Important Update: COVID - 19 Due to the fast changing situation and, in line with many other universities, the University has suspended face to face teaching.

5G Research Centre launched at Bangor University’s Science Park A 5G research centre, which will make Wales a global leader in the technology and change how the internet works, was officially launched recently at M-SParc, Bangor University’s Science Park.

The Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Centre is run by professors and researchers from Bangor University, who are working on speeding up broadband, and are playing a vital role in enabling true 5G. With partners including Huawei and BT, this is global work which could be world-changing.

The centre, backed by £4m EU funding provided by the Welsh Government, will look at ways to use existing fibre technology in the 5G network to improve capacity, flexibility, functionality and services.

50% Scholarships now available For September 2020, Bangor University has introduced some exciting new scholarships with one valued at 50% of the tuition fees. To be eligible to apply for both scholarships students must have already received an offer from Bangor University

Vice-Chancellor Scholarship The ‘Vice-Chancellor Scholarship’ is available to both outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Scholarship amount: Undergraduate - Valued at 50% of the Tuition Fee for Year 1, and up to £3,000 per year for Year 2 & 3* Postgraduate Taught - Valued at 50% of the Tuition Fee *Note: Undergraduate students may continue to receive the scholarship in Years 2 and 3, subject to achieving a minimum overall grade of 70% or above at the end of Year 1 and 2.

Eligibility: Applicants must have achieved: Undergraduate - Grades equivalent of GCE A-level A grade students Postgraduate Taught - Equivalent of a UK 1st class Bachelors degree

Professional Experience Scholarship The ‘Professional Experience Scholarship’ is available for all Postgraduate Taught (Masters Degree) courses starting in September 2020.

Scholarship amount: Postgraduate Taught - Up to £4,000

Eligibility: To be eligible candidates must have a minimum of two years professional work experience in a manegerial position.

Bangor University visits Shanghai Ocean University

Discussions also took place regarding the proposed Ocean Science Summer School program offered by Bangor University which will hopefully be happening again in the near future.

Bangor University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Iwan Davies sent his regards via video to the staff at SHOU and both institutions hope to continue to develop their bright and successful partnership for many years to come.

During the visit, the undergraduate teaching cooperation, staff exchanges and further research cooperations between both universities were discussed, including extending the agreement to not only include Physical Oceanography but Business Management also.

During the visit Professor David Thomas conducted a presentation and met with around 50 SHOU students who were interested in participating in one of the programmes offered in the partnership between Bangor University and Shanghai Ocean

Student Success Stories Sports Scholarships awarded to Bangor’s elite international athletes

Each year, Bangor University awards Sports Scholarships to recognise and support sporting excellence and achievement amongst our students, the scholarships are aimed at helping talented and high-performance students to be able to combine their academic study and sporting performance.

This year Theo Schoebel from France who is a student in our School of Natural Sciences was awarded a scholarship to support him in his Karate, Theo won Silver in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) last year.

Shengjie Wang from China who is studying in Bangor Business School has also been awarded a scholarship to support him in his sport of Taekwondo. Shengjie won Gold at the British National Taiji Championships last year and Bronze in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS). Shengjie said, “It's a great honor to be awarded a sports scholarship this year and thank you to Bangor University for the recognition. The sports scholarship gives me more opportunities to play and promote my university at the national competitions."

Richard Bennett, Director of Commercial Services at Bangor University said: “We are very pleased to support a number of highly talented athletes at Bangor University. We keep investing in up-to-date equipment to attract top athletes to the university. The athletes will also benefit from the expertise of staff at the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences”.

Two Bangor Saudi students awarded in recognition of their outstanding support and contribution Two Bangor University students; Osama AlRuwaili and Fahd Naif Almutairi have been given awards

by Bangor University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Iwan Davies in recognition of their outstanding support and contribution to current and prospective Saudi students.

Fahd and Osama are both former presidents of the Saudi Students Club, and they have made an outstanding impact on the student experience of others, and are always contributing to the positive experience of those around them.

Bangor student selected as International Student Ambassador for UKCISA Nebu George who is currently studying for his PhD in Archaeology at Bangor University’s School of History, Philosophy and Social Sciences has been selected as one of the 10 international Student Ambassador as part of the #WeAreInternational programme lead by the United Kingdom Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA).

Research News Tropical forests’ carbon sink is already rapidly weakening

The United Kingdom Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) is leading the development of a new chapter for the award-winning #WeAreInternational campaign that widens the campaign’s reach and celebrates international students from schools, colleges, universities and study abroad programmes. Launched in November 2019 at UKCISA’s first International Student Forum, the #WeAreInternational Programme is an education policy and leadership development scheme for driven and dedicated individuals from around the world currently studying and living in the UK working as ambassadors for them.

While UKCISA works as an advisory body to the government suggesting and campaigning for various policies, what was missing was the input and feedback from international students i.e. the group that is affected by such policies. With such a new inclusive approach UKCISA aims to bring international students at the heart of such discourse and aims to make the UK an ideal place to study for international students.

Nebu George Nebu was selected from over a hundred applicants and said; “With such an opportunity I intend to campaign for more employability guidance and opportunities available for international students for jobs in their home countries and the UK. This would entail campaigning for increased funding for careers and employment services in UK universities for international students. This would benefit UK students with finding work or experience abroad as well. Thus, enriching the educational experience offered in the UK. I would also like to contribute to immigration policy changes that would help facilitate such job opportunities for international students in the UK. It is time for international student to be at the heart of policies.”

Dr Simon Willcock, a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Geography at Bangor University’s School of Natural Sciences is an expert in tropical landscapes and the benefits people receive from them. He contributed to a major piece of research recently published and collected and provided data from Tanzanian rainforests, as well as collaborating with the manuscript preparation.

He says: “The world’s tropical forests are hugely important and so these findings are alarming.

To understand the impact of our changing planet, scientists from nearly 100 institutions came together to share knowledge and collaborate. If we are to solve global problems such as climate change, politicians, decisionmakers, and members of the public need to do the same – to work together towards a shared goal.”
