Whether it be from tardy slips, transcript forms, or a simple "Hello!" in the morning, she has a way of brightening even the gloomiest days of the exhausted student blues. Coming to the end of senior year, we all recognize and appreciate her "behind the scenes" work. Student Life at Bancroft offers students time to play, work together, and create art, song, and school spirit. Back-toschool retreats, Mountain Day, Homecoming, and Halloween are times when the Upper School commu.n0 unites to produce wonderful memories. Class competitions are a part of the comaraderie, with seniors often leading the way. Go Bulldogs!

were disappointed to find their country club retreat canceled. Despite overcast and rainy weather, the seniors made the best of the day. With the help of Mrs. Carlson, they set up games including, floor hockey, volleyball, and Outburst in the gyms. Following the activities, the famished seniors ate a pizza lunch in the Multi-Purpose Room. They then set off for an exciting and competitive afternoon of bowling.

STUDENT LIFE

Freshman and sophomore retreats are always a fun way to start off the school year. For the freshmen it's a time to meet all the new students, while the sophomores use this time to catch up with classmates. The freshmen spent their day playing games and swimming at Camp Blanchard. In the past years the sophomores did some form of community service Top: Michelle Remillard, Gabe Drapos,Sam McLennan, and Issac Camp hang out on the raft at Camp blanchard. Reaching New Heights Juniors at Caribou The juniors headed off to Camp Caribou in Maine for a few days of bonding before the start of the stressful junior year. Since they were half way through high school, they used the time to reflect on past years and to look forward to the future. From singing "Beaver One, Beaver All" to riding the zip-line into the lake, juniors pushed their fears aside to try new activities. They created new friendships on the nature walks and around the campfire under the stars that lasted into school year.

Mountain Day was a huge success this year. The past couple years had been cursed with bad weather but fortunately the rain, clouds and wind did not show this time. Mountain Day provided an opportunity for students to take a break from classes and have some fun. Everyone participated in a number of activities and games in order to win points for their class. As usual the seniors dominated but the freshmen came in a surprising second this year. In the end, though, the students had a good time riding the chairlift, cheering on their classmates and just enjoying the beautiful day.

A Day and Night Full of Shining Stars Homecoming Celebrations Homecoming this year was awesome! School spirit was everywhere on Saturday, both on and off the athletic fields. Fans and athletes could be spotted wearing the Bancroft Homecoming 2004 "Tear It Up" T-shirts, which were sold by the prom committee. The celebration,which began on the playing fields, carried over into a great night of fun and dancing. Musical performances and the crowning of the homecoming court were memorable highlights of the night. As the dance drew to a close, tired boys and girls piled into cars under a sky full of stars.

A Spooktacular Event "We believe" in the Halloween Spirit As they file into the large blue gym, Covered in spooky gear from toe to brim, What will they expect? How much candy shall they collect? For Middle and Lower schoolers, the costumes did vary, Each high school grade found a theme, on the contrary. "Where is Waldo?" the freshmen inquire. Curious children look for the striped red and white attire. Sophomores boogied down in Holiday fashion, From Christmas to Easter, they showed their passion. Juniors acted the high school stereotype Jocks, Goths, punks, preps, nerds- was what the juniors looked like. But, the yummiest treat of the day Came in the form of green tights and a shadow wanting to play. The seniors amazed us with a delicious surprise, "Watch out for the Indians, pirates, especially Hook!" they advised, With that they ended the Halloween festivities, We'll just have to wait till next year's spooktacular activities!

Acting Ou Fall Drama: Tom Jones The dynamic farce "Tom Jones," was preformed by the largest cast in recent Bancroft History. Tom Jones, the foundling, played by the unrelentingly talented junior Baird Bream, is discovered and raised by Squire Alworthy (Ryan Erickson at his most pompous). Tom falls in love with Sophia (Sarah Neslusan) and follows her to London to confess his true love. All the while the affable and somewhat absent-minded partridge (Matt Stepanski) tries to keep the whole show together. During the course of the play, Tom dodges death and lusting women of fashion while tracking down his long lost love. Filled with unexpected twists and farcical humor in convincing British accents, Tom Jones was a Bancroft production to be remembered by all. Matt Stepanski

Winter Musical: Guys and Dolls The classic musical "Guys and Dolls" has become a tradition of Bancroft Theater, making an appearance every ten years. The lead, Scott Do'mat-Connell is the suave gambler Sky Masterson, who falls head-over-heels in love with Sarah Brown, a missionary played by Julie Vairo. This comedic and romantic story also revolves around the slightly poorer and more slipshod Nathan Detroit, played by Matt Stepanski. While searching for a place to shoot crap in his hometown, New York City, he tries to

maintain his relationship with Adelaide, played by Wilma Cespedes, the lead performer at the Hot Box Night Club. Other important roles were played by Matt Glick, Ryan Erickson, Dan Neslusan, Scott Lindblad, and Tim Harrington. The songs were performed with enthusiasm and backed by the supportive pit band. The set was breath taking, especially the Hot Box nightclub, which was complete with a set of blinking lights. The production was an experience that the cast and crew will never forget! Since the beginning of the year the freshman class has been one big family! There were many new freshmen mixed with returning Bancroft students, but this added more character to the freshmen class. The Pit, the lair of the freshmen, was full of excitement this year. Whether they were listening to music or "working" hard, they always managed to make new Irta John and Isabel Zinman working hard in memories in the Pit. And upperclassthe library. It's not all fun and games for the men - watch out - because the class of 2008 is pretty amazing!!! freshmen.

Mathematics The mathematics at Bancroft School vary from Algebra to Geometry, and Pre-Calculus to the "AP's." All of these courses cover the concepts of differentiation and integration as applied to situations in business, biology,sociology,economics,and psychology. The math department's goal is to teach children everyday concepts that will be necessary in a future everyday lifestyle, as well as difficult work involving much thinking and individual learning. The students strive to learn the intellectual concepts of mathematics, and the teachers are always available for extra help. Mathematics at Bancroft is intellectually demanding and opens minds to the ideas of math.

Science Science at Bancroft School is both challenging and invigorating. The passion behind the science department is the labratory work. This prepares the student for future scientific and technological work. The hands-on work results in active participation in the learning process and improvement in conceptual understanding. From Lower School learning and IPS lab in Middle School, to physics, biology, chemistry and the "APs" in Upper School, the science department continues its excellence in teaching and active participation. The students at Bancroft receive technological insight and lab training to better their knowledge in the sciences.

English The English Department at Bancroft creates an inclusive learning environment helping students develop comprehension and articulate language skills while maintaining the fundamentals of spelling and punctuation. Beginning in the Lower School, students learn the rudiments of writing and maintain creative writing journals. Middle Schoolers explore the more difficult concepts of sentence structure and learn to utilize a five paragraph essay. By Upper School, students delve into novels and literary works that touch upon diversity, American History, and the Bible, concluding with a construction of a Senior thesis on the topic of their choice. History History at Bancroft intensifies in Middle School when students explore the foundations of government and develop geography skills. A unit on Worcester-based United States history is also included in the curriculum. In High School, students discover Western society until World War II, and develop an understanding of the economic and political developments that change a country. Exploring the roots of our country, United States History analyzes American social, economic, and political traditions beginning with the Founding Fathers.

Language Bancroft's devotion to a strong language department is evident. As young as first grade, students begin to learn French through games, plays and songs. Then when they reach Middle School they are given the choice between continuing with French or switching to Spanish or Latin. In sixth grade all students take part in the Roman Banquet where they display Roman life-styles, food and culture. In Upper School students begin to study their languages in greater depth and this year students partook in both Spanish and French exchange programs over March break. Art, Gym, Music Lower and Middle School students take classes in gym, music and art. Throughout the year they are given opportunities to showcase their musical talents in assemblies and concerts. Their art is displayed around the school, and students are also able to show their creativity during many class projects. The gym department exposes younger students to new sports and teaches older students how to take responsibility for their fitness level. This year the Upper School gym classes participated in a Survivor Challenge and Period 7 received t-shirts for earning first place!

From Student Council and Activities Board, to G.S.A. and Peer One, students are able to engage in numerous activities and clubs that app01 to their interests. All organizations are student run. They provide students an opportunity to take a break from the academic world and take part in an activity that they enjoy.

Student Governmen Student Council Led by Student Council President, Sarah Allen, this year's student council was one of the most successful ever. The "Get Out of Gym" proposal, for seniors who play a sport outside of school, was finally passed along with the founding of the Bancroft Automotive Skills School. Mr. Pollock was as enthusiastic as ever, with comments such as "Dick Cheney is hot" and the infamous "Beat Pingree!" Overall, good times were rolling in student council 2004-2005. Disciplinary Committee The 2004-2005 DC was focused and just, with Dave Gerhardt leading the way. Not many cases were brought before the DC this year, presumably representative of a well-disciplined student body. The committee continued to correct the ways of the small number of misguided Bancroft students, and overall, had a successful year.

Activities Board Activities Board worked hard all year long to provide the student body with exciting class competitions and awesome social functions. Sam Pope adeptly ran the show as a first time member of AB. From homecoming to lipsync, all the members of AB contributed immensely to an overall successful year for the Activities Board.

Singing Some Notes Blue Belles With a solo by Lisa Tankanow and the leadership of Noelle Crooks, the Blue Belles began their year with a beautiful version of "Under The Bridge" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This singing group, consisting of all girls, showed the beauty of voice and song in the Bancroft community. The Blue Belles laughed and sang into the ears of the Bancroft audience. For the acapella concert as well as spring concert they sang "For the Longest Time" by Billy Joel. Their melodious voices are tranquil and always calming.

Uncommon Time Uncommon Time had a fabulous year, with a record high of sixteen members! They kicked off the year with "The Star Spangled Banner" at the opening of Homecoming Day, and then prepared "The Reason" for the Winter Concert. The Nursing Home World Tour gave them an opportunity to perform for an audience outside of the Bancroft community. They performed at the double header of the College Acapella night and the Spring Concert with ease. They practiced hard for Graduation and said farewell to their five seniors, to whom they wish the best of luck!

Powder and Wig Powder and Wig worked as hard as ever this year, and produced some outstanding shows. The fall drama, Tom Jones, was a huge hit as well as the 8th grade

play, Oliver Twist. From Open Mic Night to the musical to the 5th grade play, Powder and Wig continued to provide top-notch entertainment for the Bancroft community.

"Three, Two, One....Action!!" Social Concerns From toy drives to clothing drives to food drives, the Social Concerns club had a busy but successful year. Led by seniors Rachel Stevens and Christian Seale, social concerns was able to organize more communitybased events than ever before. Lizzy Eze and Morenike Fajana, backed by the rest of the club, provided endless assistance to Rachel and Christian, leading the club through a successful year!

Strengthening the Community Peer One Sam Bacon, Connor Dow, and Dan Greenberg lead Bancroft's Peer One's discussions on social issues in the Bancroft community and society as a whole. The club displayed opin-

ion boards in the hallways to hear the voices of the entire commmunity. The opinions of everyone on topics from dress code to the election gave new perspectives.

ADL Peer Trainers The Anti-Defamation League's Peer Training program works to combat all forms of prejudice and bigotry by fostering dialogue in an open environment. Lead by Morenike Fajana and Matt Glick, we gained new members who were trained over a three-day period earlier in the school year. In March, the Peer Trainers facilitated two ninety-minute workshops for both the 9th and 11th grade. Morenike Fajana

GSA GSA leaders, Sarah Allen and Ryan Erickson, led the club in discussions on community and national GLBT issues of acceptance. This years fund-raising included the GSA café and the GSA movie night. The money supported Safe Homes in Worcester, an organization dedicated to supporting gay and lesbian teens.

"Mix it up" day, sponcered by ADL PeerTrainers, successfully encouraged students to sit at new lunch tables for a day and make new friends.

Amnesty Amnesty International, under the leadership of Adrienne Marois and Stephanie Connors,raised awareness about human rights issues around the world. They addressed important issues of women with HIV by sponsoring a candlelight assembly and letter writing campaign. The club also sold Happy Meals at lunch and doughnuts at homecoming to raise money to support the international organization.

Canteen Canteen has had a year of excitement and suspense. As usual they have faithfully and dutifully been selling snacks and drinks to the Upper School via the Student Commons and have donated all of their funds to the Worcester Food Bank. They have had a dilemma this year; many of their most trusted customers are being ripped away and are spending their money at the new vending machine in the gyms. With loyal leadership from Angela, Brad, Greg, and Sam they hope to regain their monopoly and continue to raise money next year.

Estrafalario had an amazing year packed with a plethora of events to experience some of the local Spanish culture. They dined at the famous Tortilla Sam's, swapped gifts at a Christmas party, watched "Dirty Dancing" in an organized movie night, and much more. The club will be sad to see their senior heads Wilma Cespedes and Christian Seale leave next year, but are looking forward to continued success led by Justine Popik and Monique Goring.

A Smorgasbord of Cultures Greek Club For Greek Club,2004-2005 has been an eclectic year. Their amazing heads, Stephanie Ganias and Angela Giannopoulos, organized activities such as preparing Greek salad, watching "Helen of Troy," learning how to Greek Dance, doing fun arts and crafts projects such as making worry beads, and playing Greek card games. This club is open to students of all backgrounds and gives the Bancroft community a glimpse of Greek culture.

Over in Madame Puccio's room, French Club has been busy, constantly planning and being involved in French events. They have planned a week-long bake sale for French Week, made Mardi Gras masks,attended a play at Assumption College, and watched "Hotel Rwanda" at the local theatre. There is no end to their constant fun. Led by Laura Honig and Hannah Holdstein, this club hopes to continue to be the Paris of Bancroft.

Beacon Newspaper This year the Bancroft Beacon published a variety of articles, from political issues on the 2004 election to a school visit from CNN Crossfire's Tucker Carlson. Current pop culture, movies, music, and sports were also regular Beacon features.

Intarsia What wonders are held here, you ask? It is beyond comparison. There are colors among this group of people that have not been seen in a lit firework. You can't help but marvel at those creations; they are wonderful things. They've made people stand up and lean over the backs of others to get a closer look, but we'll hold them up higher if they're hard to see. Tridents and pencils and color markers(some of them scented!) held aloft, we're a proud bunch. But we're really in full support of love and creativity. We've got plenty here in this club, and you can find it with ease, like a brown glove that was dropped in the snow. We rejoice in all creative expression, and we love you. Debate Team Is Wal-Mart good for America? Should teachers be able to express their opinions during class at private schools? Overall is the internet harmful or helpful? These are some of the few issues Debate Club has been preparing to argue within and outside of school. While trying to emphasize the rules of formal debate, we find ways to have fun as we promote thoughtful argument. By playing games, brainstorming, and holding practice debates, our C-Day meetings are used to help build up speaking and argumentative skills. In the company of our patient and understanding chaperones, Ms. Jersild and Mr. Legget, our club astounded the Yale Model Congress, lifting its participants in storms of moving rhetoric. On this four-day foray, the Bancroft statesmen (and women)engaged in rigorous debate about national affairs and passed legislation in an effort to make our nation better. We came away from the experience with the immense respect of our peers and a number of interesting stories.., for instance: the day the girls got lost and wandered into a not-so-wonderful part of New Haven. As only one of our senators will retire, the club can expect continued participation over the coming years. If only the United States were put in the hands of such devoted public servants!

Brain Power Speech Team

We, the extremely proud and energetic members of the Bancroft Speech Team, now carry many black binders and have put them to good use making a name for ourselves within the realm of forensics. We have flourished under the love and support of our coaches, Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon, and Spanky, the Flying Hamster of Doom, who rains coconuts on your pitiful city and who strikes fear (or at least perplexity) into the hearts of our opposition. He has been a critical part of forging the speech team's identity, for he represents the might and splendor that we speechies(one who does speech) carry within ourselves. The speech team continues to educate itself in the ways of speech while bonding together and winning a multitude of trophies and some nifty nutcrackers. We look forward to future victories and the possibility that, if any speechie makes it to nationals, Vanessa shaves Baird's head. Math Team With captains Ben Lund and John Dahlberg, the math team made it to four meets in 2004. They showed off their skills, and their hard work advanced them to Division A this year. We've Got Game Ping Pong The Ping Pong club was very successful this year, led by Tom Bacon, John Dahlberg and Monica Picard. Many students and teachers participated in the open tournaments, which became very competitive. These members were so enthusiastic about the thrills of ping pong that many of them could be seen in the mat room during their free time, honing their skills. Caleb Dresser and Dan Reilly along with the rest of the Fly Fishing club could often be seen polishing their casting skils on the sports fields during club meetings. Their skills were put to good use during club trips to local rivers. Mr. Smith was a very helpful guide in combination with the experience of the club leaders, Caleb and Dan.

From scaring little kids at Sturbridge Village on Halloween to clearing paths at Jellystone Park, the Outing Club did it all. And even though they had few meetings, the club explored what Massachusetts had to offer. The heads, Andrea Haas, Siobhan Finicane, and Katrina Engelsted, helped lead the way to an eventful year of the outdoors.

The team came in second in the EIL and advanced to the semi-final round in NEPSACS. By training in Florida, they got an early start and were in shape to take on any team. They hope to have another fine season in 2005.

Crossing the Crease Lacrosse 2004 The Women's Varsity Lacrosse team had a fun season, some highlights included: Annelise having her first shutout, Julie scoring her first goals, Sarah's intense nose bleeds, Becky's debut in goal, having at least one team member getting yellowcarded at every game, and the gorgeous wire saftey goggles. Emily became an EIL allstar, leading the team offensively. The captains, Jen,Julie and Jess, headed the team with confidence and will be missed for the 2005 season. Hitting it Home! Baseball and Softball 2004 The Softball Team,captained by Abby Reid and Allison Wallace, carried themselves through a season full of shut outs and big wins. Coaches Ms. Gerhardt and Mr. Marois were impressed as the girls won the first two rounds in the ELL tournament. They gave it their all in the finals but were at last defeated by Pingree. With Cynthia Javaras and Adrienne Marois named EIL All Stars the softball team finished the 2004 season on a strong note. The Baseball Team came in second in the league with Connor Ryan as captain and league MVP. The team, led by the mound work of Sam Pope and Dave Gerhardt, was able to play 38 consecutive innnings without conceding a single run. Competing for Gold Track & Field 2004 The track team started out with a large number of willing participants. Whether they were running or throwing, every athlete put in their best effort and contributed to the team. This year they strengthened their skills as well as set new school records. After a successful season last year, the cross country team wondered whether they could match that record. The team came out strong this year with captains Scott Dolmat-Connell and Ingrid Guha leading the group. After a year of injury, Christian Seale came back this season to contribute to the team, while Mohamed Adams, Lia Engelsted, and Tasi Kuluyba tried cross country for the first time. Alden Ruml, Ben Lund,and captain, Katrina Engelsted unfortunately got injured and had to cheer from the sidelines. Times were shortened and PRs were broken. This year cross country started with a bang and ended in a boom. Kickin' It, Soccer Style Soccer 2004 Both girls and boys soccer played a tough season. The girls' team put forth their best effort, and while their scores may not show it, they dominated every game. Captains Sarah Allen and Andrea Haas with Coach Kelley and Coach Manchester helped the team to enjoy the season. Similarily, the boys Varsity dominated and defeating past rivals, including Pingree and L.C.A. On the Varsity team, Cynthia Javaras gets Coach Spreadbury and captains ready for a free kick. Tim Harrington, Sam Bacon and Her fierce expression is enough to scare off Sam Brown turned up the heat on the other team. the field. The team finished the regular season as tri-champions of the E.I.L. Unfortunately, the postseason came to an abrupt end with a devastating N.E.P.S.A.C. quarterfinal loss to the Foreman School. Shooting to Victory Field Hockey 2004 'Twas the start of pre season, when all through the field, The squad was running, with quite a high yield. The players were working with lungs out of air, In hopes that they would soon have some wins to declare. Then Pingree arrived with ponytails askew, The battle of the season... onto the field we flew. Into overtime we assaulted their cage Pounded Emma,fought on with an offensive barrage, When, to our wondering eyes the clock stooped, Fate gave us a tie and mouths they just dropped. But with senior Lisa so lively and quick, The three, three, three one soon did the trick. More often than team dinners the wins they came, Coach whistled, and shouted, and we laughed out their name, "Now, Beaver, now LCA, now Portsmouth and BB and N! Bring it on Concord, on LCA, on Rivers and Newton! To the top of the league! To the top of it all! With the Telegram, darn Telegram still ignoring our call! But with October cold and rustling fall leaves Lawrence and Winsor, they harassed us like thieves. If only those two bad apples could battle it out A call to the cops would be in order we don't doubt. Coach Q- you keep us alive with your defensive skill Coach G- the best in the world we commit our will. Even Patty R and her Notre Dame vultures, Will never be able to match our great field hockey culture. The Ski team was very enthusiastic and could often be spotted in the hallways on race days wearing their colorful spandex GS suits to show their team spirit. Led by senior captains Connor Dow, Dana Fuhrmann and Emily Baird, the team was a dominant force at Wachusett Mountain. The team had six races, was very successful on the slopes of Mt. The JV Volleyball team had an incredible season with experienced players Betsy Gardener, Julia Karpicz, and Brianna Perley as captains. For such an amazing team it was difficult to find competition, but they managed and were able to show their opponents how real volleyball was played. These girls were tough on the court and had a great time playing, especially with their striped socks. Their team motto? Slap the Tissery!

How do you say goodbye to an all-star team characterized not only by the best records but also the best teammates and coaches? Impossible feat but we shall try.

Varsity Volleyball had a spirited team of fifteen players and two great coaches who immediately blended over fun times in spandex. Accompanied by episodes of the OC and remembering to bring our manager Erion to every away game, we won the title of EIL Champions and NEPSAC Champions! Regardless of sweaty hands, yellow cards, step aerobics, attempted jump serves, and deceptive Moo games, we triumphed over our biggest competition: Milton. And most importantly, Kate called the ball "in" correctly ... twice. We've had so much fun these past four years playing volleyball with amazing teammates.
