Desk report:

Starmer considering digital ID scheme to tackle illegal migration

Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed for the first time the government is looking at digital ID as a way to tackle illegal immigration.

The prime minister said a new identity programme could play an "important part" in reducing the incentive to enter the UK without permission.

The last Labour government started issuing ID cards to UK citizens, but the scheme was scrapped by the ToryLiberal Democrat coalition over privacy concerns.

But Sir Keir said he felt the debate had "moved on in the last 20 years". Speaking to political editor Chris Mason, Sir Keir said: "We all carry a lot more digital ID now than we did twenty years ago, and I think that psychologically, it plays a different part."

Asked whether a new scheme could play a role in reducing the attractiveness

of the UK as a destination for illegal migrants, he added: "My instinct is it can play an important part. Obviously we need to look through some of the detail."

He added that, two decades on from the row over New Labour's physical ID card scheme, the public was

likely to "look differently" at a digital-based scheme.

He did not confirm whether any new digital ID scheme would be mandatory.

Employers and landlords have been able to use government-certified digital verification services since

2022 to conduct right to work and right to rent checks on passport-holding British and Irish citizens.

A Home Office online scheme also exists to check the status of some nonBritish or Irish citizens.

It is understood officials are

looking at the potential for a new scheme to provide a more consistent approach to conducting the checks.

They are also thought to be exploring whether the scheme could reduce the use of fake documents and make it easier to target enforcement activity.

Sir Keir's comments are the most positive remarks yet by the prime minister about the idea, which is likely to reignite a debate over civil liberties.

The government has previously rejected a digital ID proposal suggested by former Labour Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair, whose government legislated for compulsory identity cards when he was in office.

Around 15,000 were in circulation when the scheme was scrapped by the coalition government in 2011, and the database destroyed.

Vandals graffiti Rayner’s seaside home

Desk report:

Angela Rayner’s seaside flat has been vandalised with graffiti calling her a “tax evader”.

The £800,000 flat in Hove, East Sussex, was sprayed with the phrase overnight after Ms Rayner admitted that she had dodged a £40,000 tax bill on the property.

One graffiti message said: “Tax Evader Rayner!” while another on the wall outside her apartment said: “Tax Evasion.” There is no suggestion that Rayner has evaded paying tax. Another piece of graffiti on the wall read: “B----”.

A spokesman for Ms Rayner said: “This vandalism to residents’ homes is totally unjustifiable and beyond the pale. Neither Angela nor her neighbours deserve to be subjected to harassment and intimidation. It will rightly be a matter for the police to take action as they deem appropriate.”

Sir Keir Starmer’s official spokesman said: “The Prime

Minister condemns this vandalism in the strongest possible terms. Whatever scrutiny our parliamentarians may face, it is appalling that their private homes should be targeted in this way.”

Residents living nearby said they were “shocked and appalled” by the vandalism. One said: “What

a disgraceful thing to do. I simply can’t believe it. I hope the police catch them. I’m sure there’s CCTV nearby.”

Another said: “I woke up and went for a jog and saw it. It’s a right mess. I’m appalled, to be honest. It raises many fresh questions about the safety of MPs again.

“I’ve seen Angela Rayner

around, and she said hello and was very pleasant. I’m so astonished really.”

David Ansell, 58, a resident who owns a chimneysweeping company, was cleaning the spray paint from the properties.

Mr Ansell, a Labour voter at the last election, said: “I would have thought it’s

been done by locals. I’ve just cleaned one side of the street, but I suspect it will all be up again tonight.”

While he did not think Ms Rayner should resign, Mr Ansell added that he would not be voting Labour again.

Sean Rooney, 70, a local resident and engineer, said: “It’s terrible. No one has any right to do that to someone.

“It doesn’t matter what position they hold. People around here are pretty open and accepting, and I don’t think they’d hold it against Angela. What she did is not an offence in any way.” Ms Rayner referred herself to the ethics watchdog after admitting on Wednesday that she failed to pay the £40,000 tax bill on the purchase of the flat.

The Deputy Prime Minister, facing growing pressure to quit, triggered the inquiry days after The Telegraph first disclosed that she had avoided the extra stamp duty normally applied on a second home.

NHS kicks off winter vaccine roll out with flu jabs for children and pregnant women

Millions of children and pregnant women are set to get their flu vaccinations from today, as the NHS kicks off its vital autumn vaccine roll out to protect people ahead of winter.

Vaccine teams across the country are ramping up efforts to make it as easy as possible for those eligible to get their jabs, including family drop-in clinics in the community.

For the first time as part of the national drive to get more children protected, school immunisation teams in some areas will be offering flu vaccines to 2- to 3-year-olds in nurseries with this expected to roll out more widely.

Expectant mums and all children aged two to 16 years are eligible for the flu vaccine, with this expanding to those aged six months to 18 years in clinical risk groups.

Most school-aged children will receive their flu vaccinations at school, but younger children and those who miss their school or nursery session can also get the vaccine at their GP practice or at a community clinic.

Pregnant women should speak to their maternity team to receive the flu jab at their scheduled maternity appointments, or by contacting their local GP practice or a pharmacy.

From today the NHS National Booking System also opens for all eligible individuals to book their winter flu and Covid-19 vaccinations, with appointments starting from Wednesday 1 October.

The flu vaccine is estimated to have prevented around 100,000 people from being hospitalised in England last winter by helping protect those at risk from getting seriously ill, particularly during the colder months when people gather indoors and viruses spread.

Despite this, there were more than 300,000 hospital bed days taken up by patients with flu last winter – almost double the previous winter (175,062 in 2023-24) and close to 50% higher than the year before (216,120 in 2022-23) – adding pressure to NHS services during the busy period.

The NHS is sending out millions of invitations this month to remind eligible people to come forward as soon as they can, but they do not need to wait for an invitation to book. Those eligible can book quickly and

easily on the NHS website, NHS App or by calling 119.

Dr Amanda Doyle, National Director for Primary Care and Community Services at NHS England, said: “The threat from getting seriously ill from flu and COVID-19 is all too real and each year we see hundreds of thousands of people hospitalised due to these nasty viruses –especially across the winter months.

“Vaccination is our best defence against these viruses and can be lifesaving – so I would urge mums-to-be, parents of young children and teens, and others who are eligible to come forward or book appointments for their jabs as soon possible, to help protect themselves and loved ones.

“Flu and covid vaccines are free to those at greatest risk and teams across the country are working hard to make it as quick and easy as possible to get them via local GP practices, pharmacies, in schools and other community clinics, so please do book an appointment today – it could keep you out of hospital this winter.”

This year, Covid-19 vaccinations are available to adults aged 75 and over, older adult care home residents, and people who are immunosuppressed.

As well as children and pregnant women, from October the flu vaccination is being offered to everyone aged 65 and over, under 65s in clinical risk groups, care

ensure those most at risk are protected during the colder months when people gather indoors and viruses spread.

Dr Jamie Lopez Bernal, Consultant Epidemiologist for Immunisation at UKHSA said: “If you are eligible for a flu vaccine it is because you are at greater risk of getting seriously ill. Pregnant women and all children aged two to 16 are eligible for the flu vaccine and should get protected every year. When children take up the vaccination, it not only helps protect them. It also, importantly, helps to stop them spreading flu to others at greater risk, such as their grandparents or younger siblings. It takes around two weeks to get optimum protection once vaccinated, so book an appointment now.”

home residents and carers, close contacts of those who are immunosuppressed, frontline social care workers, and health and social care staff.

For adults eligible for both vaccines the NHS will make flu and COVID-19 jabs available at the same time, providing protection from both viruses in one visit.

Minister of State for Care Stephen Kinnock said: “We’re taking action now to protect the most vulnerable and build our defences before seasonal viruses take hold.

“Last winter showed us the significant impact the flu vaccination programme has with over 100,000 hospitalisations prevented, protecting patients from disease and the NHS from winter pressures.

“I urge all eligible families to come forward as soon as possible. Getting vaccinated now means you’ll be protected before peak flu season hits.”

Appointments for Covid-19 vaccinations will be available until Friday 30 January 2026, with flu jabs offered until the end of March 2026, in line with the typical seasons for the viruses.

Those eligible are being urged to take up the offer as soon as they can to ensure protection ahead of the peak winter virus season, with evidence from UKHSA suggesting the flu season usually peaks in December and January. This means starting adult vaccinations from October will

The RSV vaccine is delivered year-round and can be given at the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine, but it is recommended to be given separately to the flu vaccine for greater effectiveness.

Background:

Based on scientific advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), those eligible for a flu vaccination this Autumn/ Winter include –

From 1 September 2025:

Last winter NHS services experienced a mix of seasonal viruses including COVID-19, flu, norovirus and RSV, which is why last month the NHS issued a call for pregnant women to come forward for their RSV jabs to help protect their babies due this winter against respiratory viruses.

The RSV vaccine was offered to pregnant women and older adults in England for the first time last September and has now helped to protect more than two million eligible people since the rollout kicked off.

Kate Brintworth, Chief Midwifery Officer for NHS England, said: “Getting vaccinated while pregnant is the best way to protect your baby from the moment they are born, as it passes on that extra protection to them and helps keep you safe during pregnancy.

“Vaccinations against flu, whooping cough and RSV are recommended by the NHS for pregnant women and are proven to be safe for mothers and babies.

“With flu jabs available from today for women at any stage of their pregnancy, now is the time for mums to act to make sure their babies are protected ahead of their first few months this winter, with whooping cough vaccines available from 20 weeks and RSV from 28 weeks.”

Pregnant mums from 28 weeks onwards can access the RSV jab through their maternity services, or alongside older adults aged 75, via their local GP practice or one of the over 120 community pharmacies delivering the vaccines in the North West, East of England and the Midlands.

pregnant women all children aged 2 or 3 years on 31 August 2025 primary school aged children (from Reception to Year 6) secondary school aged children (from Year 7 to Year 11) all children in clinical risk groups aged from 6 months to less than 18 years

From 1 October 2025: those aged 65 years and over those aged 18 years to under 65 years in clinical risk groups (as defined in the Influenza chapter of the Green Book) those in long-stay residential care homes carers in receipt of carer’s allowance, or those who are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person close contacts of immunocompromised individuals frontline workers in a social care setting without an employer led occupational health scheme including those working for a registered residential care or nursing home, registered domiciliary care providers, voluntary managed hospice providers and those that are employed by those who receive direct payments (personal budgets) or Personal Health budgets, such as Personal Assistants Health and social care staff will also be offered a flu vaccine from their organisation from 1 October 2025, with multiple convenient options to get vaccinated based around working and shift patterns.

This year’s autumn COVID-19 vaccination programme will run from 1 October 2025 to 31 January 2026 and those eligible include:

adults aged 75 years and over residents in a care home for older adults individuals aged 6 months and over who are immunosuppressed (as defined in the COVID-19 chapter of the Green Book).

Epping trial: asylum seeker

found guilty of sexual assault on girl, 14

An Ethiopian asylum seeker who provoked nationwide protests when he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old schoolgirl near a migrant hotel in Essex has been convicted.

Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, approached a group of children and asked a girl back to his room at the Bell Hotel in Epping to “make lovely African babies” on July 7.

He described the girl as “very pretty” and told her that “age did not matter”. He then tried to kiss the child in front of her friends. The girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, told detectives: “I froze, I couldn’t move. I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t process anything.” Chelmsford magistrates’

court was told that Kebatu, a sports teacher in his native

country, followed the girl the following day and tried

to make her kiss her male friend. He then put his hand on the girl’s thigh. A woman, who Kebatu touched without consent, confronted him and branded him a “paedophile”. On Thursday, district judge Christopher Williams found Kebatu guilty of five offences, including sexually assaulting the girl.

The defendant, who was dressed in a grey prison tracksuit and assisted by a Tigrinya interpreter, held his hand to his face as the verdicts were delivered.

Kebatu, who paid €1,800 (£1,551) to travel to Britain on a rubber dinghy, denied all the offences. He told the court: “I’m not a wild animal, I can’t do this kind of thing.”

Tube strike countdown: TfL says RMT has

24 hours to back down and avert six-day meltdown

Desk report:

RMT union chiefs have been given 24 hours to avert a massive strike that is expected to shut the London Underground next week.

Transport for London told The Standard that unless the union backs down and suspends its walkout threat by “D-day” on Friday night, disruption to services is inevitable from Sunday evening. London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan is understood to have no intention of intervening, despite a union request for him to get involved.

This is because his decision to find £30m from City Hall reserves to get a RMT strike called off last year has effectively backfired - as it has created an expectation in the current dispute that TfL’s “final offer” will be improved if extra pressure can be applied. On Thursday afternoon, both sides remained some distance apart, with TfL insisting that the RMT’s demand for a shorter working week was unaffordable.

The RMT said TfL’s public statements had been “disappointing and intransigent” and added: “The strikes remain on."

The Standard has obtained full details of the battle over working hours at the heart of the dispute – and the pay and conditions currently enjoyed by the 16,500 London Underground staff.

Since 2020 they have enjoyed

cumulative pay rises of about 25 per cent – including 8.4 per cent in 2022, 6.6 per cent in 2023 and 4.6 per cent last year – with a further 3.4 per cent on the table for the current 2025/26 financial year. High-ranking TfL sources said they believed the existing conditions – a 35-hour working week plus generous pension, free allzones Travelcards (including for a family member or friend) and a £400 payment for working Boxing Day – were already industry-leading.

Station staff typically work 37.5 hours a week, meaning

they qualify for 2.5 hours a week of additional leave.

Over a year, this adds up to 15 days – meaning a total of 53 days’ leave or holiday a year when Bank holidays are included.

The RMT is seeking a 32hour working week but union sources say that “even a small cut in hours would take the pressure off” – suggesting it is preparing to compromise rather than have to ask its 10,400 members to lose pay by going on strike. But TfL says that even a 30-minute reduction in the 35-hour week

would cause chaos with staff rosters – and do virtually nothing to address the RMT’s concerns about staff fatigiue.

TfL says it would cost “tens of millions of pounds” to reduce working hours. “It’s not something we are going to entertain,” one senior official said. “We are not going to go below 35 hours. It’s unaffordable.”

However TfL is willing to limit station staff to 35 hours a week – but that would mean an end to the leave days earned via overtime, something the RMT does not want to concede.

Nick Dent, TfL’s director of London Underground customer operations, posted a video message to staff on Thursday in which he said the RMT’s demand for more time away from work would “come at an enormous cost” to TfL.

Mr Dent said: “Even half an hour off the working week would cost tens of millions of pounds for the organisation.”

He said TfL’s pay and conditions were already “the best in the industry”.

If the strike goes ahead in full, a near total shutdown of the network from Monday to Thursday will result.

However the suspicion is that if the strike does start on Sunday then it may only last one or two days and be suspended pending further talks. Tube drivers earn just over £70,000 while station staff earn a minimum of £35,000 a year, a salary that typically rises within a year to £46,000 a year.

Station staff vacancies are oversubscribed and attract a deluge of applicants, while driver vacancies are only advertised internally, such is the demand.

TfL also enjoys a high staff retention rate on the Underground, with only about four per cent of staff leaving each year – half of them due to retirement.

Overcoming taboos for a happier, healthier pregnancy

During pregnancy, it’s normal to have questions or concerns about your health and your baby’s development. Speaking openly with healthcare professionals about any issue, even ones that might feel embarrassing or difficult to discuss, helps ensure you both get the best possible care, say Midwives Wendy Olayiwola and Huda Mohamed.

If you’re feeling a little anxious about starting a family, you’re not alone. You might worry about keeping your baby safe, or how you’ll manage when your baby comes.

“I can reassure you that what you’re feeling is normal but it helps to talk about it,” says Wendy, a midwife and NHS England’s National Maternity Lead for Equality.

Your mental health matters too

“Mental health is especially important during the perinatal period – before, during and after pregnancy. Peer support is good for our wellbeing, and it starts with talking about how we’re feeling.

“If you can’t speak to friends or family, there may be a local antenatal group you can join. These are a good way to find out about local services too.

“Many women benefit from online services and pregnancy and mental health apps to cope with unhelpful thoughts and feelings. Some help dads and partners too.”

Apps and resources can be found on the NHS website, from the Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA), mental health charities like Mind, and maternal health charities like Tommy’s or Pandas.

Free NHS Talking Therapies offer counselling and therapy for problems such as low mood, obsessive thoughts, or anxiety. You can read more about it and find a local service at www.nhs. uk/talk.

The NHS runs specialist perinatal mental health services for women with complex or severe mental health problems. These include community services, and mother and baby units where women having treatment in hospital can stay with their babies.

“Mental health is something we shouldn’t avoid talking about,” adds Wendy. “The NHS is here for your mental and physical health, and both are important for you and for your family.

“If you need help before pregnancy, during your pregnancy or afterwards, please tell your midwife, GP or health visitor, or, if you’re already receiving care for a mental health condition, let your mental health team know.

“If you feel there’s a risk you might hurt yourself or your baby, please call 999. A mental health

emergency is as important as a physical one.”

No reason to be ashamed

Taboo topics also include female genital mutilation (FGM). This is where the female genitals are deliberately cut, injured, or changed without a medical reason and is illegal in the UK.

Over 230 million girls and women have undergone FGM globally. It’s also known as female circumcision or cutting, and by other terms including sunna, gudniin, halalays, tahur, megrez and khitan. As well as being extremely painful, it can lead to serious long-term mental and physical health problems affecting sexual health, fertility, pregnancy and childbirth.

“FGM can increase a woman’s risk of complications such as bleeding and infection, putting them and their baby at risk,” explains Huda Mohamed MBE, the FGM specialist lead midwife at Whittington Health NHS Trust, in London.

“Women should never be ashamed of it. If it’s happened to you, please tell us so we can help you.

“FGM clinics offer a range of support such as advice, counselling, sexual health services, D-einfibulation (reversal of FGM) and care throughout pregnancy and after birth. We can also diagnose types of FGM.

“Women might require longer appointments, so you’re more comfortable, and care plans for each FGM survivor woman that meet their individual needs and wishes.”

Other past experiences, including sexual abuse or a traumatic pregnancy, can also have an impact.

“Fear and anxiety are common after a traumatic experience,” says Huda. “They can affect your health as well as your confidence in attending appointments, especially for examinations that may bring back bad memories.

“If you don’t feel able to speak with us, you may benefit from

confidential online services or helplines like those on the Maternal Mental Health Alliance website.” Please use this link to read more information on the NHS website about Mental health problems and pregnancy.

Vaccination – why it matters in pregnancy

It can be hard to decide about vaccination when we can’t always tell the difference between facts and fiction, especially on social media.

“Families should never feel they can’t ask us to explain something. It doesn’t matter if it’s NHS information, something they’ve heard from a family member, or information read online,” says Huda.

“The only bad questions are those you haven’t had answers to, so please ask us. Here’s some essential facts to know.”

Women with Black and South Asian heritage are more at risk of developing pregnancy complications that can mean babies are born earlier or at a lower weight.

“Unfortunately, both make them more vulnerable to illnesses that can have severe consequences for newborns,” adds Wendy.

“The NHS recommends some vaccines for pregnant women because the immunity they gain is shared with their baby and protects them in their first weeks of life.”

Recommended NHS vaccines in pregnancy are Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and pertussis, which is also known as whooping cough. In the winter, pregnant women are offered a flu vaccination, and some are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination during the winter and spring months.

Reducing the risks for your baby

Student midwife Yusra Osman knows the risks well. Her first child developed bronchiolitis when he was just three months old.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus, RSV is the leading cause of

service.”

Yusra’s son recovered well. He loves sports and is now a big brother, but he has been left with asthma which flares up each time he is sick.

“I’m so incredibly grateful for how far he’s come, but the memory never really leaves you,” says Yusra.

“Looking back, it’s a mum’s worst nightmare. I had a son about a year and a half later and had the RSV vaccine been available then, I’d definitely have had it.”

Information you can trust

infant bronchiolitis, a serious lung infection which makes it hard for babies to feed and breath.

Yusra had gone to get her son up and found he had a fever and was gasping for breath.

“I wasn’t a healthcare professional back then but as a mum your instincts take over,” she recalls. Straight away she rang NHS 111 for advice and was told to call 999 immediately for an ambulance.

“Everything after that was a blur, but I remember his chest was caving in and out and he was really struggling to catch his breath.”

Hospital staff said her son’s oxygen levels were dangerously low. “That was one of those things you don’t want to hear as a mum.

“He was crying, and we kept trying to put an oxygen mask on, but he was fighting to get it off and didn’t want to be touched.

“We end up staying in hospital for about three to four nights. He ended up on oxygen and feeding tube.”

Yusra had been breastfeeding, but her son was too poorly for her to continue. “We lost our sort of physical touch; we lost our bond, and I just felt helpless.”

Huda explains: “Like Yusra’s son, around 30,000 babies in the UK are admitted to hospital each year because of RSV.

“While it’s a common cause of coughs and cold-like symptoms, it can also lead to serious lung infections. Babies are especially at risk because their immune systems are still developing. A severe infection may result in breathing problems later in life and can be fatal.

“Vaccination reduces the risk of severe RSV lung infection by around 70% in the first six months of life.

“If you’re 28 weeks pregnant or later and haven’t been offered RSV vaccination, please ask your GP practice or maternity

Pertussis is a serious bacterial infection causing long bouts of coughing and choking which makes it hard to breathe. It’s also known as whooping cough because some people make a distinctive “whoop” sound while coughing, though babies don’t always make this noise.

“Pertussis vaccination in pregnancy helps protect infants before they can have their own vaccinations at 8, 12, and 16 weeks old,” says Wendy.

“You’ll normally have your vaccine around the time of your mid-pregnancy scan (usually 20 weeks) but can receive it from 16 weeks. If you’re 20 weeks or more and haven’t been offered your vaccine, please ask.”

Most pregnant women don’t need a COVID-19 vaccination this spring. Women who have a weakened immune system because of a health condition or treatment are eligible and can have their vaccine at any point in their pregnancy.

You can discuss if you’re eligible with your GP practice or maternity team, and book before 17 June at www.nhs.uk/ covidvaccine or find a walk-in vaccination site.

“Vaccination isn’t a guarantee you won’t catch an infection or illness,” explains Huda. “But it is the most effective way to protect you and your baby from serious complications which could be life-threatening.”

Yusra adds: “It’s a mum’s thing – part of our job is to protect our children and I feel like getting a vaccination like RSV just helps to protect your child.”

ROYALS BACK TO WORK!

Desk report::

The Princess of Wales looked stunning as she joined her husband Prince William on a visit to the Natural History Museum in London today as they returned to duties after their summer break, which reportedly included a yacht trip to Greece.

Kate, 43, who studied art history at university and has been patron of the attraction since 2013, was seen with her newly blonde locks on display after spending a summer in the sun.

The Prince of Wales also showed a hint of tan during their day out in the capital following their traditional break, which was this year said to include a trip on their superyacht to Kefalonia, sailing around the Greek islands.

Kate, who has apparently dyed her brunette locks a few shades lighter, looked stylish in a fitted tweed 'Hacket' blazer from Ralph Lauren, paired with a white Boyfriend Shirt from sustainable British brand With Nothing Underneath, smart dark green tailored trousers and £199 tassel loafers from Pretty Ballerinas.

Alongside gentle waves in her hair, the princess opted for a natural sweep of make-up and added her £495 alphabet necklace from Daniella Draper - which features the initials of her three children, George, Charlotte and Louis - as well as Princess Diana's sapphire engagement ring and £850 Kiki McDonough pear drop earrings.

Today, however, the couple dodged downpours as they kicked off their own 'autumn term' and visited the site's newly transformed gardens, meeting children and young people taking part in learning programmes.

As they arrived at the venue, the supportive Prince was seen placing a hand on his wife's back, making for a sweet display of affection.

The princess appeared firmly in her element as she laughed with school pupils as it began to pour with rain during their time in the gardens - even sweetly helping one child to shelter under her umbrella. Kate has spoken at length about how getting back to nature has helped with her cancer recovery.

Arriving at the museum, Catherine, who previously visited in 2021, said to Dr Sandy Knapp: 'Sorry it's been such a long time for me to come back.'

The party posed for photos

on the steps to the museum before greeting visitors queuing up to get inside - and Catherine even gave one over-eager youngster a highfive.

They were set to join children taking part in 'pond dipping' searching for newts and toads at the Nature Discovery Garden. But seconds after the primary school children from Kender Primary School, New Cross, south London, arrived to join the royal visitors they were soaked in a massive and sudden downpour.

Catherine and William shared their umbrellas before calling off the outside activity and ushered the children into the dry at the nearby Nature Activity Centre.

The princess led several children while William helped control the rear as the youngsters splashed in puddles as they tried to keep out of the rain.

Beverley Brown, 44, assistant headteacher at Kender Primary School, said: 'We had been waiting for the session to start and the children were very excited. As we started to move it started to pour and we didn't know what to do. 'Prince William gallantly held an umbrella over an adult and children. Princess Kate was in amongst us and said 'let them go in' and 'let's take them inside, it's pouring'.'

All had to dry off inside the activity centre before the royals took part in a workshop helping the children identify animals encased in blocks and find their regular habitat.

Asked by a teacher for their findings, Catherine said the children in her group 'decided spiders are everywhere.'

William rested his arm on one teacher's damp shoulders and said: 'Are you wet? We got you inside in time.'

Speaking afterwards, Ms Brown added: 'It was an amazing experience for children talking to them non stop about mini beasts. Prince William was laughing as some of the children were using them like jenga blocks.

'Lots of our families live in quite crowded housing and don't have access to gardens so to experience all of this at the Natural History Museum is very important for the children. 'We have received a National Education Nature Park Department of Environment grant for £10,000 for our own pond.'

Catherine, who had visible rain marks on her green blazer jacket, also joined

They also take part in classes aimed at connect with nature and help boost biodiversity in urban areas.

Sitting down in the activity centre, Catherine said: 'Sorry we are a bit wet. It was nice and dry and then suddenly within seconds, it was such a lovely day.'

William laughed as he added: 'But it's nature, in amongst nature

The school has created a vertical garden which has dramatically cooled temperature in a classroom which used to be unbearably warm

William asked about other 'dream' plans the school has which could involve garden on roofs or and less tarmac around the site.

Three of the pupils told William they wanted to work as marine biologists.

The Prince told them there were still many unknown mysteries of the deep and added: 'You three could be the first ones to bring back crazy cool research from down at the bottom.' Speaking afterwards Noah, 14, said he was surprised at how 'informal' the visit was.

They were shown how cuttingedge technology is being used around the garden to inform the Museum’s conservation and research biodiversity projects.

A network of sensors collects environmental data and, together with environmental DNA data, build a picture of life in the gardens, making them one of the most intensively studied urban sites of its kind globally and a testbed for conservation science innovation.

The trailblazing education programme, led by the Museum working with the RHS and commissioned by the Department for Education, has seen more than 7,500 schools, colleges and nurseries getting involved so far, and is inspiring action in young people by developing their connection with nature.

The gardens and National Education Nature Park programme are part of the Natural History Museum's ambitious Urban Nature Movement, an initiative which aims to help people feel more connected to nature and more confident in their ability to protect it.

It's a cause clearly close to the hearts of the Prince and Princess of Wales, as Kate is currently spearheading her 'Mother Nature' project to highlight humanity's connection to the natural world, while William's annual Earthshot Prize has reaffirmed the couple's commitment to tackle the world's biggest climate challenges.

The Princess has spoken in depth about how she turned to nature as a source of comfort and solace during her cancer diagnosis last year, even calling it her 'sanctuary' in a video released in May to mark the start of Mental Health Awareness Week. Kate said at the time: 'Over the past year, nature has been my sanctuary. 'The natural world's capacity to inspire us, to nurture us and help us heal and grow is boundless and has been understood for generations.

'It is through nature, that we can fully understand the true interconnectedness of all things, the importance of balance and the importance of renewal and resilience. Connecting to nature helps us to experience a deeper sense of ourselves, the world around us, and each other.'

In a follow-up video titled 'Summer' released last month, Kate again released a personal message about her connection with nature.

She said: 'Our lives flourish when we cherish the bonds of love and friendship. It has never been more important to appreciate the value of one another, and of Mother Nature. Here's to Summer. C'.

In 2019, Her Royal Highness launched the 'Back to Nature' garden at the Chelsea Flower Show to spotlight the power of nature in enriching early childhood development. The Princess has also had a longtime relationship with the Scouts which focuses on enabling children and young people to experience the outdoors and natural world.

The gardens first opened in July 2024 and are intended to serve as a 'living laboratory', where visitors and scientists can monitor wildlife in an urban environment.

Epping hotel resident guilty of sex assault of girl

A man whose arrest led to protests outside a hotel in Epping has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a woman.

Hadush Kebatu, from Ethiopia, touched the girl and said he

"wanted to have a baby" with her during incidents in Epping, Essex, on 7 and 8 July. His arrest led to a wave of demonstrations outside The Bell Hotel, where Kebatu was staying as an asylum seeker.

A judge at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court also found him guilty of harassing the girl, inciting her to engage in sexual activity and an attempted sexual assault, and warned him to expect a prison sentence. Kebatu attempted to kiss the girl and placed his hand on her thigh, as well as asking her to kiss another child in front of him, the court heard.

When a woman intervened he also placed his hand on her thigh, which she said made her feel "shocked and uncomfortable", before she called the police.

Kebatu told the judge he had been living at The Bell Hotel for about a week before his arrest, having travelled through Sudan, Libya, Italy and France to get to the UK.

He insisted during his threeday trial he was "not a wild animal", adding: "I can't do these kind of things, this is anti-Christian – these are just children, innocent children."

But District Judge Christopher Williams said Kebatu created "a version of events he'd only decided upon when he took the witness stand". During the trial, one witness told the court he heard Kebatu telling the girls "come back to Africa, you would be a good wife" on 7 July.

They had been eating pizza in Epping town centre when they were propositioned by the defendant, who invited them back to The Bell Hotel.

"Out of nowhere, he said: 'I want one baby from you and one baby from your friend'," the girl told police. Kebatu was then seen telling her she was pretty and attempting to kiss her on a bench the following day, before placing his hand on her thigh.

She told detectives she "froze" during the encounter and told Kebatu "no, I'm 14", but claimed he responded "age did not matter".

"I felt sick to my stomach. I didn't think a fully grown man would think it was OK to do that," she added. Kebatu was overheard telling the girls he was from Africa and paid €2,500 (£2,155) to arrive in the UK on a "rubber dinghy", the court heard.

At the trial, he gave his date of birth as December 1986, making him 38, but court records suggested he was 41.
