Senior Retreat CLASS (V

The retreat was sweet. A rip roaring weekend of raging rapids and righteous rituals.

It was the beginning of the end...

Junior Retreat CLASS 01 2017

The juniors this year at Camp Caribou learned how to whip, broke the record for the most bodies to go across the treacherous waters, and strengthened their bonds with one another.

Sophomore Retreat CLASS @I 2018 Sophomores started the day by receiving CPR training and certification. Next, they had a fun cookout lunch where they enjoyed time with their friends and played games on the field. Then they made their way over to the bowling alley where they played team matches.

Freshman Retreat CLASS 41 2019 The Freshman class spent their first day of high school picking vegetables at the Community Harvest Project. They then competed in the first annual Ice Cream Challenge, using vegetables to create some interesting flavors of ice cream. One flavor was beet-mint! Yum?

Mountain Day This year, dinosaurs ruled Wachusett Mountain. The cold weather did not stop us from having a blast. The songs,the step dances, the arts projects and the sports were better than ever!

Halloween Students paraded around the gym in their fabulous costumes matching their class themes. During the class competitions, apples were bobbed, pennies were tossed, races were raced, and WHOLE pies were eaten! The seniors won,juniors came in second,freshmen came in third, and the sophomores came in fourth.

ENGLISH & HISTORY Leading us through challenging novels and helping us write the perfect essay; Mrs. Fortier, Mr. Gal, Mrs. O'Rourke, Ms. Sheridan, Mr. Taylor, and Ms. Merritt helped us interpret novels more clearly. Guiding us through the past and sparking new interests; Mrs. Buckley, Mr. Sheldon, Ms. Bearse, and Mrs. Stevens taught us about the world's past.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE Beyond memorizing grammar and vocab, learning foreign languages gave us a window into different parts of the world. Senora Telenson, Senora Hosey, Profe David, Monsieur Collet, Madame Belanger, Magistra Silverman, Magistra Fuller, and Kong Laoshi helped us develop communication skills in French, Latin, Mandarin, and Spanish.

MATH We solved equations, calculated angle measures, and learned about the endless ways math is used outside of the classroom.

Ms. LeBlanc, Mr. Dickison, Ms. Kang, Mrs. Vanderspek, and Mr. DeSouza helped us take on the challenges of algebra, geometry, calculus, and more.

SCIENCE In science classes, we discovered how the material we learned in class applies to the real world by performing experiments and going on field trips. Dr. Beauregard, Mrs. DeMaria, Ms. Kang, Mr. Kondek, Mrs. Sheldon, Mrs. Pearson, and Mrs. Roche guided us through our scientific exploration.

The Cross Country team ran to new accomplishments this season. From killer workouts to brutal courses, the Cross Country team rose to the occasion. The toughest course the team raced had a mile uphill. Many of the team members broke their personal records over the course of the season.

This year, with the help of our new coach Melissa, we had the most successful season we've had in years. We won 6 games and lost 5, but more important than the score, we really came together as a team and a family. We supported each other through daily conditioning and skills work that improved our level of play exponentially.

This season, the Golf Team far surpassed expectations.

Outstanding contributions from underclassmen contributed to a high finish in the league. A 9-3 record was good enough for second place in the league, with our only losses coming from undefeated Portsmouth Abbey and fellow A-Bracket competitors Landmark. For the first time in several years, Bancroft beat perennial powerhouse Berwick Academy, taking both the home and away matches in commanding fashion.

There is nothing but positives to take away from this year, and it sets Bancroft up well to take a league title at some point in the near future.

The Crew Team had a great fall season. They were able to make a girls' varsity boat, a boys' varsity boat, and two novice boats. Members of the team rowed on different boats with different oar methods. At the Mass. State Championship,the boys'first quad came in first place. The novices learned how to pour their hearts and souls into rowing. The team grew and became closer through hard work, effort, cold fingers, and sore legs. The crew team always prevails; through thick and thin, they row on. You can always catch them on the vicious waves of Ouinsig.

With the leadership of Coach O'Brien, the Varsity Boys' Basketball team once again had a very successful season. They made it to the NEPSACS Finals and played their hearts out. The quad captains demonstrated leadership and spread spirit to every school they visited. Through long practices and challenging games, the boys bonded as a team and never gave up.

The Varsity Swim Team had a great season. Starting off the season with three members who had never swam before, both coaches were in for a challenge. However,the team not only developed their strokes but also improved their times as the season progressed. It certainly was a memorable season and captains Noah Keates and Christy Mangiacotti will be missed.

The Varsity Ski Team had a memorable season this winter filled with countless laughs, hugs, and Skittles. Every day the skiers loaded the bus and headed to Wachusett Mountain to have fun and shred gnar.

Asian Culture The Asian Culture Club holds intellectual conversations on Asian current events and common stereotypes in society. Students have the opportunity to learn more about Asian culture through its diverse history, traditions, food, and media.

Care CARE(Children's Arts and Recreational Experience)is a mentoring program for children ages 6 to 12 with moderate special needs. Bancroft students come to school on Saturdays during the fall and spring to spend time with these kids.

Decibelles Decibel/es is a long-standing all-female a cappella group. The young ladies involved in the club aspire to bring music to campus and perform at local - facilities. Environmental Environmental Club aims to help Bancroft become more green and to increase community awareness for the environment. The club's big project is held on Earth Day when they create a fun, educational, and engaging day for the Upper School.

The club inspires the Bancroft community to recycle and take action in their community regarding environmental issues.

GSA The Gender Sexuality Alliance, known as GSA, is committed to raising awareness of LGBTO issues and creating a safe, supportive space for students with questions about gender or sexual orientation.

Club members discuss issues pertaining to gay rights in a casual, comfortable environment. GSA sponsors events such as the National Day of Silence, a day on which students volunteer not to speak in order to raise awareness about the silencing effect of bullying on LGBTO youth.

Pi Club Members in Pi Club share the same passion for mathematics, which provides the foundation for this club. The club competes at numerous challenging math meets throughout the year. This year, the Pi Club won Districts as a team and are going to States next. When the club is not competing at math meets, they pursue math-related activities that range from solving math problems to watching math programs. The Pi Club regularly challenges the Bancroft community with The Problem of the Fortnight.

PLA The Peer Leader Association, known as PLA, works to create a community where no student fears any form of bullying. Via studentled workshops, PLA provides students with useful information and coping mechanisms concerning bullying. The club brings positive energy to the student body with Random Acts of Kindness. This year, the PLA planned and hosted a Mix It Up lunch.

a Powder & Wig Powder & Wig, the oldest club on campus, is devoted to promoting any and all types of performances in the community around us.

Powder & Wig provides the funding and advertising for all of the main stage productions and organizes a trip to New York City each year.

Prom The Prom Committee organizes the Junior and Senior Prom each year.

The committee works to cover the costs of the prom by planning the homecoming car wash and by working at the Community Dinner.

In addition, the Prom Committee sponsors other fundraisers.

Robotics Known as the Robodogs, the Robotics Team uses the VEX Robotics Design System to build, program, and drive innovative robots in interscholastic competitions. Mentors from Worcester Polytechnic Institute help guide the teams. This year, the Robodogs sent two teams to Worlds, hosted in Louisville, Kentucky.

Social Concerns Social Concerns is a club centered around fundraising for various nonprofit organizations. For example, the club raises money for the Worcester Partnership, which gives Elm Park students the opportunity to attend a free enrichment program at Bancroft.

Social Concerns also sponsors the annual Red Cross Blood Drive, Canned Food Drive, Churro Sale, and Pennies for Patients. The club aims to involve the Upper School in the greater Worcester community and beyond.

Speech The Speech Team competes at local and national interscholastic tournaments. Members compete in events consisting of public speaking, acting, and interpretive reading. The club's goal is to instill useful, life-long skills in its members. The Speech Team has been very successful in the past few years and have had a number of national finalists.

Unleashed This group of dedicated writers publish pieces for Unleashed, the online school newspaper. Unleashed is an electronic publication that features movie, book, and music reviews, recipes, original artwork, prose and poetry, surveys and PowerPoints. November 21-22, 2015 Returning for a second year at Bancroft, The Bancroft Young Writers' Conference was an exciting weekend for all who attended. Attending four workshops, each led by one of the six fabulous mentors, the students learned about different genres of writing, from Poetry to Non-fiction to Scientific Journalism. Students engaged directly with the mentors, while also having the opportunity to ask questions and even share their writing during the open mic.

Charlie A. Tournament The Boys' Varsity Basketball team competed in the annual Charlie A. tournament, named after Worcester Partnership founder and Bancroft superfan Charlie Aleksiewicz. The weekend kicked off with the annual Knockout Tournament.

After a heated battle, the Sophomores won the chance to compete against the Basketball team captains in the quad captain game. In the end, senior Mustafa "John" Eracar won the 2015 Knockout Tournament. Later that night, the Boys Varsity Basketball team won their game! ONE PACK.

For the second year in a row, French Immersion Day was a huge success! The students attended four workshops, all spoken in French. Ben Carson, a Maryland surgeon; Texas senator Ted Cruz; Ohio governor John Kasich; Florida senator Marco Rubio and New York businessman Donald Trump met in 13 debates and seven forums to make their ideas known. Ten other candidates had filed, but withdrew sometime before the first caucuses in Iowa and another seven left the race as primaries heated up. LESS CROWDED FIELD Maryland governor Martin O'Malley left the race ollowing the Iowa caucus in January d Democratic presidential contenders illary Clinton and Bernie Sanders 'took turns "winning" states early on.

EQUAL DIGNITY Just a month after the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that states cannot keep same-sex couples from marrying and must recognize their unions, the Boy Scouts of America lifted its ban on openly gay adults as scout leaders. AVIAN FLU A severe outbreak crippled the domestic egg and poultry industries, affecting nearly 50 million birds, creating shortages and causing record-high prices.

REACTION ACTION THE CONTENTIOUS DEBATE SURROUNDING SYRIAN REFUGEES AND THEIR ACCEPTANCE IN THE US CONTINUED, WITH 31 STATES REJECTING THE IDEA. In September,the Obama administration announced plans to increase the number of worldwide refugees accepted into the United States each year from 70,000 to 85,000 in 2016 and by another 15,000 in 2017. According to Secretary of State John Kerry, this step "is in keeping with the best tradition of America as a land of second chances and a beacon of hope." Other world leaders also announced aid for the estimated 4.5 million Syrians who have fled their homeland since the civil war there began in 2011; Canada, France and Germany revealed plans to resettle families who continue to flee Syria — where healthcare, education systems, and other infrastructure have been destroyed and the economy is shattered.

FAR AWAY "WHEN TRAGEDY STRUCK THAT EVENING, OUR HEARTS BROKE, TOO." -PRESIDENT OBAMA

November 13 was a devastating evening for the entire world as tragedy struck in Paris, France. A series of carefully orchestrated attacks took place in the City of Love and its Northern suburb, Saint-Denis. Suicide bombings and mass shootings in the streets, restaurants, a concert hall and the Stade de France ensued; a final count of 130 people were killed, and hundreds of others injured. French President Francois Hollande quickly declared a state of emergency and French government tightened border controls. The attacks subsequently heightened terror alerts worldwide, as militant group ISIS claimed responsibility, releasing propaganda videos threatening forthcoming attacks in other parts of the world. Thereafter the French military conducted a series of airstrikes on Syria. Nearly a week later, ringleader of the attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud was tracked down and killed in a dramatic raid. Support worldwide was extended and a stronger fight against ISIS was collectively at the forefront.

TWIN SUICIDE BOMBINGS The deadliest attack on Turkish soil killed more than 90 individuals during a peace march in the capital of Ankara, nearly three weeks before national elections. The two bombs detonated seconds apart and were thought to target a rally of pro-Kurdish activists.

ISIS didn't claim responsibility but did remain a prime suspect. GREECE BAILOUT The country, whose debt crisis began in 2010, received their third bailout in five years. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras resigned, called for new elections following the 86 billion euro bailout and, again, was sworn in as Greece's leader on September 21. PACIFIC TRADE DEAL The Trans-Pacific Partnership involved 12 countries and aimed to strengthen economic ties, lessen tariffs, encourage growth and potentially create a single market like that of the EU.

POPE FRANCIS' HISTORIC VISIT The Argentine-born Pope journeyed to the United States for the first time in September. His stay lasted six days as he extended his love for the less fortunate and manifested his concern for helping the nation with their most pressing political, economic and social challenges. He even visited New York where a religious service was hosted at Ground Zero. TRIO OF HEROES Three American men, Airman First Class Spencer Stone, Oregon National Guard Specialist Alek Skarlatos and college senior Anthony Sadler, aboard a train from Amsterdam to Paris, rushed and stopped a man who boarded with an AK-47 and a handgun. Two,including Stone, were shot but no one was killed, and a potential massacre was prevented thanks to the men's heroic acts. PRINCESS CHARLOTTE Kate Middleton and Prince William welcomed their second child and first daughter, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana on May 2, 2016. Charlotte automatically became fourth in line to the British throne behind Prince Charles, William and George of Cambridge.

GERMAN AIRBUS CRASH Germanwings A320 crashed into the French Alps in March killing all 150 passengers onboard. The investigation was ongoing, but it was clear that Captain Patrick Sonderheimer left the cockpit for unknown reasons and co-pilot Andreas Lubitz did not respond to his knocks on the cockpit door as he tried to return; the plane's tragic and drastic descent began simultaneously. HAJJ STAMPEDE More than 2,100 people were trampled and killed in Saudi Arabia near a holy site during the hajj, an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, after two enormous waves of Muslim pilgrims collided. The 5-day religious journey is required of all Muslims at least once in their lifetime, and drew nearly 2 million pilgrims from more than 180 countries in 2015. METROJET FLIGHT 9268 Militant group ISIS released a statement claiming responsibility for the Russian plane that crashed over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on October 31, killing 224 passengers on board. ISIS later published a photo in their online magazine Dabiq of the supposed bomb that caused the crash: a soda can pictured with two simple additional components that would have been the detonator and a switch.

QUEEN ELIZABETH II In September, Her Majesty became the longest-reigning monarch in 1,000 years of British history, surpassing her great, great grandmother Queen Victoria.

Amidst all of Mother Nature's mood swings — floods, fires and earthquakes — she and the world of science made sure to leave their mark on the year. When scientists announced there was flowing water on Mars, it gave rise to a question that has long been considered: Does life exist beyond Earth? The watery flow was confirmed by dark streaks that patterned the surface during Martian spring and summer months. Whether or not life could be supported was impossible to determine, and would depend on how briny the water was and how cold the conditions were. Regardless, the discovery reopened doors for NASA researchers to further investigate potential life on Mars.

HURRICANE PATRICIA In October, a Categoiy 5 hurricane near Mexico's Pacific coast was the strongest ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere, with maximum wind speeds of 215 mph. SOUTH CAROLINA FLOODS The state dealt with more than two feet of rain in October, resulting in thousands of power outages, 17 deaths, several failed dams and an estimated $1 billion in damages. EL NII-s-10 The second of two back-to-back warmest years recorded was due to an unusually strong El Nino in the Pacific Ocean and ongoing global warming. CALIFORNIA BLAZES In September, more than 1,000 homes were destroyed from two massive and relentless wildfires in Northern California. POWERFUL BLOWS FROM NATURE Earthquakes shook areas of Afghanistan/Pakistan in October, Nepal in late April and Chile in September. The 7.5 magnitude quake in Pakistan led to nearly 400 deaths when it originated more than 200 kilometers below Earth's surface. The 7.8 magnitude tremor devastated Nepal with more than 8,800 deaths and 3.5 million citizens in need of assistance. Chile's 8.3 magnitude quake was nearly five times stronger than Nepal's, but caused an estimated 10 deaths, one million evacuations,tsunami alerts and hundreds of aftershocks.

NEW HUMAN LINEAGE Homo naledi, a previously unidentified species of human lineage, was found in the Rising Star Cave in South Africa in September and was part of one of the largest samples of hominin species ever found.

PEACE PRIZE The prestigious award in medicine went to three: William Campbell and Satoshi Omura for their efforts against ringworm and Youyou Tu,for her research in creating a drug that would effectively tackle malaria. #EMPTYTHETANKS With an existing badly damaged reputation, SeaWorld announced that it would end its theatrical orca shows in San Diego by the end of 2016. To make matters worse, an 18-year-old orca died of a fungal infection at the San Antonio location in December.

CECIL THE LION A beloved male lion living in the Hwange Game Reserve in Zimbabwe was shot and killed for sport by Walter Palmer, an American dentist and big game hunter.

The big cat was lured out of the sanctuary when killed, and worldwide protests followed.
