It is my pleasure to welcome you to this publication and to the Bangor region. You may be reading this because you are considering a visit, a revisit, a relocation or because you already live here and want to know more about this place you call home!

I have called Maine my home for most of my adult life, because I fell in love with Maine during my childhood. Maine was our family’s vacation spot and every year I wished I didn’t have to leave. I dreamed that one day Maine would be my home and I made that dream come true. I never plan to live anywhere else.

There are so many reasons why you should consider making the Bangor region your home or your next vacation destination. Many of those reasons are found throughout this publication. The one thing that is impossible to capture in these pages are the people you will meet. This is a special place.

This is the kind of place where strangers become fast friends. Where traffic will stop to let you cross the street. Where people from all over the world live and work in our businesses, educational institutions and healthcare facilities. Where small businesses and innovators thrive.

You can enjoy all of our cultural amenities, museums, theaters and concerts. Take a walk on a wooded trail or along the waterfront and enjoy a great meal before or after. Our visitor center, located at the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce has racks of brochures, travel guides, maps and other information that you may find useful.

We also carry visitor guides from other chambers of commerce across the state of Maine. So, if you are interested in venturing out and about beyond Bangor, stop by and pick up a visitors guide or two, or more!

Our staff is available to assist you with any questions you may have. We are happy to help and to share our favorite spaces, places and experiences to help make your experience a memorable one.

You can also try to scan QR Codes without an app. To test if your camera is equipped to do this, use the following steps:

1. Open your Camera app and point it steadily for 2-3 seconds towards the QR Code you want to scan.

2. Whenever scanning is enabled, a notification will appear.

3. If nothing happens, you may have to go to your Settings app and enable QR Code scanning.

4. If QR Codes isn’t an option in your settings, your device unfortunately can’t scan QR Codes natively. But don’t worry, this only means you’ll have to download a third-party QR Code reader app.

MAIN STREET’S STATUE OF PAUL BUNYAN

It’s likely the most photographed landmark in the Bangor region is the Paul Bunyan statue that stands 31 feet tall and can be found on Main Street in front of the Cross Insurance Center, across the street from the Hollywood Hotel and Casino.

What is the story behind Paul anyway?

According to the Bangor Public Library website, the story of Bangor’s Paul Bunyan Statue fittingly begins with a great big party. While volunteers planned the City’s 125th anniversary celebrations for February 1959, Mrs. Connie Bronson, a dedicated local teacher, suggested that the city build a statue of Paul Bunyan to commemorate our nineteenth century legacy as “The Lumber Capital of the World”. The committee, led by local businessman Mr. Gordan Clapp, embraced this idea, and raised the funds for the project.

Mr. J. Normand Martin, a talented artist raised in Madawaska, Maine, and recent Bangor resident, set about sculpting a 22-inch clay model on his kitchen table. He then boarded a train to New York City with his creation cradled in his lap. There he coordinated the statue’s design and fabrication with Messmoor and Damon, Inc., the company that created New York’s 1939 World’s Fair exhibits.

With the party preparations completed, 25,000 people joined in the weeklong Paul Bunyan Days, culminating in the unveiling of our giant lumberjack on Bangor’s birthday February 12th, with Governor Clinton A. Clauson and Mayor John T. Barry presiding.

Having achieved enormous fame for his accomplishments across North America with his trusty companion Babe the Blue Ox, Paul Bunyan, America’s first and greatest folk hero, had finally returned home to his birthplace.

Stepping Back in Time

Sitting at the tidal head of the Penobscot River, Bangor emerged in the early 19th century as the lumber capital of the world. The first European settlers laid down roots in what would become Bangor in 1769. The Wabanaki people inhabited this part of Maine for many generations before then. The abundance of fresh running water of the Penobscot River and the Kenduskeag Stream propelled Bangor to become the anchor of eastern, northern, and central Maine. From this location, the lumber, and other natural resources from the region, helped build the cities on the east coast and beyond. Bangor became the economic and cultural focal point for the region, which it remains to this day. During the height of our lumber boom, Bangor was visited by all

walks of life, from politicians and immigrants to fishermen and artists. This mixture of people, cultures and traditions helped to create the uniqueness that we feel in Bangor today.

When we walk through the streets of our city, we still see architecture harkening back to the wealthy lumbering days. The neighborhoods and blocks of Broadway, Main Street, High Street, West Broadway, and State Street stood some of the most recognizable houses and buildings in Bangor. Freese’s Department Store, the Bangor House, the Bangor Auditorium (new and old), and Norumbega Hall, in addition to the numerous churches whose steeples are seen from all across the area, were built by some of the most well-known architects of the day. These buildings remain part of the fabric of our community even after the businesses have left or the buildings were torn down. Neighborhoods like Little City and Fairmount Park were added and expanded later when our population increased throughout the 1940’s. These areas housed many families that came to Dow Air Force Base, now Bangor International Airport.

Bangor was and still is the service center for this region. The stores, hospitals, schools, colleges, banks, and entertainment venues draw significant numbers of people to not only live and work in Bangor, but also visit. While the venues have changed, one can still see a play at the Bangor Opera House where Jack Benny, Edwin Booth, and many more once performed or you can take in a show on the river by one of the popular touring acts today.

The best way to understand Bangor is to explore it!

Bangor is located near the head of tide of the historic Penobscot River. Bangor Harbor was once the busiest lumber port in the world, shipping the products of Maine’s northern forests to the world. Today, our harbor is home to pleasure craft and coastal cruise vessels. Bangor Landing offers two public docks. Water and power are available, as are pump-out services. Our docks can handle private vessels of virtually all sizes, although larger vessels should contact the Bangor Parks & Rec in advance of arrival. The harbor is open throughout the fresh water boating season. Bangor Landing is located on Bangor’s historic waterfront adjacent to our downtown. THE COMMUNITY CONNECTOR BUS SERVICE

The Community Connector is a fixed route public transit system operated by the City of Bangor for the communities of the Greater Bangor Urbanized Area. The Community Connector operates within the urbanized area of the six-member communities. These include Bangor, Brewer, Veazie, Orono, Old Town, and Hampden. The routes are within walking distance of 75% of the population of the six communities. The service area covers 103 miles of roadway (measured one-way only). Community Connector also provides service to Hussoon University and the University of Maine as part of the regional service.

The Community Connector provides service system-wide Monday through Saturday. No Sunday service is provided. The basic hours of operation are from 6:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. The Community Connector has a fleet of 22 transit buses and 6 minivans. The entire fleet is 100% wheelchair accessible.

Free Fare with your school ID is provided to Eastern Maine Community College, University of Maine, Beal University, and University of Augusta, Bangor. Community Connector also operates the Black Bear Orono Express.

Theater

If quality entertainment is what you seek, you won’t have to look far. Bangor is home to the Penobscot Theatre Company, which produces plays and musicals that are lauded across the state. Going to the theatre is a treat in and of itself, for it is housed in the historic Bangor Opera House, which is known for its brilliant architecture. Elsewhere in the region, Husson University’s Gracie Theatre and the University of Maine’s Collins Center for the Arts offer a multitude of theatrical and dance performances.

Music

In addition to the theater, there is an array of music in Bangor, including one of the country’s oldest community symphonies: the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. The BSO has played its beautiful live music throughout Maine since 1896. If you’re here in the summer, watch as the waterfront comes alive with music. The Waterfront Concert Series and the Cross Insurance Center brings major musicians and bands to Bangor.

 Take in a show at any of the local area performing arts venues: Penobscot Theatre, Gracie Theatre, Cross Insurance Center, Collins Center for the Arts, Bangor Arts Exchange, and other local venues.

 Is there snow on the ground? Then head over to Hermon Mountain for some downhill skiing or tubing with the family.

 Indulge in some shopping at the Bangor Mall, Downtown Bangor or one of several antique malls in the area.

 Take a trek through Hirundo Wildlife Refuge. You can rent kayaks and canoes in the summer and take in the scenery on your cross-country skis and snowshoes in the winter.

 Play golf in the middle of the Queen city at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course, in Orrington at Rocky Knoll Country Club or in Hermon at Hermon Meadow Golf Course.

There are many parks and trails to enjoy in the Bangor region that invite you to take a stroll, a run, walk your dog and meet a friend for a cold beverage or a picnic lunch. Here is a sample listing to get you on your way!

The Bangor Waterfront has undergone a major renovation over the past twenty years; from an industrialized landscape to a lush greenway with trails and open space. Along the banks of the Penobscot River the waterfront offers walking trails, benches and picnic tables.

Perhaps one of Bangor’s most popular parks, Cascade Park, is located on State Street, just past Northern Light, Eastern Maine Medical Center. Equipped with a gazebo, walking trails, picnic tables, and a water fountain, it offers an excellent place for a family outing or picnic. On the premises is a waterfall that’s more than 20 feet high.

The Brewer Riverwalk features themed plantings, paved walking paths, a waterfall and an area for events such as weddings or performances. In the children’s garden you will find chess tables and picnic tables for people of all ages to enjoy.

The Bangor City Forest includes forest access trails, foot trails, wetlands and examples of reforestation and tree regeneration. Many Bangor residents enjoy the City Forest for hiking, running, cross country skiing, and mountain biking. Dog-walking is permitted.

Orono Bog Walk provides a window into some of Maine’s most interesting natural environments. The focal point of the Bog Boardwalk is the peat bog itself, as well as the diverse vegetation and natural environments that surround it. In addition to being a remarkable natural phenomenon, the Orono Bog Boardwalk (see image to the right) also provides a wonderful opportunity to learn more about various Maine ecosystems, from the forested wetlands that surround the bog to the peat bog itself.

WILDLIFE WATCHING

Are you a bird watcher? A good place to take a bird or nature walk is the Fields Pond Audubon Center in Holden. There are smooth manicured trails, and in the spring and early summer, red-winged blackbirds and bluebirds sing as bitterns hide in the marsh. Maine Audubon has another sanctuary off Essex Street in Bangor called the West Penjajawoc Grasslands. This area features a beautiful green field with mowed paths that are easy to traverse where you can often find bobolinks in the spring and early summer. Hirundo Wildlife Refuge and Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge are two sanctuaries that are home to over 200 different bird species and 45 species of mammals.

If you’re hoping to see a moose during your visit, consider hiring a registered guide or join a moose safari. These moose experts know just where and when to take their guests to spot moose. The Maine Guide Service offers moose tours year round, and within the entire Maine Highlands Region—a great day trip if you’ve got the time! While you’re in the Maine outdoors, you are bound to spot some other native wildlife and beautiful views, too.

When to Visit

Color progresses from north to south. Generally northern Maine is at or near peak conditions the last week of September into the first week of October. Central, and western mountains of Maine are at or near peak Indigenous Peoples’ Day week/weekend. Coastal and southern Maine generally reach peak or near peak conditions mid-to-last October.

Winter Fun

There are more than a dozen Maine Snowmobile Association recognized clubs within the region. There are many trailside accommodations in the area, with access to thousands of miles of groomed and maintained trails.

There is nothing more beautiful than a freshly snowcovered forest in the early morning. Spending time in our woods is one of the best ways to truly experience winter. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing provide the peaceful escape that many seek when visiting. There are miles of groomed and ungroomed trails specifically for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Another unique adventure in the Bangor Region is the opportunity to take sledding to a whole new level, either behind a team of dogs or at Hermon Mountain

The Penobscot Valley Ski Club, incorporated in 1941, is one of Maine’s oldest ski organizations. Since its inception, the club has offered cross-country and downhill ski trips, competitions and instruction. PVSC currently has nearly 500 members, many of whom volunteer time and energy to support the club’s efforts.

Check out the new Caribou Bog Outdoor Center (CBOC), a four-season, public outdoor center. The building is located off the Taylor Road in Orono and is centrally located within the Caribou Bog Conservation Area (CBCA), a nearly 7,000-acre corridor of conservation lands and extensive trails extending from the Bangor City Forest north to Old Town. The new Center will enhance the overall “experience” for Nordic skiers, mountain bikers, bird watchers, runners/ walkers, and the public.

Hermon Mountain provides a lift to the top of the mountain and over 600 feet of “chutes” for speciallydesigned tubes-riders can experience the thrill of a lifetime! Hermon Mountain also offers downhill skiing and snowboarding, which is the perfect combination of winter activities to excite the whole family.

Looking to take to the ice? Whether in an arena, on a frozen pond, or man-made rink, the Bangor Region has plenty of indoor and outdoor ice skating opportunities.

Bryant in 1834 and built by the Bangor Horticultural Society soon after, the same year that Bangor was incorporated as a city. The cemetery was modeled after Mt. Auburn Cemetery (1831) in Boston, Massachusetts. Bangor was at that time a frontier boom-town, and much of its architecture and landscaping was modeled after that of Boston. The site has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Yes this is a “beer bar”, but the beers are unlike anything you will find elsewhere. They are out there! In the summer they have a great outdoor seating area and serve “adult slushies (so good) and they have an everchanging menu with things you’ve never heard of but that you will never forget! Try the wings. Trust us. They say they close at 9:00PM but we don’t believe it!

BENJAMIN’S PUB

If you haven’t been in to try one of Clarko’s Benjitos or other fun and elaborate cocktails, make it a point to get over there and rectify the situation. With arcade games, a pool table, video wall and seriously creative programming almost every week, there is always a party rewing. Dive into some comfort food like tachos while you are there. Closes at 11:00PM. This closing time is mostly wrong but it’s what they have posted. They will stay with you until 1 a.m.

Owners Tiffany and Josh have conjured up a special place that lives at the intersection of Mario Kart tournaments, art shows and heavy metal performances. Check their Facebook page often because you never know what the heck will be going on. What you can count on are mind blowing food and cocktail selections with a funky pop culture twist. It says 10PM on their website, but they often are open until about 1AM

This classic Maine brewery sits on the waterfront with an amazing view of the Penobscot River to accompany any beverage from their full bar. Update Your Driver’s License and Vehicle Registration:

Visit the nearest Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) office to update your driver’s license and vehicle registration. Maine requires new residents to update their driver’s license within 30 days of moving. Also, register your vehicle and get Maine license plates.

Finding a Doctor: You can find a primary care physician or specialist through Northern Light Health, St. Joseph Healthcare or Penobscot Community Health Care (PCHC), all of which offer comprehensive medical services in the region. Choosing a Dentist: For dental care, visit the Maine Dental Association website to find licensed dentists in the area. You can search based on specialty and location to find a dentist who best fits your requirements.

BRADLEY

Bradley was incorporated as a town in 1834, named after the American Revolutionary War soldier, Joseph Bradley. The town’s history is deeply intertwined with the lumber industry, which was the primary economic driver in the region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Great Northern Paper Company, one of the largest paper mills in the world, was located in Bradley and played a significant role in shaping the town’s history and development.

DEDHAM

Named for a town in Massachusetts and first settled in 1810, Dedham was incorporated under its present name by the Legislature of Maine, Feb.7, 1837, and signed by “Hannibal Hamlin, Speaker of the House”. It is on the old stage route running from Bangor to Ellsworth, known at present as US Route 1A.

The Lake House, on this route, also known as “Lucerne Inn” was run by John L. Phillips in the early days and is the center of “Lucerne-inMaine”, the beauty spot of America. Because The old Massachusetts Colony at Dedham Village was known for years as “New Boston”, the inhabitants were accused of “putting on airs”.

Dedham has a mountain group with Bald Mt. the highest at 1261 feet above sea level. Here ten mountains are clustered, with their hill children all around. It has gained the name of “Switzerland of America”. Lakes of exquisite beauty lie among these hills and mountains, some so close they mirror the tops of the mountains in their waters.

EDDINGTON

Eddington is a rural town in southern Penobscot County, settled in 1780 and incorporated on February 22, 1811 from Eddington Plantation. It annexed land from Jarvis Gore in 1823 and from Brewer in 1846 and 1855. Eddington has a population of 2,225 and is 27 square miles in size. Eddington Village has been known as the area where Route 9 & Route 46 intersect. This is a historic area of town that includes the Eddington Community Church, Comins Hall, and historic homes.

Eddington is home to several bodies of water and recreational areas. The Penobscot River borders the western side of the town and recently was just reopened to Salmon fishing. Chemo Pond is the largest body of water in Eddington and is a busy place during the summer months. The Penobscot Experimental Forest, Davis Pond, and Boy Scout Camp Roosevelt are also popular destinations.

2234 Hudson Road

The general area had been known as Kenduskeag Plantation in the 18th century. The first settler was Joseph Clark, a Revolutionary War refugee from Nova Scotia, who arrived in 1789. Some settlers came from the Levant Plateau region of Nova Scotia, thus the name.

In the 1990-2000 decade Levant, just 12 miles from Bangor on Route 222, was one of the fastest growing towns in the area with population growing by more than 25%. The next decade it grew by over 31%.

The village of West Levant is at a crossroad with the Stetson Road and Route 222 which is a direct route to Bangor. At the crossroad is West Levant Church of God, an expanse of agricultural fields, and a convenience store with gasoline pumps.

NEWBURGH

Newburgh is a town in Penobscot County, incorporated on February 15, 1819. Settled in about 1794, the town is on the old stage route from Bangor through China to Vassalboro near Augusta. Newburgh Center village is on combined U.S. Route 202 and Maine Route 9.

The Kennard Road hiking trail, originally developed by the Newburgh Heritage Trust, is a one-mile walk, with parking available.

Since time immemorial, the Penobscot Nation, penawahpkekeyak, the people of the place of the white rocks, has inhabited its ancestral homeland situated within the drainage area of the Penobscot River and its many tributaries, lakes, and ponds. Orrington was the first town in Penobscot County, incorporated on March 21, 1788 from New Worcester Plantation, also known as China Plantation. Orrington is the only town to belong to the counties of Lincoln, Hancock, then Penobscot as those boundaries changed with the creation of new counties.

VEAZIE

Veazie was incorporated in 1853 from the seventh ward of Bangor, then ceded some land back to that city in 1889.

It was named, and likely created, for General Samuel Veazie who owned the saw mills and most of the property in the new town. Veazie is a densely populated suburb of Bangor and a frequent residential option for staff of the University of Maine in Orono.

Most of its housing is along the Penobscot River near Eddington Bend, a major curve in that river at the Eddington–Brewer line on the east side of the waterway. At only 3.4 square miles in area, Veazie is one of the smallest municipalities in the state. U.S. Route 2 is also its Main Street.

WINTERPORT
