Message from Executive Director & Chair At its core, the Banff Forum is a convenor. For two decades the organization has gathered some of Canada’s most inspiring leaders and engaged citizens working across regions and sectors to improve the lives of Canadians. The community has grown and evolved over time, welcoming new members and new perspectives each year. The organization itself has also evolved in that time, growing from a volunteer-led initiative in 2002, into a registered charity in 2021. The organization is now professionally managed by full-time staff and guided by a dedicated Board of Directors, who are themselves guided by a set of clear governing documents. The Banff Forum has always been strictly non-partisan and non-ideological. It doesn’t produce reports or make policy recommendations, doesn’t advocate or lobby for an agenda. So, how do we measure our impact? We consider two metrics: the impact our events have on our community members, and the impact our members have on their own communities – locally, nationally, or internationally. To measure our impact on our community we conduct surveys and gather testimonials from them annually to capture feedback on their experience of our events. We use that feedback to help us shape our work and inform our strategies each year. In this report you’ll hear directly from our community about the impact the Banff Forum has had on their lives, careers, ways of thinking, and the initiatives they have developed or amplified through their participation in the Forum. We’re incredibly proud to share these impacts with you, to celebrate our community’s successes over two decades, and to honour the contributions of the many people who have helped shape and inspire the Banff Forum.

Message de la directrice exécutive & président du conseil d’administration Dans son essence même, le Banff Forum est un rassembleur. Depuis deux décennies, l’organisation rassemble certains des leaders et des citoyens les plus inspirants et engagés du Canada qui travaillent dans diverses régions et secteurs pour améliorer la vie des Canadiens. La communauté a grandi et évolué au fil du temps, accueillant de nouveaux membres et de nouvelles perspectives chaque année. L’organisation elle-même a également évolué au cours de cette période, passant d’une initiative menée par des bénévoles en 2002 à un organisme de bienfaisance enregistré en 2021. L’organisation est maintenant gérée professionnellement par du personnel à temps plein et guidée par un conseil d’administration dévoué, qui sont euxmêmes guidés par des documents d’administration et de gouvernance clairs. Le Banff Forum a toujours été strictement non-partisan et non-idéologique. Il ne fait pas de recommandations de politique, ne prône ni ne fait de lobbying pour un agenda quelconque. Alors, comment mesure-t-on notre impact ? Nous tenons compte de deux paramètres : l’impact de nos événements sur les membres de notre communauté et l’impact de nos membres sur leurs propres communautés – à l’échelle locale, nationale ou internationale. Pour mesurer notre impact sur notre communauté, chaque année, nous effectuons des sondages et recueillons des témoignages auprès d’eux afin de recueillir des commentaires sur leur expérience à nos événements. Nous utilisons annuellement cette rétroaction pour nous aider à façonner notre travail et à orienter nos stratégies. Dans ce rapport, vous entendrez directement notre communauté parler de l’impact que le Forum Banff a eu sur leur vie, carrière, façon de penser, et les initiatives qu’ils ont développées ou amplifiées grâce à leur participation au Forum. Nous sommes extrêmement fiers de partager ces retombées avec vous, de célébrer les succès de notre communauté au cours de ces deux décennies et d’honorer les contributions des nombreuses personnes qui ont contribué à façonner et à inspirer le Banff Forum.

Message from the Founders // Message des fondateurs When we invited participants to the first Banff Forum nearly 20 years ago, we had a very basic idea in mind: when you bring good people together, great things happen. At the time, there were few places where Canadian leaders early in their careers could come together to exchange their diverse political, social, regional, and sectoral perspectives – not to convince one another, but to better understand one another. Our first Forum took place in the aftermath of the Quebec referendum, when western alienation was on the rise and the shadow of the 9/11 attacks had thrown global geopolitics into turmoil. Today, as we see increasing divisions across the nation once again, and the global system still unsettled, opportunities to discuss and debate the most pressing issues of the day, with a view to bridging the gap between our experiences and perspectives, are as important as ever. We are deeply grateful to the many dedicated members of the Board, staff, and community who have contributed to building the Banff Forum into the vital element in Canada’s public policy debate that it has become. It has been a pleasure to watch this organization grow. // Lorsque nous avons invité les participants au premier Banff Forum il y a près de 20 ans, nous avions une idée très simple en tête : lorsque vous réunissez de bonnes personnes, de grandes choses se produisent. À l’époque, il existait peu d’endroits où les dirigeants canadiens en début de carrière pouvaient se réunir pour échanger leurs diverses perspectives politiques, sociales, régionales et sectorielles – non pas pour se convaincre mutuellement, mais pour mieux se comprendre. Notre premier Forum a eu lieu au lendemain du référendum québécois, alors que l’aliénation de l’Ouest était à la hausse et l’ombre des attentats du 11 septembre avait mis la géopolitique mondiale dans la tourmente. Aujourd’hui, alors que nous constatons une fois de plus des divisions croissantes au sein de la nation et que le système mondial reste instable, les occasions de discuter et de débattre des questions du jour les plus pressantes, dans le but de combler le fossé entre nos expériences et perspectives sont plus importantes que jamais. Nous sommes fortement reconnaissants envers les nombreux membres dévoués du conseil d’administration, du personnel, et de la communauté qui ont contribué à faire du Banff Forum un élément vital au débat sur les de politiques publiques du Canada. Ce fut un plaisir de voir cette organisation grandir.

Banff Forum Today // Forum Banff aujourd’hui The Banff Forum is one of Canada’s preeminent public policy forums. The Forum brings a diverse and exceptional group of engaged participants together with respected thought-leaders and decision-makers to discuss key national and international issues of the day. Our aim is to reinvigorate public debate in Canada by welcoming young leaders to enhance their leadership skills and address challenges in a unique and collaborative manner. We do this by convening a retreat each Fall, alternating between Banff and a different location in Canada, and by continuing those conversations year-round at events events across the country. The annual Forum engages approximately 200 participants, with a focus on attracting those under the age of 40. Participants are chosen through an open application process and are selected because they have achieved significant success in their chosen area of expertise, and because they are actively involved in corporate, social, environmental or political communities. Although they represent a broad spectrum of perspectives and professional sectors, they share a common desire to impact our country – and our world – for the better. The Forum itself is truly a one-of-a-kind event. It’s an opportunity for intimate and in-depth exchanges between leading experts and a group of exceptionally passionate and motivated young leaders. Our panel sessions are designed to encourage debate and discussion. They take place in an informal setting and are highly interactive. Because the sessions are completely off-the-record, speakers and participants feel free to express genuine opinions candidly. The Banff Forum is strictly non-partisan and non-ideological. Fundamentally, the goal of the Banff Forum is to bring together Canadians with diverse perspectives, from multiple fields and geographies. Our participants are the leaders of today and tomorrow, and we aim to equip them with tools they can use to create better policies, better businesses, better communities, and a better Canada. // Le Banff Forum est l’un des forums de politique publique les plus importants du Canada. Le Forum réunit un groupe varié et exceptionnel de participants engagés et des leaders d’opinion et de décideurs respectés pour discuter des grandes questions nationales et internationales de l’heure. Notre objectif est de revigorer le débat public au Canada en accueillant de jeunes leaders pour améliorer leurs compétences en matière de leadership et relever les défis d’une manière unique et collaborative. Pour ce faire, nous organisons une retraite chaque automne, en alternance entre Banff et un endroit différent au Canada, et nous poursuivons ces conversations tout au long de l’année lors d’événements organisés partout au pays. Reconciliation Commitment // Engagement envers la réconciliation The Banff Forum recognizes that acknowledging, understanding, and confronting Canada’s troubling record of wrongs towards Indigenous peoples is essential in order to move towards reconciliation. With the core mission of our organization in mind, we commit to advancing public policy discourse on the injustices faced by Indigenous peoples that have flowed and continue to flow from Canada’s laws, policies, and practices. This support ranges from discounted registration fees to full scholarships covering registration and travel. Dozens of outstanding leaders have been able to join the Banff Forum community through this program. Reflections from Banffers // Reflexions de Banffeurs Every year we ask delegates and speakers to provide feedback on their experiences at the Banff Forum. We use this feedback to measure the success of each event and to inform our future planning. This was my first time attending the Banff Forum, and I was blown away by the experience. Having such important public policy conversations in Northern Canada was incredibly impactful – being in Yellowknife really helped put some of the issues in context.

One of the benefits of the Forum is introducing leaders to parts of the country with which they are not familiar and vice versa. Helps to round out our understanding and appreciation of Canada and its vast diversity.

I really enjoyed meeting Banff Forum members and talking with them about the panels and presentations we experienced. I think that’s the true value of the forum, the conversation after the panel where you debate, discuss and hear from people with different life experiences.

There was something incredibly valuable about the connection between the content and the location (Saskatchewan). It made for rich and relevant discussion, particularly for those who had been on the tour prior to the formal forum. Having moderators who force conversation below 30,000 feet was great.

The Banff Forum is an inspiring weekend to consider issues from bold and different perspectives.

The Banff Forum is the best conference I’ve ever attended. I loved the fact that most of the speakers and panellists participated in the whole event, and we had opportunities to interact with them outside of their formal presentation time.

The Banff Forum community, as always, asked hard questions of each other, ourselves, and our presenters, that allowed me to reach beyond my area of expertise and learn something new about politics, industry, and other sectors.

This was my first Banff Forum - wow! What an incredible gathering of thought leaders and change makers. I really appreciated how intimate the conference felt, and the opportunity to engage in dialogue with leaders from all sectors of society on some of the most important issues of our time. As an Indigenous person, I especially appreciated the concentration on Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples this year. Standout experiences for me include getting to hear from, and speak directly with, AFN Chief Perry Bellgarde and Chief of the Cowessess First Nation Cadmus Delorme. I cannot wait until next year!

Initiative Impacts // Impacts d’initiative Conversations at the Banff Forum, between engaged leaders who are enthusiastic about changing the country for the better, have led to the creation of some remarkable initiatives. These are not formally affiliated with the Forum, the credit is entirely due to the intrepid individuals driving these projects forward. But we are incredibly proud to highlight the kind of great work that comes from bringing the right people together at the right time, and connecting them with a network that can provide the support and guidance to bring these nascent ideas into reality. This selection of initiatives led by Banffers, whose ideas were developed or accelerated by their participation in the Banff Forum, represents the very best of what we hope to nurture within our community. //

Gull Bay Documentary During the 2017 Forum, following a talk by Perry Bellegarde, fellow Banffer Darrell Brown approached me to continue a conversation about food security in remote communities. He told me about an incredible group of people working on a cuttingedge solar energy project in Kiashke Zaaging Anishinaabek-Gull Bay First Nation (KZA). That conversation sparked the basis of a partnership between community members and journalism students that resulted in the production of a multimedia feature story on climate leadership in KZA. It was ultimately published on CTV and won a series of industry awards, yet most importantly the collaboration inspired a new, multi-layered research project that will study media and reconciliation and more specifically, the decolonization of journalism education. I am now leading an SSHRC-funded study into alternative models of conciliatory and collaborative journalism, in partnership with Indigenous Clean Energy and three more remote communities. I will be forever grateful to the Banff Forum community for providing the spark for me to embark on this journey. Canada World Canada World: Voices for Women and Girls is an initiative led by Journalists for Human Rights and delivered in collaboration with leading media partners in Canada, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tunisia, Turkey, across the Middle East. Its goals are to strengthen democracy through strengthened media, to better inform local communities on human rights - especially those of women and girls - and to promote greater transparency and accountability from local and international authorities towards their constituents in developing countries. The initiative was born out of the 2016 Banff Forum, where I shared a vision of how Canada could lead through media development, working with national media partners on programming that provided training and support for journalists worldwide. It’s had significant impacts to date: it contributed to the Kenyan government including provisions for trafficked women, as well as women and girls fleeing domestic violence, as part of their strategy to rebuild after Covid and beyond; it significantly increased the number of women parliamentarians entering Cabinet and forming government in the Democratic Republic of Congo; and it ensured mental health supports for the Syrian refugee population living in Turkey through Covid and beyond. More than a dozen Banffers contributed to shaping and refining this initiative in its earliest days. Teach For Canada Teach For Canada’s mission is to support student success by recruiting and developing committed educators in partnership with northern First Nations. The organization’s vision is a country where every child has access to highquality education in their community. Inspired by the leadership of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action on Education, Teach For Canada teachers emphasize a spirit of reciprocal learning in the classroom and community. The initial idea of Teach For Canada came out of Action Canada in 2010-2011. In 2013 we presented the still nascent idea at the Banff Forum and we received so much helpful feedback and support. It’s hard to put a number on how valuable the relationships forged through the Banff community have been on Teach for Canada’s development over the years. The Banff Forum has been a place to workshop new ideas, raise awareness about northern education, and receive critical feedback, insight, and perspective from the brain trust within the community. Since 2015, Teach For Canada has worked at the direction of northern First Nations leaders, education experts, principals, teachers, and many others to recruit and select teachers who have the motivations, aptitude, and fit to be successful in a northern First Nation. Whose Land Whose.Land is a web and mobile app that uses GIS technology to help users identify and learn about traditional territories, Treaties, and First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. The app can be used for learning about the territory your home or business is situated on, finding information for a land acknowledgement, and learning about the treaties and agreements that have shaped what we now call Canada. The initiative was born from a connection made at the Banff Forum, and has been shaped and guided by Banffers since its inception. It developed as a collaboration between TakingITGlobal, Canadian Roots Exchange, and Bold Realities, which at the time were led by Banffers who identified the need to create a platform to increase knowledge and awareness of Indigenous territories, communities and Treaties and to help create dialogue around Indigenous territory recognition and acknowledgement. The site recently passed over a million page views, demonstrating a clear desire for people to have access to this information. It is a tool to empower settler Canadians to learn more about the territories on which they live and work.
