London Centre Celebrates it’s First Graduation...

The first cohort of students ever to enrol at the Bangor Business School London Centre have graduated with Masters degrees.

Some of the graduands travelled to Bangor in north Wales, home of Bangor University, to graduate alongside their fellow postgraduate Business students.

Building on its No.1 position in the UK for Accounting, Banking and Finance research, Bangor Business School brings its first-class education and research expertise to the heart of London's financial district.

Another successful Legal English Summer School Practising law professionals and top Law students from around the world joined together at Bangor this summer for the Legal English Training Programme and Common Law Summer School.

During the two weeks students undertook extensive legal English training, specialist training in Common Law, UK Public Law, Employment Contracts, Contract Law, Intellectual Property and Criminal Law. Students also enjoyed a varied social programme with visits to the beautiful surrounding areas of Bangor and a trip to Liverpool to visit the Crown Court.

Another student from Italy has now attended the summer school 10 years in a row! Bangor Hosts 9/11 Summer School Bangor University was selected to host the prestigious British Council Summer School in August along with two other UK institutions.

The summer school was organised for high school students whose parents died or were seriously injured in the attacks of 9/11.

University the students enjoyed various activities including kayaking in Snowdonia National Park, a digital scrapbooking session and they also visited a castle. The students also took part in a Psychology workshop as well as collecting samples from the Menai Straits to take back to the Ocean Sciences lab.

to teach Chemistry in Africa...

Bangor University strengthens research links with Brazil After signing a research co-operation agreement with the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) in June 2012, making Bangor the first Welsh University to establish a research partnership with FAPESP, Bangor University is pleased to announce the first research projects funded under the co-operation programme.

The programme is supporting three research projects linking researchers from Bangor and Universidade de São Paulo in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The supported projects are: • Locating vulnerable marine ecosystems on the Brazilian Shelf: Maximising research potential, Dr Andrew J. Davies (Bangor), Paulo Y. G. Sumida (Universidade de São Paulo) • Integration of marine ecological processes at multiple spatial scales in the Brazilian coastal zone, Dr Stuart Jenkins (Bangor), Áurea Maria Ciotti (Universidade de São Paulo) • Tropical and Temperate Marine Ecosystems - Adapting to a Changing World, Dr Ian McCarthy (Bangor), Prof. Dr. Alexander Turra (Universidade de São Paulo) Bangor University is the first University in Wales to establish a research partnership with FAPESP and reflects its ambition to further develop its international profile.

Bangor University is also a participant in the ambitious ‘Science without Borders’ scheme, which will see 100,000 Brazilian students studying in top universities worldwide over the next few years.

Dr Matthew Lloyd Davies

A Bangor University research assistant will shortly embark on a once in a lifetime trip to Africa to teach chemistry. Dr Matthew Lloyd Davies from Neath, South Wales, who is a SPECIFIC Technology Transfer Fellow will lead a team of scientists from the UK and South Africa in running an outreach event in South Africa to teach workshops on chemistry.

Matthew is the project leader of the event “Catching the Light with the Rainbow Nation”, which is intended to increase the popularity and understanding of

chemistry in Mafikeng and Durban. The event is funded by SPECIFIC which is an academic and industrial consortium led by Swansea University, with Tata Steel as the main industrial partner, funded by EPSRC, Technology Strategy Board and the Welsh Government.

Matthew explains: “The SOS Africa charity tries to help and fund the education and care of underprivileged African township children. The charity is all about empowerment through education which is something I feel strongly about.”

The workshops that will be given include sunlight to electricity; the manufacture of dye sensitised solar cells from fruit and everyday materials; the wonderful world of colour chemistry; cyanotype photography; and light, the spectrum, and colour.

Former Bangor Student Elected as the DA’s Premier Candidate for the Gauteng National Elections in Africa A former Theology student from Bangor University has been elected as the District Alliance’s premier candidate for the Gauteng National Elections. Mmusi Maimana is currently a deputy federal chairperson of the DA and is also their national spokesperson Mmusi Maimane completed his MA in Theology at Bangor University, he then went on to lecture at the Gordon Institute of Business Science and has also managed his own consultancy firm. He has also worked with nongovernmental organisations, charing a few foundations involved in rural youth development and HIV and Aids management, and has now gone on to make his political debut.

International Student Ambassadors Bangor’s International Student Ambassador scheme has had another successful year. The scheme, which has been running for a number of years was set up to support students during the application process right up to graduation day.

This year 26 students have been chosen to represent the University as ambassadors and will play a key part contributing to the support programme offered to students during their studies at Bangor.

Congratulations to our Chemistry PhD student...

Monalisa Ofure Odibo is 26 and comes from Nigeria, she is studying for a PhD in Law.

Why did you become involved?

Being an international student myself, I understand how one person can help with the transition of moving into a new environment into a wonderful experience. I wanted to be that “one person”, to be part of a team that offers help and advice to students, guiding them on things they might find challenging, making living in a new environment less daunting and helping them deal with a new culture.

It is an innovative scheme to link prospective students to current students, providing them with a unique in-sight at the beginning of studies at Bangor. I joined the scheme to provide prospective students a peek into the diverse academic and cultural experiences at Bangor and to help them choose the ones that meet their tastes.

Why Bangor?

I chose the Psychology department at Bangor for my PhD as it’s one of the best Psychology departments not only in the UK but worldwide.

Bangor Psychology ranks in the top five in UK in terms of student satisfaction (National Student Survey) and in top ten in terms of research power (Research Assessment Exercise).

Dhiya Al-Husenawi and Mr Ali Al Adeeb, The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Iraq

Dhiya Al-Husenawi, a PhD student from the School of Chemistry, Bangor University was awarded a ‘Certificate of Grant of Patent’ for his exceptional research and continuous dedication whilst studying.

Dhiya was awarded his degree by his Excellency, Mr Ali Al Adeeb, the minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Iraq.

Recent National Student Satisfaction survey results have placed Bangor University second in Wales for student experience.

Commenting on the results Professor Oliver Turnbull, Pro Vice Chancellor for Teaching & Learning said:
