They say high school is tough. I think it's fun. It's where we make lifelong friends. Where we meet our first loves. It's a whole little world of its own. A place where we learn not only about equations and formulas, but about the bigger picture. About life and the world we live in. And the people who live in it. In high school, we're exposed to all kinds of people. All kinds of races and backgrounds. We recognize what makes each — of us different. "hello." Energetic, kind and helpful are only a fraction of the words The Class of 2000 uses to describe her. Mrs. Rodrique works hard to make sure that our school day runs smoothly. She not only keeps track of attendance, makes an infinite number of photocopies and organizes the overflow of college applications, but she offers us advice and guidance. One may ask, "Where does she find the time to do all of this?" Unfortunately, there is no answer; she simply does it all. Thank you, Mrs. Rodrique, for everything you do for us. Thank you for the wonderful conversations when we, the stressed-out seniors, were sitting in the College Center addressing college applications. Thank you for replenishing our energy with handfuls of Tootsie Rolls. Thank you for all the smiles and encouragement. We owe you our eternal gratitude. Bancroft has been a wonderful second home for me for several years. I can't thank my teachers and classmates enough for allowing me to be a performer, an athlete, a student and a teacher, a leader and much more. The adults here have not only been my teachers and advisors, but my friends. All of our class has brought out the best in me by challenging me and sharing with me good times and laughter. All of you have made me the person I am and the person I will be. Much love, luck, and laughter to the class of 2000.

It has been mostly fun during the past 4 years of high school. Although I would be lying if I said it went by quick. I would just like to thank my parents for all the money they paid to put me through Bancroft, and for making sure I always did my best. I've spent 10 years under Bancroft's instruction. However, as I see it, I have been my own best teacher. As does any individual, I evolved, and Bancroft offered me a hospitable environment in which to do so. I can only breathe a sigh of relief that I arrived at my current state. Passing through such memorable stages as the kid who was picked last for football at recess, the class clown who was sent to chat with the principal frequently, the completely self-conscious loner begging for acceptance, and the depressed pseudo-romantic - all of which led up to my current state. I don't know where I'm headed next, but happy that at least it's in the right direction. The best thanks I can give is to say that anyone who has taken the time to participate in my life in any form is now a part of me, whether I consciously realize it or not. You have become integrated into that which defines me, and its products. Specifically I owe a great deal to my family, and everything they have done for me. Also, my good friends, who have selflessly offered themselves for my improvement, I am indebted to you. The theater, which has done so much for me, I owe a great deal. Beginning in 9th grade acting, I have realized that allowing myself to be exposed has only positive repercussions. So I humbly bow in the zen nature with the utmost respect to Mr. McLinden, Mrs. Hench, and Mr. Belanger. Also, to WTF, where one can emerge from a summer of torture a better person. I now know how capable I am.

At first I was not going to steal someone's quote, but while passing by the very un-missed Quinsigamond Elementary School, I remembered my first grade teacher that my parents came to know as Ms. Carpenter. INTERNATIONAL TIES

Studying this year at Bancroft has been a great experience for me. I had the opportunity to live with two different families, the Wrights and the Finns, which was an enjoyable experience in both cases. I really appreciate what these two families did for me. Making new friends was not a big deal at all, as everybody was very nice to me since the first day at preseason. I also want to thank all my teachers for all the help they gave me. Class The first day of school begins the waiting period for one of the most anticipated days of the year. After a few fake-outs and an unexpected cancellation, Mountain Day finally arrived, and the entire Upper School body gathered atop a windy Wachusett Mountain. Mountain Day marks the beginning of the annual series of class competitions between all four classes. With Mr. Enlow at the helm, the 'Race Across Space' began the four-way fight to gain the lead after the first day's festivities. Other Mountain Day activities included Lord of the Rings, the dance-a-thon, volleyball and the drama presentations. The class competitions continued throughout the year. At Halloween, classes competed in pumpkin carving, apple bobbing and pie eating in hopes of gaining the lead. This year, the Seniors made a 'Haunted Maze'in the gym for the Lower Schoolers to enjoy, as the rest of the Upper School dressed up in costumes of their choice. Before Winter Break, both holiday decorating and the wreath toss increased holiday cheer. Ice sculpting, snow football, volleyball and sledding kicked off the Winter Carnival. Ultimate Frisbee, kickball, the egg toss and tug-of-war concluded the year's competitions. Class competitions spark enthusiasm in each class and encourage both unity and teamwork among the classes as they battle for victory and for the honor of having their name engraved on the plaque outside of Ms. Martin's office.

Bancroft enjoyed another year of successful dances. From the more casual Friday dances all the way up to the formal, Prom, almost every student looks forward to the dances. Although the Powder & Wig sponsored "Starstruck" Dance had to be held inside because of inclement weather, the dance still served as an excellent start to the new school year. Other less attended Friday dances included the "Pajama Techno" Dance. Upper Schoolers also enjoyed putting on their semi-formal attire.

Homecoming, which ended a day of exciting sports, continued to be a much anticipated event. The Yearbook Staff worked hard to organize the other semi-formal of the year, Mardi Gras, which returned to its former location at Club Maxine's. The year will end with Prom, held this year at Harrington Farm in Princeton. Though many claim that they don't like to dance, a little part of everyone enjoys getting on the dance floor, especially with such exciting events. —Manasi Chitre

The school year doesn't really start at Bancroft each fall until the Club Fair in September, that one hour of hawking and selecting among many of the Upper School's sanctioned delights. Once everyone signs up for some ten-odd clubs and the meetings and events begin, the aeons of free time that seem to exist in our schedules curiously disappear. What, with chances for personal enrichment ranging from Social Concerns and C.A.R.E. to the famous and popular Ping Pong Club to the mindless and hedonistic pleasures of Student Council, student organizations cater to many different interests. And so 11:45 was a good time this year, perhaps the happiest time of day for the peculiar students of the school who seek out time commitments as an excuse for social interaction.., oh no, I have to go, I'm late for the Fly Fishing meeting, and Mr. Smith is teaching us how to tie knots. — Achyut Phadke

We combined legislation in the form of proposals as well as recommendations to improve life in our school. Significant change occurred through dialogue with the Administration. We spent significant time discussing the best academic paradigm, while Council synergy produced a new student government modality for the next several years. Issues such as dress code and lunch line cutting are over; now Council works on matters of greater importance. How can we improve the testing schedule for students? How can we better represent student interests to groups such as the Faculty and Trustees? Eight dedicated representatives, one President, one Activities Board associate, and four teachers steered Council towards the Land of Results. Council passed the Outdoor Commencement Proposal and spent the winter addressing the Honor Roll question, testing policy and other topics. The spring will bring the usual excitement. Freshman superstar rookies Vasiliauskas and Yood impressed us all with their tenacity; the sophomores Tumolo and McDonough stood as paragons of reliability; juniors Turner and Tingue showed the maturity of experienced students, and Sbrogna and Kaufman brought with them the wisdom of seniors. Council meetings involved debate, humor, planning, and the Conservative Corner. I would like to thank former Presidents Anastasia, Crowley and Ahalt for giving me the opportunity to lead Council in an era of great student freedom and respect for initiative. We have made the Upper School a better place. As a group we would like to thank the Belt of Kurt, which inspired us at every meeting. -Winthrop Ruml

They have supplied the extracurricular framework for the school activities and have done an adequate job of bringing the funk to the Upper School. A brief recap of the Activities Board events tells a story of commendable effort, with the best yet to come. While the first dance could not be held outdoors due to inclement weather, it still satisfied with the strange construction worker/DJ and the keen rhythm of the student body. Likewise, Homecoming succeeded with typical flair, and this year the blue gym was not littered with helium balloons. The pajama jam, while lacking in numbers, did not want for techno or flannel. In similar fashion, the orally fixated class competitions have strangely affected the student body. Especially productive was the senior class's Halloween Maze. Built instead of the old Haunted House, the cardboard outfit was roundly enjoyed by the Lower School and praised by the Lower School Faculty. As such, the Activities Board has clearly not shied away from the competency of years past. Yet, the funk that we promised to unleash on the Upper School has come only in very small installments. That soon will change, and as you look upon these clean pressed pages. fond (or not so fond) memories should soon crop up in those furry heads. What fun! -Achyut Phadke

Amnesty brings to the Bancroft community opportunities to fight agains worldwide human rights violations. Without Amnesty, students might not be as likely to realize that even though they are only individuals, they can still help to make a difference. Bancroft Hosts The Host Club has had a great year this year. With over twenty-five active members from the freshman and sophomore classes, and the school's application numbers increasing annually, we had a lot of responsibility on our hands, but were still able to do a great job. Thank you to everyone who joined the club, hosted a prospective student for the day, or made a visitor feel welcome in some way. The Beacon's goal was to capture the events and voices of all members of the school and to create a vehicle of expression and communication open to all. With this new vision, The Beacon embarked on a mission to expand the role of the newspaper. Increased student participation led to an expanded monthly paper covering a wider range of issues and views. The Blue Moon Staff had a great year assembling the yearbook. The staff spent many afternoons in the Tech Center working hard to make the 2000 yearbook the best yet. The Club sincerely appreciates the tremendous dedication of the advisors, Mrs. Dings and Mrs. Wilson, who spent all of their free time helping us accomplish our goal. The Business Staff did a wonderful job raising funds to support the yearbook, with coupon book sales and the annual Mardi Gras dance. The Photo Staff developed pictures diligently to supplement the text and to fill the yearbook with candids. Buddy Program The Buddy Program is an organization designed to ease the transition for students new to the Upper School. Incoming students are paired with "Big Buddies," who volunteer to act as mentors, helping their partners feel comfortable in their new environment. Contact is made over the summer so the buddies can begin school with someone to turn to with questions, or with whom they can just have a conversation. The buddy relationships continue over the course of the year, and the pairs take part in various exciting activities, such as the candy hunt and an ice cream party. CANTEEN CLUB This year, the Canteen started in debt from last year's expenses. Within the last quarter, we were out of debt, and quickly making money. This Thanksgiving, we donated turkeys to poor families, and at Christmas, we donated money to a charity organization. CARE. C.A.R.E (Children's Art and Recreation Experience) is a community service program that involves Upper School students working with special needs children in art and gym activities. This year, we had two very successful fall and spring sessions. Our two instructors, Dave Sweet, gym, and Erica Driscoll, art, made the program a wonderful experience for all. The Upper School students, -Big Buddies." showed great enthusiasm and worked well with their very energetic "Little Buddies." This year Julie, Stefi and Mr. Enlow sat on the Wellness Advisory Committee where they discussed, with other Bancroft faculty, students and parents, how to provide a safe and supportive environment for students of all ages in the Bancroft community. _z_)-T11 Debate has had a good year. Through our successful activities, the members of the Debate Club have acquired the skills necessary to excel in debating. Under the impassioned leadership of Talya and Derek, the Debate Club has set out to instruct its promising coterie of members in the fine art of rhetoric. Despite a sluggish start to the year because of managerial problems, we have successfully imparted our knowledge and zest for debate to our young disciples.

Disciplinary Committee

It proposed a student representative body that would integrate Upper Schoolers into the disciplinary process of their peers - a process that at the time involved solely administrators and faculty. After writing a constitution for the Disciplinary Committee, the Student Council presented a proposal last year to the Upper School students, who voted this board into existence for the 1999-2000 school year. Now the DC is composed of eight members: a representative elected from each grade, two faculty representatives elected by the faculty, a President elected by the student body and the Student Council President. The DC can be called for relatively minor to serious disciplinary infractions, but no matter what the circumstances, all members bring with them a sense of fairness and compassion. We talk with the student concerned to best understand his or her perspective and situation. The President runs the subsequent discussion about consequences a specific case merits. This year, your representatives have contributed thoughtfully and articulately in meetings, as I'm sure DC reps will in years to come. When a majority of the six voting members (the reps from each class and the two faculty reps) have agreed on a specific consequence, the President brings the DC's decision to Mr. Pollock and Ms. Martin. Thus the Head of Upper School and the Dean of Students can incorporate the students' voice in their disciplinary decisions. - Meg Swan

With new leadership, the revitalized Fly Fishing Club attracted many more eager young fishermen and fisherwomen than ever before. Gay-Straight Alliance This year marked the beginning of the official Gay-Straight Alliance at Bancroft. Most people don't know it, but the group has actually been in existence for almost three years. Starting in 1997, a certain group of individuals desired to start the club and the administration refused us the permission to meet. Thus, we began meeting unofficially, having discussions and even attending the annual G.L.S.E.N.(Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network) Conference in Boston. But finally, after much perseverance, we were permitted to become a "real" club. Our goal is to take an active role in educating ourselves and the community about GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered) issues in hopes that some day, Bancroft School can be a truly safe and tolerant place for all students. -Ingrid Tsang and Laurent Martin

Horizon Horizon thanks you for your wonderful support and concern. Recalling our successful sessions, we find ourselves in gleeful gambol. In fact, Horizon is the galloon garnishing our misty Bancroft memories. So often those with special needs, especially in adolescence, are considered Somebody Else's Problem. We deeply appreciate your emotional, extensional and temporal involvement in our little social theatre group (oft marked by hierophanies). This program means so much to the buddies; watching them grow has been fulfilling beyond credulity. We will certainly miss this surfeit of enrapturing satisfaction when we serendipitously slip away to college. Thank you, and thank you some more. JUNTOS Juntos is a club dedicated to celebrating diversity. We recognize that we live in a society full of different types of people. Juntos has drawn its attention to that which makes us different and that which makes us alike. We have had several discussions ranging from hate crimes to diversity. Juntos also helped Mr. Sherry to educate the seventh grade class on Flash Judgements. This program proved to be very successful and beneficial to both the seventh graders and to Juntos members. Under the impeccable guidance of a jovial Mr. Barrow, the team has increased enrollment and spirit. Club meetings have become more purposeful and involved for the members. The Math Club has continued to offer a staple of national math exams and to participate in the Worcester County Math League competitions. Outing and Science Bancroft's Outing and Science Club has focused on improving awareness of the Bancroft community with regard to environmental issues. Also this year, B.O.S.C. members constructed a solar powered car and raised the wind turbine, donated by the class of 1999. Although the year's trips started with the cancellation of the Mt. Moosilauke trip, the club rebounded with a skiing trip to Okemo and a visit to Mt. Moosilauke in the spring. Spring events included the blood drive and Earth Day celebration. Per One Peer One had a successful second year. The club focused on educating the student body about important issues that teenagers face today, such as stress and drug abuse. Using different art media, such as skits, presentations and speakers, the club planned different activities to inform Bancroft students of these issues. 1r)..5r The second year of the Ping Pong club has come! The year started off quicker than the inaugural year due to our having the tables and other equipment already. Practicing went underway as soon as the tables were fixed and set up. The doubles tournament in the beginning of the year added a twist to the normal one-on-one style of Table Tennis. Many planned events such as watching a professional tournament and the annual singles tournament to close up the year should take place. C& -3 This year's Prom will be held at Harrington Farm in Princeton on April 29, 2000. The Prom Committee has conducted many different fund raisers, such as a candy apple sale, a bake sale and the Battle of the Bands with the cafe, which was a huge success. The Committee met every week to discuss the Prom and make it a memorable one for the year 2000. With multitudes of students signing up from every grade, the club was in for a promising year. The second annual StarStruck dance and cafe kicked off the club events with enormous success despite the cold weather, and featured astounding visual effects courtesy of the theatrical department. Open Mic Nite drew in one of the largest audiences ever to see Bancroft students showcase their talents. The first theatrical production of the year, the eighth grade play, The Tolstoy Story, ran four brilliant shows in November. In December, the hilarious Upper School comedy, Confusions, took place and was an entertaining and delightful show. After the holiday vacation many students auditioned for the musical, Oklahoma!, held in March. The Bancroft audience will be given a chance to see future stars of the stage in this year's fifth grade play. Hopefully the tremendously popular annual Powder and Wig events, such as the spring trip to New York to see a Broadway show and Movieness, will be loads of fun. P&W rocks. Social Concerns Members of the Social Concerns Club help many individuals and organizations in need. Our projects have included the adoption of a child from South America, the March of Dimes Walk, the Heifer Project, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and others. During the fall, the club gathered food for the Worcester County Food Bank. For the holiday season, we collected Toys for Teens and volunteered our time distributing gifts. All of our members are special people for all of the work that they do. Table de Francais The French Table this year already has had a successful crepe sale. The money from this will be used when going to a French restaurant. We've also organized a cheesetasting ceremony. Tour Guides Bancroft Tour Guides did an excellent job this year representing their school. The year opened with several training sessions and a pizza lunch. By October twenty-fourth, the Tour Guides were well-prepared for Bancroft's Annual Open House. The day went smoothly because of the hard work and sacrifice of the Tour Guides. Visitors to Bancroft continued to enjoy their visits throughout the year. Thank you to Mr. Gielow and Mrs. Lamir for all of your help and hard work. Model Congress After intensive preparation at the hands of Mrs. Rasnick and Mr. Gondek, the Model Congress group headed off to New Haven with competency assured. The debate at the Yale November Conference ranged from furious to inane, yet, at the end, the awards won by the four legislators of the apocalypse, we saw Claire Danes and Richard Belzar. This year, the Bancroft Boys' Soccer Team had some difficulties putting games in the "win" column. The other E.I.L. teams were strong and proved too daunting to overcome.The team lost the leadership of many of last year's seniors, but captains Derek Sbrogna, Marc Schultz, and Brandon Rockwell stepped up to fill their shoes. The team finished with a total of two wins, against Pingree and Landmark. The 1999 Bancroft Girls' Soccer team finished off another remarkable season. The Lady Bulldogs showed an impressive record of 18-0-2 and were crowned E.I.L. Champs for the fourth year in a row. Along with placing first in the E.I.L. Invitational Tournament, the girls also captured their second NEPSAC championship in four years, a great accomplishment for the school and the team. Erica Woda was named Player of the Year, with teammates Chrissy Goss, Ingrid Tsang, Libby Brennan, Julie Nicholson, Priscilla Swan, Margaret Bacon and Kara Manchester also earning spots on the league All-Star team. This year Chrissy Goss reached a record 100 goals during her four years at Bancroft. The team would like to thank Coaches Martin and Gondek for a fabulous season and to congratulate them on a flawless inaugural season as head and assistant coaches. A powerful defense frustrated every attempt on goal in league games. The highlight of the season was the team's unbelievable show of field hockey in a 7 v. 7 double overtime situation in the NEPSAC semifinals, winning the game 1-0 with an outstanding goal by Elle Cahill. The Bancroft team had seven All-Stars, including Stephanie Dolmat-Connell as Player of the Year, Elle Cahill, lzzy Crowley, Kelly McKallagat, Christine Holder, Erica Marois, and goalie Liza Michie. COUNTRY GIRLS: This season the girls won the league championship for the fourth consecutive year. The team consistently dominated each opponent (going undefeated in league competition), putting up a dual meet type score of 28, a whole 36 points better than the second place Pingree. The team had four of the league's eight All-Stars, including Sam Welch, Stephanie Galica, Caitlin McDonough, and Mary Perrin. On their overnight trip to Bath, Maine to compete in the New England DIII Championship,the girls splashed through mud and puddles to pull out a surprising third place team finish, led by Caitlin McDonough's twelfth place finish. The girls had a great year full of pasta dinners and Dr. Pepper chapstick, not only winning, but also becoming close as a team. May the traditions live on. —Sam Welch and Emily Athy

BOYS:The 1999 Boys'Cross Country Team continued and established key traditions, maintained high levels of performance, and had incredible fun on a daily basis. Starting in late August, promising rookies complemented valuable returning players. The starting line position emerged after vying for spots in the pack, including sophomore phenom Josh Lubatkin, consistently strong Nate Senge, pace-setting Win Ruml, depth-providing Matt Rosales, goofy Zack Lewis, hard working Jon Ursprung, freshman sensation Andy Galica, and acting headmaster Nate Saperia. A second pack provided consistency and support. The team started optimistically and focused. Bancroft suffered a tough loss to Pingree, but posted a victory against these rivals two weeks later on Pingree's home turf. Bancroft entered the league meet tied for second, and with Matt Rosales' stunning performance as the #6 runner, Bancroft finished the season in sole possession of second place. Captains Ruml and Senge both made the league All-Star team. Highlights included the 100% mission success of Operation Desert Coyote, gallons of Dr. Pepper, and consulting with the Holiday Inn on successful marketing techniques. —Win Ruml and Nate Senge

The Bancroft Golf Team of 1999 had a successful and enjoyable season. The team finished the season strong with a record of 4-2 and came in second overall in the league behind Berwick Academy. The team consisted of two seniors, Captain Lindsay Gerhardt and Milan Moore; three juniors, Charlie Tingue, o Karmue and Andrew Haddad; and the only freshman, Chris Finn. Both Chris Finn and Q Karmue won the MVP awards of the team as they showed their skills in the Eastern Independent League tournament and each earned spots on the All-Star Team by finishing in the top five in the tournament. The team had a great season, and next year's is sure to be even more of a success. -Lindsay Gerhardt

This year's team was relatively inexperienced compared with teams of the past, but the Men's Basketball team did better than they had expected in the season. The team was led by the prolific Mike Surabian. Surabian passed the 1000 point mark this season as a senior, which was a great accomplishment. The other returning players, Matt Rosales, Josh Lubatkin and Larry Atupem served as a good supporting cast. Newcomers Tom Mack and Joe Brennan were solid and played a crucial role in the team's chemistry. The team was in contention for a league title up until the last few games of the season, but unfortunately they lost out to LCA and later Chapel Hill, who took the title. Next year, the Bancroft Men's B-Ball team will continue to rebuild and be stronger than before. —Mike Surabian, Matt Rosales and Josh Lubatkin 106

This year's basketball season started out shaky, but as the team grew closer together and the fundamentals began to show through, the season ended on a high note. When the team walked onto the court for the start of the game, or even of warm-ups, the intensity and focus already seemed apparent. Our record may not show the team's ability, but spectators agree that the girls' performances were ones to talk about. Julie Deprez, at her last basketball game at Bancroft, helped to crush LCA with 27 rebounds and 19 points. Right behind her was Erica Marois with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Those are only two of the many talents of this year's 1999-2000 Girls' Varsity Basketball Team. We were proud to be the captains of such a tough team. The1999-2000 Girls'Varsity Volleyball team was very successful this year. The volleyball program has been at Bancroft for four years, and this year we are proud to be Co-Champions in the EIL with Concord Academy. The overall record of the team was 12-3, and the record in the league was an impressive 11-1. The team this year is finally like our cheer: "Together!" We had many 'firsts' this year: We beat Concord 2-1 with game scores of 15-6, 5-15, 15-9; we beat Lawrence Academy for the first time, with scores of 15-4 and 15-1. We also came out strong playing and winning one game against Stoneleigh-Burnham, the top team in the Western Independent League. With Mr. Stein as coach, senior captain Rachel Harper, senior Erica Woda,juniors Maya Litani and Libby Brennan, and sophomores Emily Dore, Dena Raffa, Uyen Le, Sin Bream and Nyna Vo, the team was strong, enthusiastic, and played some great volleyball. We made the EIL Tournament as the third seed, the highest seed yet. The seniors Rachel and Erica would like to thank Coaches Stein, Salit and Enlow for a great year. Team came out with a vengeance this season. The girls' team racked up points week after week, vying for the league title and eventually placing 2nd overall. The boys also had a fine showing, with John Finn and Nate Senge leading the times; the boys and girls together placed well enough to rank 3rd overall. Meg McLaughlin received an impressive 4th place racer overall, with Izzy Crowley close behind in 8th place. Spirit ran high week to week, and high scores indeed catapulted the team to victory. Starting with only two veterans and three novices, the team members had their work cut out for them. Their first few matches featured individual successes, but the team lost matches due to the lack of numbers.They later drove to a victory over Chapel Hill, the first E.I.L. win since the wrestling program began four years ago. The team fared well in the E.I.L. tournament, with several people beating their respective seeds. Another team highlight was the victory of a Bancroft student in the separate wrestling class for women established this year by the League. - Dave Yood

This year has been a time for reflection, not only for the students here at Bancroft, but for the Worcester community and the global community as well. We haue sadly said goodbye to many people. During the fall, members of the Worcester community, along with the hundreds of firefighters who came from all ouer the globe„ paid their respects to the six firefighters, Paul Brotherton, Timothy Jackson, Jeremiah Lucey, James Lyons III, Joseph McGuirk and Thomas Spencer, who courageously died in the fire near Route 290. flnother tragedy that happened during 1999 was the crash of the plane carrying John F. Kennedy, Jr., his wife and his wife's sister. The Peanuts gang, whom the nation enjoyed reading in the funnies, retired a week before their creator, Charles Schulz, passed away. On a happier note, all of the worrying people had done about the millennium was for nothing. "That's just so pippin!" is an old expression from the Midwest, specifically Oklahoma, which describes what has passed between Jesse and Bancroft. The expression has caused so much confusion in our town that we'd like to tell you what it means: special, outstanding, with flying colors. We could sing the praises of the reciprocal relationship between Jesse and Bancroft that can never be cast away, but perhaps it is best simply put by saying, "It's in the music, man." GOODBYE In 1987 we bright eyed kindergartners entered into our school career, welcomed by our energetic and understanding teachers, Mrs. Merzigian and Mrs. Truesdell. Our days consisted of snack time, recess, finger painting, recess and recess, with the occasional marriage of classmates. One thing we excelled at was cutting and gluing. Mrs. Paugh and Mrs. Holden were more demanding than our past teachers, but just as understanding. Reading and math were added to our curriculum, and recess was shrunk down to only fifty percent of our day. The tire swing claimed many nauseous victims that year, sending students to Mrs. Casey for a change to fresh clothes. We lost sleep for months, not from our worries, but rather from the exhausting anticipation of our field trips to the aquarium and Higgins Armory. We entered second grade with more painful anxiety: cursive writing. Many of us struggled with these letters, the capital letters resembling Egyptian hieroglyphics. Our class felt an injustice because our class theme was Worcester Architecture (not a very exciting topic for an eight year old). Most of the girls had secret crushes on Mr. Effinger and Mr. Lovejoy. while the guys had crushes on all the older eighth grade girls. Seventh grade started with Chewonki and was filled with dances that we looked forward to even months before. Eighth grade was a typical sequel to seventh grade, even cheesier, and an even cornier plot. The Bancroft Upper School students welcomed the freshman girls in our class with very open arms: however, the boys had a tougher time being accepted by the older crowd. High school was a time for us to become the mature, responsible young adults our parents have been waiting for ... they are still waiting. People stressed about grades. the SATs and college. Now, having graduated. we seniors are free from our high school stresses and accept our college stresses with open arms.
