Giants & Pilgrims Bellwether

Giants & Pilgrims call themselves “a marriage of art and music.” Aptly, Bellwether, the Greeley group’s forthcoming full-length, feels like an impressionist painting, lush with color and rife with rustic detail. The picture painted here explores three examples of sacred spaces via an array of instruments and close mic’d vocals whispering almost mythic indie-folk wisdom.

The project’s ringmaster Timothy Coons describes the three sacred spaces as “moments in life that take your breath away (The Cathedral), the holiness of the everyday (represented by The Table), and perhaps the most difficult: The Dark Field. It’s in that space that we feel alone, yet some of the best growth for our soul happens,” he says. We’re lucky that Coons and crew let us in on those dark spots - it’s in their vulnerability where Giants & Pilgrims show the most strength.

“Settled Down” opens the album in a cinematic hilltop fog with a trusty, whistling melody at the vocalist’s’ side. “Everything Gets Better” feels like a deep cut by The National with fluttering snare drums, subtly proud piano and a deep, monotone vocal. Like love emerging from the magic clockwork of some nimble machine, “Guide Your Wild Eyes Down” spins a loom of wonder, while “Empty” drifts along with the putter of soft saxophones evoking a folkier Future Islands. The album’s finish, “David And I” culminates with a tea kettle vocal harmony of “joy.” Their love for subtle, sonic textures create the palette of one of the most nuanced albums coming out of Colorado this month.

And while sweeping major choruses of “Gloria” could easily slip Bellwether into the realm of cheesy Christian music, they don’t. Deftly, Giants & Pilgrims manage to keep an honesty in this recording, using organic sounds, acoustic instruments, and tame production. Looking at these songs through the microscope of this intimate recording, we believe them. Regardless of doctrine, we identify with the raw emotions Coons and his band display through their lush minimalism.

Recently, I was given the opportunity to sit down with Tyja3’s newly released project 3Piece.

Tyja3 bleeds hyphy and embodies fun on the project, bringing a very new school vibe to old school braggadocio bars and flow. Even the deeper track “Time of My Life Life” keeps the momentum of the feel-good vibes while still giving a story of facing adversity. For old heads on the search for a nostalgia kick, tracks like “Dope” and “Forces” give the feeling that Tyja3 just snatched the mic from the DJ and started spittin’ his heart out.

Like any other project, there are

ups and downs. You might not love everything on 3Piece, but everyone can find something to love. To prove my point, the song “Moxi” is very reminiscent of early Hollywood Undead songs; a totally different genre from the rest of the record. Praise to Tyja3 for covering everyone from MCs to the emo kids chilling at smoker’s corner. From the bars to the hooks that caught me off guard, I wasn’t ever really bored listening to this project.

If you’re an artist setting out to make this kind of music, 3Piece sets the standard. Strive to make your project at the very least live up to this one. I know a lot of people making this “concert” type of music - none seemed to have kept me listening the entire way through like this one did. However, I hope Tyja3 decides to get more personal in the future on his projects. That’s coming from someone who respects and enjoys what he’s doing. Go listen for yourself and share around. Your local music scene is waiting for you to discover what it has to offer.

Ron – Calexico, The Thread That Keeps Us On the 15-track new Calexico album, I can hear the almost-30-year musical history Joey Burns and John Convertino have between them. Ever since their pre-Friends Of Dean Martinez days, they’ve been a top notch rhythm section, playing Latin-tinged grooves for Victoria Williams, Richard Bruckner and more. This 9th studio album has moments of techno/world beat (“Another Space”), a spooky “Dead In The Water” and three under-2 minute instrumentals (more potential music beds for NPR’s This American Life show). At times you may feel a modern take on Phil Spector’s ‘Wall Of Sound’, with the band’s dense layers. And is it just me or is it funny a couple guys from Tucson named their band for a city in California? Remember, The Colorado Sound presents Calexico at the Boulder Theater on Tuesday, June 12.

Margot – Superchunk, What A Time To Be Alive Superchunk have just released their 11th studio album in 30 years together. What A Time To be Alive was an unplanned record but a necessary one for them to make.

The album is a blistering take on the world as Superchunk sees it. (It was written in a comparatively short period of time, in the last couple months of 2016 into first two months of 2017.) Protest albums are coming back in favor and Superchunk’s latest fits in with the best protest albums of the rock era. What A Time To Be Alive is a blistering, rocking, take on life as we know it today and can leave you breathless with its frank sarcasm. If you are used to the pensive reflection of most Superchunk albums, be ready for the stream of consciousness opinion that makes up What A Time To be Alive. It’s sharp, it’s angry, it’s hopeful, it’s unapologetic, and it’s a terrific listen. Recommended tracks: “What A Time To Be Alive”, “Erasure”, “Lost My Brain” Stacy – The Wood Brothers, One Drop Of Truth In this face-paced digital era of everything now, sometimes taking your time makes a difference, and the Wood Brothers have done just that. For the new album, One Drop of Truth, they worked at their own speed, self-producing and recording over the course of 2017. During that time, they enlisted four different engineers to ensure an eclectic, but cohesive piece of work that stands as one of their very best. From the reflective “Strange as it Seems,” with Oliver’s gravely vocals over a stripped down acoustic guitar and string section to the jubilant, tongue in cheek ode to being happy, “Happiness Jones,” One Drop of Truth stands as a lovely family snapshot of a band only getting better with age. And although the band now calls Nashville home, the Boulder raised Wood Brothers still sound very much like an earthy, Colorado grown band.

Benji - Chris Smither, Call Me Lucky Chris Smither is one of those artists that has been hanging around the music scene so long he is often taken for granted. You may not recognize his name, but you definitely know his music. Smither has been Bonnie Raitt’s guitar player for years and someone she lovingly refers to as: “her Eric Clapton”. It’s been nearly fifty years since Smither released his first recording and since that time he has continued to develop his craft both as a guitar player and a songwriter. His new album “Call Me Lucky” is an ambitious two CD collection of originals and covers. The interpretation of Chuck Berry’s “Maybellene” is worth the price alone. Smither serves up a haunting version that makes you double check the credits to make sure Berry really wrote it. On the original “The Blame’s On Me”, Smither displays his self-deprecating style and whimsical word play. The entire album drips with tight performances and clever interpretations. If you’re just discovering Chris Smither, lucky for you he has saved his best for last.

Slow Caves evoke a depth of maturity that belies their youthful, blonde, surf-rock appearance. Their freshly squeezed 7-Inch release Poser / Rover stays the chilled-out course for the Denver/Ft. Collins quartet’s consistent brand of loveable, lilting slack-rock.

Poser / Rover sets cruise control smack-dab between Morrissey and Ric Ocasek era Weezer, with both tunes coasting in at a steady 135 bpm. It’s just enough drive to let your hair blow in the breeze – like a Mac Demarco tape was in the deck as you drove down Colfax to Poser / Rover’s release show a few Fridays ago.

Glossy production awash in tasteful reverb, Beach Boys “oohs” and frequent whammy bar dips are expected road signs for Slow Caves, but a favoritism for minor 6th chords breaks up the four-on-the-floor rock acting as indications of “curves ahead.”

“Your acid wash is so classic posh . . . I’m a poser - yeah that’s me,” side one says. It’s an homage to band-mates Jakob Mueller and Jackson Lamperes’ early

days on the Ft. Collins skateboard scene; a realm where ridicule forced them to “carve out their own identities” according to Mueller.

Maybe Slow Caves are posers – with a facade of California cool luring us towards their effortless vibe, when in fact, repeated listens reveal the articulated details of a band with very particular intentions. Mueller’s baritone croon gives us that sense of depth behind the beach-rock party feels too, while Rover’s obscure reference to a Simpsons episode about Jimi Hendrix’ posthumous, wandering dog, shows there is depth behind the rock – however goofy.

Whatever the mystery behind the appeal, Slow Caves deliver the goods and the fun on Poser / Rover. Their head-nodding rock satisfies those of us already craving spring/summer guitar jams. It proves they’ve got a long, sunny highway ahead of them, and we can’t wait to hear where they’re taking us next. Skate or die, dog!

From their humble beginnings in Sydney, Australia to the consistently sold out shows around the world, the name of the game has been stay on the grind and cash those checks when you can. Who is this Alex Cameron and his mysterious business partner Roy Molloy you ask? They are a hard look at pop music, and the future of the genre at the same time. Alex Cameron’s music pokes fun at the male ego while encapsulating it in a hypnotising performance. After releasing his second full length album Forced Witness in 2017 (which features an impressive list of guests such as Angel Olsen and Brandon Flowers of The Killers), every step they take is another step forward for their careers. We caught up with Al’s business partner Roy Mozlloy and chatted about all the things that make them tick.

BW: As long-time friends, clearly you and Alex have seen a lot over the years.

At what point did you decide you wanted to be his business partner instead of just a band member or his manager?

MOLLOY: Me an Al Cam been in business together to some degree since we were about 16. Workin together, little grifts, projects. The official business partnership was a natural progression I guess. Jumping the Shark was a beautiful album in my opinion, but at the time we really had to work to get it in front of people. To get its hooks in. We saw it affecting people at shows but the industry was largely deaf to it. We realised that it wasn’t gonna get heard unless the two of us tipped all our funds and expertise into it an took it on the road. We realised early on it’d be a long game, high risk kind of situaish’, an we figured we aught to make

the business side of it official in case we had to liquidate the whole thing and walk away.

So we started Cameron, Molloy and Associates. Then we went to work.

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve experienced in the last year, particularly with the release of Forced Witness?

Al said once that 2017 was the pill an 2018’s the come up. That made sense to me. We’re playin bigger clubs and the crowds are more jacked up. We’ve got the money to employ a full band and really get the music cookin on stage. There’s rarely any question that we’ll sell out a show or have any trouble getting booked, so that anxiety’s gone. Other than that we’re still doin the hard graft like we used to. Playin shows every night and driving to the next town. Tryin to keep the work rate up.

When was the last time you were starstruck?

I don’t get easily starstruck. I encountered Kirsten Dunst about a year back. That really got me. I guess I was twelve when Bring It On came out, and she was this impossibly beautiful leading lady. I remember I had a vivid dream at the time that she’d crawled into bed with me, warm and sweet, and whispered in my ear that she loved me, just me, all along, and of course it had always been me she’d loved. And then I woke up just hollow and sick with longing. Like a door with a draught under it. I got over it, I was only very young, but man it fucked me up when I saw her in person. A real ache in my heart. She’s very beautiful and charming in person and I was 100% starstruck.

Russell Crowe reached out on Twitter to say he liked the music. In a million years I wouldn’t have seen that coming. What a strange morning.

What’s the best meal you’ve had on tour so far?

Every now and then we catch a really fancy meal off the label or Sony or someone. I aint a cheap date an I normally get the seafood if it’s someone else’s shout. That bein said it tends to be the home cooked meals that really get me. Our friend Matt in Melbourne had us around for lunch the other day for roast chicken. Our guy Samoyed cooked us an asian breaky in his flat in Scotland with his girlfriend that I still think about. There was a french venue that had the promoter’s mum out in the kitchen knockin up pasta and salad. A home cooked meal in a loving environment can easily bring me to the brink of tears. Happy, grateful tears. Man. What a world.

What advice would you give for maintaining physical and mental health on a long tour?

If you weren’t living the dream as a professional musician, what would be your ideal job?

Eat vegetables, stay hydrated and keep ya arsehole an dick or vagina clean. If you’re mentally collapsing you’re gonna wanna lay off the booze, an don’t be afraid to talk to your mates. I made that mistake before.
