Mandelson sacked as US ambassador over Jeffrey Epstein relationship

Peter Mandelson has been sacked as the UK’s ambassador to the US over his relationship with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Sir Keir Starmer told the Labour grandee to “withdraw” from the role, a Foreign Office minister confirmed on Thursday morning.

It comes after emails, unearthed by the Sun and Bloomberg, show Lord Mandelson had supported Epstein when the banker was being investigated for sexual offences. Stephen Doughty told the Commons that Britain’s most senior diplomat in Washington had been removed.

"In light of additional information in emails written by Peter Mandelson, the Prime Minister has asked the Foreign Secretary to withdraw him as ambassador to the United States,” the Foreign Office minister said.

"The emails show that the depth and extent of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein is materially different

from that known at the time of his appointment." He added that Lord Mandelson's suggestion that Epstein's “first conviction was wrongful”, had been a major point in the Prime Minister’s decision to sack him. Lord Mandelson is reported to have told Epstein to "fight

for early release" shortly before he was sentenced to 18 months in prison. He told him, "I think the world of you" the day before the disgraced late banker began his sentence for soliciting prostitution from a minor in June 2008.

Mr Doughty said: "In

particular, Lord Mandelson's suggestion that Jeffrey Epstein's first conviction was wrongful and should be challenged is new information. "And in light of that, and mindful, as we all are, of the victims of Epstein's appalling crimes, he has been withdrawn as

ambassador with immediate effect."

Lord Mandelson this week spoke out about the scandal, admitting he fears more will come out and saying he had a “tremendous sense of regret” over his previous friendship. It comes after the Prime Minister on Wednesday insisted he still had “confidence” in his ambassador when he faced questions in the Commons over a 2003 birthday note in which the peer described Epstein as his “best pal”. The timing of his sacking causes a diplomatic headache ahead of Donald Trump's state visit next week, with the US president facing questions over his own ties with Epstein. James Roscoe, the Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy Washington, has been appointed interim ambassador and will oversee MrTrump’s state visit, Downing Street has confirmed.

Farage faces questions over who funded £885,000 Clacton constituency home

Desk report:

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage faces pressure to account for how his partner paid for a £885,000 home after a BBC investigation raised further questions about his previous explanation.

The Clacton MP has denied avoiding more than £44,000 in additional stamp duty on the purchase of the constituency home by putting it in his partner Laure Ferrari's name, saying that she bought it with her own funds.

He suggested that she was able to afford to buy the fourbedroom home, which was bought without a mortgage, because she comes from a wealthy French family. However, the BBC has examined French property and company records and has been unable to find evidence that Ferrari's parents have the means to give their daughter a significant contribution towards the purchase of the home.

It comes as Farage revealed that he has taken specialist legal advice from a taxation King's Counsel on the purchase despite claiming he wasn't involved.

If the Reform leader was the source of funds used

for the home, which he has previously denied, it would be legal for his partner to use them to buy the property in her name and pay the lower rate of stamp duty. But it would open Farage to charges of hypocrisy and seeking to avoid tax,

particularly after he criticised former Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner last week for avoiding stamp duty.

He said his partner was the sole legal and beneficial owner of the property. Stamp duty row

The property at the centre

of questions for the Reform leader is a four-bedroom house with a heated swimming pool in Frintonon-Sea, Essex.

It was bought on 11 November last year. A few days earlier, amid questions in a television interview about how many times he had been to Clacton, Farage said he had "just exchanged contracts on a house that I'll be living in there".

"Is that good enough? How much time does Keir Starmer spend in his constituency?," he added.

It later emerged that the £885,000 home had been bought by his partner Laure Ferrari who is listed on Land Registry documents as the sole owner. It was bought without borrowing any money for a mortgage.

The ownership of the home prompted accusations that Farage had structured the purchase in order to avoid paying additional tax.

What you need to know about women’s health

Keeping on top of our health and wellbeing is important all year round, but for International Women’s Day this year (Sunday 8th March), we ask the experts to share their advice and answer some of our common questions. Are my periods normal?

Dr Sue Mann, Clinical Director for Women’s Health says many women will have questions about their periods or menstrual cycle.

“People’s periods are very different but if your period is getting in the way of your normal life or changes then you should contact your GP surgery.”

Changes can include them getting longer, heavier or painful, becoming irregular or stopping, bleeding in between periods or after sex.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMT) can also affect anyone who has periods and typically happens in the second half of the cycle before the period starts. Common symptoms include mood swings, feeling depressed, irritable, anxious or emotional, bloating and headaches.

Dr Mann advises: “Keeping a healthy, balanced diet and taking regular exercise can help with managing symptoms. Paracetamol and ibuprofen can help with pain. Your GP surgery may also recommend other treatments that can help.”

When will I go through menopause?

Menopause is a natural stage of life when your periods end because the ovaries stop releasing eggs and producing reproductive hormones. It usually occurs from the ages of 45 to 55 but can be earlier or later.

Dr Ewa Craven, a GP and Menopause Specialist and Clinical Women’s Health Lead for Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board explains: “Women experience menopause differently. Some have no problems whatsoever, whilst others are seriously affected – often at a time of life when they’re juggling different roles and responsibilities.

When it comes to treatment, not everyone is getting the same level of help. Black and Asian women are less likely than average to receive hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Barriers such as social stigma, not wanting to complain about symptoms, or a lack of knowledge means some women are suffering in silence.

“If you’re struggling with any symptoms of menopause I’d urge you to speak with a healthcare professional. There are treatments that can help. I know it can be difficult to speak up, but as a doctor I’d want to rule out other causes for these problems too.”

What is HRT and is it safe?

The main treatment for menopause symptoms is HRT which replaces hormones that are at low levels. It can be given as patches, gels, sprays, tablets, pessaries, or creams.

Dr Craven advises: “There are many benefits in starting HRT during ‘perimenopause’, when you

have menopause symptoms but before your periods stop. It works best when lifestyle adjustments are made at the same time –eating more healthily, increasing physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight all help.”

Studies show that, for many women, HRT may have more benefits than risks, such as reducing the risk of heart or bone disease.

Dr Craven adds: “Risk of some types of cancer when taking HRT is minimal. It applies more to those who are at higher risk already because of their lifestyle (including smoking or drinking alcohol) or family history.

“As a menopause specialist, I’ve supported women to take it safely, so encourage others to seek advice on whether it could help them. Help is also available with prescription costs including a prepayment certificate for HRT.”

Find out more about hormone replacement therapy and how to save money with prescription costs.

Can natural remedies help with menopause?

A good sleep routine, relaxation exercises, a healthy diet (including calcium-rich foods such as milk, yoghurt or kale) and regular weight-bearing exercise can boost your mood and your health.

Dr Bola Owolabi, a GP and National Director of Healthcare Inequalities says: “This is a great time to look at your lifestyle. Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you plan on using natural and herbal remedies. Just like medicines, they are not suitable for everyone and might affect medications you are already taking for another condition.”

What about vitamin D?

Joint pain and weak bones can affect some women during menopause and vitamin D keeps our bones, teeth and muscles healthy. Although sunlight on our skin helps to produce vitamin D naturally, it can be difficult to get outside during the winter months.

And even as the weather starts getting warmer, if you wear clothes that cover up your skin, spend a lot of time indoors or if you have darker skin, you may not make enough vitamin D from the sunlight.

The government advises everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter, but you may decide to take supplements all year round. Calcium is also important for bone health, but most people take adequate calcium in their diet. People who do not eat dairy which contains a lot of calcium should make sure they eat other calcium rich foods such as oily fish and green vegetables.

Am I at risk of getting breast cancer?

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK and around 1 in 7 women are diagnosed with it during their lifetime. Abnormal cells form, divide and cause tumours which can spread throughout the body if they aren’t spotted and treated.

Dr Owolabi says: “Any one of us can get breast cancer at any age, although most women diagnosed are over the age of 50.

“Everyone should check their breasts regularly for lumps, changes in shape or size, changes in their nipple or any discharge or rash. It helps to learn what looks and feels normal for you.

“And no matter what gender you are, if you notice changes, please make an appointment at your GP surgery. Most changes aren’t cancer, but it could be something that needs to be treated.”

Does breast cancer run in families?

Some people have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than others because other members of their family have had cancers. Having a mother, sister or daughter diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 50, approximately doubles the risk of breast cancer. This risk is higher when more close relatives have breast cancer, or if a relative developed breast cancer under the age of 50. But most women who have a close relative with breast cancer will never develop it

In the UK, breast cancer rates vary amongst women from different backgrounds, with higher rates in White women. Although rates are lower in women with Black or South Asian heritage, they tend to have more advanced breast cancer when they are diagnosed.

Black women are at a higher risk of triple negative breast cancer which is a more aggressive and faster growing cancer. Diagnosing it as soon as possible means treatment can start sooner.

“Women diagnosed with breast cancer don’t always know their family history. But if you’re worried, contact your GP surgery as there are tests to check if you have these genes,” Dr Owolabi adds.

Breast screening prevents an estimated 1,300 deaths each year

Women between the ages of 50 and before their 71st birthday are eligible for free NHS breast screening every 3 years. You’ll be automatically invited if you’re registered with a GP between the ages of 50 to 53, but if you haven’t received an invite by the age of 53, or if you are older than 71 and want to continue screening, you can contact your local screening service to arrange an appointment.

Dr Owolabi says, “Screening saves lives as cancers can be

my last test and initially I didn’t want to speak to anyone about my results. I felt like it was a taboo topic, partly with the fear of having cancer and partly because it wasn’t spoken about much. I’m Arab and mixed race so for me, there was the shame in our culture around sex. It’s often internalised and you don’t really talk to others in the community about it. And my generation didn’t have HPV vaccines at school either.

diagnosed and treated earlier –often before you can even see or feel any changes yourself.

“The mammogram takes just a few minutes and is completed by a female mammographer. They will try to make the experience comfortable for you and explain everything that will happen.”

More than two million women a year attend breast screening. Around four in every 100 need further checks, and out of these four, one will have cancer.

Around 2,700 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed in England every year, but this could be something of the past – thanks to cervical screening and the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination.

Cervical screening is offered to women from the age of 25 to 64. A small sample of cells are taken from the cervix and they are checked for high-risk HPV which causes nearly all cervical cancers, and is linked to other cancers including mouth, and head and neck.

Dr Shehla Imtiaz-Umer, a GP in the Midlands explains: “HPV is nothing to be embarrassed about and doesn’t mean a partner has been unfaithful. Many of us will have HPV at some stage in our lives and in a lot of cases, your immune system will naturally get rid of HPV.”

If HPV is found and you have abnormal cell changes, you might need a simple procedure to look at your cervix, called a colposcopy. A small sample of cells might be taken to test how much change has occurred in your cells.

Dr Imtiaz-Umer adds: “If changes to your cervical cells are detected early, we have effective treatments to remove any abnormal cells caused by the high-risk HPV infection, to prevent cancer.”

Let’s talk about HPV

Following her screening appointment at the age of 25, Jenna learned that she had HPV and it had caused cervical cell changes (abnormal cells). She had treatment to remove these cells and tells us her story:

I had some cell changes since

The team were fantastic at my colposcopy appointment. They gave me two options – having my changed cells removed, or waiting six months to see if the cells had gone back to normal by themselves. I decided to have treatment. The team explained the potential risks, but for me there was no question – I didn’t want to worry about it developing into cancer.

Luckily for me, the procedure was totally painless. At my next colposcopy, everything was clear and I’m back to having regular cervical screening tests every three years. That minor inconvenience might have saved my life, so I’m passionate about sharing my experience to hopefully encourage someone to book their screening.”

What is the HPV vaccine?

NHS England has committed to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040 and along with cervical screening, the HPV vaccine is crucial to achieve this. Most types of HPV are harmless, but some types are linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer.

The vaccine is recommended for children aged 12 to 13 years old (year 8) and can be given in schools (or in community clinics for those not in school). If your child has missed their vaccine, you can contact your school nurse, school vaccination team or GP surgery. It is available for girls under 25 or boys born after 1 September 2006.

If you’re aged under 25 and haven’t been vaccinated, you can still ask your GP to vaccinate you. Find out more about the HPV vaccine

What if I’m scared about my appointment?

Dr Mann says we need to make sure breast and cervical screening are accessible and acceptable to everyone. “We’re here to help people take up these life-saving services. As staff, we know you might feel very nervous or vulnerable, so we need to help you understand the procedure and feel comfortable.

“Before your appointment, you can ask for a female clinician, or talk to someone if you have had a traumatic past experience, suffered abuse, a difficult pregnancy or just feel scared about it. Your healthcare practitioner can make adjustments and you can bring someone with you if you need. Although the tests are usually very quick, you can ask to stop at any point if you want to. Please don’t hesitate to ask a healthcare professional if anything’s on your mind.”

New This Girl Can campaign champions South Asian Muslim women in sport and physical activity

Desk report: Sport England’s groundbreaking This Girl Can launches today with a powerful new campaign, We Like the Way You Move, redefining what women getting active looks like and championing under-represented groups, including South Asian Muslim women.

Thirteen street-cast women from across England take centre stage in the TV advert, shown moving in ways that reflect their real lives – from family bike rides, dancing in the kitchen and pregnancy yoga, to wheelchair rugby, boxing and walking football.

Soundtracked by a reimagined version of the BodyRockers’ iconic track I Like the Way, the campaign comes as a new study reveals how far the world of sport and physical activity still has to go in representing all women.

Using AI-powered analysis of over 4,000 publicly available photos from sports clubs, community centres, parks, gyms, swimming pools and other leisure facilities across England, sourced via Google Maps, the study found that Black women, South Asian women, women with disabilities, older women and pregnant women are almost entirely erased from the picture of sport and physical activity presented online.

Findings from the analysis included that women of colour were virtually invisible. Out of 8,559 women pictured, only 61 were South Asian, despite South Asian women making up 6.8% of the population (2021 Census data). Almost half of these images were confined to London-based facilities, with entire regions showing next to no representation of women of colour.

Despite being unseen in the world of sports and physical activity, data from Sport England reveals that South Asian Muslim women would feel more welcome if they were offered women-only sessions (47%), if there was flexibility with clothing/ dress (31%), and if there were staff who understand their needs (25%).

The same report reflected that holistic health benefits— especially those tied to better sleep, social connection, and self-empowerment— are powerful incentives for engaging in physical activity for South Asian Muslim women.

Kate Dale, Director of Marketing at This Girl Can and Sport England, said:

“A picture is worth a thousand words, and our findings show that some South Asian Muslim women remain underrepresented in physical activity spaces that should welcome them—

making it harder to feel they belong. When excluded, they miss out on the physical, mental, and social benefits of being active, which deepens health inequalities.

over four million women to get active in the past decade, inequality persists. We are here for the women left behind, and together we can change the picture of

32 from Walsall, is a mumof-three who is redefining what getting active looks like for herself and her family.

“Wearing a headscarf shouldn’t hold me back, so I don’t let it,” says Sara. “After struggling with my mental health, I realised I needed to look after myself as well as my family. Movement has lifted me – whether that’s cycling with my kids or carving out time on my own – it boosts my energy and reminds me that health is wealth. I want my children to see that staying active is for all of us.”

Yashmin Harun is Founder and Chair of Muslimah Sports Association, which offers women a safe and positive environment to participate in sports without compromising their religious or cultural beliefs. Yashmin, who is also a panel member across This Girl Can’s inaugural South Asian Muslim Women’s Advisory Panel said:

“South Asian Muslim women have long faced barriers to being active – from a lack of women-only spaces to limited flexibility with clothing. The availability of inclusive opportunities, such as those offered by Muslimah Sports Association and other community-led organisations like ours, show how, when provided with the right environment, many women are motivated to overcome their barriers and get active. With This Girl Can’s We Like the Way You Move campaign highlighting what South Asian Muslim women need, it’s an exciting time for providers to create spaces where we can move, belong, and thrive on our own terms.”

This Girl Can is inviting women everywhere to change the picture of what getting active looks like –by sharing their own ways of moving on social media using #ThisGirlCan and tagging This Girl Can.

Whether it’s a stretch in the living room, a kickabout in the park or a swim with friends, every woman’s story helps show that there’s no one way to be active.

Harry's tea with Charles could be small but significant step to reconciliation

Desk report: Prince Harry has met his father King Charles at Clarence House in London on Wednesday for their first face to face meeting since February 2024.

The clues have been scattered all over the place in recent months.

In his BBC interview in May, there was a distinct shift in tone from the prince.

After the years of raw, emotional media appearances, the Netflix documentary series, the searing criticism of the royal family in his memoir Spare, this was a different Prince Harry in front of the cameras.

"I would love a reconciliation with my family," he said. "There's no point in continuing to fight anymore. Life is precious."

Prince Harry had made his position clear. He wanted to see his father but was the King feeling the same way? A photograph in the Mail on Sunday in July showed the media

communications team representing Prince Harry meeting in London with the King's communications director. Two rival camps coming together and the image finding its way onto the front page of a national newspaper. Both sides denied leaking the photo but what it did was show there was a dialogue. A channel of

communication between both camps had opened.

And there has been a unified silence from both sides in recent days that has also been telling.

Neither side would be drawn on a date or time of any reunion.

We were making educated

guesses on when father and son might meet based on gaps in their diaries and who was planning to be where geographically.

In a family fallout riddled with mistrust and rancour, the two camps stayed very tight lipped about the possibility of a meeting. Their mutual silence held.

Prince Harry has been

Ministers must do more on Lifetime Isa reform, say MPs

in the UK this week for charity events, but has called the US home since 2020.

He has not seen King Charles in person since February 2024. The last time that they were together was soon after the King's cancer diagnosis when Prince Harry came to the UK for a brief meeting.

When the reunion finally happened on Wednesday afternoon both Buckingham Palace and Prince Harry's team were aligned afterwards in terms of stressing to the media that there would be no comment or guidance on the detail of conversations had at the meeting.

The Palace later confirmed that the King had a private tea with his son that lasted about 50 minutes, during a visit to the royal residence.

Afterwards he said of the King "yes, he's great" in response to reporters' questions.

Desk report: Ministers have not gone far enough in reforming Lifetime Isas (LISAs) despite being warned these products were not suitable for everyone, Treasury Committee has warned.

Ahead of the November Budget MPs also questioned whether LISAs in their current form were a good use of taxpayer money, as they are forecast to cost the government £3bn over five years.

Anyone aged under 40 can open a LISA to either help save towards retirement or buy a first home. You can put in up to £4,000 a year and the government will top it up by 25%.

In June, the committee found that LISAs were being mis-sold and did not suit everyone, and following a government response to its report, external MPs said ministers must go further. "The government has taken some steps towards improving the Lifetime ISA, but I do not believe they have gone far enough. The Lifetime ISA is a confused product that requires reform," said

Dame Meg Hillier, who chairs the committee.

Good use of money?

LISAs were launched in 2017 under the thenConservative government. Since then, 6% of eligible

adults have opened one, with about 1.3 million accounts still open, according to the most recent figures.

In its report, the committee said the LISA's dual purpose to help people

save for both the shortterm (for a first home) and long-term (for retirement) "makes it more likely consumers will choose unsuitable investment strategies".

Research by HM Revenue and Customs, based on a sample of LISA holders, found that 87% of those who had used their LISA to buy their first home said that they could have done so without one.

"Given that the LISA is forecast to cost the government £3bn over the next five years, this raises the question whether the LISA is a good use of taxpayers' money," said Dame Meg.

The government, in its response to the report, said that it kept all aspects of LISA policy under review.

The government gave some ground following the committee's description of the rules which penalise benefit claimants as "nonsensical".

Almost £10m of public money spent on subsidies for former PMs

Desk report:: Almost £10m of taxpayers’ money has been spent on funding the public lives of former prime ministers over the last three decades, a Guardian analysis has found.

All former PMs are able to claim up to £115,000 a year –until the end of their lives – in a subsidy to enable them to contribute to public life after they have left Downing Street.

The annual overall cost of the subsidy has more than doubled in recent years as there are more former prime ministers than in previous eras. Three of them – Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and John Major – have claimed more than £1m in the last decade.

The scheme, which is used to subsidise the private offices of ex-PMs, is coming under intense scrutiny after a leak of data from the Office of Boris Johnson. Cabinet Office rules stipulate that the former prime ministers must not use these public funds for private or commercial activities. The payments are only intended to help them to continue contributing to public life.

However, the Guardian has published a series of stories based on the leaked data, which was obtained by the US non-profit Distributed Denial of Secrets (DDoS), that suggest Johnson’s office has been involved in widespread commercial work. His office staff have helped vet and arrange more than 34 speeches, raising more than £5m in total, secure lucrative media contracts and work on business ventures in Venezuela, Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia.

Johnson has claimed £182,000 since leaving government to pay for staff salaries in the private office. He has not responded directly to the dozens of questions about his business activities but denied his office had misused the subsidy scheme.

“This story is rubbish,” he said, adding that the subsidy “has been used entirely in accordance with the rules. The Guardian should change its name to Pravda.” Crossparty senior politicians have called for Johnson’s taxpayer support to be investigated after the revelations.

Five other former prime ministers, Brown and Blair as well as David Cameron, Theresa May and Liz Truss, have released statements

confirming they fully comply with rules prohibiting the use of public funds for private business.

The revelations have thrown the spotlight on the little-known scheme, known as the public duty costs allowance (PDCA), which was set up in 1991. It was introduced, according to the Cabinet Office, to “assist former prime ministers still active in public life”.

Payments disbursed under the scheme “are made only to meet the actual cost of continuing to fulfil public duties. The costs are a reimbursement of incurred expenses for necessary administrative costs arising from their special position in public life.”

The payments are generally used to pay staff to run an office, for example replying to correspondence, handling requests for interviews and arranging official visits.

Major, while prime minister, set up the scheme in 1991 after allies of his predecessor, Margaret Thatcher, let it be known that she was struggling as a backbench MP. She had been ousted from Downing Street the previous year and reportedly found life difficult without secretaries and other aides. By piecing together figures from Cabinet Office annual reports and parliamentary answers, the Guardian has established that overall, the scheme has cost taxpayers at least £9.9m. In today’s figures, after adjusting for inflation, that total equates to more than £14m.

This is, however, an underestimate, as the government appears not to have published the annual cost of the scheme for 10 of the years it has been active.

Former PMs can claim up to £115,000 a year. This cap has been frozen since 2011. However, the annual cost has soared in recent years as more of them have claimed the subsidy, amid a rapid turnover of Conservative prime ministers in recent years.

They include Truss. She served for only 49 days, but the 50-year-old nonetheless qualifies for the PDCA allowance for the rest of her life – a total which is likely to run into millions. She has so far claimed £125,000.

Seven former PMs are currently claiming money from the scheme, compared with five who were eligible when it was established in the early 1990s.

In total, adjusting for inflation, ex-prime ministers claimed £858,000 in 2023-24, the

After the last page

latest available figures, up from £464,000 a decade earlier, and £337,000 in 199798. Blair and Major have claimed the highest totals since 2006 – £1.9m and £2m respectively – as they have almost always requested the maximum amount each year. Brown’s total is under these two, as his claims are usually under the maximum cap, and he left Downing Street more recently. After the Guardian’s revelations, Brown is calling for the rules to be tightened up to require former prime ministers to publicly declare their business interests. His spokesperson said: “Mr Brown favours former prime ministers being subject to public declarations of their business interests and has called for a stronger code on business appointments.”

Cameron has received £780,000 from the subsidy scheme since he left Downing Street in 2016. The rules meant that he did not submit claims while he had a spell as foreign secretary in Rishi Sunak’s administration.

May’s claims total nearly £400,000. Major and Sunak, who is understood not to claim the allowance, did not respond to requests for comment.

In a quirk that has not been fully explained, Nick Clegg, the deputy prime minister between 2010 and 2015, was given the right to claim PDCA funds from the scheme even though he never held the top job. He received a total of £445,000 over four years. In 2018, the last year he claimed the allowance, he became president of global affairs and communications at Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, where he was paid millions.

This article was amended on 11 September 2025. An earlier version said published data on public duty cost allowances (PDCA) was incomplete before 2013; in fact it has been brought to our attention that there were public records beyond the ones analysed by the Guardian going back to 2006. The article and graphics have therefore been updated to reflect the additional available data. The headline, which had referred to “more than £8m” being spent on PDCA subsidies, was also amended accordingly.

Nepal army says in talks with protesters to decide on interim leader

Desk report: Nepal’s army is resuming talks with protesters to pick an interim leader for the Himalayan nation, after violence that removed the

government of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, according to an army spokesperson.

Soldiers were patrolling the quiet streets of the capital Kathmandu for a second day on Thursday following the worst protests in decades, triggered by a social media ban that authorities rolled back after deadly protests this week. Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel meanwhile said he is seeking an end to the crisis engulfing the country.

“I am consulting and making every effort to find a way out of the current difficult situation in the country within the constitutional framework,” Paudel said in a statement.

“I appeal to all parties to be confident that a solution to the problem is being sought as soon as possible to address the demands of the protesting citizens.”

Paudel also urged Nepalis to “practice restraint and cooperate to maintain peace and order in the country”.

Army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet told the Reuters news agency earlier on Thursday that “initial talks are on and would continue today,” referring to the discussions on an interim leader. “We are trying to normalise the situation slowly.”

Al Jazeera’s Rob McBride, reporting from Kathmandu, said “there is an uneasy calm here on the streets.

“It does feel like an uneasy standoff at times because things are still extremely tense” as crowds gather routinely in front of the military headquarters before being pushed back by soldiers, he added. Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, who was Nepal’s first woman appointed to the job in 2016, is reportedly the frontrunner for interim leader, with her name suggested by many of those leading the protests.

“We see Sushila Karki for who she truly is – honest, fearless, and unshaken,” said Sujit Kumar Jha, 34, a supporter of the agitation. “She’s the right choice. When truth speaks, it sounds like Karki.” Karki, 73, has given her consent, but efforts are being made to find a constitutional route to appoint her, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

However, there were some differences over her candidature among the protesters, who were seeking to reach a unanimous decision, another source said.

Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah,

an independent politician who is popular among the young protesters, and several others have voiced support for Karki, but divisions within both the protest camp and mainstream parties leave Nepal’s political future unclear.

KP Khanal, an activist who was at the forefront of the protest, said many young demonstrators like him, who have not been invited to the talks, are watching developments cautiously.

“Nothing is looking clear. We were together during the peaceful protest, but the situation has changed after we dispersed,” he said.

Hope for ‘political solution’

The next big question, said Al Jazeera’s McBride, is whether an interim government can be formed and what it will look like.

“A lot of the groups that have led these protests … don’t necessarily see eye to eye and work together,” said McBride. “Some of them are in open conflict with each other, so it’s [a] difficult [situation] but the military is trying to facilitate this dialogue to lead to an interim government.”

The situation on the ground is “very tense; it could go either way at the moment”, said McBride. “The hope is that there will be a political solution to this situation.”

Shops, schools and colleges stayed shut in Kathmandu and surrounding areas, but some essential services had resumed.

A nationwide curfew first imposed on Tuesday night will remain in place until Friday.

Despite the extension, the army has eased restrictions to allow smoother movement for essential service workers.

In a statement issued late on Wednesday, it said domestic and international air travellers would also be permitted to move freely upon showing their tickets.

The death toll from the protests had risen to 31 by Thursday, local media reported. According to the Forensic Medicine Department at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, where dead bodies of protesters have been taken for postmortem, preliminary identities of 25 victims have been established so far. The identities of the remaining six deceased, one of whom is a woman, are not yet known, local English daily Kathmandu Post reported.
