THEY CALL ME HERO Self-Titled

They Call Me Hero sounds a straight-up rock band, with a scratchy/screaming-but-melodious lead singer. While that’s a frankly generic description, the band and its output is far from generic. Through their excellent composition and songwriting, They Call Me Hero is a joy to listen to. Formed in 2012, this Denverbased band consists of lead singer and guitarist C.J. Welch, guitarist Toshi Jamang, bassist Sean Cunningham, and drummer Dan Salisbury. Interestingly, among

their favorite artists are Mike Ring and The Connection and Leash of Foxes, two Greeley-area bands, the former of which Welch and Salisbury were a part of. This is a Greeley band from Denver, effectively. It sounds like home. The beginning of “The Rescue” reminiscent of the White Stripes’ “We Are Going to be Friends,” before shifting into a calmer, slower song than “Steady Hands” and “The Dirty Ones.” “This is Goodbye (Hallelujah)” closes out the sixtrack album, and it is… indescribable. It’s a great song, that’s all you need to know. The only bit of their work that gives me pause is a sudden screaming section in the middle of first track, “Steady Hands.” It comes from out of nowhere; it’s almost like it doesn’t belong. But it’s short-lived, so don’t hold it against them too much. Overall, you need to track down They Call Me Hero’s album. It’s really good. As far as synth bands go, the three-piece Jimkata from Ithaca, New York is not here to fit in any EDM or electro indie pop box so many modern bands find themselves in. While there are some elements of these sounds throughout their music, their work, particularly on their latest album In Motion stands out from the norm. “I think that this album is another improvement in our songwriting, I think the songs feel more concise than previous records. It’s a good combination of experimenting and pop songwriting. The main difference is just us growing up and maturing as songwriters,” says frontman Evan Friedell.

Mature is exactly what their music is. While there is plenty of synthesizer to give it that ‘80s pop quality, these are rock songs. Friedell’s lyrics are conversational and heartfelt, avoiding the cliches that come with bands that sound like lasers are firing at regular intervals during their songwriting sessions. Citing hip-hop and the Daft Punk era of electro as major influences, the synth heavy elements of their music sounds very natural for Jimkata. “We always had a desire to make a sound that was much bigger than ourselves. Starting out just playing guitars it wasn’t entirely fulfilling enough, we had to go another step–make it bigger,” says Friedell. Currently on tour supporting In Motion, which includes several stops in Colorado, Jimkata finds themselves at their best. With years of touring and recording experience under their belt the band is hitting a stride. “All in all there is a lot of energy, and it’s a lot of fun. People are coming out and knowing the songs and that hasn’t always been the case,” says Friedell. Moving forward Friedell states that their goal their album is to reach people on a human level. They want In Motion to not be boxed in any particular genre and to speak for itself.

Rapper Bishop Nehru is not a bishop and his last name isn’t Nehru—it’s Scott—but the New York native is making some of the most authentic hip-hop out there. In an industry dominated by the fictional musings of mainstream rappers like Migos and Lil’ Wayne, the 19-year-old rap prodigy is a breath of fresh air. Coupled with the fact

he’s already accomplished more in his teens than most artists twice his age, he’s poised to be one of 2016’s brightest stars. With an MF Doom collaborative album, Nehruvian Doom, under his belt, production from DJ Premier and a brief record deal with Nas’ Mass Appeal Records, he’s on the fast track to a fruitful career. Fresh off the “World Domination Tour” with Joey Bada$$ and Denzel Curry, Nehru is preparing to release his latest mixtape, aptly titled MAGIC:19, with much of the production done by Nehru himself. Album highlights include the bass heavy ode to apathy, “It’s Whateva (produced by Tay Slay)” and the braggadocio “He The Man,” which both perfectly balance intellectualized lyrics with more mainstream beats, something he’s strived for all along. “At one point, I started to listen to more lyrical rap and I noticed the difference,” Nehru explains. “It’s a

whole different feeling. One is just for partying, and one is more of a serious vibe for listening and actually learning something. With that, it was just like that’s what I wanted to make. I wanted to have the balance of both. I like being known as a person who can rap instead of just a party rapper.” The 11-track album slightly slips on “I Know (Angel In My Dreams),” offering a noticeably sloppier beat than any of the other tracks. The Nehru-produced “Highs and Lows”

illustrates how he uses his music as a form of catharsis. “I know that sometimes it’s cold/but you just gotta roll through the highs and lows,” he sings on the hook—a slight glimpse into the resilient person he is. Throughout the album, he paints himself as both a teenager who just wants to have fun and also a vivacious student of hip-hop, one who clearly wants to showcase his best. So far, he’s off to a prodigious start. MAGIC:19 drops June 3.

However, the guys in Kongos have somehow successfully managed to do it. I bet they could even make Crocs cool, too. Nah, that’s pushing it… A follow up to the album Lunatic, which introduced “Come With Me Now” and “I’m Only Joking” to radio in 2012, we’re calling the band’s new single, “Take It From Me,” a killer next move for Kongos and their accordion. ATLAS GENIUS – Stockholm Much like Kongos, Atlas Genius is another band who met the radio waves a few years back, and since then, we’ve been anxiously awaiting what’s next. It’s here, and it’s called “Stockholm.” We’re really diggin’ hard on this song at The X, but we’ll probably never get to hear it live in Fort Collins because, you know, #BreadGate2015. Way to go, Fort Collins.

Thankfully, their tunes aren’t covered in chocolate, so we don’t feel guilty about how much we’ve been binging on them. CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN – Soundcheck Since we’ve started spinning Catfish and the Bottlemen’s “Soundcheck,” it’s become highly requested by our listeners, and I understand why. For fans of The Kooks, the Arctic Monkeys, The Vaccines or really anything made by brooding British post-punk revivalists, this band will be just your cuppa afternoon tea.

Colorado Sound KUNC’S NEW MUSIC-ONLY

In late February, NPR affiliate KUNC (91.5 FM) went to an all news format, seemingly leaving music fans on the Front Range in the wind. However, it came to light in March that KUNC had launched a new music-only station on 105.5 FM, dubbed, “The Colorado Sound.” KUNC President & CEO Neil Best said this has been in the works for two years, starting with discussions with Front Range Sports, the previous owners of the 105.5 signal. KUNC Music Director Benji McPhail said he was brought into the discussion in July 2014; he’s now the Programming Director for The Colorado Sound. “We realized that KUNC listeners wanted a choice when it came to what they were listening to,” McPhail said. “Both news and music had passionate listeners and there were a lot of listeners who liked both. So, it seemed pretty

simple, create two radio stations, one for news and one for music, so that whatever mood you were in we had a radio station that met your needs.” Among the staff of 105.5 are Margot Chobanian and Ron Bostwick. Bostwick hosts the Morning Show, while Chobanian is the host of “Bring to a Boil and Cover,” an afternoon show where she plays both an original song and one of its cover songs and tell the origins of both. Chobanian said the community reaction to the Colorado Sound has been great. “Everything has been positive--from the job, to the move, to the reaction to our station. The reaction has been especially gratifying,” she said. “For this guy who went to college for radio,” Bostwick said, “...who grew up listening to and loving music… and going to many, many shows, working at The Colorado Sound

is a dream come true. I get to play music that I haven’t heard in a long time. And I get to discover new bands and songs that would normally slip under my radar. C’mon, deep cuts from Bowie, Marshall Crenshaw, The Rockets… It’s great! It’s been wonderful to hear from so, so, so many listeners who say the same thing… ‘I haven’t changed the dial since I turned you on!’” NPR staple “World Café” is one of the programs that has moved to 105.5, playing from 10 p.m. to midnight, Monday through Friday. Their weekly program lineup includes “Guilty Pleasure” at 7:30 a.m., “Bring to a Boil and Cover” at 2 p.m., “Time Warp” at 6 p.m., and “80s Vault” at 8 p.m.. McPhail curates for “80s Vault.” Best said that both stations are “still evolving” in regards to their new formats. “A critical part of the future will be to be engaged

with the community,” Best said. “An example of what I am talking about are our quarterly music meetings, where the public is invited to attend and share thoughts about the direction of our music selections. Our next music meeting will be on May 18th at the Artery in Fort Collins. Our long-term goal is much more direct interaction with the audience, and specifically with the music community in northern Colorado.” For more information on The Colorado Sound, visit http://coloradosound.org. Interestingly, in our correspondence with Chobanian and McPhail, BandWagon asked if there were any plans for new shows, interviews or live broadcasts at events, and both said there were plans, but were mum on the details. “We don’t want to let all of our secrets out,” McPhail said.

INTO THE WILDERNESS By Kyle Eustice | BandWagon Magazine Over the course of the last 17 years, Explosions in the Sky have perfected its self-described “cathartic mini-symphonies.” The Austin-based group— guitarists Munaf Rayani, Mark BandWagon Magazine: Not many bands are doing what you’re doing. What made you decide to be an all instrumental band?

Smith, bassist Michael James and drummer Chris Hrasky— create intricate, guitar driven ballads full of wonder. All four members are equally as vital and each experimental instrumental

they create is as elaborate as the one before. The group’s latest album, The Wilderness, is out now, prompting the band to head out on a (mostly) sold-out international tour, which hits

You live in Austin, which is a pretty big music mecca. Here are two bands that are really able to make evocative music and rock music essentially without vocals. We were pretty intrigued by that. Also, we kind of liked the idea that there wasn’t sort of the main guy that was dictating the direction of the songs, band or music. This seemed to be a way to make it more of a full collaboration between the four of us. It’s worked out really well. It’s been frustrating, but also ultimately made us want to do it.

It’s pretty natural for us. With the stuff on the new record, it’s been a little more of a weird transition just because there’s a lot more going on-more layers, samples and all sorts of crazy stuff so we had to figure out how to pull that off live. All the other records are sort of just us setting up in a room and playing and it being record. They are more traditional studio records.

We treat Austin almost like every other city on a tour. We play there about once a year. It’s a town that’s very supportive of music and musicians. There’s a lot going on but there so much different

I think that had a lot to do with the music supervisor of the movie. He really liked our stuff. He had a lot of clout at the time because he had just done the music for Lost in Translation and that blew up so he could kind of use that to talk to the executives. Like he could be that hip, cool guy and it worked.

What can fans expect from a live show? We just try to put as much as we can into it. Nothing is worse than paying for a band that looks like they’re just cashing a check or bored. I hate that so much. It’s like, ‘You get to go play music for a job. Work a little harder, buddy [laughs].’ We play as hard as we can. The four of us try to get lost in the music and hopefully the audience gets engaged. This is what we do for a living and we realize how lucky we are. This is not a normal situation for most people. It’s a pretty great job to have.

Everyone finds comedy in life. For Patrick Richardson, comedy is found in the act of living–and the funny shit that comes with it. Already having a prominent presence in both hip-hop What drew you to comedy? I started doing comedy in January of 2014. I’ve always enjoyed being on stage, and I’ve always loved making people laugh. Stand up comedy was a perfect marriage of those two things. I haven’t looked back since.

How are you using comedy to impact your community? Comedy disarms people. Humor is biting; it’s the best way to deliver truth. The greatest kind of jokes don’t just draw a laugh, they bounce around in an audience’s mind, there’s a lingering aftertaste of truth. I have no delusions of where I am now. I’m far from getting to that place as a joke teller, but I’m striving to get there. Good stand up comedy promotes honesty. I’m trying to make my community a more transparent place through comedy.

No one in the room knew how to react to this strange old lady. I couldn’t stop laughing. It was such a real and bizarre moment.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you?

Life is so wacky. I can’t pick one moment. But I was driving home from Boulder with a couple of other comics about a month ago and I hit a cat with my car on the highway. It was horrifying. I was so bummed, but we couldn’t stop laughing at how ridiculous the situation was and how exaggerated the thud of the cat hitting my car sounded. It was traumatic. Least favorite kind of joke? I tune out any joke that’s racist or sexist. There’s no room for hate speech in the comedy scene I want to be a part of.

THE SOUND OF OLD

By Kyle Eustice | BandWagon Magazine It’s been three years since New York-bred emcee Aesop Rock (real name Ian Bavitz) has released a solo album, an excruciatingly long wait for those enthralled with his signature brand of independent hiphop. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t keeping us entertained with one of his many other projects—Hail Mary Mallon with Rob Sonic, The Uncluded with Kimya Dawson and Lice with Homeboy Sandman—but he had to wait until the timing was right to unleash another one into the world. That all changed April 29, when Bavitz released The Impossible Kid, his seventh solo album. “My solo records became a thing where I really wanted to handle as much of the work as I could, all production and all lyrics,” Bavitz explains. “I started having no real vocal features and no outside beats. I got help here and there, but in order for me to feel my vision was fully realized, I wanted it to be a true solo endeavor. The side effect of that is that it takes a long time.” Bavitz became more selective about what would and wouldn’t be an appropriate fit for his solo record, almost to the point where it was an all-consuming challenge, but a good challenge nonetheless. He had to find a way to remain active, but protect the integrity of his own work. “I still wanted to collaborate with

some friends, but didn’t always have a home for those collaborations on my solo work,” he says. “The idea of doing full albums and EPs with people came about. It felt way more real than just grabbing a random verse from someone and hoping it fit the concept right because now all parties were equally invested. It wasn’t my album or their album—it was ours. So things like Hail Mary Mallon, The Uncluded, and the Lice project came out of that; a desire to make these collaborative, and often more enjoyable projects while still chipping away at my solo stuff.” The end result is a 15-track sonic assault peppered with Bavtiz’s most tangible lyrics to date, a strange departure for the often enigmatic emcee. “It wasn’t really a conscious decision, “ he admits. “So much of what has happened over the years is that I’ll go make a bunch of songs, and not many people will hear them. I’ll just kinda do my thing, not really think too much about how it’s taking shape. I just try to let it just come out. Then I’ll finally play it for someone and they’ll say something like, ‘This is the most _____ music you’ve ever made.’ And it’s always surprising—not because it’s not true, more because I’m too close to it to even notice that kinda thing. I just kinda go and go and go, and then one day someone tells me what I did.

I really like it all—the super cryptic stuff, super straight-forward stuff; any of it can be fly to me if done well.” Lead single “Rings” came with a stunning visual that depicts Bavitz as a corpse, as he raps about the death of his art career. “I used to draw/hard to admit I used to draw,” he starts, a quick insight into who Bavitz once was at a certain period in his life before his music career blossomed into what it is today. “After college, I moved back to New York and was still making these large oil paintings in my tiny apartment, working full time and recording rap,” he says. “I started getting some positive feedback in and around New York for what I had been doing musically and it felt good. I think I just started focusing on that because it felt like I was making some headway. Art was something I always worked hard at from a young age, but ultimately I think I just didn’t really have what it takes to be successful at it. I loved it. I still love it, but music was emerging in my life in a way where I saw a clearer path between what I wanted to do and how I could get there. In a lot of ways, it came more naturally to me. The passion for both was always there, but the successes and positive reinforcement became more prevalent with my music, so it sorta won out.”

As The Impossible Kid begins to burrow its way into the ears of its listeners, Bavitz is already on the road like the warrior he is, carrying his weight for hip-hop culture. At almost 40-years-old, the new album is, in a way, a look back on everything he’s gone through up until now as he stares down his own mortality. “The Impossible Kid is me closing in on 40 and just going over it all,” he says. “It feels sorta reflective in the sense of going through some childhood memories, family stuff, friend stuff, music stuff, moments of being baffled by the youth of today, and just coping with getting older. I kinda feel like turning 40 is a very specific thing in our society. It somehow holds more weight than any other age, even though in some ways it’s pretty arbitrary. For whatever reason, it’s the age we are officially old. Maybe because if we’re lucky, it’s the halfway point. In your 30s, you can kinda still pretend to be young, but there’s not much pretending at 40. It’s the age that looms more than any other. So, for those not in-the-know, Doors lead Jim Morrison was only a vocalist. He didn’t play guitar. Sitchler, of course, acknowledged this. “It’s been a strange transition from playing guitar for 30 years, and completely putting it down and being a Jim Morrison impressionist,” he said. “After the first couple of shows, we realized the audience for this timeless music is there, and there just aren’t many Doors tributes in this market.” The band’s first show was a year ago at The Quixotes on St. Patrick’s Day. “It was supposed to be only once,” Sitchler said. “We’ve had incredible shows [and have] continued to grow through some good luck at The Quixotes, Bluebird, Cervantes, and most recently our biggest show which has had the most impact in Denver, Ophelia’s.” Most recently, the band has been performing the album L.A. Woman, arguably the bands most notable album, in its entirety which is what they plan to do at their upcoming show at the Moxi Theater in Downtown Greeley. In regards to his May 13th show at the Moxi, Sitchler said, “I’m looking forward to a surreal homecoming.”

“It started with a beard, and some sunglasses and a friend saying I looked like Jim Morrison.” Ivar Evan Sitchler is the Morrison doppelganger for Save Our City, a Denverbased Doors Tribute band coming to Greeley on May 13th. It’ll be a homecoming for Sitchler, who left Greeley in 1989. “My first real exposure to music back in the day was when my dad would put me on the handlebars of his bike and take me to the music library at UNC,” Sitchler said. “He would pick out rock and roll records I might like and sit me at a turntable with headphones.” His family had encouraged him to pursue music; Sitchler had played piano and tuba as a kid before getting a guitar at 15. He graduated from Colorado State University with a music degree in 1998. “After high school, the guitar has always been a part of my life,” He said. “I decided to get serious and go to music school. There, I had some serious sink-or-swim training in the classical guitar world. Tons of discipline goes in just to make it through a program like that. But my fellow students always inspired me and we all encouraged each other. They are usually practicing their their skills and are going through the grind that is music. Not every band is awesome at producing their intended sound while at the same time delivering instrumentally, but then every once in awhile there comes one that is. That band is Slow Caves. Composed of brothers Jakob and Oliver Mueller, along with their Photos By Bodie Hultin

childhood friends Dave Dugan and Jackson Lamperes, Slow Caves have built an indie grunge rock sound that is neither flashy nor mediocre, capturing the simplicity of the early Strokes albums while still carrying the energy audiences want from a live show. For the last couple of years, Slow Caves have been doing everything right. Between the raw talent of the band along with the smart management decisions from Dugan, Slow Caves have gigged all over the Front Range and built both an audience

and a strong and organic social media presence. And to top it all off, they make it look incredibly easy. Now, as they get ready to release their new EP, Desert Minded, and head into Colorado’s infamous festival season, which includes a headlining spot at Greeley’s May Play festival, this band is about to hit. Recorded with Corey Coffmen of the band Gleemer in his home studio, Desert Minded is their best work by far. Their previous EP was made before they had played

many shows and at the time they were headed down a slightly more electronic path. But after two years of constant gigging they found a different shoe that fit. “We just wanted to play really good rock songs that still had our original influences with the synths but now we’re doing more surfy stuff which is really fun. That’s probably influenced by the fact that we play these surf guitars and my obsession of the Beach Boys,” says Jakob. Desert Minded is four tracks

of indie rock fun. The vocal harmonies along with their guitar work shines, and Lamperes clinches the grooves with solid rock drumming. The title track “Desert Minded,” which is also featured in their sweet new music video, is a surf rock jam ready for a late night run on MTV2 if anyone still watches that channel. It has all the makings of a college radio hit and all it needs is the attention. One thing that should be said about Slow Caves is the role their families play in the band.

This isn’t your average show up to a couple of shows kind of support, instead it’s a deep rooted collective kind that involves the families from every band member. By being active, they cultivated an atmosphere where these four guys could make the best music possible. In fact when we spoke to Jakob on the phone he was actually screen printing shirts with his mother. We also spoke with Hans Mueller the father of Jakob and Oliver about the band and he

takes no credit for their success. “They started so young and they had their own ambitions. As a ‘recovering musician’ all I did was offer my help. I think what it came down to is they just made good decisions.” Slow Caves would not put a straight edge label on themselves but they did unintentionally become Northern Colorado’s wholesome poster boys of rock. “It’s not that we’re straight edge we just want to be the best versions of ourselves we can be,”

says Jakob. To dislike these guys you would have to invent a lie about them then believe that lie which would be impossible. The genuine nature of these dudes and their music is undeniable and it is only a matter of time before they move on to bigger and better things. Your best bet is to go to a show or listen to their new EP, Desert Minded, when it is released May 26th because it’s what you have been waiting for from a Colorado band.
