladies Pennant Season Congratulations to our Quairading White Team for making it into the Grand Final. The team consisted of: Skipper Pam Caporn, Donna Hayes, Sandra Stone and Marie Killian. Skipper Phyllis Brown, Gwen Hards, Dale Wilson and Chris Hadlow.

Thank you to all who travelled to Tammin to support the girls, unfortunately it wasn’t our day. We had 16 ladies participate in our Championship singles event which was fabulous.

The winner for the 2017/18 season was Chris Gimbel and the runner-up was Phyllis Brown. Congratulations to you both on playing such consistent bowls. It was a fabulous game to watch with a tight score of 20/21.

Plate winner was Marg Dall and the runner-up was Chris Hadlow.

GOOD FRIDAY RECIPE IDEA:

Jamie Oliver’s Fish and Cheat’s Chips with Tarragon Mushy Peas

INGREDIENTS  1/3 cup (50g) plain flour  2 eggs, lightly beaten  3 cups (210g) fresh breadcrumbs  1 tsp dried chilli flakes  4 skinless flounder fillets (order from your fishmonger), cut into 4cm-wide strips  Sunflower oil, to shallow-fry Cress or micro herbs, to serve Cheat's Chips  1kg sebago potatoes, scrubbed (unpeeled), cut into 1cm-thick chips  3 rosemary sprigs, leaves picked  1/4 cup (60ml) olive oil  2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced Mushy Peas  25g unsalted butter  400g fresh peas (or frozen, thawed)  1 small bunch tarragon, leaves finely chopped  Juice of 1/2 lemon, plus lemon wedges to serve METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. For the chips, par-boil the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling salted water for 3-4 minutes. Drain, then set aside to cool and dry.

2. Place chips on a baking tray and toss with rosemary, oil and a pinch of salt. Bake for 20 minutes, then remove the tray from the oven and add garlic, stirring to combine. Bake for a further 15-20 minutes until crisp and golden.

3. Meanwhile, for mushy peas, melt butter in a pan over medium heat. Add fresh peas and tarragon, and cook, covered, for 10 minutes (3 minutes for frozen) or until soft. Add lemon juice and season. Mash until mushy. Cover to keep warm.

4. Place flour, egg and breadcrumbs in 3 separate bowls. Season the crumbs with the chilli flakes, salt and pepper. Dust fish in flour, then dip in the egg, shaking off any excess, and finally coat with the breadcrumbs. Season, set aside and repeat with remaining fish.

5. Heat 2cm oil in a large, deep frypan over medium heat (a cube of bread will turn golden in 30 seconds when the oil is hot enough). In batches, add the fish and cook for 2-3 minutes each side until just cooked and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towel.

6. Serve fish with the chips, mushy peas, extra lemon wedges and cress.
