Strong decline in coronavirus across England since January, React study shows

Bangla sanglap desk: There has been a "strong decline" in levels of coronavirus infections in England since January, say scientists tracking the epidemic. Imperial College London's React study found infections have dropped by two-thirds across England since lockdown began, with an 80% fall in London. But virus levels are still high, with one in 200 testing positive between 4 and 13 February. This is similar to levels seen in late September 2020. Although these are interim findings, based on more than 85,000 swab tests from randomly selected people, they suggest social distancing and restrictions are having an impact. Prof Paul Elliott, director of the programme at Imperial, said the drop in infection rates was "really encouraging".

It comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson prepares to receive new data on the effect of vaccines on the spread of coronavirus, ahead

of Monday's publication of a roadmap for easing the lockdown in England. Speaking on Wednesday he said it was "absolutely right" to take a "data not dates" approach to leaving lockdown, and stressed England would ease measures "cautiously". According to the Imperial College London team, during

early-to-mid-February 0.51% of people in the study tested positive in England, down from 1.57% in early January. In London, positive tests fell from 2.83% to 0.54% over six weeks. The study's author Prof Steven Riley described the fall in cases in London as "dramatic" and said there had been "a strong

downward trend since January - better than many hoped for", which is equivalent to a halving of infections every 15 days. The researchers estimated the R number - the average number of people one infected person will pass the virus on to - was around 0.72. But more than 20,000 Covid

patients are currently in hospital in the UK, and although new daily cases and hospital admissions are falling, they are still relatively high. NHS England figures show 80% of critical care beds were occupied in the week to 14 February, a slight fall from 83% the week before.

February is a month of inspiration for the Bengali nation, especially for the younger generation. Because those who led the language movement were the young men of Bengal. On that day, young people like Rafiq, Salam, Barkat, Safiur and Jabbar shed their blood to maintain the dignity of mother tongue Bengali. The sad alphabet was unchained in their blood, we got back the mother tongue developed Bengali nationality. Where this mother tongue is the pride of the youth, today the Bengali language is the most neglected among them. Our 21st February has now made place beyond our borders and has become a pride for the whole world. UNESCO has recognised 21st February as International Mother Language Day to honour sacrifices made by the youth of our nation for the mother tongue. No nation has had to sacrifice life for its mother tongue as we have done. We are proud of our language. The first Nobel Prize to Asia came through poems and songs written by Rabindranath Tagore written in our language. National anthem of not only Bangladesh but also of India was written in our language. Three hundred million people of the world speak this language, and it is the 6th most spoken language and second in the sub-continent. But sadly the country does not appear to have progressed well. We are yet to surpass our achievements on science and technology of the colonial days. Keeping in mind the hopes and aspirations of the common masses, with which they fought against a well-equipped army and achieved independence, we must take effective steps to walk on the path of progress. One thousandth part of the landmass of the world belongs to Bangladesh and 24 thousandths part of the population of the world, and the country is feeding this huge a population, giving

labour need to know some Bengali rather than making the poor skilled labourers learn the foreign language which does not enhance their skill in any way. Same argument can be put forward for many issues to realise that English is important which does not mean Bengali is unimportant. With thousands years of rich culture and literature we could lead the world in some ways while other countries are doing in other ways. But with great sorrow today we observe a big chunk of our own youngsters has no knowledge or interest in either Ekushey or Bengali just because English can ensure the life prosperity let alone the people from other nations. The only expectation in the language month is to enrich the Bengali language in the world with due respect to the mother tongue. Therefore, our new generation should respect the mother tongue Bengali and speak and use Bengali properly with respect. The young generation should always be vigilant so that we do not lose the Bengali language in the rush of English language. The young generation must be shown by setting an example of love for the Bengali language. We have to spread Bengali, the mother tongue acquired in our blood, through pride and arrogance at all levels. The youth should pay more attention to the practice of Bengali language and present the mother tongue to the nation as the pride of the youth at this time. The Bengali language, for which a bunch of young people gave their blood, must be made to stand on the world stage anew. Boris Johnson to focus on 'data, not dates' for lockdown easing

Bangla sanglap desk: Boris Johnson says it is "absolutely right" to take a "data not dates" approach to leaving lockdown, stressing England will ease measures "cautiously".

The prime minister said he would set out "what we can" in a road map for easing restrictions on Monday. "We want to be going one way from now on, based on the incredible vaccination rollout," he said. It follows a call from scientists for a dataled approach to lifting measures. Speaking at a mass vaccination centre in Cwmbran, south Wales, Mr Johnson said relaxation of measures would be done in "stages" and that the reopening of hospitality was one of the last things to return

after the first lockdown. "You have to remember from last year that we opened up hospitality fully as one of the last things that we did because there is obviously an extra risk of transmission from hospitality," he said.

Asked whether he agreed with a dataled approach, Mr Johnson said "I do think that's absolutely right" and said the relaxation of measures will be "based firmly on a cautious and prudent approach", in

UN to question UAE about Dubai ruler's daughter

Bangla sanglap desk: The United Nations has said it will raise the detention of Princess Latifa, the daughter of Dubai's ruler, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Princess Latifa has accused her father of holding her hostage in Dubai since she tried to flee the city in 2018. In secretly recorded videos shared with the BBC, Princess Latifa said she feared for her life. The footage prompted global calls for a UN investigation, while the UK said the videos were "deeply troubling". "We are concerned about it," UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said on Wednesday. He said the videos showed "a young woman in deep distress", adding that the UK would watch any developments from the

UN "very closely". But when asked whether sanctions could be imposed, Mr Raab said: "It's not clear to me that there would be the evidence to support that." Prime Minister Boris Johnson also said the government was

"concerned" but would "wait and see how [the UN] get on" with their investigation. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has said it would soon question the UAE about Princess Latifa.

"We will certainly raise these new developments with the UAE," spokesman Rupert Colville said. "Other parts of the UN human rights system with relevant mandates may also become involved once they have analysed the new

material". a spokesman said the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention could launch an investigation once Princess Latifa's videos have been analysed. "We are hoping [a UN investigation] will be decisive in finally

getting Princess Latifa released," Rodney Dixon, a lawyer who presented the case to the UN, told the BBC. "The UN needs to have a very serious meeting directly with those who are holding [her] and make sure an agreement is reached so she can be released," he said. Mr Dixon added: "The UN as the international body responsible for implementing international law can ensure that is exactly what happens." Princess Latifa's father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is one of the richest heads of state in the world, the ruler of Dubai and vice-president of the UAE. The UAE has close relations with a number of Western countries, including the US and UK, which consider it a strategic ally.
